About Last Night

T

Derrick Breaux Publisher

here’s nothing quite like a good party. It is often the end result of a lot of work and preparation. The reward. A gathering of friends, business associates, family, coworkers – many people coming together that share something in common. As I write this issue’s note, I find myself with a little extra hop in my step and a smile on my face. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that today is a Friday – and the end of a long and productive week. But what’s really on my mind is last night’s ZCode Magazines’ epic party! With the launch of our eleventh publication, 08/10 Magazine, covering the North Carlsbad zip codes of 92008 and 92010, we decided to make the official announcement with a grand celebration – ZCode style. And we felt that the iconic Carlsbad Flower Fields was the perfect venue – the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn made for a very cool setting. So why was last night’s party so great? Was it the fact that we were blessed to have over 300 guests ranging from local business owners, politicians, and school officials to friends and family members of the ZCode Team? You bet it was! Last night was not only a night to celebrate the launch of 08/10 Magazine, but it was a celebration of community in general. You see, it is my belief that most of the people that live in North San Diego County live here by choice and not necessity. The vast majority of our neighbors are proud to live in their community. In fact, they love living in their community. It is this bond that makes everything work. It is this bond that makes each of the unique communities of North County so special. I am surrounded by an incredible group of people that make up the ZCode Team. Day in and day out they are in the office busting their butts and working hard to create magazines that we hope people want to read. Everyone has a unique part of the puzzle. It was an amazing experience to see our team mingling and socializing with many of the people that have either been featured in one of the ZCode Magazines or people that are loyal readers of the magazines. Having the ability for the team to connect faces with names, laugh and socialize make it all worth it. There are many moving parts to publishing hyper-local community magazines. First and foremost, it takes the vision, determination, and desire to produce a great product. For that, I would like to give a heartfelt “thank you” to the ZCode crew. Of equal importance is the loyalty of the local residents and advertisers – both of which ZCode Magazines would not exist without. We all need to thank them. So last night we celebrated. We celebrated you. We celebrated community. We celebrated family, friends, and coworkers. We celebrated being the best that we all can be. We celebrated an incredible journey that I like to call PASSION. I want to thank you for being a loyal reader. And thanks for supporting ZCode Magazines and supporting the advertisers that are responsible for delivering this magazine to your mailboxes.

Flapjacks for Friends

RB HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOSTS 9TH ANNUAL PANCAKE FESTIVAL

W

ake up any Sunday morning and you will find many of your neighbors and friends cooking up delicious pancakes on the stove. An easy meal to share, the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society decided to create a Pancake Festival to build awareness of their Society to the community, but it quickly morphed into a fundraiser to honor the military and their families in the community. This Memorial Day weekend marks the 9th Annual Pancake Festival, continuing the tradition of providing a free breakfast for the military and activities that the family can enjoy. According to Jane Harmon, Pancake Festival Chair, approximately 600 to 700 people attend the festival each year. With such staggering numbers, it’s no surprise that the festival itself has grown in size. This year will feature live music from a Dixieland band known as The Dixie Strutters, bounce houses, door prizes, raffles, and of course, food. One of their most popular activities is tile painting. “This year, we brought back tile painting, so our community members can become a permanent part of the recorded history of Rancho Bernardo,” said Jane. With all the festivities, Jane reflected on the true purpose of their festival. “My personal favorite part of the festival is honoring the military with a free breakfast to say thank you, honoring an incredible military person, and posting the photos on the Wall of Honor of any military, active or past,” she described. Join the community on May 24 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Bernardo Winery, and have your fill of pancakes in honor of the military in your life. Tickets are $7 per person

(free for children under age 3) and free for veterans and active military personnel. Veterans and military are encouraged to bring their military photos to be scanned and placed on the Wall of Honor at the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society. ¢

Conserve, Conserve, Conserve! By SUPERVISOR DAVE ROBERTS

The

vote by the San Diego County Water Authority’s Board of Directors in February was unanimous and the message was clear: conserve, conserve, conserve. Drought conditions in parts of California are as bad as they have been in a century. As the county’s representative to the Water Authority, I joined my colleagues from twenty-four member agencies in support of furthering conservation. The directors’ vote initiated the agency’s Water Shortage and Drought Response Plan to conserve as much stored water as possible so it can be made available where it is needed most. Last activated in 2007, the plan is designed to preserve the water held in storage and to minimize the impacts of supply challenges. The board also approved alerting all of its member agencies that the region is at Level 1 Drought Watch. That means that water district officials must identify specific actions necessary for their communities, such as repairing leaks quickly, limiting irrigation to the evening and early-morning hours and expanding use of recycled and non-potable water. As we lay plans to conserve, we can feel good about our track

16 • 92128Magazine.com • May | June 2014

record. San Diego County has reduced its water consumption by 27% since 2007, even though our population has increased. The Water Authority, to its credit, has greatly expanded the county’s storage capacity and has made capital investments and negotiated agreements to diversify the sources of our water portfolio. Since January, when I took over as the county’s water board representative, I have toured the Colorado River Aqueduct and the Sacramento/San Joaquin Bay Delta. Those trips drove home an important point: that most of the water we consume travels great distances, and at great cost, to reach us. And when water flows from our faucets, it’s no accident. To maintain our quality of life for our homes, businesses and farms, we must continue to diversify our supplies and to expand water recycling and reuse. And of course, conservation is key. To learn more about how to conserve water visit the Water Authority’s website at www.sdcwa.org. ¢ Dave Roberts represents the Third District on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

GOLFING QUEST ERIC SUGIMOTO’S SIGHTS ARE SET by BILL STEWART photos by Tyler McElhaney

U

sually, one of the most difficult decisions college students must make is choosing a career they want to pursue. For Eric Sugimoto, it was easy. He took up golf at the age of eight and spent the next twelve years developing skills he believes will give him a realistic shot at achieving his goal of being a professional golfer. Eric grew up in Rancho Bernardo and learned golfing basics from his father, Masao Sugimoto, at Bernardo Heights Country Club where his dad has been the men's club champion ten out of the last eleven years. "I love spending time on the golf course, whether it's playing a round of golf or just practicing," Eric said. "I enjoy every moment I'm out there, doing everything I can to make my dream of playing on the PGA Tour a reality. "As a kid, I played a lot of junior golf tournaments all around San Diego," he added, "but it was at Rancho Bernardo High School that I got serious about someday playing professionally."

When he's not in class or playing golf, Eric loves to go ocean fishing with his dad very early in the morning on a half-day trip. "It's a great way for me to relax and escape from any concerns I may have," he said. He also finds time for the beach, for playing basketball with his friends, and for listening to lots of country music. ¢

A Festival of Art

MARANATHA CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS FUSES ART WITH A CARNIVAL

L

ike many other schools, Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) had an annual tradition of displaying the art of their students for family and friends to come see. But this year, the staff decided to break tradition and open the event to the community, throwing a carnival into the mix. On May 17, MCS will be holding their first ArtFest, a raucous event reminiscent of summer fairs complete with food trucks, carnival games, jumpies, live bands, artists, vendors and more. Student art will still be displayed in the gym and little artists can enjoy a sidewalk chalk section. On top of that, admission is free for all. “We have a growing, thriving arts program, and we want to celebrate it with our neighbors,” said Francine Good, Director of Development at MCS. “There is a misconception that art shows are stuffy and boring. We want to break that misconception by showcasing the excitement and joy of the arts.” The arts certainly run deep in the school, as one of MCS’s own 9th graders, Jessica Xu, even designed the logo for the festival. If you or your business are interested in sponsoring the event, head to www.maranathachristianschools.org/support_artfest.php for rates and contact information. ArtFest will last from 2 to 7 p.m. on May 17, located at 9050 Maranatha Drive in 92127. Keep a lookout for next year’s ArtFest as well. “Our gates have opened and this is the beginning of more exciting things to come!” said Francine. “We want this to be a spring destination event for families every year.” ¢

ere at ZCode Media, our employees are like our family, and our magazines and readers are like family too. Carlsbad’s family of publications, including 92009 and 92011 Magazines, is now complete with the introduction of 08/10 Magazine. This past April, ZCode Media held a launch party for the new magazine at the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn amidst the picturesque Carlsbad Flower Fields. With the flowers in full bloom and the guests in full smiles, it was a night to remember. The packed house enjoyed delicious food, scrumptious desserts, and hot-ticket raffle items with over $14,000 in prizes. All $1,060 raised from the raffle went to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The night concluded with a few words from our co-owners, ZCode Media Publisher Derrick Breaux and Creative Director Tyler McElhaney, who premiered a riveting video on our newest addition to the ZCode bunch. Join us in welcoming our newest magazine to the family, 08/10 Magazine. ¢

othing tastes quite as good as a home-cooked meal, but it tastes even better when surrounded by friends and neighbors. Friends and family of Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) were treated to a Pasta Dinner Night fundraiser, to raise money for the RBHS Foundation and the programs they support. RBHS clubs, sports teams, and performers were out in full force selling sweets, flipping for donations, and singing live. Over 500 people came out in support, with a total of $3,940 going towards the teams and groups that were in attendance. “RBHS knows how to throw a pasta party!” said Teri Wyness, the fundraising chair for the RBHS Foundation. “And we’re doing it again next year!” ¢

RBHS SPORTS TWO FANTASTIC GOLF TEAMS photos by Spark Photography

R

ancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) has two hardworking and driven teams devoted to golf. Whether practicing their back-swings between classes or hitting drives on the Bernardo Heights Country Club golf course, these student athletes and their coaches are determined to continue their success streak. Both the boys and girls teams are under the guidance of coaches Richard Deem (boys) and Tim Steigerwald (girls). Both coaches are teachers by trade, which translated well into coaching their favorite sport. When asked about what drew them to coaching at RBHS, both coaches replied with enthusiasm about their students. “I wanted to coach golf because I love the sport and it gives me another opportunity to help kids,” said Coach Steigerwald. Coach Deem reiterated, “What initially drew me to trying to be a part of the golf team was the love of the game and the kids are the best. It is nice to see them outside of the classroom.” Eager to improve their records, both teams are hoping to make it to CIF or perhaps the State Championship this year. Pressure aside, both coaches have instilled a sense of perseverance in their athletes and encourage them to maintain academic excellence while perfecting their technique. “To be the best you can be, you must put in the time to practice and there must be a willingness to learn about the game,” shared Coach Steigerwald. Both boys and girls teams have also turned out athletes beyond the high school level. Eric Sugimoto (our Student Star this issue) an RBHS alumni, will continue his career at USC this year. Todd Baek, another alumni, has played for SDSU and is making his name on the professional circuit. Franklin Huang will continue to play golf at Stanford Unviersity, and Brandon Mai will continue at UCLA. Female athletes to look out for include Tiffany Joh, who played at UCLA and is currently on the LPGA Tour, and Madi Mendiola who is currently playing at Mt. Holyoke. Raquel Ek began her first year at University of Hawaii, and sisters Jessica and Jamie Yam have played for UC Davis and University of Nevada, Reno, respectively. With such a legacy at hand, it’s not hard to see the dedication that has gone into building two great teams. Coaches Steigerwald and Deem credit their success not just to the athletes, but to the parent volunteers and the Bernardo Heights Country Club. “Without their generosity, there is no way we would have enjoyed the success that we have had over the years.” ¢

Preserving Memories Photographer, Pam Davis, Uses Her Talent to Benefit Others by AMY LEHRER | photos by Savoring the Sweet Life Photography

ommunity volunteer, Pam Davis, loves living in Sabre Springs. For the past fifteen years, she’s appreciated the beauty and safety of her neighborhood, taken advantage of the local shops and restaurants, and hiked the many local trails. Her favorites are Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve or the Sea to Sea trail that begins in Torrey Pines and extends through Sabre Springs and ends at the Salton Sea. Pam began taking pictures and designing photo albums in elementary school and hasn’t put the camera down since. She expressed, “My camera is always nearby to capture a beautiful sunrise, the view from a mountain top or the birds and flowers in my own backyard.” Twelve years ago Pam began photographing charity events for schools, scouts, churches, the military and foundations like NaturVet. For local theatre groups and schools, she captures free head shots for each actor so the groups can publish their programs. She also provides photographs of the shows to help the actors create their portfolios.

Pam Davis Sabre Springs I’m the owner, photographer, artist at Savoring the Sweet Life Photography, specializing in weddings and fun portraits of couples, family, children, newborn, maternity and high school seniors. Husband – Mike; Son – Matt (20) Photography, hiking, geocaching, travel, theatre, blogging (you’ll find her daily photo blog at www.savoringthesweetlifeblog.com)

Five years ago Pam added event photography. “I’m proud that I can use one of my gifts to benefit others,” she explained. She captures portraits of contributors as they arrive on the red carpet for organizations like The American Heart Association, Susan G. Komen Pink for the Cure and Kids on the Block. The American Heart Association, for instance, sends the portraits Pam creates to its contributors to thank them and encourage future participation. She also provides portraits of each event for use in press releases and advertising. Pam has plenty of advice for aspiring photographers. Practice daily, evaluate each photo for improvement, master camera manual settings, read photography books and blogs and complete on-line tutorials. Then, once photography is mastered, consider volunteering. Pam shared, “My life is so much richer because of the events I’ve attended, the people I’ve met and the help I’ve been able to give!” Pam has been married to her husband Mike for twenty-nine years and has a son, Matt, who is a junior in college studying theatre design and engineering. They all enjoy their two goofy poodles, spending time together, traveling, hiking and keeping up with the latest technology. In her spare time, Pam enjoys blogging photos of her latest adventures, hiking, geocaching (treasure hunting with a GPS) and traveling. She’s visited seventeen different countries and thirty states and plans to visit many more places in the future with her loved ones. ¢

IMPROVING THEIR WORLD The Bulkin Family Dreams Big and Achieves Success by LINDA FRABL | photos by Spark Photography

T

he goal for parents is to instill a drive to succeed in their children, and a sense of doing what is right. Anatoly and Nelly Bulkin, Russian and Ukrainian immigrants who have lived in the Trails of Rancho Bernardo neighborhood for the past ten years, have indeed done that for their offspring – Alex, 18, Michael, 16, and twins Sophie and Lola, both 9. As Nelly proclaimed, “Our kids are first generation Americans and we always emphasize that they need to do better and achieve more than we did.” The twin girls are already on their way; both eagerly participate in Girl Scout activities that benefit the community. In addition, Sophie plays competitive soccer and has just joined the 4S Arsenal team, whereas Lola adores dancing and is taking numerous classes at Step by Step Dance. As for the boys, Alex has been a four year varsity basketball player at Del Norte High School, and has been honored by the Fraternity of Academic and Civic Excellence (FACE). His brother Michael, a sophomore at Del Norte High School, is a varsity wrestler, and still maintains his 4.5 GPA while taking four AP classes.

You’ve probably heard about the 3V movement (Vigilance, Valor and Victory), the organization that aims to deter bullying and encourage teen leadership. Thank Alex and Michael for that, as they are two of the three founding members. To promote the 3V message, they speak to local schools, do radio campaigns and organize widelypublicized events. Anatoly admitted, “We teach our children to dream big and work to be the best version of themselves.” Practicing what he preaches, Anatoly, a vascular surgeon, started the Vascular Care Foundation, a nonprofit organization that educates and provides vascular screening and “WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO care for those DREAM BIG AND WORK TO BE THE whose insurance BEST VERSION OF THEMSELVES.” won’t cover the services. Nelly, who holds a Masters degree in Health Services, is an active realtor who doesn’t need to be asked twice to extoll the virtues of the 92128 lifestyle. As for their beloved neighborhood, the whole family especially enjoys the ample hiking possibilities. Nelly stated, "We love the lush green foliage and the feeling of space.” As an avid mountain biker and runner, Anatoly concurred, “We take advantage of the many trails and recreational areas, especially the pool at the RB Swim and Tennis Club.” So whether the Bulkins are swimming, hiking, dancing or doing team sports, they remain committed to improving the world around them. ¢

Halstrom Academy Provides Students with Individualized and Flexible Learning Options

H

alstrom Academy was started in 1985 by Karen Bishop, an educator who wanted to create a more personalized and flexible approach to learning for students who have unique circumstances, such as actors, athletes, students with ADD, ADHD or social anxiety and students who wish to learn at their own pace and accelerate their learning. Flexible scheduling options and the 1:1 student teacher ratio differentiate Halstrom from the traditional school model. Students who attend Halstrom Academy are given the opportunity to become self-directed learners, creative problem solvers, effective communicators and active participants in their communities while they prepare for successful college and working careers. According to Halstrom Academy San Diego, they offer robust college preparatory and Advanced Placement programs, as well as 1:1 SAT preparation, college counseling and tutoring. As stated by Halstrom educators, the school provides a small, caring environment that fosters strong three-way communication between parents, students and teachers. This communication allows students to flourish in an educational model that is tailored specifically to their individual needs and learning styles. Technology is a large part of Halstrom’s commitment to enhancing student and teacher communication. Both students and teachers use iPads that are loaded with eTextbooks and other educational applications. According to Halstrom Academy, technology can help teachers provide students with real life examples to make material more relevant. For example, it is not unusual for literature teachers to use visual arts, movies and/or music to complement the core curriculum. The student population at Halstrom San Diego is comprised of young entrepreneurs, community volunteers, strong leaders and professional athletes. Jacob Szekely is an excellent example of a student athlete who directly benefits from the flexibility offered by Halstrom Academy. “What I really like about Halstrom is the 1:1 teaching and how they are able to cater to my needs as a professional athlete,” said Jacob, 2013 National Scholastic Surfing Association West Coast Men’s Champion. According to Jacob, attending Halstrom has allowed him to receive a top-notch education, as well as to focus on his professional surfing career.

The RB Chorale Has Been Singing Their Way into the Hearts of 92128 for 40 Years

Forty years ago, a small group of music and vocal enthusiasts started meeting in Pat and Bruce Bean’s Rancho Bernardo living room to sing and practice choral performances. Starting with just sixteen members, the RB Chorale of today consistently enlists the abilities of 140+ members (including some of the original singers) each semester season. With the popularity of the group’s performances, the RB Chorale has been able to develop a scholarship program for young performers and consistently sponsors local singers with thousands of dollars to help further their education and careers as vocalists. We talked with Pat Bean, the founder and director of the RB Chorale about the history of the organization and what we have to look forward to this summer.

92128’S MOSTRA COFFEE TEAMS UP WITH ALESMITH BREWING CO.

C

ountless 92128 residents jump out of bed in the morning and head for a nice steaming mug of coffee to help wake them up. Well, have you imagined a dash of coffee in a favorite beer? The folks at Rancho Bernardo’s Mostra Coffee and AleSmith Brewing Co. came together to create the Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Speedway Stout brew, with the coffee ingredient described as “very balanced” and “chocolatey.” Jelynn Sophia, Co-Founder of Mostra Coffee, was excited to work with AleSmith to craft this unique brew. “We came up with a variety of different roast levels, then cupped each of them to find the perfect one that would work best in the beer,” she explained. “At the end of the day, they took our suggestion and decided to try something totally new, which was infusing cold brew coffee in the beer.” Their collaboration was truly a science and the outcome was great. Due to the success of this new stout, Mostra Coffee is hoping to branch out and collaborate with other businesses in the community. Jelynn hopes to find a retail location soon, but is happy to continue providing their specialty blends in their “pop-up coffee shops” around the community. Mostra Coffee holds a special place in their hearts for Rancho Bernardo. “Four out of five of Mostra’s owners went to Rancho Bernardo High School,” said Jelynn. “We all made our way back to our old 92127/92128 neighborhood and felt very strongly about giving back to the community that gave us so much!” Mostra Coffee can be found on Facebook (www.facebook.com/mostracoffee), Instagram (@official_mostracoffee),

Carry On, Carry On

An Open Letter to the Class of 2014

C

lass of 2014: let us #throwback to all we have accomplished. As a whole, we have taken top placements in a myriad of regional and state competitions for sports and academics. Our fingertips drip with the memory of bubbling in our ID numbers on countless standardized tests. Priceless friendships have formed over these past four years, on these blue-and-silver grounds. We have also suffered through hard times. Our eyes bear past and present marks of sadness and anger over lost ones, defeats, moments of despair. Collectively, we share a veritable history of hurt, but more often than not, we wipe the grime and sweat from our eyes, square our shoulders, and continue forth on this long journey. However, we have reached a break in the predictable road of high school. All along, we have been ushered along by those older and wiser than we are. Our decisions take on the flavor of what they have said. Whenever we metaphorically scrape our knees, there will be someone who will throw us a couple of Band-Aids. All that changes when we go to college. Who in this unfamiliar crowd will help us when we encounter roadblocks? The renewed prospect of failure is daunting – after all, we have quantified failure for most of our lives: an F on our progress notice, a crushing loss at CIF Championships, perhaps a lifetime of “do you want fries

with that” with substandard salaries, or some other occupation that society has trodden upon. We fear failure, in its many ugly-headed forms, and that fear causes us to step back from both danger and opportunity. However, if we are to find that meaning in life – a question that I’m sure keeps you up at night – we must understand that failure is inevitable. So then, how do we deal with the sense of hopelessness that can only be momentarily assuaged by a gallon of ice cream and a binge-watch of House of Cards? As Miles Halter says in Looking for Alaska, we teenagers need “never to be hopeless because we can never be broken . . . that part of us greater than the sum of our parts cannot begin and cannot end, and so it cannot fail.” I have often wondered what that “part” is, but I have realized that it is the part of us that constantly yearns for something beyond what we are right now. As long as we keep on trying to succeed and fulfill that desire to become something better, we really cannot fail. It is not quite #yoloswag, but it is more of a #carpediem. Seize the day, my friends, because no matter what happens, we are shining stars and we are invincible. ¢ Susan Shen is a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School. trawberry season is here! This beloved red fruit is a favorite among San Diegans, served on plates and in recipes new and old. But for every recipe, you’ll want fresh strawberries to serve, and it doesn’t get much “fresher” than handpicked strawberries straight from the field. This season, grab your friends and family and head to one of San Diego’s strawberry farms, where you can pick as many berries as your strawberry heart desires. Driving north on the I-5, it’s hard to miss the vast strawberry field nestled in the hills of Carlsbad off Cannon Rd. This is home to The Carlsbad Strawberry Company, who invite groups as small as a couple to as large as school groups and organizations to come pick strawberries for themselves. Venture into the field with your friends and family for a lovely summer getaway. With groups of fifteen or more, they recommend you call ahead at 760-603-9608 for more information. The fields are open Monday through Friday, and picking is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit their website for farm stand locations and directions at www.carlsbadstrawberrycompany.com. Out east in Temecula is Kenny’s Strawberry Farm, where their strawberries are grown hydroponically. There’s no need to worry about dirt or mud, as the strawberries are elevated above the ground to where even small children can reach. The farm is open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and you can visit their website to keep up-to-date with crop conditions at www.temeculavalleystrawberryfarms.com. ¢

What causes oral cancer? What causes oral cancer? Scientists aren’t sure of the exact cause. While smoking and tobacco use are still major risk factors, the fastest growing segment of oral cancer patients is young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals due to the connection to the HPV virus. We cannot stop this virus from spreading. In fact if not diagnosed and treated in its early stages, oral cancer can spread, leading to chronic pain, loss of oral function, irreparable facial and oral disfigurement following surgery, and even death. For this reason, it’s important to regularly visit your dentist so he or she can perform a thorough screening for oral cancer. How do dentists screen for cancer? Your dentist will screen for oral cancer during routine checkups. During the screening, he or she will feel for lumps or irregular tissue changes in your neck, head, cheeks, and oral cavity and will thoroughly examine the soft tissues in your mouth, specifically looking for sores or discolored tissues.

omen around San Diego gathered together for a week of discussion on health, finance, family and more. Throughout the week, speakers such as Tina Mickelson and Mimi Kirk spoke on balancing work with family and health, and Operation Ball Gown collected gently used gowns for donation to military wives who needed them. The week concluded with an Inspiration Conference held at the Harrah’s Rincon Casino and Resort. Attendees were treated to truly inspiring speeches from figures such as Kim Coles, Elizabeth Smart, Tanya Brown, Kimberly Dozier, Kristen Kavanaugh, Piper Kerman, and Suzanne Somers. Panels of admirable women discussed topics such as finding resilience in the workplace with “High Heels Through the Glass Ceiling” and reaching for higher goals in “Coffee With the Corner Office.” Visit www.sdwomensweek.com for a complete list of the speakers who were in attendance. ¢

he Ed Brown Senior Center is a staple of the elderly community in San Diego. To raise money for the facility, Oakwood Escrow, a Rancho Bernardo based independent escrow company, was a proud partner of the SuperBOWL 2014. Eighty bowling teams competed in a friendly fashion and the winning team, the Bawlers, won the highest team score with 690. In addition to the money raised by participating teams, auction prizes including a stay at the Rancho Bernardo Inn and a LUSH gift basket raised additional funds for the Ed Brown Senior Center. Angie Stanley, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Oakwood Escrow, declared the SuperBOWL a success. “This year’s SuperBOWL event brought the community together to support a great cause. The money raised will benefit the senior community in the Greater San Diego area, and we are proud to have been part of such a wonderful event.” ¢

Service to the Blind

THE RB LIONS CLUB CELEBRATES 50 YEARS photo provided by Rancho Bernardo Lions Club

On

June 27, 1964 a group of Rancho Bernardo residents and caretakers came together to form the Rancho Bernardo branch of the Lions Club. They joined one of the largest worldwide volunteer service organizations, with a membership of well over one million people. The RB Lions, as they are also known, are now celebrating fifty years of their charter and continue to live by the challenge that Helen Keller set upon them, “to become the knights of the blind and crusade against darkness.” The RB Lions Club has maintained a strong presence, especially through their White Cane Foundation which has raised over $400,00 to specific sight projects in addition to their monthly support to local blind centers. On each annual World Service Day for the Blind, the Lions visit sight-impaired guests from San Diego Center for the Blind. All funding has come from community supported projects. The RB Lions also work in tangent with the youth of the community, through the Rancho Bernardo High School and Bernardo Heights Middle School students, known as the Leos Club. These students have made blankets, collected used eyeglasses, and placed floral wreaths on soldiers’ graves on Memorial Day. In fact, the weekend before Memorial Day 2014, the Leos will once again visit Rosecrans Cemetery to lay wreaths across recently fallen soldiers in honor of their service. The RB Lions Club are excited for their 50th Anniversary Celebration on June 20 at Casa de las Campanas. Supervisor Dave

Roberts will be attending to present a Proclamation of Fifty Years being chartered in Rancho Bernardo. “On the occasion of this 50th Anniversary Celebration we would like to thank the Rancho Bernardo community for these years of recognition and support of our efforts to assist the less fortunate among us,” said RB Lions 2nd Vice President Frank Terschan, “and we ask for your continuing encouragement and support as we are evident in our gold and purple vests requesting your help, living our motto: We Serve.” Learn more about the RB Lions at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/san_diego_rancho_bernardo. ¢

92128 new energy in

Gwen Leslie Works to Improve and Strengthen the CMR/SS Rec Center by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Spark Photography

A

lthough it may sound ironic, Gwen Leslie understands that recreation is hard work. As the chairperson for the Carmel Mountain Ranch/Sabre Springs Recreation Council, Gwen is the woman who helps ensure the Rec Center and its programming continue to grow and strengthen in everything from the Easter Egg Hunt to the adult sports leagues. Gwen can be found running the monthly meetings, working with the Parks and Rec Administration, and voicing the community’s concerns. That voice, Gwen believes, is one of the greatest keys to a unified community. “We have new energy and are using this to bring more personality to our existing Rec Center and the activities and amenities it has to offer,” Gwen explained. The Rec Council recently grew from five to nine members, but “there is room for more,” Gwen stated. For her, it’s about highlighting and providing the best these communities have to offer. The range of activities in a friendly, family oriented community drew Gwen to both Carmel Mountain Ranch and the Rec Council. “I wanted to ensure that my kids had a great experience in all of the activities they took part in, so naturally I got involved,” Gwen shared. She is a native Californian, who grew up in the suburbs of LA, and attended CSU Long Beach and Claremont Graduate University. Post college, Gwen taught for eleven years before moving into her new position as “Director of Residential Affairs for the Leslie family,” she joked. Gwen, her husband, Scott, and their three boys, Nathaniel, Nicholas, and Matthew, settled in the community nine years ago. Gwen ensures to carve a little time for herself, as well: she loves a good book and a little down time with a cup of coffee, sunshine, and the smell of fresh flowers. As a member of two book clubs, she admits those are just for her – socially and intellectually. Finding time to volunteer amidst a busy schedule isn’t easy, but for Gwen it is a priority. She is involved in a variety of local organizations, from the Rec Council to Shoal Creek Elementary PTA and the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She enjoys the creative side and developing experiences and opportunities that will inspire kids and families. “If I can leave a small piece of me, and share my gifts and talents with others, then I have made a difference,” Gwen shared. ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

The Bull Perspective on Housing in 92128

T

he 2013 San Diego Housing Summary can be summarized in two separate six month intervals. During the first half of 2013, low inventory and low interest rates created bidding wars pushing home prices upward. During the second half, the frenzy subsided because of sudden interest rate hikes. Mortgage delinquencies have dropped, and the worst of the distressed housing problem appears to be over. The economy is trending upward and unemployment is trending downward. What can we expect for 2014? Low inventories have always supported rising prices and once inventories gradually stabilize, pricing should return to

New home construction is at fifty year low, enticing builders to start construction – and we’ve seen this unfolding. Building permits approved in San Diego County have risen 43% since 2012. November 2013 saw more permits issued since the recovery in 2008. Finally, we’ve been seeing a trend regarding sellers. The Baby Boomers are moving down into smaller retirement homes and the Millennials are moving up into their dream homes, to raise their families and build equity. It’s a great time to be a seller! traditional levels. With these rising prices more homeowners have returned to positive equity. Meanwhile, mortgage rates, while a little bit higher, are still historically low. Moreover, with the advent of rising home prices lenders may loosen credit standards and make loans more affordable.

Globe Guilders Celebrate Couture 92128 RESIDENT ORGANIZES FASHION SHOW FOR CHARITY Fashion show photo by Gates Photography (www.gatesphotography.com)

L

inda Van Vark, a 92128 resident for forty-five years, has been president of Globe Guilders auxiliary since 2011. Created in 1955 to support the Old Globe’s artistic and education programs, Linda leads a dynamic group of San Diego women and devotes her time to the Old Globe and the Guilders’ mission. As president, Linda’s plate is pretty full. She serves on the board of the Old Globe Theatre, leads the Globe Guilders Executive and Steering committees, and raises awareness and funding for the theatre’s artistic, educational and community outreach programs. But one of Linda’s many, and favorite, duties is to organize the annual Celebrating Couture Fashion Show. This year marks their twenty-fourth year of the fashion show, and it remains to be one of their top fundraising events of the year. In partnership with Neiman Marcus, and with fashion provided by famous couture designer Naeem Khan, attendees can enjoy a night of fashion, food, and fun. “The fashions are spectacular. Some ladies really go all out! It’s very rewarding to see so many ladies and gentleman come out to support the Old Globe Theatre,” Linda remarked. The Celebrating Couture Fashion Show 2014 will be held at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel on May 9. The event opens with a champagne reception at 10 a.m. and includes silent and live auctions, followed by a lunch that culminates with the fashion show, presented by designer Naeem Khan. View his collections at www.naeemkhan.com.

Reservations can be made by phone at 619-889-7121 or online at www.globeguilders.org/fashionshow. Tickets start at $115, including a champagne reception, lunch and the fashion show. Linda references her mother as the inspiration for her active work with the Globe Guilders. “She spoke so enthusiastically about the Old Globe Theatre, it inspired me to get involved. I grew up going to Balboa Park and the Old Globe Theatre – I want it to be around forever.” ¢
