FROM THE PUBLISHER VO L . 9, N O. 3 TM

Welcome to the ‘20s

I

t’s easy to get excited for a new year. Resolutions are made. People dream of what the new year holds. But a new decade is an entirely different beast. Welcome to the ‘20s! I can only imagine what this new decade will bring. The ‘20s will be the third decade of my adult life (considering adult life to be post-college). When I look back at everything that has happened over the past couple of decades, I can’t help but get excited for what’s yet to come. Our oldest daughter, Ashley, is scheduled to get her M.B.A. in May. Starting the ‘20s off with a major accomplishment, the coming years will certainly be exciting for her as she enters the first decade of her adult life. Our son, Peyton, and youngest daughter, Audrey, are in the middle of their high school years. They will experience high school graduation and their college years during the ‘20s – and then some. My wife and I will each hit a major age milestone during the ‘20s – yikes! And it appears, as long as things go as planned, that we are likely to become empty nesters later in the decade. How crazy is that? I hope that the ‘20s will deliver the same type of hectic joy that the last decade has brought. Although I would love for things to simply slow down, I can’t Derrick Breaux help but imagine how we will all look back at the ‘20s once Publisher they have come and gone. And since a new year and decade would not be as fun without resolutions, rest assured that I have a few that I’m working on. You’ll have to stay tuned for the updates. Happy new year (decade) from the Breaux family to yours!

Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

ALYZE DREILING IS A CONDUCTING FORCE FOR LOCAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA by LINDA FRABL | photo by Forever Photography by Liberty

G

Name: Profession: Community: Favorite Local Spots:

Alyze Dreiling Conductor, Violinist, Violist Rancho Bernardo – Westwood since 1994 Barons Market, Sprouts Farmers Market, Bernardo Winery, all local restaurants

rowing up in an arts-infused household in Michigan with a father who was a pianist/organist and a mother who was a pianist/singer/oil-painter, it was inevitable that Alyze Dreiling would grow up to become enmeshed in the world of musical arts herself. Alyze, who began playing the violin at age 12, admitted, “Ever since I was little it was impossible for me to consider being anything other than a musician, especially a violinist. Music was always everywhere in the house!” Now a resident of the Westwood community, Alyze is a wellknown presence in San Diego’s musical performance and education circuit. Alyze is the founder, artistic director, and conductor of the Soloists Ensemble, Sinfonietta, and Festival Orchestra, all part of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. She is also the conductor of North Coast Strings at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, and the principal viola in the Grossmont Symphony and String Quintet. Alyze is also the music coach of the violin and viola sections at numerous schools: RBHS, Westview HS, Del Norte HS, Oak Valley MS, Challenger MS, and intermittently at Mira Mesa High School and Mission Bay High School. Plus, Alyze has her own private teaching clientele of about 50 students. Alyze commented, “It is very fulfilling to me, as a conductor, to lead and inspire these young musicians who are on their path in musical development.” Recently, Alyze was awarded the 2019 First Prize for Conductor of Youth Orchestra division from the American Prize, a national competition. She was also selected to participate in two International Conducting Competitions in 2018, one in Sofia, Bulgaria, and one in Nice, France. Alyze revealed, “I would like to conduct more here and abroad. My biggest goal would be to develop and perform with a professional chamber women’s orchestra here in San Diego, featuring a great deal of music by female composers.” A fan of Rancho Bernardo, Alyze served on the city’s Planning Board and Community Council, and volunteered as Entertainment Coordinator for the RB Alive Event for numerous years. Alyze proclaimed, “I want to be involved with serving the community and getting to know the people. I like to give back as much as I can!” 

Sharing the Holiday Spirit

THE RB COMMUNITY GIVES BACK AT ANNUAL SNOW DAY

T

he Rancho Bernardo Community Council’s (RBCC) annual Snow Day in the Park and Hot Cocoa With Santa was once again a success. Participants enjoyed a day of wintery fun while giving back to the community. The RBCC provided 20 gallons of hot cocoa and 500 cookies to fuel the merrymaking, which included games, crafts, face painting, and photos with Santa. The Recreation Advisory Board provided a hillside of snow for sledding, snow angels, and snowballs.

Guests also brought new, unwrapped gifts for children staying at the Polinsky Children’s Center, which offers emergency shelter to children separated from their families. The center admits more than 300 children 18 years or younger every month. From toys and books to games and sports equipment, community members donated more than $6,500 of holiday gifts for these children in need. ACHIEVING BALANCE Brain Balance Addresses Challenges with a Drug-Free, Integrative Approach by LIZ ONUFER | photos provided by Brain Balance of San Diego

J

on Pak knew there was a more effective way to help children who struggle academically, socially, or behaviorally – namely, through a coordinated, child-centric effort. As the father of a son with Down Syndrome, an uncle to a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, and a friend to parents with struggling children, Jon paired his personal experience with his passion for helping people and his entrepreneurial roots to open the doors of Brain Balance of San Diego. Brain Balance serves struggling children with an integrative and holistic approach. “We’re bringing a much needed nonmedical solution to a widespread problem affecting families of all walks of life,” Jon said. Through a personalized combination of in-center sessions, at-home activities, and a nutrition program, Brain Balance addresses the individual gaps for each child to improve focus, behavior, social skills, sensory processing, and academics. “The team cares deeply about our students and, as each child is different, we discuss strategies for each one of them to create the biggest impact possible,” Jon acknowledged. Backed by a program developed and continuously improved by research that has been proven successful on over 30,000 children, the Brain Balance team creates individualized

plans to strengthen the child’s weaker areas, including sensory engagement, core muscle strength and coordination, eye tracking, auditory processing, academic guidance, and nutritional guidance. “Gaps and holes in development result in gaps and holes in behavior, academics, socialization, and confidence,” Jon explained. “Our program focuses on improving the foundation of development and brain connectivity rather than masking or coping with symptoms.” Those symptoms can range from lack of focus and meltdowns to lack of confidence and social struggles. Jon and his team work mainly with children from Pre-K to 12th grade with or without a diagnosis and also offer a new program for college-age students. “I’d like to encourage parents to challenge the system,” Jon shared. “A label doesn’t necessarily help the child and medication is only a coping strategy that in the long run doesn’t provide any improvement while oftentimes affects the development of the child.” Since opening their doors earlier this year, Jon and his team are experiencing the results. “Whenever our parents share their stories on how things are better at school, at home, making new friends, doing things they would have never imagined in the past, we get so pumped up that it makes us want to work

Golf Tournament Supports Veterans photo by Erik Eilers

Local business ICON Utility Services and their sister company, GIS Surveyors, Inc., recently hosted the 1st Annual Warrior Built Golf Tournament. Both companies are service-disabled veteran owned, and the tournament benefited The Warrior Built Foundation, which provides vocational and recreational opportunities to combat veterans and wounded service members. Events and activities from building motorcycles to playing softball help veterans transition to civilian life with support and camaraderie. “It’s about creating relationships between fellow combat veterans,” explained Warrior Built Founder and President Nick Hamm. “The best thing we can do for you is connect you with other combat vets in order to strengthen your support network.” The tournament was held at Riverwalk Golf Club and welcomed 136 golfers. Eight vendors and 47 sponsors took part for a day of golf, craft brews, fine dining, and more, and $38,324 was raised for the foundation. Learn more at www.warriorbuiltgolftournament.com.

Adoptable dogs were available at the kick-off event, and donated items throughout the week-long drive included dog and cat food, collars, blankets, cat litter, flea and tick medicine, and leashes. This year’s donations benefited nonprofit organizations Lionel’s Legacy and Second Chance Dog Rescue. Lionel’s Legacy is a senior dog rescue and humane education program for elementary school children. Second Chance is an organization dedicated to saving homeless dogs from local shelters and from Baja California, Mexico. Learn more at www.lionelslegacy.org and www.secondchancedogrescue.org. Assemblymember Maienschein represents the 77th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Scripps Ranch, Poway, Rancho Peñasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Mira Mesa, Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Miramar, San Pasqual Valley, and Tierrasanta.

RB Community Foundation Grants The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation (RBCF) awarded $96,050 in grants to 20 local nonprofit organizations at the annual RBCF Community Thanksgiving Luncheon. The combined total is a historic high for the organization, made possible in part by a donation in memory of Rancho Bernardo residents June and Maurice Nestrud. The 2019-2020 grantees were: Let’s Light the Cross Foundation, Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation, Voices for Children, Rancho Bernardo High School, Spirit of the Fourth, Inc., Rancho Bernardo Historical Society, Rancho Bernardo Veterans Memorial, Rancho Bernardo Senior Services, Alzheimer’s San Diego, Friends of Vista Hill, Southern California Ballet, Rancho Bernardo Music Boosters, Classics 4 Kids, Golden Era Memories and Film, YMCA of San Diego County, Poway Symphony Orchestra Foundation, Turtleback Education Foundation, Burn Institute, Friends of the Rancho Bernardo Library, and Rancho Bernardo Neighborhood Watch. Learn more about the foundation at www.sdfoundation.org.

Music at the RB Library The Friends of the Rancho Bernardo Library are starting the year with more exciting musical events at the library. The first Discovery Concert of the year will be Spirit of India on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 3 p.m. Ahaana will present a compilation of classical and folk dances from India, exploring the history and current practice of the art forms. Later in January, jazz ensemble Blurring the Edges will take the stage. The quartet is composed of local musicians Peter Sprague, Fred Benedetti, Tripp Sprague, and Mark Leighton, performing jazz influenced by flamenco, Celtic, samba, Latin, and Indian music. The jazz concert will be on Jan. 22 from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Learn more about upcoming events at www.friendsoftherblibrary.org.

Volunteers Needed for Habitat Restoration Project Community members ages 13 and up have the opportunity to help Nature Collective biologists restore the native habitat at Harbaugh Seaside Trails in January by installing native plant seedlings. “We invite everyone to get outside and enjoy the coastal breezes as we all join together to make Harbaugh Seaside Trails an incredible place,” said Doug Gibson, Nature Collective Executive Director. “Years from now, you will get to see how this land is thriving and personally feel a part of its natural legacy.” Volunteer planting events will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on January 11, 18, and 25. Each event is limited to 50 participants. Harbaugh Seaside Trails – the three-acre coastal overlook linking Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Solana Beach – is nearly complete after a year of restoration efforts. The space will be officially unveiled in February. Sign up to help at www.thenaturecollective.org/events.

lite Pediatric Dentistry was the first pediatric dental practice in 4S Ranch and has been providing dental care to children in the community for over seven years now. Under the care of Dr. Femme Ambrosio and her team, the practice strives to provide extraordinary care for every patient, every day. “The practice has grown considerably since I first started,” said Dr. Ambrosio. “Our team is committed to

improving, maintaining, and growing ourselves for the benefit of the children we see.” According to Dr. Ambrosio, a boardcertified pediatric dentist, having a boutique practice allows her the time necessary to ensure that children and parents have a positive experience and the best possible care. Dr. Ambrosio is a native San Diegan, wife, and mother, all of which she feels serve her well in her practice. Dr. Ambrosio is a mother to Bennett (9), Amelie (8), and Camdyn (6). “It has always been a goal of mine to not only support the oral health of our patients, but to also be a part of the community our children grow up in,” explained Dr. Ambrosio. “We play active roles in the surrounding schools, sponsoring events that help provide greater opportunities for students.” The staff at Elite Pediatric Dentistry looks forward to being a part of the community, your family, and watching your child grow. 

ORTHODONTICS PROFILE

Community Driven DR. LINDSAY PFEFFER TAKES I-ORTHO TO NEW HEIGHTS OF PATIENT FOCUS AND PHILANTHROPY

by KELLEY GUSICH | photos provided by iOrthodontics

D

r. Lindsay Pfeffer, MBE, MS, is the owner of i-Orthodontics in Del Sur. She and the entire clinic take pride in a patient-driven approach, where patients get to choose what they want, how they want it, and i-Ortho caters to their desires. Providing braces, Invisalign, Phase 1 (treatment to prevent extraction, surgery, or more invasive treatments when patients are older), and Phase 2 (non-extraction techniques), they focus on the face and airway, and can change a child’s trajectory just through an upfront approach – laying out all the possibilities. “We want you to feel like family and be informed. Our job is to teach you what you need to know so that you can understand your options and feel confident in your decisions,” said Dr. Pfeffer. The exceptionalism of i-Ortho can be easily attributed to Dr. Pfeffer’s unique story. Her biology degree took her from scientific research for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to oncology fighting numerous types of cancer. When her father, a well-known dentist in her home town, died, Dr. Pfeffer began helping the dental practice. “It was here,” she said, “seeing patients crying over their love for my father, I decided I wanted to be a dentist.” She attended Penn School of Dental Medicine – an Ivy League institution – while also completing a Master’s in Biomedical Ethics at medical school. “We focus on community and that means giving back to our patients, our schools, and those in need,” shared Dr. Pfeffer. “We’re not just a doctor’s office; we are changing lives outside of our clinic walls every day.” Her commitment to her patients’ overall health is reflected in i-Ortho’s involvement with the area. They provide resources to 22 schools as well as multiple organizations, including the San Dieguito, Greater San Diego, and 4S Ranch Boys and Girls Clubs. Her office not only donates their time to over 150 organizations in her community, but also financially, last year donating over $110,000 throughout the county – an unprecedented number for a healthcare office, let alone a small business and sole practitioner. Dr. Pfeffer is also faculty at University of California, San Diego Medical School, where she operates the free clinic providing care for the less fortunate. i-Ortho is a business built on honesty, trust, and love for the patients, the community, and those who need it most. Dr. Pfeffer concluded, “We are creating smiles from the inside out. My job is to give people the smile they deserve and then give that same love, understanding, and attention to those who need it most and otherwise wouldn’t get it. If not us, who will?”  26 • 92128MAGAZINE.COM • January | February 2020

STUDIO WEST

E

mbarking on a new career can be a daunting task, especially when it involves diving into a high-energy, high-profile one such as audio engineering. But switching up careers later in life is something that seemed like a “no-brainer” to several audio enthusiasts after taking part in the Electronic Production Package (EPP) at Studio West. Like their fellow classmates, these students initially enrolled in the EPP program as a fun way to expand their skills in what seemed like an after-work hobby. However, once involved in the program, what started as a hobby soon began looking more like a viable career option. “Oftentimes we see some of the more casual enthusiasts enter the program with the idea that this is for fun or good for a side business. But once they start working with our instructors, getting hands-on engineering experience in a working recording studio, we see a shift in focus. Folks with a regular 9-to5 job they aren’t 100% invested in realize that their passion can be turned into a viable

career,” explained Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admissions for The Recording Arts Center (TRAC) at Studio West. Todd explained further, “When the class is over, the next logical step to launch a career in the industry is to acquire more experience and get the in-depth training that can lead to a successful career in audio engineering. Many find this in our year-long Diploma program.” One student, Isaiah, finished the EPP program last month and immediately enrolled in the Diploma Program. His classes began on Monday, and he couldn’t be more thrilled about his choice. “It was so much fun working a real recording studio. I’m really excited about my decision to start the full program!” Don’t miss out on a new career opportunity in audio engineering – try out The Recording Art Center’s Electronic Production Package now. Classes are enrolling now, so check out the full schedule at www.studiowest.com or call 858-592-9497.
