Graduation Is in the Air

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux

A

s we approach summer, there’s a little something more than warmer days looming in the air. Graduation is upon us. Elementary is promoted to middle school. Middle schoolers move on to high school. High school... College… Graduations, celebrations, and transitions are all around us during May and June. For those of you that know us personally or have been along for the ZCode Magazines journey, it will come as no surprise that my wife and I run a very busy household. Having three kids, it seems that every time we turn around, one of them is advancing to a new chapter in their lives. A close relative gave me some good advice many years ago. He said not to blink, meaning that time flies when you have kids, and they’ll be grown before you know it. And as much as I try to take that advice, I must be blinking more than I realize. Things seem to be moving way too fast! This month, our oldest daughter, Ashley, will graduate college and begin her journey in the MBA program. To say that my wife and I are proud of her is a dramatic understatement. We are constantly impressed with her passion for life, her dedication to her family and friends, and her commitment to success. It seems like yesterday when I was sitting at this same computer writing about Ashley graduating high school. I must have blinked! This 22-year-old woman is the same little girl that we taught to ride a bike at the age of three. The little girl that we began coaching in soccer at the age of four, eventually developing into a speedster that could outrun nearly every opponent down the sideline when given the opportunity. Believe it or not, she’s still outrunning opponents in the various soccer leagues that she plays in for fun – not to mention the soccer teams that she coaches. As parents, my wife and I couldn’t ask for a better big sister for our two younger kiddos. She has set a great example for them, and they are always thrilled to have her around, whether she is watching them play sports or just hanging at the house playing games. She makes time in her busy schedule to nurture those relationships. She takes her role as a big sister seriously. Those that know Ashley would be the first to say that she is their biggest fan. So, my wife and I would like to send a special congratulations to our little Ashley. You did it! You continue to impress us. We are proud of you, and more importantly, we hope you are just as proud of yourself. As much as we try not to blink, we can’t wait to watch you on your journey through the MBA program and beyond. Keep up the good work and don’t forget to set aside a little time to take it all in. Congrats to all the graduates in our community! There are a few days that you remember for the rest of your life, and graduation day is one of them. P.S. I would also like to congratulate our youngest daughter, Audrey. She’ll be making her transition into high school this year. Keep up the great work! We are proud of you.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

Summer More than

Camp

Katie Kelly Serves the Community in the Classroom and Around the Campfire by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Forever Photography by Liberty

K

“I wanted to share this life-changing experience with as many people as possible.”

atie Kelly knows the power in connecting with young people and creating a community of belonging. As a teacher and camp director, her influence is felt from the classroom to the campfire. In addition to her work as a first grade teacher at Willow Grove Elementary School, Katie is the founder of Camp Kinneloa, a residential camp serving children with Type 1 diabetes. Katie’s inspiration to start Camp Kinneloa was born of her own experience as a child. She has Type 1 diabetes and attended diabetes camp. “There was a delightfully refreshing sense of ‘normalcy’ there as I found myself in a crowd of kids with Type 1,” she acknowledged. “I remember leaving camp feeling empowered. There was a newfound motivation behind taking care of myself, knowing that my friends were headed home to do the same.” This experience as a child, combined with her nine summers of working at Outpost Summer Camps as a counselor and director, has led Katie to open Camp Kinneloa. “I wanted to share this life-changing experience with as many people as possible,” she shared. Katie’s work as camp director mirrors her philosophy in her first grade classroom. “I love building relationships with my students and creating a community that feels like a place of belonging for them,” she shared. “One of the most rewarding parts is seeing their confidence develop as they learn and grow.” Of course, just as with summer camp, there is no shortage of adventure, she noted. “Working with six and seven year olds provides you plenty of entertaining stories as well!” Katie is surrounded by a family who understands the hurdles in the classroom and camp. Her husband, Patrick, is a special education teacher at Santana High School in Santee. Katie’s sister and brother-in-law are the owners of Outpost Summer Camps. “Apparently, camp runs in the family!” she said. Camp Kinneloa will hold its first camp session from June 24 to 29 at the Cuyamaca Retreat Center. The camp is currently looking for volunteer counselors and medical staff. SOROPTIMIST CLUBS RAISE OVER $100,000 FOR WOMEN IN NEED photos by Dawn Hough Sebaugh Photography

A

pair of local philanthropic organizations have proved the power of collaboration, hard work, and a sensational party for the ninth year running. Soroptimist International of North San Diego (SINSD) and Soroptimist International of Poway (SIP) together raised more than $100,000 in net profits at Hats and Heels, benefiting women in need. The event, previously known as High Tea, hosted nearly 400 guests – in their best hats – at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar for an afternoon of social entertainment. The live auctions, games, raffles, and paddle raise were all popular opportunities to contribute, and included a range of items from a diamond necklace from Unicorn Jewelry to a two-night stay at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. Entertainment included music from Poway High School senior Kylie Kim and her father, Stan,

and singer-songwriter Floyd A. Smith from The 5th Dimension. Amanda Roane, a graduate of the Soroptimist Transitional Housing Program, shared her story on stage as well. Proceeds from Hats and Heels will benefit a number of Soroptimist programs. Transitional Housing is an 18-month program providing survivors of domestic violence with safe housing, financial aid, and mentoring. Live Your Dream provides scholarships to women who provide the primary source of income for their families, allowing them to further their education. Dream It Be It provides career support for girls in local schools. STAT! targets human trafficking, focusing on public awareness, education, and survivor support. TOBY WELLS FOUNDATION GOLF CLASSIC HELPS KIDS AND ANIMALS IN NEED

T

he Toby Wells Foundation will hold its 18th Annual Toby Wells & Craig Castaneda Golf Classic on June 14 at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside. This year’s theme is Route 66. The tournament is the foundation’s primary fundraising tool to fund all of the programs that provide support to hundreds of underprivileged children and neglected animals throughout San Diego County and other parts of Southern California. The Toby Wells Foundation was first established after Adrienne Wells and April West began searching for ways to raise funds and

awareness and honor the memory of their brother Toby, who died from medical complications after paralysis from a swimming accident. The tournament began shortly after the foundation’s establishment, when the Wells family purchased a 300-acre ranch called Blue Apple Ranch. The ranch is populated with several types of rescued animals who are cared for by disenfranchised and disabled children. Toby was known for his love of animals and frequently rescued dogs in animal shelters. Proceeds from the tournament will go to funding a one-day, outdoor afternoon of fun

for 250 local foster youth through the nonprofit Voices for Children, field trips for children of military households through the Armed Services YMCA, a work-readiness internship for foster youth at San Pasqual Academy and at-risk youth from Abraxas High School and Warner Springs High School, a holiday shopping spree for Polinsky Children’s Center and the Armed Services YMCA where each child receives a $200 gift card to Walmart, and assistance in caring for Blue Apple Ranch’s rescued animals. For more information about the foundation or to buy tickets visit www.tobywells.org. 

FINANCIAL PROFILE

San Diego Made WHEELHOUSE CREDIT UNION OFFERS FINANCIAL EXPERTISE TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY by KELLEY GUSICH

W

heelhouse Credit Union has a long history in the San Diego community. Beginning in 1934 as San Diego Municipal Employees Credit Union, the Credit Union was created by metropolitan workers seeking financial relief during the worst economic period in the nation’s history. “After a few iterations,” Wheelhouse President and CEO Lisa Paul-Hill explained, “over nearly a century (including most recently San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union), our name today – Wheelhouse Credit Union – is unique to a financial institution, and reflects who we are and what we have been to our members for over 85 years.” “As a member-owned, not-for-profit institution, we make decisions based solely on what is best for members and seek their input along the way,” shared Paul-Hill. Offering high-yield deposit products and low-rate loan products (like water conservation, energy efficiency, and solar loans), Wheelhouse received the 2017 Business of the Year Award for their Solar & Energy Efficiency Programs. Created in 2011 and one of the first solar lenders in California, the Energy Efficiency Program focuses on each homeowner’s energy saving needs. “We are proud of our green efforts resulting in a savings of approximately 105,795,420 kWh of electricity per year, which is the equivalent of saving 1,907,030 trees!” exclaimed Paul-Hill. Wheelhouse Credit Union is truly “San Diego Made,” comprised of employees and members who live and work in communities throughout San Diego. Wheelhouse also volunteers much time and energy locally. As the official credit union to the San Diego Seals professional lacrosse team, employees actively volunteer side-by-side with Seals players, most recently with Feeding San Diego and Read – Lisa Paul-Hill Across America. In addition, Wheelhouse staff gets involved with Toys for Tots, I Love a Clean San Diego Coastal Cleanup, Make-A-Wish, and San Diego EarthFair Balboa Park, as these events embody Wheelhouse’s commitment to giving back to the community. These team members are what makes the business different from traditional banks – it’s not uncommon to walk into a Wheelhouse branch and see the same familiar face you first met 10 or 20 years ago. “Our culture, teamwork, and collaboration are drivers of our success,” Paul-Hill affirmed. New and exciting things are happening at Wheelhouse Credit Union. The downtown branch is undergoing a total renovation, and Wheelhouse recently launched a new website with easy navigation and helpful financial tools. Accounts are accessible 24/7 with nationwide access to over 5,000 shared branches and more than 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs through the CO-OP® Network. Anyone living or working in San Diego County is invited to join Wheelhouse Credit Union. Check out the new high-yield checking, savings, and money market accounts bearing the name Inspired. 

A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // COACH CHRIS As far back as I can remember, sports have always been a part of who I am – from baseball and basketball to football and surfing. But there was just something extra special about soccer that lit a fire inside me that still burns today. I have four daughters, and the day I became a dad I knew I would teach them about sports in hopes that they, too, would find that same passion. They did; each one played soccer, so coaching became a natural progression for me. I started coaching in 2014 and eventually found Force FC. I like their possession-based style and the family environment they foster, which is how I feel about my teams. I treat each one as an extension of my family. I want each individual player to know that I care, and although mistakes happen in training or games, I tell them it's not whether they make a mistake or not, it's how they react that makes them a great teammate and person. While motivation is key, once they believe in themselves and put in the work, they’ll realize success will follow. Take care of the little things and big things will happen. When I’m not on the soccer field, I’m reading, watching a game, golfing, snowboarding, and spending time with my wife and kids.

COMMUNITY STUFF

10th Annual Hats Off to Volunteers

The 10th Annual Hats Off to Volunteers Program recognized individual volunteers making a difference with nearly 70 local nonprofits. The event, hosted by the RB Community Foundation (RBCF), was held at Rancho Bernardo High School and included both the award ceremony and an expo with display tables from 22 of the groups being honored. More than 200 community members attended. “This is always a wonderful event and the RB Community Foundation is very proud to organize this every year,” shared Debbie Kurth, RBCF President and Hats Off Chair. “We are the only community in San Diego that honors their volunteers with a program like this, which makes this extra special for us. It is a great way to honor all of the individuals that work so hard all year long helping others in Rancho Bernardo.” Recognized volunteers and groups have made a difference in all areas of Rancho Bernardo life, from health and safety to arts and education, from youths to seniors. PowPAC Presents Exit Laughing In Exit Laughing, a fast-pasted comedy by Paul Elliot, three southern ladies turn tragedy into the wildest night of their lives. Their 30-year-strong weekly card night is interrupted by the inconvenient death of their fourth friend. Connie, Leona, and Millie decide to “borrow” their friend’s ashes from the funeral home for one final card game that takes a number of unexpected turns, starting with a police raid and getting crazier from there. The production by PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, is directed by Gil Savage, who directed last season’s popular comedy Quartet. The cast includes Joyce McHugh as Connie, Lucinda Moaney as Millie, Peg Daly as Leona, and Jamie Penry, the charming young dancer working his way through college. The play opens Friday, May 3 and will run for five weekends, closing Sunday, June 2. Learn more and find tickets at www.powpac.org.

9th Annual Chalk It Up The 9th Annual Chalk It Up! event is scheduled for Saturday, May 4 at Sharp Rees-Stealy Rancho Bernardo Campus. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in conjunction with Sharp Rees-Stealy’s second anniversary at the Rancho Bernardo location. The anniversary celebrations will include music, entertainment, facility tours, and healthy food. The Rancho Bernardo Community Council will provide a bucket of chalk to each participant, who will have all the time they need to express their sidewalk artistry. Prizes will be awarded for first through third place in each age category, with gift certificates donated by local businesses. Every participant will receive a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich coupon, and there will be a special opportunity drawing for an art experience at Painting With a Twist. Learn more at www.rbcommunitycouncil.com.

3rd Annual Poodles on Parade The 3rd Annual Poodles On Parade Extravaganza will run Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19 for three days of poodle-centric fun. Friday night will start with a “yappy hour” and dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 at Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Human attendees should bring food for their own poodles due to possible allergies, and register in advance at poodlesonparade@gmail.com. Saturday is an all-day affair at Webb Park, with vendors, raffles, a mini petting zoo, professional photo opportunities, and demonstrations. The parade itself will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a number of contests recognizing poodles with the best hairdo, trick, costume, and matching human costume. Preregistration is required for some activities, including boxed lunches from Elements Café and a second happy hour at Koi Zen Cellars Craft Winery. The final event is an agility demonstration Sunday at Rancho Bernardo Park by the Ed Brown Center. See more at www.spiritofthefourth.org/poodlesonparade.html.

Local Orchestra Welcomes Guest Artists

Local musicians recently joined with their internationally acclaimed guest artist for a performance that still has the community talking. The Poway Symphony Orchestra and Conductor John LoPiccolo collaborated with piano soloist Fred Moyer for an outstanding rendition of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The orchestra looks forward to another collaborative concert later this month. The Benefic Piano Trio will take the stage at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts on May 19. “The trio is made up of top-notch musicians, all graduates of the famous Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles,” shared LoPiccolo. “One can be assured of their unique talents.” The trio is composed of Sunhwa Kim on piano, Misha Vayman on violin, and Cello Guo on cello, and will be joining the orchestra to perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto in C Major. “This concerto represents an example of his mastery of composing for such a unique combination,” said LoPiccolo. The Poway Symphony Orchestra will also play Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 that night. Learn more at www.powaysymphonyorchestra.org.

tudent creativity shines at Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS). Visual arts classes give young

artists a chance to discover new passions and develop talent, under the guidance of RBHS’s dedicated art teachers. Available classes dive deep into traditional and digital media, offering a variety of fields to explore. Digital Media students produce a regular news broadcast called Bronco TV for the whole school, as well as student films and covering live events. Screen Printing and Photography students learn how to use technology to blend art and design. We speak with teachers Miriam Larson and Paul Messerle to learn more.

Our mission is to offer a means of self-expression through various types of media, as well as encourage college and career readiness to any student who seeks to discover their personal meaning and satisfaction through the visual arts.

What is your professional background, and what sparked your interest in teaching art?

Jewelry Photography Screen printing

Making art is the thing that has always inspired my life. I have been doing arts and crafts since I was in grade school. Because I get joy from practicing art, it is a natural fit for me to teach others to make art. I got my B.S. in Art Education from Penn State in the

late 1970s. When money was most important to me, I worked in sales and marketing for many years. Now, personal satisfaction is the main focus of my work life, so I decided to use my credential.

How did you personally become involved with the department? I applied for a screen printing teaching job that was advertised and got the position. I found that I loved working with high school kids. They are at the beginning of their journey into their adult lives and full of promise. They are smart, fun, playful, and inquisitive. Teaching them art was my dream job! When I had the chance to teach other art classes I moved into the Drawing and Painting and Design in Mixed Media classrooms. I also started a jewelry class here three years ago.

What is the most rewarding part of your role? The most challenging? I love when a student comes into my classroom and thinks they can’t draw. Through teaching them basic skills and

introducing drawing and painting projects step by step, they find that they can draw better than they had ever hoped. I explain that all artists are on a continuum of learning skill and if they stick with it they will get better and better. The most challenging part of my job is to engage students that don’t enjoy school.

What have been some of the most popular projects for the students? Any particular highlights from this year? The gridded portrait is the project where students see that they can draw. It is always rewarding. Soldering rings is a popular project in Jewelry, and making tin masks is a favorite in Design and Mixed Media. Our AP artists always provide an array of incredible talent.

How have the classes grown or changed over the years? Our class size is about 38 students per period. That number has increased from 30 since I started teaching. We always try to provide electives that are popular among the students.

Q&A

WITH What is your professional background, and what sparked your interest in teaching art? I have taught at RBHS for 23 years and was briefly a museum educator before that. I am a second-generation teacher and feel most at home in the classroom setting. I was the Teacher of the Year for both Rancho Bernardo High School and Poway Unified School District in 2015, and a San Diego County Teacher of the Year in 2016.

How did you personally become involved with the department? The courses that I teach are deeply personal, as they mirrored my own life interests and courses studied when I was in college. Within a year of me being hired in 1996, I spearheaded the creation of classes that would expand the Art Department’s offerings, namely, Animation, Computer Graphic Art, and AP Art History. Each course offering has evolved and become streamlined over time to match the multiple learning modalities of its enrollees.

What is the most rewarding part of your role? The most challenging? The most rewarding part of my job is seeing my students thrive in class, achieve their college and career goals, and return to share their experiences with current students. Three alumni serve as professional advisors for our annual CTE Advisory Committee, which validates the pathway and the need for our programs. The most challenging aspect of my role is staying abreast of the newest technologies and software, all while making assignments not only rigorous but relevant to the students’ lives and interests.

What have been some of the most popular projects for the students? Any particular highlights from this year? Student project favorites include The Alchemist’s Studio, a 3D generated environment where a student tells their autobiography using objects created to represent key moments in their life, while also including an item rendered

How have the classes grown or changed over the years? Classes have evolved with the changing expectations of the media, newer technologies, and student demand.

A Talk With

Dr. Nelson Y. Howard What Patients Need to be Aware of When Choosing a Dentist by DR. NELSON Y. HOWARD

I

n today’s ever demanding world of knowledge and increased consumer awareness, especially in the healthcare field, more people are looking for advanced levels of expertise in the individuals they choose to take care of themselves and their family and friends. There is no better compliment than to have another person in our practice refer someone to our office because of the trust they have in us as well as the precise nature of what we do and the outstanding results we achieve for everyone. That has been the way my two very distinctive dental offices have flourished over the last 33 years. So many dentists nowadays advertise they do everything in their own offices and falsely offer discounted rates or procedure “specials” with conditions to attract new patients to their offices. Furthermore, they advertise themselves to be the “Best” at something or were voted the “Best” by some non-validated organization. Consumers need to be aware that not all dentists practice the same type of dentistry, and cut-rate dentistry is just that, with the results reflecting that as well. In my offices, a significant amount of dentistry we perform is having to redo other dentists’ poor workmanship. This is very upsetting when the patient was misled by the dentist and their lack of skills to treat them properly. A dentist’s credentials and experience should also be checked by any prospective patient, especially in the area of cosmetic dentistry. There’s a saying I have come up with that “every dentist claims to be a cosmetic dentist but not every dentist knows cosmetic dentistry.” Just because a dentist says they do cosmetic dentistry doesn’t make it cosmetic dentistry. I am one of approximately 400 dentists worldwide who has earned the distinction of being an Accredited Member of the prestigious American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Many people are demanding this advanced level of dentistry now more than ever, especially after having been mistreated by someone who claims to have 34 • 92128MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2019

qualifications and skills that cannot be validated. Many dentists simply do not address functional dental issues nor have proper training and knowledge in this area. I have seen that inferior results often break down sooner in someone’s mouth because of a lack of understanding by the dentist in how a person’s mouth functions, especially during chewing. My offices focus on the art and science of comprehensive dentistry. My extensive credentials, experience, knowledge, and training in all these disciplines are for the benefit of my patients. There is a so-called “Teeth in a Day” trend where patients are constantly being misled into believing they walk into a dental office and get “new” teeth the same day when they simply do not. Many of these places remove perfectly healthy teeth as part of the process. I do not perform every dental procedure as so many dentists claim to do nowadays, mostly because they fear losing patient revenues all the while performing substandard care for their patients. I refer my patients to specialists when needed. Patients are appreciative of this, knowing they will be receiving the best care. I believe that any dentist needs to know the limits of what they are able to do for their patients before they start treatment. In summary, it is important that today’s consumers do their proper research when selecting a dentist. Many of my patients come to me for a second opinion when something is not feeling right only to be told what they already know, that the dentistry they recently had done is not correct and needs to unfortunately be redone to correct the problems. If you are having a dental concern, experiencing an ongoing problem from recently completed dental care, want a second opinion, or would like to become a patient in my office, please call either of my offices that is most convenient for you for a complimentary consultation. 45 Years of Singing Together RB CHORALE CELEBRATES MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY photo by Eisenhower Photography

T

he RB Chorale’s annual summer show returns Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 at Poway Center for the Performing Arts. This year’s theme is “The RB Chorale: A Celebration of 45 Years,” and will include some of the chorale’s most popular numbers since its founding in 1974. It’s also a special recognition of Pat Bean, founder and director, whose creativity and dedication have grown the chorale from 16 to 150 members over the years. In addition to making music, the chorale gives back to the community and provides a platform for young artists. The chorale awards scholarships every year to San Diego high school seniors who are planning to continue their musical education through college. This year’s six scholarship finalists will perform at the summer show, and audience votes will determine who wins first, second, and third place

prizes each night. Last year, more than $17,000 was awarded to student musicians, and ticket proceeds for this year’s event will help the organization match or exceed that amount for the 2019 scholarships. General admission is $25, with $22 discounts for seniors, students, and military members. Children’s admission is $17. Preferred seating is available for $35. The RB Chorale recruits every spring and fall in preparation for its big summer and winter shows. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings at Painted Rock Elementary School. DIGITAL MUSIC: HOW CAN I CREATE IT? I

n the last decade the face of digital music recording has changed dramatically. Now, for a modest budget, a bedroom producer can have all of the tools necessary to make a great sounding recording. There’s only one issue… how do you use all this stuff?! Finding the DAW (digital audio workstation) that’s right for you can be a daunting enough task, but knowing the ins and outs of your software can take years to master without guidance. The best bet for any aspiring producer is targeted, hands-on training, customized to their program preferences, learning styles, and experience. YouTube might have a slew of videos, but it’s a distant second to an expert instructor with hands-on training. Luckily, Studio West employs a team of experienced engineers and producers that are happy to show students the ropes. One-onone instruction at Studio West offers aspiring creatives direct answers, not just to broad, easily searchable questions, but specific difficulties with workflow. Offering help in

topics including production and arrangement, mixing and recording, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and FL Studio, the team of experts knows that one-on-one lessons leads to progress in tracks production fairly quickly. Studio West offers one-on-one instruction options to all ages in addition to their year-long post-secondary diploma in audio production. Another not-to-miss opportunity is the Youth Programs, offered over seven individual weeks of summer camps. Pair this with the school year Production Workshop – a quarterly collective of talented kids meeting once a week to produce incredible music – and your teen has a head start in this amazing industry. If you want to up your game, hands-on training is your best bet! 

Woman of the Year

BUSINESS LEADER RECOGNIZED FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

C

ommunity leader Debbie Kurth was recently recognized as the 77th Assembly District’s 2019 Woman of the Year. “Debbie Kurth has been an outstanding volunteer in our district throughout the years,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “The great work that she has done in our community is truly deserving of recognition and praise.” Debbie’s support of local charities, small businesses, and community enrichment has benefited the North County community for years. A Wisconsin native, Debbie moved to Rancho Bernardo in 1989 and quickly became immersed in the local community. She currently serves as president and treasurer of the Rancho Bernardo Business Association,

which promotes small businesses in the area as well as supporting the Spirit of the Fourth Committee, Rancho Bernardo Historical Society, Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, and other local groups. Debbie is serving her second term as President of the RB Community Foundation and has been the chair for the Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon for

the past five years. She also heads the RBCF Annual Hats Off to Volunteers program. She is the longstanding president and treasurer for Woodcrest Heights Homeowners Association and treasurer for the Master Community Association of Bernardo Heights. Her community service is informed by her experiences as owner, founder, and president of Business Services International, a company specializing in meetings and special events worldwide. The California State Assembly’s Women of the Year award began in 1987 to commemorate Women’s History Month and has become an annual Capitol tradition. Teacher of the Year

R

ancho Bernardo High School 20182019 Teacher of the Year Coleen Montgomery has been selected as one of three teachers in the school district to be awarded the distinction of being Poway Unified School District Teacher of the Year. Montgomery has taught at the school since 1999. Currently she teaches a wide array of classes which span all of the grade levels at RB High, including Honors Humanities, AVID, and most recently, A Critical Study of Mass Media. The latter is a class that Montgomery herself introduced to the campus in just the past year. This innovative mindset may have had something to do with the accolades awarded to Montgomery, and it is what she suggests made her a better teacher throughout her career.

“I was trying to do a lot of what other teachers were trying to do,” Montgomery said. “I was so overwhelmed and felt inadequate a lot. Maybe part of my process was just to figure out what I bring to the classroom and that I don’t have to bring what everyone else brings to the classroom.” After she was selected as District Teacher of The Year, she began the process of applying to be considered for the San Diego County Office of Education’s Teacher of the Year Recognition Program, which requires a mountain of interviews and essays. Completing her application in mid-April, Montgomery will find out the results in September along with the other teachers representing their districts in San Diego County.

Principal LeMaster has been working with Montgomery for years and had much praise for her. “She’s supportive, nurturing, encouraging, and at the same time she’s really fantastic about having that student engagement that’s in the classroom at a high level so kids are involved,” LeMaster said. “She’s just an all around amazing educator and resource for our students, so I’m very happy that she was selected to represent all of our teachers, which is what the Teacher of the Year award really is.” 

FUN FOR EVERYONE Belmont Park Has It All! by SAMANTHA EDWARDS | photos courtesy of 123rf.com

M

ission Beach’s iconic wooden Giant Dipper Roller Coaster has been a fixture in San Diego for nearly 95 years. While the coaster and some other historic elements of what was originally called the Mission Beach Amusement Center remain today, the modern-day Belmont Park is now equipped with everything your family needs for a full summer day of amusement and fun. Admission to the park itself is free – tickets for rides and attractions are available separately. For more information visit www.belmontpark.com. 

In addition to classics like the roller coaster, a carousel, and bumper cars, Belmont Park is home to a number of thrill rides with names like Control Freak, Beach Blaster, Octotron, Tilt-a-Whirl, Vertical Plunge, and more.

Looking for more? Other exciting attractions include laser tag, rock climbing, a sky ropes course, an escape room, mini golf, arcade games, carnival-style games, and the Xanadu 7D Theater, complete with stunning digital effects and motion seats.

If all the fun has you working up an appetite, take a quick snack break with grab-andgo tacos, corn dogs, pretzels, burgers, pizza, ice cream, or Dole Whip. Or sit down to a heartier meal at one of the park’s three full-service beachfront restaurants.

Check out the local shops for everything from beachy clothes, bathing suits, and sunglasses to beach toys, towels, and souvenirs.

The park abuts the Mission Beach Boardwalk, which offers plenty of entertainment in its own right. You can rent bikes, roller blades, skateboards, surfboards, and anything else you might want for a day in the sun.

SUPERIOR WATER

Family Business Brings High-Quality Water to Every Tap in Your Home

A

t Superior Water, providing families with clean, reliable water is a family mission. The company and its state-of-the-art filtration system were born in 1996, when brothers Ted and Peter Carlisi realized that San Diego families needed bettertasting, cleaner water – and they could pioneer the solution. Their extensive research and development resulted in the Waterboy System, an exclusive whole-house filtration and conditioning system. “Waterboy Systems use no salt and no chemicals,” explained Joe Carlisi, sales manager and Ted’s son. Ted’s daughter, Elaine Montemarano, is Superior Water’s general manager. Joe continued, “The self-cleaning system is clean for the environment.” Once installed, Waterboy Systems require no maintenance to continue providing clean, filtered water from every tap in the home. Four stages of filtration and conditioning with high-quality, natural media result in great-tasting water from every tap in the home. The system uses high-quality, American-made components, and the whole-house conditioning prevents hard Southern California water from corroding plumbing. “We take care of our customers,” Joe added, citing Superior Water’s worry-free warranty and dedication to customer service. As a family business, the Superior Water team knows how important healthy, reliable water is to their customers. Superior Water has several offices throughout the Southwest region, including right here in 92128, and stays connected in North County San Diego through local Chambers of Commerce and the City of Poway. 
