Traditions.

A

s we approach the holiday season, you can’t help but reflect back on family traditions and memories that most of us have been fortunate to grow up with. It’s very easy to turn on the “autopilot” and get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life – our work schedules, house duties, playing taxi driver for our children. The list goes on and on... I recently attended a business seminar in Las Vegas. A topic that came up frequently throughout the seminar was family traditions and memories – specifically childhood memories. To be honest, until I was asked to recall and analyze some of my best memories over the past 39 years, I had not given it much technical thought. Sure, everyone has memories – some that they hold dear to their heart and some that they may want to forget. But forcing myself to take a trip down memory lane proved to be a rewarding and enlightening exercise. I believe that there are a few types of memories (generally speaking) that are welcomed and tend to stand out in most people’s minds – the good memories and the memories surrounding family traditions. I can easily pull up the good memories. Childhood sports. Playing with friends in the neighborhood. Video game marathons. Derrick Breaux Family vacations and road trips. Awesome cardboard box forts! Publisher But one of the things that is easy to overlook is the stability that comes along with traditions. Most of our family traditions involved holidays. Growing up, there were always certain things that I could rely on. To name a few, I knew exactly what we were going to be doing on Christmas Eve every year. I knew what food would be served for Thanksgiving. I loved the annual family camping trip – always at the same lake and campsite. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I definitely found peace in the consistency that came along with these traditions. My son made me feel good the other day when we were discussing our upcoming holiday plans. My wife and I were bouncing a few different ideas around when he blurted out, “but we always cook gumbo on Halloween and Christmas Eve!” In his mind, I’m sure the little things like cooking a family favorite on certain days of the year are just “what we do.” But they are actually so much more than that. I intend to continue with as many of the traditions that have been passed along to me, and I hope that one day my kids will be able to reflect on these traditions and choose to carry them on and introduce them to their own families. To family, creating memories, and carrying on with great traditions. Happy Holidays! Derrick Breaux, Publisher

or Corey Blanton and Christy Grider, volunteering together on the Highland Ranch Elementary School (HRES) PTA is rewarding and a lot of fun. “Corey was one of the first parents I met at HRES when our now third grade girls were in the same first grade class. We hit it off at back-to-school night and have been very good friends ever since,” revealed Christy. The two women are both involved at HRES as PTA board members, room moms for their children’s classes and the co-chairs for the Fall Festival. According to Corey and Christy, the Fall Festival, which is held each year in late October, recently transformed from a service event to a primary fundraiser for the PTA. “We added some carnival rides, food trucks and a professional carnival vendor for our booths and games. We hope in the coming years to make the Fall Festival a community-wide event that raises ample funds to support HRES,” explained Christy. Corey and Christy feel incredibly lucky to work with a great group of parents and staff at HRES, including this year’s PTA president, Kristi Schneider. They are also thrilled to be helping the students have a positive and fun school experience. “The most

rewarding part is seeing how much the kids appreciate what we do and how much they enjoy it; not just my kids, but all the kids. It means a lot to me to support and help the teachers, coaches and leaders that make such a big difference in my kids’ lives,” stated Corey, who taught at the elementary school level for seven years. Corey is mom to four children, three of whom currently attend HRES, and one who is at Bernardo Heights Middle School. “Collectively, they are involved in Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Pop Warner football and cheer and karate,” related Corey. As a family, the Blantons love to head up to Disneyland whenever they can. And when she has a moment to herself, Corey enjoys reading, scrapbooking and going out with friends. In addition to her volunteer commitments, Christy is on the faculty at the University of Phoenix. She has a diverse accounting and finance background and holds an MBA from the University of Phoenix. When she isn’t teaching online classes or volunteering at HRES, she enjoys cooking, reading, spending time with friends, camping and exploring the California coast with her husband and two daughters. ¢

t is no wonder that Brian Maienschein, Assemblyman for the 77th District, is dedicated to making San Diego an even better place to live – his roots in the community run deep. He moved to Poway when he was seven years old and attended Chaparral Elementary School, Twin Peaks Middle School and Poway High School. “San Diego has so much to offer – beautiful weather, gorgeous beaches, so many different things to do on a daily basis and great people. There is nowhere else I’d rather live,” stated Maienschein, whose daughters currently attend school in the Poway Unified School District. Maienschein received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and then returned to San Diego to earn his law degree from California Western School of Law. In 2000, Maienschein was elected to the San Diego City Council. He became known to many in the district for his quick response to the Cedar and Witch Creek wildfires that swept through the community during his tenure. After his second term on the City Council, Maienschein became San Diego’s first Commissioner on Homelessness, a position he held for four years. According to Maienschein, he has always felt strongly about serving his community and giving back to his hometown. “To be able to represent my classmates, neighbors and friends is an honor that I never take for granted,” revealed Maienschein. Now that he is halfway through his first term as an assemblyman, Maienschein is even more committed to ensuring that issues such as community safety, education and economic growth are at the forefront of state politics. “I work hard to focus on the issues that are important to my constituents, as well on common ground issues that that can improve the lives of all Californians,” said Maienschein. He is particularly pleased that his legislation allowing background checks for coaches of youth sports leagues has passed. Maienschein is also passionate about creating and passing meaningful legislation that makes a significant impact on issues such as mental health and homelessness. Although Maienschein is proud of his professional achievements, he feels that his daughters, Taylin and Brenna, are his most rewarding accomplishments. He coaches their Brian Maienschein soccer teams, 44 and the three of California State Assemblymember them can often Father of two daughters, Taylin and Brenna Maienschein be seen out and Spending time with my daughters, reading and sports about. “We’re an active family, and we love spending time outdoors, either having picnics at one of the local lakes or running around playing soccer at the park,” related Maienschein. 

SHE’S GOT GAME The Future Looks Bright for Talented Tennis Player Carissa Bernhardt by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Spark Photography

F

or Carissa Bernhardt it’s hard to imagine life without tennis. She started playing at the age of four and began competing in tournaments by age seven. Her mother coached the sport for over 15 years and was ranked number one in the nation in paddle tennis. Her oldest brother, Cameron, plays tennis for Claremont McKenna College, and her other brother Christopher plays for a club team at the University of Arizona. Meanwhile, her little sister, Christianne, just started playing in her first tournaments. Carissa’s family received the 2011 Southern California Tennis Family of the Year Award at her father’s alma mater, UCLA. Today, Carissa – who is a sophomore at Rancho Bernardo High School – plays #1 girls tennis for her school and is looking forward to a bright future in the sport.

Carissa, who has been recognized by the Union Tribune as Athlete of the Week, 2nd team all-league and 1st team all-CIF (California Interscholastic Federation), and has been awarded for displaying good sportsmanship at tournaments, was ranked #20 in Southern California this past July. Last fall, she and her doubles partner, Wakana Tanaka, won the CIF Individual Doubles Championship for her school team, and this year she is one of the team captains. “We have a very young team with lots of potential, so I’m looking forward to having a great season,” she shared. “I’m working hard to have a better record, improve my game, and defend my CIF title.” With her skills on the tennis court and her dedication to her grades (she has been awarded for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher three years in a row, and is looking to add more AP classes to her schedule next year), Carissa hopes to eventually earn an athletic or academic scholarship to a Division 1 college. For inspiration, Carissa turns to family. “My oldest brother, Cameron, always gives me good advice with tennis and otherwise,” she stated. “My other brother, Christopher, won the CIF Individual Doubles Championship back-to-back, a feat that I would love to repeat.” Still unsure of what college she would like to attend, or where she wants to take her tennis career upon college graduation, Carissa is certain of one thing: “I know that I will stay involved with tennis for my whole life,” she said. ¢

Supporting junior golfers is important to the future of the sport,” said Roger Porzak, president of the San Diego Junior Golf Association, adding that it also allows the golfing community to enrich the lives of children by teaching sportsmanship, discipline and integrity while the kids are having a good time playing the game. Roger, a mortgage banker with American Capital Home Loans in Rancho Bernardo, stresses the word “fun” when discussing junior golf programs, but he also praises the effectiveness of those programs in preparing youngsters to compete at the high school and college levels. To illustrate, he points to the program at Bernardo Heights Country Club (BHCC) in Rancho Bernardo where he is a member. He feels other golf courses would do well to emulate that program, which is not only open to children and grandchildren of BHCC members but also to any of their friends who would like to participate. The junior program at BHCC is a year-round endeavor, featuring clinics on Saturdays with separate instruction for beginners as well as for intermediate and advanced golfers. for intermediate players, and 18 holes for more advanced golfers. “Participants can work on their golf swings and focus on short-game and scoring-zone skills at their own pace, learning in a safe, ‘junior friendly’ environment that is conducive to developing friendships and a love for the game of golf,” Roger said. At the end of each summer, a junior championship tournament is played at BHCC, and a young lady won the trophy this year for the first time. Playing from the back tees at the tips of the 6,679-yard course, Jamie Binns shot 78 to win the tournament’s 18-hole championship flight. Runner-up to Jamie was Patrick Norris of Rancho Bernardo. The 9-hole champion was Logan Rethmeier and the 3-hole champion was Quinn Conway, both of Poway. Jamie is a senior at Scripps Ranch High School, and she finished 17 th in this year’s California Women’s State Golf Championship. She will attend Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo next year on a golf scholarship. A young man from BHCC whose abilities have now advanced well beyond the “junior” level also distinguished himself on the links this year. Eric Sugimoto of Rancho Bernardo led his University of the Pacific team to the Big West Championship title, capturing the individual medalist honors for himself. 

Love on a Leash

The Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy by ROBIN KAUFMAN | President, San Diego Love On A Leash

W

hat do libraries, schools, hospitals, veterans facilities, domestic violence centers, and court rooms all have in common? They, along with a number of other places, all receive pet therapy visits from Love On A Leash (LOAL), the Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy organization. Love On A Leash is a national, non-profit, all volunteer organization established in 1984. The goal is simple – to bring smiles and comfort to those who are visited by a pet therapy animal. Pet therapy animals are privately owned and can be a dog, cat, or rabbit. The dogs can be pure breeds, mixed breeds, and come in all sizes. LOAL does not raise and train dogs to be service or companion animals. To become a fully certified LOAL pet therapy team, dogs must have basic obedience skills and a good temperament. After graduating from a six-week pet therapy training class and passing a control evaluation test (as well as passing the Canine Good Citizen test), the dogs and their humans must then complete a minimum of 10 supervised visits. For cats and rabbits, a veterinarian must certify their health and temperament. After initial certification, those pets must also complete a minimum of 10 supervised visits. There are three LOAL chapters in San Diego County – San Diego Love On A Leash (sandiegoLOAL@aol.com), which covers the north county inland areas; San Diego North County Chapter (mgleisberg@cox.net), which covers the north county coastal areas; and the San Diego Central Chapter (sandiegocentralloal@gmail.com), which covers everything in-between. To learn more about Love On A Leash, visit the national website at www.loveonaleash.org, or San Diego Love On A Leash’s website at www.sandiegoLOAL.com. 

T

he Rasoul family delights in calling Carmel Mountain Ranch their home, and they’ve been happily ensconced in the area since 2002. The patriarch, Sam, even earns a living extolling the virtues of his community. As a realtor/partner investor with Keller Williams Realty in Sabre Springs for the past 20 years, Sam is one of the top selling agents representing the 92128 zip code, and has sold roughly 700 homes in his career. His wife Jessica, who assists Sam at his office, stated, “Carmel Mountain Ranch is ideal for us.” Considering the parents have great pride in their chosen neighborhood, it’s inevitable that they are actively involved in keeping their community wonderful. Sam serves on the Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Planning

Council, and is on the Board of Directors for Carmel Mountain Ranch Little League. Jessica volunteers at her children’s schools, and admitted, “My primary focus and love is being an amazing mom and wife.” The Rasoul children (Jalen, 13, Josh, 11, and Jenna, 8), are just as active as their parents. All three participate in Christian Youth Theatre, with Jalen showing a particular passion for performing (when he isn’t busy showing off his volleyball skills). Josh is the baseball player of the bunch, and is also a surf fanatic who can’t get enough of the beach. Jenna’s particular obsession is horseback riding, and she takes riding lessons two to three times a week. Speaking of horseback riding, the family owns a horse and frequently attends to it

at the Poway ranch it’s boarded at. Or, as Sam confessed, “Jessica and the kids do all the horse activities while I take pictures and maybe ride for a bit.” The parents’ roles are reversed when all head out to the beach. Jessica laughed, “Sam and the kids surf and boogie board, while I tan myself and read.” Pleased that they can be at a horse ranch and at the beach on the same day, the Rasouls can’t praise their home base location enough. Sam explained, “Carmel Mountain Ranch is close to shopping, parks and schools, and it has easy access to the 56 and 15 freeways.” When the family just wants to lay low and enjoy their local hangouts, you can find one or more of the Rasouls satisfying their taste buds at Jamba Juice, Tutti Frutti Yogurt, Thaigo Restaurant, Chick-fil-A or Oggi’s. ¢

Margaret McKenzie Celebrates Her 100th

Margaret McKenzie, a resident of 92128, celebrated her 100th birthday on Oct. 6, 2013. On Oct. 7 she continued her celebration with a personal training session at Personally Fit. Margaret was born in Kensington and grew up in San Diego. As a child she was considered “sickly” and survived the dreaded Spanish Flu not once, but twice. Margaret has led a very independent life and was able to maintain a very high quality of life. She attributed it to three things: commitment to “healthy eating”, joining Personally Fit in 1995 and working out 3 times a week with Sean, her personal trainer, and being able to travel around the world and enjoy a variety of cultures. This Oct. 7 was designated “Celebrate Margaret Day” at Personally Fit.

In Memory of Sharon Stephens

Sharon Stephens, a resident of 92128, claimed she was “not average”, at six feet tall and full of energy, happiness, and courage. Stephens was a breast cancer fighter, dedicated to the Susan G. Komen foundation and the famed Race for the Cure here in San Diego. Team WWSD, or “What Would Sharon Do?” was formed in 2011 with Sharon at the helm as captain. At the 2011 Race for the Cure, Team WWSD raised over $20,000 due to Sharon’s enthusiasm and with the help of those who loved and admired her. Sadly, in March 2012, Sharon lost her battle with breast cancer. The 2012 Race for the Cure was dedicated to her, and this year Team WWSD will walk/ run in the 2013 Race for the Cure. The Rancho Bernardo Historical Society’s Speakers Series presents the History of 4S Ranch on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. in the Rancho Bernardo History Museum. Linda Ralphs Kaeser, whose grandfather purchased the 3600 acre 4S Ranch in 1938, will share her memories of horseback riding and bird hunting. Rancho Bernardo Road was a dirt extension of Black Mountain Rd. and cattle grazed on the hillsides. Her extended family continues to vacation there in the same way their grandparents did in 1938, off the grid with no public services and no utilities, just cool breezes whispering through the eucalyptus trees. Linda’s family kept the original 90 year old Ranch House, and in 1981 formed a development enterprise which turned 4S Ranch into the complete planned community we see today. T

he world of custom shirts and apparel is a dark and scary place. Vectorized artwork? Color separation? Screen fees?! Don’t worry, there’s a new shop in town that is bringing a new attitude to an otherwise confusing process. Viva Merch, based in Rancho Bernardo, can provide your business, organization, school or event with professional, high-quality shirts for less than you might expect. But that’s not all, as the shop includes an in-house design team who can turn your creative vision into a reality. Director of Operations Nick Martin related, “Viva Merch prides itself on being a locally based company that provides a service to the communities and families around us. We strive to make the process as simple as possible.” And with clients like Rancho Bernardo High School, Brothers Provisions, Batter up Cupcakes, Monterey Ridge Elementary School, Mother Earth Brew Co., Encinitas Chamber of Commerce, Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council, Urge American Gastropub, Westview Lacrosse and Willow Grove Elementary School, Viva Merch has proven to be a perfect fit for a wide range of clients from North County San Diego all the way to Australia. Nick was introduced to the screen printing world over 10 years ago. Taking a break to tour

at a glance and travel the world in various musical groups, Nick became dependent on merchandise sales to make a living. He explained, “My experience is double-sided; one, being the producer of merchandise goods, with the other side actually being the customer purchasing and selling the merchandise for profit. My experience extends out to our customers on many different levels so they can fully take advantage of promoting their business, school, brand or band effectively.” Items such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, sweatpants, polo shirts, V-necks, baseball tees, athletic wear and more are available to adorn your visions and designs onto. The shop also has the means to produce posters, stickers, business cards and banners. Nick assured, “If you have an idea, we can make it happen.” 

join the

club! RBHS students plan for the future with their involvement in school clubs photos by Tyler McElhaney

H

igh school is full of life’s most influential and permanent experiences. Everything from school dances to sporting events, lunch break hangouts to homework, and late night cram sessions. But it’s the students that shape those experiences for the rest of the class that truly benefit from what these deceptively quick four years have to offer. We talked

with Rancho Bernardo High School’s ASB Director Terri Rogelstad, ASB President Ju Ju Bae, and ASB Vice-President of Communications Atrina Pebdani, and provide an insight into just a few of the officially sanctioned active clubs available to students at the school. Whether it brings back memories of a simpler time, or motivation for current or future students, one thing is sure: the effort the students put into these programs is just a fraction of the benefits that they will ultimately leave RBHS with.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AS ASB PRESIDENT? My role as ASB president is to oversee all activities put on by ASB and serve as the representative of the entire school body.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT BEING ASB PRESIDENT? THE MOST CHALLENGING? The most rewarding part about being ASB president is being involved with such a talented group of students. All the members of ASB are motivated and ambitious, and it is an honor being able to work with them. The most challenging part has been balancing my hours, but all the time in ASB has taught me to manage both my academics and leadership positions.

Q&A

with ASB President

WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO THE CLUBS ON CAMPUS? Well, ASB puts on Club Rush every year, which was held this past September. Club Rush is an event where students get the opportunity to join the clubs they are interested in and club leaders get the opportunity to personally recruit members through demonstrations (posters/signs/word of mouth). It was a huge success, as there were a little over 90 diverse clubs that participated. After Club Rush, ASB’s role is to validate the clubs and make sure that they keep up with their requirements.

WHAT CLUBS ARE YOU ACTIVELY INVOLVED WITH? I am involved in several clubs (including Kiwin’s, Korean Club, NHS), but the one I am most actively involved in would be Peer Counseling. Peer Counseling is an amazing club with a group of social, amiable students give effort to be good models on campus and help in a variety of ways- from tutoring students who are struggling academically to counseling students in conflict.

Spanish Club Mission: To promote Spanish and Latino language and culture. Members: 20 Contact: Profesora Lecakes-Jones hlecakes@powayusd.com

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES CLUBS PUT ON THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THAT STUDENTS LOOK FORWARD TO? Well, all the clubs on campus put on different events and volunteer opportunities that students look forward to. This includes the popular event Filipino Culture Night by the Mabuhay Club, Peer Counseling Tailgate, and Flashback by the Musicians Club.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR AS ASB PRESIDENT AND HOW DO THE CLUBS ASSIST IN ALLOWING YOU TO MEET THOSE GOALS? My goals this year as ASB president include being a better leader and promoting a better mood around campus, and clubs definitely assist in meeting these goals. Clubs are such an awesome way for students to meet new people and get involved with the school, and joining them helps create a fun, enjoyable atmosphere around campus.

IS THERE A CLUB THAT IS NOT YET ON CAMPUS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE ESTABLISHED? This year, I actually created a club myself, because I wanted to see it established on this campus. It’s called Random Acts of Kindness (RAOK), and it is a club created primarily to instill a more positive atmosphere on the campus and in the community by performing random acts of kindness. I am very excited to lead this club, because I truly feel that it will positively benefit this campus.

DOES ASB INTERACT WITH OTHER SCHOOLS’ ASB CLUBS? Yes, we do! We (ASBs in the district) actually meet up a couple times a year. Towards the end of the last school year, our ASB actually joined several other ASBs at Del Norte High School, and we had the opportunity to bond as leaders and get advice from other schools. I also got to attend an ASB Conference in Mission Hills in October, where I will get to communicate with the ASB presidents from several different schools.

WHAT ARE THE MAJOR EVENTS ASB IS HOSTING THIS SCHOOL YEAR? The most major event coming up right now is Homecoming. We are actually starting something new this year, where we are holding the dance outside instead of in the gym and have food trucks (having food at Homecoming is a first for RBHS!). The dance will have elements from a circus/carnival, and there will be a lot of good food and music. We are really excited for the final result. Other major events ASB is hosting include PowderPuff (a girls football competition), MCF (Multi-Cultural Fair), Winter Formal, Prom, and several others.

PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW. People may not know that in entering high school, I never imagined myself becoming ASB president. Opportunity threw itself at me, and I have never been more thankful. I cannot imagine myself not being involved in ASB, as ASB defines a huge part of my high school career.

K

ira Bender, a Del Norte High School (DNHS) student and resident of Rancho Bernardo, has been awarded one of approximately 625 National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarships for the 2013-2014 school year. The NSLI-Y program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly-taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. NSLI-Y offers overseas study opportunities in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Russian and Turkish. The scholarship enables Kira to study Chinese in China for the summer. The scholarship covers all program costs for participants including domestic and international travel, tuition and related academic preparation, language testing, educational and cultural activities focused on language learning, orientations, meals and accommodations with a host family. Launched as part of a US government initiative in 2006, NSLI-Y seeks to increase Americans’ capacity to engage with native speakers of critical languages by providing formal instruction and informal language practice in an immersion environment. Educational and cultural activities are designed to promote language learning and build mutual understanding and long-lasting relationships. The goals of the NSLI-Y program include sparking a life-long

interest in foreign languages and cultures, and developing a corps of young Americans with the skills necessary to advance international dialogue in the private, academic or government sectors. Participants will build upon the foundations developed through person-to-person relationships while abroad. Through her participation in the program, Kira will serve as a citizen diplomat while developing the skills necessary to be a leader in the global community. Kira is currently studying Mandarin Chinese at DNHS, and she plans to continue her studies at the college level. She has yet to decide her major in college, but she is certain it will be something in the STEM field, and intends to apply her language skills towards promoting a more unified, global community. NSLI-Y is administered by American Councils for International Education in cooperation with AFS-USA, American Cultural Exchange Service, Americans Promoting Study Abroad, AMIDEAST, iEARN-USA, Legacy International, and Russian American Foundation. Applications for 2014-2015 NSLI-Y programs are expected to be available in the early fall. The NSLI-Y program is open to anyone who is interested in pursuing a language in the hopes to promote positive change for the future at an international level. It all begins with an online application submission. Visit at www.nsliforyouth.org to learn more or to apply. 

Isis Physical Therapy Provides One-on-One Care for Each and Every Patient by MICHELLE TREMBLAY

hen Dr. Vanessa Jackson, DPT, opened ISIS Physical Therapy five years ago, it was to fill a need in the community for comprehensive physical therapy treatment. “We are motivated every day by the success stories of our patients and by giving them a trustworthy and caring resource when they are dealing with injuries or pain,” Dr. Pansky said. ISIS specializes in treating orthopedic problems, such as lower back and mid-back pain, knee and ankle pain, shoulder rehab, and neck & TMJ issues (jaw pain). ISIS successfully treats sport injuries, too. Athletes from baseball, softball, track and field, soccer, volleyball, football and many other sports have all returned to the field healthier. ISIS also offers Fit at The Tee, a golfspecific treatment and training program that helps improve golfers of all skill levels; www.fitatthetee.com. ISIS patients receive a 90- to 120-minute initial visit. “Every session thereafter is 60 to 90 minutes. We treat patients as individuals with unique needs. We also take pride in finding the root cause of each patient’s problem so that the pain being experienced goes away and stays away,” Dr. Jackson said. Individualized care and innovative solutions are paramount at ISIS, where the commitment is to using hands-on techniques and the newest research-supported equipment to help patients feel better as soon as possible. “From your first visit on, you will know exactly what is going on with

Senioritis: An Epidemic Gripping the Class of 2014

S

enioritis has smacked the class of 2014 with the full force of Miley Cyrus at the VMAs. True, the balmy summer days are over, but the level of lethargy is on a roller coaster that only goes up. The signs are everywhere. “We’re seniors!” In a year we will be free, independent, unrestrained. We are the top predators in the proverbial high school food chain. We throw caution to the wind. We place the Breaking Bad finale over the demands of AP Psychology because seriously, we are seniors and we are entitled to know right now if Walter is going to be [spoiler omitted]. And besides, Mr. Inumerable is totally a Breaking Bad fan. But this is the most important year of our high school career. These are the make-it or break-it days. As Principal Lemaster reiterated in his speech to government and civics classes in September, we must still consider the gravity of their day-to-day actions, whether or not they would possibly entail expulsion, suspension, or transfer. And as the counselors passed out the senior calendars that same month, we were again reminded of the academic responsibilities that we carry on our shoulders. And oh, college season! That which prevents us from the fun things in life – we wait on our show finales, our dates, our movies because not

only is there Psych homework to finish, but there’s also 250 to 650 count essays to cry over. I know, the mouse hovers dejectedly over that enticing Megashare link, that YouTube video, that Reddit page, but there are transcripts to send, recommendations to ask for, and interviews to go to. But this is our year, and because this is our year, we can’t screw up. We’re so near the finish line of a race, but that doesn’t mean we stop, throw up our hands, and scream “We’re done!” And certainly any cross country or track runner would tell you the same. (And geez, what a waste of the most sweaty minutes of your life that would be.) We aren’t done yet. We swallow the bitter pills of senior year to lessen the effects of senioritis. We keep marching on to cross that victory line. We finish strong so that when we get our diplomas in our Bronco Blue caps and gowns, we are proud that we are going to college, that we didn’t do anything morally and literally stupid, and that we reined in our desire to binge-watch How I Met Your Mother 24/7. And in the moment in June, we will feel infinite. We can’t stop senioritis, but we won’t stop being awesome. ¢ Susan Shen is a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School. She participated in a summer internship with 92128 Magazine and is the ‘Bronco Insider’ for the 2013-2014 school year. She can be contacted at info@92128magazine.com.

WINTER FUN

SAN DIEGOSTYLE A Guide to Fun in the Wintertime Sun by Susan Shen

W

hile much of the country is under gray skies and blankets of sleet and snow, San Diegans are enjoying sunshine and mild temperatures. Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate the winter months San Diego-style!

That’s So San Diego

Searching for the Seasons

Take a stroll through Balboa Park to admire the beautiful architecture and holiday decorations.

Experience a winter wonderland high atop Mount Laguna, only a onehour drive from San Diego. If the conditions are right, sledding and snowball fights may ensue.

Add a twist to a trip to the beach by collecting seashells to make unique gifts or to decorate holiday packages. For a special treat, walk along the cliffs of Point Loma to see migrating gray whales headed south for breeding season.

Drive up to the top of Mt. Soledad in La Jolla for a birds-eye view of the city aglow with holiday light displays.

Holiday Happenings

Winter in San Diego includes an abundance of holiday-themed festivals, parades and awe-inspiring spectacles. Parades include the Mother Goose Parade in El Cajon (Nov. 24), the Gaslamp Holiday Pet Parade (Dec. 8), and the stunning San Diego Bay Parade of Lights (Dec. 8 and 15). The Surfing Santa event at Seaport Village (Nov. 24), December Nights in Balboa Park (Dec. 6 and 7), and Christmas in the Park in Poway (Dec. 14) are always a hit for kids and adults alike, featuring food, crafts, holiday treats and activities.

52 • 92128Magazine.com • November | December 2013

Sometimes a little peek at the changing of the seasons is required to get into the holiday spirit. Take a drive up to Julian for gorgeous fall colors and maybe even snow during December and January. Don’t forget to order a cup of hot apple cider and a piece of apple pie!

It (Almost) Never Rains in San Diego

On the rare occasion that it rains, there are plenty of indoor activities that appeal to a variety of interests. See an IMAX film at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and then visit one of the 15 major museums in Balboa Park. Take the trolley downtown and explore the New Children’s Museum or head to the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum in Escondido. For sports enthusiasts, skate at one of several of San Diego’s indoor ice rinks, or reach new heights at an indoor rock climbing gym. Regardless of the weather, it is not hard to experience some wintertime fun in San Diego. 

Replacing an Old Air Conditioning System Can Save Energy and Cut Long-term Costs For Homeowners by JENNIFER FRAKES

M

JMP Heating and Air At-A-Glance

ost homeowners will admit that even though the weather in San Diego is relatively mild year-round, their air conditioning systems definitely get a workout in the hotter summer months. According to Jason Purgason of JPM Heating & Air, Inc., air conditioning systems last for only about 18 to 20 years before needing to be replaced. And even if the system isn’t that old, homeowners who notice their air conditioning systems are not operating at the same level at the end of summer as they were in June may also want to consult with a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professional. “Typically, a simple diagnostic of a unit’s age and condition will give insight into whether or not a system needs to be replaced,” explained Purgason. Although replacing an air conditioning system may seem more costly than simply repairing an older unit, oftentimes newer systems are more cost and energy efficient, leading to greater savings in the longterm. “Newer systems can have less impact on the environment and on the homeowner’s budget. Replacing a faulty unit cannot only improve the efficiency of your heating or cooling unit, but also reduce the day-to-day costs of running one,” stated Purgason. Newer units tend to be more

accurate and user-friendly, enabling homeowners to customize settings for optimum energy and cost savings. In addition, homeowners who purchase high efficiency units may receive tax benefits for reducing their carbon footprint. Before deciding to replace an air conditioning system, it is important to work with an HVAC professional to determine what system will work best in the home. “When replacing a system, the size of the home, usage style, geographic location and the insulation capability of your home are all things to be considered,” said Purgason. In other words, the new system must be compatible with the needs of the individual homeowner and accommodate the living space where it will be used. Most HVAC companies will remove old units when replacing it with a new one. The old units are typically taken to a recycling center for scrap metal and parts. And regardless of whether a homeowner decides to install a new air conditioning system or stick with their old one, changing the filter is essential. Purgason recommends performing this easy, do-it-yourself task up to four times per year for older systems and at least twice per year for newer systems. 

After School Magazine Partners With ZCode to Showcase Youth

S

A special submission from the ASES after school program students at Mesa Verde Middle School

tudents from the Mesa Verde Middle School ASES, an after school program, have been given the rare opportunity to join forces with San Diego’s very own ZCode Magazines and go behind the scenes to learn the ins and outs of magazine creation. The After School Education and Safety (ASES) program is a grant-funded program that provides a fun, safe, stimulating environment for students whose parents cannot be home when their children return from school. Studies show that participation in the ASES Program increases students’ attachment to their schools, improves test scores, and keeps kids out of trouble. One of the ways the ASES program at Mesa Verde Middle School keeps students engaged is by offering enrichment clubs such as Comic Construction, Duct Tape Fashion, and Master Chefs that are not only fun, but also educational. The Daily Fluff is a monthly magazine consisting of articles, comics, artwork, and stories that have been submitted by the students in the ASES program. This year students get to be directly involved with the creation of the magazine which include writing articles, taking photos, and designing the layouts.

Aspiring writer, Nika Shlopov (6 th Grade), comments that she is really looking forward to working on the magazine this year. “I am new to the program so I’m excited to start writing articles and learn how to design,” said Shlopov. According to the website, ZCode Magazines is a privately owned, multi-media company based in the 4S Ranch in San Diego. The company brings a fresh innovative take on community magazines as well as related websites and newsletters. With the help of ZCode, The Daily Fluff hopes to showcase the many talented students in the North County community. ASES Site Coordinator, Monica Racicot, is enjoying watching the magazine grow into something much bigger. “We’re so thrilled to be working with ZCode magazine,” she said. “Not only will The Daily Fluff get some much needed attention, but the students will come away with transferrable skills that will carry on in to the workplace later in life.” For more information about the After School Education and Safety (ASES) program please visit the Poway Unified School District website at www.powayusd.com. If you’d like to learn more about The Daily Fluff contact Monica Racicot at 858-472-1689. 

few years after moving to Oaks North, the background Marla Cruz had in fire prevention and disaster recovery and emergency services was desperately needed due to the 2007 fires. First Aid, CPR and emergency response trained by the American Red Cross, Marla had worked in fire prevention for the Vancouver Fire Department and as the Emergency Services Specialist for the American Red Cross. Fortunately for the local community, Marla had signed on with the local ARC as a volunteer in disaster services and as a DSHR member for national response once she moved here. Marla explained, “I was deployed locally during the 2007 fires where I ended up working for Interfaith Community Services for two years as the Director of Disaster Services and for the RB United Fire Recovery Center teaching disaster preparedness to seniors.” Currently, Marla, a proud mother of four and grandmother of six, supports her community in myriad ways. Because she loves working

with seniors, she is the Activity and Membership Director at the Ed Brown Senior Center and participated in the center’s October Health and Fitness Fair that included a seminar on elder abuse. Desirous of honoring her country, she has been the Director of the Community Fair for the Spirit of the Fourth for the last three years. Locally she is also the current secretary on the RB Community Council, the district coordinator for the Oaks North Neighborhood Watch, the event organizer for the RB Tastings Festival for the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society and an usher for Humphrey’s Concerts. Marla feels volunteers are needed to help seniors, children and animals. Anyone unsure how to help could always contact the neighborhood watch. Marla shared, “It’s rewarding to know I can make a difference in my community just by providing my time, training, skills and experience.” Favorite local places for Marla include Webb Park, the Bernardo Winery and the Ed Brown Center. Marla divulged, “I love to visit the ducks and turtles at Webb Park, and I have many four-legged friends who visit me at the Ed Brown Center for treats!” Marla also enjoys the ocean, music and concerts, event planning, traveling and spending time with her family. Her bucket list includes seeing specific bands, jumping out of an airplane and traveling cross country with her sister next year. ¢

Will There be Another Buying Frenzy in 2013? 2013

has seen a remarkable increase in homes sold in 92130 and many seller’s jumped on the bandwagon. Houses in Carmel Valley were listed and sold, in just a few days, at list price and in many cases over list price with multiple offers. We were thrilled for our clients and our selling strategies made us look brilliant. We clearly were in a seller’s market and everyone was happy. A seller’s market is where houses are in demand and inventory is low. This occurs when there are not enough homes to satisfy the number of buyers in the market. As a result, sellers increase their asking prices and the buyers are willing to pay more due to limited options. However, in the last few weeks we’ve seen a market shift – a shift towards the buyer’s market. Homes are currently staying on the market (MLS) for a longer period of time. Why? There were a larger number of homes available after the spring and summer buying blitz. Also, buyers are becoming more selective and want to ensure that the properties they are buying are worth their value and the homes are in pristine shape.

This shift has stunned many sellers having them question what happened to the multiple offers. The fall of 2013 should see sellers and buyers connecting once again. Why? Why not. If a seller is willing to sell and a buyer is willing to buy, let’s make a deal. It’s all about supply and demand. There’s plenty of inventory (supply), and there are still plenty of buyers (demand). We should see another buying frenzy since prices have stabilized and interest rates are still low. Sellers who are eager to move and have reduced their asking price, many times over a period of months, may be more willing to accept an offer they previously would not have entertained. Sellers have earned the right to see offers – Make one! 
