The Big 4-0
F
Derrick Breaux Publisher
or as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be older. When I was a child, I wanted to be a teenager. When I was a teenager, I wanted to be an adult. In college, I couldn’t wait to start my career. At nineteen, like most people, I just wanted to reach the legal drinking age. As each year passed, I felt like I was inching closer and closer to something – perhaps some type of goal or milestone? After all, these markers tend to be big deals in all of our lives. We often see them as the ‘end’ of distinct categories. The end of our teenage years... The end of high school... The end of college... The end of our twenties... I’ll take it even further. Have I simply been on course to reach middle age? Goodness, did I really just say that? After spending a few minutes on Google, I’ve concluded that most people classify middle age as 45 to 65 years of age. Apparently this is a relatively new frame of mind because until recently, it was generally thought that 40 to 60 years made up the bracket’s classification. I assume that it wouldn’t be difficult to figure out what age group initiated the sudden five year shift. Turning the big 4-0 was actually a pretty cool experience. My adorable wife worked hard to put together an incredible 40th birthday party. I was humbled by the whole experience – surrounded by dear friends, family members, acquaintances and colleagues spanning multiple decades of memories. The most common question that people have been asking me is how it felt turning 40. The honest truth is that it’s great. For the first time that I can remember, I feel like I am actually at the beginning of something. I’m motivated and inspired. I’m right where I want to be – at the exact age that I want to be at. Truth be told, throughout my thirties I often thought of reaching forty. I’m there and it’s going to be a fantastic decade! I’m no longer looking too far into the future. In fact, I’m doing just the opposite. Spending time with my family and enjoying watching my kids grow into their pre-teen years and young adulthood is an amazing thing. If only there was a way that I could convince them that there is no rush to get older and move into the next category of their lives – but that’s a topic for a different publisher’s note. Oh, and by the way, I subscribe to the new way of thinking – the one that says middle age is classified as 45 to 65 years old. A special thank you to Google for clarifying that and giving me a five year cushion. Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

A Side Not Often Seen RB Resident Derek Slevin Brings Awareness Through Photographs
T
he Senior Community Centers will host a photography exhibit and reception on April 3 at Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier, to raise funds for its programs assisting low-income and homeless seniors in San Diego. The photos are by Rancho Bernardo resident and award-winning photographer Derek Slevin, and depict the struggles of homeless people, called photos by Derek Slevin “Experience of a Lifetime.” The portraits are from Slevin’s upcoming book, “Portraits of the Forgotten”, and are receiving critical acclaim. “I teamed up with published writer Hannah Cohen, a woman who has worked with the homeless for over twenty years; she gets it,” said Derek, “Hannah has a keen understanding of the challenges and despair homeless people experience.” Derek took up photography after the death of his father to cope with his loss, but put it aside to pursue a degree in Photo by Jon Campbell business. After rediscovering his passion for the camera, he honed his art through self-teaching. While he continues to grow his image base and share his work, he has aligned himself with charitable organizations, including Senior Community Centers. Derek stated, “Senior Community Centers understands the needs of this population and, through its Homeless Prevention Program, has taken more than 1,000 homeless seniors from the streets to permanent housing with an astounding 90% success rate.” When he isn’t out and about with his camera, Derek appreciates the Rancho Bernardo Inn, where he can “unwind,” and enjoys eateries such as The French Market. :::: STUDENT STAR
This Girl Gets a Kick Out of Taekwondo by BILL STEWART | photos by Spark Photography
T
o be recognized as a world champion in any sport is impressive, but to accomplish it at age 9 is amazing. For Olivia Palombo, fifth grader at Creekside Elementary School, it represents achievement of a level of excellence not usually associated with one so young. This well-rounded young lady from Sabre Springs has many interests. She has played a lead role in a Creekside musical, is first-chair violinist in the fifth grade orchestra, participates in the school's science fair, sings with the children's choir at Saint Michael's Catholic Church, and has performed advanced level ballet at the Royal Academy of Dance. Plus, she's earned a second-degree black belt in taekwondo.
Taekwondo: An Olympic Martial Art
Her real passion since the age of 5 has been taekwondo – a martial art that blends precisely orchestrated movements with a healthy interest in self-defense or combat. Taekwondo is Korean for "way of the fist and foot." It requires strength, speed, balance, flexibility and stamina. Along with Judo, it's one of only two Asian martial arts in the Olympic Games.

Pursuing her goals, Olivia won her first California state championships in two American Taekwondo Association (ATA) categories of competition at age 7, and the following year won state championships in seven ATA events. That was when she began competing in world championships, claiming bronze or silver medals in five categories. Then in 2013, she became a world champion, winning the gold medal in the ATA Taekwondo "Traditional Forms" competition for girls 9 to 11 years old, and also winning silver medals in three other ATA world events. Looking ahead, the sky's the limit for Olivia, and not just in taekwondo. She thinks an aerospace engineering career designing airplanes and spacecraft could be her life's calling, although fashion design, acting, or the entertainment industry also have appeal – and she wants to marry and have children, "especially a daughter," she said. ¢

Home Run!
RB Girls Softball is Growing Strong
A
Rancho Bernardo tradition since 1970, RB Girls Softball has only been growing stronger ever since. The Opening Day of the new season is happening on March 1 at Rancho Bernardo Community Park, and the RB Girls Softball league is seeking to top their 2013 record. Last season, their 8U, 12U and 14U All Star Teams were able to compete in the State Tournament, a first for the league. RB Girls Softball is also looking forward to taking advantage of major improvements at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. In 2013, a new roof was installed on the snack bar, and this season new fences are being installed on all the fields and lights installed on another softball field to allow more playing time. The goals at Rancho Bernardo Girls Softball are P.L.A.Y. – Positive coaching, Love of the game, All players valued, and Youths having fun. The league also provides a plethora of motivational material for their coaches. Keeping with the tradition of abbreviations, they have sayings such as “ROOTS” (respect for Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, and one’s Self) and the “ELM Tree of Mastery” (Effort, Learning, and bouncing back from Mistakes). You can also find the entire history of the league on their website at www.rbgirlssoftball.org.
But all of the material available is meaningless without players, and luckily, RB Girls Softball will never have to worry about that. Wade Wendell, President of the RB Girls Softball League, said, “The most exciting thing to me this year is seeing the new families and board members stepping up. We had a big turnover of board members, and the new board members have jumped in and made a big impact already.” As the season begins, they will begin cultivating players for their All Star Teams this year, hoping to send more teams to the State Tournament. ¢

n January, the Rancho Bernardo community gathered together for a charitable 5K run/walk at Lake Hodges for a very special need – the Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) Library. If you didn’t know, RBHS is one of the few schools in the Poway Unified School District that has a “Friends of the Library” organization, a group devoted to raising funds and improving the high school’s library for their students. The Friends of RBHS Library organized this run/walk to raise money for purchasing new books, improving the technology, and overall, providing a positive place for RBHS students to study, collaborate, and learn. ¢

o refer to Nick Anastasopoulos as merely this month’s “Face in the Crowd” is an understatement, because his face is well-known and respected throughout the whole 92128 area. As the co-owner, alongside his wife Vickie, of the Athens Market Café in Carmel Mountain Ranch for the past twenty years, Nick not only regularly opens up the restaurant’s facilities for local non-profit organization meetings, but he also frequently donates thousands of dollars’ worth of gift certificates toward their charitable events. A Rancho Bernardo resident, Nick generously involves himself in many local causes. “My main activities revolve around community volunteer projects. It is rewarding to know that I am making a positive difference for so many people and getting things accomplished that will be a part of the community for generations to come,” Nick expressed. Nick is in the Community Association of Bernardo Heights, and is a member of the Masters Hill Association. In addition, he is active with the San Diego North Character Counts Coalition Foundation, which provides financing to implement the Character Counts Ethics Program into the Poway Unified School District. Nick acknowledged, “I am fortunate to have the time during the day to interact with other volunteers to help our great community.” If you really want to interact with Nick, you can usually find him at his restaurant. He proclaimed, “It is my favorite hangout. Though I’m a Greek who was born and raised in New York City, my wife was born and raised in Greece, and she brings with her the wonderful old world recipes that our customers have come to love and enjoy.” He cites travel and golf as favorite hobbies, and emphasized that, “spending time with my grandchildren makes me the happiest!” ¢

The Zeilers of Rancho Bernardo “Never Quit” by LYDIA COBB | photos by Tyler McElhaney
T
he Zeilers love to walk, but maybe that's an understatement. Perhaps you’ve seen them charging up Battle Mountain in Rancho Bernardo. “We love that climb and the view is beautiful from the top,” described Sarah Zeiler. An active family (Rick Zeiler is a former golf pro), the Zeiler family motto is “Never Quit.” Their children, Ellie Jane, age 9, and 8-year-old twins, Benjamin Sidney and William Richard, are involved in sports and the arts at Chaparral Elementary. They moved from 4S Ranch five years ago to The Trails in Rancho Bernardo, where they appreciate the trees and the joy of neighbors they adore. Years ago they met in a bar during Sarah's business trip to New York City, but that’s no surprise. Rick was marketing director, and Sarah PR director, for the New York-based company that created Grey Goose vodka and built Jagermeister domestically. They married in 2001. With combined expertise in consumer goods promotions, they started their own company a year and a half ago. “We set out to create a new shot brand with a lot of our friends and colleagues from the music and action sports industries,” mentioned Sarah. They created a blend of aged whiskey, herbs and spices from around the world, yet with half the sugar of competing brands. In other words, a smooth “back of the bar” blend. In 2013, COLDCOCK American Herbal Whiskey was launched and is fast-growing. The kids are growing up too. Ellie plays basketball, performs in musicals, practices guitar and has an “incredible golf swing” according to Mom. Ben and Will both play basketball and wrestle on the Poway Slammers team. Each Zeiler sibling is independent in his and her own ways. “We’ve always tried to treat the twins as two unique people and they definitely want that,” shared Sarah. The Zeilers are active in the community, supporting the Chabad of Poway where their children attended preschool and Hebrew school. The kids practice golf at Oaks North Golf Course in the junior program. As a family, they also mountain bike, and ski and snowboard in Mammoth. Rick and Sarah have also begun to practice yoga. “Our marriage and family comes first. Our health and time together matters most,” shared Sarah. Perhaps that’s why it’s touching to her that they often all share one bathroom. They remind themselves that it won’t be long before the kids are more independent, so they cherish the closeness, and all its five toothbrushes. ¢ Parents: Rick and Sarah Zeiler Children: Ellie Jane Zeiler (9) 4th grade Chaparral Elementary; Twins – William Richard Zeiler (8) and Benjamin Sidney Zeiler (8), both 2nd graders at Chaparral Community: The Trails in Rancho Bernardo Hometown: Rick – Ridgecrest, CA; Sarah – Chicago, IL Profession: Founders and Creators of COLDCOCK American Herbal Whiskey Pets: Teddy the baby Labradoodle (RIP Puffin the Chihuahua Summer 2013)

They are searching for past winners of the RB Chorale Scholarship for the purpose of inviting as many as possible to be their guest and attend either performance. Former winners will be honored during the evening, which will also feature the 2014 finalists. All awardees, past and present, are graduating seniors from San Diego County selected through auditions. For over forty years, the Chorale has awarded close to a quarter of a million dollars to graduating seniors. They anticipate awarding an additional $10,000, to be divided between the six 2014 finalists in June. Rancho Bernardo resident Tony Teravainen received a county proclamation on the deck of the USS Midway on behalf of his nonprofit, Support The Enlisted Project (STEP). Tony serves as the chair for the organization. STEP serves as a local resource for supporting lower ranking military enlisted and recently honorably discharged veteran families during unexpected financial hardships. “It feels good to know that an organization that I have committed so many hours to through the years is not only making a personal difference in military and veteran families’ lives, but also being recognized for its outstanding contribution to the community,” said Tony.
San Diego Women’s Week kicks off at the end of March. Here are just a sample of the special guests that will be making appearances at this year’s event. On Monday, Hannah Nancarrow, daughter of late newscaster Loren Nancarrow, and Tina Mickelson, sister of famed professional golfer Phil Mickelson, will be lecturing alongside Mimi Kirk, a woman with a colorful history of experiences and careers to share. The Thursday speakers feature: Kim Coles, an actress known for her role on “Living Single”; Elizabeth Smart, who shares her journey from abduction to empowerment; and Piper Kerman, the real-life inspiration behind the popular Netflix show “Orange is the New Black”, For the complete list visit www.sdwomensweek.com/speakers.
Local Police Get Equipped with AEDs
San Diego City Councilman Mark Kersey announced that he will fund the placement of five Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at the San Diego Police Department’s (SDPD) Northeastern Division. Councilman Kersey also committed to funding five AEDs each year until every police vehicle and patrol car in the division is equipped with an AED. This would make it the first SDPD division to be fully equipped with this life-saving technology. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, so it makes sense to have our first responders, like police officers, equipped with a tool that is proven to save lives,” said Councilman Kersey.

RB Community Park Gets a Facelift
World Affairs Council Honors Members
The Rancho Bernardo Community Park is undergoing some exciting renovations. The sports field and soccer field are getting lighting upgrades, as well as four new light poles being installed, and new fixtures for the existing lamps. ADA accessible upgrades will be included in the parking lot, comfort station, drinking fountain, and backstop along the connecting paths of travel. The basketball court will be resurfaced, a maintenance project that must be performed every five to ten years. The scope of work involves filling cracks and resurfacing with new paint and stripes, and should last for five or more years.
Local USTA Team Wins Big
The women’s USTA tennis team from Rancho Bernardo Community Tennis Center has achieved champion status, topping the board over 691 teams in Southern California. USTA League Coordinator, Lesley Waite, stated that no San Diego team (men or women) had won a San Diego Sectional Tournament in several years and that this was a huge accomplishment. Team members include Captain Laurie Hopps, Avril Varga, Michelle May, Lori Guiglielmetti, Sarah Miller, Chris Teofilo, Jean Davis, Kirsi Kiviniemi, Gail Knapp, Kay Pfeiffer, and Patty Smith.
The Remington Club recently hosted a World Affairs Council membership appreciation reception, following a lecture by member Dr. Bulent Yoldas. The World Affairs Council is a national organization with chapters in Central San Diego and North County. Speakers from outside the membership include diplomats, consular staff and academics. The organization joins forces with other groups such as the United Nations Organization and the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice. Individuals interested in international relations and current events are invited to attend the weekly meetings. Call Bob Felt at 858-592-6087 for more information.

The transition from childhood to adolescence is often considered one of the most influential and challenging experiences in the development of young men and women. In Rancho Bernardo, we depend on the dedicated work of a group of extraordinary members in our community to not only assist in this transition, but also help mold our young citizens into mature, well-rounded individuals. This pivotal time in students’ lives is spent at 92128’s Bernardo Heights Middle School (BHMS). BHMS Principal Tim Biland helps give perspective into the lives of both students and staff in the thick of the educational “sandwich” that is junior high. And you better be paying attention to this required reading, as there will be a quiz at the end.

Q&A
with Tim Biland, Bernardo Heights Middle School Principal
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AS PRINCIPAL OF BERNARDO HEIGHTS MIDDLE SCHOOL (BHMS)? As principal, my role is to support the needs of everyone: the safety, learning, and engagement needs of the students, the learning, collaboration, and instructional needs of the teachers, and the involvement and sense of security and confidence of the parents that the school is preparing their children for future academic and career demands.
WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO THE STUDENTS ON CAMPUS? Students have a right to a clean, welcoming campus where they feel respected, are provided support and guidance, and can expect to be treated fairly by peers and adults. One of the most significant ways we demonstrate to students that we respect them is to offer them an education with high expectations and relevance; this necessitates that all staff are provided the resources they need to plan and facilitate these kinds of experiences.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT BEING PRINCIPAL? THE MOST CHALLENGING? The most rewarding part about my job is that I get to be present where so
active ingredient in the culture; what is acceptable and appropriate behavior. Because they are middle school age, some students experiment with namecalling, profanity, or other challenging behaviors. The vast majority of students never act this way, but until they learn that they have a right to disapprove of such behavior, the culture of the school is challenged. Eventually, they learn this and practice the skills needed to withstand and detour this behavior.
WHAT GOALS HAVE YOU ACCOMPLISHED AS PRINCIPAL? WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH? Becoming part of the school community has been the greatest accomplishment for me as a principal because the relationship foundation is so vital to do difficult work and have critical conversations about what is best for kids. BHMS is a school with a legacy of successful engagement and learning. My goal is to foster innovation and leadership needed to respond to the career and college readiness demands of today and tomorrow.

Choir, Band, and our B-Boys Hip-Hop Dance Club provide the entertainment; Art Club students provide the decoration; our 6th through 8th grade top runners compete for the trophy recognizing top boy and top girl. An Act of Merit
92128 Resident Rewarded for Heroism
R
ancho Bernardo resident and Venturing Scout Tim Higgins received the Boy Scout Meritorious Action Award (Medal of Merit) for saving a woman’s life during a People First meeting. Congressman Scott Peters presented the award to Higgins this past December. Tim was attending the meeting for People First, which helps those with developmental disabilities self-advocate, when he saw the woman turning blue from choking on a sandwich. He performed the Heimlich maneuver on her while she was sitting in her scooter, clearing her airway. He also directed the others in the room to call 911 and then talked to the dispatcher while assisting the woman until the first responders arrived to take her to the hospital. The Boy Scouts Medal of Merit may be awarded to a youth member or adult leader who has performed some outstanding act of service of a rare or exceptional character that reflects an uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of others. Well known for being an outstanding student and citizen, this is not Tim’s first public acknowledgement. In 2012, he was one of two students chosen to serve on the California Department of Education’s Advisory Commission on Special Education (ACSE), a group authorized by Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). He is in the second year of the two-year appointment that requires he review local programs and attend four to six meetings a year. In the short two years he was at the Winston School, he became a standout student, co-winning the Winston School’s Headmaster’s Award at his class graduation ceremonies last spring. The Headmaster’s Award is the highest honor given each year to the upper school student who best exemplifies the values of the Winston School. He just enrolled at Radford University to earn his EMT certificate, so that he can continue as a volunteer for the Salem Rescue Squad. ¢

A Sport with No Sweat Academic League: RB’s Greatest Minds!
“H
is palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy.” Eminem may not have been referring to emotions during an Academic League match, but he certainly captures pre-game jitters. What is Academic League? It is essentially “Team Jeopardy”, and there are many elements that make it similar to a physical sport. The adrenaline rush after smashing the buzzer to answer. Spectators to entertain. Rivals to crush. Each team hails from different schools around the Poway Unified School District (PUSD). There are three levels: freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity. After extensive practice, five players are selected to “start,” but all participants are armed with an arsenal of knowledge. Throughout the years, RBHS has won League and Inland Division Championships. We have earned shiny medals, trophies, and plaques (Ms. Mich: we’ll bring you more!). But what I am most proud of is how each year, Academic League teammates always become the greatest friends – working together cohesively to defeat another squad. I really could not ask for a better team. They welcomed me with open arms when I walked on campus three years ago. We have exchanged Jane Eyre jokes and Benedict Arnold accusations. We have shared moments of solemnity during our (infrequent) losses.
Most importantly, we have been resilient, bouncing back after troubled times and putting our differences aside to show the other team what we are worth. Now, I see that fighting spirit in the eager eyes of the freshmen. Before one of our Thursday matches, I was standing next to these Academic League young blood. A few of them had brought stacks of notecards. Was this last-minute preparations for their Honors English exam? I wondered. Not at all: the notecards were inscribed with famous novels and authors. They were quizzing each other and shouting answers, even in the few minutes before the games formally begun. They didn’t know it at the time, but I couldn’t stop smiling. As the end of the school year approaches, I will soon bid my Academic League career adieu. But I know I leave the team in good hands because of the pure grit and commitment I see in these freshmen. The glory days of RBHS Academic League will continue, and I hope that there will be a whole pack of Broncos to cheer them on as they buzz their way to victory. ¢ Susan Shen is a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School. SPRINGTIME WONDERLAND Blooms Abound at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad
D
by JESSICA WOODS
id you know that ranunculus is Latin for “little frog”? You can “leap” into the new spring by visiting the largest collection of ranunculus flowers in San Diego: The Flower Fields at Carlsbad, a place that is very near and dear to the hearts of many San Diegans. March 1 marks the reopening of the fields, with a rolling hill of ranunculus blooms in every vibrant color you can imagine. There’s even a side that was arranged in red, white, and blue in the shape of the American flag. The time to see these blossoms is now, as the fields will only be open until Mother’s Day on May 11, wherein the flowers will be harvested for sale. There’s so much to do at the fields! Enjoy an antique tractor and wagon ride through the fields, or peruse the works of art made entirely of flowers in the Artist Gardens. The Sweet Pea Maze is a family delight, and you can take your chances at striking it rich at the Carlsbad Mining Company. Visit www.theflowerfields.com for more information. And to future brides, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad during season is the perfect time for a wedding, with the fields as a backdrop, and a real barn on the property for a truly unique reception. So, hop on over to The Flower Fields today, and get a taste of the famed ranunculus’ beauty.
How Did The Flower Fields Begin? The history of the fields stretches back nearly 100 years. Luther Gage, an early settler in the 1920s, shared a ranunculus farm with Frank Frazee. As the 1950s rolled around, after fires and moving the farm, Frank’s son, Edwin, took up the mantle of his father’s trade, breeding “superior ranunculus bulbs” with a “double” petal structure. Edwin then expanded his farms to Carlsbad, where the flowers could bloom best in the mild climate. By 1993, Edwin retired, and Paul Ecke Jr. looked to create a tourist destination so that the fields could survive financially. Thus, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch was born, where people could not only come and enjoy the blooms at springtime, but also purchase the flowers.
Flower viewing isn’t the only thing you can do at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad! MARCH 30: Kid’s Day – Arts and crafts, face painting, and a visit from Ronald McDonald!

to Protect Wildlife
by TORI MORRISON | Photos by Spark Photography and Project Wildlife Care Center Staff
P
roject Wildlife, a nonprofit organization, serves as the primary resource for animal rehabilitation and conservation education in San Diego County. The organization cares for sick, injured, and abandoned wildlife throughout the County and then ensures that healthy animals are released back to the wild. Educating the public about wildlife interactions is another part of their mission, as they can have a major positive impact on the lives of wild animals.
Sick, Injured or Orphaned The first thing to remember is that wildlife generally view humans as a threat. So even if you are trying to help, too much handling or commotion can lead to undue stress on an animal. Watch to be sure the animal really is sick, injured, or orphaned and then act. When assisting the animal, stay calm. Bring the animal to a licensed rehabilitation center. If you are handling the animal yourself, wear gloves or use a towel and place the animal in a container with air holes.
frequented by coyotes. Also, ensuring trash can lids are tight, not leaving pet food outside and sealing access to garages or crawl spaces will help avoid unwanted wild animal visitors. If these efforts fail to keep wildlife out of your home or backyard, there are also some simple and safe deterrents you can try. These include using chili powder on plants, and installing motion-sensitive lights. Humane wildlife extraction is also an option. Humane exclusion encourages wild animals to leave and not to return without the use of pesticides.
Feeding Animals Avoid feeding wild animals as that teaches them to associate humans with a food source. This act causes wildlife to become too tame and lose their self-protecting fear of people.
Resident Wildlife
If you find an injured or abandoned animal, do not attempt to keep the animal yourself. Its best chance for survival is to get it to a licensed rehab facility like Project Wildlife as soon as possible.
Some wild animals live close to residential areas and may enter yards in search of food or water. Pets should never be left in unattended areas

he sixth of nine children, Nancy Canfield has always been committed to family. To support her children, she became involved in their schools, sports, the PTA and scouts. Currently she is the mother of two children and four step children and the grandmother of five grandchildren. She and her husband even raised their twin grandchildren for four and one-half years while their single mom served in the Navy. In fact, they are proud of their three children who serve in the Navy, and her husband served six years in the Navy as well. Professionally, Nancy earned a business degree, worked in manufacturing operations and human resources for twenty years, wrote stories for Chicken Soup for the Soul and Heart of a Woman, received the San Diego Book Award for authoring Home Kids, the Story of St. Agatha Home for Children and worked in real estate for the last eleven years. She is proud that Real Living Lifestyles, the real estate company she works for, participates in a community service day each year. She exclaimed, “This year we collected 13,417 pounds of food for the 450,000 identified hungry in San Diego County.” When Nancy’s children moved away, she shifted her focus. She explained, “My family has always been my first priority, but the community is my extended family.” Having lived in Westwood since 1985, she began by joining the Homeowner’s Association. She also joined the Rancho Bernardo Chamber of Commerce, became the honorary mayor of Rancho Bernardo for two terms, served on the board of the Rancho Bernardo Business Association, and began volunteering for the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society. As president of the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society, Nancy worked with the other dedicated board members to preserve the history of the region, acquire new programs and exhibits, host events, organize the speaker series for the public and connect with the community. Because of their outstanding work, the Historical Society received the 10News Leadership Award, the Hats Off to Volunteers Award and grants from the Rancho Bernardo Foundation, the County supervisor’s office and the City councilman’s office. Regarding her feelings about community service, Nancy revealed, “It feeds my soul.” In her spare time, Nancy focuses on her family, writes and reads metaphysics, history, science, and mystery books. And true to her nature, for the past eight years she has been growing her hair for Locks of Love. ¢

The Surging 92128 Real Estate Market
E
veryone has been talking about the recent surge in 92128 real estate, and now the numbers support the claim. 2013 was a banner year for sales in 92128 with a large gain over 2012. The under $1M was steady and will continue to be a desirable price point for transplants. What does this mean? Buyer confidence in the value of homes and, of course, the continued low interest rates. Clearly, we know how desirable 92128 is to professionals because of the outstanding schools, proximity to hightech companies, location and lifestyle. Recently, we received an inquiry

With Qualcomm, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed, and several other San Diego companies hiring, the local real estate market should continue to soar. Inventory is very low and, there are still many buyers. Life Through A Camera Lens Rancho Bernardo Residents Featured at MOPA Youth Exhibit Gallery photos by Nicole Espina
“M
y City, Your City” is the Museum of Photographic Arts’ eighth annual Youth Exhibition that encouraged students to use photography and video to explore the themes of home and community. They had nearly 300 students enter their artwork and a jury panel selected the final pieces for the exhibition. The panel of judges included City Council President and Interim Mayor, Todd Gloria, freelance photojournalist, Sam Hodgson, arts educator and Program Coordinator for the Art & Photography Programs at UC San Diego Extension, Annika Nelson, and Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) Executive Director, Deborah Klochko. The final selections were on display at MOPA in Balboa Park through early February. MOPA is grateful for exhibition support provided by Adobe Youth Voices. Of the many finalists, eighteen hailed from the 92128 area: Madeline A., Caylin A., Kasey B., Lauren D., Ali H., Claire H., Melody K., Grace L., Andrea L., Lauren Q., Madhvi S., Shruti S., Claire W., Niharika B., Tracy H., and Stephanie W. of Meadowbrook Middle School, and John C. and Phyllis G. of Poway High School. “I am so impressed each year by the quality, creativity, and

sophistication of the artwork these students create,” said Lori Sokolowski, Student and Teacher Programs Coordinator for MOPA. “There’s a lot of really powerful and personal stories told through these photographs and videos. It takes a lot of courage to share your artwork and have it judged.” The 2014 Youth Exhibition theme deals with family and the deadline to enter artwork is June 15.
