The Big 4-0
F
Derrick Breaux Publisher
or as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be older. When I was a child, I wanted to be a teenager. When I was a teenager, I wanted to be an adult. In college, I couldn’t wait to start my career. At nineteen, like most people, I just wanted to reach the legal drinking age. As each year passed, I felt like I was inching closer and closer to something – perhaps some type of goal or milestone? After all, these markers tend to be big deals in all of our lives. We often see them as the ‘end’ of distinct categories. The end of our teenage years... The end of high school... The end of college... The end of our twenties... I’ll take it even further. Have I simply been on course to reach middle age? Goodness, did I really just say that? After spending a few minutes on Google, I’ve concluded that most people classify middle age as 45 to 65 years of age. Apparently this is a relatively new frame of mind because until recently, it was generally thought that 40 to 60 years made up the bracket’s classification. I assume that it wouldn’t be difficult to figure out what age group initiated the sudden five year shift. Turning the big 4-0 was actually a pretty cool experience. My adorable wife worked hard to put together an incredible 40th birthday party. I was humbled by the whole experience – surrounded by dear friends, family members, acquaintances and colleagues spanning multiple decades of memories. The most common question that people have been asking me is how it felt turning 40. The honest truth is that it’s great. For the first time that I can remember, I feel like I am actually at the beginning of something. I’m motivated and inspired. I’m right where I want to be – at the exact age that I want to be at. Truth be told, throughout my thirties I often thought of reaching forty. I’m there and it’s going to be a fantastic decade! I’m no longer looking too far into the future. In fact, I’m doing just the opposite. Spending time with my family and enjoying watching my kids grow into their pre-teen years and young adulthood is an amazing thing. If only there was a way that I could convince them that there is no rush to get older and move into the next category of their lives – but that’s a topic for a different publisher’s note. Oh, and by the way, I subscribe to the new way of thinking – the one that says middle age is classified as 45 to 65 years old. A special thank you to Google for clarifying that and giving me a five year cushion. Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

s it has band members ranging in age from 17 to 14, Open For Business (OFB) would logically be inexperienced and new to the rock concert game. Nope. With performances at places like the House of Blues, Fiesta Del Sol, PQ Fiesta, numerous street fairs throughout San Diego, and a repeat gig at the San Diego Fair for the past three years, these band members are practically old pros. Brady Kerr and younger sister Jessie took music lessons for four years before stepping back to look at all of the material they had accumulated with nowhere to perform it, and so they formed
Open For Business. Brady is lead guitar, while Jessie plays five string bass. The rest of the band features Mason Mercer on lead vocals, Matthew Siemer on drums, and new member Ross Martin on rhythm guitar. “To bring extra flare to the music,” he told us. Of all the places they have performed, they really like playing for the community and people they know, and “going to all the cool places in San Diego,” Jessie affirmed. The Fair is a definite favorite.” There’s always a large crowd of people, the stage is impressive, the sound system is the best, and we really get to rock out,” Brady said. It doesn’t hurt that

“after our performance we get to spend the day at the Fair.” Their inspirations are varied. Matthew likes bands like the Foo Fighters, Queen and The Eagles, while Brady is most influenced by Brian Setzer. Mason likes Imagine Dragons, Ross appreciates Alter Bridge and Jessie follows Queen, Sublime and The Black Keys. Their genres vary as well, with Matthew and both Kerrs leaning toward alternative and classic rock, Mason most enjoying alternative rock/pop, while new member Ross has a thirst for heavy metal. OFB members also vary in their interests for the future. Jessica
aspires to be a veterinarian and Brady wants to be in a helping profession, maybe a firefighter or environmental preservationist. Mason, Ross and Matthew all have dreams of performing in their future. “One of my dreams is to play drums professionally as an adult,” shared Matthew, while Mason chimed in with, “I want to work in the entertainment business, as I love performing.” Whatever their differing interests for the future, Open For Business agrees on one important thing in the present. The best thing about being in the band is playing and performing with friends. ¢

Do you have this type of expertise? ♦ Let’s not forget the annual Fiesta. We’re always looking for new and exciting additions to this annual event and we need a lot of help. Undertaking these and many other programs takes committed volunteers and money. Thanks to the hard work of our Town Council President and the enormous support of the San Diego County Credit Union, our community banner program has been revived. The renewed success of this program has enabled the Town Council to consider new programs for which there has never been room in the budget before. It’s a good time to bring new ideas to the table. (That means yours!) We’ve also been very pleased to continue our two and a half year old Community Partners program with many renewals and brand new partners. We’re raising our profile in the community and you’ve noticed. The more support we receive, the more we can do for PQ! Does any of this sound like it might be right up your alley? During the 2007 wildfires, our neighborhood received a reverse 911 call to evacuate. While we were all busy loading our belongings into the car, I looked out the window and saw Evalyn going door-to-door making sure everybody got the word. This is so typical of Evalyn. sk 13-year-old Rey Simon about kumite and kata and the answer will not involve the latest anime comic characters. The names Rey knows so well are from the ancient Japanese form of karate. This past year, Rey traveled across the world to train in his discipline, jumping from Ohio and South Carolina to a dojo in Japan and the Pan American Karate Championships in Medellin, Columbia. Rey’s travel and training were well rewarded; in addition to his first and second places in national championships, Rey earned second place in sparring (kumite) and third place in forms (kata) at the Pan American Karate Championships. While travel is a constant in his life, Rey enjoys being at home in 92129, noting its proximity to school, shopping, and his friends. It was the latter that was the catalyst for his study of karate. “I got involved in this because I saw some of my

Today, Rey continues to pursue the discipline “because it’s good physical and self defense training and I have a lot of friends on the team.” Rey’s discipline extends into the classroom as well at Mesa Verde Middle School, where he enjoys academics and appreciates the friendly teachers. He often surprises people with his enrollment in geometry as an 8th grader, and he loves astronomy. “It’s mindblowing how the universe works. 92129 RESIDENT NAMED PRESIDENT OF STUDENT HONORS SOCIETY
PQ
native Rozhon Badiozamani was like every other senior student at Westview High School. She applied to colleges and eagerly awaited those letters, but was faced with disappointment at not being accepted into her choices. Most students would despair, but Rozhon kept her head up and pursued a different avenue of higher education. “I was rejected from all of the undergraduate colleges I applied to and ended up at Miramar [College] . . . but I am sure that I would be lost if I hadn’t started my college career there,” said Rozhon. Rozhon credits her success to Miramar College’s Freshman Year Experience Program, through which she discovered the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. “I went to the first meeting and thought everyone was nice and smart and that it would be a great fit for me, and that was it. I went to the next meeting and when the question was asked of who would run for president, I just raised my hand.” Rozhon has taken to her new position as president with enthusiasm, encouraging members to take an active role in their education and community service. Rozhon’s most recent project was a Counselor Appreciation Day, in which she and other members brought goody bags for the counselors at Miramar College. “We all admire their hard work, especially when the lines are out the door and they are each seeing around 100 students per day.” Setting her sights on the future, she hopes to become a
pediatrician or a foreign policy agent to establish hospitals in third world countries. “The way I see it,” said Rozhon, “I have this beautiful opportunity to afford school, to think on my own, to walk on two legs, to work with two hands and to see with two eyes. Some people are not as lucky, and if I don’t use this golden opportunity to do something worthwhile and help those who are less fortunate, then I might as well be poor, paralyzed, and blind.” ¢

O
ne could say that the Donadio family has their fingertips on the pulse of San Diego’s radio broadcasting community. Jerry is the general sales manager for two local talk radio stations – The Mighty 1090 (also known as the home of the Padres) and ESPN 1700-AM, and Doris is the traffic manager for CBS Radio’s KyXy 96.5 FM. “Doris schedules radio commercials and I manage a team that sells radio advertising and sports sponsorships,” explained Jerry. He and Doris, who are self-proclaimed
practical jokers, met while working together at Cox Cable and appeared on a 1996 episode of The Newlywed Game. When Doris and Jerry are not at their respective radio jobs, they can often be found out and about in 92129. They have lived in the Park Village area since 2002 and absolutely love it. “Rancho Peñasquitos is friendly and fun, with a great sense of community. Not only are there great parks and canyons, but there are also awardwinning schools,” said Jerry. Finding great schools and a familyfriendly location to raise their children was extremely important to the couple as they looked for a community to call home. The Donadio children are very active and keep Doris and Jerry busy with sports and activities. Gianna, who is a freshman at Westview High School, is a member of the high school soccer team and plans to play lacrosse as well. Antonio, a fifth grader at Park Village Elementary School, plays flag football, loves his Xbox and owns a pet Bearded Dragon named Niko. As a family, the Donadios enjoy taking family trips to Hawaii, cooking Italian and Mexican meals, hiking in the Peñasquitos Preserve and watching SDSU football and basketball games. Giving back to the community is also a big part of life in the Donadio household. Doris has volunteered at Park Village Elementary School, both in the classroom and on PTA, and Jerry is a former board member of Make-A-Wish Foundation San Diego. “I also volunteered with Big Brothers San Diego. I started in 1989. My ‘little brother’ is now 34 years old and we still keep in touch,” revealed Jerry. The family’s latest volunteer endeavor was helping build a house in Mexico in November 2013 with the organization Homes for Hope. ¢

he PQ Skate Park reopened this past March, and the community was eager to see the new developments. These renovations have been almost five years in the making, and as soon as the old wooden ramps were removed, work began to replace them with up-to-date models. “The San Diego Park and Recreation Department is very excited for the opening of the skate park, so skaters can use the new ramps and rails. There will be something new for all levels of skaters,” said Mary Ngai, Area Manager II for Canyonside and Hilltop Recreation Centers. “We expect the attendance to increase greatly with skaters wanting to use the new amenities. The construction of the new ramps and rails will be a great addition to the skate park.” A grand opening

Mary added, “There will be skateboard classes offered when the park reopens and camps in the summer.” Visit the Canyonside Recreation Center to keep up to date on sign-ups for these new skateboarding classes. Local Police Get Equipped with AEDs
San Diego City Councilman Mark Kersey announced that he will fund the placement of five Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at the San Diego Police Department’s (SDPD) Northeastern Division. Councilman Kersey also committed to funding five AEDs each year until every police vehicle and patrol car in the division is equipped with an AED. This would make it the first SDPD division to be fully equipped with this life-saving technology. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, so it makes sense to have our first responders, like police officers, equipped with a tool that is proven to save lives,” said Councilman Kersey.

The group needs the public’s help with financial donations and non-perishable donations, such as bicycle tubes, granola bars, trail mix, and water bottles. “Without the volunteers that help with safety equipment, meals, and camping gear, RAC would not be possible,” said Gary Rossi, a coordinator and leader for RAC. For more information, contact Jesse Pazdernik, Sports and Teens Director, at 858484-8788 or visit www.rancho.ymca.org.
Supervisors Support “Think Local First”

Attendees will also have an opportunity to join the volleyball players’ team for Great Strides Walk for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on May 18. Donate ahead of time by registering at www.fightcf.cff.org/goto/westview. For questions contact Jody Cates at jodylcates@mac.com.

“In over ten years of purchasing branded merchandise for various businesses, I have found Viva Merch to be, by far, the easiest to work with, most professional, and most timely company that I have worked with. The quality of the designs and the finished product have been second to none. The entire team works with me to make sure that I am happy with the final results in a true collaborative fashion. They have a way of taking a crazy idea that I have floating around in my head and bringing it to life, all the while making it better through their own individual contributions. I am absolutely confident that I sell significantly more merchandise as a result of our business relationship.”

E
very year in May, thousands of residents flock to Black Mountain Rd. for the Annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos. From rides and performances, to great food and sweet desserts, the Fiesta is a great way to spend a Sunday. Even us at 92129 Magazine will be there! Adults and children alike can easily spend hours perusing the vendors and entertainment along the street. Now in it’s nineteenth year, the Fiesta is bigger and better than ever. Read along as the PQ Town Council provides a wealth of information about the people and businesses that keep the Fiesta striving and be sure to “Dream Big and Think Local” on May 4.

a message from PQ Fiesta 2014 Chair,
Jerry Bouck
ATTENTION: The fabulous “PQ FIESTA” is one month away! Organized by the PQ Town Council along with our indispensable professional planner, Rozanna Zane of Affairz Event Consulting (www.affairz-consulting.com), the Fiesta is the premier event for the Peñasquitos Town Council and local residents. Consider almost two decades of annual fun and festivities right in the center of our vibrant PQ community. Always held on the first Sunday in May, and always free to all attendees, the Fiesta de los Peñasquitos achieves its nineteenth year in 2014. So mark your calendars for May 4 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and join your friends and nearly 15,000 other Peñasquitosians in celebrating the longest running community tradition in Rancho Peñasquitos. (Well, okay, maybe Christmas Card Lane has a little more tenure.) This year promises to be a memorable one: crowds listening to great musical entertainment (yes, four stages again this year), food booths of excellent and diverse variety, rides galore, dancing troupes, community nonprofit groups, local businesses manning their booths, a full slate of political dignitary booths (this year is an election year), kids enjoying animal balloons, bouncy rides, face painting... and on and on and on. AND: The recent ‘enhancements’ for the street fair remain in place this year. The annual 5k Fun Run, celebrating its seventh year, will be held on Saturday, May 3 (visit www.pq5kfunrun.org or see article within). Over 500 aerobic (or not) contestants are expected to participate this year and be rewarded with a free breakfast at the finish line for their efforts. After its debut last year, the Fiesta will be honored again to host our car show friends from La Familia. This year, Fiesta attendees can expect to see upwards of seventy-five beautifully restored classic vehicles lining the north end of Black Mountain Road. The car show is sure to repeat as another crowd favorite. And don’t forget while you’re enjoying those classic beauties to cast a ballot for your personal favorite. THEME: As odd as it sounds, one of the challenges that the Town Council’s Fiesta Committee faces each year is the selection of an appropriate theme. If we have six to eight Town Council members on the Fiesta Committee, we’ll end up with an equal number (or more) of suggestions. Sometimes it seems we ramble and wring our hands for weeks trying to get just the right two or three words that poetically capture the essence of Peñasquitos in a themed expression. It is with honor that we proclaim the 2014 Fiesta theme: DREAM BIG, THINK LOCAL. The theme is a reflection and in complete harmony with the dozens of colorful banners that are prominently displayed on street poles throughout our community. The Town Council Fiesta Committee sincerely thanks PQ residents and organizations for supporting our annual community event and hopes to see many familiar faces there.

ELECTIONS
O
ne of the many exciting things going on at the Town Council’s booth will be the annual election of Town Council representatives.
The Town Council is made up of elected and appointed volunteers from eight districts laid out to coincide with the elementary school boundaries in PQ. Every year there is at least one elected position open in every district. The benefit of being elected, rather than appointed, is that elected members may run for a position on the Executive Board, which can have a significant impact on how the candidate can serve our community. The Council is always looking for new, energetic members, so if you’d like to get your name on the ballot, fill out a candidate application online at www.rpcouncil.com/join. The deadline is April 20. Participating in our community is the basis for all positive growth. Whether it is by voting or by running, our community needs to hear from you! See you at the Fiesta 2014.

T
he Rancho de los Peñasquitos Town Council is made up of volunteers whose mission is to serve, represent, and promote the activities and interests of all Rancho Peñasquitos residents. In order to do this, the Council supports local individuals and organizations through community service grants and scholarships and hosts community-wide events such as their biggest fundraiser of the year, the Annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos. One hundred percent of your tax deductible donation will go toward grants, scholarships, and community events.

The proceeds from the Fiesta provide funds so that the Council can offer community service grant opportunities for individuals, businesses, or other entities interested in supporting and furthering the goals and objectives of the Council. We encourage all Rancho Peñasquitos residents to donate their time and talents by volunteering in one of the many community outreach programs the Town Council operates. Through participation in these programs, Rancho Peñasquitos residents find opportunities to network with local government officials, business partners, and other community members. COMMUNITY AWARDS
E
ach year the Town Council is proud to recognize the community service contributions of twelve local students, one adult volunteer, and one business or organization. Twelve outstanding students — one from each of our twelve PQ public schools — are recognized for their community service efforts with Youth Community Service Awards. Winners from 5th and 8th grade are nominated by their schools, and the qualifications and selection processes vary by school. At the high school level, graduating seniors can apply for this $500 scholarship directly, rather than through a school nomination process. For more information, go to www.rpcouncil.com/ycsascholarshipapp. Additionally, the Town Council is accepting nominations until April 21 for the Volunteer of the Year award and the Business/Organization of the Year award. Nominations must be submitted via online nomination at www.rpcouncil.com/fiesta2014. The name of the Volunteer of the Year will be added to the engraved plaque installed at Hilltop Park and the Business of the Year will be featured for a full year on the Town Council web site. If you know a person, organization, or business that has worked hard to make a positive impact in our community, submit your nomination today! Winners of all these community awards will be invited to participate in a Fiesta ceremony at which they will be publicly recognized by the community, the Town Council, and our local elected officials.
PQ5K
W
hat happens when a former Olympian joins a couple of enthusiastic marathoners with the common goal of creating a unifying event for their community? Happily for Peñasquitos residents, the answer is a free, family-friendly fun run: the PQ5K Community Fun Run/Walk, part of the weekend of fun we know as the Fiesta de los Peñasquitos. Our resident Olympian RaNae Seaman participated in the 1964 and 1968 summer games as a javelin thrower. She went on to teach and coach, eventually retiring as the Athletic Director at Madison High School. RaNae has a love of sports and a desire to help people achieve their best. So when she began discussing the possibility of a community fun run with avid runners Ken and Trish Wolsey, it was only natural that their plans became reality in 2008. Fast forward to 2014. As part of the Fiesta de los Peñasquitos weekend, the PQ5K Fun Run/Walk will take place at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 3. For the third year, our Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council is partnering with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to offer a fabulous, free, fitness-inspired activity. Participation has increased dramatically, from less than 200 in 2008 to around 800 in 2013. The idea is simple: on the Saturday morning before the street fair, runners, walkers and strollers gather in the LDS church parking lot at 12835 Black Mountain Rd. Participants register and receive a racing bib, wait to be escorted across the busy street to a running path, then make their way to another church parking lot at 14191 Camino Del Sur. There, a pancake breakfast, complete with bacon and fresh orange juice waits for hungry runners. Children under 12 receive a medal for making it 3.1 miles to the finish. If our local firefighters are not too busy that morning, they will bring a truck for the kids to tour. And it is all free! In keeping with the Fiesta theme, RaNae, Ken, and Trish are thinking big. They anticipate as many as 1,000 runners this year. So Trish has been busy squeezing and freezing fresh orange juice for the event. Ken is organizing route support and printing race bibs. RaNae is wondering how much bacon to buy (96 pounds last year!). Other members of the LDS church are helping with logistics, and the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council is giving their support to make certain the Fun Run is a great experience for the community at large. All the rest of us need to do is think local. For more information on the PQ5K and to pre-register, visit their web site at www.pq5kfunrun.org.
FIESTA SPONSORS
E
ach year, the Town Council offers sponsorship opportunities for local businesses, organizations, and residents for our Fiesta. By choosing to sponsor the Fiesta, these exemplary organizations have shown their commitment to our community, since profits made from the Fiesta return directly to the community in the form of community grants, local events, and improvements in our community. This year, the Town Council would like to highlight Slow Lane Familia as our Neighborhood Sponsor, Eye Level Learning Center of Rancho Peñasquitos as the Kid Zone Sponsor, and San Diego County Credit Union as our Premier Sponsor.
After the success Slow Lane Familia had with their vintage car show in last year’s Fiesta, they have decided to become a Neighborhood Sponsor for this year’s Fiesta. Slow Lane Familia is a local, nonprofit, car club whose members own and show American made cars dating back to 1966. The proceeds from the car show entry fee will go directly to the community in the form of grants to deserving local organizations. Come check out the cars and cast a vote for the crowd favorite trophy. This year, the Council is pleased to work with Eye Level, a premier supplemental education center that will open in the Towne Center shopping center shortly after our Fiesta, as the Kid Zone Sponsor. Our youngest residents can enjoy free crafts and entertainment at the Kid Zone. Eye Level strives to help students build self-confidence and an interest in learning, while developing a child’s critical thinking abilities and analytical skills. To learn more, go to www.eyelevelranchopenasquitos.com. The premier sponsor of the fiesta this year is San Diego County Credit Union. They have generously combined two Fiesta sponsor levels, Main Stage and Banner, to strengthen their continuing dedication to our community. Local branch manager Jeff Barger welcomes all residents to come into the PQ branch location in the Towne Center Shopping Plaza to learn how SDCCU can serve you. Is your organization interested in showing its support for our community through being a Fiesta Sponsor? It’s not too late. There are still a few sponsorship opportunities available – please visit the Fiesta website or call Rozanna Zane to lock it in. ¢

or all you golf enthusiasts out there, GolfTEC San Diego may be just the place for you to improve your game. “GolfTEC has a proven track record with a 95% success rate, and nationwide we give 25% of all private lessons taught. No one else can say that!” exclaimed owner of the San Diego franchise, Suzanne LaTour. From custom club fittings, to virtual playing lessons, to a patented technology that compares your swing to those of professional players, GolfTEC offers not only a lesson in golf, but an experience, as well. “GolfTEC itself was started in Denver, in 1995, by co-founders and PGA Professionals Joe Assell and Mike Clinton,” stated LaTour. “Creating a consistent, well-documented golf instruction approach was at the heart of their new-to-the-world business concept. They set out to revolutionize the golf improvement industry and many would agree they’ve done just that.” While Suzanne – who is in her twenty-first year in the financial services industry – was researching various franchises to diversify for future retirement plans, she signed up to take lessons at GolfTEC. “Three lessons into my plan, I overheard that the store was for sale and called Denver to get more information,” she said. “I thought ‘Perfect. I love golf – I should buy this,’ and I ended up buying the entire San Diego Region with a plan to build out four Centers!”

SPRINGTIME WONDERLAND Blooms Abound at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad
D
by JESSICA WOODS
id you know that ranunculus is Latin for “little frog”? You can “leap” into the new spring by visiting the largest collection of ranunculus flowers in San Diego: The Flower Fields at Carlsbad, a place that is very near and dear to the hearts of many San Diegans. March 1 marks the reopening of the fields, with a rolling hill of ranunculus blooms in every vibrant color you can imagine. There’s even a side that was arranged in red, white, and blue in the shape of the American flag. The time to see these blossoms is now, as the fields will only be open until Mother’s Day on May 11, wherein the flowers will be harvested for sale. There’s so much to do at the fields! Enjoy an antique tractor and wagon ride through the fields, or peruse the works of art made entirely of flowers in the Artist Gardens. The Sweet Pea Maze is a family delight, and you can take your chances at striking it rich at the Carlsbad Mining Company. Visit www.theflowerfields.com for more information. And to future brides, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad during season is the perfect time for a wedding, with the fields as a backdrop, and a real barn on the property for a truly unique reception. So, hop on over to The Flower Fields today, and get a taste of the famed ranunculus’ beauty.
How Did The Flower Fields Begin? The history of the fields stretches back nearly 100 years. Luther Gage, an early settler in the 1920s, shared a ranunculus farm with Frank Frazee. As the 1950s rolled around, after fires and moving the farm, Frank’s son, Edwin, took up the mantle of his father’s trade, breeding “superior ranunculus bulbs” with a “double” petal structure. Edwin then expanded his farms to Carlsbad, where the flowers could bloom best in the mild climate. By 1993, Edwin retired, and Paul Ecke Jr. looked to create a tourist destination so that the fields could survive financially. Thus, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch was born, where people could not only come and enjoy the blooms at springtime, but also purchase the flowers.
Flower viewing isn’t the only thing you can do at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad! MARCH 30: Kid’s Day – Arts and crafts, face painting, and a visit from Ronald McDonald!
APRIL 20: Zydeco Day – The Bayou Brothers will be stopping by with plenty of Louisiana- inspired accordion music to create a memorable Easter.
APRIL 6: Canon Photography Workshop – Enjoy a free Macro Photography workshop, with special Cannon equipment to take out to the field.
APRIL 26: Blues Day – An afternoon of blues entertainment awaits you, featuring local musicians.
APRIL 6: Bluegrass Day – A day filled with bluegrass music and an arts and crafts celebration. APRIL 13: Red Hat Ladies’ Day and Style Show – The Flower Fields Red Hatters will present a Ladies Day and Style fashion show.

S
port Clips Haircuts was founded in 1993 with a mission to create a fun, relaxing championship haircut experience for boys and men. Since that time, the popular franchise has grown significantly, becoming a niche between family-style haircutters and full-service salons. Due to its quick success, the chain has been dubbed the “fastest growing brand in the hair care industry.” Terry Klinker, owner of the Sport Clips 4S Ranch location, elaborated on its success: “Sport Clips has become well entrenched in Southern California in the last seven years. There are currently seventeen locations in San Diego County, and that will grow to thirty stores in the next few years!” It was the year 2006, shortly after Terry had retired from his position as Director of Business Development and Director of Sales for a leading biotech firm, when he and his wife, Sue, decided to embark on a unique business venture: opening their first Sport Clips Haircuts store. Today, the businesssavvy couple own four Sport Clips stores across San Diego; and they are especially proud of the 4S Ranch location. “All the hair stylists had experience in the salon industry before starting their new career,” shared Terry.

The Store Manager, Christine Anderson, won the Southern California Manager of the Year for 2013, and other members of the 4S Ranch team have won multiple awards including, client retention, services, and kid’s cuts. So what can one expect from the Sport Clips experience? “The store is decorated in a ‘man cave’ fashion, with big screen TVs in the lobby and on the cutting floor,” described Terry. “The locker room atmosphere is enhanced with the baseball park murals

and other sports paraphernalia in the store.” But although the store – which is open every day and does not take appointments - attracts patrons for its fun, sports-themed environment, its services shouldn’t be overlooked. “Sport Clips Haircuts provides a high-end haircut experience for men and boys at a competitive price,” stated Terry. “Our hair stylists have many years of experience in the salon industry, and Sport Clips offers additional training on hair cutting techniques, using clippers, scissors, razors, and other professional tools to offer our clients the best, modern styles, as well as traditional styles and professional fades.” All clients can expect to receive the store’s signature MVP haircut experience, complete with a massaging shampoo, a classic hot towel treatment, and a neck and shoulder massage. “[We offer] some relaxing services to help relieve the stress of today’s fast-paced society,” Terry added. “Our stylists are passionate about men’s styles and have elected to step away from the full service salons to focus on their haircutting craft.” ¢

While his duties vary greatly, Greg’s favorite part of his monthly patrols is visiting with elderly citizens who live alone. Through the RSVP, volunteers over the age of 50 are recruited to help the San Diego Police Department with some of the more peaceful patrol duties, such as issuing disabled parking citations, patrolling school areas, and providing home checks on the elderly and housebound. The patrol’s focus is safety and security, allowing police officers more time to do what they do best – protect. Greg, like all RSVP volunteers, serves three patrol days each month and attends a monthly meeting. His training was provided entirely by RSVP, including time at the Police Academy. His graduation earned him the uniform and badge he wears on patrol. Protecting and serving his long time community is important to Greg. He and his wife, Carolyn, have raised three children in the Sunset Hills area of Rancho Peñasquitos, twins Kevin and Keith, and daughter, Casey. All three children were highly involved in sports and graduated from Mt. Carmel High School. The great schools and neighborhood are the reasons Greg and Carolyn still love it today. Currently, RSVP is in “dire need of good citizens to help patrol the neighborhoods,” Greg stated. Interested volunteers are invited to join for a “ride along” to learn about the experience. And beyond more senior patrollers, contributions of time or money would be greatly appreciated “to upgrade some of our equipment,” Greg added. One of the most important fundraisers of the year is the upcoming PQ Fiesta. When not patrolling, Greg can be found doing “anything outside.” He especially enjoys time at the local parks and trails. And Greg admitted, “I still love to rip some waves, both as a long boarder and a SUP boarder.” ¢

Conserve, Conserve, Conserve! By SUPERVISOR DAVE ROBERTS
The
vote by the San Diego County Water Authority’s Board of Directors in February was unanimous and the message was clear: conserve, conserve, conserve. Drought conditions in parts of California are as bad as they have been in a century. As the county’s representative to the Water Authority, I joined my colleagues from twenty-four member agencies in support of furthering conservation. The directors’ vote initiated the agency’s Water Shortage and Drought Response Plan to conserve as much stored water as possible so it can be made available where it is needed most. Last activated in 2007, the plan is designed to preserve the water held in storage and to minimize the impacts of supply challenges. The board also approved alerting all of its member agencies that the region is at Level 1 Drought Watch. That means that water district officials must identify specific actions necessary for their communities, such as repairing leaks quickly, limiting irrigation to the evening and early-morning hours and expanding use of recycled and non-potable water. As we lay plans to conserve, we can feel good about our track

record. San Diego County has reduced its water consumption by 27% since 2007, even though our population has increased. The Water Authority, to its credit, has greatly expanded the county’s storage capacity and has made capital investments and negotiated agreements to diversify the sources of our water portfolio. Since January, when I took over as the county’s water board representative, I have toured the Colorado River Aqueduct and the Sacramento/San Joaquin Bay Delta. Those trips drove home an important point: that most of the water we consume travels great distances, and at great cost, to reach us. And when water flows from our faucets, it’s no accident. To maintain our quality of life for our homes, businesses and farms, we must continue to diversify our supplies and to expand water recycling and reuse. And of course, conservation is key. To learn more about how to conserve water visit the Water Authority’s website at www.sdcwa.org. ¢ Dave Roberts represents the Third District on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

Tips: Everyday Ways
to Protect Wildlife
by TORI MORRISON | Photos by Spark Photography and Project Wildlife Care Center Staff
P
roject Wildlife, a nonprofit organization, serves as the primary resource for animal rehabilitation and conservation education in San Diego County. The organization cares for sick, injured, and abandoned wildlife throughout the County and then ensures that healthy animals are released back to the wild. Educating the public about wildlife interactions is another part of their mission, as they can have a major positive impact on the lives of wild animals.
Sick, Injured or Orphaned The first thing to remember is that wildlife generally view humans as a threat. So even if you are trying to help, too much handling or commotion can lead to undue stress on an animal. Watch to be sure the animal really is sick, injured, or orphaned and then act. When assisting the animal, stay calm. Bring the animal to a licensed rehabilitation center. If you are handling the animal yourself, wear gloves or use a towel and place the animal in a container with air holes.
frequented by coyotes. Also, ensuring trash can lids are tight, not leaving pet food outside and sealing access to garages or crawl spaces will help avoid unwanted wild animal visitors. If these efforts fail to keep wildlife out of your home or backyard, there are also some simple and safe deterrents you can try. These include using chili powder on plants, and installing motion-sensitive lights. Humane wildlife extraction is also an option. Humane exclusion encourages wild animals to leave and not to return without the use of pesticides.
Feeding Animals Avoid feeding wild animals as that teaches them to associate humans with a food source. This act causes wildlife to become too tame and lose their self-protecting fear of people.
Resident Wildlife
If you find an injured or abandoned animal, do not attempt to keep the animal yourself. Its best chance for survival is to get it to a licensed rehab facility like Project Wildlife as soon as possible.
Some wild animals live close to residential areas and may enter yards in search of food or water. Pets should never be left in unattended areas

DYNAMO Savannah Benedict Amasses Major Accolades for her Aquatic Skills by LINDA FRABL | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

his 17-year-old Park Village resident may have only been playing water polo for the past four years, but Savannah Benedict, a senior at Westview High School, has already amassed major accolades for her aquatic skills. For four years in a row now she has achieved junior Olympian status in water polo competitions. This year, Savannah has helped guide her team to the Division 2 CIF Championship game for the first time in school history. With her current 3.67 GPA, Savannah has twice earned the “USA Water Polo Academic All American” title, and has been on the Union-Tribune San Diego All-Academic Team for the past two years. She is the co-captain for her varsity water polo team, and Savannah also plays for the San Diego Shores Water Polo Club. This fall she will attend California Lutheran University (CLU), where she will play on the Women’s Water Polo team. What is most impressive about all of this is that Savannah originally began playing water polo as a freshman because of a lack of faith in her abilities in another popular sport. She explained, “I had played PQ recreational softball for three years, and I wasn’t sure if I could compete for the high school team with so many good athletes and all-stars that PQ Girls Softball creates, so I decided to try out for water polo instead. I instantly loved the sport, and it didn’t hurt that I had a pretty good shooting arm already developed from playing softball.” That Savannah Benedict (17) freshman year, Savannah was voted most valuable player for her Westview High School high school water polo team. 12 Now that she is pondering her upcoming graduation and Matt and Joyce Benedict the reality of leaving her teammates, Savannah admitted, “I am Sierra (14) sad to be departing from such a tight-knit group of girls, but I am excited to start a new adventure with my college team.” Thinking back on her high school memories, Savannah stated that her favorite class has been Civics and Economics, because she “learned valuable information that I will be able to use when I step into the real world.” When she attends CLU, Savannah will be pursuing a degree in international business as she feels it would “combine my love for travel and people with business.” Already a well-traveled individual, Savannah even attended the 2012 Olympics in London and witnessed the US Women’s Water Polo team win the gold medal. Savannah has also visited Washington, D.C., New York, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, and even Paris. Suffice it to say, this water polo dynamo is going places! ¢

RPLL HOSTS A FRIENDLY GAME WITH KOREAN ALL-STAR TEAM

his past February, the Korean Little League National Team, comprised of thirty-six all-star players from South Korea, visited San Diego for a series of friendly matches with local Little League teams. Participating in the Xtreme Diamond Sports President’s Day Tournament, Team Korea was split into two groups to play against teams in Los Angeles and San Diego. Team Korea’s goal was to prepare their players for the Little League International Asia Pacific Qualifier later this year. If successful, many of the players from this team will be playing at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. The team played against many travel ball teams in San Diego,

including the California Lookouts, San Diego Stars, Mira Mesa Crush, Scripps Ranch Renegades, Chula Vista Green Sox and 92129’s very own Rancho Peñasquitos Little League (RPLL) Diamondbacks. Hansol Hong, the host for Team Korea, reached out to Ron Cho, the coach coordinator for the RPLL. “Hansol contacted me, as he and I are colleagues in the community,” said Ron, “He knew I was involved with baseball, as my two boys play Little League and travel ball. So he reached out to begin helping set up those friendly games.” The Diamondbacks and the Korean National Team played a rousing game, where in the end, the score didn’t matter. At the end of the evening, players and coaches exchanged gifts as a sign of friendship. ¢

espite the rain that threatened the beginning of softball season, no bad omens were seen as the players of PQ Girls Softball stepped on the mounds for the first games of the season in early March. Scott Ward, President of PQ Girls Softball Association, said, “We have seen a 10% increase in the number of players in our league, which is a huge change compared to prior years. Most local softball leagues are really suffering to maintain their numbers, while PQ seems to be growing.” In terms of new things to expect this season, Scott mentioned that the fields have new fences and backstops, improved equipment, and more clinics available for players. :::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Real Estate Matters Keep it in Perspective by SCOTT VOAK
T
here has been a lot said about the increase in homes for sale this year. Buyers’ agents are using it to say the market is now a buyers’ market, and in fact, San Diego County ended January with 36% more active residential listings than in 2013 (data from SANDICOR MLS as of 2/11/14). That is a significant change and much more than the 4 to 6% increase being quoted nationwide. However, last year we had an extreme shortage of inventory that helped spur a 20% price increase between February and July. So yes, compared to last year we have significant increase in inventory, but if you look back a little farther it is quite a different story. Compared to January of 2012, inventory is down 28% and compared to January of 2011, inventory is 50% lower this year. So if you are selling a home, don’t let anyone tell you it’s a buyers’ market right now. The market has settled into a new equilibrium where buyers and sellers are pretty even. What is tipping the market one way or another is the combination of how the home is presented and marketed. Sellers and agents that take the time to properly stage a house, and invest in professional marketing through all the relevant channels, are doing quite well. If you want to take the easy way out and get your home on the market quickly without painting, landscaping, and clean-up, plan on showing your home for an extended period of time and reducing the price to where it appears to be a bargain for buyers. This is a different market for most San Diegans as we have bounced between an extreme sellers’ market and an extreme buyers’ market over the last decade. We are now in a period where marketing matters and preparation pays off. ¢

WESTVIEW AND MT. CARMEL HIGH SCHOOLS GET READY FOR GRAD NITE
W
e’re only months away from June, and graduation is just on the horizon for the many seniors in 92129. And with crossing the stage comes a celebration in the form of Grad Nite. This year, Westview High School (WVHS) and Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS) are putting the finishing touches on their Grad Nites, but could use the community’s help is creating a fun and safe night for their seniors.
WESTVIEW HIGH SCHOOL WVHS is celebrating their ten year anniversary of Grad Nite since the first graduating class in 2005. This year, the event is being held on the WVHS campus, which allows the planning committee to get creative and construct their own sets. “Unfortunately, the warehouse that we have used to build our façade in for the last five years was sold, and we don’t have a warehouse to build in this year,” said Keri Bohart, Vice President of the Grad Nite Committee. “We are hoping to find something, but we haven’t had any luck yet.” The committee’s largest fundraiser of the year is the Parent Gala on April 26. It will take place at The Ranch House in Del Sur, from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person which includes dancing, food, and a silent auction. Keri also noted that anyone interested in making a donation toward the WVHS Grad Nite should contact Bridget Dibble at 619-507-6960 or email Bridget at bdibble1@san.rr.com. For more information on WVHS Grad Nite visit www.westviewgradnite.org. Any parents who are curious about the Grad Nite that their child will be attending is welcome to preview the set on June 11, the day before graduation. No high school students will be allowed at the preview, of course!
MT. CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL MCHS is doing something a little different – taking their seniors out to Party Pals in Sorrento Valley. At Party Pals, the Grad Nite Committee will be able to customize the experience for their seniors, with available activities such as DJ and dancing, arcade games, poker tables, illusionists, bowling, racing, and more. However, what will actually be there for MCHS Grad Nite 2014 will be a mystery to the seniors until they flock into Party Pals that night. “We have over 250 seniors that have bought tickets and we are hopeful that many more will attend and take advantage of this opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments together,” said Paul Martirano, Grad Nite 2014 Committee Chair. The MCHS Grad Nite Committee is currently looking for business and corporate donations, in order to make this event “a great success” for MCHS seniors. To order tickets or donate for Grad Nite visit www.mchs-gradnite.com. ¢
