Downsizing…

F

Derrick Breaux Publisher

or the past six years, my family and I have lived in the same house. This might not sound like anything out of the ordinary. In fact, it may sound quite normal. However, after taking out a notepad and spending some time putting the pencil to the paper, I came to the realization of a few things. For starters, this was the 23rd house that I have called home. With all of the moving around you would think that I was raised in a military family, but most of the moves were actually the product of my parents climbing the corporate ladder over the years. After further review, I calculated that this was the longest that I have ever lived in one house. In terms of square footage, it is also the largest house that I have ever called home. Over the years, we have been blessed with a growing family and plenty of visitors – both short-term and long-term. Before my mother passed away in 2010, she had a room at our house. For several years when my brother was touring the world with his rock band, he also had a room to come home to for short stays. Our kids referred to it as Tyler’s room even though he only used it a couple months a year. With our daughter recently moving out (well, sort of) and living in the dorms this year, my wife and I started discussing the possibility of downsizing. We recently pulled the trigger and made the move to my 24th house – a smaller home. Still having our two little kiddos at home, we weren’t brave enough to downsize in number of bedrooms, but we reduced our square footage by nearly 40% with this move. I’m still trying to figure out if reducing our square footage is the same thing as reducing our carbon footprint. Probably not! Preparing for any move can be a daunting task. Preparing for a move to a smaller house was downright overwhelming and consuming. I am amazed at how much “stuff” our family has accumulated over the past decade. We have spent the better part of a month making trips to the Salvation Army and the Goodwill donation centers. I’m on a first name basis with a couple of the kind employees that work there. My wife and I have decided to use this move as a family project – I’ll stop short of calling it a learning experience because that gives it more credit than necessary. The word “purge” has become a common conversational theme with our kids. Although they don’t like parting ways with the toys that they haven’t touched in years – but somehow fall in love with all over again when they find them tucked away in a closet or box – they are somewhat satisfied knowing that the unused toys are being donated, and children that may not have as many toys will get to play with them. We reinforce this with our kids each time we visit the donation centers, and I personally feel a certain sense of “parental” accomplishment in doing so. Even though we aren’t quite finished with our moving and purging at the time that I am writing this, it sure does feel great to know that we are entering into the New Year a lot lighter than before. It feels good to get rid of some excess and simplify things. Happy New Year! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

COMMUNITY INVITED TO SUPPORT VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS AT RBHS photo by Jason Yamane Photography

F

or over 20 years, the Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) Visual and Performing Arts Department (VAPA) has been providing students with opportunities to work with professionals in the field, gain career experience, and create phenomenal artistic works. Join the RBHS students and faculty on Friday, Feb. 27 for the incredible collaborative VAPA Showcase. From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the RBHS campus, the entire community is invited to enjoy performances by the Tour de Force dance team, chamber orchestra, madrigals choir, drama department, and wind ensemble. There will also be art galleries by the digital photography, video production, drawing and painting, studio art, computer graphic art, and screen printing classes. Art demonstrations and activities for the public, classroom tours, and refreshment vendors will round out the night to remember. The school is also planning renovations to the Performing Arts Center, which will be used by all art disciplines including theater, dance, music, and the fine arts. VAPA is excited to be able to expand the possibilities of production and expression for RBHS students. The department is offering the community an opportunity to support the program and facility by honoring a student, teacher, cast, or production with “Buying a Chair.” A permanent plaque will be placed on a seatback in the new facility with the engraved wording of your choice. Each seat plaque is a tax-deductible $500 donation, and the 350 seatbacks available will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more info about the school and its programs visit www.powayusd.com/pusdrbhs. ¢

Inspiration LOCAL MIDDLE SCHOOLER AND WRITER PRANAV PUTTAPARTHI FINDS INSPIRATION IN HIS DAILY LIFE by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Spark Photography

P

ranav Puttaparthi is the first to admit that writing a book is not an easy task. It takes hard work, determination, and the right inspiration. “I love exploring and hiking. While I’m hiking, I come up with ideas for upcoming books,” revealed Pranav, who first became interested in writing a novel after he shared a comic he created with his friends. Pranav’s book, Escape the Dimension, is actually the second book he has written but the first he completed and published. Pranav plans to go back and finish his first book, Conscience, as a prequel to Escape the Dimension and also hopes to write two more books in the series. According to Pranav, starting the writing process is

the most challenging for him, but the end result is worth it. “It’s very difficult to get my thoughts flowing and creating a good, powerful hook. However, after I’ve hooked the reader in, it’s much easier to continue. The most rewarding part was after I finished the book; I felt very accomplished and proud,” related Pranav. When he looks to the future, Pranav would like to work in the computer science industry, earn a Ph.D., and continue his writing career. An avid reader and video game enthusiast, Pranav attends Meadowbrook Middle School. In addition to loving the written word, Pranav also has a passion for numbers. “My favorite subject in school is math. I really enjoy equations and combining them to form other equations,” said Pranav, who is an Honor Roll student and maintains a 4.0 grade point average. Pranav is happy to be a student at Meadowbrook Middle School, stating that the teachers are friendly and the classes are enjoyable. When he is not at school or working on his next novel, Pranav can often be found out and about in Carmel Mountain Ranch. “I really like living here because it’s a small community with great schools, friendly neighbors, shopping, recreation areas, and parks,” stated Pranav, who has lived in the area since he was born. Pranav is also involved in the North South Foundation (NSF), a nonprofit organization whose goal is to provide disadvantaged children living in India with college scholarships. NSF raises funds by holding educational competitions made up of participants of Indian background in the United States. In the future, Pranav hopes to continue helping others by forming a club for aspiring young authors. ¢

Simple Healthy

Resolutions… And How to Keep Them by IMRAN AHMED, MD; Scripps Coastal Medical Center, Escondido

Ambitions are high after the ball drops on New Year’s Eve. It’s a new year and a chance for a new you. Millions of Americans set lofty health-related resolutions for the year to come, from reviving their gym membership and losing weight to quitting smoking. But before you spend money on a new workout wardrobe or go boom-orbust on the next fad diet, consider these modest tips for a healthier you in 2015:

• Take advantage of our beautiful year-round climate. Walk at least 30 minutes three times a week. Gradually progress to walking every day. • Eat a diet that’s high in fiber, such as fruits and vegetables, but low in saturated fats. Eat less meat and more beans and nuts. • Drink six to eight glasses of water each day. • Get adequate sleep. Sleeping at least seven hours a night typically benefits adults by boosting alertness and decreasing their chances of causing a traffic accident. • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher on exposed skin. • Stop using tobacco and cut back on drinking soda. See your doctor for cessation strategies. • Choose a primary care physician who’s a good fit and you’ll be more likely to keep your cholesterol under control, know your risk factors for diabetes, and undergo preventive health screenings that can help catch diseases in the early stages.

Choosing a healthier lifestyle is not just a verbal commitment – turning your new health choices into habits involves changing your mindset and understanding the true value of your personal health. Here are a few tips for making your changes permanent: • Don’t make comparisons. That new fad diet may be a quick fix, but not a long-term solution – and just because it worked for your friend or neighbor doesn’t mean it will work for you. Your health is about you, so make it that way. • Take it one change at a time. Change is hard – don’t make it harder with multiple changes at once. • Energize naturally. Self-restraint takes energy, and the best way to replace your energy levels is with natural glucose from fruit sources – the artificial stuff won’t work. • Laugh it off. Feeling overwhelmed? Put on a funny movie, or watch your favorite cat video online – doing something that makes you laugh helps release tension. • It’s not a sprint – it’s a marathon. We all want instant gratification, immediate results, and the path of least resistance. However, obtaining optimal health doesn’t happen overnight. Set reasonable goals and manage expectations; slow and sustainable wins the race. • Take pride in ownership. Your health is priceless – value it that way. There are no trade-ins, upgrades, or return policies. Take pride in the most precious asset you own. • Pump up the jams. Grab your ear buds and play some of your favorite upbeat songs. Music can put you in a better mood and also serve as motivation. • Look in the mirror. The buck stops with you, and the person staring back in the mirror is the key to your success. Change is possible and can be attained with a mindful commitment to responsible living.

Imran Ahmed, MD, is a family medicine physician at Scripps Coastal Medical Center in Escondido. Dr. Ahmed provides care for all ages and treats a wide range of medical issues.

Remembering Larry Himmel

HONORING THE MEMORY OF SAN DIEGO’S BELOVED REPORTER photo by Spark Photography

L

arry Himmel, longtime KFMB/Channel 8 reporter, television broadcaster, San Diego personality, and close friend to ZCode Media, recently passed away after his brave battle with cancer. Larry had been a loyal local reporter for the station since 1979, bringing an unparalleled sense of humor and artistry to the air. The news of Larry’s passing spread during Channel 8’s 11 p.m. broadcast in which Larry’s co-workers reminisced and shared stories about their time with him. As a reporter, Larry was larger than life and extremely well-respected in his field. He is known as one of the best feature reporters in his industry and is the recipient of over a dozen Emmy Awards. He was the type of reporter that went above and beyond to deliver a story. During the 2007 wildfires, Larry gained national attention for famously reporting in front his burning home in 92127. In 2012, when 92127 Magazine’s cover feature included Larry, his family and his story of that day, he discussed the events that led up to the chilling and heartbreaking live report. A friend of the ZCode Media family, Larry was a supporter of the local magazines and community news as a whole. Known for his quirky and off-beat video stories, he featured ZCode’s magazines in a report about the five year anniversary of the Witch Creek Fire. CBS has produced a touching video tribute to Larry on its site. It can be accessed at www.cbs8.com/story/26867145/remembering-larry-himmel. Guests are encouraged to sign the guest book in honor of one of San Diego’s legendary reporters. ¢

:::: HEALTHY SMILES

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gum Disease Researchers continue to find links between gum disease (periodontitis) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Periodontitis is an infection in your gums that destroys the structures supporting your teeth. Symptoms of periodontitis include loose teeth and gums that are red, swollen, and bleed easily. RA may lead to periodontitis: • If RA makes your hands stiff and painful, you may have trouble brushing and flossing properly. Good oral hygiene is necessary to prevent plaque buildup. • Some medications used to treat RA may lower your ability to fight off infection, which may lead to more plaque-causing bacteria. • RA may affect your salivary glands and cause your mouth to be too dry. Saliva helps protect your mouth from bacteria and plaque buildup. Doctors think that RA is caused by a combination of the genes you’re born with and events in your life that trigger those genes to become active. Periodontitis may be one of those triggers.

What You Can Do to Prevent or Control Periodontitis Although we still need more research on the links between periodontitis and RA, good oral health is especially important if you have RA. If RA symptoms are keeping you from brushing or flossing properly, talk to your dentist. You may need to have your teeth professionally cleaned more often, rinse with special mouthwashes, or get routine laser gum therapy. Furthermore, repair or straighten hard-toclean, crooked teeth in order to control periodontitis.

Honorary Mayor Campaign

RANCHO BERNARDO BUSINESS ASSOCIATION INVITES APPLICATIONS

T

he Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA) has a number of fundraisers throughout the year along with monthly receptions, networking breakfasts, and Lunch and Learn seminars for its members and guests. RBBA fundraisers involve the entire community, including two popular kids and adults events on the 4th of July, the Rubber Ducky race on the pond in Webb Park and an 18-hole mini golf course in the park. The RBBA’s biggest yearly fundraising opportunity is the RB Honorary Mayor program. Applications for candidates for honorary mayor for 2015 are being accepted as of Jan. 1. Customarily two to three candidates are selected each year. Honorary mayors of Rancho Bernardo have cut ribbons opening new businesses, have been featured attractions at community

events, and have even kissed a few babies during their 20-plus-year history of presiding at local festivities. Candidates must be at least 21 years old, live or work in Rancho Bernardo, and be members of the RB Business Association. Candidates earn votes by selling $5 raffle tickets, charging admission to parties, earning revenue from silent auctions, and selling chances on exotic vacations. The candidate who raises the most money is inaugurated as mayor and the first runner-up becomes deputy mayor. “Over the years we’ve learned how successful campaigns are run, so each candidate will be provided with an experienced coach to help plan and execute their campaigns,” said Marty Judge, President of the Association. “The Honorary Mayor receives a great deal of publicity during his or her reign, so it is a

business-building opportunity like none other in North County,” said Larry McIntyre, Executive Director of the Association. Typically, honorary mayors collect a scrapbook full of photos and articles from the media. Proceeds from the campaign have benefited RB High School Miss RB Scholarship Fund, the Boys & Girls Clubs, the RB Historical Society, the Ed Brown Center, the RB Community Foundation, and the RBBA. For further information about becoming a candidate, contact Marty Judge at 858-385-0876 or marty@rbbaconnect.com. The RBBA highly recommends that the community uses its 300-plus members for services and goods. Go to www.rbbaconnect.com to easily search for the business you need as well as membership opportunities. ¢

hen Jo Driscoll was 70 years old, she relocated to Rancho Bernardo in search of finding a volunteer position that served a good cause. “I heard a lot of good things about Rancho Bernardo Senior Services and found it to be a worthwhile organization benefiting the residents of RB,” said Jo, a resident of RB’s Oaks North community. That was the year 1993, and today, after 20 years of helping with Rancho Bernardo Senior Services – a nonprofit organization that provides free services to seniors residing in RB – Jo (age 91!) remains an avid volunteer for the group, currently a member of its board. While Jo highlighted RB Senior Services’s current efforts to increase community awareness on its available programs, she also emphasized its ongoing need for more funding. “Each January, we send a solicitation letter for donations, which is our major source of income,” said Jo. And she stressed the importance of adding volunteers to the group. “During tax season we offer free tax preparation. We need additional income tax preparers due to high demand,” she stated. “And one of our most popular programs is hot meal delivery. Additional drivers are always needed and appreciated.” Jo further explained that volunteers are needed to help in the front office. In an effort to stay involved in her community, Jo has not only volunteered for RB Senior Services, but had previously served as president for the Oaks North Community Center Board, and had volunteered for the Republican Women organization. Making a difference is something that comes naturally to Jo. “I was the first woman to be chief deputy insurance commissioner in Montana, the first woman to be insurance commissioner in Oregon, the first woman to be president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioner, and vice president of regulatory affairs for Standard Insurance,” she shared. Apart from her volunteer efforts, Jo enjoys life with her two daughters, son-in-law, and “grand-cat.” She also stays active, visiting the Safari Park and local library. “For a number of years I was a member of the lawn bowling club in Oaks North,” added Jo, “And depending on who is playing, I enjoy watching golf tournaments every weekend!” ¢

The first step is to bake cake as per directions on the package. (Layer-cake pans were used.) Let cake cool completely. Remove from pan. Cut off the outer edges of your cake. Combine your cake with frosting to create cake balls. Do this by crumbling cake into a large bowl – the smaller the crumbs, the better. You can do this by cutting off pieces of the cake and rubbing them together gently. Another method for doing this is to mash cake up with a fork. Now add anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 cans of frosting to your cake crumbs. The consistency to work towards is that of clay. Start with a little bit of frosting and work your way up, because if you add too much frosting in this step there is no going back. Shape your mixture into balls. Your cake pops should be about the size of a quarter in diameter. Using freshly washed hands, roll the cake into balls just like you would with Play-Doh. Put your lollipop sticks into your pops. First dip about one-half of an inch of your lollipop stick into melted chocolate (see below for chocolate melting instructions). Then insert the lollipop stick about half way through the cake pop. Put your cake pops in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes so the chocolate will harden. Now you are going to begin dipping your cake pops in chocolate. Take your cake pops out of the fridge and let them sit until at room temperature. Melt about twelve ounces of chocolate in the microwave at thirty second intervals at half power. Now begin dipping your pops into the chocolate, but make sure not to stir the cake pop in the chocolate because it will cause your cake pop to fall off its stick. Decorate with sprinkles while chocolate is not yet dry. Use a styrofoam block or cake pop stand to hold your cake pops vertically until they are dry. Use a ‘Candy Writer’ to decorate when chocolate is dry. You may store them in the refrigerator or freezer. Enjoy! Makes: Up to 30 cake pops

San Diego SWEETHEARTS THE CHRISTENSENS CELEBRATE THEIR STRONG TIES TO THE COMMUNITY by LAINEY KRAL photo by Spark Photography

R

enee and Brandon Christensen have deep roots in Southern California and are 2nd and 3rd generation San Diego natives. They have loved San Diego all their lives – and they've known each other almost as long. "As silly as it sounds, we were high school sweethearts," said Renee. "We have known each other since our elementary school days at Mt. Woodson Elementary in Ramona." The two became good friends while attending Ramona High School, but didn't begin dating until their senior year. After graduating from high school in 2001, they left for UC Irvine together. Brandon graduated from there with a BS in Physics, while Renee left to finish her degree at Scottsdale Culinary Institute in Arizona.

Since moving to Rancho Bernardo's Playmor community in 2008, they've developed strong ties to the North County region as well. Renee is a stay-at-home mom, and Brandon is a senior software engineer at Solekai Systems. "We enjoy outdoorsy activities like hiking and camping, and we definitely make use of the many trails nearby," said Renee. She is also a member of the RB Chorale and helps the nonprofit fundraise to provide scholarships to local high school seniors. She explained, "Besides being extremely fun to sing in the RB Chorale, it feels very rewarding to help talented students pursue their musical dreams." Their son, Archer, turned 2 in October, and has proved to be quite the young comedian. "He is a bright and loving little guy, who already has a fun sense of humor," shared Renee. "Most recently he heard the phrase 'See you later alligator, after a while crocodile,' and he swiftly condensed it to 'See you later, crocodile.' It’s become one of his favorite things to say." Renee and Archer participate in a Learning Together parent and child class at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church Preschool, which Archer enjoys a great deal. He also loves anything to do with animals, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Elmo. With parents this engaged in the beautiful Rancho Bernardo community, Archer is sure to grow up as a lifelong San Diego lover just like them. ¢

Delivery day was a festive event, with Santa Claus arriving in a UPS truck, a stilt walker from the Fern Street Circus, and a free concert from The 5-50’s led by Keven Ford. ElderHelp of San Diego recently received a grant from the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation to help continue the good work they do for the community. Find out more at www.elderhelpofsandiego.org.

CA “Most Braggadocious” State

HeyLets, a new social mobile app determined to help people share experiences without feeling social pressure to look cool or impress their friends, recently polled 2,500 Americans to rate the number of posts they typically make on potentially self-promotional topics on social media sites. The study found that California frequently engaged in selfpromotion, with 77% of people posting about job promotions, exciting events, memorable experiences, and more, winning the title “most braggadocious” U.S. state. California was followed by Washington, Nevada, Maryland, and then New Hampshire. Utah received recognition as the “most humble” U.S. state, with Oregon, South Carolina, and Kansas close behind. HeyLets also asked respondents about the top five most popular topics they discuss on social media sites. These included going on a special trip, attending a memorable event, meeting a noteworthy person, and sharing something nice your significant other did. For more details on the study visit www.heylets.com.

Chargers Jewelry for a Cause

Game-day wear doesn’t just mean jerseys and face paint these days. Chargers Safety Eric Weddle has joined forces with local jewelry designers to create a Chargers-themed jewelry line, with a portion of the proceeds donated to battered women’s charities. Patrick Pickford, along with colleague Gerly Noland, was excited to start the project. “Eric is a very good friend of mine,” said Patrick. “It seemed like a perfect fit for us to collaborate on a Chargers-themed jewelry line in support of the cause and donate to those in need.” They plan to continue the collaboration with accessory items for men too. Eric and the designers say they have been overwhelmed by the support from the fans and the community response. “It means everything to give back to the community and those in need,” said Eric. Detect and Protect

Ambassador Girl Scout Janel Cuevas recently presented her Gold Award Project at both the Rancho Bernardo Library and the Carmel Mountain Ranch Library. The project involves workshops led by Janel informing young adults about early detection and prevention for breast cancer, in partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure San Diego. The workshops were free and open to the public to encourage participation from individuals who might not otherwise get this information. Early detection is very important to breast cancer survival rates, and younger individuals are less likely to seek screening than older individuals. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, and represents an opportunity to make a lasting impact on the community – as well as months of planning and preparation. Projects are evaluated on their effectiveness, long-term impact, and the leadership involved. For more information about Janel’s project contact her at janelcuevasgoldaward@gmail.com.

Leaders of Change

The North San Diego Business Chamber’s Leaders of Change events are a great way to learn about topics relevant to the current economic climate and the recent luncheon with Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO of Scripps Health, was no different. He took the stage with Brock Hardaway, President and CEO of Millennium Health, for an interview about healthcare, leadership, and turning organizations around. Chris emphasized the importance of leading from the front lines and being accountable, advising audience members to openly share their experiences, give everyone the same information, be situationally aware, and leave no one behind. Genuine actions speak louder than words, and leading courageously is important to move past what’s comfortable. The audience enjoyed the opportunity to hear from two great leaders in the healthcare industry and asked plenty of questions throughout. For more about the North San Diego Business Chamber and upcoming events visit www.sdbusinesschamber.com.

Supporting Small Businesses

The California Small Business Association and the California Small Business Roundtable recently honored Assemblymember Brian Maienschein with the 2014 Small Business Leadership Award. The award recognizes Maienschein’s commitment to assist small business owners and organizations, based on his responsiveness to the business community and his role in legislation that supports small businesses. The awards dinner was held at the Park Hyatt Aviara Hotel, where Maienschein is pictured with his two daughters, Taylin and Brenna, and Nick Anastasopoulos, owner of Athens Market Café and member of the California Small Business Association. Anastasopoulos is also a former officer of the association’s board of directors. According to recent data, California’s small businesses employ over a third of the entire state’s workforce, highlighting the importance of small businesses to the state’s economic recovery.

North County Rotary’s Annual Football Game

The San Diego North County Rotary Club just presented the 23rd Annual Rotary Bowl. The annual game between Mt. Carmel and Rancho Bernardo High School was first sponsored by the club in 1992. The game itself was founded shortly after Rancho Bernardo High School was formed. As many of the new students came from the Mt. Carmel area, they saw the game as a great opportunity to continue a close relationship with the school, as well as a budding rivalry. Rancho Bernardo High School took home the win this year and was awarded a special trophy. For more information about the San Diego North County Rotary Club visit www.sandiegonorthrotary.org.

Return to Local Roots

Martha Leebolt, an internationally acclaimed dancer, began her career in Rancho Bernardo. She trained at Black Mountain Dance Centre before joining the Northern Ballet troupe in Leeds, England in 2001. In 2010 she won the award for Outstanding Female Performance in Classical Dance for her performance as the Marquise de Merteuil in Dangerous Liaisons from the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards. These are the United Kingdom’s only professional awards that are specifically dedicated to dance. She has also performed as Beauty in Beauty and the Beast, Daisy in The Great Gatsby, and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. She created the role of Cleopatra in David Nixon and Claude-Michel Schonberg’s Cleopatra. Last month Martha had an opportunity to return to her San Diegan roots. She performed the lead role of the Sugar Plum Fairy in Southern California Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. This was her first return to the Southern California Ballet stage in 14 years.

ELITE PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY HELPS CHILDREN AND THEIR PARENTS FEEL GOOD ABOUT GOING TO THE DENTIST

E

lite Pediatric Dentistry was the first pediatric dental practice in 4S Ranch and has been providing dental care to children in the community for over two years now. Under the care of Dr. Femme Ambrosio and her team, the practice strives to provide extraordinary care for every patient, every day. “We are a small boutique practice and are focused on each family’s needs. My goal for every child is that they are healthy, safe, and happy.”

According to Dr. Ambrosio, a board certified pediatric dentist, having a boutique practice allows her the time necessary to ensure that children and parents have a positive experience and the best possible care. The office encourages open communication and takes the time to explain prevention plans, treatment and procedure options, and finances. Dr. Ambrosio understands that each child is unique and must be treated as such.“These visits can be overwhelming and we hope that getting to know each child individually will help in their overall care.”

It is the friendly and compassionate team at Elite Pediatric Dentistry that truly sets the practice apart. Dr. Ambrosio has worked in various pediatric dental offices throughout the country and learned a great deal from each experience. When she decided to open her own practice, she and her team not only have the knowledge, but the skill set and personality to provide for their patients. “From the moment a parent calls to schedule an appointment to the time a family walks out the door they are treated with care,” said Dr. Ambrosio.

In my office, I understand the three different relationships involved – the doctor, parent, and child. We look forward to being a part of the community, their family, and watching them grow.” 

an Diego’s brewing scene is booming these days, and we in North County are lucky enough to experience the best of the boom right here in our own communities. Craft breweries, also known as microbreweries, are independently owned and produce small amounts of beer,

allowing for higher quality and greater individualization than traditional breweries. Perhaps nowhere is this industry growing faster than in San Diego, which has become a beer-drinker’s dream destination – and not just for the beaches any more. Local breweries have been stepping into the international spotlight with their award-winning beers. The industry’s exhilarating growth shows no sign of slowing down. With the recent celebration of the 6th Annual San Diego Beer Week, we’re excited to offer an insider’s look at the best breweries North County has to offer. The craft brewers we speak to have a huge variety of differences in technique and taste, but they all share a deep-rooted passion for their products. We invite you to read along and see what the buzz is all about.

URGE GASTROPUB CLASSIC COMBINATIONS REACH THE NEXT LEVEL AT URGE GASTROPUB

“We make sure that we have one of the cleanest draft systems in San Diego to ensure that the beer is served as the brewer intended.”

S

ince the opening of their first restaurant eight years ago, the three men at the helm of Urge Gastropub have been a vital force behind Rancho Bernardo’s culinary renaissance. Grant Tondro, Zak Higson, and Nate Higson are all local natives and Rancho Bernardo High School graduates and are proud to have made such an impact with The Barrel Room, Urge Gastropub, and Brothers Provisions. With Urge Gastropub, the brothers and Grant wanted to open a place where customers feel like welcomed guests in a friend’s home. The restaurant takes the traditional pub concept and elevates it to the next level, with high-quality renditions of favorite foods and 51 craft beers on tap. “Our inspiration comes from many places but is all built around the simple idea that food should be unpretentious but delicious,” said Grant. The extensive tap list is a point of pride and proves that quantity and quality can go hand in hand. “We exclusively serve craft beer,” explained Grant. “While there is certainly a strong emphasis on local offerings, we are focused on serving the best beers we possibly can.” To further that goal, the team has several members who have completed the Cicerone Certification program – the brewing world’s equivalent to a sommelier program. Grant shared, “It is a challenging examination process and I’m proud to say that we have four members of our team that have passed the test.” The entire Urge team places great emphasis on doing things the right way at every step. “We make sure that we have one of the cleanest draft systems in San Diego to ensure that the beer is served as the brewer intended,” said Grant. They handle all of their draft tech maintenance inhouse to ensure it’s done well. The rest of the community has certainly taken notice – in 2013 Urge Gastropub was selected as the Small Business of the Year for California’s 77th District. Grant, Zak, and Nate are proud of that accomplishment, but even prouder to be able to give back to their hometown. “We recently spearheaded – with a lot of help from others – San Diego’s first IPA festival and were able to raise over $40,000 for local causes,” said Grant. The Urge team looks forward to keeping up the good service, both inside the restaurant and out in the Rancho Bernardo community.

Lightning Brewery

F

or Ph.D-level Biochemist Jim Crute, science is second nature – and so is brewing beer. When he made the switch in his professional life to start up Lightning Brewery it seemed like a natural transition. The brewery was founded as a small artisanal brewery and remains that way today, only now with its beers available in over 300 local restaurants, shops, and grocery stores. His science background inspires him to discover innovative brewing methods. “Our flagship beer Thunderweizen Ale is crafted with a very timeconsuming and very hard-to-emulate process of decoction mashing,” said Jim. “This method enhances the body of the finished beer, dramatically improving taste, impression, and enjoyment.” Methods like this are what make Lightning Brewery so unique. “We are the first, and, to my knowledge the only brewery in San Diego County that uses this process,” he noted. Lightning Brewery has earned dozens of regional and national awards. “In 2012 our seasonal beer Old Tempestuous Ale won the Best of Show award at the California State Fair,” shared Jim. “We take that award as having the best beer in California that year.” Lightning Brewery is located at 13200 Kirkham Way in Poway. The Cork & Craft

H

ave you ever been intimidated while beer or wine tasting because you’re surrounded by snooty “experts” who make you feel inferior? 92127’s Abnormal Company has built their business around dismantling that attitude. Co-Owners Matthew DeLoach, James Malone, and Elvin Lai, friends and fellow Poway High School graduates, have made their urban brew and wine industry business – which now includes a new beer

brewery, restaurant, and expanded winery – approachable, friendly, and fun! The owners are especially excited about their newly opened restaurant, The Cork & Craft. James shared, “We all love good food, and there’s nothing quite like a delicious meal paired with a glass of wine or craft beer. We are so excited that this adventure has now led us into the action-packed craft beer and restaurant worlds!”

36 • 92128Magazine.com • January | February 2015

Abnormal Company is also proud to soon bring its customers in-house produced beers focused on drinkability in addition to the extensive tap and bottle list they currently have. Their glass-enclosed brewery is expected to be up and running by the end of the year. Abnormal Company intends to brew during restaurant hours to provide customers with a sense of artistry and display of their craft. According to Co-Owner Matthew, the company’s beer will be “gluten-reduced, flavorful enough to sit gently on the palate, and will pair perfectly with fare offered by The Cork & Craft.” As The Cork & Craft’s mission is to elevate the concept of comfort food to a gourmet experience, this new brewery will encourage customers to think a little more about what they are drinking, try out new beer and food pairings, and dare to step out into the abnormal. Bruski Burgers & Brew ruce Nguyen, Owner and Founder of Bruski Burgers & Brew, is proud to offer some of the best burgers and craft beer in North County, but is even prouder of how he serves them. He designed Bruski as a spot where Scripps Ranch residents can feel at home. “When you enter our restaurant, you will be greeted with a smile and treated like family,” said Bruce. As a longtime Scripps Ranch resident himself, he found a sense of

belonging in the welcoming community, and he works to promote that sense of belonging through his restaurant. “Our approach is to use the freshest ingredients available,” shared Bruce. “We are strong supporters of ‘buy local.’ Our beer lineup is proof of our strong relationship with local breweries.” He includes larger local breweries like Ballast Point and Stone Brewing Co. as well as supporting smaller, newer breweries.

The Bruski tap list is also tailored to suit San Diegan tastes. “IPA is king in San Diego, so we feature as many IPAs as possible,” explained Bruce. “On any given day, we will have at least a third of our taps pouring an IPA or an IPA variant like a red IPA, black IPA, or double IPA.” The lineup updates constantly to provide the perfect combination of new choices and old favorites. Bruski’s local involvement extends beyond the tap. As Bruce said, “It makes us feel good to be able to give back to our community. We support our local schools, sport teams, and organizations through sponsorships, donations, and fundraisers.” He has provided mentoring opportunities to guide students pursuing hospitality management degrees, as well as hiring local students and sponsoring fundraisers for local organizations. stablished in 2013 by Rancho Peñasquitos resident Alex Van Horne, Intergalactic Brewing Company has quickly set itself apart as an artisanal small batch brewing company. According to Alex, the brewing company has crafted well over eighty varieties of beer in just their first 18 months alone. It is this innovation, along with the company’s “never give up and never surrender” attitude and motto “to boldly brew,” that’s greatly benefited their craft. With signature brews such as their award-winning Coconut Porter, That’s No Moon Triple IPA, and their most popular beer, Andromeda IPA – their fruity and citrusy twist of a San Diego IPA – the brewing company is not afraid to experiment with new ingredients and recipes. “Our uniqueness comes from our dedication to exploring flavors and new styles,” explained Alex. Intergalactic Brewing Company is constantly experimenting with new flavors; however one thing is certain not to waver: their involvement with their community. “We [maintain this by] brewing small batches of passionately crafted beer for our community and getting involved with local beer festivals that are put on by nonprofit organizations,” shared Alex. innovation and keep our thoughts and processes open to creativity.” “We currently offer six beers, a wonderful refreshing West Coast pale ale, a nice delicate amber ale, a new-to-San Diego brown porter, a smoked porter, and a sweet stout,” he explained. “We are also planning to produce a red ale and an imperial stout, which will be available in January.” Further ahead, the brewery is also planning a number of special bottle releases for St. Patrick’s Day. When asked the overall philosophy behind O’Sullivan Bros. Brewing Co., Ed had only one answer: “Quality, quality, quality. In everything we do.” That quality is the result of caring and commitment from everyone involved with the company. “All our employees are part time and are passionate about brewing,” shared Ed. “Almost all of them are in the UCSD professional brewing certificate program.” O’Sullivan Bros. he Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation (RBCF) was proud to celebrate the 25th Annual RBCF Thanksgiving Luncheon at the RB Inn, representing a quarter century of charitable giving and community building. The event began with a silent auction that wasn’t so silent – attendees were happy to catch up with old friends and meet new connections. Auction items represented the best of what San Diego has to offer, with opportunities to enjoy amazing local restaurants, salons, and attractions. Once everyone was seated for the lunch itself, this year’s grant winners were honored for their service to the community. This year RBCF presented $67,000 in grants to 18 organizations, including the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society, Bernardo Heights Middle School Choir Boosters, Disadvantaged Youth Alliance, and Friends of the Rancho Bernardo Library. The ZCode Media team was thrilled to represent 92128 Magazine at such an important community event. ¢

his holiday season, the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary Rancho Bernardo Unit concluded a tremendously successful poinsettia fundraiser for the 19 th year running. RB Unit members took orders from individuals and businesses throughout the community, then organized pick-up and delivery options for early December so donators could complete their holiday decorating early in the season. About 15 volunteers came together for delivery day, taking over tasks from sorting and organizing to driving the plants to their destinations. According to Tammy Young, who ran the fundraiser, the unit ended up selling 1,265 small “Holiday Special” plants and 83 larger “Holiday Grande” plants, totaling 1,348 plants sold. Unit members select a different program to support every year based on a wish list from Rady Children’s Hospital. The unit’s goal this year was to raise enough money to purchase four vital signs monitors for the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, dedicated to helping young patients. The vital signs monitors cost $1,600 each, so the unit needed to raise at least $6,400. They exceeded their goal, raising over $8,000 to donate to the hospital. The leftover funds will go towards other efforts to help children and the hospital. Tammy gave special thanks to Joanie and Howard Mees of Joanie’s Greenhouse, who coordinate getting all the plants together every year.

The RB Unit was founded in 1971 and remains an active, multigenerational organization. The group meets once a month, but members often gather outside meetings as well for social activities. Learn more at www.rcharanchobernardo.com. ¢

Rejoice in the New Beginning

Ho

ho ho, do you hear that? No, it’s not the laughing of Santa Claus (the holiday season is long gone, unfortunately). In fact, it’s the laughter of high school students everywhere rejoicing in the new beginning – nothing too dramatic, just the start of the new semester. You could probably hear the laughter of seniors across the country above everyone else as they wrap up their final college applications and now eagerly await college decisions. Well, actually, maybe you can’t hear any of the laughter since all the students will be catching up on their sleep. As the juniors let go of their AP English textbooks and the freshmen return their Of Mice and Men books, all the classes can be heard rejoicing in not just the completion of one semester, but also the fresh start of another. Finally, half of the year is behind us, and everyone is gearing up to prepare for the last half of the year. The end of January and the month of February are filled with exhilarating events planned out by our very own ASB. The students

44 • 92128Magazine.com • January | February 2015

of ASB have been working hard since November planning Rancho Bernardo’s second annual winter formal, highly acclaimed by students last year, at the end of January. This night is a great opportunity for students to dig their noses out of their AP Chemistry textbooks and spend a magical night with their friends at the RB Inn. Not to mention the famous (or infamous depending on how you look at it) Human Relations Conference coming up in February. In between all the fun and games we cannot forget that new beginnings mean new responsibilities. Just because we’re having fun at dances and other school events doesn’t mean we can forgo our responsibilities as students and neglect our schoolwork. While we embrace the fresh start we must always remember to finish the year strong. ¢

WHALE WATCHING Gray Whales Travel Through San Diegan Waters on Their Winter Migration by LAINEY KRAL

S

urfers and sailors aren’t the only ones who enjoy San Diego’s offshore playground, even in the depths of winter. Every year the eastern Pacific population of gray whales travels in small groups down the North American coastline towards the warm lagoons of the Baja California peninsula. Their annual voyage is considered the longest migration of any mammal. San Diegans are lucky to be able to witness this incredible venture – many gray whales can be seen here from midDecember through January, and from February through April on the return journey north. Gray whales typically span 49 feet in length and can weigh up to 40 tons. They can be recognized by distinctive light gray patterns on their dark gray skin. They also have a series of raised bumps on their backs, known as a dorsal ridge, rather than a dorsal fin. Gray whales live in two populations on either side of the Pacific – the western population is critically endangered with approximately 130 individuals, while the eastern population off the North American coastline has over 20,000 individuals. The eastern population spends much of the year in Alaskan waters in between migrations to Baja California. Want to see our giant visitors for yourself? There are plenty of ways to do so by land or sea. If you’re watching from shore, try to schedule your viewing between mid-December and mid-February, when

the whales travel closer to land. Great spots include the Birch Aquarium, Cabrillo National Monument, Scripps Park above La Jolla Cove, and Torrey Pines State Reserve. Gray whales dive for three to six minutes at a time before coming to the surface to breathe. They’ll blow three to five times before diving back down – when out watching, scan the water for spouts to find whales before pulling out the binoculars for a better view. For a closer vantage point, there are quite a few options to get out on the water. Many whale watching cruises offer on-board guides who can tell you everything you want to know about the guests of honor, plus guaranteed sightings or you get a second trip free. If you’re looking for an even closer encounter, try a tour that takes you out on a smaller, faster vessel – or even a kayak tour that lets you paddle within 50 feet of the giant mammals. ¢

RBCC’S FIRST ANNUAL SAFETY FAIR ENTERTAINED AND EDUCATED

The

Rancho Bernardo Community Council’s (RBCC) first annual safety fair was a great success. Residents of all ages explored a fire truck, got free kid’s finger printing from RSVP, and learned about senior scams from the District Attorney’s office. Booths covered topics like water safety, internet and computer safety, senior issues, bicycle safety, fire prevention and preparedness, and school safety. Attendees also had the opportunity to donate blood through the San Diego Blood Mobile. The fair took place at the RB Recreation Center, the RB Community Park, and the Ed Brown Senior Center. The event was free and open to everyone in the county, with bottled water, coffee, and snacks provided so everyone could stay energized and hydrated. Every participant received a reusable cloth goody bag with free coupons to local businesses, note pads, pens, Vial of Life kits, and LED flashlights for emergency bags. Many of the 28 vendors also had other goodies to give out. The RBCC has hosted an annual CPR/AED training event for the past three years in a row, and has helped train over 800 people in lifesaving techniques at these events. With so many successes behind them, the RBCC decided to expand that training event into a huge safety fair to provide even more critical resources to the Rancho Bernardo community. Of course, participants in the new safety fair were still able to receive valuable CPR training! The RBCC hopes to build on their success again with an even larger event in 2015. imberly and Joel Callahan met six years ago when they were both teaching at one of the Fred Astaire Franchised Dance Studios. With their shared passion for dance and their motivation to open their own dance studio, they decided to make their dream come true. “We opened the Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Rancho Bernardo in December 2013. Our goal is to reach out to community members and invite them to come and dance with us. We want to bring back classic ballroom dance to all generations and educate the public on all the health and social benefits ballroom dancing has to offer,” explained Joel. The Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Rancho Bernardo welcomes students of all levels, from first-time dancers to those with years of experience. Students at the studio can learn a variety of American style smooth and rhythm dances such as the waltz, tango, foxtrot, East and West Coast Swing, salsa and Mambo. According to Joel, the atmosphere at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Rancho Bernardo

is welcoming, high energy, and inspirational. “We are proud of our students who step outside of their comfort zones and try partnership dancing. We know how nervous they can be, but they are willing to give it a try. LOCAL VIDEOGRAPHER PRODUCES FILM ON SAN DIEGAN ARCHITECT

92128

resident and local videographer Vivian Blackstone recently finished work on a project three years in the making. “An American Architect” is the story of Sim Bruce Richards, a San Diegan architect who came from humble beginnings, was discovered as a young student by Frank Lloyd Wright, and went on to change lives with his work. “It is a tribute to all the artists who find a mentor who will take a chance on them,” said Vivian. The film showcases some of Richards’ residential architecture as well as interviews, including James Hubbell, Ken Kellogg, Wally Cunningham, and Richard’s widow, Janet. Vivian has long been interested in the art of filmography. “As a small child growing up in New York City in the late ‘20s, I was always fascinated by film,” she shared. “In those days the closest thing to a moving film was a small packet of pages, about 1” wide by 3” tall, it was a flip book.” She later found a career in Los Angeles as a graphic designer, designing TV cards on large boards, before learning how to operate a camera. “But it wasn’t until 1962 when I moved to San Diego that I was asked to learn how to use a movie camera,” explained Vivian. “It was the beginning of a love affair with people and motion pictures.” That love affair has continued to this day. Currently president of her own studio, PeliGraphic Productions, Vivian is currently working on a film about the life and work of Edmund Bordeaux Szekely, her own mentor when she first came to San Diego. ¢

Mostess The Hostess with the

Guidelines for the Season by TORI MORRISON

If

you have been chosen to host this year’s New Year’s Eve cocktail party or special Valentine’s Day celebration, you’ve been given one of the best gifts of the season – the chance to share this special time of the year with your loved ones and transform it into an unforgettable occasion. In today’s fast-paced society, it can be difficult to sit down and start planning for these special events, but it’s also a time to embrace that challenge and transform a party into the event of the year. Don’t fret, we are here to help you slip into those hostess with the mostess shoes with the ease and grace of a seasoned professional. Here are some tips, tricks, and ideas that guarantee your guests will have a good time this season.

Preparations

Party Time

1. Fancy touches

1. Choose the mood

• Crystal dishes make a great impression, even if they are filled with appetizers you took straight out of the bag. • Play with the decorations. Accents, including paper star ornaments, wall confetti, festive drink stirrers, streamers, and garlands greatly add to a New Year’s party. • For Valentine’s Day, try using baked goodies, cards, candles, or candy as center pieces or center piece accents.

2. Perfect that playlist

• It adds to the ambiance, contributes to conversation, and makes everyone feel more comfortable.

3. Love those lists

• Keep a to-do list on hand or stick Post-it notes around the house to remind you of tasks you need to complete before guests arrive.

4. Food selection

• Some of your friends will have special dietary needs, others are just really picky. With food it’s best to stick with simple and delicious. It’s also important to remember your vegan friends and ensure you have fare they will enjoy too.

5. Don’t dirty the dishwasher

• Unload that helpful machine to prepare for the dirty dishes ahead.

50 • 92128Magazine.com • January | February 2015

• Always remember that the mood or vibe you give off is what sets the tone of the party.

2. Introduce other guests

• You’ve brought everyone you love to celebrate this special occasion so make sure they get to know one another.

3. Embrace conversation

• Encourage others to embrace it too and make sure your topics are inclusive.

4. Snap away

• Take photos of the event... heck take a video! You can use them to review what ended up being successful and what could be improved upon. This will stop you from repeating dishes, and let you know which friends get along well.

5. Be gracious

• Thank your guests for coming by handing out party favors. Not only will this make them feel special, it’s also a great way to end the evening on a positive note. ¢

Success Brian McLean Serves Clients and the Community with BDM Wealth Management by LAINEY KRAL | photos by Tyler McElhaney

B

I always try to operate in a mode as though I’m working with my own mother.” – Brian McLean

rian McLean knows that every individual has different backgrounds, needs, and goals. With BDM Wealth Management, he celebrates those differences by getting to know each client and working out the best plan for their specific situation. “I have structured my practice around my belief that individuals are better served in the financial arena by an independent, handson advisor who truly understands the unique aspects of each individual client or family,” shared Brian. By using a fee-based model, he prioritizes his clients’ success. He earned his BA from Loyola Chicago and completed his financial planning courses at San Diego State University. After working at a large financial planning firm, he decided to strike out on his own to build his boutique practice. He said, “Early on in my career I received a solid fundamental education in estate planning for high net worth individuals that has helped me with my overall philosophy of being a comprehensive advisor for all my clients.” That philosophy leads Brian to treat clients like family – he cares about them as individuals and cares about ensuring their

success. “I always try to operate in a mode as though I’m working with my own mother,” said Brian. “If a product or position would or would not be appropriate for my own mom, then it should or should not be presented to my own client.” He feels it’s important to be stable and accessible as an advisor, and brings up his family life as an example. As he explained, “I’m 46 years old, married 17 years, have two elementary school-aged sons, and I don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon.” He finds great personal satisfaction in helping new clients straighten out their situations. When a new client comes to him with a confusing portfolio, Brian is able to simplify their investments to reduce overall management fees and give them a better sense of where and how their funds are invested. Brian also finds fulfillment in contributing to the broader community beyond his clientele. He is a past president and current board member of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, as well as a current board member of Rancho Bernardo Senior Services. ¢

Helping Students Excel MARANATHA CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS SHINE WITH JAYNE HOWARD SERVING AS THE PERFORMING ARTS DIRECTOR by AMY LEHRER | photo by Spark Photography

M

aranatha Christian Schools (MCS) administrators requested Jayne Howard become their performing arts director in the fall of 2013. Previously, Jayne had served as the children’s arts director at The Church at Rancho Bernardo. There she produced numerous musicals and ran 12 summer theatre arts camps. Now at MCS, she oversees productions, music, and drama and musical theatre classes. This year she directed two elementary school productions and an all-school spring musical. In March, MCS students will perform Disney’s Peter Pan Junior at Maranatha Chapel. Additionally, she teaches two high school drama classes and the Junior High Worship Team. MCS also has two groups, an afterschool choir and a Victorian Christmas Caroling group, that sing at various events throughout San Diego. To teach these students the value of contributing to their community and the importance of sharing their gifts, Jayne arranges for them to sing at local assisted living facilities. Jayne enjoys her job and cherishes memories. She values working with students and watching them become accomplished performers. She shared, “I love to build relationships with students, and teaching them to glorify our Lord through their gifts and talents is most rewarding.” The time her students performed Annie at the Chapel stands out. Over the course of four performances, 85 first through twelfth grade students performed for over 2,000 people. Jayne offers some valuable advice. Those wishing to pursue musical theatre should audition for everything since actors learn their craft by performing. Singers should work with a voice coach longterm, not just before an audition. Jayne also hopes that those who love working with children consider getting involved with theatre camps. Growing up within a London thespian family of many generations, it’s no wonder Jayne pursued the theatre. She became involved in theatre and dance at age three. She moved to Los Angeles as an eight-year-old and later ran a dance studio in Tulsa for 25 years before moving to Carmel Mountain Ranch in 1998 due to her husband taking a job for Customs and Border Protection. Jayne has been married for 20 years and has four grown children and two grandsons. She loves spending time with her family and attending movies and the theatre with her husband Mike. She interjected, “I am grateful for all the blessings I have received from my family, all my students, their families, and our Lord. I love to sing His praises!” ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

3rd Quarter Slow Down Turns into 4th Quarter Boom!

T

he first half of 2014 proved to be very strong for real estate in San Diego. Homes were only lasting a few days on the market, often receiving multiple offers and over-asking price sales! We attribute this to families moving from and into different school districts along with homes appreciating after the long downturn, which saw sellers listing homes at an increasing rate. However, why the sudden stop in sales? Quite frankly no one knows, but we speculate on some of the obvious signs. Buyers found their homes earlier than usual while sellers saw the increase in their home values and decided to sell. Summertime typically marks a heightened home buying season, and once the dust settled most people elected to enjoy the splendid San Diego summer and the fun that comes with it! Meanwhile, several sellers either missed the market surge or had their homes priced out of reach. This fact contributed to a slowdown in sales. The slowdown in the third quarter had sellers rethinking their pricing and gradually lowering their price. We hit the fourth quarter with a flood of price reductions, and,

coupled with new inventory, it was off to the races! The market growth continues to rise as interest rates remain low... buyers are back! “With the election cycle behind us and 2015 well within sight, it’s a good time to start assessing how the market is shaping up. Inventory levels are finally rising in many areas and demand is still strong in most segments.” – Excerpt from San Diego Association of Realtors
