:::: FROM THE PUBLISHER

South of the Border has Evolved

I

went to high school and grew up in North San Diego County. Having moved from Texas, I thought that I had hit the jackpot. San Diego had the beaches, the mountains, the desert, SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, La Jolla, Los Angeles – all at our fingertips. But there was one other place that was also a gem, especially in my college years. It was Mexico! Long before the recent negative publicity that Mexico experienced, I was making regular trips south of the border. During spring breaks in Rosarito Beach there were more Americans walking the town than Mexicans. During other times of the year, it was not uncommon to make a last minute decision to head to Puerto Nuevo (commonly referred to as “Lobster Village”) for a day trip to feast on fresh Pacific lobster, warm tortillas, rice and beans, and cold beverages. We could be sitting at the table in about an hour and a half if driving from North County. For the more determined, Ensenada was also a very easy day trip. These were good times. Things were much more simple back then. When I met my wife Jessica in the ‘90s, I was introduced to a different part of Mexico. She had been making the trek down to San Felipe for nearly her entire life. Her father had built a home right on the beach in a remote area slightly south of San Felipe as a result of being involved in the Baja 1000 when he was younger. As Jessica and I began our life together and started making the regular trips to San Felipe, I started becoming part of many of her family’s “Mexico” traditions. Carpooling was encouraged – not necessarily for safety reasons; it was simply more fun. There were certain gas stations that you stopped at. There was a specific route that was taken, and a couple of restroom stops (always the same spots). If we were driving in a group, everyone tried to stay together on the five hour commute. When available, walkie-talkies were used (that always added an extra element to the trip). All of this culminated at the Derrick Breaux most anticipated stop of the day – downtown San Felipe, where the fish tacos, Publisher tortas, and ice cold beer signified that we were now on vacation. With full bellies, we would finish the last 30-minute leg of the drive and arrive at my father-in-law’s beautiful slice of beachfront paradise on the Sea of Cortez. Over the years, we have watched Mexico evolve. The horror stories that you see on the news or hear about from “friends of friends” don’t seem to have been a reality – at least in our parts of Mexico near San Diego. However, there is one reality – many Americans simply stopped going. Spring break is now just like any other week in San Felipe. You no longer see the packs of American teenagers and young adults partying at the hot spots and beaches. It’s slower paced. It’s quite peaceful. We recently went down to the house in San Felipe for spring break. It was a quiet trip. We stopped in town for fish tacos per tradition, then spent the next several days doing nothing. By doing nothing, what I mean is we spent our time relaxing, watching our kids play with their cousin nonstop from sunup to sundown in the sand on the beach. We fished. We cooked. We had happy hour – San Felipe style, of course. We were visited by friends from Del Sur. We played board games and cards after dinner (a few house favorites are Mexican Train, Drunk Mexican Poker, and Spoons). There were no moans and groans from the kids of being hungry or bored. In fact, we had to drag our kids to the table for dinner, at which time they consumed quantities of food that I had never seen them eat before. What 10-year-old kid eats four burritos at a single sitting? Once upon a time, the slower paced (let’s call it relaxing) experience wouldn’t have really worked for me. I’ve always been the type to be on the go. I didn’t completely understand the “sitting around” thing. Now I do. I suppose that means I’ve evolved as well.

SANITY-SAVING

TIPS FOR MOM by SRAVANTHI TRIPURANENI, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo

Moms become expert jugglers – housecleaning, feeding the baby, working, carpooling, playing chauffeur. Wearing all these hats can make everyday life hectic. Fortunately, there are ways to stay calm, sane, and stress-free in the midst of normal family chaos. Short of building a futuristic robot that does everything from cooking and cleaning to making sure the kids get to school, these nine tips should help.

Drink plenty of water. Mild dehydration can affect your body before you realize you are thirsty. Lack of water can cause headaches, fatigue, and lack of energy.

Stay away from those golden cream-filled sponge cakes. When you’re tired and hungry it’s easy to reach for unhealthy snacks. Keep up your energy by trying to eat something every two to four hours and selecting nutritious snacks, such as string cheese, fruit, and cut-up veggies. Eating foods with low nutritional value will only add to your stress and your mood swings.

Get out of the house. Even if you are exhausted, go outside for a rejuvenating walk because fresh air and exercise can help put everything in perspective.

Let out your creative self. Create something each day, even if it is just a doodle. This will help you stay connected to yourself.

Laugh. Whether giggling or guffawing, laughter is good for you and your family. Laughter reduces your stress by increasing the endorphins to your brain and relaxing your muscles. It should be easy to find humor in the antics of your little ones.

Be grateful. Try writing down three things every day for which you are thankful. Having an attitude of gratitude provides perspective and brings you to the present.

Take time for yourself. Understand that you most likely won’t finish everything on your “To Do” list – ever. So take time each day to do whatever you like. Some moms wake up before the family to read and enjoy a cup of uninterrupted coffee or tea. You may choose to carve out some time to meditate, take a bath, or simply listen to music. Make sure your family understands that this is “mommy’s time.”

Play with your kids. Have some stress relievers you can do with your children, such as drawing, blowing bubbles, dancing, and playing with pets. Stroking the cat, feeding hay to the bunny, playing catch at the park with the dog, or even watching fish glide in an aquarium can reduce stress and can also teach your children to care for others. Raising a family has its challenges, but learning to relax and giving up the idea of perfection will let you and your children enjoy the ride, bumps and all. 

Ask for support. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others for support, even if that is as simple as calling a friend or checking out a blog. Arrange for a babysitting swap with friends or ask a trusted family member to watch the little ones while you exercise or get some sleep.

Looking for a new doctor? To find a Scripps physician near you call 858-500-3148 or visit www.scripps.org/92128. 14 • 92128Magazine.com • May | June 2015

N

atalie Nieman knows and trusts in life a bit beyond her 15 years. The 92128 resident has learned much through her life experiences, helping her grow as a dancer, student, and young woman.

Name: School: Grade: Parents: Sibling: Favorite Place in 92128:

Natalie Nieman (15) Rancho Bernardo High School 10 Bill and Vanessa Nieman Thomas Nieman (19) Bernardo Winery because that’s where my dance company practices in an on-site theater!

Ten years ago, Natalie discovered her passion for dance, studying ballet, tap, modern, contemporary, and jazz at the Center for Creative Arts in Poway. This turned out to be great physical therapy for the young girl who did not start walking until the age of two due to a lack of muscle tone from her hips down through her ankles and feet. As she progressed both in strength and

expertise, Natalie moved into competition, dancing for Danceology Performance Company and Prodigy Dance Company. Today Natalie has found a second home with the Mojalet Dance Collective. She joined the company in Fall 2013 and felt an immediate connection. Shifting away from competition and towards modern dance, Natalie appreciates the opportunity to diversify. “Dancing in this style has increased my strength in a different way than my earlier classical and competition training. You have to control your body in different ways, which has been fun to learn,” she shared. Natalie also credits the dance director, Faith Jensen-Ismay, for being a great inspiration. “I have learned so much not only about dance and technique, but about enjoying what you do and showing it through your movement. Faith has taught me so much about how winning is not everything and that truly living through what you do is everything,” Natalie acknowledged. A sophomore at Rancho Bernardo High School, Natalie dedicates many hours to both dance and academics. As a member of the Tour de Force, the school’s varsity performance dance team, she performs at all the high school football games and spring basketball games. This is balanced with her heavy load of coursework, including two Honors and one AP class. Drawn to math, she plans to earn a degree in a math-based science and a minor in dance. With her shift in focus away from competition, Natalie recognizes the time not spent competing is the time she can dedicate to homework, family and friends, and her role with Mojalet. Moving forward in her academics, her dance, and her relationships are Natalie’s top priorities. 

hether in the lab playing with molecules or in the garden assisting a senior citizen, Jess Sheu-Gruttadauria connects her passions to her career and her community. “My advice for someone that wants to get more involved in the community is similar to my advice about life in general – find something you are passionate about, find an organization that has a similar mission, and then jump in!” Jess discovered her passion for science at a young age. Growing up in a small community outside Rochester, NY, Jess’s parents served as an early inspiration; her father is a professor of Pharmacology and her mother a chemist with Xerox. She went on to earn a BS in Biochemistry, and today Jess is pursuing her doctorate at The Scripps Research Institute. The decision to relocate to San Diego was driven by her doctorate program, but the choice to live in 92128 was made upon the advice of a co-worker. “We actually chose to move to the 92128 area without visiting first,” Jess shared. The choice was an excellent one. “I love that we can drive 20 to 30 minutes and be at the beach, hiking a mountain, or downtown enjoying something delicious. And at the end of the day we can come home to a wonderfully peaceful, friendly community that has everything we need to live comfortably.” Since arriving in San Diego in 2012, Jess has found a great fit with ElderHelp; the nonprofit organization pairs volunteers with seniors living independently. Jess visits a senior once a week, helping around the home and property. “Although it may seem that I am helping her,

the connection I have made with her and the stories she tells have made an immense and lasting impact on my life,” Jess acknowledged. Also serving on the organization’s board, she is working for greater community outreach. “92128 is a community we would love to get more involved in, so volunteers or seniors looking for a friendly visitor, a helping hand, or a ride – please feel free to contact our offices!” Jess stated. Looking ahead Jess is also excited about growing her connections in the science community. She plans to continue on to postdoctoral work with the goal of becoming a professor at a research university. “Teaching and fostering a love of science in the next generation is incredibly important to me,” Jess said. “Human connection is, above all, my fundamental motivator in life.” 

ascular Disease is a medical condition that affects the circulatory system. Here in Rancho Bernardo, two surgeons are making a difference with their leadership in the Vascular Care Foundation (VCF), a nonprofit organization that provides education and treatment. Dr. Anatoly Bulkin is the founding VCF board member. “In 2014 I started the Vascular Care Foundation because the majority of patients we treat for vascular disease present with late stages of the disease,” reflected Dr. Bulkin. “Through our efforts we are able to find disease earlier and Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliation: Profession: Family: Hobbies:

Dr. Bulkin is a surgeon at the San Diego Vascular Center in Escondido. Dr. Bulkin explained, “It is difficult to restore health after a heart attack or stroke. Dr. Stefan Moldovan is one of the coordinating vascular surgeons at VCF. He is a provider of surgery services for Every Woman Counts, an organization that supports breast cancer patients with financial hardship. He and his wife are originally from Romania and made the U.S. home 24 years ago. The Moldovans moved here in 2004 for the school system and familyfriendly community, later finding that the hiking trails are excellent too. “It is also our goal to raise money in order to be able to treat people with vascular problems that do not have the financial capability of obtaining the medical care they need,” added Dr. Moldovan. As the program grows VCF can pursue clinical research and advance pioneering technologies in early diagnosis and treatment. “At night I rehearse each step of every planned surgery for the next day, even if I have done that operation a thousand times,” added Dr. Bulkin. hen Matt and Kristin Bradvica moved to Carmel Mountain Ranch in 1999, they were looking for an area that had a true sense of community. “Carmel Mountain Ranch feels like a small town mixed into a big city. The community has everything you need – shops, restaurants, schools, and parks – all within a two-mile radius,” said Kristin. Although she and Matt grew up 10 minutes from one another in Riverside, they didn’t meet until 1997, when he was living in Pacific Beach and she was living in Riverside. According to Kristin there was little doubt who would be relocating once things became serious with the couple. Fast forward to 2015 and the Bradvica family now includes three children – Emma, Jackson, and Hudson. Emma is an eighth grade honor student at Meadowbrook Middle School and is a competitive dancer at San Diego Dance Center. Jackson is a fifth grader and Hudson is a third grader at Shoal Creek Elementary. Both boys play for Carmel Mountain Ranch Little League Parents: Children:

In addition to music, participants can enjoy dancing, shopping, parades, cooking demonstrations and tastings, stories about musicians’ Louisiana heritage, and favorite Cajun dishes from beignets to jambalaya. Team Sparks Competes at Legoland

A group of local fourth graders from Westwood Elementary School and Chaparral Elementary School recently competed in a First Lego League robotics competition at Legoland. First Lego League allows kids to learn critical thinking skills, apply real-world science concepts, and just have fun through projects and tournaments. Team Sparks has been in operation for two years and was excited to continue proving their mechanical expertise. “The team has been practicing for six months to compete,” shared Jody Campillo, parent of two of the team members. “They meet weekly to design, build, program, and test the robots that they have made themselves.” The competition at Legoland featured over 100 teams competing to put their robots through a series of technical challenges. “It is absolutely amazing what these kids accomplish,” said Jody. “Our community is so very proud of these young minds!” Team members include 92128 residents Nicolas Arredondo and Assistant Coach Thom Arredondo.

The Rancho Bernardo Rec eighth grade All Star basketball team recently scored big at the 2015 North County Classic All Star Tourney. The tournament was held at Maranatha Christian Schools and matched up local recreational leagues for 32 games in two days. All Star teams from 4S Ranch Rec, Rancho Bernardo Rec, Carmel Mountain/Sabre Springs Rec, and Poway Rec were proud to represent their leagues. Individual league championships had recently concluded, after which the All Star teams were selected. “Players and coaches took great pride in their local league and competed very hard,” shared Brooks Barnhard, the head coach of the MCS Varsity boys basketball team and owner of San Diego PBC. “I got a strong sense that this was a nice privilege for the kids and that showed in how hard they played.” Congratulations to Aricin Sassady, Brandon Sechrist, Clayton Albright, Dallin Dunn, Dylan Smith, Elijah Zelaya, Lauren Reynolds, Matthew Brashear, Sean O’Connor, Coach Brian Albright, and Coach George Brashear!

The Rancho Bernardo Girls Softball League has had a fantastic season so far. “We started the season in grand style,” shared Lisa Smith, who serves as publicity chair for the league. “There were a lot of new faces at opening day and lots of girls returning to play again this year.” Opening day was a blast for everyone attending – those manning the grill were busy all afternoon, and children of all ages enjoyed the bounce houses. Teams showed off their new uniforms and matching banners, from the Purple Ponies to the Dreamsicles to the Blue Thunder Smurfs. Lisa said, “Each team has been working hard throughout the season learning skills such as hitting, pitching, throwing, and catching. Now the players, coaches, and volunteers are looking forward to the start of All-Star season. Learn more about the league and the upcoming fall season at www.rbgirlssoftball.org.

New Holiday Flags for Rancho Bernardo

Rancho Bernardo residents may have noticed a boost in patriotic displays around town, with more stars and stripes gracing local streets. The Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC) recently implemented a brand new flag program. A grant from the office of Supervisor Dave Roberts provided resources for new holiday flags that the RBCC plans to use on the Rancho Bernardo Rd. medians during all future holidays. President Robin Kaufman and Vice President Patti Hall installed the flags for a test drive on Presidents’ Day. “Some passing motorists honked in support of the project,” shared Robin. “The Rancho Bernardo Community Council is looking forward to displaying many more on the medians Memorial Day and other patriotic holidays.” The RBCC meets on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Rancho Bernardo Library. The Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol (RSVP) invites local residents to help keep the region safe by joining a patrol ride and acquainting the RSVP volunteers with their neighborhoods. “For the RSVP to perform at its best we need to know your neighborhood, and you, the residents, are the best teachers,” explained Recruiting Officer Greg Miller. “You will experience how we patrol our communities, observing for unusual behavior and illegal activity and providing assistance to photo by Zeena Gregg citizens and neighbors in need.” The San Diego Photography Police Department (SDPD) Northeastern Division RSVP covers the neighborhoods of Rancho Peñasquitos, Carmel Mountain Ranch, and Sabre Springs. The group of volunteers patrols neighborhoods, checks on homes when residents are out of town, visits with seniors living alone, and assist officers with traffic, among other services. Contact Greg at 858-213-5394 or visit the San Diego Police Department Northeastern Division station and ask to ride along for a patrol in your neighborhood.

New AEDs for Northeastern Division

Councilman Mark Kersey recently delivered 32 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Northeastern Division, thanks to funding he authorized from the District Five Community Programs, Projects, and Services fund. With this donation the Northeastern Division became the first in the City to have an AED equipped in every patrol car. The division also has an AED in each of its storefronts and the main station. AEDs are used both to diagnose life-threatening cardiac events and restore normal heartbeats through defibrillation. “Every minute counts when it comes to sudden cardiac arrest,” said Kersey. “Police officers are oftentimes the first on the scene to an emergency, even before an ambulance, so having an AED can quite literally save lives.” Led by Police Captain Dawn Summers, the Northeastern Division covers the largest geographical area of any SDPD division, including the communities of Carmel Mountain Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Sabre Springs, and Scripps Ranch.

Get ready for some colorful fun at the 5th Annual Chalk It Up! event. Presented by the Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC), this sidewalk chalk art event is a great opportunity for families to explore their artistic sides. Just head to the Rancho Bernardo Community Park on Saturday, May 2 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The RBCC will supply each participant with a bucket of chalk. After participants have put the finishing touches on their masterpieces, they then return their bucket to the registration table in exchange for coupons valid for free items at local businesses. At the end of the day, the completed artwork will be judged. Prizes will be awarded for first through third place in elementary school, middle school, high school, adult, and senior categories, along with the overall winner. Participants can enjoy free coffee, bottled water, and cookies. For the fifth anniversary event the first 200 participants will also receive commemorative T-shirts. The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) recently held the annual What I Wish My Parents Knew Parenting Forum at Rancho Bernardo High School. The forum was an opportunity for learning and conversation facilitated by PUSD high school principals and local leaders in the faith community, focused on helping parents support their children through the potentially difficult teenaged years. The program began with an opening session featuring a studentdesigned video, then continued with a series of seven workshops, of which parents could choose two to attend. Topics ranged from Handling Academic Pressure to Building Healthy Relationships. The event steering committee is composed of Rancho Bernardo High School Principal David LeMaster, Del Norte High School Principal Greg Mizel, Westview Church Pastor Jesse Winkler, The Gathering Place Pastor John Ettore, Former Poway High School Principal Scott Fisher, Community Leader Susie Berner, Westview High School Principal Todd Cassen, and PUSD Student Services Coordinator Traci Barker-Ball. PUSD Foundation Golf Classic

The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Foundation’s 8th Annual Partners in Education Golf Classic will be held on Monday, May 4 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Resort and Spa. The games will begin with a shotgun start at 12 p.m., followed by a reception, dinner, and silent and live auctions. The Partners in Education Golf Classic is the foundation’s major annual fundraiser, and proceeds will fund ongoing support of programs across the district. These programs serve over 35,000 students in 39 schools throughout San Diego and Poway and help prepare students for college; advance science, technology, engineering, arts, and math skills; and support rigor, relevance, and relationships in every classroom. PUSD Foundation President Fred Pierce noted, “The annual golf classic also provides a perfect forum for community leaders to get together, to network, and to support a great cause. Our students are the future of our community.” The foundation is currently seeking sponsors, auction items, and golfers. For more information visit www.pusdfoundation.org or call 858-668-4041.

The Kiwanis Club of Rancho Bernardo Celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Kiwanis International photos by Spark Photography In the 100 years since its founding in 1915, Kiwanis International has grown to include over 600,000 members in more than 8,400 clubs all across the world – including the 41 dedicated members who meet right here in 92128. The Kiwanis Club of Rancho Bernardo was founded in 1967 and has proven its passion and talent for service according to the Kiwanis motto: Serving the Children of the World. From hosting pancake breakfasts to coordinating service hours to sponsoring youth programs, local Kiwanians are always happy to lend a hand. We speak with Club President John Sleeper to learn more about how the club embodies the Kiwanis mission.

Q&A

with President John Sleeper

For those who might not know, what is a Kiwanis Club? Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Our service projects address issues such as malnutrition, illiteracy, and access to medical care. Working together, each Kiwanis club achieves what one person cannot accomplish alone. And along the way club members share fellowship and laughter. The name Kiwanis was inspired by an Indian phrase “NunKee-wan-is” which means “We have a good time – we make noise.” Rancho Bernardo Kiwanis provides fellowship and opportunities to serve the community in meaningful ways.

Can you tell us a bit about the history of Kiwanis? Kiwanis was founded in 1915 in Detroit with one club and has grown to over 8,400 clubs in 96 countries with over 600,000 active members.

John Sleeper Rancho Bernardo College Five children, five grandchildren

What is the club’s mission? Do you have a motto? The Kiwanis motto is “Serving the Children of the World.” Our mission is to provide fellowship and service wherever needed in the community.

Can you tell us about the history behind Kiwanis Club of Rancho Bernardo?

What communities does Kiwanis of Rancho Bernardo work with?

The Kiwanis Club of Los Rancheros, also known as the Kiwanis Club of Rancho Bernardo, was sponsored by the Kiwanis of Hidden Valley (Escondido) in 1967. Prior to 1967 only men were eligible for membership. Now we are fortunate that women represent a large percentage of membership and the average age of membership is getting younger as time goes by. Kiwanis must make you young!

The Kiwanis Club of Rancho Bernardo works with the community of Rancho Bernardo, the community of San Diego, the community of California, the community of the United States, and the community of the world. We are a global organization and work as close as our own backyard and as far away as Romania. We develop strong personal relationships among our members through our shared causes. We are family.

How did you first become involved with Kiwanis? What appealed to you about the organization? I became a member in 2007. My wife and I raised five children in Rancho Bernardo and always felt that service was an important part of living here. Rancho Bernardo Kiwanis gives us an opportunity to volunteer with like-minded community members.

What is your current role within the club? What are your duties in that role? I am currently club president. My wife Julie was club president last year and Larry McCulla will be our next president beginning in October 2015. The president presides at weekly breakfast meetings and board meetings. The president also receives committee reports on activities of the club, including sponsored youth programs such as Key Clubs and Kiwins.

Do you have any upcoming projects or fundraisers that the community should be aware of, including plans for the 100th Anniversary of Kiwanis? Yes – big plans for our 100-year anniversary. The committee is hard at work preparing project ideas to present to members. The projects under consideration include new playground equipment, a new baseball batting cage, storage lockers, and bleachers at the RB Community Field. We are also considering a grant to Rady Children’s Hospital to implement and support pediatric trauma training for first responders. Our next annual fundraiser, the 47th Annual Rancho Bernardo Pancake Breakfast, will be on Sept. 5. Kiwanis Club of Rancho Bernardo will fix pancakes, sausage, orange juice, and coffee for $7. This is a wonderful community breakfast on Labor Day weekend at Rancho Bernardo High School with a Dixieland jazz band. This is not only our biggest fundraiser; it is a wonderful opportunity to get together with friends to raise funds to support Kiwanis programs in our community. We will begin selling tickets to the pancake breakfast in June and can receive tax deductible contributions to support all our projects and programs. Our projects are funded through the Kiwanis Club of Los Ranchero Foundation, established in 1976 and supported by donations from the community. This foundation is exempt under 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue code and donations to the foundation are tax deductible (Tax ID# 23-7133914) and may be sent to: Kiwanis Club of Los Rancheros Foundation, P.O. Can you tell us about Key Club?

How would someone join the Kiwanis Club?

Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. It is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through service to others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. What are your short-term and long-term goals for the club? We would like to grow our membership and enlarge on volunteer opportunities in the community. We would like to make it easy for the members to participate so everyone becomes involved in community service events and opportunities.

To explore membership call me at 858-945-4288 and join us for breakfast as a guest and check out what we do. Get to know the members and someone will ask you if you would like to join. If you are interested, you will be given an application. The board reviews the application and votes you in, you pay your dues, and then you become a part of our Kiwanis Family. We would welcome the opportunity to get to know you.

How many members does your club currently have? 41 and growing.

When and where does the club meet? Rancho Bernardo Kiwanis meets every Wednesday at 7 a.m. at Café Merlot in the Bernardo Winery – 13330 Paseo Del Verano Norte.

What are some social events Kiwanis hosts for members? Some of my favorite events include our Christmas party, Halloween party, anniversary dinner, bowling night, baseball game, and Taco Tuesdays.

What’s the most exciting aspect of being a Kiwanian? It is nice to work on projects with like-minded people. We do make a difference in our community and you get a glimpse of that when you perform service. When we reach out a helping hand to those in need, we are blessed with a sense of wellbeing and purpose. Kindness heals.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our 92128 Magazine readers? You can support the Kiwanis Club of Rancho Bernardo’s projects by donating to the foundation, becoming a member, or buying tickets to the annual pancake breakfast where you can listen to a Dixieland jazz band and break bread (or pancakes) with your friends. We would welcome your participation at any level. ¢

Goals for Wishes

BRONCOS WATER POLO TEAMS FUNDRAISE FOR MAKE-A-WISH SAN DIEGO

T

he student-athletes of the Rancho Bernardo High School water polo team recently raised $1,600 for Make-A-Wish San Diego. The pledge drive was called Broncos Goals for Wishes and recruited team members to raise funds based on the number of goals or assists they completed during the last season. The drive was the brainchild of Taylor Brown, Team Captain for the girls’ water polo team. She read an article about a local boy whose wish to see a platypus in Australia was granted, and she was inspired to contact the Make-A-Wish foundation to ask how the water polo team could fundraise for the organization. “I didn’t know an average wish costs $7,500,” said Taylor. “It’s amazing to learn how the wishes they grant change kids’ lives.” Head Coach Fred Gleason was proud to join Taylor in presenting the pledge drive to the team, and almost all of the varsity players participated in the pledge. The boys’ varsity team made a total of 257 goals during the season. The girls’ varsity team made 269 goals and earned the CIF Division 1 Championship title. “Our pledge drive would not have been successful without the support and generosity of players and their families,” said Taylor. “During our season, there were all kinds of expenses that families had to incur and yet they responded in kindness with monetary donations to help the community. We are forever grateful to our Broncos families.”

My Last Piece of Advice

I

t’s been quite a journey, hasn’t it seniors? The four years of high school, though it seemed like such a long process at the time, have quickly come to an end, and all of us are now facing a huge decision that will shape our future. Before we go off to the next part of our lives, let’s look back at our mistakes and successes and use our experiences to help better the future classes of RB High. Freshmen. Nobody can forget the overwhelming anxiety mixed with excitement that accompanies you on the first day of high school. It may be terrifying, but there’s no better time in your high school career to try out something new and explore your passions. There are so many different clubs and sports on campus that it shouldn’t be too hard finding at least one that you like, and it should be easy finding at the least one other person that you connect with on such a diverse campus. Sophomores. By now you probably have a sense of how high school works. A lot of students begin to challenge themselves sophomore year by taking an honors or AP class. It may seem strenuous in the day-to-day grind, but challenging yourself academically is one of the best experiences you can have during high school.

Juniors. “The Big Year,” as those before me called it. For those struggling to juggle academics and a social life, it’s okay to take time for yourself instead of studying consecutively for AP classes or for standardized tests. You’re not going to look back in 10 years and rejoice in the fact that you studied four hours straight. Go out and build some memories with your friends and family. Seniors. In exactly one year from now, you’re going to be stepping onto a huge campus with totally different people in a totally different environment, but you have to successfully finish senior year first. The alleged “senioritis” is not just a myth, it’s a cold, hard fact. Once you get past the college apps stage and enter into the blessed state of “secondsemester senior,” you’ll be able to finally take a break and look back. You may laugh at the memories or you may cry, but one thing is for sure, you’re going to miss this place. ¢ Jenny Jeong is a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School. SNORKELING

SAN DIEGO

Snorkel into Summer and Explore San Diego's Underwater Landscape by LAINEY KRAL

S

an Diegans don’t have to travel far to discover a whole new world this summer – we live just a splash away from two unique snorkeling spots. La Jolla has something to see under the sea for novices and experts alike.

If you don’t have gear, there are plenty of local places to buy or rent from. A snorkel and mask are the basic essentials. Make sure the mask fits and feels comfortable. It should seal tightly to your face without requiring you to overtighten the strap. Optional equipment includes fins for greater speed and maneuverability, snorkeling vests for some extra buoyancy, and wetsuits for colder waters. Snorkeling novices may choose to sign up for a tour or class to get some in-person instruction. If you’re going out with just your family, you should check in with the lifeguards when you get to the beach and ask about the current water conditions. La Jolla Cove is a favorite snorkeling destination, with three distinct areas to explore. Straight out from the south end of the cove are kelp beds teaming with fish. Up the coast to the north is a series of sea caves, best visible in low tide. Advanced snorkelers can swim into the caves, but be careful of unexpected wave surges. The middle of the cove is

44 • 92128Magazine.com • May | June 2015

the most popular spot for snorkeling. The wide variety of fish are used to people and will often swim up close. Look out for the California state fish – the bright orange Garibaldi. You may also spot rays, sea slugs, urchins, or other aquatic creatures. Right down the coast is La Jolla Shores. For most of the year there’s little to see at this beach besides sand, but every summer La Jolla Shores becomes a nursing ground for hundreds of distinctively spotted leopard sharks. Unless you happen to be a small crustacean or mollusk, it’s perfectly safe to swim out among them. The visibility can be low with the waves stirring up sand, and the sharks are easiest to spot just when the visibility starts to improve. Swim straight out from The Marine Room restaurant until you reach a depth of four to five feet, then keep swimming to the left and right. Move slowly to avoid scaring them off. While the sharks can be found as early as June, their numbers will peak between August and September. ¢

My Emergency Facts

92128 RESIDENT CREATES RESOURCE TO DOCUMENT EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION

9

2128 resident Andy Mallon has turned a life-threatening medical event into a chance to help others. “I have been on chemotherapy every three weeks since 2008,” explained Andy. “The good news is I am in remission and only suffered the usual chemo exhaustion.” He moved to Rancho Bernardo last year to help his mother continue living in her beloved home. All was well until last Thanksgiving when a month-long case of GERD sent him to the Sharp Emergency Room. He took note of the intake questions at the ER and created a form for emergencies, listing details of his condition, chemotherapy, dosages of other medications, allergies to medications and certain foods, his oncologist’s contact information, and his medical insurance information, among other details. Three weeks later, a case of cardiac

fibrillation almost killed him. Andy said, “What helped save me, according to the 911 responders, was that I had that form ready.” The cardiologist at Palomar Medical Center was able to quickly identify a conflict between one of the chemotherapy drugs and a medication he would typically use. “Because of my form he also was able to contact my oncologist and work it out on the spot,” said Andy. “Some people do carry a list of their meds, but frankly more information is needed.” After this harrowing experience, Andy decided to create a website where people could subscribe to receive forms to complete for their emergency medical information, as well as regular email reminders to update them. “It’s critical to keep the form updated for changes in meds, condition, etc.,” said Andy. oin Team RWB on the track at Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) on May 30 for the 4 th Annual Team RWB RBHS Challenge. The challenge is an opportunity to support American veterans and welcome them back into the community after service. The event lasts from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is a 12-hour relay run for teams of 12 – though participants are welcome to stay for however long or short a time they’re able to, and smaller teams are also able to participate. Participants can run, walk, or even swim in the adjacent pool. Volunteers are also welcome to help run the event in various roles, and community members can also attend simply to take in the festivities. The day begins with the ceremonial first lap, with honorary team captains leading all participants and community members in a group lap around the track. The community marks the course with 100 large American flags. At the end of the day, another group run completes the final lap and collects the flags. Team RWB especially invites veterans and their families, high school students, and survivors of deceased veterans and firstresponders. Civilian participants can register for a $15 donation, and veterans or active duty military can register for $10. The RBHS connection to Team RWB is year-round. One football game a season is dedicated to the organization. Event Organizer Kathleen Kennedy shared, “The football team has also adopted a

lite Pediatric Dentistry was the first pediatric dental practice in 4S Ranch and has been providing dental care to children in the community for over two years now. Under the care of Dr. Femme Ambrosio and her team, the practice strives to provide extraordinary care for every patient, every day. “The practice has grown considerably since I first started,” said Dr. Ambrosio. “Our team is committed to improving, maintaining, and growing ourselves for the benefit of the children we see.” According to Dr. Ambrosio, a board certified pediatric dentist, having a boutique practice allows her the time necessary to ensure that children and parents have a positive experience and the best possible care. The office encourages open communication and takes the time to explain prevention plans, treatment and procedure options, and finances. Dr. Ambrosio understands that each child is

unique and must be treated as such. “These visits can be overwhelming and we hope that getting to know each child individually will help in their overall care.” It is the friendly and compassionate team at Elite Pediatric Dentistry that truly sets the practice apart. Dr. Ambrosio has worked in various pediatric dental offices throughout the country and learned a great deal from each experience. When she decided to open her own practice, she and her team not only had the knowledge but also the skill set and personality to provide for their patients. “From the moment a parent calls to schedule an appointment to the time a family walks out the door they are treated with care,” said Dr. Ambrosio. Dr. Ambrosio is a native San Diegan, wife, and mother, all of which she feels serve her well in her practice. Dr. Ambrosio is a mother to Bennett (4), Amelie (3) and Camdyn (1). “It has always been a goal of mine to not only support the oral health of our patients, but to also be a part of the community our children grow up in,”

T

he 6th Annual San Diego Women’s Week was educational, empowering, and extremely fun. Organized by the North San Diego Business Chamber under the leadership of President Debra Rosen, the week’s unique events celebrated the impact and potential of women in the local business community. Opening Day kicked off with complimentary head shots, breakout sessions, speakers, a fashion show, and more. Women and Wine at the Bernardo Winery was a relaxing evening of wine and food pairings, with plenty of mingling and networking. Thursday’s Looking & Feeling Great event at Sharp Healthcare included a workplace style demonstration and an informative panel Q&A with local physicians. The week concluded with the all-day Inspiration Conference. Speakers included Kim Coles, Bonnie Dumanis, Alicia Gwynn, and Gretchen Rubin. The ZCode Media team was proud to be a sponsor for the week and even more excited to participate in the amazing opportunities. Learn more at www.sdwomensweek.com. ¢

:::: HOME TIPS

tailored living TURN YOUR HOME FROM A CLUTTERY MESS TO A CHARMING RETREAT

C

lutter. It’s the bane of many homeowners. And it seems just as the clutter has been cleared, more clutter arrives to take its place. Tailored Living has been helping area homeowners rediscover their homes and fall in love with them all over again. “Clutter gets in our way of seeing our homes for all they can be,” said owner Dana Nuesca. “We can help you get a handle on your clutter and beautify your home too.” Getting started is the most difficult part. So Dana recommends starting with small tasks such as a corner or a drawer. “One task that has helped others is Toss 50, which means a homeowner will discard or recycle 50 items throughout the house during one week’s time,” offered Dana. “Get rid of broken items, discouraging items, and things that don’t work. They’re just dragging you down.” Once you clear up the clutter, know what you’re keeping and have a pretty good idea of where you’re going to keep it, Tailored Living will visit your home and design a storage solution just for you. “It’s not helpful to purchase a cookie cutter storage solution,” said Dana. “Tailored Living uses space design software so we can create a number of storage solutions and review them with the homeowners to make sure the chosen design meets their specific needs.” She added, “Once homeowners cut through the clutter, they can see the inherent beauty in their homes.” Tailored Living of North County San Diego featuring PremierGarage began operation in 2014 and is owned and operated by Escondido residents Kalani and Dana Nuesca. The company proudly serves homeowners and businesses from all over North County, offering storage solutions for garages, closets, pantries, mudrooms, home offices, and even guest rooms through complimentary in-home estimates and consultations, professional measuring, and installation. For more information on Tailored Living of North County call 858-877-9005 or visit www.tailoredliving.com/carlsbad. 

RB Welcomes New Hall of Famers

NANCY CANFIELD AND SHIRLEY BLACK TO BE HONORED FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

T

wo stand-out community members are being inducted into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame this year. Nancy Canfield was nominated by Ted Gaasch, and Shirley Black was nominated by Frances French. Nancy is being honored for her work with the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society (RBHS). She currently serves as the organization’s president. “I am so honored to be inducted into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame,” shared Nancy. She added, “I hasten to say, no one person can make success happen without a dedicated team. This is true in business, in volunteer organizations, in neighborhoods, churches, and even in the family. I am humbled by the award and accept in the name of all of those who helped to bring the RBHS to its present success.” Learn more about the RBHS at www.rbhistoricalsociety.org. Shirley is being recognized for

her significant contributions to the Rancho Bernardo High School Friends of the Library (FOL). The organization recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, and Shirley is one of the members still active from the original meeting. Including her service to the FOL, she has spent over 30 years volunteering for the Poway Unified School District. She currently serves as the used book sales coordinator, greatly increasing the success and impact of the regular events through her leadership and dedication. Find out more at www.rbhsfriendsofthelibrary.org. Nancy and Shirley’s induction will be formalized at an invitation-only dinner held in their honor on May 9. The RB Hall of Fame has honored outstanding volunteers from the Rancho Bernardo community since 1974. Shirley and Nancy are the 108th and 109th inductees. Learn more at www.rbhalloffame.org. ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

92128 a Seller’s Market? Absolutely!

I

n one of my previous articles, I wrote about the first half of 2014 as being a strong seller’s market and then... the bottom fell out! Well, guess what? In 2015, we really are in a seriously strong seller’s market! December proved to be the first indicator the market had switched gears. 92128 has had 107 homes (detached, attached, townhomes, etc.) close escrow since Jan. 1, 2015. The average number of days on the market was an amazing 48 days. That may seem high, but take into consideration that many of those homes had well over 100 days on the market. Nearly one third of the 107 homes sold had a market time of 15 days or less. It has become increasingly noticeable that the desirability of 92128 is putting local homes at the top of buyers’ lists. The beautiful, sunny 92128 is one of the most sought-after markets to find a home. With the moderate climate year-round, idyllic location, close proximity to the beach, and high-performing schools, it’s no wonder so many families are looking to move here. Although it is

ranked as one of the more expensive markets to purchase a home, the 92128 housing market is making a push forward and seeing some positive signs in 2015. Don’t hesitate to get a new home or move up to the home of your dreams. The San Diego housing market is in a great place starting out in 2015. Investing in a home in San Diego County at this time is a great move for any family. Thinking of changing your address? Let our team of elite real estate professionals assist you! We can be found at Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty at 3860 Valley Centre Dr. Suite 409, San Diego, CA 92130, next door to Vons.
