Oh, to Be Young Again!
W
hen I published my first community magazine, our oldest daughter was in the eighth grade. Our son was in kindergarten, and our youngest daughter hadn’t yet started school. The strange thing is that it feels like 2009 was just yesterday. Fast forward, and our oldest daughter is now a senior in college, our son is an eighth grader, and our youngest daughter is in seventh grade. As you know, I often write about time flying by. This past weekend marked another milestone for the Breaux household. Ashley, our oldest daughter, celebrated her 21st birthday! Much to our surprise, Ashley invited us to go out with her group of friends on her special night in downtown San Diego. After repeatedly asking her if she was sure about having her parents tag along, my wife and I reluctantly agreed to go (along with another lifelong friend of ours that Ashley refers to as Aunt Wendy). We needed another adult from our generation for moral support. The group started at a count of 15 people. We all had dinner at a restaurant downtown before Ubering to the first club. The intentions were to stick around for a little while and then head out. That plan didn’t work out so well, as we ended up staying for the duration of the evening. The night was filled with a variety of emotions. I was observing our baby girl in her adult environment for the very first time. Although we were very much interacting with the group, at times I felt like a fly on the wall – silently observing and taking in the entire experience. She was having a great time Derrick and his daughter Ashley circa 2005. Time flies! with her close friends, laughing, dancing, and celebrating. More of Ashley’s friends kept arriving. Some arrivals were clearly unexpected and a special surprise to her. The entire situation touched our hearts. There was one common theme – everyone was there to celebrate with her on her special day. It was at that moment that I realized our baby girl was grown up. Although some may see it as unconventional, we had a great time celebrating with our daughter and her friends that night. I would like to give a special thanks to Ashley’s friends for being such an important part of her life and enthusiastically welcoming us old people into their circle. I still don’t feel like I’m a “grown up” yet. In many aspects, I still feel the same way that I felt when I was a teenager. But make no mistake about it, watching my baby girl turn 21 years old definitely puts me one step closer in my search to feel grown up. Oh, to be young again…

ot many middle schoolers know what they want to be when they grow up, but not all are like Madalyn Nguyen. She not only knows the field she wants to enter, but the specialty. “My goal is to attend a four-year college for engineering after high school,” she said, and hopes to become “an aerospace engineer working for JPL, NASA, Northrop Grumman, or Boeing.” Madalyn’s wide range of interests has her on the right path. Currently in eighth grade in the Academy at Meadowbrook Middle School, she loves science and technology, taking classes such as integrated science, video production, and computer graphics. An excellent student, she was on the honor roll last year with a 4.0 GPA and received the Ada Lovelace Scholarship for computer programming at University of California San Diego. “I was one of six lucky young women out of hundreds of applicants to win this scholarship,” shared Madalyn. Her passion lies in robotics. She joined a FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League team in sixth grade. As a seventh grader, she was the mechanical co-lead and outreach ambassador for her team, now at the next level called FIRST Tech Challenge. In the spring, this rookie team was invited to the FIRST World Championship in Houston. “It was an honor to compete with the best robotics teams in the world,” Madalyn said, adding, “it’s like the Super Bowl of robotics.” They placed seventh in their division in Houston. This year, she is proud to join Poway High School’s FIRST Robotic Competition on Team Spyder as an 8th grader. “I am looking forward to another great robotics year,” she exclaimed.
“IT WAS AN HONOR TO COMPETE WITH THE BEST ROBOTICS TEAMS IN THE WORLD.” Madalyn also finds time to give back to the community. Last year she received the Bronze Award in Girl Scouts for community service, raising money and collecting school supplies to give to homeless children. She has volunteered for Include Autism, introducing robotics to kids with autism. Madalyn has also helped distribute food to the homeless, and mentored a newly formed FIRST Lego Team at Torrey Pines Elementary School. A Carmel Mountain Ranch native, Madalyn lives with her parents, Michael and Tracy, and her sister, Abby. In her free time, Madalyn can be found playing golf, surfing, and participating in the Young Physicists Program at UC San Diego. With her eye on the future, Madalyn is destined for success! ¢

FOUR MILITARY SPOUSES WIN COMPETITIVE COOKING SHOW
J
essica Saddler, Leah Jakosalem, Terri Alexander, and Traci Maloney have a lot in common – all are moms, military spouses, and talented cooks. The four joined forces on The F Word, a new competitive cooking show hosted by Gordon Ramsey. “Traci, Terri, Jessica, and I had a mindset from day one,” Leah explained. “We were strongly determined and motivated and just gave all we’ve got and went for it! Perk? It was witnessed on national TV!” Under the team name The Military Wives Club (MWC), the four not only won the episode competition, they came back to win the season finale and the $100,000 grand prize. The team didn’t all know each other before the show, but they were soon fast friends. “These military spouses are strong and capable

in so many ways and to be able to represent them was an honor and a challenge we took very seriously,” said Jessica. Traci elaborated, “We deal with so much going on and uncertainty at times with our lives and husband’s careers that we can always rely on one another to get through any obstacle that comes our way, and I really hope the audience saw that.” “The experience of working with the MWC is something that I will hold with extreme pride for the rest of my life,” Terri shared. “They are my sisters! Being a military spouse is what brought us together, and our bond will not let us part.” Jessica lives in Poway with her U.S. Marine Corps husband and their two children. Leah, her U.S. Navy husband, and their daughter live in Rancho Bernardo. Terri, her husband, and their three daughters recently moved back to the U.S. Traci, her U.S. Navy husband, and their two children live in Del Sur. ¢

n 2014, husband and wife Darius and Lisa K. Miller opened the doors to Koi Zen Cellars, a craft winery in Carmel Mountain Ranch. Since then, Koi Zen Cellars has become a staple in the local community – a place where people can “sip back and relax” while drinking great wine. “We start with the highest quality grapes from award-winning California vineyards located in Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, Lodi, and Sonoma. Purchasing grapes from all over California gives us a nice variety of wines to offer. We’ve processed 43 tons of fruit so far this year,” revealed Lisa. Darius is the winemaker and specializes in Bordeaux style wines, though according to Lisa, Darius’ blends are also very popular, as are Malbec, Mourvedre, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Koi Zen Cellars wines have received silver and gold medals in regional and state competitions. “Our wine label has won Best of Show in the Orange County Wine Competition, and we received “We start San Diego’s Best Local Winery in the San Diego Union Tribune Readers’ Poll,” related Lisa. with the highest The inspiration for Koi Zen Cellars was born out of Lisa and quality grapes from Darius’ desire to retire into the wine industry. “Darius was in award-winning California corporate America with a high-stress computer career. The name grapes from all over Koi Zen comes from the koi pond Darius built in our backyard years California gives us a ago. We called it our ‘zen place,’” stated Lisa. Koi Zen Cellars carries the products of local businesses in our merchandising, and we have an annual holiday Sip and Gift shopping event on Small Business Saturday with local business vendors,” said Lisa. Koi Zen Cellars recently tripled their existing space and now have a unique 4,000-square-foot venue for private and corporate events. cientific research connecting our diets and disease is rapidly growing, particularly regarding the effects of gluten. “As doctors start to understand that many diseases are associated with food allergies, the number of people that seek gluten-free food is increasing,” said Diana Benedek, Ph.D. She found inspiration in her own health struggles, and the discovery that eliminating gluten was not enough, and she needed to also cut corn and soy from her diet to improve her health. Committed to cutting these foods out of her life, she was now faced with different struggles – finding tasty gluten-free food without corn and soy, as well as avoiding cross-contamination and hidden allergens in restaurants. Her solution: the award-winning 2Good2B Bakery & Café in Encinitas, recently joined by a brand-new Rancho Bernardo location. Today, Diana is feeling great, and her customers love the outcome. They named the event the Samoa Speedway Derby and worked in committees to design an advertising logo and patch, make trophies, plan a “pit stop” concession stand, create the race day agenda, and host an informational workshop teaching participants how to build their derby cars. Fifty-three Girl Scouts participated in the event, ranging in level from Daisies to Cadettes, and were cheered on by family members and each other. First place winners were Olivia Brown from Daisy Troop 2115, Isabella Lindemuth from Brownie Troop 2947, Kayla Wiltbank from Junior Troop 2361, and Callie Huff from Cadette Troop 2043.

COMMUNITY STUFF
Bells of Freedom Serves Military Families
Through its Bells of Freedom program, local nonprofit Dance Hearts kicked off the annual Adopt-a-Marine Family for the Holidays event in October, culminating in The Big Thank You event at Camp Pendleton on Dec. 3. The event serves local military families during the holiday season by connecting them with community sponsors that provide emotional, spiritual, and financial help. The sponsors travel to Camp Pendleton to meet their “adopted” military families, deliver gifts, enjoy a catered lunch, visit from Santa, and a door prize drawing. Founded in 2001, Dance Hearts is dedicated to connecting in-service military men and women to the community they serve through holiday family “adoptions,” emergency support, and transitional housing for displaced women and children. The Bells of Freedom program originated at Camp Pendleton, but is quickly growing chapters in other areas throughout the country. Learn more at www.bellsoffreedom.org.

WCCRB also gathered over 100 participants for a charity golf tournament and silent auction in October, raising $20,000 towards the purchase of a 3D mammography machine. The machine will detect breast cancer cells 41 percent earlier than traditional mammography machines.

Local Scouts Donate to Children’s Hospital
After over a year of planning and hard work, Junior Girl Scouts Anneliese Fiegl, Mia Robles, and Emily Entwistle recently completed their Bronze Award project. They spent the time learning critical business skills, making community connections, identifying a need in the community, and finally, carrying out their plan of donating over 300 wanted items to local children undergoing cancer treatment at Rady Children’s Hospital. “To see what we were able to do for other kids our age and the generosity of others was so humbling,” said one girl. Her fellow scout added, “Everyone was so kind and appreciative of what we did. It was so nice to see our work mean so much!” They began with two or three concepts each, and weighed each plan to decide what project to tackle – based on who could benefit and how they could accomplish their goals. Scheduling, planning, and coordinating was a challenge, as one scout explained, “Getting all three of our schedules together was difficult, but totally worth it every time we met.” All three girls are members of Troop 2856 and fifth grade students at St. Michael’s School. Mia lives in 92129, and Anneliese and Emily live in 92128 – they were grateful for the community support throughout the project. “Rallying a group of people to work together for a common cause was amazing,” shared one of the girls. “We stood in front of our school’s assembly for two weeks asking for support and providing our project’s progress.”
Scripps Hospitals Ranked First in San Diego The combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla were recently ranked No. 1 in the San Diego region, No. 6 in California, and among the best in the nation in eight specialties on the U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals list. The U.S. News rankings recognize the nation’s top 50 out of 4,658 hospitals that excel in treating patients with the most challenging healthcare needs. Scripps La Jolla and Scripps Green hospitals were also designated as high-performing in several other areas and achieved the highest possible score on performance treating nine relatively common adult procedures and conditions. “Ranking No. 1 in San Diego and among the best in the nation is the result of the hard work of our physicians, nurses, and staff who focus every day on always getting better,” said Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO of Scripps Health. “While we are deeply honored by this recognition, it’s really our patients who are the winners because they have access to outstanding healthcare right here at home.”

Q&A HOW DID YOUR VISION FOR ZCODE MAGAZINES BEGIN? I was lucky enough to have a few articles published about me when I played football in high school. It was very exciting. I still have those articles. I wanted to create a local magazine that made people feel good. A magazine that people looked forward to receiving in their mailboxes. A magazine specifically for the neighborhoods that we call home, with colorful photos and a variety of interesting articles. SINCE ITS CONCEPTION IN 2009, IN WHAT WAY HAVE THE MAGAZINES DEVELOPED MOST? Talent! I have been fortunate to work with an incredibly talented group of people that share the ZCode vision. Having people come up to me and tell me how much they enjoy reading the magazine. It never gets old! WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS FOR THE MAGAZINES? Honestly, it’s to keep publishing magazines that are meaningful to the local residents. And if we are able to grow our family of magazines along the way by adding additional communities, then that’s a bonus!

DENTISTRY PROFILE
RESTORING BEAUTIFUL AND HEALTHY SMILES Dr. Susan Hong Offers Patients the Latest Dental Technology in a Warm and Friendly Environment photos courtesy of Dr. Susan Hong
hen Dr. Hong opened her family and cosmetic dentistry practice in Rancho Bernardo, she focused on providing the highest quality dental care in a comfortable and welcoming environment. “I didn’t want it to feel clinical and cold,” explained Dr. Hong. For patients’ comfort, the dental chairs have heat and massage features, and televisions on the ceilings so patients can be distracted during procedures. The practice also offers the option of Sedation or Sleep Dentistry for patients who are especially anxious about visiting the dentist. Dr. Hong places great value on building lifelong relationships with her patients and providing the best possible clinical care based on trust, compassion, and empathy. “I like to focus on the patient as a whole, not just his or her mouth. I want to get to know the person and their story. That’s what I enjoy the most,” she said. “I am also very aware that I need to earn a patient’s trust and I work very hard at respecting their expectations and letting them know that I will do my best to meet their needs.” The practice is dedicated to using the latest in digital technology to diagnose and assess the needs of their patients. This includes: Digital Sensors and Intraoral Cameras that give patients a birds-eye view of their mouths as well as helping detect decay with fluorescent imaging technology; hand-held x-ray (NOMAD) machines that emit significantly less radiation than traditional x-rays; and Laser Technology to help reduce bacteria in the mouths of patients with gum disease.
W
Dr. Hong also emphasizes the importance of understanding medical-dental relationships. “For example, when I see worn teeth and an enlarged tongue,” she explained, “I may recommend a sleep study to screen for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).” Dr. Hong offers more easily adaptable and adjustable oral appliances to treat OSA, as opposed to the traditional Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, which can be uncomfortable and inconvenient for most apnea patients. The practice also provides Invisalign Treatment, Smile Makeovers, TMJ therapy, Laser Teeth Whitening, and Oral Cancer Screening using ViziLite Technology. Ultimately, Dr. Hong and her team aim to create the most effective and comfortable experience possible for each and every one of their patients. “I live in the community so it’s important to me that our team treats all our patients like friends and family.” AT-A-GLANCE Dr. Hong is a native New Yorker and graduate of Name of Business: Dr. Susan Hong the University Family and Cosmetic Dentistry of Pennsylvania Owner: Dr. Susan Hong School of Dental Established: 2015 Medicine. Fired Up Sisters
RECOVERY ORGANIZATION REMEMBERS FIRES 10 YEARS LATER
O
ct. 22 marked the 10th anniversary of the Witch Creek and Guejito Fires, which destroyed 365 homes in Rancho Bernardo – countywide, 1,141 homes total were destroyed. While thousands were devastated, the community also proved its strength as neighbors banded together to support each other. This year, the Fired Up Sisters (FUS) hosted a dinner event in commemoration. FUS was formed by local women as an emotional support group, and quickly began to coordinate recovery efforts and help fill the gaps left by national programs. “The Red Cross had collected over 30 million dollars in a few weeks designated for the Witch Creek fire,” said Janice Strizver. “Our family of four adults received $1,200. I quickly realized we needed to make things happen.” She first became involved with the disaster center in Ramona, then joined FUS. “My sister and I joined Fired Up Sisters because we needed help to deal with the devastation and incredible trauma of losing a home,” shared Joann Kling, whose home burned down while she was
on assignment in Hong Kong. “With FUS, we found a group of very disparate women – women who we would have never met otherwise – yet who all shared the same experience.” Local resident Robin Kaufman experienced the fires as a Rancho Bernardo CERT volunteer, RB Community Council president, and a victim. “I wasn’t expecting my house to burn down as I am located in the middle of Westwood,” she explained, and added that her preparedness training helped her deal with insurance afterwards. “I was more prepared than many others not only with what to take when evacuating, but I also had a video of my entire home, inside and out, that was sent to a friend out of state.” Now, FUS is dedicated to helping other communities affected by disaster. “The importance of preparedness cannot be minimized,” Joann said. “Our current mission is to pay forward the community assistance we received to other natural disaster survivors.” Learn more at www.firedupsisters.com. ¢

WINTER
LIGHTS Enjoy the Sights and Lights this Season in the Best-Decorated Local Neighborhoods by LAINEY KRAL
A
s the weather turns colder, San Diegans pull boxes out of storage and get ready to brighten up the winter season. The tradition of decorating homes with electric lights began taking off in the 1960s as a next step from decorated Christmas trees, and has since spread around the world. Colorful holiday and seasonal decorations can be found in most San Diegan neighborhoods, but some streets stand out for their over-the-top festive displays. Wait until the sun goes down and bring the whole family for a tour of one – or more – of these twinkling destinations.

R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H
Coming Soon – The Ethical Quandary
O
ver the last few years, there has been a surge in the use of “Coming Soon” advertising for homes. The increase can be traced to Zillow’s introduction of a feature by the same name, but has expanded to the common use by real estate agents of sign riders promoting homes “Coming Soon” to the market. It seems like a straightforward idea, but recently, the National Association of Realtors came out with a strong warning about the practice: “A broker’s decision to market a seller’s property as ‘coming soon’ must always be made based on the client’s informed determination of what best serves the client’s interests… failing to disclose the pros and cons of a limited marketing plan such as ‘coming soon’ advertising, can violate state real estate license laws and regulations…” I like the “Coming Soon“ advertising because if people are driving around looking at houses, I want them to know we have one coming on the market and they might want to wait a few days before making an offer on another property. So why is there opposition to a seemingly simple strategy? Well, everything a broker does has to be for the benefit of the seller, not the broker. Here are a couple of the concerns: • It can be seen as restrictive in terms of Fair Housing Laws. • If the home is sold before being exposed to the entire market, the seller is missing the chance for a competitive situation and therefore cannot be confident of getting the highest price.
• The broker or agent can be seen as trying to represent both sides of the transaction – increasing his or her income at the expense of the seller receiving offers from the open marketplace. I believe that the “Coming Soon“ strategy can be beneficial, but needs to be used carefully. While there are definitely stories of abuse, brokerages watch this closely. If an agent has a pattern of representing both sides on homes that never hit the market, the agent and brokerage are at risk of being sued and losing their license. With this in mind, it has always been and will continue to be our policy that if a home is marketed as “Coming Soon,” offers are not considered until the home is on the MLS. It’s the only way to put the sellers’ best interests first. ¢
