It’s a Miracle!
F
Derrick Breaux Publisher
or the better part of last year, our two youngest kids (9 and 10 years old) have been asking for pet hamsters. My wife and I had several conversations about it and ultimately decided that we would succumb to the request. After all, isn’t owning and taking care of hamsters part of the magical childhood experience? Isn’t it supposed to teach responsibility – and all of that other stuff that kids need to learn the hard way? So, a couple of days before Christmas, my wife headed to the pet store and came home with, not one, but two male Roborovski hamsters (the smallest of the dwarf hamsters). I have to admit, the little guys are very cute. Needless to say, they were the hit of the gift exchange. Fast Forward 15 Days. My daughter had a friend over for a play date. All of a sudden, I heard high pitched shrieks and screams (which aren’t that uncommon during these play dates) coming from upstairs followed by the inevitable rumbling of footsteps running down the stairs. Both girls were screaming at the top of their lungs, “The boy hamster is having babies! How can a boy hamster have babies? Oh my goodness. What should we do? What should we do?” Chuckling and with a bit of a dismissive attitude, I let them know that this was literally impossible. However, upon further observation, I realized that the impossible had in fact happened. It was a miracle! The “boy” hamster was definitely giving birth – not to one baby, but to a litter of six little hamsters. The Breaux household went into immediate lockdown. Chaos had officially set in. Once word of the miracle hit the streets, parents and other friends were quickly en route to check out the new little guys. There were even talks of live hamster cams. Life as we know it would clearly not be the same. As family and friends gathered to see the modern day miracle, I immediately began consulting with Google (knower of all things) to try to figure out how this could have happened. Google responded by letting me know that the gestation period for ‘Robo’ hamsters is about 22 days. This meant that the “boy” hamster was pregnant when we purchased her. This information prompted additional questions. I put more intense pressure on Google to get to the bottom of the mystery. Is the other hamster also a female? If not, should we separate them? Google was a bit indecisive in this area, so we ultimately decided to move the hamster of unknown sex into its own cage the next day, especially once we realized that the mother had already exiled it into a distant corner of the cage. It seemed like the right thing to do. Fast Forward 21 Days. Since Google had instructed us not to mess with the baby hamsters, we merely observed for several weeks while contacting friends who might be interested in adopting some of the critters. The hamster cam idea had also been overridden because we couldn’t quite figure out how to make it work (code phrase for “I was lazy”). The baby hamsters were now weaned from the mother and running around. They were as cute as you can imagine. Control of the Breaux household had now been regained. Fast Forward One More Day. I received an unexpected text message from my wife, “Our boy hamster (I can’t repeat all of her words) just had SIX MORE BABIES!” I realized we had officially lost control once again – in fact, it seems we were never in control after all. Talks of hamster cams resumed. Visitors stopping by to see the new miracle babies stepped up to an all-time high. We did Facebook posts. We hit the phones. Desperate emails were sent out. We needed more people to adopt more hamsters! At the end of all of the excitement, there are two things that I am now certain of. For starters, the mother hamster is officially not a boy. Additionally, the other original hamster is definitely not a girl. Other than that, all I can do is enjoy the chaos and laugh.

Vitamin D DEFICIENCY
by MARK SHALAUTA, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo
Often nicknamed the “sunshine vitamin,” Vitamin D is an important but frequently misunderstood nutrient. Conflicting news reports touting the link between Vitamin D and cancer prevention, or debating the pros and cons of Vitamin D supplements, have only added to the confusion. While the jury may still be out on Vitamin D’s role in immunity or disease prevention, one thing is clear – our bodies need adequate Vitamin D levels for proper health, and we’re not immune to Vitamin D deficiency simply because we live in a climate with beautiful year-round sunshine. Why it’s Important Vitamin D helps our bodies absorb calcium and maintain normal levels of phosphorus – in other words, Vitamin D makes our bones strong. That’s why children with Vitamin D deficiency can develop rickets, a disease that causes bone softness and weakness, and adults who don’t get enough Vitamin D are prone to osteomalacia, which causes weak bones and muscles.
Mark Shalauta, M.D., is a family medicine physician at Scripps Clinic in Rancho Bernardo. Dr. Shalauta provides comprehensive primary care with a special interest in newborn, pediatric, and adolescent medicine. While he is trained to perform a variety of procedures, he specializes in newborn circumcisions, skin biopsies and procedures, joint injections, IUD placement, and colposcopies.
Looking for a new doctor? To find a Scripps physician near you call 858-500-3148 or visit www.scripps.org/92128. 14 • 92128Magazine.com • March | April 2015
Where to Find It It may sound hard to believe, but our bodies produce Vitamin D when exposed to sunshine, specifically the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. While many of us will get all the Vitamin D we need from sun exposure, others will need to get Vitamin D through other sources as well. These individuals include people who spend a lot of time indoors, whether it’s due to an office job or because you’re home-bound due to your health. Additionally, while sunscreen use is critically important to preventing skin cancer, its continuous use may hamper Vitamin D production because sunscreens help block UV rays from reaching our skin. Vitamin D is found in some foods including egg yolks, cheese, pork, fortified milk and cereals, and fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel. While you can also purchase over-the-counter Vitamin D supplements, please talk to your primary care doctor before taking any, to determine whether you actually need them and what dose is appropriate. Too much Vitamin D can be harmful to your health. Who is at Risk? Certain people are more prone to Vitamin D deficiency. In addition to people with limited sun exposure, those who are at higher risk include people who are elderly or obese, people who have darker skin, and babies who are exclusively breastfed. Additionally, certain medical conditions such as celiac disease and Crohn’s disease can cause a deficiency. Talk to Your Doctor Because symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency may not be obvious, it’s very important not to diagnose yourself. Your primary care doctor can check your Vitamin D levels with a simple blood test. If you are Vitamin D deficient, your doctor will work with you on a course of treatment that may include careful sun exposure (to minimize skin damage from UV rays) and the proper use of Vitamin D supplements. ¢

VARUN RANGASWAMY MASTERS THE BASSOON AT RANCHO BERNARDO HIGH SCHOOL by LYDIA COBB | photo by Spark Photography
I
t seems we all know someone who strums the guitar or beats drums. But a bassoon? The bass voice of the woodwind instrument is played by Rancho Bernardo High senior Varun Rangaswamy. He’s earned accolades from community groups in Indian Classical music and in local and statewide musical competitions. He’s also in the school’s band and orchestra. Varun, who’s lived much of his life in Sabre Springs, started playing the saxophone in fifth grade. By the end of his freshman year, the assistant band director asked if he’d like to switch to bassoon because they needed more players. After several weeks he fell in love with the instrument. “Playing bassoon helped me learn a lot more about classical repertoire,”

shared Varun. “In band and orchestra we don’t just play the pieces. A lot of times we learn about the history and the composers.” He’s most inspired by Leonard Bernstein, the late American composer and pianist. Varun admires his ability to connect people with music in a way that encourages exploration into different parts and types of compositions. His favorite subjects are equally English literature and biology because, Varun reflected, “We talk about the human system but in vastly different and fascinating ways.” He describes Rancho Bernardo High as a close-knit community; a place where it’s easy to make friends.
“PLAYING BASSOON HELPED ME LEARN A LOT MORE ABOUT CLASSICAL REPERTOIRE.” Most of Varun’s time is spent songwriting or composing symphonic or chamber-form pieces, and lately instrumental solos. He likes a competitive tennis match or a relaxed game of basketball with friends. He points out he’s not the skateboarder prototype, yet he used to enjoy the sport. Next year in college, Varun is considering a major in neurobiological sciences. He’ll plan to minor in music, always keeping it close, while continuing to play bassoon, sing, and compose music. When they have extended breaks, his family likes to travel internationally. “We discover other cultures, other climates, and best of all, other foods,” he added. As the bassoonist nears graduation, he can look ahead to new repertoires, not only in sheet music, but also in the multi-faceted life he is composing. ¢

Congenial Collaborations CMR/SS RECREATION COUNCIL HAS FUN NEW DEVELOPMENTS PLANNED
T
he Carmel Mountain Ranch/Sabre Springs Recreation Council has seen a lot of exciting changes recently. The council is an advisory committee of local community members dedicated to promoting recreational activities for the benefit of the entire Carmel Mountain Ranch and Sabre Springs area. “The most rewarding part of the volunteer job has been helping to shape improvements in our community,” shared Chairperson Gwen Leslie. One recent improvement is the new basketball group hired by the council Next Level Sports. Response from local families has been overwhelmingly positive. Gwen continued, “It’s about doing the right thing for the community. We have also been trying to improve the quality of the parks, programs, and the facilities themselves.” The council looks forward to making many more improvements in the near future. Short-term goals include enhancing the spring egg hunt, installing security lights at Sabre Springs Park, continuing work on a designated dog park, hosting two concerts in the park this summer, and continuing to build relationships with local businesses. “We have an energetic group with numerous fresh ideas,” said Gwen. “We are congenial, cohesive, and collaborative. We are very fortunate to work together.” The council has grown in recent years, from a group of three or four people to the current total of 10 members, with representatives from the Carmel Mountain Ranch Little League, the Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club, and other local businesses. Despite the recent growth, Gwen was quick to add, “We still have room for a few more. We would love to have more Sabre Springs/Creekside residents too!” Learn more about how to get involved at www.carmelmtnranchrec.org. ¢

Headaches and Jaw Pain? Check Your Posture. If you experience frequent headaches and pain in your lower jaw, check your posture and consult your dentist about temporomandibular disorder (TMD), recommends the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), an organization of general dentists dedicated to continuing dental education. Poor posture places the spine in a position that causes stress to the jaw joint. When people slouch or hunch over, the lower jaw shifts forward, causing the upper and lower teeth to not fit together properly, and the skull moves back on the spinal column. This movement puts stress on muscles, joints and bones and if left untreated can create pain and inflammation in muscles and joints when the mouth opens and closes. “Good posture is important, yet many people don’t realize how posture affects their oral health,” said AGD spokesperson Ludwig Leibsohn. An oral appliance can help align the teeth in a position that will reduce facial pain caused by poor posture. The appliance can also prevent future damage to teeth.

roncos and Nighthawks recently put aside their rivalry for a day of fun and friendship at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. The Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) and Del Norte High School (DNHS) boys basketball teams hosted a collaborative field meet for members of both schools’ Best Buddies programs. The day started with food and socializing before the games began, followed with the awards presentation. “The best part of this is that it was all the idea of the DNHS and RBHS basketball coaches!” shared Jennifer Conlon, Resource Specialist and Department Chair at DNHS. “They’re hoping to break down the ‘rivalry’ wall between the two schools by using the awesome kids involved in Best Buddies!” Best Buddies high school programs provide opportunities for one-toone friendships between students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities. ebbie Kurth enjoys traveling and trying new things. She has skydived, once performed in a flying trapeze act in Whistler, and rappelled 33 floors from the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. However, the place she most enjoys is right here in town. “Rancho Bernardo has become my ‘Mayberry’ – a small-town feel, but with immense charm and sophistication,” shared Debbie Kurth. Small towns have leaders. Debbie was recently bestowed the title of honorary mayor of Rancho Bernardo, and added, “It’s a privilege that I will cherish for many years to come.” As honorary mayor, she’s well connected. “There are so many ways to give back to your community,” she said. “It is a great way to meet individuals and learn about the businesses and services available.” She serves on the board for the Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA) as treasurer and chair of several outreach committees. She enjoys awarding grants to local organizations as a board member with the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation (RBCF). Debbie was recently named “Volunteer of the Year” for both the RBBA and the RBCF. She’s also president/treasurer of the Woodcrest Heights HOA and treasurer of the Community Association of Bernardo Heights. Rancho Bernardo became her beloved home when she was the first administrator at Casa de las Campanas, a skilled and assisted living facility. She transitioned from her career in healthcare administration to launch her own company called Business Services International, Inc. With her healthcare contacts, she began hosting meetings for healthcare organizations and expanded her services for individuals as well. “It has been very rewarding the last several years to provide these services locally,” she added. BSI’s services include marketing and fundraising for various organizations, weddings, anniversaries, theme parties, and golf tournaments. Debbie saw a need for her services and took it internationally. She’s held meetings and special events for clients throughout North and Central America, Europe, and the Caribbean. She’s originally from Lancaster, WI where most of her family still resides. Her great aunt just turned 100. She visits several times a year and appreciates Skype for keeping in touch. In her free time, Debbie shares she’s a novice golfer. She loves spending time outdoors and also bikes and plays tennis. Friends are important, and Debbie appreciates gettogethers for drinks and dinner, movies, and plays. While the campaign for mayor was a lot of work, Debbie enjoyed it. Her advice to her successor? “Enjoy representing Rancho Bernardo and have fun,” Debbie shared. She’s living by example. ¢

6TH ANNUAL HATS OFF TO VOLUNTEERS WILL HONOR STAND-OUT COMMUNITY MEMBERS
R
ancho Bernardo will recognize 70 exemplary individuals during the 6th Annual Hats Off to Volunteers on Saturday, April 25. The entire community is invited to enjoy the free event, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Rancho Bernardo High School Auditorium. “It’s a nice way to say thank you to all the volunteers in different organizations whose representatives are receiving recognition,” said Jeff Shea, President of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation with Hats Off Chairman Nick Anastasopoulos. “It’s one of my favorite things that we do in conjunction with the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame and the Rancho Bernardo High School Foundation.” Hats Off has been hosted by the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation since its inception, and last year the RB Hall of Fame joined the effort. This year, the RB High School Foundation has joined the collaboration as well. Hats Off will begin and end with an opportunity for participants to learn more about some of the nominating organizations at the more than 20 booths set up in the auditorium lobby. Jeff explained, “Each organization was allowed to set its own honoree criteria for selecting its outstanding volunteers, who might not have a leadership position but have contributed greatly to the success of the organization and its impact on the Rancho Bernardo community.” The official recognition ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m., with check-in at 9 a.m. The program will last approximately an hour and
honorees will receive a certificate and commemorative hat. Various politicians and standout community members are expected to participate in the ceremony. Contact Jeff with any questions at 619-417-3117 or jeff@shearealty.com. ¢

or Joan Boccio and Paula Githens, volunteering for The Elizabeth Hospice is a rewarding experience that allows them to use their special talents and compassion to make a difference. At The Elizabeth Hospice, volunteers function as an integral part of the care team for hospice patients, supporting patients and families during an extremely difficult time. “I have a strong foundation in working with people who are ill, as well as years of professional experience in the holistic health industry. Personally, I was highly involved in the death transition of both parents and two sisters. I felt it was time to give back to the community using the gifts I have,” revealed Paula. Paula and Joan are both practitioners of Reiki, the Japanese healing technique that uses touch and massage to transfer healing energy to patients. “As a Reiki master, I was interested in offering my ‘energy healing’ to those in need. I’ve been able to contribute support and care for many patients and families in difficult situations. Their response of gratitude is a reward in itself,” related Joan, who also volunteers at Sharp Memorial Hospital offering Reiki to patients. When these two compassionate women are not volunteering their time and expertise for The Elizabeth Hospice, they both enjoy spending time with their families and relaxing at Café Merlot at the Bernardo Winery. Joan, a former elementary school teacher, is also fond of traveling, especially throughout the U.S. “My husband and I have spent much of our vacation time visiting all 50 states and many National Parks, enjoying the amazing natural sites of our country,” said Joan. Paula, who worked in an administrative capacity supporting the chief of surgical oncology at UCSD, just celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary with her husband, Larry. “We share a blended family of my two adult sons and their wives and Larry’s daughter, son and three grandchildren. Family is very important to us, as is enjoying the company of friends, riding our bikes throughout the community and hiking on all the wonderful local trails,” stated Paula. Both Paula and Joan encourage those who are interested in finding out how they can make a difference for The Elizabeth Hospice to visit www.elizabethhospice.org. Volunteer opportunities exist in a variety of areas, such as patient companionship and respite, running errands for patients and their families, pet therapy, art therapy, and providing transportation for patients. ¢

BERNARDO HEIGHTS FITS THE BILL FOR THE BIRDSONG FAMILY by KELLEY GUSICH photos by Spark Photography

orey and Kia Birdsong thought about telling 92128 they met in college while studying at the library. But then they came clean – really it was a fraternity party at the University of Delaware. The fabulous result is the same: now Corey, Kia, eight-year-old Zoe, and five-year-old Ryder are loving life in Bernardo Heights. “This is a great area for an active family with young kids,” Kia shared. Walking can happen everywhere, from Paseo Lucido Park to the Bernardo Heights Community Pool. There are many options for local youth sports leagues, and the Rancho Bernardo Library is right down the street. “Before our cross-country move,” Kia said, “all our research showed us that North County would be the best fit for a family.” Bernardo Heights fits the bill in more ways than one. Zoe and Ryder are close to their school, and “in the future they can walk to their middle and high schools,” Kia confided, “just like we did when we were kids.” Zoe takes ballet and has performed in The Nutcracker with the San Diego Youth Ballet for two years.

RB Hosts International Rotarians
San Diego recently hosted Rotary’s International Assembly, when District Governor Elects (DGE) from Rotary districts all over the world gather to train for their new positions. The Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club had the opportunity to host a welcome dinner for eight guest DGEs, six spouses, and 19 local members and spouses. Because three of the DGEs hailed from Sweden, non-Rotarians Anne-Marie Maxe and Tom LeBus were invited for their knowledge of the language. The remaining DGEs represented Australia, Brazil, Czech and Slovak Republics, and England. Peter Meisen, honorary member of RB Sunrise Rotary, hosted the dinner at the office of his GENI organization. The dinner began with a half hour of conversation and learning about each other’s experiences in Rotary Clubs around the world before enjoying the Indian cuisine. Then, Peter took the floor to share his efforts in collaboration between GENI and Rotary International. Former District Governor Carl Kruse and RB Sunrise President Elect Alison Farrin also shared current Rotary activities in District 5340 and right here in Rancho Bernardo.
RBHS Key Club Benefit Concert
The Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) Key Club recently hosted a benefit concert with all proceeds going towards the Pediatric Trauma Program and The Eliminate Project. Dancers, singers, magicians, musicians, and other talented individuals put their hearts into the wonderful performance for a wonderful cause. “The acts of the show were all student performers with a wide range of talent and skills,” shared Sara Wang, current Key Club president and Lt. Governor-Elect for Division 37 South, who organized the concert in partnership with the Michael Zhang, the current Lt. Governor. “All of these acts helped gather awareness and funds for the charities, and include the school’s b-boys and musician’s club, and even a traditional Tahitian dancer.” The Pediatric Trauma Program aims to reduce the number of child-related injuries and trauma by providing education and resources focused on prevention. The Eliminate Project is focused on eradicating maternal and neonatal tetanus on a global scale. Learn more about the RBHS Key Club’s philanthropic efforts at www.rbkeyclub.org.
Girl Scout Cookie Season Wraps Up
Neighborhood Girl Scouts are wrapping up the cookie season and are gearing up to invest their earnings. Every penny of cookie proceeds stays in San Diego to benefit local girls. Troops earn funds for activities and community projects, while the council’s proceeds finance events, volunteer training, facilities, and financial aid for more than 42,000 members. The members of Rancho Bernardo-Poway Troop 2191 plan to donate a portion of proceeds to make the world a better place. Last year, they used cookie funds to create more than 70 activity bags to cheer hospitalized children at Rady Children’s Hospital. They also recently funded an outing to Butterfly Farms where they toured a butterfly vivarium and learned about how to protect endangered native butterflies. More than 2,000 Girl Scouts reside in the Rancho Bernardo and Poway areas. To learn more about Girl Scouting opportunities in the area contact Ashley Lewis at alewis@sdgirlscouts.org or call 619-610-0817.

92128 ARTIST SHARES WORK AND STORIES IN 31ST ANNUAL ARTWALK
S
ue Britt is thrilled to participate in the 31st Annual Mission Federal ArtWalk, an outdoor art festival in Little Italy on April 25 and 26. The 92128 artist creates landscapes with a unique medium she calls paper tapestry, weaving contoured paper together to create intersecting shapes. She collects paper wherever she travels. “Most of my papers come from Thailand, Nepal, or Japan,” she revealed. “Sometimes a piece of paper can inspire a piece of art and other times the art sends me searching for the perfect paper.” Sue is inspired by the places she hikes and San Diego’s natural beauty. She shared, “I will see forms, light, or color that I want to capture. Sometimes I discover metaphors for my life out there and then the pieces come to mean quite a bit for me.” She has also found a lot of inspiration in the process of rejuvenation after wildfires, which took her by surprise when she moved to San Diego 12 years ago. “Within a year of moving here, wildfires destroyed some favorite hiking places,” said Sue. “As I watched the life come back and hiked with burned trees, I came to appreciate the beauty, feeling of rejuvenation, and sense of time that burned trees and new growth carry.” She is excited for the ArtWalk as a chance to talk with other artist about their work. “ArtWalk is a community, just a bit more temporary, a point on a network of places artists meet,” she explained. “This is my third ArtWalk and I enjoy seeing folks that I only see at ArtWalk.” Learn more at www.artwalksandiego.org. ¢

A Growing Community The Bernardo Gardeners Club is a Welcoming Group of Kindred Spirits in 92128

The Bernardo Gardeners Club began in 1974 with only 13 members. Today the club boasts 94 enthusiastic members, all of them dedicated to the club’s causes of civic beautification and conservation. Club members donate trees every Arbor Day, maintain the Rancho Bernardo Library gardens, provide garden therapy services, and award scholarships to horticulture students. They also, of course, take time to relax, socialize, and trade gardening tips and tricks with fellow members. We talk to Club President Sherry Rudrud about her experiences leading such an engaged and creative group in the heart of Rancho Bernardo.

Q &A
with President Sherry Rudrud
WHEN AND WHY WAS THE BERNARDO GARDENERS CLUB FOUNDED? WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND THE CLUB? The Bernardo Gardeners Club was founded in 1974 by Alma Lee to encourage the beautification of the neighborhood and promote projects pertinent to gardening activities. The club has continued to grow in member numbers and scope since 1974.
IS THE CLUB AFFILIATED WITH A LARGER UMBRELLA ORGANIZATION?
HOW DID YOU PERSONALLY BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE BERNARDO GARDENERS? I saw a meeting announcement in the local paper, attended a meeting, and was impressed by the friendly, welcoming members.
We are members of National Garden Clubs, Inc. and Pacific Region and California Garden Clubs, Inc. Palomar District.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION, AND WHAT DUTIES DOES IT ENTAIL?
WHAT IS THE CLUB’S MISSION, AND HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT FULFILLING IT?
As president, I run the board meeting and the general meeting and assist committee chairs as needed.
Our mission is to promote conservation and civic beautification through gardening. This is accomplished through maintenance of floral arrangements and gardens at the Rancho Bernardo Library, donation of Arbor Day trees locally, an annual garden tour, horticulture scholarships, reforestation of Cleveland National Forest, and educational programs at each of our meetings.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT YOUR ROLE? THE MOST CHALLENGING? It is gratifying to watch envisioned projects and programs come to fruition. It is challenging to keep abreast of the details of every committee.
“The thing I love most is the community of fellow gardeners.” ~ Linda Faulkner, Board Secretary
“The more you participate, the more fun you will experience and the more you will learn!” ~ Jeanne Green, Publicity Chair

“Along with meeting some great people, I enjoy the variety the club offers.” ~ Diane Scharar, Vice President and Program Chairlady
HOW HAS THE ORGANIZATION GROWN AND CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? We have grown from 13 members to over 100 at times. We have come to focus our time and resources more on Rancho Bernardo and less on statewide projects.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE HOW A TYPICAL CLUB MEETING WOULD GO? Our meetings begin with the introduction of new members followed by announcements and a few items of club business. Then we have a garden-related speaker followed by refreshments and socializing.
organized workshops for our members in rose pruning, tufa containers, mosaic stepping stones, and ornamental glass objects. We have supported the Backyard Produce Project and awarded scholarships to horticulture students.
ARE THERE ANY EXCITING NEW PROJECTS OR EVENTS COMING UP SOON? Our annual garden tour will be held Saturday, April 18 and will include six beautiful local gardens this year.
WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY GOALS OF THE BERNARDO GARDENERS, BOTH SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM?
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT SOME RECENT GUEST SPEAKERS? WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME MEMORABLE PRESENTATIONS OVER THE PAST YEAR?
We endeavor to provide a welcoming setting where fellow gardeners can meet, socialize, and learn. We help people to engage in local gardening projects.
Native plant expert and author Greg Rubin spoke about the best California natives for our area and how to plant and care for them. Joe Walker of Obra Verde Growers presented drought-tolerant Australian plants suitable for San Diego. In June we toured a private estate garden in Fallbrook.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE ORGANIZATION’S MOST MEMORABLE PROJECTS OVER THE YEARS? We created and continue to maintain the gardens at the Rancho Bernardo Library. We have donated Arbor Day trees to Rancho Bernardo locations every year for the past 40 years. We created a prize-winning float for the Rancho Bernardo July 4th Parade. We designed and implemented floral interpretations for Art Alive.
WHAT PROJECTS HAVE THE BERNARDO GARDENERS WORKED ON RECENTLY?
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING GARDEN TOUR EVENT? WHEN IS IT, AND WHO DOES IT SUPPORT? The self-guided garden tour includes six local gardens. It takes place on Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available from our members, at our meeting, at Walter Andersen Nursery in Poway, or by

ARE THE BERNARDO GARDENERS INVOLVED IN ANY VOLUNTEER WORK? All our work is volunteer: Garden Therapy, Rancho Bernardo Library garden maintenance, weekly floral arrangements placed in the Rancho Bernardo Library, placement of Arbor Day trees.
HOW WOULD SOMEBODY GO ABOUT JOINING THE BERNARDO GARDENERS? WHAT IS THE CRITERIA FOR MEMBERSHIP? Membership applications are available at our meetings, at the Rancho Bernardo Library, and at www.bernardogardeners.org. Everyone is welcome! Guests may attend a meeting for $5.
“The members are so kind and generous – as I’ve made the transition from a yard to containers on a balcony and porch, the help I’ve gotten has been fabulous.” ~Ruth Collins, Second Vice President “Come to one of our meetings and you will enjoy learning more about care of your plants!” ~Virginia Dobias, Treasurer 46 • 92128Magazine.com • March | April 2015
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE BERNARDO GARDENERS? Our members are both men and women and come from all over the North County. We offer excursions to nurseries and gardens not regularly open to the public, and we have lots of fun!
IF YOU COULD GRANT THE CLUB ONE WISH, WHAT WOULD IT BE? All members would eagerly volunteer.
IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE THE BERNARDO GARDENERS USING ONLY FIVE WORDS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? Welcoming, knowledgeable friends having fun.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD FOR OUR 92128 MAGAZINE READERS? Our next meeting is March 20 at 1 p.m. at Rancho Bernardo Swim & Tennis Club. Please come join us! ¢

tep into a new routine this summer with a fun-filled dance camp at Danceology Performing Arts Campus! Danceology offers a broad variety of camps and classes throughout the eight-week summer session for young boys and girls of all experience levels. “The camps are engaging atmospheres designed to build the foundation and love of dance while cultivating a personal relationship with the family and the student,” explained Danceology Owner Nicole Lucia. “We assess each dancer’s individual level and commitment and recommend classes specially designed for your child’s need.” Programs include five different tiny tot camps for ages 3 to 5, intermediate workshops, and a beginning cheer/hip hop camp for ages 6 to 10. There are also boys-only hip hop and tap classes, as well as an adaptive dance class for young girls with special needs – the only local dance studio to offer such a program. “Every week, our dance camps offer new routines and themed music with special props to enrich the dance experience,” said Julia Pearson, Tiny Tot and Beginner Program Director. “Your camper can go all five weeks of camps and learn new routines each time!”
Two important parts of the Danceology experience are the welcoming environment and high quality of instruction. Instructors are CPR-certified and always on-hand to guide young dancers. The emphasis on nurturing and confidence-building has proven to have incredible results. Over the years, Danceology students have accepted college scholarships and developed professional careers in the industry. Danceology students as young as five years old are competitively ranked nationwide. “Since we’ve been open for over a decade, we’ve become experts in the field of dance,” said Nicole. “We’ve found our niche in creating that love and passion for performance and dance at a young age.” Sabrina Roux, a proud Danceology parent, enthusiastically attested to the program’s success. “We treasure every summer spent at Danceology,” she shared. “My daughter would not be as poised and well-rounded of a dancer today without having started in one of Danceology’s dance camps.” Kristina Rattray, mother of another young Danceology student, agreed. “Danceology is my daughter’s second home. We feel so privileged to dance in such a safe, beautiful, and welcoming facility that’s enhancing my child’s summer experience.” ¢

wner/Director of Outpost Summer Camps Stuart Jones grew up with an outdoor summer camp, Tom Sawyer Camps, when he was younger. “We hiked, rode horses, made forts, sang songs, performed skits, got muddy, and learned how to make and keep friends with both the campers and counselors,” he explained. He spent 14 summers there as a camper, counselor, and director, and then decided to start his own venture, Outpost Summer Camps in 2001. Outpost Summer Camps offers three

traditional camp programs to children between the ages of 3 and 14, serving Poway and surrounding areas. According to Stuart, “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Three-week long sessions are what make Outpost Summer Camps unique. Stuart explained, “In this amount of time children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends. Children are able to form genuine relationships while at camp.” Another hallmark of the camp’s uniqueness is the door-to-door transportation. Campers are picked up at their homes each morning, driven to camp, and dropped off at the end of the day. “Our families often tell us that the ride to and from camp, full of songs and adventure, is one of their child’s favorite parts of the Outpost camp day,” Stuart explained. “Our drivers are also our counselors and that makes the camp experience something special and unique, as kids are used to being driven around by their parents.” For more information about Outpost Summer Camps visit www.outpostsummercamps.com

G
et ready to tumble into summer! North County Gymnastics & The Gyminny Kids (NCG/GK) has the perfect camp for children of all ages and abilities. Children can choose from halfday recreational camps, skill clinic camps, high school, tumbling, and acrobatics-focused camps. Program Director Karen Mcguire explained, “NCG/GK was formed out of our enthusiasm for working with children and our desire to encourage students of all ages to lead a healthier and happier existence through physical activity.” Sessions are offered throughout the year on holidays as well as during the summer. “Children are grouped by age and camp preference as well as with any friends they have requested to be with,” said Karen. “Each camp session starts with a warm-up and review of safety rules. Then groups take turns with our famous Bungee Bouncer system, trampolines, and other equipment as well as enjoying craft and snack time provided by the gym.” At NCG/GK everything is possible with an awardwinning facility and highly trained staff. The 17,000-square-foot climate-controlled facility is recognized as a Gold Medal Children’s Facility by the Character Counts Program. With a combined total of over 300 years of experience, the star-studded staff of 27 includes Miss Yufei, the 2005 Chinese All-Around Champion, Mr. Dave, a California Coaches Association High School Coach of the Year, and Mr. Daniel, a nationally ranked judge at regional gymnastics competitions. All staff members are CPR/First Aid Certified and many also hold safety certifications through USA Gymnastics. ¢

New Leadership in RBBA RANCHO BERNARDO BUSINESS ASSOCIATION ELECTS SCOTT LAWN AS NEW PRESIDENT
T
he Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA) recently welcomed Scott Lawn as the organization’s newly elected president. Scott has served as vice president of the RBBA for the past year and is a former honorary mayor of Rancho Bernardo. Scott also currently serves as vice president of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation and has previously been chairman of the Rancho Bernardo Thanksgiving Luncheon. He received unanimous endorsement from the RBBA board of directors. RBBA Secretary Bill Chaffin was elected the new vice president, and Debbie Kurth will retain her position as treasurer. Previous President Marty Judge announced he was stepping down to devote more time to political campaigns. “I am delighted that Scott will be leading the RBBA,” said Marty. “Scott has been at the forefront of nearly every activity we have been engaged

in since he joined us in 2007, so he is ideally positioned to lead us.” Marty is a founding member of the RBBA and will continue to serve as secretary. Scott shared, “The RBBA has grown from 63 members nine years ago to more than 300 this year. We plan to continue this growth pattern and to continue to help our members build their businesses. The result will be a stronger community and greater prosperity for it.” The RBBA provides a variety of networking, growth, and service opportunities for its company and individual members throughout the year, including monthly receptions, networking breakfasts, and its Lunch and Learn seminars. The association also hosts a number of fundraisers, notably the Fourth of July events and the RB Honorary Mayor program. Learn more at www.rbbaconnect.com. ¢

Flashback
T
his school year officially marks the fourth year that Rancho Bernardo’s Musician’s Club has put on an annual show to wow the community with all of the members’ musical talents. The name of the performance, “Flashback,” derives from the fact that the songs take the listeners back in time all the way to the 60s and then traveling forward to the present, letting the audience enjoy songs by popular artists such as James Brown, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Spice Girls, and many more. The club that started four years ago began with one goal in mind: to make music that is not really taught in schools, such as the rock music that the members frequently enjoy playing. In hindsight, it is absolutely fair to say that this goal has not only been reached but has been surpassed by the amazing collection of students and the one quality that holds them together: their love and passion for music. In the midst of creating a spectacular show for the community, the

members offer each other support and education, creating a familial environment for everyone involved, as Madison Carmichael, a violist, shared. For people such as Madison, who have a passion not just for singing but also for instruments, the club provides a very unique opportunity to play untraditional music with bands onstage. Between countless hours of practice both at school and at home, the members were able to put on a fantastic show for over 150 people in the community who came out to support RB’s Musician’s Club and to have a great time. While the club does not have any more concerts this year, there will no doubt be another phenomenal concert next year that will leave the audience in awe once again. ¢ Jenny Jeong is a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School. Discover Flora, Fauna, and Fun at Local Botanical Gardens by LAINEY KRAL
W
ith the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, spring is the perfect time to explore the natural beauty in our backyard. San Diego is home to a varied collection of botanical gardens, bringing together native plant life with blooms from around the world. From orchids and butterflies to cacti and succulents, our local botanical gardens have a special something to share with everyone in the family.
Formerly known as the Quail Botanical Gardens, the San Diego Botanic Garden has been a colorful fixture in Encinitas for over 50 years. The sprawling garden features trees, flowers, and other plants from all over the world. Visitors can journey from the dragon tree grove of the Canary Islands to the cork oak trees and irises of the Mediterranean – or learn more about local history along the Native Plants and Native People Trail. Kids will enjoy the Hamilton Children’s Garden with a mountain stream, elephant foot tree forest, and tree house to explore. Nearby is the Bird and Butterfly garden, filled with flowers planted especially to attract our feathered and fluttering friends. Visit the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens to experience a unique blend of art and nature. With the goal to “Bring Together People, Nature, and Art,” the gardens showcase a stunning range of international and local plants as well as unique artistic pieces integrated into the garden layout. including sculptures, walkways, and walls created by talented local artisans. The site also features the California Natives Garden, Children’s Garden, and Antique Rose Collection along with a variety of culinary and medicinal herbs. One of San Diego’s best-preserved cultural landmarks also hosts many of the city’s horticultural treasures. Balboa Park is home to over a dozen beautiful gardens, including the Casa del Rey Moro Garden, the Children’s Ethnobotany Garden, the Japanese Friendship Garden, and the Rose Garden. And overlooking the Lily Pond and Lagoon is the park’s iconic Botanical Building. The impressive lathwork structure – one of the largest of its kind – houses over 2,000 cycads, ferns, orchids, and more. A touch-and-smell garden lets visitors interact more closely with chocolate mint, lemon mint, and other unusually aromatic plants. Be sure to point out the carnivorous pitcher plants and Venus fly traps to the kids! ¢

hen it comes to repairing an existing roof or installing a brand-new roof on a residence, homeowners that hire Top Line Roofing can feel confident they are receiving an honest estimate and that the work will be performed by a professional and courteous crew. “Top Line Roofing works with customers to discover their true needs, to educate them on the roofing issues they face, and to present them with options that work best for their budget and their needs,” stated Wayne Sorensen, Owner of Top Line Roofing. This local full-service roofing company has served San Diego County since 1991, and Wayne is proud to report that much of his business comes from the referrals of satisfied customers. When Wayne first opened the business, his primary focus was on roof repairs. Since that time, Top Line has expanded into the re-roofing realm, applying lessons learned from the repair side of the business. “Fifty

percent of Top Line’s work involves repairs that correct the mistakes of other roofers. We have learned how to install roofs correctly the first time and avoid these mistakes,” said Wayne. Top Line provides free estimates, and Wayne encourages homeowners to have their roofs evaluated every 18 to 24 months to prevent minor issues from becoming major problems. Another way Top Line sets itself apart from the competition is through its use of the latest technology. Wayne’s truck is equipped with a computer and printer, and in most cases, a typed estimate can be provided on-site. Additionally, digital photographs and iPads are used to show the homeowner the precise roofing problem. “We also use satellite technology to aid in measuring the size, area, and pitch of a roof,” explained Wayne. According to Wayne, Top Line has earned a reputation for being quick, clean, and professional. “Our employees have spent

“
:::: ORTHODONTIC PROFILE
We believe orthodontic treatment should be available to everyone.” – Dr. Kim
ORTHODONTICS FOR ALL CARMEL PLAZA ORTHODONTICS KEEPS PATIENTS SMILING FOR A LIFETIME by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Tyler McElhaney
In
2005, a storefront opened in Carmel Mountain Plaza shopping center with a slightly different mission than most of its neighbors. This shop is in the business of healthy smiles. Keeping the community’s teeth healthy and functional for a lifetime is the mission of Carmel Plaza Orthodontics. Many may not realize that orthodontics goes far beyond straightening crooked teeth. Crowded teeth, which can be difficult to clean, increase the chances of cavities, and misaligned teeth create a non-functional bite, causing greater wear and tear. Gum tissue can also be negatively impacted by poorly aligned teeth. Dr. Rafail, owner of Carmel Plaza Orthodontics, shared his motivation for opening the shop: “To provide the best orthodontic treatment to our patients, to respect their desire for better health and self-improvement, and to be ethically and morally professional in all of our practice.” This motivation culminates in an experience of “exceptional treatment with unconditional care, kindness, and respect,” stated the practice’s orthodontist, Dr. Kim. Braces, commonly associated with the teenage years, have proven to pay off for all ages. In fact, 40% of their patients are between the ages of 18 and 70. “We believe
64 • 92128Magazine.com • March | April 2015
orthodontic treatment should be available to everyone,” acknowledged Dr. Kim. The initial consultation is free, and the team is sensitive to work with every patient’s budget. The design of their office and treatments are critical elements of meeting their mission. The convenient location, the sports themed office, and the latest technology ensure the best quality of care. And the team is an integral part of this equation. Dr. Rafail has been in private practice in San Diego since 1990. Dr. Kim, an alumnus of Rancho Bernado High School, returned to San Diego after earning his doctoral degree from University of California San Francisco and training at Columbia University. Office

hoal Creek Elementary School students had a blast at the 11th Annual Otter Trot Fundraiser. Different grades participated in shifts, starting with the fourth and fifth graders, then the TK students, kindergarteners, and first graders, and finally the second and third graders. After getting their lap cards pinned on by parent volunteers, all the grade groups started the event with a warm-up in front of the school led by Gyminny Kids. Ollie the Otter came out to join the walking and jogging students, and everyone gathered for refreshments afterwards – with Otter Pops, of course! This year’s Otter Trot was organized by PTA members Cynthia West and Kimberly Loquist. Proceeds will directly fund crucial school programs, including paying for a physical education aide to help students kick up their heels and stay active all year long. ¢

pproaching its 25th anniversary, the Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation (PCPAF) is ready to celebrate a quarter-century of sharing a world-class variety of talents right in the heart of Poway. The PCPAF roster includes world-renowned artists like Johnny Cash, Jake Shimabukuro, Frank McCourt, Clint Black, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Art Garfunkel. as well as showcasing incredible local artists. Combine the unique, one-nightonly performances with the intimate setting – seats are no more than 106 feet from the stage – and every show is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing the smiles and joy on our audience’s faces as they leave the theater,” said Brittany Michel, Marketing Coordinator for the PCPAF. To enhance the experience even more, the PCPAF has added a Dinner on the Plaza where entertainment seekers can dine under the starts prior to enjoying the performance. The community has a lot to look forward to in the coming months. The PCPAF is excited to present a free youth musical theater camp, an annual part of their Arts in Education Initiative. Young community members are invited to audition for The Little Mermaid on March 2, then spend the week learning lines
and exploring the world of theater before the final performances on March 7.
“There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing the smiles and joy on our audience’s faces as they leave the theater.” – Brittany Michel On March 13, Grammy Award-Winning Singer and Songwriter Colin Hay will take the stage. Hay will perform songs from his solo albums as well as hits from his career as lead vocalist of Men at Work. Later that month, watch out for a night of laughter and levity with The Second City 55th Anniversary Tour. The world’s leading comedy theater and improvisational troupe will perform live at the PCPA on March 28. Celebrate The Romeros 55th Anniversary Tour on April 12. Having performed all over the globe, the Romeros are three generations of classical guitar superstars, and the PCPAF is proud to host them on their anniversary tour. Then on June 20, kick off the PCPAF’s 25th anniversary with the annual Taste of Our Towne fundraiser, featuring favorite local restaurants, wineries, and breweries. “The PCPAF

will be revealing some exciting changes for the coming year,” shared Brittany. Be sure to RSVP well in advance at www.powayarts.org. “The goal behind creating the PCPAF was to create a cultural town center where residents of North Inland County could sit shoulder to shoulder and experience great performances by artists from across the country and around the world,” said Michael Rennie, PCPAF President and CEO. To meet this goal, the PCPAF creates an ‘arts inclusive’ atmosphere where the community is enriched with quality performances, unique experiences, and valuable memories. The foundation has certainly succeeded in that aim. As Mayor of Poway Steve Vaus shared, “The Poway Center for the Performing Arts is a jewel in Poway’s crown. Without exception, there is something for everyone with a world-class entertainment experience right in our backyard.” ¢

SPRING

Lic # 481870 SINCE 1977
Brings energy saving
N
ow that the lovely weather has reminded you of the arrival of spring, there are a few ideas worth considering besides spring cleaning. We are all aware that increasing energy costs, legislation, decommission of San Onofre (estimated at $4.4 billion), and warming weather trends are causing substantial increases in residential utility rates. And we well recall how much our utility bills can be at the height of the summer. However, as a homeowner you can empower yourself by taking advantage of programs available in San Diego. The Home Energy Renovation Opportunity Program (HERO) allows homeowners to apply for low-cost loans making energyefficient, renewable energy products more affordable. HERO provides 100% financing at low interest rates, flexible payment terms, and repayments through your property taxes. The HERO
WITH 38 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY, NATURAL ENERGY HAS INSTALLED MORE SOLAR THAN ALL OTHER LOCAL COMPANIES COMBINED loan stays with the property even if it is sold and payments may be tax deductible, lowering the effective interest rate. Now that you have empowered yourself, consider solar energy for your home. Why all the interest in solar? Solar panels are popping up on roofs all over the neighborhood. What do your neighbors know that you don’t? It is undeniable that we all pay the proverbial sunshine tax to live in beautiful San Diego. Why not take advantage of such an abundant, clean, renewable energy source? Installations continue to boom and solar is more affordable than ever. According to Solar Energy Industries Association, (SEIA) this is because “since the third quarter of 2010, the average price of a photovoltaic (PV) panel has dropped by 63%.” Your neighbors also know that the federal solar tax credits end next year, and in addition to the HERO program, there are attractive finance and leasing programs with no money down for solar installations. They may also know that Natural Energy is the leading company in San Diego for solar. With 38 years in the industry, Natural Energy has installed more solar than all other local companies combined and offers solar PV systems made right here in the United States. Consider Natural Energy for your solar energy needs and go solar now! ¢ 70 • 92128Magazine.com • March | April 2015

Right Now is the Best Time for First-time Buyers to Purchase a Home!
B
eautiful, sunny San Diego County is one of the most soughtafter markets to find a home. With its moderate climate year-round, idyllic location, and close proximity to the beach and mountains, it’s no wonder so many families are looking to move here. Although it is ranked as one of the most expensive markets to purchase a home, the San Diego housing market is making a push forward and seeing some positive signs for 2015. San Diego has seen an upswing of economic growth in the past few years. The city is making some progress coming out of the Great Recession, which is great for those looking to buy a home in the area. As more jobs are becoming available and people are beginning to see those higher wages, many homes are being purchased before they are even built. While the market is hot, buyers are jumping on the chance to own their first home or downsize. Home values have seen a 4% increase, which is a good thing for the San Diego housing market. The median home price is San Diego is about $518,800 with a mortgage rate of 4.8%. Mortgage rates remain low in the San Diego housing market, but credit still remains tight. The median household income is going to be the driving force for the housing industry.
Local employment growth is the main driver in the San Diego housing market. As of now, the job growth is looking healthy moving in 2015. This past year, San Diego County added 30,000 jobs and now boasts an unemployment rate of 5.8%. Stability is key. Right now is the best time to purchase a home for those first-time buyers as interest rates are going to creep up more slightly this year again. This is still a good thing as it will bring balance to the San Diego housing market and keep the home price appreciation down. Don’t hesitate to get a new home or move up to the home of your dreams. The San Diego housing market is in a great place starting out 2015. Investing in a home in San Diego County at this time is definitely a beneficial thing for any family.
