FROM THE PUBLISHER VO L . 9, N O. 2 TM

A Decade Already?

I

t all started with a passion for our community. We didn’t know exactly what we were about to get ourselves into, but after months of napkin scratching (often accompanied by a glass of wine or two at one of our favorite local restaurants), the concept of ZCode Magazines was born – starting with the debut of 92127 Magazine. It’s hard to believe that the first issue was delivered to homes 10 years ago this month. To put it in perspective, our oldest daughter was in middle school (now she’s studying for her MBA in college), and our two youngest kiddos – now both in high school – were only four and five years old. Where has the time gone? The concept of our local zip code magazines was simple: publish magazines about the community that people want to read. And that simple concept is still our company mission statement to this very day. People are proud to live, work, and play in their communities, and we are excited to deliver magazines that showcase everything local. Over the past 10 years, we have published 561 issues. That’s more than 30,000 individual magazine pages that have been designed and printed! We’ve had the privilege to spotlight more than 500 families, more than 500 students, thousands of local businesses, and countless other interesting hyper-local stories. By creating bigger-than-life printed editorial features, people are proud to have their stories memorialized and often keep copies of “their” magazine on display for all to see. In fact, ZCode Magazines articles can be found framed and hanging on the walls of local businesses, showcased in the homes of local families, students, and volunteers, and prominently displayed in our local schools. 92128 is your community, and 92128 Magazine is your magazine. Be sure to stay in touch and recommend articles. Derrick Breaux And we love to receive photos! Also, take a moment to thank Publisher and support the local businesses that participate in this magazine. We wouldn’t be able to publish 92128 Magazine without their enthusiastic support. It’s been a great decade! We look forward to serving our local communities for years to come. Thanks for being a reader and supporting 92128 Magazine!

Zoë Salinas (10) Sycamore Ridge 5 Chad and Myra Brother – Kai (12) Bay Club

ho knew that sibling rivalry could result in such a success story? Back when she was just a little girl, Zoë Salinas felt a strong pang of jealously when her older brother, Kai, placed ninth in the world for golfing. Wanting to prove that she could also master the sport, Zoë managed to not only win the California State Championship twice, at ages five and seven, but she also became a runner-up at the IMG World Championship at age six, and eventually won the FCG Callaway World Championship at age eight! Now that she is a 10-year-old fifth grader

at Sycamore Ridge Elementary, Zoë laughed about Kai being the impetus for her golf glory. She admitted, “My brother basically inspired me to play golf because I’ve always wanted to be better than him!” Zoë claimed that she first began playing golf “ever since I could walk,” and became entrenched in golf tournaments by age four. Zoë’s long-term goal is to hopefully attend Stanford University and play on the college golf team. Discussing the appeal of her favorite activity, Zoë proclaimed, “In golf, it doesn’t matter if you are bigger or smaller than someone else, because everyone has an equal chance to compete.” Zoë also learned a valuable mental skill while competing on the green. She revealed, “The most challenging part of golf is staying focused after you hit a bad shot. You just have to let go of the past and focus on the shot in front of you.” Utilizing her newfound self-control has

also resulted in Zoë making strides in her school’s math club. Zoë stated, “My favorite subject is math, probably because my dad is a computer scientist and he taught me the basics at an early age. My mom and dad actually met in a calculus class at Columbia University, so I feel a family connection with math!” When she isn’t working on golf or math, Zoë can be found participating in tennis tournaments, playing the piano, doodling, and enjoying the monkey bars at her school. Zoë also continues to practice her proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, which her father taught her and her brother to speak, read, and write. Zoë has proven that she is able to swing her way to a fantastic future. 

Poinsettias With a Purpose

FUNDRAISER TO SUPPORT NON-OPIOID PAIN MANAGEMENT PROGRAM by LIZ ONUFER

T

his holiday season, Poinsettias With a Purpose will be raising money for the new non-opioid inpatient pain treatment program at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. The Rancho Bernardo Unit of the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary hosts the annual fundraising sale of florist-quality poinsettias. “This is a wonderful opportunity to give back using the same funds that you are planning to spend for holiday decor or gifts. The quality of the plants is amazing, which makes it a win-win, especially for the kids,” said Marcie Sands, RB Unit’s publicity chairwoman. The cutting-edge pain management program is the first of its kind in Southern California. “Pain is a nearly ever-present part of everyday life for at least 20-35 percent of kids and adolescents worldwide. For

many children their chronic pain becomes completely debilitating,” said Anke Reineke, Ph.D., director of the program. The Specialized Hospital Chronic Pain Management Program at Rady Children’s Hospital is working in partnership with New Jersey Children’s Specialized Hospital to offer the program that emphasizes pain management through a whole-person, multidisciplinary approach. Prices for poinsettias range from $16 for a 15 to 17-inch plant up to $54 for a three to four-foot tall plant. Orders are being taken until Nov. 15, and plants arrive on Dec. 2 and 3. Orders can be placed at bit.do/PoinsettiasWithAPurpose or on their Facebook page at Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary-Rancho Bernardo Unit. 

A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // COACH ASHLey ashley breaux / San Diego Force

Soccer has been a part of my life since I was very young, and I knew it would follow me no matter where life takes me. I have played competitively since elementary school, was on my high school varsity team for four years, played in college, and continue to play to this day. The passion I have for this game has never faltered and being an influence on young minds as a coach has only strengthened that passion. I appreciate the close-knit family that Force FC provides its players and coaches alike. All the coaches are willing to help each other out, and players are motivated to learn in a supportive and progressive environment. I strive for my players to be the best they can be and to always provide them with constructive criticism and encouragement. I love watching them grow! I also coach the junior varsity team at Del Norte High School, which allows me the unique opportunity to work with many of the same players year-round. I recently graduated from CSU San Marcos with a biology degree. I’m currently working on my master’s in supply chain management, then plan on going to dental school. In my free time I like to go rock crawling in Big Bear, ride quads in the desert, and spend time with family and friends. You may see me around the local fields supporting my brother and sister, who are following in my footsteps. We are a soccer-loving family!

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Community Thanksgiving Luncheon

Five Rancho Bernardo High School students were recently named 2020 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation: Sanica Chaudhari, Victoria Dinov, Sakina Rashid, Sandy Tran, and Daniel Zeng. Approximately 16,000 students were selected as semifinalists from a pool of over 1.5 million entrants from 21,000 high schools across the country based on their scores on the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Over 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level, where they will be in the running for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. Final selection is based on students’ skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in college programs. Finalists will be notified in February, and winners will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July. The 2020 recipients will join more than 345,000 other distinguished students who have earned the Merit Scholar title in the past 65 years. Learn more at www.nationalmerit.org.

RB Resident Joins Charity Board Rancho Bernardo resident Paul Fitzgerald recently joined the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego (RMHCSD) board of trustees. Fitzgerald is senior manager of strategic sourcing at Qualcomm and also serves on the board for the International Facility Managers Association. He joins RMHCSD along with four other new board members – Steven Bernstein, Brandy Bullen, Jessie Green, and Adrienne Hoehn Sherman. RMHCSD provides a home away from home for families with children being treated at local hospitals. The Ronald McDonald House provides overnight guest rooms, a kitchen, and a children’s play area to help create a comfortable sanctuary during difficult times. “Each of our new trustees bring skills and experience that will be invaluable to expanding and enhancing the impact of our organization,” said Chuck Day, President and CEO of RMHCSD. “They join us during a significant time, as the need for Ronald McDonald House’s services far exceeds our capacity of 56-bedroom suites. Every night, approximately 30 families who need a room must be placed on our waitlist, while accessing our supportive services through our Family Care Center.” Learn more at www.rmhcsd.org.

RB Hall of Fame Nominations The Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for its 2020 inductees. The organization’s mission is to celebrate outstanding local volunteers, dating back to the initial induction of eight honorees in 1974. Last year’s inductees were Don Glover, Debbie Kurth, and Don Schmidt. Honorees are recognized on permanent plaques in the Rancho Bernardo Library and the RB Hall of Fame website. Nomination criteria includes six or more years of volunteer service, including three years in a leadership role, contributing to the Rancho Bernardo community. Nominations are open through Dec. 28. Learn more and find nomination forms at www.rbhalloffame.org or email RB Hall of Fame President Robin Kaufman at rbns1nest@aol.com.

The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation’s (RBCF) Annual Community Thanksgiving Luncheon will take place Friday, Nov. 22 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. The reception and silent auction will open at 11 a.m., and lunch and entertainment will begin at noon. The RBCF has been dedicated to supporting and improving Rancho Bernardo since its founding in 1988. The organization announces grant honorees at the Thanksgiving Luncheon every year – in 2018, more than $80,000 was awarded. The event is a community favorite tradition to kick off the holiday season, and businesses, nonprofit groups, and community leaders have a chance to meet, mingle, and contribute to the cause. Early bird tickets are $50 and available until Nov. 15. Beginning Nov. 16, tickets will be $60. Learn more and find tickets at www.sdfoundation.org/rbthanksgiving or at www.rbcommunityfoundation.org.

Semifinals winners will then present their speeches at the AAUW California state convention in April 2020, with more cash prizes available. This year’s speech topic is, “Are men and women truly equal today, or are the Suffragettes of 1920 still suffering in 2020?” Speeches must be original content and five to six minutes in length. ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CATHOLIC SCHOOL

L

ocated on 10 elevated acres in Scripps Ranch, St. Gregory the Great Catholic School is a K-8 elementary school and preschool community offering a faith-based educational curriculum that seeks to foster Christian values, inspire academic excellence, and encourage global awareness through service to others. At St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, each child is recognized and appreciated for their unique qualities and supported in developing their God-given gifts and talents. All aspects of the school environment are infused with Catholic values. Each day begins with outdoor community prayer, prayers for special intentions, reflection on the Catholic virtue of the week, reflection on special feast days and seasons in the liturgical year, salute to the flag, and patriotic song. Twice a month, the school community celebrates liturgy at the parish church four miles from the St. Gregory campus. Students are involved in liturgy preparation and actively participate at mass in various capacities. The school curriculum incorporates spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and kinesthetic learning experiences through teaching of six core subjects

(religion, language arts, literature, mathematics, social studies, and science), as well as fine arts and physical education. The religion curriculum is aligned with the Diocesan Curriculum Course Content Guidelines, as are all other subjects. “The combination of both Common Core Standards and Diocesan Curriculum Guidelines makes for a challenging academic program with an integrated Catholic identity,” said Principal Maeve O’Connell. Stewardship and service are also integral to the Catholic identity. Students organize, plan, and participate in a wide variety of local and global service opportunities throughout the school year. “Our students are called to be productive citizens who recognize their ability to make a difference in our world today and in the future,” affirmed Principal O’Connell. St. Gregory the Great Catholic School is WCEA/ WASC-accredited. Faculty and staff embrace all learning styles and work to develop instructional strategies to meet each student’s individual needs. Above all, students are inspired to realize their Godgiven potential and embrace a faith-filled future of leadership, stewardship, and lifelong learning. 

THE BISHOP’S SCHOOL

F

rom the border to Oceanside, The Bishop’s School brings together a diverse and thriving student and faculty population. The School was founded in 1909 as a girls’ boarding school when sisters Ellen Browning Scripps and Eliza Virginia Scripps joined Bishop Joseph Horsfall Johnson to create an institution committed to an ideal that still holds true today: School should be an “open door to knowledge.” In 1971, the School merged with the San Miguel School for Boys. Today, Bishop’s serves 800 students in grades 6 through 12. San Diego’s only independent middle and high school affiliated with the Episcopal Church, Bishop’s is an inclusive community where students come from more than 70 schools representing diverse religious, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This school year, 49 percent of students self-identify as people of color and 20 percent receive more than $3 million in financial aid. Chaplain Nicole Simopoulos-Pigato said, “We emphasize compassion for all people, respect for the dignity of every human being, and the calls to love our neighbors as ourselves and to strive for justice and peace in the world.” Bishop’s programs are designed to meet students’ individual needs – both academically and emotionally, as student well-being is the top priority. Academic options, levels and paths are offered to best fit every student’s abilities, interests and potential, ensuring readiness and success in college and beyond. Opportunities extend beyond the classroom, including academic competitions, international travel, a peer support group, affinity groups, guest speakers and a community service program, to name a few. There are 72 different sports teams, 40 performing arts shows per year in dance, theater, and choral and instrumental music, and visual arts possibilities from photography to animation and more. Learning, leading and acting with open hearts and minds, Bishop’s students engage in the classroom, the community, and the world. 

THE GRAUER SCHOOL

S

ituated on a six-acre natural paradise in Encinitas, alive with native plants and animals and a light coastal breeze, The Grauer School campus itself serves as the starting point for its expeditionary learning tradition. Students are encouraged to use the school campus and the world around them, from the nearby San Elijo Lagoon to Kenya, as primary resources for generating curiosity and experiencing authentic learning. Founded in 1991, Grauer focuses on helping students develop their unique voice, discover their passions, and take ownership over their own learning. The school’s founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer, noted, “We have traveled far and wide studying the world’s most inspirational schools and educational movements: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Socratic, free and democratic schooling, expeditionary learning and classical education, from one-room schoolhouses to Peking University. These traditions have provided us with heroes, mentors, and wisdom.” “The Grauer School uses the foundations of these great traditions and movements to infuse all we keep learning and synthesizing,” said Grauer Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs. “The result is a campus of purpose, optimism, and inspiration. We commit to continuing to develop the finest, most engaged, humanitarian independent

school in the world. And even though our focus is not on rankings and test scores, our students are succeeding at their top choice colleges.” Engaging students in six core values – resourcefulness, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, self-advocacy, and accountability – The Grauer School aims to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. The learning curriculum involves field trips, community service activities, art, expeditions, and student-created programs. Grauer is also the region’s only UNESCO affiliate school, with 176 partner schools around the world. Grauer’s expeditionary learning and arts programs are across the curriculum. The school also launched its Environmental Stewardship Pledge this year, dedicating the 2019-2020 school year to promoting ecological sustainability and stewardship in the school community and beyond. The resolution impacts every aspect of the school, from in- and out-ofclass curriculum to school culture and finance. “We know our students are not inheriting the world or climate we inherited,” said Grauer. “We have a moral imperative to prepare them courageously.” As the longest-serving independent school in North County San Diego, The Grauer School fosters nurturing relationships between teachers and students, giving learners 99th percentile levels of connection and engagement so that they are empowered in their education. “In a world that often seems to put standards before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student,” said Abplanalp-Diggs. “Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions, and teens coming of age are finding their unique voices at Grauer.” 

Army and Navy Academy believes that greatness lies in every boy, but first they need to believe in themselves. Every day, instructors listen, challenge, and encourage boys to imagine and accomplish their goals. The Academy knows that when they believe in a boy and nurture his best aspirations, he’ll discover his best self.

A

t Army and Navy Academy (ANA), learning is more than academics. Boys in grades 7 through 12 are encouraged to discover their unique selves and pursue independence and leadership in all that they do. The year-round boarding school environment allows for structure, hierarchy, and order so that each boy can shine brightly as an individual while being part of a collective team. “As young men find out where they shine and gain profound self-awareness, we witness their growth, whether it is igniting a deeper passion for learning, scoring the goal, acquiring a leadership role, forging new friendships, or applying to college,” said Major General Arthur Bartell, ANA President. Leadership is a cornerstone of the Army and Navy Academy experience. Military programs foster camaraderie, a sense of belonging, and many opportunities for service and leadership. Though less than one percent of ANA graduates enter military service, 100 percent of Cadets continue their personal journey prepared for future leadership roles, complimented by a strong sense of independence, responsibility, and moral and ethical values. The core curriculum at ANA is based on the University of California’s entrance requirements, and

the college preparatory curriculum includes Advanced Placement and honors courses. Furthermore, ANA operates as a Gurian Model school, utilizing instructional techniques tailored specifically to how boys’ brains work, learn, and become motivated to reach their full potential. Students are also offered exciting electives such as aviation and computer science, visual and performing arts opportunities, a robust athletics program, a variety of clubs, and supervised weekend trips. Perhaps the brightest highlight of the Academy’s activities is the privately lifeguarded beachfront along the west edge of the Carlsbad campus, where students are encouraged to take advantage of aquatic activities. All students are taught to put ANA’s core values of honor, respect, responsibility, integrity, compassion, and gratitude into action every day. “It is our goal to ensure that Cadets find their voices and uncover their personalities before going out into the world where they will have to endure and overcome all the obstacles that life presents,” said President Bartell. “We encourage Cadets to test themselves, push beyond their comfort zones, and prove that they can be everything they aspire to be.” 

MONTESSORI CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

M

ontessori Child Development Center (MCDC) equips preschool and kindergarten children to create extensive knowledge of their world through exploration and observation. The child-centered environment encourages children to be self-motivated and behave as active participants in their own learning. Students work individually or in small, self-selected groups, where they teach, collaborate, and help each other. Highly qualified teachers observe and offer direction and support while promoting independence, self-direction, and self-discipline, resulting in children who are engaged in learning and eager to advance. Learning at MCDC extends beyond the classroom to the gifts of the natural world. Situated in a large house re-designed for school use, surrounded by trees, vegetable and flower gardens, selected farm animals, and a grassy play area, the Montessori environment gives children the opportunity to grow emotionally, socially, cognitively, and creatively. “I believe young children thrive in an educational environment where they are treated like the unique individuals they are and are guided by teachers who love children and understand their needs,” said Marijane Schafer, Founder and Director of MCDC Poway. “I opened the school in 1978 to provide parents in our community with a quality educational alternative for their children. We have remained intentionally small so that we can maintain a close relationship with the children and their families. As ever, the staff and I are committed to giving every child an opportunity to discover and develop to their potential.” 

o single factor can point to a child’s success or, for that matter, their struggle. Raising children requires a holistic approach. So when kids are struggling – behaviorally, socially, academically – figuring out the underlying causes and pairing that with the right support can be a real challenge. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a drug-free, personalized, integrative approach to help children reach their full potential. “Gaps and holes in development result in gaps and holes in behavior, academics, socialization, and confidence,” owner Jon Pak explained. Using extensive brain research, Brain Balance creates individualized plans to strengthen the brain’s weaker areas, including sensory engagement, core muscle

strength and coordination, eye tracking, auditory processing, academic guidance, and nutritional guidance. “Extensive scientific research demonstrates that the brain is malleable,” Jon said. “Brain Balance has applied this research to develop a program that focuses on improving the foundation of development and brain connectivity rather than masking or coping with symptoms.” Those symptoms can range from lack of focus and meltdowns to lack of confidence and social struggles. They work with children with or without a diagnosis from pre-K to 12th grade who struggle behaviorally, socially, and academically. This includes but is not limited to lack of focus, impulsiveness, tantrums, learning challenges, lack of confidence, and challenging family/social relationships as well as with children diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, processing disorders, Asperger syndrome, high functioning autism (now considered a part of Autism Spectrum Disorder), and others. Jon was inspired to open Brain Balance of San Diego from his own experience. As a father of a child with special needs, Jon witnessed his son’s friends being treated with medication and struggling with the side effects without improvement. Jon opened the doors of Brain Balance to help families who did not know of options other than medication. The program is currently in 31 states and has served over 30,000 children. “Many of our center owners are parents of the children we’ve helped,” Jon shared. “They have personally experienced how Brain Balance has helped their children and wanted to provide that same opportunity to other parents.” Through a personalized combination of in-center sessions, at-home activities, and a nutrition program, the Brain Balance program addresses the individual gaps for each child to improve focus, behavior, social skills, sensory processing, and academics. The true testament to its success comes from the parents. Making friends, focusing in class, and improving self-esteem are only a few of the many successes that Brain Balance of San Diego hopes to share with other struggling children and their family. Jon acknowledged, “If you and your child are struggling and nothing has worked for you, there’s hope.” 

Mindful Moment

F

ollowing a district-wide push by Poway Unified School District (PUSD), RB High has implemented a new “Mindful Moment” at the beginning of each school day. This addition to the RB High school day invites all students and faculty to take a minute at the start of first period to, according to PUSD’s parent letter, “provide an opportunity for students to calm themselves and have a quiet moment to prepare for learning.” The moment lasts one minute, and students are asked to be as quiet as possible in order to maintain a peaceful environment; talking is discouraged, and

students who arrive to class during the Mindful Moment are asked to wait outside until the 60 seconds are up. While students are asked to remain respectful, they are not required to participate in the Mindful Moment. Also, students who do participate are not told how to, nor are they told what to think about. Look around a classroom during the Mindful Moment, and you will find students doing a variety of different things like closing their eyes, staring at the ceiling, or placing their heads on their desks. Personally, I feel most able to calm myself when listening to music,

so if I have headphones with me, I’ll take the opportunity to plug in for a moment. If I don’t, you’d find me with my eyes closed and concentrating on my breathing. Only lasting a minute, it is doubtful the procedure will be a timewaster. Hopefully, the Mindful Moment helps students in mentally preparing for the school day that lies ahead of them. 

Poway’s Bright Pediatric Smiles Helps Kids Start Early for Lifelong Dental Health

id you know that The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends all children visit the dentist by age one, or six months after their first tooth comes in? Dr. Sambath Tiep, known as Dr. Sam, knows that lifelong dental health is a result of starting children young with a pediatric dentist, whose specialized knowledge helps gain the child’s trust and ensures successful, frequent future visits. At Dr. Sam’s new Poway facility, Bright Pediatric Smiles, she’s even introduced a program called Bright Start, where uninsured patients ages two and under receive a free initial exam and cleaning. The program underscores Dr. Sam’s commitment to community and partnering with families every step of the way. Starting by sitting in an open bay of dental chairs where the child can see other patients cooperating and learning about dental care – or in a bright blue or green room for families who want more privacy – Bright Pediatric Smiles is the place! Dr. Sam provides tooth-colored fillings, digital x-rays, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and minimally invasive options. “We go out of our way and take the time to help young patients and their families have positive and enjoyable experiences from the minute they enter our door,” she explained. A patient’s visit to Bright Pediatric Smiles starts with a big smile, and the child can pick their favorite flavor of fluoride and animal (that will make sense once they’re in the chair!), watch movies on the ceiling, and finish the fun with a trip

WEBSITE:

Dr. Sam earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at University of Southern California’s Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, along with multiple honors and accolades: Dean’s List, Charles Goldstein Award, and the Doctors Out to Care Appreciation Award. Her previous decade of service included pediatric offices serving disadvantaged populations, so she continues her connections to the local community through fun dental presentations at local schools, events like RB Alive! and SuperHero Fun Run, charities like Gently Hugged, and working with and supporting other small businesses as a member of the Poway Chamber of Commerce. She is passionate about her work with Give Kids a Smile, which provides free oral health services to millions of underserved children. Bright Pediatric Smiles has built a modern, bright, and open practice to help create a caring and comfortable environment for kids of all ages, and Dr. Sam is committed to providing honest, quality dental care at a place where parents feel secure in their choice of a dental home for their children. 
