It’s Not Just a Jeep!

’ve always loved the idea of buying an old Jeep and refurbishing it. Once, I even convinced my wife to ride with me to check out a few. After seeing them, she eventually talked some sense into me and made me realize a project of that caliber was not in our family’s best interest. Fast forward many years. Apparently, my son – soon to be getting his driver’s permit – inherited the Jeep bug. There’s no doubt that he would have preferred a brandnew Jeep, but once I let him know what new Jeeps cost, he quickly changed his mind. So, we developed a plan. We would find a used Jeep that we could refurbish together as a father-son project. The search became a near obsession. On a daily basis, my son would slide his phone in front of my face asking what about this one? For a variety of reasons, my answer was always the same – not that one. Then, about a year ago, he showed me a Jeep. It wasn’t pretty. At 29 years old, it had clearly lived a long and “fun” life. It had scrapes, dents, some rust, and a very rough interior. But it had something that caught our attention – a brand new engine and new tires! As a family, we drove down to take a look at it. I strategically requested that my wife test drive it, with our son in the passenger seat. That’s all it took! We became the proud owners of a 1989 Jeep Wrangler. My son and I slowly and meticulously began to refurbish it. We did as close to a frame-off restoration as our budget allowed. We spent many days and nights working on the Jeep. Our goal was to have every part of the Jeep that you can see look as it did when it was driven off the factory floor 30 years ago. Along the journey, my son and I spent a lot of quality time together. We laughed. We got our hands dirty. We banged up our knuckles, figured out ways to remove and replace parts that didn’t want to be removed, and definitely shared moments of frustration. And yes, there was lots of physical exhaustion and sweat! There’s no longer a tool in my toolbox that I wouldn’t trust my son to use. This project allowed my son and me to bond beyond the normal busy lives that we all know. We took turns listening to each other’s music playlist. We talked about things that would typically require a “scheduled” conversation. We worked together on a common goal, without immediate gratification. I am so thankful for the opportunity this Jeep gave us. While the obvious outcome is a 1989 Jeep Wrangler that looks better today than it did 30 years ago, it’s not just a Jeep. It’s memories. It’s pride. It’s driving something down the road that you worked on with your own hands. We will remember and talk about this project for the rest of our lives. im and Jane Lea Smith are enamored with San Diego’s beautiful local nature trails. While on hikes led by volunteers with the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy (SDRVC), Jim was inspired to join up and lead his own hikes throughout Crest Canyon, the San Dieguito Lagoon, and Lake Hodges. Jim eventually became a SDRVC Board member, and both he and his wife also act as co-administrators for SDRVC’s Exploring Our Sense of Place (ESP) program. Describing the ESP program in more detail, Jane Lea proclaimed, “It is a popular educational, social, hiking program in which participants explore the watershed through a series of Saturday excursions from October through May. We start at the Volcan Mountain headwaters and wind up at the San Dieguito Lagoon. The program is limited to 25 participants, or ‘Explorers,’ but we encourage alumni to participate as volunteers.” Jim added, “Each excursion starts with a light breakfast and social gathering, followed by an expert presentation on a topic related to the area. The expert then leads the group on an informative hike. Our ESP experts are well-known in their field and cover a range of topics, including local birds, native plants and wildflowers, Native Americans, geology, archaeology, and the ongoing San Dieguito Lagoon restoration.”

In addition to his ESP tasks, Jim is a member of the Acquisitions and Trails committee, which helps acquire land in the watershed to ultimately close the gaps in the Coast to Crest Trail. He also leads volunteers in removing invasive species in the Crest Canyon on the fourth Saturday of the month, and maintains trails around the lagoon/ Dust Devil Park area through the Dust Devil volunteer group. As for Jane Lea, she helps out as much as she can at Canyon Crest Academy, the high school the couple’s 14-year-old daughter, Emma, attends. Asked what they love most about volunteering for local nature walk-related causes, Jim exclaimed, “We feel good about engaging in activities that support the health of our environment.” Jane Lea added, “We are committed to appreciating the beauty and natural diversity that San Diego has to offer. We especially appreciate that we can work closely together on a shared passion, meet new people, and always learn something new!” 

Sabre Springs’ Nutmeg Bakery and Cafe is expanding to Scripps Ranch with a new location scheduled to open in September. Local Star’s Great Escape JACKIE FOSTER SHARES HER VOICE IN DEBUT SINGLE

an Diego local and worldwide singing sensation Jackie Foster is launching the next step of her musical journey with the release of her first single and her first festival appearance. Last year, the Poway High School graduate appeared on season 14 of The Voice, reaching the semifinals under the guidance of her coach, Alicia Keys. The show was a whirlwind learning experience, and now Jackie is ready to make her individual mark on the music industry. Her single, “Great Escape,” debuted on July 26. Jackie was inspired to open up about the artistic struggles she faced after her time on The Voice ended. “I felt empty, like I lost my purpose,” she shared. “I lost the show which was like a family to me and I lost my

band all at once. But then I stopped and I realized, I’ve experienced success, I got national recognition, and I’m not going to let anything stop me from getting it again. Everything falling apart was my great escape to finding my purpose.” She’s proud of what she’s accomplished with this song. “I sat in my room and started humming the guitar line. I couldn’t stop singing it for weeks!” she said. “My goal was to write a memorable song that was easy to sing along to but also empower listeners to face their fears and put all doubts aside.” Jackie also had a blast at her debut festival appearance at Lollapalooza in Chicago this August. DISCUSSION-BASED LEARNING IN MIDDLE SCHOOL

iddle school is a time of both challenge and opportunity. Students face increasing social distractions and often larger classes, making it easier for them to “check out.” Yet, developmentally, adolescents are primed for intellectual growth. One of the best ways to keep middle school students learning is through active discussion. At Pacific Ridge School, they use Harkness, a teaching method in which an average of 15 students sit with their teacher around an oval table and coursework is collaboratively discussed. SOME BENEFITS ARE: Engagement: Harkness is studentcentered. Rather than passively receiving information, students participate in obtaining, sharing, and evaluating it. Everyone has a seat at the table – students have a voice and their peers listen.

Skill building: Harkness helps students develop a cache of important skills, such as critical thinking, fact-based observation, effective speaking, respectful listening, collaboration, and an appreciation for differing perspectives. Conﬁdence: Adolescents want their opinion to matter, and are pleasantly surprised when it does. Students take intellectual risks in Harkness, gaining confidence interacting with peers and adults alike.

BEST DIET For Healthy Children’s Teeth by SPENCER MAUSETH, D.D.S., 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics

o, you’ve taught your child the basics of dental hygiene and how to brush their teeth twice daily. However, don’t forget that the secret to healthy teeth might also be in your child’s diet! Food can have a serious impact on our teeth – for better or for worse. Here we have a helpful list of the dos and don’ts when it comes to the best diet for healthy children’s teeth. FOODS TO INCORPORATE • Water With Fluoride: Almost all drinking water contains ﬂuoride, but some bottled varieties do not. It is always a good idea to check to make sure. • Apples: Eating apples and other crunchy, highfiber fruits can help to remove plaque from teeth. • Dairy: Milk, cheese, and yogurt are rich in calcium and phosphorus, which can protect tooth enamel. The nutrients in milk products can neutralize some of the acid produced by plaque bacteria. • Celery and Carrots: These crunchy vegetables contain a lot of water and require a lot of chewing, which can scrub tooth surfaces. The

water and fiber in these vegetables balance the sugars and help clean teeth. • Broccoli and Green Leafy Vegetables: The folic acid found in leafy greens such as spinach and kale is known to help improve the health of teeth and gums. • Eggs: Eggs are an excellent source of calcium, protein, and vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed to absorb calcium, which builds and maintains strong, healthy teeth. • Nuts and Seeds: The high amount of calcium and phosphorus in nuts and seeds such as almonds, peanuts, and cashews help to protect tooth enamel. FOODS TO AVOID • Candy: Sugar can cause cavities and get stuck in crevices in the tooth. Extra-chewy candies like caramels stick to teeth for a long time, which can dissolve tooth enamel. Candies that are chewy, sugary, and acidic, like sour candies, are the most damaging. Many dried fruits are also sticky and contain added sugar. • Sugary Drinks: Organisms feed on the sugar on your teeth and turn it into acid, which

destroys tooth enamel and causes decay. The acids and sugar found in fizzy drinks combine to cause tooth damage. Non-fizzy sports drinks are still acidic and sugary. • Citrus Fruit and Juices: Citrus fruits are a source of Vitamin C and nutrients. However, grapefruit and lemon in particular are highly acidic and can erode tooth enamel over time if consumed in high levels. Juices often contain high levels of sugar, which can cause tooth decay. Drinking milk and water is a better option for healthy children’s teeth. 

New Principal at Oak Valley Middle School

Bob Wells Way Honors Mr. RB

Oak Valley Middle School began the 2019-2020 school year with a new principal. Mr. Colin Young was appointed over the summer, officially beginning his role on July 1. Mr. Young joined Poway Unified School District as a social science teacher at Poway High School, then became an assistant principal at Mt. Carmel High School. He most recently served as an assistant principal at Poway High School. His service-minded leadership has lead to improved student culture and outcomes at the schools where he served, and he was named the 2019 Secondary Co-Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators. “My focus will be to make quality, lasting, and trusting relationships with all stakeholders, inspire staff to strive for continual personal growth, ensure that all students have a safe learning environment conducive to personal development and educational mastery, communicate regularly with all staff members, and most importantly, carry out the vision all stakeholders have for Oak Valley Middle School,” Mr. Young said in a message to Oak Valley families.

The 12200 block of Calle Saucillo is now known as Bob Wells Way, an honorary street name recognizing the tremendous impact of the late Bob Wells. At the unveiling ceremony, Councilman Mark Kersey said, “The variety of nonprofit and business leaders who are here in support today is a testament to how involved Bob was in the community.” The longtime civic leader was often referred to as Mr. RB for his dedicated involvement. He was one of the founders of the Rancho Bernardo Business Association and Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, inducted into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame in 1993, and named RB Honorary Mayor in 1997. He passed away in 2012. “When he and our mom moved here in 1985, neither of them anticipated that they would play such a visible and influential role in the evolution of RB,” shared David Wells, Bob’s son. “Were he alive today for this honor, in a rare moment I think our dad would be speechless!”

SKY Facial Plastic Surgery recently hosted #SKY5Year, the boutique practice’s fifth anniversary celebration. Owners Sirius K. Yoo, M.D., and Amber N. Yoo, M.B.A., welcomed the community to SKY’s 4S Ranch location for a cocktail reception, hors d’oeuvres, opportunity drawings, and philanthropy. All proceeds from the event benefited FACE Foundation, a local nonprofit that provides funding to families who can’t afford life-saving treatment for their pets. Guests mingled with Dr. Yoo, who recently won Best in Plastic Surgery in the Union Tribune’s reader’s poll and has been named San Diego’s Best Facial Plastic Surgeon by Ranch & Coast magazine for the past four years. Experts were available to explain lasers, injectables, and skincare products. #SKY5Year raised enough to save the lives of two animals in need. The SKY team is looking forward to #SKY6Year, scheduled for March 25, 2020.

The RB Chorale is currently open to anyone who loves to sing, especially tenors and basses, ahead of its annual holiday show. This year’s program will be directed by Jim Tompkins MacLaine, serving as interim director. He has worked with founder and director Pat Bean and the RB Chorale in previous years. The Chorale’s annual holiday show will be held Dec. 21 and 22 at Poway Center for the Performing Arts, and rehearsals begin on Sept. 10. Rehearsals are held every Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Painted Rock Elementary School. Prospective members must join the Chorale by Oct. 1 to take part in the December shows. Veteran of the Year Danny Jackson was recently recognized as the 77th Assembly District’s 2019 Veteran of the Year. Danny honorably served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division from 1969 to 1970 during the Vietnam War, followed by a 37year career in the postal service. Now retired in San Diego, Danny continues to serve his community through the Veterans of Foreign Wars Poway Post 7907. He has worked to reduce homelessness and suicide rates among veterans, increase employment opportunities for exiting active duty military, support deported veterans and military families, and foster civic engagement in the electoral process. “Danny Jackson courageously served our nation and is a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “I am truly grateful for his patriotic dedication to our country and its people.” Danny lives in Rancho Peñasquitos with his wife Eva. They have six children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

athedral Catholic High School’s (CCHS) core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility have guided the development of high-achieving, well-rounded leaders for over 60 years. The CCHS legacy has deep roots, though the name is only 12 years old. Cathedral Girls High School merged with University San Diego High School (UNI) in

1970 on UNI’s Linda Vista Campus. UNI transitioned to the current CCHS Campus in Carmel Valley in 2005 and took on the new name of Cathedral Catholic High School. “No matter what campus you were on, once you become a Don, you’re always a Don,” said CCHS President Mr. Stevan Laaperi. “The Dons’ legacy has never been stronger. Over 50 alumni are among the CCHS team of

administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff.” The professional staff is well qualified to uphold that legacy. Most teachers have a master’s degree or higher in the subject they teach, and the entire staff strives to model the values of a Catholic faith community. he Rancho Bernardo Lions Club has brought community members together to make a difference for more than 50 years. Their impact can be seen throughout the community, from contributing to the

foundation of the Rancho Bernardo Library to inspiring high school students to volunteer. RB Lions, like the international organization, focus their volunteer efforts on supporting the blind and vision-impaired. We learn more about that mission from RB Lions President Betty Jean Dye.

Betty Jean Dye What is the Lions Club mission? “Lions are knights of the blind and seeing impaired.” At the Lions Clubs International Convention in Ohio, in 1925, Ms. Helen Keller, the guest speaker, challenged Lions to become the knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.

What is the history of the RB Lions Club? Our club was chartered in 1964. The community of Rancho Bernardo was started as a planned community in 1961. In 1917, Melvin Jones, a wealthy Chicago insurance man, convinced his fellow members to help the less fortunate in their community. This was the start of the Lions Clubs International, a business men’s club. In the late 1980s, women were permitted to join Lions.

What communities and organizations does the club serve? Rancho Bernardo. We work with health technicians in the Poway Unified School District, San Diego Center for the Blind San Diego/Vista locations, Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation, and Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

How did you personally become involved with RB Lions? My neighbors were members and invited me to a meeting after retiring in 2004. The mission of

the club was not just attending luncheons, but being an active volunteer in community fundraisers, holding vision screenings, and getting free eye exams and prescription eyeglasses for low income students in the Poway Unified School District. LensCrafters partners with our club in their One Sight program.

What is your current role within the organization, and what duties does it involve? President/Secretary/Membership. Guiding the club members, committees, and getting new members involved with our motto, “We serve.” Where there is a need, there is a Lion.

What is the most rewarding thing about your role? The most challenging? Rewarding: Each October, for over 40 years, the club has held World Service Day for the Blind and Seeing Impaired. Our guests are bused from San Diego Center for the Blind, Lions Optometric Vision Center, and Blind Community Center of SD. Lions and volunteers serve lunch to the guests. Each year, guests look forward to this annual event. Entertainment is provided by Vincent Young, a sight-impaired and talented young man.

What are the RB Lions’ primary goals, both short-term and long-term? Short-term: Having more members that have a passion for volunteering to meet the needs of those less fortunate. Long-term: With increased members, we can reach out to the community to continue programs for the blind and seeing impaired. We have 10 collection boxes in RB for used eyeglasses and hearing aids, including at the Rancho Bernardo Library and Rancho Bernardo Senior Services.

Can you tell us more about your high school branch? Lion Greg Cody is our LEO Club Adviser at Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS), teaching community service. LEOs decorate the Lions Clubs International float for the Rose Parade each December, participate in the Student Speaker Contest competing for cash prizes, volunteer at I

Love a Clean SD, and place floral wreaths at the graves of KIA and veterans at Miramar National Cemetery each Memorial Day. This year, LEO Morgan Perry was LEO of the Year 2018-2019 from RBHS. Our Treasurer, Justin Souter, was a LEO at RBHS!

Can you tell us about the upcoming White Cane Fund Drive? The Annual White Cane Drive is held each October soliciting donations from our community. Albertsons and Vons are the two storefronts where Lions, LEOs, and puppy raisers from Guide Dogs for the Blind will be at the stores on Oct. 18 and Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Without the support of the community we could not continue to donate funds to the organizations we have supported these past 55 years. 100% of the funds raised are donated.

What have been some of the organization’s most memorable achievements over the years? Purchasing buses in the 1960s and

1970s for San Diego Center for the Blind, pledging $6,000 to the construction of the new Rancho Bernardo Library, donating funds to RBHS Music Building, monthly donations to SD Center for the Blind. Six month classes are available at SD Center for the Blind for the visually impaired to live independently.

How can community members get involved or support the club? Becoming a new member or supporting our cause by a donation; any amount is appreciated. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 28361, San Diego, CA 92198. There are no admin fees, since we are all volunteers.

Who is eligible for membership? If you have a heart for service, we welcome you to join us.

LOCAL GIRL SCOUT HONORED FOR GOLD AWARD

anasvi Vora of 4S Ranch has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the organization’s highest honor awarded to Girls Scouts for demonstrating extraordinary leadership by creating sustainable solutions that address society’s greatest challenges. For her Gold Award project, Manasvi decided to take action to combat mental health

Manasvi joined Girl Scout Troop 8725 as a Brownie and has also earned the Girl Scout Bronze and Silver Awards. She is a second-generation Girl Scout – her mother, Rupali Vora, was a Girl Scout in India. Manasvi will graduate with the Del Norte High School Class of 2020. Her other honors include the Scholastic Art & Writing Gold Key award from the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. mbarking on a new career can be a daunting task, especially when it involves diving into a high-energy, high-profile one such as audio engineering. But switching up careers later in life is something that seemed like a “no-brainer” to several audio enthusiasts after taking part in the Electronic Production Package (EPP) at Studio West. Like their fellow classmates, these students initially enrolled in the EPP program as a fun way to expand their skills in what seemed like an after-work hobby. However, once involved in the program, what started as a hobby soon began looking more like a viable career option. “Oftentimes we see some of the more casual enthusiasts enter the program with the idea that this is for fun or good for a side business. But once they start working with our instructors, getting hands-on engineering experience in a working recording studio, we see a shift in focus. Folks with a regular 9-to5 job they aren’t 100% invested in realize that their passion can be turned into a viable

career,” explained Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admissions for The Recording Arts Center (TRAC) at Studio West. Todd explained further, “When the class is over, the next logical step to launch a career in the industry is to acquire more experience and get the in-depth training that can lead to a successful career in audio engineering. Many find this in our year-long Diploma program.” One student, Isaiah, finished the EPP program last month and immediately enrolled in the Diploma Program. His classes began on Monday, and he couldn’t be more thrilled about his choice. “It was so much fun working a real recording studio. As LINK Crew co-advisor Mr. Nevares puts it, the goal of LINK Crew is “to provide a supportive and seamless transition into high school for incoming freshmen.” While LINK Crew exists at several high schools across the nation, Del Norte’s LINK Crew has several characteristics that distinguish

it from other schools. For one, Del Norte’s LINK Crew is larger than that of most schools because it holds the welcoming assembly on the first day of school. On the first day, the club provides an engaging day that features ice breakers, a school tour, and a chance to meet some upperclassmen that will serve as mentors and support with the transition. While the program primarily focuses on freshman, Del Norte also extends its attention to students transferring in who happen to be in upper grades by providing new student tours and other outreach programs. Additionally, Del Norte ensures the smooth functioning of its club with its

HIKING SAN DIEGO Explore New Hiking Trails in North County by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

ith temperature highs hovering comfortably in the 70s, the fall months are the perfect time to get out and explore local hiking trails. North County has something for everyone, from relaxed walking paths to challenging hills. So lace up your hiking boots and enjoy the view! 

LOS PEÑASQUITOS CANYON PRESERVE

COAST TO CREST TRAIL

With relatively flat trail routes, a hike through the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is great for all ages and skill levels. You’re sure to see much of the canyon’s wide variety of flora and fauna, as well as creeks, streams, and a waterfall cascading through volcanic rock. www.penasquitos.org

With about 48 miles of the planned 71 total miles completed, this trail extends from the ocean in Del Mar to the Volcan Mountain near Julian and contains eight sections with many smaller trails of varying intensity. www.sdrp.org

TORREY PINES STATE NATURAL RESERVE The main reserve area has six different trails hugging the coastline with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and acres of rare Torrey pine trees, making Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve a must on a sunny day. www.torreypine.org

DOUBLE PEAK Starting at Discovery Lake Park in San Marcos, this moderate five-mile loop trail offers panoramic views of North County at the summit. Much of the brush along the trail was burned by fires, so there is little shade on this route. www.san-marcos.net

BLACK MOUNTAIN While Black Mountain Open Space Park contains many chaparral and sage-lined hiking trails, Black Mountain itself is only accessible by two trailheads. It’s a moderate hike to the summit, which provides 360-degree views of the surrounding area, even out to the ocean on clear days. www.sandiego.gov

IRON MOUNTAIN This popular six-mile round trip hike is moderately difficult, with a clearly marked trailhead and boulder-lined trail leading to expansive views at the summit. www.poway.org

Soccer has been a part of my life since I was very young, and I knew it would follow me no matter where life takes me. I have played competitively since elementary school, was on my high school varsity team for four years, played in college, and continue to play to this day. The passion I have for this game has never faltered and being an influence on young minds as a coach has only strengthened that passion. I appreciate the close-knit family that Force FC provides its players and coaches alike. All the coaches are willing to help each other out, and players are motivated to learn in a supportive and progressive environment. I strive for my players to be the best they can be and to always provide them with constructive criticism and encouragement. I love watching them grow! I also coach the junior varsity team at Del Norte High School, which allows me the unique opportunity to work with many of the same players year-round. I recently graduated from CSU San Marcos with a biology degree. I’m currently working on my master’s in supply chain management, then plan on going to dental school. In my free time I like to go rock crawling in Big Bear, ride quads in the desert, and spend time with family and friends. You may see me around the local fields supporting my brother and sister, who are following in my footsteps. We are a soccer-loving family!
