Call Me “Breaux”

A
little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 13 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey. Be sure to check out their next performance at the House of Blues in San Diego on March 31. A limited number of discounted tickets are available. Email hello@callmebreaux.com for more information.

ORAL SURGERY PROFILE
Putting Patient Care First Boulder Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Offers Patients Optimal Results in a Caring Environment by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos provided by Boulder OMS
A
t Boulder OMS, patient comfort and care are at the core of the practice. “Dr. Albert Lin and Dr. Robert Gramins take the time to understand each patient’s needs and offer services that deliver optimal results. We treat each patient in a relaxed and caring environment and utilize the latest techniques and treatment options,” explained Kelly Zielinski, marketing and public relations manager for Boulder OMS. Originally founded in 1972, Boulder OMS is the oldest and most established oral and facial surgery practice in the greater Poway area. With a track record of exceptional results and the goal of being the most trusted and respected oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in San Diego, Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are committed to providing the highest standards of care. Boulder OMS treats a wide range of patients, from preteens to older adults and everyone in between. The practice specializes in wisdom tooth extraction, dental implants, facial trauma, oral pathology, corrective jaw surgery, Botox and fillers, and dental alveolar surgery. “Our doctors spent an additional four years in school for their oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. This makes them uniquely qualified to perform surgery on the face and in the mouth,” stated Zielinski. Both Dr. Lin and
Dr. Gramins are Fellows of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and are board certified as Diplomates by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. They are also among a select group of oral and maxillofacial surgeons that are licensed to perform facial cosmetic surgery in the state of California. Boulder OMS is an accredited surgery center and adheres to strict guidelines for safety and patient care as set forth by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins voluntarily had the practice accredited by the AAAHC, a process which includes thorough onsite reviews of policies and practices by expert surveyors every two years. According to Zielinski, this is the highest level of certification and ensures that Boulder OMS is at the forefront of technology, safety, and patient care. Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are also dedicated to giving back to the community. They are the oral and facial surgeons to the San Diego Gulls and actively volunteer their skills and expertise to the Oral Cancer Foundation, Las Patronas, The Ronald McDonald House, and other local charities. A Bright Future Lies Ahead of Yasmin Khajenoori by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Spark Photography
ixteen-year-old Yasmin Khajenoori is a remarkable student. As a junior, she has received an AP Scholar Award in recognition of her academic achievements and has been named a Nighthawk Scholar for attaining a grade point average of 4.0 or higher. By the end of the school year, Yasmin will have taken a total of eight AP classes. But what people may not know about this superstar student is that she isn’t only accomplishing great things in her studies; she is accomplishing great things in the community as well. Yasmin lives in Carmel Mountain Ranch with her parents, Joe and Roya. “I love living here because it is so diverse and beautiful,” shared Yasmin. “It’s amazing to be surrounded by so many people of different cultures and backgrounds.” She currently attends Del Norte High School. “I love many aspects of my school, but specifically the inclusivity and kindness,” stated Yasmin. “I am a part of a program at our school called Link Crew, which emphasizes helping freshman and new students acclimate to the school. Additionally, our school has almost 100 clubs, creating an environment where every student can find a place where they belong.” Speaking of clubs, Yasmin is currently the president of her school’s Spanish Club. “I always had a love for the Spanish language and culture, since I’d been learning the
language since preschool,” explained Yasmin. “After taking AP Spanish last year I decided to start the Spanish Club at my school to help shed light on Hispanic culture on campus. This year, we have held cultural celebrations for Día de los Muertos and Hispanic Heritage Month at our school.” She is also part of Del Norte’s speech and debate team. “I am the parliamentary captain and help coach about 30 of my peers every week on essential debate skills,” Yasmin noted. “I have participated on the debate team for three years. I love debate because it helps teach you how to be confident in public speaking.” In an effort to spread her passion of speech and debate, Yasmin volunteers her time every week at a local elementary or middle school. At her own school, Yasmin volunteers weekly in the Writing Help and Tutoring Center. And her effort to give back doesn’t stop there; Yasmin volunteers four hours each week at Scripps Memorial Hospital. “I have accumulated over 120 hours volunteering at the hospital,” explained Yasmin. She also coordinates and volunteers at a variety of events around the community through her school’s Key Club, gaining over 60 hours since April. “Past events include food packaging at the food bank, decorating the Ronald McDonald House for Christmas, and helping at local elementary school events,” she said. “Additionally, this past holiday season I hosted
a toy drive at my school and collected toys for Rady Children’s Hospital.” With all of her volunteer efforts, Yasmin has been recognized as Officer of the Month in her Key Club division, which is comprised of seven schools. She has also been the recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for acquiring over 200 hours of service this past year. “I love spending my time volunteering and giving back to the community that helped shape me into who I am,” shared Yasmin. Inspired by the likes of Maria Montessori and Elizabeth Blackwell – who Yasmin described as both being “strong, independentminded women who defied the clutches of society to help better the world” – Yasmin dreams of attending a prestigious university and pursuing a career in medicine. “These women inspire me to break through the obstacles I face in order to reach my goals and spread my passions,” said Yasmin. ¢

For the past several years, food trucks seem to have taken over the culinary scene in cities around the world. This modern dining option offers quick, gourmet food – anytime, anywhere. Mobile cuisine encompasses everything from burgers, hot dogs, tacos, and barbecue to grilled cheese sandwiches, bacon, macaroni and cheese, vegan food, and international fusions – each with their own unique twist. SCHOOL PROFILE
A Love of Learning Grows Here Peaceful, Spacious Environment at Country Montessori School photos provided by Country Montessori School
C
ountry Montessori School (CMS) is committed to maintaining its leadership in Montessori education. Their mission is to foster independent, confident, academically prepared, and socially responsible citizens who will be lifelong learners and problem-solvers. CMS grows and evolves to meet the needs of children, parents, and community. As part of preparing students to be socially responsible citizens, CMS encompasses various community outreach events. Fifth-level students visit the Sunshine Care Community every month. They take Montessori materials for interactive activities with the residents. CMS has also adopted a beach in Solana Beach for periodic clean ups after which families get together for a potluck. Last year, the students raised over $2,000 for the World Wildlife Fund. The fifth levels researched philanthropic organizations and made presentations to the school community, who then voted on which one to support. Each classroom studied an endangered animal. The fundraiser was called “change for change.” The classroom that collected the most change had the stuffed panda live in their classroom for the next two weeks. CMS also takes part in food drives, and this year, some students will be helping at local food banks. It is important to the board of directors and staff that students have the opportunity to be involved in activities beyond the classroom. an authentic Montessori education in a peaceful, spacious environment. At CMS, children ages 2.5 to 11 transition from concrete activities to advanced abstract thinking. Highly respected in North San Diego for over 25 years and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, CMS is a full member of the American Montessori Society. “The key Montessori philosophy is fostering the children’s enthusiasm for learning,” said Adela Corrales, Head of School. The school provides additional instruction in music, Spanish, art, physical education, and technology. Montessori learning materials invite discovery and grow with the child, containing multiple levels of challenge. “We are a collaborative community where older students serve as role models for our younger students,” said Adela. “Students are a part of a community, not just a school. We believe in educating the whole child: intellectual, physical, emotional, and social.” Small class sizes and a team-teaching approach help students feel comfortable and engaged. Elementary classes have just 10 students per teacher and early childhood classes have 12 students per teacher. Each classroom is led by two to four AMS-credentialed teachers, so students can draw from the strengths of multiple teachers. For parents looking for the best learning environment for their child, a personal tour of the school is highly recommended. Adela said, “Call us for a tour and we will personally show you around the campus, introduce you to staff, and answer any questions you might have about our curriculum and our students’ success.” ¢

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER
Helping Our Kids Volunteer Karen Brainard Helps Local Kids Gain Self-Confidence by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Alan Smith Photography
K
aren Brainard moved to the Seven Oaks community of Rancho Bernardo 13 years ago. She loves the small-town feeling she finds there, with friendly people, great residents, and many opportunities to volunteer – all important elements for Karen in retirement, after more than 20 years working in prisons. “I love to cook and the neighborhood looks forward to my homemade cookies and candies at holiday times,” she shared. About three months after moving to RB, she received a call about Seniors Helping Our Kids (SHOK), a volunteer organization whereby retirees tutor students in first through third grade who need reading help, and has been volunteering ever since. As the lead volunteer at Los Peñasquitos Elementary School, Karen begins her school year in early September, contacting teachers to see if they have children who would benefit from tutoring, and then following up with volunteers, checking for preferences as far as number of children, dates, and times the volunteers wish to work. “After I hear from teachers and tutors, the work begins assigning students and tutors to accommodate the needs of both groups,” Karen explained. “We only tutor in reading to the children and they must be fluent in English. Currently we are working with seven teachers in grades one through three and, including myself, we have a team of 17 volunteers tutoring 31 students.” Helping children who need reading support can be difficult, especially with readers who struggle. The most challenging part for Karen occurs when a child is not motivated and may not be getting the support needed at home. The role of a SHOK volunteer is extremely important to give that child the adult role model he or she needs. On the other hand, “The most rewarding part of this work is watching a young child improve in his or her reading skills and self-confidence as the year progresses,” Karen smiled. There are SHOK volunteers in 22 elementary schools in the Poway Unified School District; Karen would love to someday have volunteers in all PUSD schools. “An interested community member can contact our coordinator, Jane Radatz. You will be trained and given supplies and tools to help you work with the children,” she shared. “My wish would be that every child who needs our help gets it.” ¢

T
hree standout local community members will be inducted into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame this month. The March 10 ceremony is a chance to recognize the years of service each inductee has devoted to the Rancho Bernardo community. Eldon Jennings was selected for his over30 years of service as Boy Scout Troop 681 Scoutmaster. Over his tenure, he guided nearly 90 Boy Scouts through their Eagle Scout projects – as well as countless other service projects benefiting the community. Eldon also led the troop to take on the Westwood Men’s Club’s luminaria celebration, which Troop 681 has carried out since 1986. The nondenominational tradition lines Westwood’s streets with candles in paper bags for the community to enjoy. Inductee Karen Stelman is being honored for her work with Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club, where she served as president from 1995 to 1996. She has been instrumental to the club’s success over the years, including her work to establish the Healing Field in Rancho Bernardo Community
Park. The Healing Field was created to mark the first anniversary of the October 2007 Witch Creek Fire, with 1,100 American flags representing damaged or destroyed homes. The third new Hall of Famer, Mike Farrell, is being recognized for his dedication to the Los Rancheros Kiwanis Club, which he joined upon his arrival in Rancho Bernardo 34 years ago. He served as president from 1988 to 1989 and has spent several terms on the board of directors. Mike’s service extends beyond Kiwanis as well. He was a founding member of the Friends of the 4S Ranch Library, and he served as the organization’s president for five years. He spent three years on the Ed Brown Center’s board of directors and has volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 681 for over 30 years. The Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame was established in 1974 and is currently led by President Valerie Brown, Treasurer and Past President Robin Kaufman, Vice President Vicki Touchstone, and Secretary Jane Radatz. A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // VINCE WALLACE I grew up in Rancho Penasquitos and found a passion for soccer while playing for “PQ Express”. I then went on to play at Palomar Junior College, San Diego State University, and a handful of men’s Premier teams. One of those teams included the San Diego Surf where I had the pleasure of being teammates with some of my current coaching associates at SD Force FC – Jose Ocampo, Paul Curry, and Kino Valdez. I am fortunate to coach for the SD Force FC because the club understands that winning does not create development, but development creates winners. Winning at all costs stunts the growth of children’s learning and puts unnecessary pressure that inhibits the ability to perform at a high level. Parents should surround their kids with positive coaches who prioritize the enjoyment of the game and how it should be played as opposed to the result. That is how you raise a happy and high performing athlete.

Student Wellness at RB High
H
igh school can be a difficult time for students; they may undergo changes in perception, career trajectory, and personality, all while managing their academic and extracurricular lives. All these changes and responsibilities can impose a great deal of stress. Fortunately, Rancho Bernardo High School offers many opportunities for students to achieve mental wellness. The most well-known form of spreading wellness at RB High is through school-wide events. No Place for Hate Week, for instance, is an annual event in which students participate in various activities throughout the week, all of which focus on universal acceptance, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or any other differences. Another powerful event which specifically targets sophomores, Human Relations Conference (HRC), aims to help students feel less isolated and discover the importance of showing empathy. Every year, a different speaker leads the students through the conference, which is centered around the theme “Breaking Down the Walls.” “A big thing about being a teenager is that you feel alone a lot
of the time, whether it be socially, academically, or just in life,” senior and HRC Commissioner Zoey Roberts said. “[HRC] is important to have because it lets kids know that it’s okay to not be okay.” While these events garner the most attention, many other resources are also available on campus, particularly staff members. From teachers to individual counselors to the school’s psychologist, students have many sets of ears ready to listen and help them through anything that may be impeding their success at school. Additionally, the school’s programs office often holds group sessions for students that have gone through similar, potentially traumatic, experiences. Despite the challenges that students face throughout high school, they can feel comfort in knowing that when they need help, they do not have to look far. ¢

Student Athlete Back in Action MADDIE ENGBLOM READY TO RETURN TO SPORTS AFTER LONG RECOVERY
M
addie Engblom, an eighth grader at Bernardo Height Middle School, has been active in her school, community, and on the field. As ASB president, Girl Scout, volunteer with Best Buddies and local nonprofits, and goalkeeper for 04 SD Force soccer team in 4S Ranch, among several other activities, Maddie has kept busy excelling in every aspect. But almost a year ago, 13-year-old Maddie broke bones in her right leg while trying out for an Olympic development soccer team. After surgery to insert metal rods into her leg, Maddie was in a cast for five months and was required to wear an elctromagnetic bone stimulator, and did physical therapy. Despite these painful, physical struggles and a slow recovery, Maddie maintained a positive and determined attitude to get back to being the active athlete she was before her accident. “I am most excited to get back to soccer because I can’t wait to be back on the the field playing with my team. I love the feeling of making a great save that helps my team win. I have a passion for playing soccer and I have really missed being on the field,” shared Maddie. She has been training with her team and recently got back on the field to play again and gain back all the sports and activities she missed out on for 10 months. “My biggest life goal is that I would like to win an Olympic gold medal,” expressed Maddie. ¢

Pomerado Elementary Garden Donation The Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC) recently gave a donation to the Pomerado Elementary School Garden Club. The garden, which is a true grassroots project spearheaded by a school parent, provides a natural green space for students to learn and play. Students can taste the food grown there and learn simple recipes that can be made with the produce. The garden coordinator shared, “The grand plan for this garden is to be able to someday give back to families in need within the Pomerado Elementary School community.” The funds were raised at RBCC’s 1st Annual Earth Day event, which was held in April of last year. The event had a very successful first year, with approximately 300 attendees, 27 vendors, raffles, and a kids’ craft center. Bench Project Serves Hundreds in Mexico Local nonprofit Sustainable Surplus was recently tasked with finding a new home for 150 used bus stop benches from the City of San Diego. The benches, which were headed to Miramar Landfill, are made of difficult-to-recycle and non-decomposing fiberglass material. When no use was found for the benches in San Diego, Sustainable Surplus CEO Sue Prelozni reached out to Adolfo Delgado, Binational Coalition of Nonprofits (BCN) partner and executive director of the Comité Binacional Unidos por la Niñez (CBUN) in Mexico. With Adolfo’s help, the benches were refurbished, repurposed, and distributed to several cities throughout Mexico, where they will be used in parks, churches, schools, and community centers. BCN was founded in 2017 to facilitate the handling of donated items that cannot be reused or repurposed locally, resulting in at least 12 crossborder donations in the past year. Rob Schupp, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Metropolitan Transit System, said, “This is a great example of agencies coming together to find solutions that are good for the planet.” For more information visit www.sustainablesurplus.org.

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS
N
ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day-camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, traditional camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. Inspired Movement offers specialized week-long summer camp experiences for ages 3 to 5, 5 to 8, and 8 to 12. Each age group can choose from programs that focus on musical theater, hip hop, ballet, jazz, acro, lyrical, and more. Camps are centered on fun! Intensives are also offered for more advanced dancers ages 8 and up. Inspired Movement prides themselves in bringing in the best dance instruction from outside San Diego and is becoming very well-known for offering amazing monthly master classes and summer guest teachers. Mathnasium’s initial assessment helps its talented team develop an individualized learning plan for each student, and later, a progress report to document growth and achievement by the end of summer. R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H
Confusion Slowing the Local Market by SCOTT VOAK
W
hile San Diego as a whole is experiencing a slight slowdown in real estate activity (a reduction of 4.5% in sales year-over-year), the North County inland market (Poway Unified School District, Scripps Ranch, and Mira Mesa) is seeing a much more pronounced lull in the market to start 2018 (a 14.1% reduction). I believe there are three main reasons for this, and all of them revolve around future uncertainty. The first two affect the upper end market throughout the county. Those factors are the new tax law and recent volatility in the stock market and interest rates. We know the new tax law is going to hurt California homeowners, but until people meet with their accountants to prepare 2017 taxes, they probably won’t have a firm idea of how much it will impact them. This type of uncertainty causes people to become conservative and put off major purchases like housing. Hopefully, once people know what the increase will be next year, they will be more comfortable making a move in the housing market. You can count on the fact that the stock market is going to be more volatile and interest rates are generally going to move up. While that is not helpful, the one thing you can do if you are considering a home purchase is get your down payment out of the stock market. There’s nothing worse than finding your dream home on Sunday and watching
your down payment disappear on Monday if the market falls. The third area of uncertainty affects us more in PUSD. That is the uncertainty surrounding the attempted takeover of Qualcomm by Broadcom. Poway School District is a magnet for engineers who want their kids to get a good education. Two years ago, when there was an announced layoff at Qualcomm, the local housing market really slowed down until layoff notices went out, and as soon as people knew they still had jobs, the market took off. I have talked to several of my Qualcomm clients and they are indeed sitting on the sidelines until the situation is resolved. Given that uncertainty over taxes will likely last into April and the Qualcomm situation may take another 30 to 60 days to resolve itself (as of this writing), I anticipate a slower market through March and then a very strong May through July. ¢
