Happy Mother’s Day

I

have been blessed with great mothers surrounding me throughout my life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day each year, I often reflect on my childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood. I was raised by a very strong and supportive mother, and as a first grandchild, I also spent many of my younger years with my grandmother. Unfortunately, these two wonderful women are no longer with us today, but the memories and life lessons that I received from them are forever held close to my heart. Having lost my mother to a tragic automobile accident back in 2010 and my grandmother to cancer more recently, you would think that Mother’s Day would approach with some apprehension. However, much to my pleasant surprise, I’ve discovered that Mother’s Day has become one of the most meaningful holidays of the year. Even though the day typically starts with a brief moment of sadness – more like a period of reflection – it quickly turns into a very deep and significant day. Not only do I have an opportunity to celebrate the great memories surrounding my mother and grandmother, I also have the privilege of having several more fantastic mothers that still surround me, support me, and make our lives more meaningful. While there are too many wonderful mothers in our friends and family sphere to mention in this letter, I would like to take a moment to recognize a few of them. First on the list, I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Jessica, for being such an awesome mother to our three kids (as well as many of the neighborhood kids). There are quite a few kiddos around the community (some adults in college now) that have grown Derrick Breaux up calling her “Momma” Breaux. We are all lucky to have you do Publisher what you do. Happy Mother’s Day, Jessica! I would also like to take a moment to send a heartfelt thank you to my mother-in-law Trish and mother-in-law Doreen. Not only are you both incredible influences on our family, but you are also wonderful grandmothers to our kids. We are all extremely happy to have you be a major part of our lives. Happy Mother’s Day, Trish and Doreen! And last but not least, I would like to recognize my sister on this Mother’s Day. Not only is she a great sister, she is also a wonderful mother. I find great joy in watching the way she raises her three children, often displaying the incredibly familiar and nurturing parenting that our mother used with the two of us growing up. It warms my heart beyond words. Happy Mother’s Day, Angelique! And happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the world (past and present) that have impacted our lives. May this Mother’s Day be filled with lots of hugs, special memories, love, and laughter – and maybe some tears.

If there’s one thing that North County residents enjoy more than the beach, it’s the various cuisine, beverages, and sweet treats throughout San Diego. Here, we offer a taste of some local flavor.

FA R E & F E S T I V I T Y

Baseball Bites Padres fans have new options for satisfying their mid-game munchies this season, with two San Diego favorites adding ballpark locations. Buona Forchetta offers simply delicious Italian fare from Neapolitan pizza to gelato. Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill will open one stand serving fish tacos and sandwiches and a second stand with an expanded menu of fresh, local seafood.

RB Flavor The 11th Annual Savour RB food fair was a delicious success at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. Hosted by the Rancho Bernardo Business Association, the sips and samples included offerings from Koi Zen Cellars, Sushi Lounge, Urge Gastropub, and plenty of other local favorites.

ON TH E MAP

MAKING HISTORY A tasty new destination recently debuted at the Bernardo Winery. The Kitchen brings fresh Italian food and three generations of family recipes to the historic property. The menu includes pastas and sauces made from scratch, paninis, and ingredients grown right on the winery grounds. The Kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // Dave Currie

“Dave Currie is one of the hardest working coaches in the industry who develops some of the most talented young players in Southern California.”

I came to SD in 1995 and started coaching for Carlsbad Lightning where I was lucky enough to win Nomads Cup with a good U10 boys team. After 1 year there I got recruited by Del mar sharks and had 6 great years coaching both boys and girls teams. The whole club achieved some really good success and was there that i met Jose and Adrian. Our younger program there was very strong and we won a lot of leagues and tournaments. From there I went to SD Surf where I stayed for 13 years coaching on the boys program and had the fortune of coaching some very successful teams. Highlights being winning Nomads, Surf Cups, State Cups, League titles and coming from England getting to take the u15 boys to Manchester United Premier Cup that was played at United's training ground along with Paul and Nico. A great experience made better with the presence of Sir Alex Ferguson watching the games. Two years ago I was lucky again to be asked to coach with Arsenal that has now become SD Force where we will be working on building the club up to compete at higher levels. My philosophy has not changed since the first year coaching, my teams will always try and play the right way. Playing out of the back and getting my teams to play attractive soccer with high energy. The last 2 years have been great and I always look forward to a new season watching the boys develop.

Golfing for a Better Life

TOBY WELLS FOUNDATION GOLF CLASSIC WILL HELP KIDS AND ANIMALS

T

he Toby Wells Foundation will hold its 17th Annual Toby Wells & Craig Castaneda Golf Classic on June 8 at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside. The tournament is the foundation’s primary fundraising tool to fund all of the programs that provide support to hundreds of underprivileged children and neglected animals throughout San Diego County and other parts of Southern California. The Toby Wells Foundation was first established after Adrienne Wells and April West began searching for ways to raise funds and awareness and honor the memory of their brother Toby, who died 18 years ago from medical complications after paralysis from a swimming accident. The tournament began shortly after the foundation’s establishment, when the Wells family purchased a 300-acre ranch called Blue Apple Ranch.

The ranch is populated with several types of rescued animals who are cared for by disenfranchised and disabled children. Toby was known for his love of animals and frequently rescued dogs in animal shelters. Proceeds from the tournament will go to funding a one-day, outdoor afternoon of fun for 250 local foster youth through the nonprofit Voices for Children, field trips for children of military households through the Armed Services YMCA, a workreadiness internship for foster youth at San Pasqual Academy

and at-risk youth from Abraxas High School and Warner Springs High School, a holiday shopping spree for Polinsky Children’s Center and the Armed Services YMCA whereby each child receives a $200 gift card to WalMart, and assisting in caring for Blue Apple Ranch’s rescued animals. For more information about the foundation or to buy tickets to the tournament visit www.tobywells.org. ¢

TALENT IN TRAINING Studio West Offers Music Production Camps for Young Musicians

S

tudio West has been San Diego’s premier recording studio for over 40 years, but recently some new clients have been working there. In 2015, owner Peter Dyson started a series of week-long music production camps for middle and high school students, largely due to his own children’s musical journey. “My daughter plays the harp and my son is a drummer. They both had amazing teachers and great experiences performing with various ensembles, but a recording studio is a different environment that helps musicians grow.” The week-long camps involve instruction in songwriting, production and performance. Many students have a background in music theory and traditional instruments, but it’s not a requirement. “A laptop is now a musical instrument, just like a piano or guitar, but to play it requires the same instruction, discipline, and hard work that’s required for more traditional instruments,” said Dyson.

Performing in a studio is intimidating, but students rise to the occasion. As the lead instructor, San Diego songwriter, performer, and father of two multi-instrumentalist preteen boys Shawn Rohlf explains it, “I’m amazed at the musicianship and work ethic of the kids. If they are this good now, where will they be in 10 years?” At the end of the week, parents and students listen to the songs that students have written and produced over the week. The experience leaves many ready for more. As student Chrysta Hlavacek (17) puts it, “Making music with talented artists is my dream job, and going to Studio West helps me get there.” ¢

Backyard - San Diego County Fair (PU27)

ne of San Diego’s most beloved traditions returns on June 1. The San Diego County Fair – whose theme this year is How Sweet It Is! – was first established in 1880 and arrived at its current home, the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in 1936. The fair has undergone a number of name changes over the past 138 years, and though the name was changed back to the original San Diego County Fair in 2002, many locals still know it as the Del Mar Fair. The fair offers a wide range of attractions and events, from famously adventurous fair food to dizzying carnival rides. Community members of all ages have the opportunity to showcase their talents as well, with competitions and exhibitions for collections, crafts, wine and beer, fine art, fashion, floral design, and of course, livestock of all shapes and sizes. Summer concerts are another popular draw, and this year includes a variety of artists from Little Big Town to Kansas and more. The fair will run June 1 through July 4, and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in June. Hours vary from day to day, so check times and find out about more special events at www.sdfair.com. ¢

PLAN FOR PARKING!

Check the weather ahead of time and dress in comfortable clothes for walking. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are a good idea for sunny days, and bring a water bottle if you're staying all day.

Onsite parking is available, as well as free offsite parking with shuttle service to the fair. Due to crowds and traffic, getting there can be hectic – be sure to leave with plenty of time to get to any special events you’re looking forward to.

COMMUNITY STUFF

2018 Woman of the Year Scripps Ranch resident Cheryl Shaw was recently named the 77th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year for her volunteer work supporting disaster relief and public safety. “Cheryl Shaw is a committed volunteer and resolute leader,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “Her wholehearted support for victims of the 2003 Cedar Fire and 2007 Witch Creek Fire contributed so much to the community.” Cheryl has been chair of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association Neighborhood Watch since 2010. Since then, the group has grown to the largest neighborhood watch group in the county. She organizes an annual Night Out every August to strengthen ties between neighbors and law enforcement, fire safety, and local government offices. She and her husband, Mike, have two children and five grandchildren who all live locally. The Woman of the Year program began in 1987 as a State of California effort to celebrate extraordinary women and commemorate Women’s History Month.

Shoal Creek Students Give Back Shoal Creek Elementary School students recently spent three days fundraising for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego as part of the organization’s Red Shoe Crew program. The program fosters a sense of charity and engagement among children by having them educate their peers on the charity’s mission. The Shoal Creek students collected $1,000 in donations to benefit families of hospitalized children staying at the Ronald McDonald House. “Children are many times only concerned about bettering themselves and are caught up in a ‘me’ world,” explained Christie Setnan, a fifth grade teacher and student council coordinator at the school. “This fundraiser puts them in a position to help another child and their families and also see how far their donation can help others. Teaching this is one thing, but having the students actually put their donations in the big red shoe makes it a reality.” Learn more at www.rmhcsd.org.

PowPAC Presents Steel Magnolias PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, closes out its 37th season with Steel Magnolias, a comedy that delves into touching humor even through a community’s darkest hours. The play centers around a Louisiana beauty salon – the social hub for free advice and hilarious banter. When one client’s diabetic daughter risks her life with a dangerous pregnancy, the play takes a tragic turn, but still highlights the community’s underlying strength, love, and humor. The play was written by American actor and playwright Robert Harling, inspired by the death of his sister, Susan. Steel Magnolias opens Friday, May 11, and closes Sunday, June 10. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Discounts are available for students, seniors, and active duty military. Join the cast on opening night for a complimentary postperformance reception. Find tickets and learn more at www.powpac.org.

Summer Book Sale The Friends of the Rancho Bernardo Library (RB Friends) will host their summer book sale on Saturday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library. Fill a bag full of books for $5, or just $3 for RB Friends members. “This library means a great deal to people in our community and every penny from this sale goes toward new products for the library, new programs for both children and adults and the presentation of cultural events like concerts,” shared Diane Heinz, RB Friends Bookshop Manager. She explained the sale is also a great opportunity to meet fellow library patrons and learn more about new programs at the library. RB Friends programs include Classical, Jazz, and Discovery Concert series, with upcoming performances on May 9, May 12, and May 23. For more information visit www.friendsoftheranchobernardolibrary.org.

Partners in Education Golf Classic The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Foundation invites the community to the 11th Annual Poway Unified School Partners in Education Golf Classic on Friday, May 11, at Maderas Golf Club. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. The foundation is seeking both sponsors and players to help support PUSD students at the signature fundraising event. Proceeds will benefit district-wide STEAM initiatives, including fifth grade band, internships, and Project Lead the Way, which provides hands-on, realworld learning opportunities for students and training for teachers. The golf classic includes breakfast on the course, a post-golf reception, and an awards and auction luncheon. Individual and foursome registration is available, as well as several sponsorship levels. Learn more at www.birdeasepro.com/PUSDFoundation.

2018 Creek to Bay Cleanup I Love A Clean San Diego’s (ILACSD) 16th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup drew approximately 6,000 volunteers to 113 cleanup sites around San Diego County in late April. During the threehour cleanup, volunteers across the county removed more than 175,000 pounds of trash and debris, helping to enhance the overall health and beauty of San Diego’s natural environment. Volunteers participated in beautification projects such as painting park structures, planting native trees and plants, mulching, and weeding. Participants also showcased their zero waste commitments this year in the “Rocking Reusables” Sony Photo Contest. Creek to Bay is one of two annual county-wide cleanups and hundreds of specific local cleanups hosted by ILACSD each year. Learn more at www.ilacsd.org.

Theater programs at Bernardo Heights Middle School (BHMS) give students the opportunity to discover and explore their passion for performance – and so much more. Whether they want a turn in the spotlight, a chance to get creative with costume design, or to learn the technical intricacies of lighting and rigging, students are front and center in every performance. Musical Theater Director Katie Newbanks shared more with 92128 Magazine.

Q&A with Katie Newbanks,

Musical Theater Director WHAT IS THE MISSION OF THE THEATER DEPARTMENT AT YOUR SCHOOL?

WHAT CLASSES AND CLUBS ARE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO BE INVOLVED?

The mission of the Performing Arts Department at BHMS is to give as many students as possible the experience of collaborating and performing.

The Performing Arts Department offers many opportunities to BHMS students – Beginning, Advanced, and Jazz Bands, Beginning and Advanced Orchestra, Beginning and Advanced Choir, Advanced Musical Theatre Class, Musical Theatre Club, and Drama.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT?

The Performing Arts Department is constantly changing and growing. The Musical Theatre Club specifically was founded in 2013 by me and Rachel Johnson. When we started, it was with 24 students who performed a short 40-minute musical with few costumes and no sets. Over the past five years, we have definitely grown and evolved. Laura Miles became our musical director in 2015. We now have up to 200 kids audition for our shows, and we present full-length Broadway shows, complete with props, sets, and costumes all designed and worked on by students. Our backstage crew is all students as well. We now have high school students who have gone through our program and come back to help mentor the middle schoolers. We present two full-scale musicals each year with casts of 50 to 70.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE IN THE DEPARTMENT, AND WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL? I am the director of the Musical Theatre Club. Along with Laura Miles, the music director, we run all aspects of the Musical Theatre Club. WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND, AND WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN WORKING WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS? I have worked professionally as an actress, as well as a theater producer. I also taught middle school and high school theatre for many years. I began working as a choreographer for a middle school show choir while still in college. That experience sparked my interest in working with middle school students. I found my people!

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR ROLE? THE MOST CHALLENGING?

AT-A-GLANCE Musical Theater Director

Producing two full-scale musicals a year with at least 100 students on stage and behind the scenes can be very challenging, but the finished product is also the most rewarding.

WHO DESIGNS THE SETS AND COSTUMES FOR THE SCHOOL’S SHOWS?

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY RECENT PRODUCTIONS? We just finished up Schoolhouse Rock in January, which was so much fun!

I conceptualize what I want the sets and costumes to look like, then my husband, Danny Newbanks, comes up with the set design, and my mother, Mary Acosta, and brother, Tim McLaughlin, run with the costume design.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY UPCOMING PRODUCTIONS?

ASIDE FROM PERFORMING IN A PRODUCTION, WHAT OTHER ROLES ARE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS?

ARE THERE ANY WAYS FOR THE COMMUNITY TO GET INVOLVED?

We try to make our shows as student-led as possible. Costume, Prop, Set, and Publicity Crews are staffed by students, with either a parent or high school mentor leading them. We have student stage managers leading our backstage crews, and we also have students running the front of house.

We are switching gears and presenting The Lion King Jr. on May 17 to 19. This will be our most ambitious show yet, with many exciting costumes and masks.

We always welcome help from the community! Anyone interested in helping out can email us at bhmsmusicaltheater@yahoo.com.

Education: B.A. in Theatre Communications, M.A. in Teaching with Technology Community: Westwood Hobbies & Interests: Traveling, theater, reading, spending time with my family Family: Husband – Danny; children – Kaylee (Sophomore at RBHS) and Carly (seventh grader at BHMS) Favorite Places in 92128: Bernardo Heights Middle School and Rancho Bernardo High School

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE MEMORIES OR EXPERIENCES AT BERNARDO HEIGHTS MIDDLE SCHOOL? I have had too many wonderful memories and experiences at BHMS to count. I will say winning our first National Youth Arts awards last year was very exciting.

Summer Advice

A

Extra

s the school year quickly comes to a close, students are beginning to look towards a long-awaited summer. While summer provides students the well-deserved opportunity to recharge, it is also a good time to pursue activities that they normally don’t have time for during the school year. Many students, particularly juniors, participate in internships over the summer in order to stay active while also pursuing their interests. Among the many benefits of internships is exposure to a potential career, which gives students invaluable insight when deciding what colleges to apply to and what majors to pursue. Even students who have not made any plans for summer yet can still use their time productively. Oftentimes, during the school year, students are so overwhelmed with classes and extracurriculars that it can be difficult to find time to pursue their own hobbies. During the summer, students can put school on hold and spend more time doing

activities they enjoy. Additionally, for students looking to enhance their college applications, a great way to do so is through community involvement. With much more time available, students can spend their summers gaining volunteer hours while doing meaningful work in their communities. Although students should make sure that they are staying active over the summer, they should also set aside time to relax with friends and family before the school year begins. Regardless of what students have planned for the summer, the most important thing to keep in mind is to find a balance between relaxation and productivity. ¢

TUTORING PROFILE

ENRICHING MINDS AND BODIES EDU Learning Center Gives Students the Opportunity to Grow in Academics and Physical Education by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Tyler McElhaney

F

or Daniel Kim, the owner of EDU Learning Center, the motivation to establish a comprehensive after-school program came from a desire to support working parents and offer a place where the needs of both children and parents are met in the areas of academics and physical education. “I was also motivated to improve the after school environment by centering our programs on our mind, body, and character concept. Our programs strive to teach academic excellence, enhance emotional and physical well-being, and build character within a safe and caring environment,” explained Kim. EDU Learning Center offers after-school care for students in grades K through 12 that includes homework assistance, academic tutoring, SAT preparation, as well as classes in foreign languages (Korean, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish), music, dance (ballet, ballroom, and hip-hop), rhythmic gymnastics, Tae Kwon Do, chess, and visual arts. Transportation is provided from students’ schools to the EDU Learning Center facility in Rancho Bernardo. Classes are offered year-round and special camps, seminars, and sessions are held during non-student days and holidays. EDU Learning Center also has an exciting Summer Camp, providing full day and short day options for children of all ages. Kim, who studied mechanical engineering at San Diego State University and is a fifth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, credits both his academic experiences and those in martial arts for his dedication to helping children and their parents. “The passion, guidance, and leadership I acquired from martial arts allowed me to excel in teaching and granted me the opportunity to work with children in the afterschool environment,” stated Kim. In addition to directing all programs at EDU Learning Center, Kim is the main training instructor for the Tae Kwon Do program. Kim is proud that all instructors and staff at EDU Learning Center

MP AT-A-GLANCE

share his passion for working with children and are highly qualified in their areas of instruction. From the time he was young, Kim realized the sacrifices that parents make to provide afterschool enrichment activities for their children. He especially noted how difficult it can be for working parents to drive their students from school to various activities throughout San Diego County. “EDU Learning Center is a place for students to discover their true talents and explore their interests through enrichment activities that are offered in one convenient location. This unity between our programs and activities also allows close bonds to be established among staff, students, and families,” said Kim. EDU Learning Center will be having a Summer Camp from June 18 to Aug. 17, where students will have opportunities to visit local attractions around San Diego County, participate in outdoor/indoor sport activities, maintain or advance their academic skills, and explore new enrichment courses that are not offered during the school year such as cooking, wood shop, C.A.D & C.A.M (Computer Aid Design/ Manufacturing), and STEAM based workshops. The camp offers great flexibility with students’ summer schedules as the programs are offered the entire camp session with new topics and projects introduced weekly. The programs aim to keep students active, stay prepared or ahead in academics, and explore new interests all while having fun and making friends! ¢

The ABCs of Osteoarthritis

The arrival of Spring means it’s time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors! So don’t let your osteoarthritis (OA) keep you from enjoying a more active lifestyle. Also called degenerative joint disease, OA is one of the most common chronic diseases among U.S. adults. It affects about 30 million people and is characterized by pain and stiffness in the hands, knees, hips, and other areas. In people age 50 or older, OA is usually a natural result of normal wear and tear on your joints. In healthy joints, cartilage and synovial fluid allow the ends of your bones to glide smoothly over each other during movement. Over time, the layer of cartilage can wear down or break away and synovial fluid becomes thinner, causing the pain and stiffness, limited range of motion, and creaking sounds associated with OA. In younger people, OA is often the result of joint injury or overuse. Treatment of OA Most doctors recommend a combination of self-management and medication to treat OA. In the most severe cases, surgery may be recommended. n Heat and cold. Applying mild heat to sore areas increases blood flow to your joints. Cold packs (bags of ice or frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel) help by numbing the painful area. n

Physical activity. It may seem counterintuitive, but regular, gentle exercise, including light weight

training, yoga, and tai chi can help strengthen nearby muscles and tendons and increase range of motion.

n

n

n

n

Weight loss can help reduce the stress on weight-bearing joints such as knees and hips. Medication. Over the counter drugs, such as non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen, block the production of pain causing chemicals. Be aware that both can cause serious side effects and are not intended for longterm use. If OTCs aren’t effective, ask your Physician about prescription alternatives. Acupuncture. Some studies have shown acupuncture to be effective in treating OA as well as back and neck pain, chronic headaches, and shoulder pain. Surgery. If you’ve explored all other options and still can’t find relief, your Primary Care Physician may refer you to an Orthopedic Surgeon. CENTER STAGE SAN DIEGO LOCAL JACKIE FOSTER TAKES THE STAGE TO COMPETE ON THE VOICE by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Tyler Golden/NBC

T

wenty-two-year-old Jackie Foster has been singing on stage for most of her life. “I have been singing around San Diego since the age of eight,” recalled Jackie. “Music is all I have ever known and all I have ever wanted to pursue.” Now, as a contestant on television’s hit show The Voice, Jackie is living out her dreams as she makes one of the biggest musical performances of her life. When Jackie’s audition for The Voice aired on national television, her life changed dramatically. “Many people have been reaching out since my news about The Voice got out,” shared Jackie. “Friends, teachers, and community members have contacted me to congratulate me.” Jackie – who grew up in Poway – has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love she has received from everyone back home. “I can’t thank everyone enough for being so thoughtful and showing their support!” Jackie is currently a senior at Berklee College of Music in Boston. When she’s home

during college breaks, she enjoys hiking with her mom around Lake Poway and Blue Sky Reserve. Throughout Jackie’s journey on The Voice, she’s been challenged by trying to stay positive. “While it’s very easy to say ‘don’t compare yourself,’ there are times when you feel the enormity of the show,” she shared. “It can be a stressful process when you are around remarkable singers in a competition.” Befriending her fellow Voice contestants has helped Jackie cope with these challenges. “The contestants really want the best for one another,” she said. It also doesn’t hurt to have the support of the superstar coaches – Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton. Even with the rush of fame that has so suddenly come her way, Jackie certainly doesn’t have any trouble keeping things in perspective. “I feel so grateful for this experience,” said Jackie. “I am going to soak up all of this and apply it towards every aspect of my life!” For more on Jackie’s journey, visit her on social media: @itsjackiefoster. ¢

Reconsidering Mello-Roos after the New Tax Law by SCOTT VOAK

T

he newly-passed tax law and its limitation of $10K deduction for state and local taxes (income and property) means that most, if not all, people who are paying Mello-Roos fees have lost the ability to deduct them on their federal income taxes. What I’m trying to determine is if it’s a financially sound move to pay them off, and while I expected it to be an easy answer, there are several complications. The first revolves around any discount you might receive when you pay them off. I have one friend who, before he moved, paid off his Mello-Roos. He claimed that he paid off a $1,550/year payment that had 20 years left on it for $20,000. While these are round numbers, they would indicate that the bond carries an interest rate of approximately 5%. When the MelloRoos was deductible, this would have effectively been reduced to about 3%. Whether you pay it off depends on if you think you can earn more than 5% somewhere else. If you think you can make 7-9% on investment property out of state (our investors do), then you probably don’t pay it off. If you would otherwise put it in a CD making less than 1%, then it might make sense to eliminate the payment. On the other hand, I have a very smart friend who sells bonds for a living, including the Mello-Roos bonds. He claims that if you pay off your bond, you don’t get a discount, but have to pay the full amount. So, using

his explanation, my first friend would have had to pay $1,550 times 20, which would have been no discount and not made much sense at all. According to my bond-trading friend, you can only pay off the Mello-Roos at a discount when the house is first sold. He also brings up a very good point: we shouldn’t assume that the tax law will remain the same going forward. It is possible that the next administration may flip back and make all state taxes deductible. What is the right answer? I’ve got two smart people who have given conflicting information. So, what I am doing is filing a request for my personal Mello-Roos payoff. I should have that information by the next issue, and I will conclude this article with what I learn as well as information on how you can pay off your Mello-Roos if you decide to. ¢

HOME IMPROVEMENT PROFILE

TRITON WATER RENEWAL Providing Clean, Safe Pool Water by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Heather Elise Photography

A

s a Southern California native, Jeff Henneforth realizes the importance of conserving water. “Saving water should always be something we are all striving for,” said Jeff, who along with his wife, Rachel, is a Poway High School alumnus. Years ago, when Jeff needed the pump replaced for his swimming pool, water preservation (and cleanliness) took on a whole new meaning. “The company that installed our new pump recommended a company that did reverse osmosis for pools,” recalled Jeff. “I’ve owned homes with pools in Texas, Nevada, and California, and I’ve always had to drain or half-drain the pool at some point to try and get better water. Seeing a trailer that could filter my pool water and utilize a unique software system that allowed control of the trailer remotely was very exciting and just made sense. This is a great service and a new industry.” And with that, Jeff started Triton Water Renewal, a company that cleans pool water by using a mobile reverse osmosis system, helping to save water, improve water quality, and maintain the life of pool plaster and equipment. “We can process 40,000 gallons a day remotely with a Cummings generator providing power to the pumps, all enclosed in a 16-foot trailer,” explained Jeff. “We use a powerful UV light (killing any living bacteria) and a reverse osmosis filtration system to clean the water.” Jeff explained that the reverse osmosis process can save up to 85 to 90 percent of customers’ existing pool water. “If you have a 20,000-gallon pool and can save 17,000 of 50 • 92128MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2018

those gallons instead of dumping it down a drain, that’s a win for everyone,” said Jeff. In addition to saving water, Triton Water Renewal improves the quality of pool water. “In Southern California, we get the end of the Colorado River water. Usually this means high calcium, salt, pesticides, chloramines, and other runoff type by-products in our water supply,” Jeff said. “This is the water we fill our pools with and then we add a lot of chlorine, salt, and tablets to the water to keep the algae at bay.” Over time, the chemicals added to our pools burn off and leave behind solids in the water molecules known as Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), which, Jeff explained, make the water extremely hard and require the use of even more chemicals to keep the water clear. “The water that we produce is 100 percent drinkable,” said Jeff. “We are currently in the process of getting our FEMA accreditation to be a pure water provider in the event of natural disasters.” An added benefit to using Triton Water Renewal’s system is extending the life of the pool and its equipment. “The number one killer in pool equipment, especially heaters, is calcification,” Jeff stated. “Cleaning the water with filtration and maintaining healthy calcium and TDS levels in the water keeps all kinds of problems at bay and provides clean, safe pool water with the minimum amount of added chemicals.” “This is a new and exciting service for people who swim a lot and know good pools versus bad ones,” said Jeff. “We are excited to be on the ground floor of this new industry!” ¢
