What is the Special Ingredient?
W
atching each issue of this magazine come together is a very exciting thing for me. Regardless of the number of editorial meetings that we have, it is always fun to see the completed design in print. We feature local students, families, volunteers, businesses and other stories as they relate to our immediate community. We often talk about how there’s a little something for everyone inside of these pages – whether you are 4 years old or 104 years old. Many people often ask me about our community and what makes it a special place. It’s easy to run down the typical list – beautiful homes, high-ranking schools, nice people, close proximity to a lot of things, etc. We talk about these things all of the time. In fact, many of us moved to our community specifically for these things. But there’s something more. There seems to be a special ingredient that can be found in our great communities. I believe that special ingredient is volunteerism. I recently had a conversation with a friend discussing how volunteers have such a positive impact on our local town. In fact, he took it one step further and stated that our community is as nice as it is specifically because of the contribution and donation of time of local volunteers. The more I thought about it, the more I had to agree. There’s something special that happens when people donate their precious time Derrick Breaux for the greater good of the community. Volunteering comes in many Publisher forms. Some people are capable of donating great amounts of time and energy. Others have a more limited ability to donate time. The important ingredient is that contributions are in fact made – big or small. Regardless of the amount of individual time that a person can gift to the community, it’s hard to deny the huge difference that it makes. Whether you are running one of the communities’ nonprofit organizations, volunteering at local events, or simply picking up the occasional piece of litter left behind on the sidewalk, our communities are definitely better places because of the people that do it. Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Sunday F U N DAY! SHIRLEY MALLON GIVES SENIORS FUN AND LAUGHTER EVERY SUNDAY by LINDA FRABL | photos by Spark Photography
Ah,
MEET SHIRLEY Name: Age: Community: Volunteer Affiliation: Occupation:
Shirley Mallon 96 Rancho Bernardo Never Alone on Sunday Previously worked in a New York City college admissions office for 15 years. Family: Widowed; 3 children, 3 grandchildren, 4 great-granchildren Hobbies: Reading, knitting, playing card games
Sunday – when we get to unwind, spend time with loved ones and simply enjoy ourselves, right? While that may be the case for many of us, it also tends to be the saddest day of the week for senior citizens, as there are usually very limited planned social activities for them on that particular day. Hence, Shirley Mallon, a ninety-six-year-old Bernardo Heights resident, created her own group five years ago called, “Never Alone On Sunday.” “I started this group after my husband passed away because I found there were far fewer events for seniors on that day, and many of my senior friends agreed,” Shirley explained. That initial social gathering now includes dozens of people who meet every Sunday to play Bridge, Contract Gin (an easy version of Gin Rummy), Canasta, Mah Jongg and even Mexican Dominoes.
Group: Never Alone on Sunday Purpose: Fun! Meetings: Group meets every Sunday at The Remington Club (behind Vons), building #2; come about 12:30. Please park just down the block in the Guest Parking, not in front of the building. Details: Everything is free, including refreshments. Door prizes are given out the first Sunday of the month. Contact: 858-451-0065 www.neveraloneonsunday.com
The group used to meet at various random Rancho Bernardo locations, but in February 2013 the Remington Club invited the participants to have their weekly gatherings in their multi-purpose room every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Shirley remarked, “The Remington Club is a lovely place and they have been so good to us. Also, members of my group receive a discount worth thousands of dollars if they eventually become residents of The Remington Club.” No stranger to overseeing social functions, Shirley used to help her husband plan activities through another group they started back in 1994 called, “The Jewish Cultural and Service Club.” That group amassed up to 200 members, and Shirley’s husband came up with their meeting topic ideas. Shirley recalled, “One of my favorite topics was back when President Clinton, Boris Yeltsin and Benjamin Netanyahu were all in office. It was called ‘Bibi, Boris and Bill,’ and a local college professor spoke. It was great!” When she’s not playing card games, Shirley loves to read, knit and roam through the Bernardo Winery – “even though I don’t drink; it’s just so beautiful there,” Shirley remarked. She also regularly shops at Barons Market, Sprouts and Trader Joe’s. When her son visits her from New York City at least four times a year, he takes Shirley to the Barona Casino’s buffet, and he also created her group’s website, www.neveraloneonsunday.com. Thanks to Shirley’s efforts, seniors need not be lonely on Sundays anymore. Shirley added, “Come have an afternoon of fun and laughter while playing cards. Bring your friends, or make new ones!” ¢

n late November, ZCode Media hosted a mixer for the Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA) at our headquarters. For the first time, there was a record of 185 members and guests in attendance. RB Honorary Mayor Alex Monroe kicked off the night with a thank you to the hosts and attendees. There were door prizes that were won, including a bottle of wine and an enticing gift basket. Miguel’s catered with delicious finger foods and chips and dip, and live music was provided by the Sandy Devito Combo. :::: STUDENT STAR
Multi-Talented! Jake Bronson Performs on the Field and on Stage by LINDA FRABL | photos by Spark Photography
J
ake Bronson, a fifteen-year-old honor roll student at Maranatha Christian High School, credits his strong religious values for his vast accomplishments. He is not only class president and varsity football captain, but was voted Homecoming Prince. It is ironic that Jake is so popular, because he strives to not give in to peer pressure. He explained, “It is a struggle not to seek approval from others and be swayed by a desire to fit in. Although sometimes I fail, I feel good knowing that all I really need to do is perform for an audience of ‘One!’” A worship leader at both the Church at Rancho Bernardo and Maranatha Chapel, Jake regularly speaks to youth groups about purity in dating, which he and his girlfriend observe. Jake admitted, “The thing that drives me every day is my faith. A verse in the Bible that encourages me is 1 Timothy 4:12: ‘Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.’” Jake and his girlfriend happen to make beautiful music together, literally, and their band won second place at their church’s Battle of the Bands competition. Having studied piano for seven years, Jake loves to compose his own songs, and he’s parlayed his interest in music into musical theatre. To date, he has had roles in thirteen different musicals, including Perchik in Fiddler on the Roof and Rolf in The Sound of Music. In addition to performing on stage, Jake also performs for his varsity football team. As the starter on both offense and defense (running back on offense and free safety on defense), Jake is also the lead rusher and the backup quarterback. Praising his school for fostering his wide range of skills, Jake exclaimed, “What I like most about Maranatha is the opportunity to be involved in a variety of different activities. I am able to grow in academics, leadership, athletics and the arts.” Jake’s favorite class is AP Biology, because he said, “I love learning how the world and our bodies work.” In the future Jake wants to attend the United States Naval Academy and become a doctor, but for now this sophomore is happy to call Sabre Springs home. He proclaimed, “I like living here because of the strong sense of community – and the neighborhood block parties!” ¢

hanksgiving doesn’t just come on the last week of the month. It lasts all month, and in this case, all year long. The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation hosted the 24th Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon, located at the beautiful Rancho Bernardo Inn. The luncheon was held to thank sponsors for their generous donations and to announce the recipients for the foundation grants for the coming year. During the meal of traditional turkey, potatoes, and pumpkin pie, they showed videos of past grant recipients, including Westwood Elementary School’s new technology. Musical interludes featured Samanthan Belgum and Alice Dodd, the winner of the Rancho Bernardo Idol and Golden Idol contest, respectively. The afternoon concluded with auction winners and a parting word from Foundation President, Nick Anastasopoulos. ¢

PUSD
Gift Matching
{Donations Made Easy
by JESSICA WOODS
R
esidents are always looking for ways to give back to their communities. In the Poway Unified School District (PUSD), there’s an easy way to donate to your local schools, and then maximize that donation through your employer: the Matching Gifts Program. Here’s how it works: let’s say you want to donate $500 to PUSD. The next step would be to visit www.matchinggifts.com/powayusd, and type in your employer in the search box. For example, if I worked at Business A, I would type in the name “Business A”. Once you find the company selection that you work for, click it, and it will lead you to a page with contact information and steps to have your company match that donation. What does that mean? It means that if you donate $500 to PUSD Foundation, or to an individual school, your employer may match that and also donate $500. Steve Hafner, founder and CEO of HEP Development, said, “We frequently receive updates

from clients on how their matching gift campaigns are going. We were elated to hear from a couple of clients who didn’t do just a double but, yes, tripled and quadrupled their matching gift revenues.” The Gift Matching program is not confined to a particular season, but runs year-round. Some businesses will allow retirees and spouses of employees to donate and gift match. Either way, you and your employer are helping to benefit local schools throughout PUSD. Some of the participating businesses include: Abbott Laboratories, Apple, AT&T, Bank of America, BAE Systems, Hewlett Packard, Nokia, Northrup Grumman Corporations, Pfizer, Qualcomm, Sony Electronics Inc., Takeda San Diego, and more. To learn more about making a donation to the PUSD Foundation or to donate classroom supplies for a particular school, program, or teacher, please visit www.pusdfoundation.org and get started giving back.

After seeing her mother enjoying Casa over the following years, Jody and her husband added their names to the waiting list, anticipating a long wait before getting the call. To their surprise, they were invited the very next year. Though unprepared to move to Casa in their sixties, they fell in love with their apartment, the layout, and the beautiful view. In the time they’ve lived here, they’ve had the opportunity to see the “care” side of Casa in action. Jane had two serious health issues in the past two years, but in both instances, the swift action of the security and medical staff assured that Jane survived and fully recovered. For all four of these women, Casa de las Campanas has enriched their lives by offering amazing care and activities, while giving them the independence and living space to bond them even closer together. Casa de las Campanas is the only non-forprofit type A continuing care retirement community in San Diego County, celebrating over twenty-five years of excellence.
Casa de las Campanas is located at 18655 West Bernardo Drive, off Interstate 15 in North San Diego County. To make an appointment for a tour, call Marge Pronovost at 858-592-1870.

:::: LOCAL FAMILY 92128 Offers the Carroll Family Access to the Outdoors by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Spark Photography
B
etween moose hunting and mountaineering, Jacob and Rachel Carroll have found time to settle into their Sabre Springs community, start a family, and continue to pursue their passion for adventure. The high school sweethearts, originally from Montrose, CO, appreciate 92128’s access to the outdoors. Today, the Carroll family is living a slice of the mountain lifestyle in Southern California. This past summer, their eight-year-old son, Jack, climbed the Mountaineer’s Route on Mt. Whitney. The younger children, Mali Mae, 6, and Beau, 4, aren’t far behind. The kids love the outdoors and sports. Jacob and Rachel have a few of their own bragging rights. "Combined, Rachel and I have climbed over sixty fourteenthousand-foot peaks and hundreds of others,” Jacob explained. The best evidence of the adventurous life may be Jacob’s trophy moose head from his Alaskan hunting trip in 2007. Bagging a record moose would have been story enough, but when Rachel went into labor two weeks early with Mali Mae back at home, Jacob’s adventure skills were put to the test. He scrambled to get out of the backcountry, a trip which involved rafts, dead engines, satellite phones, a floatplane, and a red-eye flight, just missing Mali Mae’s birth by a morning. Living close to nature was a deciding factor to settle in Sabre Springs. “Our neighborhood is mature, with plenty of full-grown trees, and borders hundreds of acres of open hills, giving us access to nature and wildlife – and giving nature and wildlife access to us,” Jacob shared. “We regularly have raccoons, opossums, red-tailed hawks and great horned owls on our property. We didn’t grow up in the city, so we like the nature contact, especially for our kids.” Time around the house is spent focused on family and avoids electronics. The tree house, sand box, and pool provide the entertainment. “We don’t own video games and we have strict limits on tv,” Jacob related. During their “down time,” Rachel loves baking, and Jacob is a pencil sketch artist. The work week is in sharp contrast from their weekend adventures. Jacob, a Texas A&M graduate, is the president of a real estate private equity firm. Rachel, formerly a nurse in the surgical intensive care unit at Sharp Memorial Hospital, is a full time mother. In the midst of San Diego, the Carroll family found fulfillment in the nature of 92128 and the mountains beyond. With a strong sense of adventure and appreciation for the simple life, the Carrolls will always have a good story to tell. ¢

RBHS Students Thank Volunteers
For the past ten years at Rancho Bernardo High School, the students of the Special Needs classes have held a Christmas party to thank the school staff for the help they have received throughout the year. This year they would like to acknowledge those special volunteers from the past ten years, especially Lt. Bernie Colon, Lt. Sharon Smyth, and retired Sgt. Bob Cruz from the San Diego Police Department. They have each taken time out of their busy schedules to bring Christmas joy to these students at RBHS. along with bringing gifts for each student, each of the students had an opportunity to speak with Santa and enjoy lunch with all the goodies. at the Christmas gathering in early December, these students gave a special recital of “‘Twas The Night Before Christmas” for all the attendees. Sue Buhler, Roxanne Hayes, from the Special Needs classes at RBHS, would like to thank Santa, his helpers, and local merchants who made donations: Vons, Souplantation, O’s American Kitchen, Walmart, and Papa Johns.
To Walk Among Friends
“Permanent recognition for a permanent gift” – that was the slogan that former community leader Bob Wells used for the Rancho Bernardo Pathway of Pride, which was started in 1993 by the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation (RBCF). The purpose of the Pathway of Pride is to recognize individuals who have donated $1,000 or more to the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation Endowment. Located in Webb Park, there are now 270 plaques along the pathway. Installed at the pathway’s entrance is a special plaque to memorialize Bob Wells, a founder of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, who passed away in 2012. Wells established the Pathway of Pride as a fundraising opportunity for the foundation’s endowment and community grants program. “We’re proud that so many community leaders have chosen to participate in the Pathway of Pride,” said Nick anastasopoulos, President of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation Board. “It is a testament to how dedicated RB residents are to supporting our community.”

Candidates Speak Out At Mayoral Forum
Over 100 people attended the Mayoral Forum at the Ed Brown Senior Center in early December. The event was co-hosted by the Rancho Bernardo Community Council and Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council, and moderated by allison ash from Channel 10 News. Some of the highlights of the forum included first term Councilman, David Alvarez, promoting his environmental sustainability blueprint, which included residents purchasing energy from renewable sources, and the creation of a green economy sector. Kevin Faulconer, who is serving his seventh year as city councilman, promoted easing up on the red tape that hampers solar and other alternative energy usage. Both candidates agreed on not using tax payers’ money to finance franchises, and that keeping the public safe and fixing the roads are at high priority. They also emphasized how individual community characters are important.
Knit For The Cure Supports Susan G. Komen
Founded in 2004, the Knit for the Cure Campaign recruits knitters and crocheters to create handmade items to be sold at various Komen events, one of which included the Race for the Cure which was held on Nov. 3 in Balboa Park. although most items are created by San Diego County residents, the campaign had knitters and crocheters from all over including Connecticut, Virginia, and New York. This year, some San Diego knitters also formed a team and participated in the race. Knit for the Cure raised over $5,300 this year. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised remain right here in San Diego to cover every step of the breast health journey – from education, outreach, mammograms, and diagnostics, to surgeries, chemotherapy, and more. The remaining 25% of each dollar raised funds national research to discover the causes and cures for breast cancer. For information on how to become involved in next year’s campaign, contact barbara.susangkomen@gmail.com.

Sam and his team then came by on a given pick up day to collect the donations. according to Sam, this annual program helps hundreds of needy families during the holidays and beyond. “My family and I are very blessed and we love giving back to our community” said Sam. PowPAC Presents “Don’t Dress for Dinner”
Bernard is hoping to entertain his Parisian mistress for the weekend in his stylishly converted French farmhouse. He has arranged for a cordon bleu cook, is in the process of packing his wife, Jacqueline, off to her mother, and has even invited his best friend, Robert, as a suitable alibi. What could possibly go wrong? Well, suppose Robert turns up without knowing why he’s been invited? Say, Robert and Jacqueline are secret lovers? Or how about the cook being mistaken for the mistress and the mistress - who can’t cook - being introduced as the cook? The cook is Suzette, the lover is Suzanne, the friend is bewildered, the wife is suspicious, the husband is losing his mind and everyone is guaranteed a good time in this hilarious romp through the French countryside. Don’t Dress for Dinner runs Jan. 17 through Feb. 16 at PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 general admission and $15 for students, seniors and active duty military. There is a $2 surcharge for opening night, which includes a post-performance reception with the cast.
Palomar Medical Center Honored in Becker’s

Becker’s Hospital Review awards “forward-thinking healthcare organizations that regard ecological health, green initiatives and environmental stewardship as foundational pieces of its mission.” Becker’s applauded Palomar Medical Center’s use of evidence-based sustainable elements in the design including courtyards, natural light, a green roof and extensive use of LED lights. It also noted that health system staff is now educating other professionals on how to build and operate “hospitals of the future.” Congratulations to the staff at Palomar Medical Center for all their hard work!

It is the friendly and compassionate staff at Elite Pediatric Dentistry that truly sets the practice apart. Dr. Ambrosio has worked in various pediatric dental offices throughout the country and learned a great deal from each experience. When she decided to open her own practice, she and her staff not only have the knowledge, but the skills and personality to provide the best care to patients. “From the moment a parent calls to schedule an appointment, to the time a family walks out the door, they are treated with care,” said Dr. Ambrosio. Dr. Ambrosio is a native San Diegan and a mother, both of which she feels serve her well in her practice. Dr. Ambrosio is a mother to Bennett (3) and Amelie (2), and recently had her third child, Camdyn, this past November. “Being a mother has really changed the way I practice. As a mother, I can see the three different relationships involved – the doctor, parent, and child. My goal for every child is that they are healthy, safe and happy.” ¢

The Origin of Lacrosse at RBHS Back to the Roots
L
acrosse has been a staple sport of the Rancho Bernardo community for a long time, but not as long as it was at Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS). According to Bob Bruni, the founder of RBHS lacrosse, “Lacrosse in the RB community was not an easy venture way back in the early 1990s. Most of the community did not have much, if any, knowledge about the sport.” Originally from Long Island, NY, Bob had lots of experience running youth lacrosse clinics and hosting summer leagues to help him begin the program at the high school. His ultimate goal was to pass his love of the sport on to the next generation, and he knew the best way to reach that generation was through the high school and the community. “I wanted to give students in this community the opportunity to have another sport that they could play in college,” said Bob. And to his pleasant surprise, many of them did. He also hasn’t lost connection with many of his early players, including Grant Tondro, who once served as the team captain during his time at RBHS, and is now owner of The Barrel Room and Urge Gastropub. Bob’s proudest moment in those early years of the program was when the RBHS team made the San Diego County playoffs in 1994, in only their second season of competition. As a result of their success in 1994, he received the San Diego County Lacrosse Coach of the Year award. ¢

Working Up An Appetite
T
he morning of Thanksgiving Day, 4S Ranch residents gathered at 4S Ranch Community Park for the 4th Annual Thank You Run. There were over 1,000 participants, all helping to raise money for local charities such as Helen’s Closet and the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation. Helen’s Closet provides comfort equipment to terminally ill ALS patients, and the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation supports local schools and the surrounding community. The total funds raised this year was over $20,000. One highlight of the day, was the beginning of the children’s leg of the race. A volunteer, dressed in a turkey suit, started ahead of the pack, with the rest of the children participants running behind her. Good hustle! The winner of the 5K for men was Clay Biddle, and the winner of the 10K was Travis Linder. For women, the 5K winner was Melissa Butler, and the 10K winner was Janine Buehler. Congratulations to the winners. After all the hard work, and the medals were awarded, the post race festival featured fun for the entire family. There was a Karl Strauss beer garden and an Equinox laser tag arena. Everyone certainly worked up an appetite for the Thanksgiving dinners to be had that night. ¢

GolfTEC San Diego Helping Golfers Reach Their Goals by Offering an Organized and Innovative Plan by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Tyler McElhaney
F
or all you golf enthusiasts out there, GolfTEC San Diego may be just the place for you to improve your game. “GolfTEC has a proven track record with a 95% success rate, and nationwide we give 25% of all private lessons taught. No one else can say that!” exclaimed owner of the San Diego franchise, Suzanne LaTour. From custom club fittings, to virtual playing lessons, to a patented technology that compares your swing to those of professional players, GolfTEC offers not only a lesson in golf, but an experience, as well. “GolfTEC itself was started in Denver, in 1995, by co-founders and PGA Professionals Joe Assell and Mike Clinton,” stated LaTour. “Creating a consistent, well-documented golf instruction approach was at the heart of their new-to-the-world business concept. They set out to revolutionize the golf improvement industry and many would agree they’ve done just that.” While Suzanne – who is in her twenty-first year in the financial services industry – was researching various franchises to diversify for future retirement plans, she signed up to take lessons at GolfTEC. “Three lessons into my plan, I overheard that the store was for sale and called Denver to get more information,” she said. “I thought ‘Perfect. I love golf – I should buy this,’ and I ended up buying the entire San Diego Region with a plan to build out four Centers!”
It’s been almost four years, and GolfTEC now has expanded to two San Diego locations – one in Golden Triangle in La Jolla, and the other in Rancho Bernardo. “GolfTECs are fun, welcoming environments,” stated LaTour. “All of our team love what they do – they love to teach and they are passionate about the game of golf!” GolfTEC’s basic philosophy: “to make people better golfers and do it with an organized

and proven game plan,” explained LaTour. The GolfTEC plan is comprised of five main elements: a diagnosis of the player, lessons, video-based practice, an online accessible “player performance center,” and precisionmatched golf clubs. As stated in the company’s website, “Whether you are a complete beginner or an accomplished golfer, GolfTEC’s comprehensive approach to improvement can help you reach your personal goals.” ¢

The Tear-ific RBHS Royal Regiment
I
t is around 9 a.m. in the morning, and Rancho Bernardo High (RBHS) students might be nodding off in their second period class. But if you are in a room near the lush green stadium, your ears might hear the tick-tock of an electronic metronome, almost beating in time to your heart. And if you’re lucky, you might just hear the faintly musical blares of the exalted RBHS Royal Regiment. Fall season has been filled with news of this group of stellar musicians. In addition to their repeated victory at the Arcadia Championship, they won first at the SCSBOA Band Tournament, having, as diligent clarinet section leader Stephan Ahn “a show of our lives.” He describes the preceding final rehearsal: “Otani gathered us up and gave a speech about why we perform and what purpose we have. He told us to imagine all the past band alumnis, sitting in the empty RB stands. ‘Make them proud, make them say, ‘I’m glad I was in it.’” Center drum major Jonathan Zhu echoes this sentiment. “We didn’t know what kind of competition to expect, but we did know that how we performed this season would represent the legacy of the past twenty years of musicians.”
50 • 92128Magazine.com • January | February 2014
The pay-Bach is not only manifested in trophies – easily a hundred that tower over me – and the section in the RBHS Wikipedia page, but also in their hard work, every day and every night. After school, you can see band students Bizet-ly racing off to the fields near the gym to practice under the blazing sun while responsible bandos supervise. Indeed, the work ethic of these groups of dedicated musicians was truly something that was as equally valuable as their shiny engraved medals, plaques, and trophies. Zhu reflects that the Royal Regiment had its fair share of bad rehearsals mixed with the good ones. “It was easy to lose sight of what we were working for, and at times we complained. But we pushed through it, and that ability to push through and continue to work hard without giving up is really what defines a Royal Regiment musician.” And the Liszt of all the exemplary qualities of the RBHS Royal Regiment as a whole? Well, it could go on and on, as long as their reputation as the best concert, marching, anything band Southern California has ever seen. ¢ Susan Shen is a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School. P
attie Conway’s career as a real estate broker spans over twentyfive years. She received her real estate license in 1988 and began working in the Oceanside real estate market. Her job and personal life took her further south to Sabre Springs where she has had close ties to the 92128 community for over twenty years. “We have brought up our kids here since 1992,” stated Pattie. She also had a long career at Pardee Homes working as a specialist in the marketing and sales of newly constructed homes in Sabre Springs and other San Diego communities. “I was fortunate to have a twenty-year career with Pardee Homes and sold homes in Sabre Springs,
“
Carmel Valley, Pacific Highlands Ranch, and Westwood,” shared Pattie. After retiring from her job at Pardee Homes in 2011, Pattie joined her husband, Dan and his team at Dan Conway & Associates. Today, she is an asset to the group, bringing experience and knowledge to offer her clients the best possible experience. “[I] help buyers find the home of their dreams and help sellers sell their homes and move on with a smooth transition,” said Pattie. n mid-December, The Remington Club hosted the Rancho Bernardo Senior Services Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. Whiney Southwick was invited to speak about the importance of volunteering, being an avid volunteer himself for many years. Fifty-five people were in attendance and it was a fantastic affair. The volunteers that were honored offer many different services. There were thirty-seven drivers that pick up meals at Pomerado hospital and deliver them to home bound seniors, three attorneys that provide twenty minutes of free legal consultations, and volunteers that provide free tax preparation, notaries, nurses, office volunteers and more. The Remington Club wanted to express their gratefulness at the luncheon and showed how much they appreciate what the volunteers do for their seniors and community. Located in 92128, The Remington Club offers the finest in independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing services, as well as outpatient therapy. ¢

A Soda and Two Straws In honor of Valentine’s Day, we had couples from 92128 submit their stories of how they met and fell in love.
Hal and Althea Altenbern Hal Altenbern – “On Oct. 11, 1947, I was working the stockroom at Sears & Roebuck. The stockroom phone rang; the voice of a young girl requested a tricycle be brought down to the toy department for a customer. Normally, I would have a stock boy do the deliveries, but I wanted to do this one myself, because hers was the voice of an angel. When I brought it over, it was love at first sight. I introduced myself and she told me her name was Althea. I later sent my stock boy back with a note, asking her to join me for a chocolate soda at Andes Candy, and she said yes. I used my thirty-five cents for the street car home, and instead bought one chocolate soda with two straws. I walked home knowing I was going to marry this angel.”
Rob and Randy Weinberg Rob Weinberg – “We met on New York’s subway after a baseball game and were pressed close together by the crowd. Randy’s freckles were visible. This conversation really happened: “May I play connect the dots with your freckles?” “Are you an axe murderer?” “No.” “Well, you weren’t sweating when you said that, so I guess it’s okay.” I hadn’t realized that twenty years earlier Randy’s friend had chased her with a pen trying to connect those same dots. I walked Randy home from the subway, stopping for a beer and talking until 4:30 a.m. We’ve been inseparable since, and celebrate twenty-five years of marriage this summer.”

Vince and Lynn Kramer Vince Kramer – “My friend Frank asked me to invite Lynn to his club for a dance. He also asked Lynn if she would like to go to the dance with me. Lynn said she didn’t go on blind dates. Frank persisted and she finally said yes, but she would meet me at the club (in case she didn’t like me, so she should could leave.) We met at the dance and all went so well that we decided to continue the evening after the club closed. Lynn and I found a small cocktail lounge that had a three-piece band. I ordered drinks and we started to dance. Suddenly, the band grabbed their instruments and started running out the door. I asked what was wrong and they said the place was on fire and we should get out. I grabbed my money off the bar, we went outside and watched the place burn. I told Lynn she was a hot blond! Six months later, we were honeymooning at Mount Airy Lodge in the Pocono Mountains.”
Mel and Rhoda Mones Rhoda Mones – “It was dress rehearsal in high school for a ‘period’ play with long costumes. Half of us were waiting backstage while the director worked with another group, and we were hot and tired. I spied a tall, empty trash container in the corner and hitched myself up to perch on the end of it. Someone walked by, brushed against my legs (which did not reach the floor), and I folded up – half in and half out of the container, unable to move. Along came Mel, a cast member I didn’t know. He rescued me, pulled me out, and that’s how we met!” ¢

:::: FACES IN THE CROWD Honorary Mayor of Rancho Bernardo, Alex Monroe Makes it His Mission to Stay Involved by MICHELLE TREMBLAY photos by Spark Photography
A
lex Monroe was raised in North County, so he is no stranger to San Diego. But after being away for some time (he and his family have just recently relocated to Solana Beach from Santa Fe, NM) he has a newfound appreciation for the city he grew up in. Now, as he takes on his new role as Honorary Mayor of Rancho Bernardo, Monroe’s passion to keep his community thriving is stronger than ever. Monroe and his wife have two children, Jack (5) and Emerson (3), with another baby boy due this spring. The family has resided in Solana Beach for the last 2 ½ years, and although they love the area, they are looking to relocate to Rancho Bernardo or 4S Ranch for the sake of Monroe’s job. “As Honorary Mayor of Rancho Bernardo, I serve as an ambassador for the community. I will be welcoming new businesses, speaking at different events within the community, and promoting Rancho Bernardo as a place to live and work,” he shared. Monroe – who graduated from the University of Redlands with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Economics and Government – works hard to maintain a connection with his community. “There are two groups that I am very active with outside of work: the first is the Rancho Bernardo Business Association,” stated Monroe. “I am also a member of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club. I enjoy

participating in community service projects and Rotary is an amazing organization to belong to.” As a staunch believer in supporting education Monroe also volunteers with the San Diego Literacy Council. “It is an amazing organization that helps individuals from young to old develops their reading skills,” he explained. When asked what the most rewarding part about his involvement with the community, Monroe replied: “It is absolutely the people. There are so many unique and incredible individuals in Rancho Bernardo. I encourage everybody to take time to really get to know one another and you will discover some amazing stories.” ¢

Why You Should Buy Your New Home Before 2014
If
you’re in the market to buy a home, the last quarter of 2013 is the time to do it. Why? Because interest rates are still at historic lows! Interest rates on fixed-rate loans are still appealing, and experts say it’s still cheaper to buy than rent. Some Lenders are also a little more lax with their loan qualification requirements this year. It’s cheaper to buy than rent. According to a 2012 Trulia Trends® study, “buying a home is 44 percent cheaper than renting in the 100 largest metro areas in the United States.” There is a significant price difference in total monthly costs with the lower interest rates. We’re currently in a buyers’ market – consider the benefits of buying a home instead. Even though home prices are creeping up, in certain neighborhoods, they have remained much lower than five years ago. Housing price trends vary significantly by location and even by neighborhood. It may be easier to get a mortgage. Credit unions and banks may be making it easier for some prospective buyers to qualify for a mortgage. Less stringent requirements and qualifying criteria may help some people finally get that home loan.
There is less competition from investors looking to buy and flip houses. Housing prices in some markets are increasing, making house flipping less attractive. This gives prospective homebuyers more inventory to choose from and the benefit of having less pressure to close a deal because of another pending offer. It’s time to invest in your future. Buying a home gives you a chance to start building equity, and investing in your future. If you sell your home in five or ten years, you should profit from the sale and invest that money elsewhere. If you’ve been dealing with rising rent or the hassles of costly moves, settling into a home can stabilize your housing expenses. Call us and we can make it happen! ¢
