Save More for Retirement with These 5 TIPS Even if you are juggling other financial goals, here are some steps from Merrill Lynch Wealth Management to help you get back on track.

Debra Greenberg, director of Personal Retirement Strategy and Solutions at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, has the following five suggestions, each of which can help you get closer to your retirement goals. “Don’t get discouraged,” Greenberg says. “Even seemingly small amounts can add up over the years, and taking action now increases the likelihood you’ll be better prepared to meet any unexpected challenges that come your way.”

1. MAX OUT YOUR TAX-ADVANTAGED ACCOUNTS.

A 401(k): Be sure you’re getting your full company match, if one is offered, so that you’re not leaving money on the table. Don’t forget: An annual “catch-up” contribution of $6,000 is allowed after age 50. Roth IRA or traditional IRA: No 401(k)? Or want to save more? Consider an IRA. If you’re married and not working, you could contribute $5,500 to a spousal IRA. Catch-up contributions of $1,000 are allowed after age 50. Health savings account: If you have a high-deductible health plan, an HSA can be used for qualified medical expenses now, and after age 65 you may be able to pay Medicare premiums with tax-free distributions.

2. PAY OFF COSTLY DEBT.

Paying off high-interest credit card debt should be a priority. Doing so will give you more money to direct toward your retirement. Says Greenberg, “A financial advisor can help you figure out how to manage competing financial needs while still saving for retirement.”

3. WORK LONGER.

If you work past age 65 — or consult as you phase into retirement — “that can potentially give your assets more time to grow before you start drawing upon them,” Greenberg notes. Working longer can also help you to defer your Social Security payments. Each year you delay taking Social Security after age 62, your monthly benefits grow by about 8%, until age 70.

4. DOWNSIZE.

By downsizing or moving somewhere less expensive, you could reap the benefits of: • The equity you might have accumulated in your home • Reduced living costs (like transportation, housing, maintenance bills) • A smaller mortgage—or if you can buy a new place outright, eliminating a mortgage completely • A tax advantage if you relocate to a town with lower property taxes — or to one of the seven states with no personal income tax

5. INVEST FOR GROWTH.

Many people tend to shift to more conservative investments as they near retirement; others simply have a conservative investing bias. But today’s longer life expectancies mean that your money has to work harder and last longer. “Talk to an advisor about adjusting your asset allocation to pursue more growth, without losing sight of your risk tolerance,” Greenberg says.

Happy Mother’s Day

I

have been blessed with great mothers surrounding me throughout my life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day each year, I often reflect on my childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood. I was raised by a very strong and supportive mother, and as a first grandchild, I also spent many of my younger years with my grandmother. Unfortunately, these two wonderful women are no longer with us today, but the memories and life lessons that I received from them are forever held close to my heart. Having lost my mother to a tragic automobile accident back in 2010 and my grandmother to cancer more recently, you would think that Mother’s Day would approach with some apprehension. However, much to my pleasant surprise, I’ve discovered that Mother’s Day has become one of the most meaningful holidays of the year. Even though the day typically starts with a brief moment of sadness – more like a period of reflection – it quickly turns into a very deep and significant day. Not only do I have an opportunity to celebrate the great memories surrounding my mother and grandmother, I also have the privilege of having several more fantastic mothers that still surround me, support me, and make our lives more meaningful. While there are too many wonderful mothers in our friends and family sphere to mention in this letter, I would like to take a moment to recognize a few of them. First on the list, I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Jessica, for being such an awesome mother to our three kids (as well as many of the neighborhood kids). There are quite a few kiddos around the community (some adults in college now) that have grown Derrick Breaux up calling her “Momma” Breaux. We are all lucky to have you do Publisher what you do. Happy Mother’s Day, Jessica! I would also like to take a moment to send a heartfelt thank you to my mother-in-law Trish and mother-in-law Doreen. Not only are you both incredible influences on our family, but you are also wonderful grandmothers to our kids. We are all extremely happy to have you be a major part of our lives. Happy Mother’s Day, Trish and Doreen! And last but not least, I would like to recognize my sister on this Mother’s Day. Not only is she a great sister, she is also a wonderful mother. I find great joy in watching the way she raises her three children, often displaying the incredibly familiar and nurturing parenting that our mother used with the two of us growing up. It warms my heart beyond words. Happy Mother’s Day, Angelique! And happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the world (past and present) that have impacted our lives. May this Mother’s Day be filled with lots of hugs, special memories, love, and laughter – and maybe some tears.

All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // Dave Currie

“Dave Currie is one of the hardest working coaches in the industry who develops some of the most talented young players in Southern California.”

I came to SD in 1995 and started coaching for Carlsbad Lightning where I was lucky enough to win Nomads Cup with a good U10 boys team. After 1 year there I got recruited by Del mar sharks and had 6 great years coaching both boys and girls teams. The whole club achieved some really good success and was there that i met Jose and Adrian. Our younger program there was very strong and we won a lot of leagues and tournaments. From there I went to SD Surf where I stayed for 13 years coaching on the boys program and had the fortune of coaching some very successful teams. Highlights being winning Nomads, Surf Cups, State Cups, League titles and coming from England getting to take the u15 boys to Manchester United Premier Cup that was played at United's training ground along with Paul and Nico. A great experience made better with the presence of Sir Alex Ferguson watching the games. Two years ago I was lucky again to be asked to coach with Arsenal that has now become SD Force where we will be working on building the club up to compete at higher levels. My philosophy has not changed since the first year coaching, my teams will always try and play the right way. Playing out of the back and getting my teams to play attractive soccer with high energy. The last 2 years have been great and I always look forward to a new season watching the boys develop.

Through her involvement in Key Club, the student-led high school division of Kiwanis International, Sameeksha has been voted “Officer of the Month” and “Club Mom” by her peers. Through Key Club, Sameeksha has served in a variety of volunteer capacities, from beach cleanups to the Walk for Psoriasis. “My favorite events that I’ve done through this club would have to be the local events at the elementary schools,” she shared. “Whether it’s making sundaes at a Valentine’s Day dance or showing

off experiments on a science night, I always enjoy spending time with the kids and seeing them have a good time as well.” Over the last year, Sameeksha has also been volunteering in the ER at an acute care hospital. Outside of school and volunteering, Sameeksha is committed to her training in Bharatanatyam, a type of traditional Indian dance. “Bharatanatyam is one of the most rigorous and difficult dance forms and requires hours of concentrated practice. Initially, it was very tough,” she admitted. “I continued taking classes though, partially because my mom pushed me to, partially because I was sometimes fed during lessons, and partially because when it didn’t hurt, it was kind of fun.” Sameeksha is in her 12th year of training, and she acknowledged, “I don’t think there’s anything else I’m more grateful for that I’ve done in my life.” While she certainly has a lot to boast about, Sameeksha remains humble. “I admire all of the amazing accomplishments people have done; it makes me question what I can do to contribute to the world.” This fall she is headed to one of the UCs, although she hasn’t decided which one yet, and plans to become a psychiatrist. 

ichael and Stephanie attended Brigham Young University, and unbeknownst to one another, they lived in the same apartment complex. One day Michael walked by, and Stephanie and her roommates invited him to join a basketball game in the parking lot. The rest is history! After Michael completed medical school and residency training, they knew they wanted to move back to Stephanie’s hometown and have their children educated in Poway Unified School District (PUSD). Although they began their San Diego time with some of their children at the Dual Language Immersion program in Poway and some at Del Sur, a desire to find a location where they were close to a PUSD elementary, middle, and high school led them to Del Sur. “And now our kids enjoy walking, biking, scootering, or skateboarding to school every day,” the Bradshaws confirmed. All five of the Bradshaw boys attend school at Design39Campus (D39C). Kolby, 14, is an eighth grader. His interests include cross country running, piano, cooking, Boy Scouts, reading, drawing, hiking, and camping. He works as a mentor/mother’s helper and has a dog walking job. Elijah, 13, is a seventh grader. He likes cross country, tree climbing, cooking, piano, Boy Scouts, reading, football, and also has a dog walking job. Camden is 11, in fifth grade, and enjoys piano, Boy Scouts, cooking, rollerblading, playing with their dogs, running, reading, and building with Legos. He has two dog walking jobs. Isaac, 10, is in fourth grade. His favorite activities include running club, piano, Cub Scouts, cooking, swimming, biking, hiking, running, and playing on the trampoline. Courtland, 9, is in third grade and “obsessed” with gymnastics, swimming, running, scootering, biking, Cub Scouts, and piano. Because the Bradshaws wanted to find volunteer opportunities involving the whole family, they started helping once a month at a Homeless Outreach Program hosted by Friends & Family Community Connection (FFCC). “The kids help serve dinner to the homeless and lowincome seniors,” they explained. ”They are encouraged to chat with and get to know the people they are serving, and they often play the piano as entertainment during the dinners.” The Bradshaws purposefully limit the kids’ technology time to encourage family and outdoor time, with Monday nights officially Family Night. The family shared, “And we love to get out and go on family adventures – hiking, bouldering, and exploring new places in the San Diego area.” 

YOUNG ATHLETE RANKS SECOND IN THE STATE

ocal eighth grader Amanda Smith excels on the water – statewide, she’s currently ranked second in her division in slalom waterskiing. She ranks fourth in the Western Region and 20th in the country. Her passion began as a young child riding an inner tube behind a ski boat. With her parents’ encouragement, she quickly progressed to her first slalom ski when she was eight years old. The sport requires strength, balance, and flexibility, as well as the dedication to work past wipeouts and setbacks. The challenge is part of the appeal for Amanda. “What I love about waterskiing is when I get a new personal best by

Amanda works hard to maintain her high grades at Maranatha Christian Schools. She plays the flute and piccolo in the school band, and she loves art and spending time with animals. She also enjoys spending time skiing at her grandfather’s lake house in Newberry Springs. 

F

or Daniel Kim, the owner of EDU Learning Center, the motivation to establish a comprehensive after-school program came from a desire to support working parents and offer a place where the needs of both children and parents are met in the areas of academics and physical education. “I was also motivated to improve the after school environment by centering our programs on our mind, body, and character concept. Our programs strive to teach academic excellence, enhance emotional and physical well-being, and build character within a safe and caring environment,” explained Kim. EDU Learning Center offers after-school care for students in grades K through 12 that includes homework assistance, academic tutoring, SAT preparation, as well as classes in foreign languages (Korean, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish), music, dance (ballet, ballroom, and hip-hop), rhythmic gymnastics, Tae Kwon Do, chess, and visual arts. Transportation is provided from students’ schools to the EDU Learning Center facility in Rancho Bernardo. Classes are offered year-round and special camps, seminars, and sessions are held during non-student days and holidays. EDU Learning Center also has an exciting Summer Camp, providing full day and short day options for children of all ages. Kim, who studied mechanical engineering at San Diego State University and is a fifth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, credits both his academic experiences and those in martial arts for his dedication to helping children and their parents. “The passion, guidance, and leadership I acquired from martial arts allowed me to excel in teaching and granted me the opportunity to work with children in the afterschool environment,” stated Kim. In addition to directing all programs at EDU Learning Center, Kim is the main training instructor for the Tae Kwon Do program. Kim is proud that all instructors and staff at EDU Learning Center 32 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2018

share his passion for working with children and are highly qualified in their areas of instruction. From the time he was young, Kim realized the sacrifices that parents make to provide afterschool enrichment activities for their children. He especially noted how difficult it can be for working parents to drive their students from school to various activities throughout San Diego County. “EDU Learning Center is a place for students to discover their true talents and explore their interests through enrichment activities that are offered in one convenient location. This unity between our programs and activities also allows close bonds to be established among staff, students, and families,” said Kim. EDU Learning Center will be having a Summer Camp from June 18 to Aug. 17, where students will have opportunities to visit local attractions around San Diego County, participate in outdoor/indoor sport activities, maintain or advance their academic skills, and explore new enrichment courses that are not offered during the school year such as cooking, wood shop, C.A.D & C.A.M (Computer Aid Design/ Manufacturing), and STEAM based workshops. The camp offers great flexibility with students’ summer schedules as the programs are offered the entire camp session with new topics and projects introduced weekly. The programs aim to keep students active, stay prepared or ahead in academics, and explore new interests all while having fun and making friends! 

TALENT IN TRAINING Studio West Offers Music Production Camps for Young Musicians

S

tudio West has been San Diego’s premier recording studio for over 40 years, but recently some new clients have been working there. In 2015, owner Peter Dyson started a series of week-long music production camps for middle and high school students, largely due to his own children’s musical journey. “My daughter plays the harp and my son is a drummer. They both had amazing teachers and great experiences performing with various ensembles, but a recording studio is a different environment that helps musicians grow.” The week-long camps involve instruction in songwriting, production and performance. Many students have a background in music theory and traditional instruments, but it’s not a requirement. “A laptop is now a musical instrument, just like a piano or guitar, but to play it requires the same instruction, discipline, and hard work that’s required for more traditional instruments,” said Dyson.

Performing in a studio is intimidating, but students rise to the occasion. As the lead instructor, San Diego songwriter, performer, and father of two multi-instrumentalist preteen boys Shawn Rohlf explains it, “I’m amazed at the musicianship and work ethic of the kids. If they are this good now, where will they be in 10 years?” At the end of the week, parents and students listen to the songs that students have written and produced over the week. The experience leaves many ready for more. As student Chrysta Hlavacek (17) puts it, “Making music with talented artists is my dream job, and going to Studio West helps me get there.” 

Student Cybersecurity Experts Oak Valley Middle School (OVMS) teams placed first and second at the 10th Annual National Youth Cyber Defense Competition in April. CyberAegis Cancer Minor placed first, and CyberAegis Scorpio placed second. CyberPatriot, the National Youth Cyber Education Program, is an Air Force Association dedicated to inspiring student interest in cybersecurity and other STEM fields. Both OVMS teams are coached by Paul Johnson, a senior systems engineer at Northrop Grumman. He explained, “Not only do students learn about cybersecurity and compete in various competitions, but throughout this program they also gain new opportunities and real-life skills such as leadership, grit, determination, collaboration, team spirit, and teamwork.” “Coach Johnson has created a powerhouse program, and I could not be more proud both of these teams and of all of the students in the program,” shared OVMS Principal Casey Currigan. “I am truly blessed to be principal at a school where these opportunities are available and we have such amazing students.” Learn more about the teams at www.cyberaegis.tech.

District Recognizes Del Sur Teacher Del Sur Elementary School teacher Shantel Raquel was recently selected as one of the three 2018 Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Teachers of the Year. Katie Wu of Westview High School and Ana Collins of Valley Elementary School were the other two teachers recognized. Shantel has taught for 18 years and currently teaches a blended first and second grade class. She has a knack for connecting with shy or withdrawn students, and customizes her eclectic teaching approach to best benefit each individual student. She values mistakes as opportunities for students to learn and grow, and she applies her innovative, collaborative approach to projects outside the classroom too, from Literacy Night to the PTA Reflections program. “Teaching is a profession of both the heart and mind,” said Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps. “These teachers are ‘all-in’ when it comes to making a difference in our students’ lives. They recognize it’s not just academics, but meeting students’ social, emotional, and mental health needs that contributes to our students’ overall success.”

Local Schools Recognized 92127’s Monterey Ridge Elementary School and Willow Grove Elementary School, along with Park Village Elementary School in 92129, were recently honored by the California Department of Education’s Distinguished Schools Program. This program replaces the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program after a three-year hiatus, and 287 schools were recognized statewide this year. Schools were assessed for excellence in teaching, learning, collaborating, and gains in academics and performance standards. “I am extremely proud of the success of our schools in implementing their best and innovative practices for the benefit of our students,” said Poway Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps. “From STEM and literacy to the arts and Character Counts, it really is a team effort by staff, students, and our community to create the foundation for college and career readiness.” Monterey Ridge Principal Sal Embry, Willow Grove Principal Amy Huff, and Park Village Principal Mike Mosgrove will be honored at an awards ceremony in Anaheim in May. 36 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2018

The process was an engaging, challenging experience for the contestants. “The most rewarding part of the pageant process would have to be all of the life skills I learned during rehearsals!” Shelby explained. “Throughout the eight or so weeks that we rehearsed for the pageant, I learned self-defense, interview skills, public speaking skills, and how to be poised and confident.” All three look forward to representing their communities at fundraisers, parades, and other community events over the upcoming year. “I am most looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends throughout the year,” shared Devyn. “I’m also looking forward to becoming closer with the rest of the girls on the court.” Isabel agreed, elaborating, “Each young woman on the court dedicates hundreds of hours of community service over the course of her year of service, and I’m proud to be a part of this important work.” Learn more at www.misspoway.com.

2018 Woman of the Year Scripps Ranch resident Cheryl Shaw was recently named the 77th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year for her volunteer work supporting disaster relief and public safety. “Cheryl Shaw is a committed volunteer and resolute leader,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “Her wholehearted support for victims of the 2003 Cedar Fire and 2007 Witch Creek Fire contributed so much to the community.” Cheryl has been chair of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association Neighborhood Watch since 2010. Since then, the group has grown to the largest neighborhood watch group in the county. She organizes an annual Night Out every August to strengthen ties between neighbors and law enforcement, fire safety, and local government offices. She and her husband, Mike, have two children and five grandchildren who are all local. The Woman of the Year program began in 1987 as a State of California effort to celebrate extraordinary women and commemorate Women’s History Month.

The Bernardo Gardeners Club Enjoys Learning,

Volunteering, and Beautifying Our Neighborhoods

42 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2018

m

T

he Bernardo Gardeners Club began in 1974 with only 13 members. Today, the club boasts 104 enthusiastic members, all of them dedicated to the club’s causes of civic beautification and conservation. Club members donate trees every Arbor Day, maintain the library gardens,

provide garden therapy services, and award scholarships to horticulture students. They also, of course, take time to relax, socialize, and trade gardening tips and tricks with fellow members. We talk to Club

President Audrey Koble to learn more.

Q&A with Bernardo Gardeners Club President Audrey Koble What is the history behind the Bernardo Gardeners Club?

The Bernardo Gardeners Club was founded in 1974 by Alma Lee to pursue her interest in gardening. Our success is based on the efforts of dedicated members who support each other to achieve our goals. Together, we continue to grow in both membership and scope. What is the club’s mission?

Our club’s mission is to create, promote, and further interest in horticulture, gardening, floral and landscape design, plant and bird life, and appreciation of the natural beauties of the State of California. We engage in civic beautification and assist in projects for the conservation of our natural resources. How did you personally become involved with the Bernardo Gardeners?

I joined the club in 2007 after a friend invited me to a meeting. I enjoyed meeting the members and the speaker so I joined. I quickly became the webmaster for our website, historian, and the photographer. After five years I took on Membership Oversight – in charge of membership renewals and the database records. What is your current role within the organization, and what duties does it entail?

In July of 2017 I was installed as president. I am still the Membership Oversight Chairlady, which brings me a great deal of satisfaction. I also am the contact person listed on our club’s brochure should someone be interested in learning more about our club. As president, I attend our district’s meetings, assist my chair people when necessary, am in charge of an activity or responsibility should there not be a volunteer (my choice), lead our monthly board and general meetings, and am involved in every activity we offer. What is the most rewarding thing about your role? The most challenging?

Meeting the new members is my most rewarding aspect as

president. It is a pleasure to meet so many nice people. We all share in the love of gardening and wanting to keep learning about all the different aspects of the garden world and being in tune with nature. I’m most challenged during our general meetings by having to squeeze all that we have to talk about in the short amount of allotted time. What are the primary goals of the Bernardo Gardeners, both short-term and long-term?

Short-term: to continue to secure great speakers, offer fabulous and interesting trips and enjoy like-minded gardeners sharing their experience in all aspects of horticulture. Long-term: to keep improving our events, offer more ways to improve our community’s civic beautification needs, and increase ways of attracting new members so our club can continue to grow and thrive. What have been some of the organization’s most memorable projects over the years?

I would say the 2010 Chelsea Garden (in honor of Poway High School’s Chelsea King), formally located by the old RB Post Office on Bernardo Center Dr., was a big one as it was an emotional time in our community. We received the California Garden Club, Inc.’s Palomar District’s First Place Award. The planning and creation of the RB Library’s Children’s Garden and the foyer garden was another source of pride and a memorable experience. Our latest ongoing project is the maintenance of the beautiful roses at Webb Park in Rancho Bernardo. Are there any exciting new projects or events coming up soon?

Although we do not have any meetings in June, July, or August, we do have a bus trip planned for June 21 to visit a botanical garden and a nursery with international plants in Vista. In July we will have, by invitation, a new member brunch at a member’s beautiful home. September will be our first meeting and will feature an expert speaker to talk about vermicomposting. C O V E R F E AT U R E

October we will be having a bus trip to the Huntington Library and Gardens with an optional “English Tea” Service. Can you tell us a bit about some recent guest speakers? What have been some memorable presentations over the past year?

Our last few speakers were crowd-pleasers. The very knowledgeable David Ross, Sr. Manager of Walter Andersen’s Nursery/Poway, presented plants that grow best in our area and new plant varieties. The dynamic Giselle Schoniger from Kellogg Garden Products captivated our members and guests with her discussion on the different soil amendments Kellogg offers and soil requirements for specific plants and trees. We have had so many great speakers over time. The Bat Lady, Francie Spears, who brought her bat Ollie to a rather slightly scared but fascinated audience, was terrific. Team speakers Bert and Sharon Kersey, whose video “Back Yard Barn Owls” brought out laughter, shrieks, and giggles by attendees. Can you tell us a bit about your annual garden tour event? How did this year’s tour go?

Great! We offered attendees five gardens to visit in the Rancho Bernardo/Poway area. The weather was beautiful despite a gloomy forecast of rain, and 200+ people thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Lovely comments were made with the repeated message that all the homes were unique and gave them ideas for their home landscaping projects.

of our club’s mission. Volunteers maintain the Children’s Garden at the RB Library and the garden at the library entrance. Our club also creates a plant or flower arrangement at the library weekly. We donate funds to three local schools and are looking for another elementary school, hopefully in the 4S Ranch area. How would somebody go about joining the Bernardo Gardeners? What is the criteria for membership?

The only criteria for becoming a member is enjoying being with others while improving garden knowledge in a fun atmosphere. Annual membership dues are $25 per person or $35 for a person and their spouse or significant other. Membership dues are due each June 1. An application form is in the colorful brochure featured in the foyer of the RB Library. One can go onto www.bernardogardenersclub.org to the “Join Us” tab and print out an application form and with their check, mail it to the address indicated on the application. There is also an email address listed on the “Join Us” tab should a person wish to contact an officer for further information.

Is there anything you’d like to share that most people don’t know about the Bernardo Gardeners?

We offer three trips a year to various garden-related sites throughout Southern California, with an emphasis on San Diego County. We have five meetings a year where we feature a speaker who is an expert in his/her field. We have many community-related projects and offer scholarships to students transferring to a four-year college or learning institution majoring in horticulture studies. We also contribute to the Backyard Produce Project, which grows food for local needy people. In addition, we donate funds to support three local elementary schools. Is there anything else you would like to add for our 92127 Magazine readers?

We look forward to meeting residents in the 92127 zip code area and we would be happy to welcome them into our club. 

FROM THE DENTIST

SHARK TEETH

Don’t Panic About this Common Phenomenon by DR. SPENCER MAUSETH, 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics

A

visit from the tooth fairy is a childhood rite of passage that usually happens around age five or six. It’s an exciting time for kids and parents alike. However, sometimes the excitement is overshadowed by concern if a permanent tooth erupts before the baby tooth falls out. If the adult tooth erupts behind the baby tooth, both teeth can be present at the same time. When this happens, it is called “shark teeth,” since sharks naturally have several rows of teeth. Although it may look and sound a bit scary, the occurrence of shark teeth is actually quite common and rarely becomes a long-term issue. Shark teeth often develop around age six, which is when the lower front teeth (incisors) begin to erupt. Other children may experience shark teeth around age 11 when the upper back

molars start to grow in. However, shark teeth can occur at any age and can also affect teeth other than the front incisors and back molars. Typically, an adult tooth erupts directly underneath the root of the baby tooth, causing the baby tooth to loosen and eventually fall out. In this process, special cells called odontoclasts are produced. These cells cause the root of the baby tooth to dissolve and be reabsorbed. In turn, the baby tooth falls out, leaving room for the adult tooth to grow in its place. However, when the permanent tooth erupts behind the baby tooth, it is not pushing on the root of the baby tooth and the process is disrupted. If the baby tooth is already loose while the adult tooth is coming in, the baby tooth may come out on its own. Since kids are prone to wiggle a loose tooth, this may aid in the process by disrupting root attachment. However, if the baby tooth remains firmly in place and the permanent tooth erupts completely, the baby tooth may need to be extracted.

While shark teeth are common and may not cause any problems down the road, it’s important to schedule regular appointments with a pediatric dentist to monitor the situation. Shark teeth can be hard to clean, so they can increase the risk of cavities or gum tissue problems. If the baby tooth does need to be extracted, a pediatric dentist can determine the right course of action. 

Racing Successes

LOCAL CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK STARS COMMIT TO COLLEGE TEAMS

T

wo Del Norte High School (DNHS) cross country and track and field athletes recently committed to continuing their racing careers in college. Isabelle Davis signed to San Diego State University (SDSU), and Jaron Farnham signed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO). Both won the DNHS 2017 XC Iron Man and Woman Award, which recognizes the most influential cross country team members for the year. They were the top runners for the year as well. The two seniors also share a history of family friendship. Their parents were friends and soccer teammates in Valencia, and Isabelle and Jaron first met when they were only a few months old. The Farnham family moved to Del Sur when Jaron was two years old; the Davis family moved to the 92127 area years later, before Isabelle’s freshman year of high school. Both Isabelle and Jaron played soccer – following in their dads’ footsteps – and started cross country and track as extra training. They soon discovered

their talent and passion for running. Both families have been enthusiastic cheerleaders over the years through the young athletes’ triumphs and challenges. Jaron had a major setback his sophomore year when leg pain kept him from running for half a year. Isabelle’s father issued a challenge: attend track practice for at least three days in a row or wash his car every day for a week. Jaron returned to practice and got hooked once again. He and Isabelle can look forward to further success at Cal Poly SLO and SDSU this fall. 

Golfing for a Better Life

TOBY WELLS FOUNDATION GOLF CLASSIC WILL HELP KIDS AND ANIMALS

T

he Toby Wells Foundation will hold its 17th Annual Toby Wells & Craig Castaneda Golf Classic on June 8 at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside. The tournament is the foundation’s primary fundraising tool to fund all of the programs that provide support to hundreds of underprivileged children and neglected animals throughout San Diego County and other parts of Southern California. The Toby Wells Foundation was first established after Adrienne Wells and April West began searching for ways to raise funds and awareness and honor the memory of their brother Toby, who died 18 years ago from medical complications after paralysis from a swimming accident. The tournament began shortly after the foundation’s establishment, when the Wells family purchased a 300-acre ranch called Blue Apple Ranch.

The ranch is populated with several types of rescued animals who are cared for by disenfranchised and disabled children. Toby was known for his love of animals and frequently rescued dogs in animal shelters. Proceeds from the tournament will go to funding a one-day, outdoor afternoon of fun for 250 local foster youth through the nonprofit Voices for Children, field trips for children of military households through the Armed Services YMCA, a workreadiness internship for foster youth at San Pasqual Academy

and at-risk youth from Abraxas High School and Warner Springs High School, a holiday shopping spree for Polinsky Children’s Center and the Armed Services YMCA whereby each child receives a $200 gift card to WalMart, and assisting in caring for Blue Apple Ranch’s rescued animals. For more information about the foundation or to buy tickets to the tournament visit www.tobywells.org. 

Today, it continues to do just that, offering members summer camps, swim and tennis lessons, preschool, fitness, facility rentals, and more. “As one of the first home-owners associations in the area, our ARC committee has been able to keep the homes looking nice for close to 50 years,” Steven shared. “This is a neighborhood that has aged gracefully. The club is a gathering place for many local to the area. We feel we have and will continue to provide our family of members generations of lasting memories.” All club members are invited to the anniversary celebration on May 19. Running for Hope

O

ver the past winter, Del Norte junior Maggie Basinger started an afterschool running program at Oak Valley Middle School (OVMS). Two days a week, from the end of the OVMS cross country season in the fall to the Finish Chelsea’s Run in March, middle schoolers worked hard to stay in shape for the March 5K. Maggie started the program because she enjoyed doing a running program over the summer for middle school girls, and she became inspired to lead a similar program over the winter. “My siblings’ middle school cross country season was about to end in late fall, and I wanted to continue it because Oak Valley promotes Chelsea’s Run,” she

added. Finish Chelsea’s Run is an annual race in Balboa Park to honor Chelsea King, a Poway High School student who lost her life while running at Lake Hodges. Money raised by the run supports the Sunflower Scholarship Fund, which provides academic and extracurricular scholarships for deserving teens. Every year, OVMS has put together a team to run at the 5K, so a great way to supplement this was to train as a team over the winter. OVMS runners worked hard at their practices. The runners would meet on the blacktop, run two laps around the basketball courts as a warm up, and do active stretching drills together. Then, they

would set off on a run. Afterwards, they would sometimes do a relay, which included sprints and other activities, and finish practice with team stretching. When they finally crossed the finish line at the March 5K, the months of training helped the middle schoolers have a strong, fun race. The environment at the race was exciting because they had been working towards that moment since the fall, and everyone was glad to finish Chelsea’s run in a race for hope. 

Summer Fun Returns at the San Diego County Fair by LAINEY KRAL photos ©agezinder/123RF.COM

O

ne of San Diego’s most beloved traditions returns on June 1. The San Diego County Fair – whose theme this year is How Sweet It Is! – was first established in 1880 and arrived at its current home, the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in 1936. The fair has undergone a number of name changes over the past 138 years, and though the name was changed back to the original San Diego County Fair in 2002, many locals still know it as the Del Mar Fair. The fair offers a wide range of attractions and events, from famously adventurous fair food to dizzying carnival rides. Community members of all ages have the opportunity to showcase their talents as well, with competitions and exhibitions for collections, crafts, wine and beer, fine art, fashion, floral design, and of course, livestock of all shapes and sizes. Summer concerts are another popular draw, and this year includes a variety of artists from Little Big Town to Kansas and more. The fair will run June 1 through July 4, and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in June. Hours vary from day to day, so check times and find out about more special events at www.sdfair.com. 

BEAT THE HEAT!

PLAN FOR PARKING!

Check the weather ahead of time and dress in comfortable clothes for walking. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are a good idea for sunny days, and bring a water bottle if you're staying all day.

Onsite parking is available, as well as free offsite parking with shuttle service to the fair. Due to crowds and traffic, getting there can be hectic – be sure to leave with plenty of time to get to any special events you’re looking forward to.

Predicting Our Summer Real Estate Market by SCOTT VOAK

N

ever make short-term predictions in real estate. You’re bound to look like a fool. With that said, here’s a short-term prediction: I believe the entry and first move-up markets ($500k to $900k in 92127) will see a bit of a slowdown from now through May (I am writing this in early April). I believe that in June we will see a lot of new buyers enter the market and push prices on the smaller homes up. I also think that that activity will spur additional sales in the $1.3M to $1.8M market as sellers of the sub-$1M homes are able to move up. The driver for this is Qualcomm. In our area, there aren’t too many streets that do not have a Qualcomm employee living on them. People in the technical fields value education, and Poway Unified School District has the best education for the housing dollar in San Diego. Additionally, the master-planned communities of 4S Ranch and Del Sur provide clusters of similarly aged families and activities. I know, the Broadcom takeover is dead, so why is Qualcomm important? As part of fending off the takeover attempt, Qualcomm committed to restructure and streamline (bad code words for “we’re going to lay off a lot of people”). We started to see the impact of this in late March when buyers working at Qualcomm cancelled several escrows in the area because they were told not to make a major purchase until the

employment situation is clearer – the end of May. Last time there was a potential layoff at Qualcomm, the market slowed and open house traffic fell until the layoff notices went out and people knew their job situation. We literally went from six to eight people through an open house to 40 in one week, and two thirds of families had an employee of Qualcomm. So, just based on history, I expect the next couple of months to be more reserved than normal (nice homes that are well-presented and marketed will still sell) and then activity to increase once we get to June. To answer the follow-up question I know you have: no, I don’t think we will see a flood of homes coming on the market from those who are laid off. The severance packages are usually pretty good, and it will take them a while to determine if they are going to stay here or have to move for a new job. Now, all I need is for the market to not make me look like a fool. 
