:::: FROM THE PUBLISHER

Vol. 6, No. 1 TM

Publisher Derrick Breaux

92129’s 1st Annual REALTOR® Guide

I

like things that you can touch. If I can’t touch it, I at least like to be able to see it. It should come as no surprise to the people that know me that my world revolves around building things. Whether it is creating magazines, overseeing the launch of a website, starting and growing companies, remodeling a home or office space, or building a house from the ground up – I’m all in! Seeing the final product that wouldn’t exist otherwise is very rewarding. Even as a child, I would find simple pleasure in drawing floor plans of homes. In my mind, I was actually building those houses – or I was going to build them when I grew up. Although more than a few of my house designs didn’t contain some of the bare essentials that adults are accustomed to – like closets and storage areas – they certainly had amazing game rooms, huge garages, and bathtubs the size of small swimming pools. As it turns out, perhaps my 10-year-old imagination was onto something. Note to self: Revisit original concept of amazing game room (aka man cave) and huge garage (aka my favorite part of a house). We’ll table the bathtub discussion for a later time. You can definitely touch real estate. For nearly a decade in the early 2000s, I owned a real estate and mortgage company that had 97 licensed agents at its peak. Building a company from scratch to a team of 113 (counting the support personnel) was an incredible experience to say the least. I developed a profound respect for the real estate industry along the journey while overseeing thousands Derrick Breaux of transactions. I am still very close to many of the incredible professionals that Publisher made up our team. Simply put, I respect what REALTORS® do and how hard they work for their clients and the community. I value the many steps that take place during a real estate transaction. This issue of 92129 Magazine contains a very special 1st Annual REALTOR® Guide (see page 45). To be honest, I can’t believe we didn’t do this special issue sooner. There are many elements that go into building a community, and active local real estate professionals are definitely one of the key components. They are often a part of the community themselves, walking their kids to school or sitting next to us at soccer games. Many of them sponsor school programs and donate time and money to local charities and organizations. But perhaps the most important thing is that they are working with us on what is considered to be the single largest investment of our life – buying or selling our homes. While we often see the faces of our local REALTOR® celebrities in the pages of this magazine, on the real estate signs around town, on the ballpark fences, or even on the shopping carts watching us as we make the dreadful decision to go with paper or plastic, I wanted to take it one step further. Real estate is definitely hyper-local, and this REALTOR® Guide gives you a glimpse into the individual movers and shakers of our local real estate industry. The intention of the REALTOR® Guide is to create a personal introduction to the actual person – not just the REALTOR® – that dedicates their career to overseeing our local real estate market. I hope that you enjoy getting to know your REALTORS®. Be sure to say hello to them when you see them around town at Starbucks, on the fields, at the schools, or during their open houses. They are constantly working in front of and behind the scenes to keep their fingers on the real estate market pulse and see that our communities continue to move forward. All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

:::: FACES IN THE CROWD

JOHNNY DUMAS JR. INVENTED THE SPIKE BITE VEST FOR PETS by LINDA FRABL | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

I

f a child placed sharp wall tacks into a toy truck’s rubber wheels that faced out, the average parent would be a bit alarmed and concerned for that child’s safety and welfare. Luckily for Johnny Dumas Jr., an inventor from Rancho Peñasquitos who actually did this to his own toy truck, his mom was not your average parent, and she encouraged Johnny’s wildly creative ideas. Johnny recalled, “As a young child I was fascinated with spikes, and I called my toy truck’s new wheels ‘Spiky Wheels.’ My mother was also an inventor, so I grew up learning about the patent process for new inventions. I’d also accompany her to do research at the library and help color her invention drawings.” Many years later, Johnny was chatting with his mom about how many coyotes he’d spotted at the golf course next to their home, and he was worried that his own precious dog, Maggie, might be attacked by them. His mom asked how he was going to protect Maggie. Johnny recollected, “Without missing a beat, I replied, ‘With spikes!’” Thus the Spike Bite pet protection vest was born. Spike Bite is a wearable vest for pets which uses pressurereleased, stab resistant metal spike materials that prevent serious injury to a dog or a cat during a predator attack. Johnny elaborated, “The spikes are positioned at your pet’s most vulnerable areas, and they are embedded within bright fluorescent pads that reflect light. The pads are dense and prevent the spikes from accidently poking others, and they make it safe for owners to pick up and hold their pets.” Extra buckles secure the Spike Bite onto a pet, and the neoprene fabric offers added comfort. It only weighs six ounces, and the Spike Bite can be tailored for any size pet. If you go onto his website, www.spikebite.com, you can read Johnny’s blog in which he posts educational information about protecting pets. Johnny also emphasizes that he supports various nonprofit organizations, and he stated, “I would like to use my company to provide lunches to the underprivileged of San Diego, and to create a foundation that will give insight and guidance to our youth.” Appreciative of all that he has, Johnny added, “To actually have my own product is a blessing, and I will never take this opportunity for granted.”  Name: Profession: Family: Interests:

NORTH COUNTY LITERACY FOUNDATION HELPING CHILDREN SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND LIFE

M

aria Bagby, owner of the Therapeutic Literacy Center, recently founded the North County Literacy Foundation (NCLF), a nonprofit corporation dedicated to educating parents and teachers about how to recognize the signs of learning challenges. The foundation supports assessment and therapy for students of all ages with auditory processing disorder (APD), ADHD, or dyslexia, whose families cannot afford private treatment. NCLF’s three-fold approach changes the lives of these students by accurately diagnosing the reasons behind their learning struggles, addressing the underdeveloped or inefficient underlying learning skills, and providing therapy to rebuild their self-esteem and help them look forward to their successful future. Maria shared, “Research has proven that the brain can change! Studies in brain neuroplasticity reveal that strengthening the weaker underlying processes allows students to catch up and become successful and independent life-long learners.”

The Hardest Thing MCHS GRADUATES COMBINE TALENTS FOR FEATURE FILM PROJECT

A

22-year-old Scripps Ranch resident is teaming up with other local talents to create his first feature film, titled The Hardest Thing. Jake Snyder is serving as the project’s director, producer, and writer, and graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 2011. The team recently wrapped up their 21-day filming schedule in mid-July. The Hardest Thing is a coming of age story about two couples transitioning from high school to college. Jake developed the story with Rancho Bernardo High School graduate Liam Makagiansar and San Diego native Gabe Shootman. Then he and Liam continued writing the screenplay. “What inspired us to write this story was watching a lot of people in our lives go through similar situations that occur in the script. We wanted to ground these situations into a story that a mass audience could relate to,” shared Jake. He continued, “When we finished the script, we sat down and discussed what kind of impact we’d like it to have. We want people to watch this film and realize that everything they go through when they grow up is normal, and that everything happens for a reason.” Liam is a producer, writer, and supporting actor for the project. Mt. Carmel graduate Monark Nakrani is the president of production. Kevan Kiely-Gilden, another Mt. Carmel graduate,

is also a producer. The cast includes Garrett Slack, Kayla Schaffroth, and Samantha Littleford, all of whom are San Diego natives or went to school here. Garrett and Kayla are also Mt. Carmel graduates. For more information visit www.turn4films.com. ¢

F

ifteen-year-old Brighid Johnson is a competitive cheerleader who is not afraid of hard work or difficult cheer stunts. “The sheer athleticism of stunting, jumping, and tumbling is exhilarating. There’s a lot of training, conditioning, and practicing that goes into a two minute and 30 second routine, but when you hit a zero deduction performance surrounded by your 35 teammates on the cheer floor, all the hard work is really worth it,” said Brighid. She has been cheering for nine years, starting out with Rancho Peñasquitos Pop Warner, then the California All-Stars, and most recently with Cali Coed, the senior large coed team based in San Marcos. She has competed with Cali Coed in the World Championships the last

two years, earning second in 2014 and third in 2015. “I am hoping that Cali Coed can celebrate being first in the world at the 2016 Cheerleading World Championships,” said Brighid. Brighid is also a talented musician, playing viola with the Westview Gold Orchestra. “I started with the violin in fifth grade since they didn’t offer viola in elementary school. Once I entered middle school and was able to learn to play the viola, I was hooked,” stated Brighid. According to Brighid, the viola’s rich, deep sound captivated her. She has also thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing with the Westview Gold Orchestra, including the friends she’s made and the opportunity to grow as a musician. As far as academics are concerned, Brighid’s favorite class is English. “I love studying the amazing literature of some of the world’s most brilliant writers. I also enjoy expanding my vocabulary,” related Brighid, who also loves to write in her spare time. When she is not on the cheer floor, the classroom, or practicing the viola, she can often be found singing, drawing, and running. In fact, Brighid has run a number of 5K and 10K races and has completed four half-marathons. “I’ll be participating in the 2016 San Diego Rock n' Roll Half Marathon with my mom,” said Brighid. She cites her parents and her brother as her biggest cheerleaders in all her endeavors, from competitive cheer to music and running. Looking to the future, Brighid is focused on going to college and then medical school. “I’d like to become a psychiatrist. I’d like to travel the world before I settle down with a family of my own,” revealed this bright young student star. 

nthony and Christine Jensen were high school sweethearts. They both played lacrosse and met through friends in their junior year at Mt. Carmel High. They married a year and a half ago and have settled into family life well. Anthony is a spine rehab specialist for Spine Zone. Christine is an instructional assistant in the Poway Unified School District. Their shared passion for lacrosse now extends to youth players. The Jensens are junior varsity coaches for girls and boys lacrosse at their alma mater, and Christine coaches also at 3d Lacrosse. "It is great to be back working with a program that started my lacrosse career," reflected Christine. She describes how lacrosse is now more competitive and popular. Students are playing the game earlier, "and there are many more options for playing the off-season than when I played."

Anthony explained, "The program has become much more respected and successful. This was a very exciting year for Mt. Carmel boys lacrosse because we won the California Interscholastic Federation." This will be Christine's seventh season coaching lacrosse. She appreciates Head Coach Chelsea, has fun with her team, and loves the community of Mt. Carmel families. "Sometimes it is a player's first exposure to lacrosse and I enjoy watching their love and respect for the game grow," added Christine. As they prepare their players for the varsity level, Anthony expressed, "I enjoy helping the boys build the foundation of their skills while also having fun and building interest in the sport." Christine reminisced, "We consider Rancho Peñasquitos our home, still, because both of our families live here". After high school, they attended CSU San Marcos. Christine added, "I started their women's club lacrosse program in 2010 and played until graduating.” Anthony also played lacrosse for two years in college. They graduated in 2012. Anthony obtained a B.S. in Kinesiology, and Christine, a B.A. in liberal studies. Watching local sports teams and hanging out with their friends and families keeps them entertained. Local travel destinations include trips to the desert or hiking Black Mountain. Across the years, lacrosse has been a unifying element. The Jensens are on the field – coaching the game they love and inspiring others. 

:::: YOUR NEIGHBOR’S RECIPE

Ingredients 8 sheets phyllo dough, thawed 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 package frozen spinach, thawed ½ cup red onion, diced 1 cup feta cheese, crumbled 12 cherry tomatoes, cut into thirds 5 eggs 1 ½ cups whipping cream ½ teaspoon nutmeg ½ teaspoon cinnamon

About the Chef

Directions 1.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and spray the bottom and sides of a large pie or quiche dish with nonstick cooking spray. 2. Lay two phyllo sheets on top of each other. Lightly brush olive oil on the top sheet. (You do not need to cover the entire sheet). Repeat three times until all sheets are used. Place sheets into dish. Trim off extra edging. 3. In a large bowl, crack the five eggs and quickly mix. 4. Add cream, nutmeg, and cinnamon to the eggs. Mix well then set aside. 5. Open the spinach and squeeze the excess water out of it. I find the quickest way is to take handfuls of the spinach and squeeze. 6. Sprinkle half of the feta cheese over the bottom of the dish and then layer the spinach in loose clumps over the feta. Sprinkle the onions over the spinach and then sprinkle the remaining feta over the onions. 7. Pour the egg mixture over the top of feta, spinach, and onion mixture. 8. Place the tomatoes evenly over the top of the quiche. 9. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes until center is firm. 10. Let sit for two to three minutes, then slice and enjoy! Other than his dislike of watermelon, everything else is fair game. My inspiration comes from a multitude of places, but most recently I’ve been focusing on incorporating healthier ingredients into my recipes. Cooking is both relaxing and rewarding for me – I love sitting around a table enjoying a meal I created with family and friends. This year I started my blog at www.balancingcinderella.blogspot.com; it’s a great way for me to share our favorite recipes. Mediterranean foods and flavors are some of my favorites. I incorporated some of them into this quiche and replaced the typical pie crust with a lighter phyllo crust. It’s a hit every time I make it. ¢

or the sixth consecutive year, local residents came together in Hilltop Park to celebrate PQ Flag Day in mid-June. Held as an annual event in commemoration of Flag Day by the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council (RPTC), the tradition began after PQ resident Alex Preisser approached the RPTC to request a grant to build a veterans’ memorial at Hilltop Park for his Eagle Scout project and the council organized an installation of a flagpole to accompany the memorial. This year’s Flag Day saw local dignitaries such as San Diego City Councilmen Mark Kersey and Chris Cate in attendance, along with VFW Post 11388, Boy Scout Troop 648, Cub Scout Pack 626, local Girl Scout troops, Westview High School’s JROTC Color Guard, and the Marine Corps Color Guard from MCAS Miramar. ¢

SDYS 70th Anniversary China Tour LOCAL MUSICIANS TAKE TRIP OF A LIFETIME

T

he San Diego Youth Symphony (SDYS) recently returned from their 70th Anniversary China Tour. The trip allowed advanced musicians from SDYS’s Ovation Program as well as SDYS alumni, staff, and board members to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in concerts in three Chinese cities between the end of June and beginning of July. The jam-packed itinerary took the musicians to Beijing, Yantai, and Shanghai, and though some of their time was split between rehearsing and preparing for their performances, they were also able to see famous sights and connect with the locals. They toured locations such as the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, Yu Garden and Bazaar, and of course the Great Wall. Many of the SDYS students enjoyed the cultural exchange aspect of the trip as well. Mt. Carmel High School student Owen

Cruise shared, “On our last day in Beijing we visited students at Beijing Music Conservatory High School. Some of my favorite experiences with the students was experiencing the novelty of the traditional Chinese instruments and their amazing sounds. I enjoyed bonding with the students over lunch and learning about their school life.” Another local student Amanda Chen commented, “The Chinese people were so warm and welcoming to us during our stay! The hospitality of the Chinese people was truly touching.” The musicians performed at the Forbidden City Concert Hall, the Poly Grand Theater, and the Oriental Arts Center. SDYS last visited China in 1981 when they had the honor of touring and performing in Canton, Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing. For more information visit www.sdys.org/china-2015. ¢

Debunking First Aid Myths FOOD IS BEST EATEN, NOT USED FOR INJURIES Back to school can be a whirlwind of sports and new activities that result in minor injuries. Here are a few first aid myths that may do more harm than good. Put butter on a burn. First-degree burns – the skin is red, but still feeling normal – can be treated at home, but don’t pull out the butter dish. Butter may do wonders for your mashed potatoes, but it does nothing for burns except add foreign particles and increase the risk of infection. Reach for a cool cloth and a frozen bag of vegetables instead. Minor burns need to be cooled, so run cool water over the burned area for at least 10 minutes and then apply an over-the-counter antibiotic. Throw back your head if you have a nose bleed. Never tilt your head back to stop a nose bleed as it will only make the blood flow down the throat into the lungs or into the stomach, which may cause vomiting. To stop a bloody nose, lean slightly forward and pinch your nose just below the bony part where glasses sit using your thumb and index finger. Press firmly for no less than five to 10 minutes. If a bloody nose follows an accident or injury to the head, seek medical attention immediately. Also contact your primary care doctor if you have frequent nosebleeds or if they are difficult to control.

by KAYLAN GRAHAM, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Carmel Valley

Apply cold only to a twisted knee or ankle. How you treat a twisted ankle or knee depends on the stage of the injury. If you can immediately treat the area, use RICE: rest, ice for the first 24 hours, compress gently with a bandage, and elevate the twisted area over the level of your heart. Applying ice reduces swelling and pain and limits any internal bleeding at the injury site. To use ice effectively, place it on the affected area in a thin towel for 20 minutes at a time. Apply heat to an injury after the first few days, when the inflammation has decreased and increasing blood flow to the area can provide healing nutrients. Your primary care doctor can help evaluate the injury. Apply a cold steak to a black eye. Keep the steak for dinner and bring out that bag of frozen vegetables instead. Your frozen steak may have bacteria on it, so covering your eye with it is not recommended. Instead of steak apply a crushed ice pack or the frozen vegetable package to the affected area for 10 minutes at a time. If the eyeball itself is damaged or if the vision is affected, see your doctor. Clean a cut or scrape with hydrogen peroxide. Using hydrogen peroxide to clean an injury can actually harm the tissue and delay healing. The best way to treat a minor cut or scrape is to cool and clean it with cool water, rinsing thoroughly to remove dirt, debris, and bacteria. Protect the injury with a bandage and see your doctor for a wound that is large, deep, or bleeding nonstop. ¢

A

ssemblymember Brian Maienschein recently recognized local Fitness Quest 10 as the 2015 Small Business of the Year for the 77th Assembly District. The Scripps Ranch business is owned by Todd Durkin, who spent his career training professional NFL, MLB, and WNBA athletes before opening his gym in 2000. The business has grown from small beginnings into a full-service gym with a staff of 38, and has been named one of the top 10 gyms in the country by Men’s Health for the past four years. “For 15 years, Todd has used his expertise working with some of the country’s top professional athletes to inspire people of all ages to take control of their lives by making healthier diet and exercise choices,” said Maienschein. “Fitness Quest 10 was founded on my belief that every single person can lead a healthy, fulfilling life if they have the discipline, have a positive attitude, and surround

themselves with the right people,” said Durkin. “It is an incredible honor to be recognized by Assemblymember Maienschein as the 2015 Small Business of the year, and I am proud to share the recognition with the hardworking Fitness Quest 10 team and all of our clients.” The Small Business of the Year for each district is nominated by that district’s legislator every year and recognized by the California Small Business Association. Legislators select businesses based on their business ethics and community services, and winning business owners travel to Sacramento to receive their award. Last year’s Small Business of the Year Award went to ZCode Magazines. Publisher and Co-Owner Derrick Breaux, Creative Director and Co-Owner Tyler McElhaney, Editor Sarabeth McElhaney, and Director of Business Development Jessica Breaux were proud to accept the award on behalf of the rest of the team. ¢

PQ Student Recognized with CTY Award

Local Rancho Peñasquitos resident Aakarsh Vermani was recognized as one of the brightest young students in the world at a regional awards ceremony for academically advanced children sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). A high-achieving student from Park Village Elementary, Aakarsh was one of more than 33,000 students from over 60 countries who participated in the CTY Talent Search testing earlier this year. The testing allows students to take above-grade level tests that measure academic talent and capacity for learning, such as the School and College Ability Test or the Spatial Test Battery. Seventh and eighth grade participants even take the SAT and ACT. Due to the rigorous academic nature of the tests, only 30 percent of students who participated earned an invitation to the CTY awards ceremony where they are recognized for their individual achievements. Local Girl Scouts Earn Gold Award

Bhavika Anandpura, Shreya Huilgol, Sakshi Madan, Annelise Morgan, Elaine Ngo, and Katherine Smith have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award – the organization’s highest honor – for their outstanding leadership and commitment to taking action. For her Gold Award project, Bhavika worked with representatives of the seven largest cultural groups in San Diego to plan a series of immersion activities for kids in an effort to expand children’s worldviews. Shreya visited students and doctors in the U.S. and India to encourage the practice of checking children’s blood pressure. Sakshi hosted workshops where young people learned simple ways to protect the environment. Annelise provided graphing calculators to a school library, allowing students to take advanced math without purchasing the expensive tool. Elaine taught enrichment math lessons to elementary school students. Katherine showed middle school girls how to make the most of limited funds by using money wisely and recycling or sewing clothes. Bhavika, Shreya, Sakshi, Annelise, Elaine, and Katherine are among 43 Girl Scouts in San Diego and Imperial Valley who earned the Gold Award this year.

Community Outreach Softball Game

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Northeastern Division teamed up with the Rancho Bernardo Community Council, Councilmember Mark Kersey, the councilman’s representative Garrett Hager, and members of the community for a community outreach softball game. The event was intended to foster engagement and camaraderie between the division and the community, and by all accounts it was a complete success. “It was all for fun – we kept score but everyone was a winner. We had citizens asking us to make this an annual event,” said Community Relations Officer Shannah Oliveras. “Officers and citizens were looking forward to the possibility of future games.” The SDPD Northeastern Division is already making plans for future events, with the goal of hosting an annual event in each of the division’s communities. “This gives everyone an opportunity to really socialize with each other, share some laughs, and have fun,” said Shannah. “There is no agenda, no structured meeting, no worry of having to rush off to handle the next radio call or report. Just two hours of having a good time.”

:::: IN THE SPOTLIGHT

LEARNING PROBLEMS DON’T HAVE TO BE PERMANENT photos by Tyler McElhaney

W

hy do smart children struggle in school? “When children are struggling in school there are likely underlying learning skills that are underdeveloped, inefficient, or need correcting. These are hidden challenges and most go unrecognized,” says Maria Bagby, Owner and Executive Director of the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC). “Many are labeled with ADHD, Reading Disorders, or just said to have low motivation.” These are the children that spend hours doing homework, feel conflict in family dynamics because of homework, and begin to feel less smart than they really are. TLC identifies and fixes the problem that is causing challenges and frustrations. “Our highly trained and professional clinicians are trained in identifying these deficits in underlying skills and in developing those skills through very specialized systems, techniques, programs, and tools. We specialize in developing and correcting deficits in auditory and visual processing, processing speed, working

memory, reflex integration, motor coordination, sensory integration, logic and reasoning, and many others areas that are critical for independent academic success.” After 30 years in education and three Master’s degrees (Psychology, Reading, and Curriculum and Assessment), Maria knows well the training that educators receive. According to her, schools are taught how to create accommodations and in helping children learn to compensate for learning problems. They aren’t trained in how to fix the problems. “The neurosciences haven’t reached the schools yet, resources are limited, and it’s just not in their job description. The schools’ job is to help children access the curriculum – not to fix the problem that is causing the difficulty. And they don’t have the time in their day to develop the underlying learning skills that might be creating the difficulties these students experience.” Children become successful independent learners when these hidden underlying skills are developed. The lives of children and families change and homework is no longer a struggle. In addition, TLC students and families

find a safe haven that is both life-changing and fun. “It’s a welcoming and friendly environment with the buzz of hard work, a lot of laughter, and a real feeling of enjoyment for each individual as the gifted people they really are,” Maria said. Parents often comment that their child feels ‘normal’ at TLC, that they feel accepted, affirmed, and mentored by clinicians that know how smart they really are. One such parent shared, “My son absolutely loves going to TLC because he feels like the gifted and smart child he actually is. I’m no longer seeing his frustrations but his joy in finding the quick ways he grasps things.” Another parent commented, “Our daughter’s ability to read has improved dramatically. Not surprisingly, so has her confidence. She is a much happier and welladjusted teenager.” For more information about their individualized programs or to find out how TLC can help your child visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com. RP Basketball Teaches Skills and Sportsmanship to The Youth of Rancho Peñasquitos photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

S

ince it was established in 1993, Rancho Peñasquitos Basketball has become well-known in the community for its recreational programs that teach athletic skills, leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork to the young athletes of PQ. With leagues for boys and girls starting in third grade, this organization prides itself on starting with the fundamentals and building strong athletes in a positive, all-inclusive environment. We sit down with President Brian Reschke to talk about the history of the league and find out what makes RP Basketball such an important part of the community.

August | September 2015 • 92129Magazine.com • 39

:::: COVER FEATURE

Q&A What is the history behind the Rancho Peñasquitos Basketball League? RP Basketball (RPB) formed in 1993 out of a split from Poway Youth Basketball League (PYBL). Prior to 1993 Rancho Peñasquitos residents played in Poway. PYBL needed extra gym space, which we had with Black Mountain Middle School’s new gym and the Canyonside Recreation Center just opening. In the last years as part of PYBL we split into an east and west division and only played the Poway teams on the championship day. When the PYBL reached a little over 600 residents from PQ, our founding president Doug Smith split off from PYBL and created RPB. Doug is still an active part of the community and helps his son Kyle Smith run the Wolverine club and high school basketball programs. RPB grew from the first year at around 600 players to nearly 900 players at its peak. When the Wolverines and Sundevils started club programs some players left, so over the last few years we have been operating just over the 600 mark. In our 23 years we have only had seven different presidents on the board which has helped keep the league unique to the community.

What is the mission of RPB and how does the organization go about fulfilling it? RPB is a recreational youth basketball organization in the Rancho Peñasquitos neighborhood. Teams are organized into divisions by grade level, including grades three through 12. Our objective is to provide and promote a wholesome recreational basketball program for the youth of our community. Within this objective, RPB was formed to encourage and foster positive sportsmanship, cultivate good playing skills, and promote friendly relationships among the participants, coaches, and parents.

What is the timeline for the season? Games will begin on Jan. 2 with the regular season ending March 12. We will observe winter break starting Feb. 13. Playoffs for

with Brian Reschke RP Basketball President

boys divisons grade four through 12 and girls divisions grade five through 12 will be March 19 through 20, with the championship game on March 26 at Black Mountain Middle School.

What overall experience can basketball players expect while playing for RP Basketball? Players can expect to have one practice a week and one game a week minimum. All players should expect to improve their basic fundamentals skills of the game, including dribbling, shooting, passing, defense, and teamwork. Players can also expect a good workout as well as improved focus and organizational skills.

How are the teams formed to ensure they are balanced appropriately? We end each season with player evaluations to carry over to the next year and also hold a tryout for all new players to the league. Those dates will be posted to our website depending on gym availability. Division coordinators and coaches also rank the players through a draft based on their skill level and player evaluations. Once the teams are established we place coaches on each team. With the complex nature of the draft, we have difficulty finding an assistant coach and team parent for each team and we often find it next to impossible to accommodate special requests for a particular coach or friend. Often the best teams are the ones with the most involved parents who put in a few extra volunteer hours.

How many teams does the league have? What is the age range breakdown? RPB had 81 teams last season and a little over 620 players. Each division can change from year to year depending on the number of players in each age group. Currently we are planning on seven boys divisions by grades three, four, five, six, seven, eight and nine, and 10 through 12. We will have three girls divisions by grades three

40 • 92129Magazine.com • August | September 2015

and four, five and six, and seven through 10. Sign up early! Every year we have another 10 to 20 players who sign up too late.

What is your role at RP Basketball? What is the most rewarding part of this position? The most challenging? I am the new president for 2015 to 2016. My job is to make sure we have a successful season, and all the board members and coaches do their job to ensure the players have fun. I have been involved in the organization for a long time. I played in the league the first year it formed, when it was still part of PYBL. Many of the founding board members had sons that played in the league with me. My dad coached me for six years while I played. When I was 15 I became a referee in the league and continued until 2003. I did not play RPB in high school, but coached my brother and neighbor while in high school and college. In the five years I coached I learned a lot about the players. They want someone they can relate to and make the game a fun experience. My goal as a coach was to have the players be better at the end of the season than when they started. With a young daughter I don’t have the time to coach anymore, but I wanted to help out so for the last four years I have been the boys third grade coordinator. The most challenging part is to rank all the skill levels and make the teams fair. It’s a lot of work.

Tell us about the coaching staff and the type of experience and skills that they bring to the table. Our coaches range from family members to high school and college students performing community service. Many have no formal coaching training, but have a love of the game. Having a volunteer to coach a team is the number one thing to help make the league a success. Many parents think they don’t know the game well enough or have the time to commit, but the more parents that help out the easier the coaches’ job becomes.

Who are the other board members? What are their responsibilities? Mike Pazkil – Treasurer, Dave DeVries – Director & Practice Facilities, Brent N. – Director, Charlie Hill – Director, Ralph Columbino – Director, Ryan Wooten – Head Referee, Brad Reschke – Parks and Rec. We are looking for board members for the following: secretary, stats, marketing, registration, and compliance. Our division coordinators run the draft for their grades, most coach a team, and they schedule practice times. Our current division coordinators and open coordinators positions are as follows.

Boys 3 – Open Boys 4 – Open Boys 5 – Chad Dempsy Boys 6 – Brent N. Boys 7 – Dave Spork Boys 8 and 9 – Open Boys 10 through 12 – Barrett Kiernan Girls 3 and 4 – Dave DeVries Girls 5 and 6 – Mike Fillat Girls 7 through 10 – Open

RPB would like to thank the strong contributions of all our past presidents in order Doug Smith, Craig Robinson, Thom Golden-Grant, Mike Palzkill, Charlie Hill, and Tom Downey.

What is the most rewarding aspect of coaching? The most challenging? Coaching is very rewarding. Teaching our youth valuable life skills like teamwork, commitment, and self-reliance is great. Many of the basketball skills that are taught at this level can be improved individually with just a ball. I like when former players and parents come up to me years later and say they had fun. The most challenging part of coaching is time management at practice. Time flies by and not every skill will be worked on. All the players like to scrimmage at practice and that becomes the whole focus after seventh grade. The players will outrun the coaches at that point and won’t want to stop after their one-hour practice or game. This high level of play becomes a great workout for the coaches as well.

Where do the leagues referees and score keepers come from? Our referees and scorekeepers are local high school and college students. Many played in the league and feel it is great to give back. Once you learn basketball from a referee standpoint, you understand the game so much better. Our scorekeepers are also paid. We want to make the game enjoyable for the parents to watch and record. We do ask that each team provide one timekeeper for half the season.

Do you have any upcoming fundraisers or meets you would like to share with our readers? RPB relies on registration fees to help offset our gym rental fees, referee fees, insurance fees, and other mounting operational costs. Our volunteers receive no compensation so 100% of your donation goes toward the cost of operating our program. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit and don’t want to burden parents or players with selling candy or other items.

What are the registration dates for your upcoming season? Will you have any in-person registration events and is online registration available? Registration will open Sept. 1 and will be closed Nov. 15 or when divisions are full. Practice will start after the teams are formed at the end of November. High school players are encouraged to join, and for any that make the high school teams a full refund will be issued. To register visit our website at www.rpbasketball.org. If you cannot submit the application online, you can print it out and mail it to the address listed on the application.

Where and when do games take place during the season? We have games at three different sites. Boys 3 and 4 and Girls 3 to 6 play at Black Mountain Middle School. Boys 5, 6, 7, and Girls 7 to 10 play at Canyonside Recreation Center. Boys 8 and 9 and 10 through 12 play at Mesa Verde Middle School. The sites are subject to change depending on how many teams we have in each division.

Are you associated with the Wolverines or Sundevils? No. We know most of the coaching staff of both programs but are not affiliated with either. We are a recreational level of play for a single season. We encourage everyone to go watch a high school basketball game during the season; both teams have improved in the last 15 years. Those interested in a full year commitment to club basketball should reach out to either of these programs depending on which high school district they are located in.

Does RP Basketball need volunteers? If so, how does one get involved? Yes, yes, yes. We need board members and coaches. If you would like to join the board, we have a few small positions you can start with to help the league. You can email me at hoop@rpbasketball.org. If you would like to

coach and do not have a player in the league, you can email hoop@rpbasketball.org as well. We have our short background check form available for download on our website that is required before any games or practices start. For parents with players in the league that would like to help out, fill out the remarks section and the volunteer section on the application.

What makes RP Basketball unique as compared to other recreational basketball leagues? Our rules are what make this league stand out. Many have carried over from our days with PYBL. The best example of this is our playing time. Many coaches have challenged me on this, but we make it fair for all the players. We have four quarters and each player must sit out one quarter and play two

full quarters start to finish. This guaranteed playing time is great. We also have our championship day for all but boys three and girls three to four, so everyone can come and watch their division winner. Other special rules teach the fundamentals of the game. Our lower grades only play man-on-man defense with no full court press or double teaming allowed. We ease the players into these more aggressive rules as they get older and understand the game. By seventh grade all the special rules are gone and you see real basketball.

If you could describe the teams in five words or less, what would you say? Fun, healthy, leadership, rewarding, sportsmanship. 

Theresa and Ray Shay Shay Realtors

OUR COMMUNITY HUBS® SHARED WORKSPACE DYNAMICS ARE CHANGING THE FUTURE OF RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE Theresa and Ray Shay are the owners of Shay Realtors, one of the fastest growing residential real estate companies in Southern California, with over $251 million total sales in San Diego County and over $140 million in 92127 alone. Their unique business structure and nationwide trademarked Community Hubs® are redefining their industry and service to their local communities. Theresa explained their business processes are quite different than most real estate companies and the layout of their hubs are only one aspect of how they are breaking the current real estate mold. “Just about everyone thought we were crazy when we started opening community hubs, but we’re thrilled with what we have built and where we are going next.”

“Connecting businesses and communities, one Hub at a time.” The Shays have established three Community Hub® locations in the 92127 and 92129 zip codes with two located in 92127 (4S Ranch) and their third retail location near the Starbucks in the Rancho Peñasquitos Towne Centre. Ray added, “It takes a few minutes to wrap your mind around the fact that you are building a real estate company with no permanent desks, you’re open until 8 p.m. in the evening, and by the way, teachers, coaches, volunteers, and other nonprofits use your facilities absolutely free.” Ray, who is a retired San Diego Police Lieutenant and former SWAT Commanding Officer, said he developed the hub concept while working as a Field Lieutenant at Mid City Division, a unique and previously violent area in the City of San Diego where over 56 different languages are spoken.

Ray said, “The world is changing but everyone in every social economic level has the desire to meet. If you can build connections between nonprofits and local business people through a shared workspace environment, you can change the world.” Ray and Theresa have three sons, Troy, Raymond, and Ryan. They lived in Rancho Peñasquitos before moving to 4S Ranch and now currently reside in Del Sur. One of their greatest joys is giving back to the community and it really shows.

Integrity and expertise have been the pillars of David Rudd’s almost 20-year career in real estate. “When I chose the name Kindred, it was not just a name I picked out of a hat,” explained David. “I wanted a name that reflected my work philosophy.” David has a passion for fulfilling clients’ goals and believes that trust and honesty are crucial components. His goal is to treat every transaction as if it was his family’s. “The average agent spends less than $500 a month in marketing. David budgets more than $150,000 a year on marketing homes,” said Director of Marketing Anthony Montroy. His all five-star ratings on both Trulia and Zillow are a testament to his clients’ satisfaction. David shared, “Every close of escrow is a celebration – it’s a new beginning for our client, and that is so exciting for our team.” He backs up his philosophy of trust with his experience and education. He was named the youngest assistant vice president at Bank of America, then owned and operated one of the largest privately owned real estate appraisal corporations. He holds both a real estate broker’s license and a real estate appraiser’s license, and also has experience as a general contractor. He’s successfully completed thousands of appraisals all over San Diego. “You could say David is a neighborhood specialist to all of San Diego,” said Anthony. “His knowledge base is really that huge.” His favorite areas to sell in are throughout the Poway Unified School District, due to the tremendous energy and dedication to education. David’s commitment to education is apparent by looking at his office. “Every person on our team holds a college degree from a fouryear university,” said David. “We live and breathe continued education. There are a lot of good agents in the area – that is why our team has to work that much harder to be truly great.”

“Thank you! David, you and your Kindred team were exceptional. Everything you said you would do, you did… and more. I am still amazed with all of the marketing you did – my home’s brochure, being everywhere online, and your phone technology is what sold our home so quickly and above asking price. Your expertise as a former appraiser and contractor, not to mention the number of transactions you do per year, saved us both time and money. Your ability to quickly negotiate and explain (even to the buyer’s agent) inspection items got everyone on the same page quickly and without a hassle.

Brian suggested I downsize and now being free and clear, I will save over $50,000 before retirement in just interest savings.” Brian and his team work with many first-time home buyers as well. TIPS FOR P E V

R SKIN TH OU

Know Your Sunscreen Apply sunscreen to your face, ears, neck, arms, and any other areas not covered by clothing, and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day – a good rule of use is one ounce every two hours. Be sure to read the label before you pick one out. Broad spectrum sunscreens – those that protect against both UVA and UVB rays – with a SPF of at least 30 are a good place to start, though higher SPFs provide more protection for longer. Always follow directions on the label and check for expiration dates. Most

1

sunscreens are good for up to two to three years.

2

Wear Proper Clothing Clothing can provide different levels of sun protection, depending on the fabric, color, and of course, how much skin is being covered. Dark colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants are the most protective, and tightly-woven fabrics are best. If you hold the clothing up and can see light through the fabric, you’re still getting some UV exposure.

W

ith the arrival of the official season of beach days and backyard barbeques, it’s likely that you’ll be spending a lot more time outside for the next few months. While you’re putting on your swimsuit or bringing out the coolers and lawn chairs, it can be easy to forget to take the necessary steps to avoid the harmful effects of the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun, which is why we’ve put together a few simple tips on how to safeguard yourself and your family this summer.

3

Head for the Shade Avoiding too much direct sunlight is simple but important, especially during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when UV light is strongest. UV rays can reach below the water’s surface, so you can still get a burn while relaxing in the pool – and don’t forget that sun protection is necessary even on cloudy days. Protect Your Eyes, Too! Wearing a hat and sunglasses can help protect your vision, as well as cover up sensitive areas

4

that are difficult to protect with sunscreen, such as the scalp, ears, or delicate skin around the eyes. Choose a widebrimmed hat with at least two to three inches of tightly-woven fabric all the way around and a dark, non-reflective underside. Large-framed or wraparound style sunglasses are best for covering your eyes from light coming in from different angles. Before you buy check for labels that say “UV 400 protection” or “Meets ANSI UV Requirements” as these indicate that the sunglasses will block 99-percent of UV rays.

5

Use the UV Index Before you head out for a day in the sun, check the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website for the UV Index. The index represents the intensity of the UV rays of the sun on a scale of one to 11 to help you decide how much UV protection you’ll need for your outdoor adventure. The National Weather Service calculates the UV Index forecast daily and the EPA publishes the information, along with other recommendations for sun protection and planning sun-safe outdoor activities at www2.epa.gov/sunwise.

SAME DAY SMILES CAD SMILES BRINGS NEW SMILES TO PATIENTS IN JUST ONE VISIT by RANDI CANTRELL | photos by Tyler McElhaney

E

ddie Corales of CAD Smiles believes that a person’s smile is an important part of their personality – it can reflect their lifestyle and attitude, and is often the first thing that others will notice. His passion to help others find their perfect smile began five years ago when he started CAD Smiles, a company that focuses on sameday smile makeovers. Today he works with over 200 dentists all over San Diego County who own CEREC CAD/CAM technology and provides tooth restorations, full-mouth rehabilitations, implants, dentures, and many other services. In previous years, if crowns or dental veneers were necessary for a patient, multiple procedures and a great deal of waiting time in-between visits was inevitable. The CEREC CAD/CAM one-of-a-kind technology has changed these dental procedures completely. It now allows the smile designer to take digital scans of a patient’s teeth and work with them to personally customize a smile in just a few hours. “CAD Smiles is the only company in San Diego and the U.S. that offers same-day smile makeovers with a certified technician, or smile designer, onsite,” Eddie explained. “This means that a patient can come to the dental office with a smile that is not satisfactory to them and leave with a smile that suits them.”

Dr. Brian Davey is one local dentist who works with CAD Smiles and the CEREC CAD/ CAM technology. Dr. Davey was recently awarded the 2014 Doctor of the Year for NLP Complete Health Dentistry and earned a leadership award earlier this year. He comes from a family of dentistry and was mentored by his uncle, a pediatric dentist, who recognized early on that Dr. Davey had the skill, both technical and interpersonal, to become a good dentist. Today, Dr. Davey’s mission is to enhance people’s lives through health, wellness, and fun. He is committed to making a difference in the health of the San Diego community by getting 20,000 people healthier before 2020. He believes the mouth is connected to the body, the body is connected to the family, and the family is connected to the health of a community. Dr. Davey explained, “Bringing together the medical and dental communities and creating an inter-personal collaboration for the greater good of San Diego and my patients is my mission.” The atmosphere of CAD Smiles Same Day Smile Centers is similar to that of a spa rather than a traditional dentist’s office. Patients are made to feel comfortable and at ease, and more importantly, are included in the process of designing their new smile. “With our service, there are no uncertainties,” Eddie continued. “The final result is predictable because the dentist, patient, and smile designer work

58 • 92129Magazine.com • August | September 2015

together in perfect synergy. We apply the principles of visual art to the composition of the customized smile to create a result that expresses the patient’s personality and lifestyle, and ensures harmony between the restorations and the patient’s physical appearance, values, and attitude. It is a service you won’t get anywhere else.” 

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Get Away to the Great Outdoors at San Diego's Beautiful Campgrounds by LAINEY KRAL

W

hether you’re complete camping novices or grizzled outdoor experts, San Diego campgrounds can be the perfect weekend destination. Pack up your car, trailer, or motor home and head out for a taste of the great outdoors. An hour east of San Diego, Lake Morena County Park is a blend of coastal, desert, and mountain terrain. Ten cabins and 86 hook-up, partial hook-up, and tent sites mean there’s a perfect campsite for any family. The Morena Reservoir is open to personal canoes and kayaks, and motorized boats are available to rent for fishing and cruising. The famous Pacific Crest Trail passes near a select number of campsites. Bonita’s Sweetwater Summit Regional Park welcomes motor homes, trailers, and tent campers alike to 112 campsites in the 500-acre park. The 15 miles of trails are open to bikers, hikers, and horseback riders – some of the campsites include corrals so equine visitors can stay the night as well. Kick back and spend the afternoon fishing at Sweetwater Reservoir, then get dinner ready at one of the picnic pavilions.

William Heise County Park offers 103 campsites, almost 11 miles of multi-use trails, and 14 cabins with internet access for those who want to stay connected in comfort. Look out for mule deer and wild turkeys among the pines and oaks. The park is 4,200 feet above sea level near the historic gold rush town of Julian – head into the city during the day to visit the Pioneer Museum or pick up one of the famous local pies. Be sure to make reservations early and stay updated on current campfire and water use regulations. Remember to check the projected weather at your destination before you finalize your packing list. Learn more or check out other campgrounds at www.sandiegocounty.gov/parks/camping.

The S'More the Merrier Standard s’mores are delicious, but sometimes it’s fun to go beyond the traditional marshmallow, chocolate bar, and graham cracker sandwich. Whether you're making them over the campfire or in your fireplace, try a few of these ideas to get some more out of your s’mores! • • • • • •

Add sliced bananas or strawberries Add peanut butter or caramel sauce Use Nutella instead of chocolate Experiment with different kinds of candy bars Use cookies instead of graham crackers Try chocolate marshmallows and chocolate graham crackers ¢

2015 Sundevils Fall Sports Preview

E

xcitement reigns in the fall at Mt. Carmel. This fall is no different, as our athletes enthusiastically carry on the rich traditions of Mt. Carmel athletically and academically, and work hard to compete in the Palomar League. Coach Dennis McClanahan will guide the boys and girls cross country teams. The girls are coming off a CIF championship. There is a focus to continue the excellence of past years. Katie Fixsen returns for her eighth year at the helm of

our field hockey program. She has built a quality program and the level of play continues to grow stronger. John Anderson will be entering his fifth year as head football coach. Girls volleyball coach Christine Beadle will be directing our girls in a tough Palomar Volleyball league. Veteran Coach Jim Wrage again will be at the helm of the always competitive girls tennis team. First year coach Randy Galza brings back a young boys water polo team, looking for the opportunity to

return to the CIF playoffs. Jim Greci in his second year as girls golf coach is taking on the challenge of the Palomar League. Alyssa Ramos continues as the coach for our cheer program, which exemplifies the passion of the overall athletic program at Mt. Carmel. Please come and cheer on Mt. Carmel athletes as they create more memories for the storied Sundevil athletic program. And remember…“It’s great to be a Sundevil.” ~ Randy Wright, Athletic Director

2015 Wolverines Fall Sports Preview

T

he Westview Wolverines are looking forward to another exciting fall sports campaign as they prepare for the 2015-16 school year. Playing in the very challenging Palomar League promises to provide the stiffest competition in San Diego County once again as the Wolverines look to improve on last year’s performances. Leading the pack will be the Westview girls and boys cross country teams with first-year head coach Amanda Trujillo leading the charge. Coach Trujillo takes over

for last year’s “Coach of the Year” Bob Muschek, who stepped down at the end of track season last spring. In the pool, coach Matt Johnson will guide the experienced boys water polo team to another outstanding year. Coach Mike Woodward leads his football program in his ninth season. Coach Woody and his players look to improve on last year’s CIF playoff appearance with numerous underclassmen returning with a solid foundation to build on. The girls tennis and girls golf programs also look forward

to improving their overall records with several key players returning with abundant experience. On the volleyball court, the Lady Wolverines are once again preparing to be league title contenders. In addition, field hockey honed their skills to deliver a terrific season last year and the team has the fortitude to climb even further in the league and CIF standings. With several starters returning, look for these two programs to have memorable fall seasons. ~ Chris Carter, Athletic Director

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Real Estate Matters

Three Things to Get the Highest Sales Price by SCOTT VOAK

T

here are three things you and your agent can do to put you well onto the path to getting the highest sales price for your home in today’s environment. They aren’t necessarily easy or fun, but skimping on these can cost you money. 1. Use professionals to prepare your home. This means seeking the guidance of interior designers and, if necessary, stagers to help with the inside of your home. Fresh paint and flooring can do wonders for your home, but so can some updated furniture. For the outside, have your agent recommend a gardening service and focus on the front of the home where the first impression is made. Power washing or repainting can make a huge difference, especially if you haven’t done it in more than six or seven years. 2. Use professionals to present your home. This means don’t let your agent whip out their iPhone to take the photos. Pay a professional photographer to do it right. And if you are looking for top dollar from your home, use real video to create a tour that presents your home to buyers the way you want it to be presented. The old trick of panning over photos to make it look like a video with bad guitar music in the background is outdated and shows that you or your agent aren’t investing in the sale. 3. Time it right. No, I’m not talking about selling during the summer and avoiding the holidays (although that is pretty sound advice). I’m talking

about giving yourself enough time to get full exposure when you put the house on the market. Agents who sell houses in under a week are doing a great job for themselves (they don’t have to work as long), but not for their clients. Make sure the house is on the market and advertised in more places than just the MLS. Wait a couple of days to begin showings and then try and create an auction atmosphere. You want multiple offers to get the highest price for all your hard work preparing your home. ¢
