FROM THE PUBLISHER VO L . 11 , N O. 3 TM

We Are Back! T

his is the first publisher letter that I have written in nearly five months. It wasn’t until a few weeks after the COVID-19 pandemic caused our local businesses to be shut down that I truly began to realize the magnitude of the situation. When I decided to start publishing magazines back in 2009, I could never have imagined being contacted by nearly every one of our advertisers (within a few weeks’ time) letting us know that they had been forced to close and could no longer advertise. There’s no business playbook for this type of scenario. Being active in the community – both personally and professionally – has let me witness a wide range of vastly different effects that COVID-19 has caused. Many, especially those who work for large companies, have been fortunate to keep their jobs and work from home. On the other hand, COVID-19 has put the majority of small businesses, their employees, and their owners in an unprecedented and extremely difficult situation. Many small to medium-sized business will not survive this pandemic. As a magazine that caters to small businesses, we’ve already started hearing from some of our advertising partners that they have permanently closed their doors or plan to close in the coming weeks. This news breaks my heart, as I have witnessed the emotional and financial devastation that takes place when a business owner has to make the dreaded call to cease operations. This is our first issue of 92127 Magazine since April. There are two primary reasons that we were able to get this comeback issue to your home. First, the advertisers throughout the pages of this magazine have made the financial commitment to participate. Second, our team here at ZCode has worked hard to get things back up and running. I would like to shout out a special thank you to all that have made this commitment. And as a member of our community (and reader of this magazine), I ask that you do so as well.

THE ASK We have been publishing 92127 Magazine since 2009. It is our mission to provide a beautiful locally DERRICK BREAUX | Publisher owned community magazine – all created by local employees – that you look forward to receiving. Year after year, issue after issue, these magazines have arrived in your mailbox for free. Our amazing advertising partners have made this possible with their financial investments and commitment to the community. Now we need and ask for your help! Our goal is to continue providing a quality publication that benefits you (our amazing readers), the community, and our local businesses. We ask that you take a moment to make a small donation of $19.95 to help offset the costs of distributing this magazine to your home and throughout the community. Your donation will also allow us to assist our advertisers so they can continue to gain the exposure that this magazine provides. All you have to do is scan the QR code below or visit the link. Your contribution will have an amazing impact on the magazine and ensure that it continues for years to come. Thank you for being a reader of 92127 Magazine. Stay safe and healthy! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

win brothers Ian and Kane Xu founded a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2019 called Project Art of Learning. The program provides free one-on-one STEM tutoring to underprivileged students grades K-12. Ian explained that his ongoing passion for STEM has given him the opportunity to interact at outreach events with students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. These interactions made him realize how many of them had a strong desire to learn, but lacked the educational opportunities to reach their potential. Though outreach events are important for sparking interest, more support is needed to turn the interest into realization. “Thus, my twin brother Kane and I came up with the idea of free online STEM tutoring to provide students with flexible long-term educational support,” Ian said. Seniors at Del Norte High School, the Xu brothers have been 4S Ranch residents for seven years. “We’ve had the privilege to receive a high-quality education and were surrounded with

academically hard-working peers,” they shared. “We were also blessed with a strong leadership team which includes two others: Vivian Chung and Kevin Wang. Using connections we had within our community, we recruited a team of over 20 high school tutors from all over San Diego County.” As co-presidents of Project Art of Learning, Kane and Ian are responsible for finding underserved clients, securing partnerships, recruiting and training their tutors, developing personalized curricula, publicizing their efforts, and managing quality of services. They also tutor their own students. Then came COVID-19. Since their services were already online, Project Art of Learning could operate normally, but Kane and Ian realized that many students needed these services more than ever. “In order to reach out to more students during the outset of the pandemic,” Kane shared, “I remember cold-emailing and calling other educational organizations and institutions for weeks

What’s New at Project Art of Learning? We are currently working with Advancing Students Forward (ASF) to provide continued online education for students in Tijuana. without a single reply. I nevertheless persisted, and eventually was fortunate enough to get a reply from the International Rescue Committee (IRC). I was personally able to tutor three refugee students through this partnership. This taught me a lot about persistence and grit, which I found is vital in running a nonprofit organization.” So far, Project Art of Learning has served more than 40 students, holding more than 400 individual tutoring sessions and tutoring for over 250 hours. “Our biggest accomplishment is getting to know our kids not only as a student, but as a person, and building a positive relationship to foster an enjoyable learning environment.” ¢

H

awaiian Fresh Seafood, Inc. is a top seafood distributor and market that offers fresh seafood products to more than 2,000 customers, including top chefs across the country. Hawaiian Fresh Seafood owns and operates a fleet of three longline tuna fishing vessels that supply their wholesale division, as well as their market. This allows Frank Porcelli, owner of Hawaiian Fresh Seafood, and his team to oversee and control the entire process from start to finish. “Our customers appreciate this because they know where their seafood is coming from. Traceability is so important these days,” explained Porcelli. Customers who enter the Hawaiian Fresh Seafood market will see display cases filled with a variety of fresh fish fillets and loins, as well as an assortment of freshly made poke. According to Porcelli, customers can purchase poke by the pound or in a poke bowl with either brown or white rice. “We’re especially known for our fresh ahi,” revealed Porcelli. Porcelli originally opened Hawaiian Fresh Seafood in Honolulu in 2006. A Poway High School graduate, he has deep roots in the local community, as well as in Hawaii. “I grew up in Poway and enlisted in the Navy right out of high school. I was on the USS Midway CV-41 during the Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm). I moved to Hawaii in 2002, and a few years later, I started Hawaiian Fresh Seafood,” said Porcelli. When he relocated his business to San Diego in 2019, it was important to him to keep the name Hawaiian Fresh Seafood for two reasons: the established reputation and keeping the `uhane, or “spirit of Hawaii,” at the heart of the business. “Although we’re new to the seafood scene in San Diego County, we’re not new to the industry. We’ve been building our brand since 2006, and the Hawaiian Fresh “Our customers Seafood name has become synonymous with fresh, quality appreciate this seafood,” shared Porcelli, who lives once again in Poway. because they know As a small, family-owned company, Porcelli is involved in all aspects of the business and even puts on where their seafood his boots every day to work side-by-side with his crew. is coming from.” Each order is hand-cut and chosen for each individual order with the customer’s needs in mind. A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with PREMIER COMPETITIVE YOUTH SOCCER Boys & Girls born in years 2003 -13

As we navigate through uncertain times, one thing is for sure, SD Force FC celebrated another momentous season with the crowning of many championships in the many leagues the club participates in. In the San Diego sector, several teams triumphed in the Presidio Soccer League and in the San Diego Developmental Academy League. Congratulations to the Presidio & SDDA League Champions: Jean-Michel Leuregans- B2009, Dave Currie- B2008, Carlos Huerta- B2006, Erik Ocampo- G2006, Tory Henry- G2008, Jerome Gilson- B2006 (SDDA) While most of the club teams participate in the San Diego County under Presidio and SDDA, some of the club's top teams also compete in the Southern California Developmental League (SCDSL) which competes against Los Angeles and Orange County clubs. Brilliant job representing the club outside of San Diego with the SCDSL championships: Scott Gold- B2007, Scott Gold- B2005, Jen Schultz- G2003, Jose Ocampo- G2007 (semifinalist of California Regional League) On the heels of the club being selected to represent one of the few San Diego clubs that will participate in the Development Player League this season, the G2007 J. Ocampo's performance was a reflection of a well-deserved acknowledgement of the SD Force FC girls program. Even though being the best of the best is the ultimate reward when competing, Erik's G2009 team demonstrated high levels of commitment and perseverance to become finalists in Cal South's Presidents Cup. With a reduced roster, the players fought tooth and nail for every play which demonstrated enough to be second best in Southern California. Brilliant job ladies! Another team whose season was cut short by COVID 19 while pursuing Cal South’s National Cup Championship was the G2006 J. Ocampo team. The team only allowed 2 goals and scored 11 goals heading into the semi-final game. Very close ladies!

Volunteering Voice KAVITA AGARWAL SUPPORTS CHILDREN IN THE FOSTER SYSTEM by KELLEY GUSICH

K

avita Agarwal and her family have lived in Rancho Peñasquitos for 15 years. She is married to Sanjay Agarwal, and her son Aman is 26 years old. Kavita is currently the Director of Investor Administration at MG Properties Group in Sorrento Valley, but now that her son is grown and living in Seattle, she has found more opportunity to volunteer. After seeing an emotional video about a foster child and a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) through the organization that sponsored it – Voices for Children – Kavita decided to sign up. As a CASA, Kavita has a role to listen, observe, and advocate for her assigned foster child’s needs, working alongside the social worker, attorneys, therapists, and the child’s school. “I visit with my case child at least once a month, which helps in connecting with and understanding him or her,” she explained. “I look into any issues

the child has in their schooling, if there are any unmet medical or therapeutic needs, or if there is any gap in communication between the child and his or her caregivers.” Her first case child was an 11-year-old girl, who warmed Kavita’s heart when she said she felt she could always call on Kavita. “The biggest accomplishments of my last few years advocating for foster kids was the joy of seeing my first case child, a girl, reunited with her biological mom who was clean after many months of rehab, and the second case child (who was a teenage girl) reunited with her dad,” Kavita said. “Although I am no longer the CASA for these two girls, I am still in touch with both of them.” The pandemic has taken its toll on children in foster care, and they’re feeling more alone and helpless at this time. The 12-year-old child Kavita is currently working with can’t leave her group home for activities or visits, and can

Voices for Children is always looking for volunteers who are motivated to help the community and give back by volunteering time with children in foster care. Kavita recommends checking out the VFC website for more information. “As a consistent presence in the child’s life, the CASA ensures there is someone a foster child can rely on, and someone who will be by the child’s side during a scary and difficult time in their life,” Kavita concluded. “Through this unique volunteer opportunity, Voices for Children provides the training, framework, guidance, and funding that allows people in the community a way to give back and make a tangible impact for a child!” ¢

What Skills Will Students Need in a Rapidly Changing World?

by DR. BOB OGLE, Head of School, Pacific Ridge School

T

he rapid evolution of technology, as well as the current pandemic, are having a significant impact on our children’s futures – their adult lives will look very different than our lives last year. Educating young people for this fluid, unknown future needs to combine proven, traditional methods with new, innovative approaches. The best environments are those in which curious students learn how to ask the right questions, discuss and design solutions to complex problems, take thoughtful

risks, and grow by experiencing success and failure. They become adaptable and learn to excel through challenge. For parents, investing early in an enriched, forward-looking education can pay tremendous dividends for their children’s success and satisfaction in life. At Carlsbad’s Pacific Ridge School, students in grades 7-12 engage actively with academic subjects while gaining relevant, hands-on practice in essential skills for thriving in unpredictability. The Harkness table an oval table at which 15 students sit alongside their teacher, is the center of academic life at Pacific Ridge. Students share ideas and perspectives, strengthening their speaking, listening, critical thinking skills, and confidence. Academic content is frequently integrated across disciplines to add depth and context to learning, and the new Innovation Center and Library,

due to open in January 2021, will bring students together for collaboration, advanced research, and hands-on work, both technical and creative. In Pacific Ridge’s year-long service learning program, students develop empathy, leadership, and project management expertise addressing needs as diverse as ocean pollution, elder care, and girls’ education in India. Outside of pandemic conditions, the annual

global travel program sends over 90% of students around the world for cultural immersion, service, and study. Pacific Ridge invites you to explore what makes the school special and empowers students to enact positive change in the world by scheduling a personalized virtual tour. COMMUNITY STUFF

Paws to Read

Local Student Excels in Biology Competition

4 Paws of Love, a local pet therapy nonprofit, continues bringing joy to the community despite pandemic restrictions. Robin Kaufman founded 4 Paws of Love two years ago as a unique all-poodle organization. Because poodles shed less than most dog breeds, they’re less likely to affect people with allergies. In more usual times, trained 4 Paws of Love teams – one poodle and one human – visit hospitals, rehabilitation and assisted living facilities, schools, and service groups across San Diego for pet therapy, de-stressing, and educational presentations. Library visits where children read to the poodles are one of their most popular programs. Since COVID-19 restrictions began this spring, in-person visits have been suspended. Like many of us, 4 Paws of Love has gone virtual to continue making an impact. The group takes videos of teams reading out loud and posts them on Facebook for children to watch. Multiple poodle members have participated in the videos, including poodles who don’t usually visit the library. See the videos and learn more at www.facebook.com/4pawsoflovetherapy or www.4pawsoflove.org.

Del Norte High School student Yajat Yadav was named a 2020 USA Biolympiad (USABO) Silver Medalist in the 18th Annual USABO National Finals held by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) over the summer. Nearly 10,000 students from 500 schools, 43 states, and 11 International Schools registered in the nationwide high school competition. During the 10 days of the National Finals, students participated in intensive theoretical and practical tutorials, and studied with leading scientists who are experts in the fields of cellular and molecular biology, plant anatomy and physiology, animal anatomy and physiology, genetics and evolution, ecology, ethology, and biosystematics. “CEE is so proud of these students who worked so hard to compete at the 2020 USABO National Finals,” said Joann DiGennaro, CEE President. Learn more about CEE and the USA Biolympiad at www.usabo-trc.org.

San Diego’s Virtual Oasis Local nonprofit San Diego Oasis will be donating 300 tablets to older adults throughout the region, so they can use the devices to stay connected with friends, family, and community during these challenging times. San Diego Oasis hosts workshops and classes for older adults, and since this spring has been providing these services virtually. “The pandemic has moved San Diego Oasis to a ‘senior center without walls’ where our members can attend classes from the comfort and safety of their homes as they are one of the most vulnerable populations affected by the virus,” said Simona Valanciute, President and CEO. “But for those who don’t have tech capabilities to tune into our virtual classes, the donated devices provide an opportunity for our organization to reach and engage with them, expanding our reach to an even broader audience, and allows us to support more older adults in need.” The donation was funded by the Gary and Mary West Foundation, North County COVID-19 Response Fund, San Diego Foundation, and SDG&E. Learn more at www.sandiegooasis.org.

National Merit Scholarship Winners Sixteen students from Canyon Crest Academy, eight from Del Norte High School, eight from Westview High School, seven from Torrey Pines High School, six from Scripps Ranch High School, two from Rancho Bernardo High School, and one from Mt. Carmel High School were named 2020 National Merit Scholars. These distinguished high school graduates are among 7,600 National Merit Scholarship recipients nationwide, all of whom will receive scholarships for undergraduate study worth a total of over $30 million. This year’s competition began with a pool of over 1.5 million entrants from 21,000 high schools across the country. In September 2019, approximately 16,000 were named semifinalists on a staterepresentational basis. From that group, roughly 15,000 attained finalist standing, and about half of those finalists were chosen to receive National Merit Scholarships this year. Learn more at www.nationalmerit.org.

Local Author Publishes Picture Books Cartoonist and illustrator Deana Sobel Lederman, who lives in Carmel Valley, has published her debut picture books, a series of three stories for children about the COVID-19 pandemic called Rainbows, Masks, and Ice Cream. “I was looking for a way to address the pandemic in a gentle way that kids could understand,” she said. “The books were also very therapeutic to write because they allowed me to express my feelings about what was going on and find hope.” The series, which consists of Noah Henry: A Rainbow Story, The Sewing Lesson, and Masks!, is published by TBR Books, part of the nonprofit Center for the Advancement of Languages, Education, and Communities (CALEC). All three books have been translated into multiple languages, including Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Arabic, and possibly others in the future. The books are available for purchase at www.tbr-books.org or online at major retailers.

r. Jodi McGrady opened McGrady Dental Group with one goal: taking care of families. “I love working with kids and helping to introduce them to dentistry without fear,” Dr. McGrady explained. “By offering services for the entire family, kids don’t have to age out of our practice, and busy moms can get their teeth cleaned at the same time as the kids.” She has always had an interest in comprehensive, community-minded dentistry. After receiving her first dental degree at University of Pittsburgh, she studied hospital dentistry and trained to treat children with special needs at University of Iowa, and received a master’s degree in dental public health. She and her husband, periodontist Dr. Michael Spilotro, practiced together in Santa Fe, NM, for 10 years before relocating to San Diego. Dr. McGrady continued studying pediatric dentistry at University of California, Los Angeles

and Rady Children’s Hospital, completing her pediatric residency in 2011. She remains involved with the hospital. “I’m currently the Chief of Dental Services at Rady Children’s Hospital,” she explained. “This gives us one more option for kids with health concerns or extensive treatment needs to be treated in a safe environment.” Providing safe, high-quality treatment and serving the community is a family affair at McGrady Dental Group. Dr. McGrady lives locally with her husband and three teenagers. Her husband works in the office two days a month, and two of her children join Dr. McGrady on trips to Ensenada, Mexico, volunteering with 1000 Smiles – which they hope to resume soon. “I enjoy the relationships you build in pediatrics and family dentistry,” Dr. McGrady concluded. “You truly watch kids grow up and get to share in their joys and successes.” ¢

Pandemic Palz

ISHA PASUMARTHI AND VARSHA MATHEW HELP THE COMMUNITY SPEND TIME TOGETHER by KELLEY GUSICH

B

est friends since second grade at Chaparral Elementary, Isha Pasumarthi and Varsha Mathew managed to stay close friends despite attending different high schools and universities. Then came the pandemic. “Both of us have always had an interest in contributing to furthering community togetherness,” Isha said. Though Varsha continued on through Rancho Bernardo High School, with Isha graduating from Del Norte, they still maintained a strong friendship. They volunteered together at the Rancho Bernardo Public Library and played in the New Youth Orchestra in Sorrento Valley. They both graduated high school in 2019, with Isha attending Nova Southeastern University while Varsha stayed more local at University of California San Diego. Imagine their surprise when in March this year they had to pack everything up at college with a moment’s notice and move back home. For millions of college students, within 14 days, the comfortable atmosphere of kicking back on campus and

having hearty conversations with friends was reduced to awkward small talk over Zoom. “We co-founded Pandemic Palz in April in an effort to help community members make new connections even in the circumstances we are in now,” Varsha confirmed. “The mission is to connect members of our community with one another in the light of self-isolation.” They are doing this through a return to the timeless art of letter writing. At the moment, Pandemic Palz is working on two projects: making a pen pal and writing a letter of appreciation to a healthcare worker. To become a Pandemic Pal, sign up (with parents) on the website. Share a few fun facts about yourself, and you’ll be connected with another student who might be in the same grade, but who attends a different school. Anyone of any age can write a letter of appreciation to a healthcare worker. Send your letter to pandemicpalz@gmail.com and it’ll be passed on to a local hospital.

“Pandemic Palz has been a joy to found and run,’’ confirmed Isha and Varsha. “It has been an exciting whirlwind of developing a viable program that would have an actual positive impact on kids in our community,

“The mission is to connect members of our community with one another in the light of self-isolation.” reaching out to school administrators and informing them about our program, and reaching out to members of our community.” They continued, “Through this whole process, we’ve also been able to connect with each other and members of the community in a way that was never possible before the pandemic, so we’re really thankful to have this opportunity to give back.” ¢

Fannie and Freddie Stick It to Homeowners by SCOTT VOAK

I

f you own your home, about the only good thing about this year is that interest rates are falling far enough that you were going to be able to knock a chunk off your fat mortgage payment. Well, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac decided they want to take a cut from all these re-finances. The reason given is that they are taking on more risk during the pandemic. But a re-fi actually lowers the risk (as long as the borrower isn’t taking out more money) by reducing the monthly payment, which lowers the stress on families and the risk they would not be able to make payments. Additionally, though COVID-19 is causing some losses in the lending market, Fannie and Freddie were both profitable in the most recent quarter and furthermore are subsidized by the U.S. government – your taxes. So, while it’s still a good idea to look at a re-fi, it’s going to cost you a bit more money than it should, allowing Fannie and Freddie to line their pockets at your expense. ¢
