Horsing Around

’m from Southeast Texas, so I’ve been on my fair share of horses growing up. My good friend had a couple of horses that we would saddle up and ride to the levee. And no, I’m not making this stuff up – there really was a levee about a mile from my childhood home. I’m pretty sure that people have written songs about this. When I met my wife about 20 years ago, I learned that she grew up with horses. Over the years, she shared many stories of riding on the endless trails in Poway – many of which have long been taken over by developments and homes. The time that she spent with her horses growing up made a lasting impression that she holds close to her heart. Our youngest daughter, Audrey, started taking riding lessons a couple of years ago. Although she has traditionally split her extracurricular hours between soccer, softball, and music, we noticed that she quickly developed a strong passion for horseback riding. Last year Audrey approached us with the idea of adopting or rescuing a horse. At first, we thought the idea was absurd. But this didn’t deter her. While she could have accepted our decision and moved on, instead, she began developing a plan and documenting everything that needed to take place in order to accomplish her goal. She presented her plan to us – which included her own financial and time commitments. And as you may have guessed by reading this and seeing the photo, Audrey did find a horse that needed a new home. In fact, she actually found two horses (eight-year-old brothers from different mothers). Thankfully the horses had not been abused, but they had been neglected. Unfortunately, they were left in their stalls at a facility in Los Angeles with very little socializing and human attention for the past year and a half. Little did these two horses know, they were about to get the full attention of a very determined and dedicated 13-year-old girl. Over the past couple of months, we have watched these horses transform from nervous and shy creatures to warm and loving family members. I have observed a beautiful bond develop between my daughter and these giant animals that is very difficult to describe. Although I was skeptical at first, what started out to be a project for my daughter and wife has turned into a family affair. It has been refreshing to take an hour here and an hour there to join them at the stables. Time seems to slow down while we are there. Technology is optional at best. It is very tranquil and therapeutic. But most importantly, I get to watch and be involved while memories are made that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

eed Ganzer is a 12-year-old seventh grader who lives in Sabre Springs and attends Meadowbrook Middle School. An aficionado of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) programs, Reed has found success with his forays into his school’s robotic teams. He began as a sixth grader by joining up with a FIRST Lego League (FLL) team, building and programming Lego robots with EV3 block programming. Now he is onto bigger and better robotic tasks, thanks to his involvement with the FIRST Tech Challenge team. Reed elaborated, “The FIRST Tech Challenge team is for grades 7 through 12. My team, the Cerulean Centaurs, designs, builds, programs, and operates a robot to compete in an alliance against other robots. We use Java-based programming, gamepad controllers, and cell phones to control the robot. We get to design and build parts out of metal or with 3D printers.” The Cerulean Centaurs recently won the Collins Aerospace Innovative Award, an honor bestowed to the team with the most innovative and creative robot design solutions. Reed commented, “The most rewarding part about robotics is when you are on the competition field and you get to see the robot working how it should. The most challenging part is that sometimes

things don’t go as expected, but there is always something to learn.” In addition to robotics, Reed also does taekwondo, enjoys drawing, and plays the baritone and the euphonium. His favorite subject at school is computer graphic arts, and Reed stated, “It provides a chance to learn and use technology combined with art, which are two things I like.” In the future Reed would like to one day become a mechanical engineer. Always eager to promote robotics programs, Reed jumps in whenever he can to extol the virtues of FIRST team activities. “I make sure to volunteer and share my positive robotics experiences with parents and students whenever a robotics information meeting is held at a school,” he said. “I have also partnered with members from the Poway High Spyder robotics team to help mentor the younger FLL teams. I’ve logged over 58 hours of volunteering at community events and mentoring teams since last year, and I’m just getting started!” 

ince its founding in 1998, Diamond Gateway Women’s Organization (DGWO) has provided a warm welcome and close-knit community for women in Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Poway, and Scripps Ranch. “To be part of an organization that is collectively kind and fun while giving so much back to their community is really cool and inspiring,” shared Nora Nido, DGWO President. Nora joined the organization in 2015 after being invited to a meeting by a client. “Everyone was so nice, and I enjoyed it so much I kept going!” Originally formed as a continuation of Welcome Wagon when the older group disbanded, DGWO meets every month in Rancho Peñasquitos for community service, educational speakers, and connecting with friends.

“It has evolved into meetings with a variety of programs such as guest speakers on current events and topics covering everything from health to being a private investigator or hall of fame songwriter,” Nora said. “Others included authors, theater performers, musicians, or dancers.” DGWO members have also formed spinoff groups for games, crafting, gardening, and attending plays or movies. DGWO’s primary fundraiser each year is a spring luncheon, scheduled for Saturday, March 16 at Carmel Mountain Ranch Estate. Proceeds go towards DGWO’s work for Friends and Family Community Connection, Operation America Cares, and Honor Flight. DGWO also supports San Diego Food Bank and America Cares. BetterTogether TRACY SEKHON SETS OUT TO CREATE A STRONG COMMUNITY RESOURCE FOR AUTISM by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Forever Photography by Liberty

amino Bernardo resident Tracy Sekhon knows firsthand the challenges of raising children with autism. As a mother of one daughter and three sons, two of whom have autism, Tracy is setting out to create a community with the support and resources for families in similar situations. “When my sons were diagnosed, I was grateful to have had direction with obtaining the therapies that could help them,” Tracy explained. As a business owner, she had the time and flexibility to ensure her sons received the therapies they needed. “Most, however, do not have the direction, resources, and flexibility that I have had.” Tracy’s idea for the Autism Resource and Treatment Center (ARTC) was born. The mission of the ARTC is to provide a center for people with autism to access the tools they need to live their best lives and for the families and caregivers to have a place for support. ARTC is being built to serve newborns to adults. The services will range from diagnosis and treatment roadmaps to social groups counseling and job/ life skills. Tracy explained the most rewarding part of her work as the founder of ARTC is “that this collaborative care model will improve lives.” Alongside the rewards, Tracy is working through the challenges one by one. “The most challenging part of my role with ARTC is obtaining the support necessary to get the center open,” she said. “There are significant time and financial investments required. I definitely can’t do this alone!” As part of the effort to make the ARTC a reality, their Inaugural Charity Live and Silent Auction for Autism will be held at the Bernardo Winery on June 7. Tracy also shared that the organization is in need of many autism ambassadors for anyone interested in getting involved. “I founded ARTC to bring all of this together, under one roof, to provide collaborative, effective, and efficient care,” Tracy said. “I believe that we can do autism better together.” 

EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT STUDIO WEST IN 2019!

ne of the busiest recording studios south of LA is located here in Rancho Bernardo. Although Studio West has been around since the 1980s, 2018 was one of the best years ever, according to studio owner Peter Dyson. There certainly were some big names in the studio in 2018 – artists like Lauryn Hill, actors such as Oscarwinners Richard Dreyfuss and Alan Arkin, along with world-famous John Cena. But Dyson is equally passionate about the local artists and community groups who work out of the studio. “I regard Studio West as a resource for the local music and creative community,” said Dyson. “This May will be the sixth year we have hosted the RB

Chorale for their scholarship auditions for high school students planning on studying music in college, and we gave tours to almost 500 middle and high school students last year who want to see what goes on in a working studio. Teachers can request a tour by calling or emailing the studio.” In addition, last year Studio West saw two strong trends continue – more video and more electronic music. “Video is so important to the way we consume media nowadays and over the last few years we have really built up our competency for in-studio video shoots,” said Dyson. “We’ve also seen more electronic music production sessions this past year. I love pianos,

guitars, and drums, but the computer is now an instrument too. n January 1999, Poway resident Margaret Briggerman sent her grand piano on loan to the RB Library. This allowed the Friends of the RB Library to inaugurate their Chamber Concert series, which is now in its 21st year. At the January 30, 2019 concert, featuring the Boston-based Neave Piano Trio, Ms. Briggerman turned ownership of the piano over to the Friends of the RB Library. Harvey Levine, Concert Director for the Friends, accepted the piano and presented a Certificate of Appreciation for the gift and the 20year loan. Over this 20-year period, the RB Library has gained a reputation for presenting very high quality small-ensemble performances of classical and jazz programs. The appreciation concert completely filled the 135-seat community room. The 4th Annual Dancing With Our Stars contest puts community leaders on-stage to benefit California Center for the Arts Escondido’s education and outreach programs. This year’s event will be held April 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the center’s Concert Hall. The contestants will take the stage with professional ballroom dancers. “It’s a fun evening of ballroom dancing that showcases standard ballroom and some freestyle ballroom, all for a great cause,” said Tara Shoemaker from Trilogy Ballroom Dance Studio. The American Association of University Women (AAUW) PowayPeñasquitos branch’s first annual Speech Trek contest asked students to write and present five-minute speeches on the topic, “How Can We Eliminate Violence Aimed at Our Schools?” Dominique Ruedaflores, a freshman at Ramona Convent Secondary School, won the $500 first-place prize. She will continue in the competition to represent AAUW Poway-Peñasquitos at the California AAUW Speech Trek semifinals in March. The top three students from the semi-finals will compete at a statewide convention held in San Diego on April 6. Skandhaa Subra won the $250 second-place prize. Skandhaa is a freshman at Mt. Carmel High School. AAUW Poway-Peñasquitos has over 100 members from 4S Ranch, Carmel Valley, Escondido, Poway, Ramona, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, and Scripps Ranch. In addition to the Speech Trek contest, the organization runs an annual Scholarship Fund and a Tech Trek program that sends eighth grade girls to a science camp every year. 2019 Don Diego Scholarships Applications are open for the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation’s 2019 scholarships, offering a total of $66,000 to 28 outstanding students who reside in San Diego County and have participated in the San Diego County Fair or other activities associated with the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Four scholarships of $5,000, $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000 will be offered in each of four categories: 4-H, FFA, Employee, and Exhibitor/Participant. Ten Junior Livestock Auction Scholarships will be offered to students who qualify for the 4-H (now known as the Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation 4-H Scholarship) or FFA Scholarship and who participate in the 2019 Fair’s Junior Livestock Auction. Rancho Arbolitos, the popular private recreational club in Poway, has been providing summer camps for both of these activities for the past 28 years in a friendly, secure setting. The club’s owner, Di Molenaar, proclaimed, “We aim for the kids to have a good time, meet new friends, learn sportsmanship, and improve their swim and tennis skills in a safe environment.” CAMP BASICS The typical camp is Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but there are also day-to-day drop-off options available. Early drop-off and late pick-up is available to accommodate your family’s schedule. The kids are divided by age and ability, so your child will fit in whether they are a beginner tennis player/ swimmer, or an advanced swimmer/tennis player. Camps are from June 17 until Aug. 16, and are tennis-only, swim-only, or a mix of both. Di shared, “Our most popular camp is the full-week swim and tennis camp. The kids play tennis from 9 to 11 a.m. and have a snack break from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Then the kids get ready for the pool and have free play and swim for 30 minutes until they’re organized into groups for their hour-long swim lesson.”

SWIMMING The swimming camps are run by Pacific Swim. Camp coaches are CPR, Lifeguard, and USA Swim Coach-Certified, and have many years of swimming and coaching experience. The Pacific Swim Team has not only won the Junior Olympic Championship, but also placed within the top three teams for the past 15 years. TENNIS Chira Tennis Academy runs the tennis camps. Its director and founder, Catalin Chira, has been a certified tennis professional for the past 20 years. In 2012, Catalin was awarded the USTPA San Diego Coach of the Year, and he is an USPTA certified Elite Professional, PTR-certified, and Etchberry-certified (strength, conditioning, and movement in tennis). Many of his students reached top national rankings and have received full tennis scholarships. HAVING FUN! The summer camps provide solid instruction, but there is always room for fun! he Maranatha Christian Schools Summer Program focuses on the whole child – from academics, athletics, and the arts to teaching students how they can make an impact in their community and world. Class sizes are small and focused, offering the students dedicated time with teachers, staff, and other students. New friends are made and summer memories are created in a loving, safe, clean, and nurturing environment. Morning and afternoon classes are available in math, English, dance, cooking, STEAM, and indoor and outdoor sports. There are also two classes specifically focused on helping students transition into Kindergarten and first grade. There is a three-week commitment for all classes, with two separate sessions (June 24-July 12 and July 15-Aug. 2). Because of families’ busy schedules, MCS now has extended care available for an additional fee. MCS also offers a preschool summer camp program Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This weekly program has four sessions, beginning June 3. New RB High Career Panels

any high schoolers look to the future burdened with uncertainty. With so many career paths to choose from, it can be difficult for students to decide which one they ultimately commit to. To help them gain a deeper understanding of different professions, Rancho Bernardo High School has instituted a career panel program. Holding a panel nearly every month, the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) has already held three since the new school year began. The medical field was the first career path highlighted in September, followed by the military in October, first responders in January, and small business in February. The career panels are open to all grade levels and take place in the Library

Purpose Room on campus before school on Wednesdays. While one may think that having them early in the morning causes an inconvenience for students hoping to attend, school at RB High starts later on Wednesdays, so the panels actually begin when school would start on any other day. At the panels, volunteers, who are often parents of students, tell about their experiences in the profession, and answer any questions students may have. Darlene Dunn is the head of the PTSA, and she hopes that the program assists students in making decisions that will impact their whole lives. “We wanted the students to know that there are lots of different paths to take after

high school,” Dunn said. “And that a lot the choices and decisions that they make now will affect their future and that there are so many different opportunities. What they may be interested in now may be different in the future, but nevertheless, there is a huge horizon of options for students.” For the remainder of the school year, the PTSA is hosting two more career panels. The education and engineering fields will be highlighted on March 13 and April 10, respectively. 
