It’s Boat Time
P U B L I S HE R

Jessica Breaux ASSO C IAT E E DI TO R S
I
’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch out and Derrick Breaux my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. Publisher When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or repair, Dave’s your man. He can be reached at 619-913-0420. THE
Trecker TWINS
Riley and Ryan Trecker Grew Up at Rancho Bernardo High School by LAINEY KRAL
T
he Trecker twins are following in their family footsteps and making their mark on Rancho Bernardo. Sister Riley and brother Ryan moved to Carmel Mountain – with their parents Jill and Kurt – 13-and-a-half years ago. “There are lots of fun places close by,” Riley shared. Ryan added, “There’s lots to do, and there’s many nice people.” They’ve been “attending” Rancho Bernardo High School for a lot longer than the average student. “My husband Kurt has been a teacher at RB High School for 17 years. Our kids have literally grown up there, and now they are freshman,” Jill said. “When they were babies, they met the English teachers they each had last semester. I brought them to visit the yearbook class when they were on deadline. And they spent hours in the stadium stands watching their dad coach RB soccer year after year.”

Both Riley and Ryan say that seeing their friends are their favorite part of school, and both plan to attend four-year universities after graduation. But as Riley explained, people are often surprised to learn they’re twins. “They’re surprised because he and I look nothing alike!” she said. They’re keen to pursue their individual passions. Riley started Pop Warner Cheer eight years ago, and is now flying high on the JV cheer team at RBHS. “I’m an NCA National Champion and two-time Summit Finalist,” she said. She’s also taken her talents to track and field, and is learning the pole vault. Ryan enjoys track too – especially the 1600 meter – along with cross country and soccer. “I’ve been playing soccer for my whole life, and eighth grade cross country got me interested in high school cross country,” Ryan said. With his long background in soccer and experience helping coach a rec soccer team, it’s no surprise he was a captain on the freshman soccer team. Ryan also credits his parents for his success, saying, “They’ve pushed me to be the best student and athlete I can be.” “It’s like a dream come true to watch our Trecker twins become RB Broncos,” Jill said, “but now we see how fast time flies and want to just enjoy their high school years.”

YO U R N E I G H B O R ’ S R E C I P E
INGREDIENTS ½ 13 / ¾ 13 / 1 1
cup egg whites cup almond milk cup rolled oats cup blueberries, divided teaspoon baking powder pinch xanthan gum nonstick cooking spray sweetener of your choice, to taste
Toppings peanut butter, optional (but highly suggested) maple syrup
DIRECTIONS 1.
2.
3. 4.
5.
6. 7. 8.
Combine all ingredients in your blender or food processor. Include half of your 1/3 cup blueberries in the blender mixture, and put the rest aside for now. Blend ingredients until your mixture is the consistency of a thick batter. If your blender or food processor has a “batter” option, use that. Otherwise 30 seconds is probably sufficient. Spray your pan lightly and pour your batter into the pan. Sprinkle in a few of your remaining blueberries into the pancake batter, but be sure to save some for your second pancake. Cook on medium heat for approximately 3 minutes. Keep a close eye on your pancake, checking every few minutes for a golden brown bottom. With a spatula, flip when ready. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for your second pancake. Once ready, plate your delicious creation and marvel at your new breakfasting skills. Optional: top your pancakes with peanut butter (my favorite) or (the more traditional option) maple syrup.
MAKES: 2 pancakes • TOTAL TIME: 15-20 minutes

ABOUT THE CHEF CHEF: Randi Cantrell PROFESSION: ZCode Media Associate Editor FAMILY: Husband – Collin; Cat – Kikka; Dog – Kiba HOBBIES & INTERESTS: Writing, strength training/fitness, reading, traveling FAVORITE LOCAL ACTIVITY: Hiking, training at Sweathaus ABOUT THE RECIPE: As a fitness enthusiast, I’m often looking for
healthier or macro-friendly alternatives to my favorite foods. I adapted this recipe from somewhere long ago, but have changed it so much over time that I now consider it my own. It’s easy to make and can be changed according to the season – skip the blueberries and add pumpkin puree instead, if that’s your jam. While they may not be like any pancake you’re used to, I think you’ll enjoy what they bring to the table. Perfect as a pre-workout breakfast! ABOUT THE CHEF: A San Diego native and word lover since birth, I think it’s pretty great that I get to spend my weekdays learning about the amazing residents of North County and spotlighting them in ZCode’s community magazines. During the weekend, I spend my time writing, exploring new spots for coffee or food, and just generally trying to take in more sunshine. ¢

“W
ith a coach as a husband,” said Rancho Bernardo mom Holly Lecakes-Jones, “this predisposes one to a life of sports.” Donald Jones is head coach for RB High School’s Track and Field program, and their three children, Katy (30, RB class of 2004), Devin (18, RB class of 2016), and Alina (16, upcoming 2018 class), played, plays, and are involved in a myriad of athletic activities. From track and field to volleyball, football, and basketball, “our season never ends,” Holly said. “We are continually in a competition of some kind.” Don’s teams have won 12 San Diego Section CIF titles and 33 Palomar League titles. Don and Holly met at RB High. “He gave me a heart diagram from his health class as a valentine,”
Holly laughed. “It worked!” Her schooling came from Cal State Long Beach, with credentials in Spanish and English as a Second Language. She’s been teaching at RBHS since 1991, and was Teacher of the Year in 2011-12. Don’s Health, PE, Math and Science credentials come from SDSU. He’s been a teacher in the Poway Unified School District since 1984, and he’s one of the founding teachers at RBHS. Interestingly, their oldest daughter Katy’s first teaching position was in Don’s old elementary school. Her first room was his second grade classroom! When asked what would most surprise readers about the family, Holly grinned, “that we don’t pitch a tent on RB’s campus and sleep at school because we are here so much!” To give back to the world and their beloved RB community, the family gives their time and resources to three different charities. The Holy Innocent’s Hospital in Uganda is one; the Get on the Bus program, which brings children and their caregivers from throughout California to visit their mothers and fathers in prison is another; and finally the San Diego Breath of Hope lung cancer organization, whose run/walk is coming up in April. Living in the High Country West community of Rancho Bernardo since 2014, Holly feels that “RB has a small town feel that we missed.” The Lecakes-Jones family always comes together over home-cooked meals, making the time each night to sit and enjoy a good meal and conversation. “Rancho Bernardo is a wonderful place to live and work,” Holly shared. “We have been lucky to live here and raise our children in this neighborhood.”

L
ocal photographer Morgan Macedo will be launching her new We Are Strong & Beautiful project this summer. The project was inspired by Morgan’s friend Annabell, who is a stage 3B breast cancer survivor. Annabell’s experience opened Morgan’s eyes to the struggles that many women with breast cancer go through. “Life has not been easy for this beautiful young woman when it comes to her health, but she is a fighter and nothing has ever been able to break her down,” said Morgan. We Are Strong & Beautiful is a way for women who have won their fight or continue to fight breast cancer to share their
personal stories and be admired for their beauty and strength. Starting this summer, Morgan will choose one woman per month to showcase on her website, Macedo Images. Once chosen, a free photoshoot will be scheduled and art will be created for that woman’s gallery. The chosen

Woman of the Year
LOCAL SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN’S ADVOCATE HONORED
A
ssemblymember Brian Maienschein recently honored Terri Colachis as the 2017 Woman of the Year for the 77th Assembly District in recognition of her dedication and volunteer work to benefit developmentally disabled children in the community. Terri is the board chair of San Diego-Imperial Counties Developmental Services, Inc., an organization that works with the Department of Developmental Services in helping people with developmental disabilities obtain improved living conditions. She is also the president of the Association of Regional Center Agencies, representing the 21 independent, nonprofit California Regional Centers which advocate on behalf of and provide necessary services to 300,000 people with developmental disabilities across the state.
Terri and her husband Gus have lived in the 77th Assembly District for over 32 years. Terri’s daughter Shea, one of her six children, was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old and is non-verbal. Her personal experience with a developmental disability inspired her to dedicate her life to help families in similar situations. “Terri is an exemplary volunteer and a devoted parent to her daughter Shea,” said Assemblymember Maienschein. “Her passionate support of those who are often overlooked and would otherwise have no voice in society is commendable.” Established in 1987 to help commemorate Women’s History Month, the Woman of the Year honor has become an annual tradition as part of the State Assembly’s efforts to celebrate California’s extraordinary women. Honorees are presented with a framed certificate from the State Assembly recognizing their outstanding contributions. ¢

Coping with Seasonal Allergies Springtime brings blue skies, colorful flowers— and seasonal allergies. If you’re among the 50 million people who suffer from sneezing, itchy and watery eyes brought on by seasonal allergies, the following tips might help you get through the next few months:
medications to treat seasonal allergies, including antihistamines and decongestants. Many OTCs are powerful drugs once available by prescription only, so read the labels carefully and only choose the drug that’s appropriate for your symptoms. Be aware of possible side effects and drug/food interactions. For example, antihistamines can cause drowsiness. Decongestants can increase blood pressure.
Avoid allergy triggers (aka allergens) You can’t avoid allergy triggers entirely but you can take steps to lessen your exposure. For example, • Check the daily pollen report and plan accordingly. Avoid running errands late mornings and early afternoons, when pollen counts are highest. • Switch your car’s air conditioning from “fresh” to “recirculate.” • Have your kids bathe and wash their hair before bedtime, to avoid pollen from rubbing onto their pillows and bedding. • Pollen sticks to animal fur. If your pet has been outdoors all day, rub down its fur with a towel before allowing it indoors.
When to see the doctor See your Primary Care Physician (PCP) if your allergy symptoms are severe; the treatment you’re using no longer works; you develop hives, rash, a fever, or severe sinus pressure; or you’re suffering from allergic asthma triggered by pollen or mold.Your PCP can prescribe prescription medications or refer you to an allergy specialist, such as an Ear Nose and Throat doctor or an Immunologist.
Over-the counter (OTC) medications Your local pharmacy carries a wide selection of OTC
SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION if you develop anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition.
If you have preexisting medical conditions, consult with your health care provider before taking any OTC medications or supplements.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER
In the of others Cub Scout Leader Faith Halterman Has Turned Tragedy into Opportunity by SAMANTHA EDWARDS | photos by Spark Photography
F
aith Halterman truly embodies what it means to be a leader and positive role model. As the committee chair for 92128’s Cub Scout Pack 624, which serves children from several Carmel Mountain Ranch area elementary schools, Faith plans events such as camping, field trips, and other activities, ensuring that the Pack is thriving and serving the needs of families in the community. She is also a mother to sons Nathan and Adam and cats Boomer, Ginger, and Mochi. While Faith currently dedicates countless hours to her role as a Scout leader, it was not always part of her initial “Tour Plan,” as she puts it, to be so involved with the organization. In October 2015, Faith’s husband unexpectedly passed away after recovering from brain surgery. Despite the darkness she and her sons felt in those early hours, something beautiful happened – Pack families took turns delivering meals every night for a month, bringing toys for Nathan and Adam, flowers and treats for Faith, and continually stopping by to check on them. “I had never felt such a feeling of support and family before!” Faith shared. “Though I did not know how at the time, I knew that I wanted to give back, be there for others, and help provide that same feeling of support for others.” So just a few months later, Faith joined Pack 624 and hasn’t looked back since. “I love watching both of my sons laugh and have pure fun on Scouting events,” she said. “We’re bonding as a family and creating new happy memories, and I have the opportunity to be a role model in a capacity for my sons that I never thought was possible.” In fact, it was only recently that Faith realized how much she was actually gaining by giving her time to Scouting, an experience she feels is perfectly captured in Gandhi’s quote: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Group: Mission:

Aside from her volunteer work with Cub Scouts, Faith has been a systems engineer at BAE Systems in Rancho Bernardo for 20 years, a position that has afforded her opportunities to travel and work with great teams. In their free time, Faith, Nathan, and Adam enjoy going to local parks, ice cream shops, and farmers markets. This admirable mother and volunteer has certainly gotten lost in serving others – finding herself and making a positive impact on many lives along the way. 32 • 92128MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2017

Inaugural Poodles on Parade
Mission Federal ArtWalk
The Rancho Bernardo Spirit of the Fourth Committee is hosting its inaugural Poodles on Parade event on Saturday, May 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Webb Park. Those with standard poodles can register their dogs to participate in the parade and contests including best hairdo, best trick, and best costume. People with any breed of dog, however, are welcome to attend and enjoy watching the parade, demonstrations, over 30 exhibits, food trucks, raffles, and more. There will be other pre- and post-event festivities throughout the weekend as well. Spirit of the Fourth has organized RB’s popular Fourth of July celebration for the past 48 years, holding various events throughout the year to help raise funds to support the committee. Past fundraising events include RB Idol, Golden Idol, and miniature golf, among others. To learn more about Poodles on Parade visit www.spiritofthefourth.org/poodlesonparade.html.
92128 resident Starla Coropassi and local organization Visual Arts Group of North County will be among more than 350 local, national, and international artists participating in the 33rd Annual Mission Federal ArtWalk in Little Italy on April 29 and 30 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The free weekend-long event attracts thousands of visitors each year to enjoy art in every medium, along with live music and dance performances, interactive art activities, street food, and family friendly craft projects at KidsWalk. This year’s theme is “Vivid Expression.” Cortopassi will showcase her jewelry, printmaking, and silkscreen creations, and Visual Arts Group of North County will present a range of work from acrylic and watercolor to collage and textiles. “Mission Federal ArtWalk is for everyone – serious collectors, first-time art buyers, families, and visitors to San Diego,” said Director Sandi Cottrell. “Each year, one of our goals is to ensure attendees feel like they can be a part of the art. We encourage attendees to express themselves throughout the weekend and find their inner artist, which exists in all of us.” For more information go to www.artwalksandiego.org.
RBHS Grad Nite Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) will host its annual Grad Nite, a safe and sober celebration for seniors on graduation night in June. Entertainment will include games, rock climbing walls, a photo booth, music, food, and non-alcoholic beverages. The planning and development for the event is a student-wide effort. Underclassman students from all departments collaborate to help put the event together, from designing to building and decorating. “This takes a lot of the set building responsibilities off parents and generates undergraduates’ interest in and excitement for Grad Nite,” said Grad Nite Chair Alicia Simmons. “When they become seniors, they know their peers will be planning a celebration for them. It is a whole new meaning for Bronco Spirit.” RBHS requires at least $20,000 to produce the event. Upcoming fundraisers include a shred-a-thon and e-waste recycling event at the school on May 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Community members are also welcome to help construct and decorate the gym on June 3 and 4. Bunny Johnstone of Rancho Bernardo finished in second place in the final match. The WGA includes both an 18-hole group and a Half Rounder, or nine-hole, group. Both groups play on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and often enjoy luncheons and other social gatherings together. PUSD Scores High on State Dashboard The California Department of Education recently released new evaluation rubrics and the California School Dashboard as a way to measure student performance and give a more comprehensive look at overall district and school performance. The rubrics, which will be rolled out gradually, analyze 10 indicators of student performance: graduation rates; English language arts and math; parent engagement; school climate; progress of English learners; college and career readiness; implementation of state standards; services, materials, and facilities; chronic absenteeism; and suspension rates. Poway Unified School District (PUSD) scored at the highest possible levels in several areas, including graduation rates and student performance in English language arts and math for third through eighth grade. PUSD also met the state target in reducing the number of students suspended during the year and in measuring how well English language learners are progressing. Full Dashboard results will be reported this fall. Learn more at www.caschooldashboard.org.

Dr. Thurston shared, “In addition to creating beautiful smiles, patient education is of the utmost importance throughout treatment.” Dr. Eitzen added, “The ability to combine orthodontic visits with dental care and hygienist appointments reinforces the preventive focus of our practice.” Although prevention is important, the doctors realize that satisfying diverse age groups requires varied environments. “Psychological and physical needs vary, and age-appropriate care and individualized treatment are essential to assure a comfortable and positive experience,” Dr. Lam noted. “But since no one minds a distraction during dental treatment, we have equipped all our chairs with overhead entertainment systems.”

or 30 years, the award-winning dance academy and company Southern California Ballet has been educating young dancers in the Rancho Bernardo, Poway, and Rancho Peñasquitos area in the art of ballet and other dance styles. This summer SCB will offer the Discover Dance Camp series for the youngest dancers and intensive training for the advanced ballerinas. “We will be in full swing with ongoing afternoon classes and preparing for our September production of Hansel and Gretel; however, in the camps we want to introduce new dancers to our curriculum in a fun and educational manner,” said Executive Director Kate Hirsh. The Discover Dance Camp series and the junior and senior intensives will focus activities and training based on a weekly theme. Week one will be the romantic ballet Giselle, week two the classical story of The Sleeping Beauty, and the final week will explore the virtuosic ballet Swan Lake. Each week will culminate with an in-studio presentation for the parents to enjoy. The Discover Dance Camp for ages four to eight runs from June 12 to 30 and takes place in the mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., with
an option to bring a bagged lunch and eat with friends until 1 p.m. The young dancers will enjoy crafts including making props for their dances and painting scenery for the ballets. Teachers will also introduce other more contemporary dance styles, freedom of movement, and dancing in groups. Southern California Ballet’s newly appointed Artistic Director Martha Leebolt has programmed an exceptional training plan from July 10 to 28 for dancers aged nine years to pre-college. The international award-winning ballerina will teach and inspire the dancers to higher heights with daily classes in ballet, repertoire, conditioning, and stretching complemented by other master teachers of jazz, contemporary, and character. Clinics will teach techniques for better turns and jumps; applying stage make-up; preparing and maintaining pointe shoes; and making a ballet bun in your hair. SCB’s summer program is brought to life by faculty with degrees and credentials specific to teaching dance. To learn more visit www.SouthernCaliforniaBallet.org or call 858-674-1006. OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS N
ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day-camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, traditional camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Their three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates as a licensed, organized San Diego camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. The Little Rookies division serves ages 4 to 6, and AllStar Baseball and Softball serves ages 7 to 12. Full-day, half-day, and extended options are available to fit any family schedule at locations throughout San Diego. “My goal is for each player to first have an enjoyable experience, learn all the great fundamentals of the game the right way, and round themselves out to become the complete player by playing in a live game each day,” said Coach Kurtis Swanberg, owner of Little Rookies. Young players learn the fundamentals with state-ofthe-art equipment – hitting and throwing nets, baseball and softball pitching machines, portable pitching mounds, a 60 by 15-foot batting cage, and more. Every afternoon is a chance to put those fundamentals into practice with daily live games. The team spirit and camaraderie solidify the experience. “The players and families look forward to summer camp every year, and it’s a big reunion of players, friends, families, and coaches,” said Coach Kurtis. “It’s amazing to see the kids’ growth each summer as they move up in divisions.” As Brad Ausmus, Manager of the Detroit Tigers, put it, “Coach Kurtis teaches each student valuable fundamental work that connects them to the game and creates super confidence in all as they learn under him. MEDICAL GROUP PROFILE
GRAYBILL
MEDICAL GROUP
Providing San Marcos Residents With Top-Notch Family Medicine Services
by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos provided by Graybill Medical Group
G
raybill Medical Group, North County’s largest independent multi-specialty medical group and a member of the award-winning Sharp Community Medical Group, is likely located just around the corner from where you live or work. With 14 offices in the area, including San Marcos, Escondido, Oceanside, Tri-City, Sabre Springs, Ramona, Valley Center, Fallbrook, and Temecula, the practice has over 80 physicians and practitioners ranging from primary care and specialty care to urgent care and radiology. Graybill Medical Group was founded in 1932 by Dr. Martin Graybill, a family physician located in Escondido. “At the time, Escondido was a small town of 3,500 people,” recalled Dr. Isela Penunuri, M.D., lead physician for Graybill Medical Group, San Marcos office. “The original practice was located on the second floor of what was then Escondido Hospital. Today we’re North County’s largest independent multispecialty medical group.” If that fact alone doesn’t make the practice stand out, perhaps, this will: “One of the most unique aspects of Graybill is our longevity,” stated Dr. Penunuri. “Many of our doctors have patients who were delivered by Dr. Graybill and many families have been with us for several generations. We’re often
told that, despite our size, we still have that friendly, small-town corporate culture that has characterized us for over 80 years.” Perhaps this is a reason that Graybill Medical Group, as the largest member of the Sharp Community Medical Group Independent Practice Association, has been awarded San Diego’s Best Medical Group, CAPG Standards of Excellence Award, and Integrated Healthcare Association Excellence in Healthcare. “To earn the IHA Award, physician organizations must rank in the top 50 percent for clinical quality, patient experience, and cost performance,” elaborated Dr. Penunuri. “Winners have to demonstrate strong quality and patient experience results while effectively managing costs.” Graybill Medical Group’s San Marcos office has three board certified family physicians and two certified physician assistants. Between all the medical team members, the patients can converse with their doctor in English, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian, and Mandarin. Dr. Penunuri, the lead physician for Graybill’s San Marcos office, earned her medical degree from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara Medical School in Mexico and served her internship at New York Medical College. She served her family medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin,
Eau Claire, where she was Chief Resident. Dr. Oksana Hirniak, D.O., is a board certified osteopathic physician, who, prior to her joining the Graybill Medical Group, provided care to active duty military and their family members at Miramar Air Station. Dr. Cheng (Oliver) Lee, M.D. is a board certified family medicine physician who completed his residency at Adventist Medical Center. “He is very involved in community service,” said Dr. Penunuri, “and currently provides sports physicals at San Marcos and Mission Hills high schools.” On that note, Graybill Medical Group makes a big effort to stay involved with the community. “We regularly attend community health events throughout the year, where we offer free blood pressure screenings,” shared Dr. Penunuri. “We also regularly hold free weight management support groups, classes on diabetes management, and Medicare 101.” ¢

Honoring Larry
LOCAL FOUNDATION KEEPS LARRY HIMMEL’S LEGACY ALIVE
T
he Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation continues to honor the memory of the late Larry Himmel, longtime KFMB/Channel 8 reporter, television broadcaster, San Diego personality, and 92127 resident, who passed away in 2014 after battling cancer. Larry believed that his purpose in life was to “make people feel better about the place they call home,” by connecting with people in the community and sharing their stories through the news. “My dad went all over San Diego and it felt like he was everyone’s neighbor,” said Larry’s son Miles Himmel. “We are just trying to continue that.” The foundation works to provide support and resources to deserving organizations and individuals in the spirit of Larry’s connection with the communities and people of San Diego County. Past projects include bringing Christmas gifts to homeless children at Interfaith Community Services, building a sandbox for children at Highland Ranch Elementary School in Poway, handing out free roses to friends and strangers on Valentine’s Day, and sponsoring a trip to SeaWorld for local kids, among others. “It’s awesome because we are a hands-on organization and we encourage everyone to be part of Larry’s Neighborhood!” Miles said.
Through each of these community efforts, Miles meets people whose lives were influenced by his father. “They have these vivid memories of my dad on TV or coming to an event they were at,” he said. “I don’t think I realized the impact he made until we started the foundation.” In September the foundation will host its first big fundraising event, a concert with local bands at Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. One hundred percent of all donations the foundation receives goes back into the community. “We want to continue to help people all around the community,” Miles affirmed. Wee Care Preschool Has Been Perfecting Early Childhood Education for 33 Years
A
fter searching for quality early childhood education with reasonable rates and finding very few options, a San Diego mom founded Wee Care Preschool back in 1983. With an overall mission to educate and care for young children in an age-appropriate, high-quality environment, Wee Care has now expanded to a total of three schools, including the newest in 4S Ranch. “Our 4S location was added in July, and we feel it’s truly one of the highest quality preschool facilities in all of San Diego,” said President Darla Suder, a 25-year veteran of the organization. “The building is modern and spacious, and the children have a lot of space to learn and play. The classrooms are large and feature skylights, which allows for a lot of natural light to come into the rooms.” The schools serve children 18 months to 5 years of age, and parents can try Wee Care for 25% off the already-low rates for the first three months. With flexible schedules including half or full days, and options to attend between two and five days per week, along with extended hours of operation, Wee Care strives to accommodate every parent’s schedule and childcare needs. or paying extra for meals. Enrichment classes including sports, dance, and gymnastics classes will be added in the new year. These classes will join an already extensive curriculum designed to foster a ‘whole child’ philosophy, in which children learn to interact and get along with others through playtime, while at the same time learning those important academic skills appropriate to their specific age group. Wee Care Preschools have a relaxed and happy atmosphere. “The children play outdoors and learn vital social skills while enjoying making art projects, singing, and reading during circle time with their friends and teachers,” Darla explained. “All of our staff members are background checked, have CPR/First Aid certifications, and have been educated in the field of early childhood education.” High-quality education, flexible days and hours, affordable prices, and parental convenience and peace of mind are the top tenets of a Wee Care experience. Open from 6 a.m to 6:30 p.m., children arrive in the morning to be greeted by their teachers and provided their morning meal. Then, in the classroom, they explore a wide range of learning experiences, including math, science, literature, sensory experience, dramatic play, music, dance, and different
languages. Healthy snacks and nutritious lunches are provided throughout the day. With a continuous goal of ensuring the finest, safest, and most fun experience for your children, look no further than Wee Care Preschool.

TUTORING CLUB PROFILE
Smart Choices Enrolling Students in Tutoring Club Improves Performance, Morale, and College Planning by LYDIA COBB | photos provided by Tutoring Club
E
veryone has the potential to succeed. Sometimes, more guidance is needed along the way. Tutoring Club teaches and tutors students from pre-K to high school seniors with any school subject, ACT/SAT preparation, and college planning. VP of Franchise Sales and Training Liam Powers explained, “Tutoring Club was started to offer students in the surrounding school districts an opportunity to get support in all coursework and subjects, tutoring as needed to achieve higher grades, preparation for future grade levels, and college planning.” Tutoring sessions are individualized based on the students’ needs. “One day might be math and another might be writing,” added Liam, “so we offer services to our students based on the assistance needed at that particular time.” Parents are encouraged to be involved through regular conferences that keep them informed of their child’s progress. It’s a warm and relaxed feeling inside the center – especially when students’
imaginations are sparked and they realize they can be creators of positive outcomes. Most of the tutors are college graduates with degrees in the fields they’re tutoring, though exceptional upper-level college students also tutor certain subjects. “We had a recent student who had received an NCAA scholarship offer, but did not receive a high enough score on her SAT to qualify for the scholarship,” mentioned Liam. RBHS MUSIC BOOSTERS FUNDRAISER SUPPORTS LOCAL STUDENTS
T
he Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) Music Boosters will host their annual Gala of Music fundraiser at the Maderas Golf Club on Sunday, April 23 at 4 p.m. The event is open to the community and will feature live music by The Mighty Untouchables, a catered dinner, cash bar, and silent auction. Proceeds from the fundraiser will provide support for the approximate 270 students in the band, color guard, and orchestra at RBHS.
Since 1990, the award-winning RBHS music program has helped students succeed in school and life. According to a study by the National Association for Music Education, music education programs help students improve their creativity, collaboration, confidence, and critical thinking skills. Approximately 1 in 10 of the over 2,300 students at RBHS participate in the instrumental music and color guard programs,
and over 90% of those students continue on to four-year colleges each year. Even further, the RBHS music program has won several championships at the local and state levels. The RBHS Music Boosters is a nonprofit organization that provides support and funding for students in the band, orchestra, and color guard programs. AN AFTERNOON
BY THE SEA
Discover Seaport Village + The Headquarters This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
I
f your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a lazy stroll along cobblestone pathways winding in and out of view of the Big Bay, ice cream cone in hand, while drenched in the warm Southern California sunshine, there’s a good chance we know where your head is at: Seaport Village. This 14-acre waterfront stretch is home to over 45 diverse shops, 17 eateries, and regular entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, free outdoor concerts on Sundays, and an old-fashioned carousel – open 365 days a year. Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village! ¢

Buzzing In to Win
T
here were three seconds on the clock, and RB High was two points down against Westview. The independent moderator asked the members of both teams to “name the art period characterized by seashells.” Senior Bryan Ugaz buzzed in and correctly answered “Rococo,” which won the game. “I think one of my best memories is that match we played against Westview last year,” Ugaz said. “I got the last question against Westview correct at the last minute, and we got to go to Championships because of that.” During an Academic League match, questions are posed by an independent moderator, and students can buzz in to answer the question. The types of questions asked are broken up into two categories: toss-ups and bonus. Toss-up questions are worth three points and are open for members on both teams
to answer, but they can only be answered by whoever buzzes in first. If that player answers correctly, his or her team is awarded three points and a bonus question where they have the chance to win between zero and five points. If they answer incorrectly, the opposing team is given a chance to answer the same question for the same number of points. For the varsity team, this pattern continues for 35 minutes, and the team with the most points wins. While the team practices together once a week with its advisor and history teacher Susan Michelena, much of their preparation comes from independent reading. Team member Omar El Sabrout added that unlike Quiz Bowl, another jeopardy-style competition, Academic League is more detail-oriented. “Quiz Bowl is more oriented in knowing deep knowledge, and it rewards players who know more about a subject,” El
Sabrout said. “In Academic League, there's only one clue, and you have to answer questions that typically require little knowledge but wide breadth.” This season was the first time the members of the current team beat one of their toughest competitors, Torrey Pines High School. “It was absolutely exhilarating,” Ugaz said. When asked what it takes to be on the Academic League team, Ugaz, who also competes in both Quiz Bowl and Academic League games, said that students should enjoy learning and accumulating knowledge in their free time. “As long as you have some interest in learning something outside of school, Academic League can be a good fit for you.” ¢ JANHAVI CHAFEKAR is a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School. Are You Thinking of Selling Your Home? I
f so, get it on the market now! You will be pleasantly surprised. San Diego’s inventory is at historic lows and buyer interest is at historic highs! The market here in San Diego has clearly shifted again. Currently, it’s a seller’s market, which in its simplest terms means a market in which more people want to buy than want to sell. In the sweet spot of pricing range, $700,000 to $1,200,000, there are less than 15 active homes for sale in 92128. This zip code is in a similar situation as most of San Diego because there are few, if any, new home developments. Because of this fact, current homeowners are worried about selling since the inventory is extremely low and because of the tight market. In the 92128 real estate market, sellers are getting multiple offers on their property listings and even some offers way above asking price. Even with mortgage rates creeping up a bit, bidding wars are happening and buyers are

Nevertheless, sellers in 92128 are a little bit reluctant to put their homes on the market. They’re worried they won’t find anything comparable to what they have now, and the prices they’re seeing are continually rising. We, Dan Conway & Associates, have seen a number of our sellers recently writing in listings that the sale of their property is contingent on them finding suitable housing to move into.
