It’s a Miracle!

F

Derrick Breaux Publisher

or the better part of last year, our two youngest kids (9 and 10 years old) have been asking for pet hamsters. My wife and I had several conversations about it and ultimately decided that we would succumb to the request. After all, isn’t owning and taking care of hamsters part of the magical childhood experience? Isn’t it supposed to teach responsibility – and all of that other stuff that kids need to learn the hard way? So, a couple of days before Christmas, my wife headed to the pet store and came home with, not one, but two male Roborovski hamsters (the smallest of the dwarf hamsters). I have to admit, the little guys are very cute. Needless to say, they were the hit of the gift exchange. Fast Forward 15 Days. My daughter had a friend over for a play date. All of a sudden, I heard high pitched shrieks and screams (which aren’t that uncommon during these play dates) coming from upstairs followed by the inevitable rumbling of footsteps running down the stairs. Both girls were screaming at the top of their lungs, “The boy hamster is having babies! How can a boy hamster have babies? Oh my goodness. What should we do? What should we do?” Chuckling and with a bit of a dismissive attitude, I let them know that this was literally impossible. However, upon further observation, I realized that the impossible had in fact happened. It was a miracle! The “boy” hamster was definitely giving birth – not to one baby, but to a litter of six little hamsters. The Breaux household went into immediate lockdown. Chaos had officially set in. Once word of the miracle hit the streets, parents and other friends were quickly en route to check out the new little guys. There were even talks of live hamster cams. Life as we know it would clearly not be the same. As family and friends gathered to see the modern day miracle, I immediately began consulting with Google (knower of all things) to try to figure out how this could have happened. Google responded by letting me know that the gestation period for ‘Robo’ hamsters is about 22 days. This meant that the “boy” hamster was pregnant when we purchased her. This information prompted additional questions. I put more intense pressure on Google to get to the bottom of the mystery. Is the other hamster also a female? If not, should we separate them? Google was a bit indecisive in this area, so we ultimately decided to move the hamster of unknown sex into its own cage the next day, especially once we realized that the mother had already exiled it into a distant corner of the cage. It seemed like the right thing to do. Fast Forward 21 Days. Since Google had instructed us not to mess with the baby hamsters, we merely observed for several weeks while contacting friends who might be interested in adopting some of the critters. The hamster cam idea had also been overridden because we couldn’t quite figure out how to make it work (code phrase for “I was lazy”). The baby hamsters were now weaned from the mother and running around. They were as cute as you can imagine. Control of the Breaux household had now been regained. Fast Forward One More Day. I received an unexpected text message from my wife, “Our boy hamster (I can’t repeat all of her words) just had SIX MORE BABIES!” I realized we had officially lost control once again – in fact, it seems we were never in control after all. Talks of hamster cams resumed. Visitors stopping by to see the new miracle babies stepped up to an all-time high. We did Facebook posts. We hit the phones. Desperate emails were sent out. We needed more people to adopt more hamsters! At the end of all of the excitement, there are two things that I am now certain of. For starters, the mother hamster is officially not a boy. Additionally, the other original hamster is definitely not a girl. Other than that, all I can do is enjoy the chaos and laugh.

HOPPORTUNITY KNOCKS BREWERS NOW PICK HOPS IN JULIAN LIKE THE GENERAL PUBLIC PICKS APPLES by AMY LEHRER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

A

fter retiring, Phillip Warren discovered hops growing outside Julian, which was probably originally cultivated by gold miners. He named it “Julian Gold” and currently grows it and other varieties at Hopportunity Farm. He brews in his garage, experimenting with different ingredients to create simple to complex flavors. Knowing the brewing process allows him to share techniques, failures, and successes with other brewers. His original dream was to grow and sell hops to local breweries, but tending plants, picking hops, sending samples to the lab for alpha acid testing, and transporting hops to breweries cost more than he could earn. His wife developed the solution of having brewers pick their own hops like tourists pick Julian apples. Phillip elaborated, “Now people can come up, pick their own hops for brewing, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Julian area.” Those interested in picking hops at Hopportunity Farm should email Phillip at pwarren@san.rr.com. He sends periodic updates as the harvest draws close, usually late July through September. A San Diego native, Phillip attended San Diego High School and SDSU before serving three years in the naval air. He then completed his teaching degree at SDSU and met his future wife, Ellen Wier. They moved to North County to teach and bought their current PQ house using Phillip’s GI Bill. Phillip explained, “My inspiration to teach came from my mom, who thought I would be an excellent teacher because of my patience and creativity.” Phillip enjoyed his 33-year PUSD career teaching mostly sixth grade and coaching track and field and cross country. One of his coaching goals was to inspire young students to run. He and the San Diego North Rotary Club developed a cross country meet that involved elementary schools. This past November they jointly held their 27th annual cross country meet at Mt. Carmel. “Every year we have over 600 kids from third through eighth grade enter the race, representing 10 to 15 different schools,” informed Phillip. The Warrens' boys, Bailey and Scott, attended Mt. Carmel High School. Bailey now works as a carpenter in the remodeling industry, and Scott, a MCHS marching band participant, pursues music along with working full time. Name: For fun, Phillip and Ellen attend SDSU Profession: basketball and football games and spend Community: time camping in the Sierras and at local Hobbies: beaches, mountains, and deserts. They’ve Favorite Local Spot: also discovered scuba diving and have explored the underwater world in Hawaii, Cozumel, and La Paz. ¢

Mt. Carmel Dance Troupe Excels HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION TAKE TEAM TO NATIONALS

T

he Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS) Dance Troupe had a busy and successful competition season this year. In a total of five regional competitions and two national competitions, the team prepared routines in contemporary jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and character dance categories, and took home first place in the Small Dance division at regionals in February. The team also recently represented MCHS at the WCE and USA National competitions in March. As a year-round dance team, the MCHS Dance Troupe gets little time to rest. However, their busy schedule doesn’t get in their way and it shows – the team qualified all four of their routines into the championship division for Nationals. Coach Laurel Iannazzi explained, “Our school district has some of the best dance teams in Southern California and the talent has gone through the roof in the past few years. The girls are aware of this and better themselves by taking classes and improving beyond where they were in the years before. I am most proud of how they all strive and work towards the same goals. Everyone is always on the same page and in a team environment. The girls’ energy, will to build one another up, and determination to improve each week are very admirable.” Upcoming events for the dance troupe include participation in the Poway Unified School District Dance Festival on April 30 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA). They also will be holding their 2015-2016 dance class and dance troupe auditions on May 19 and May 21, and perform in their spring dance concert on June 4 and 5 at the PCPA. As part of this year’s 20th Annual PQ Fiesta, your PQ Town Council is very pleased to announce the return of the PQ school spirit booth. At last year’s booth our community donated $633, and the PQ Town Council matched $118 for donors wearing school logo apparel and donated a $500 grand prize to the school with the most tickets. That’s $1,251 that our 12 local PQ schools received after last year’s event!

Look for the booth near the main stage at the Fiesta. You’ll see all 12 PQ schools’ logo shirts and 12 ticket containers set up. Donate $1 for one ticket and drop that ticket into your school’s container. Show your school spirit by wearing your school logo shirt when you make your donation and earn a $1 matching donation. This year, you can also donate via PayPal any time between April 1 and May 4. When it’s over, we’ll total the donations received by each school at the booth and via PayPal and start writing checks. Additionally, the Town Council will donate a $500 grand prize to the school with the most donations as a ratio of its student population. A huge thanks to 92129 Magazine for helping us get you fired up for the big day. If you haven’t yet, make sure you take a look at the wonderful spread in this issue about the rest of the Fiesta events. A PROBLEM-SOLVER For Senior Annelise Morgan, Nothing Can Stop Her Drive by LINDA FRABL | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

nnelise Morgan is a National AP Scholar with a 4.41 GPA at Mt. Carmel High School, and she's looking forward to her future. She asserted, “I greatly enjoy problem-solving and no matter what field I end up in, it is my goal to be able to make a positive, tangible impact on the world.” Although she is a fan of history and proclaimed, “I love examining the complexity of ancient cultures,” Annelise is also a math whiz, and even completed a Multivariable Calculus class through the UCSD Extension.

To achieve her recent Girl Scout Gold Award, Annelise combined her passion for math with her problem-solving skills. She explained, “I established a lending library of graphing calculators at my school for students in upper level math courses. This prevents a lack of financial resources from inhibiting students from taking these classes.” There are now 20 graphing calculators available for use in her school’s library, and Annelise even gave presentations at numerous other schools, encouraging them to establish a similar program.

In addition to Girl Scouts, Annelise is also engaged in many other impressive clubs. For the past two years she has been the president of the National Honor Society, has been on her School Site Council (determining which programs the school funds will be used for), and is the co-president of the Interact Club (organizing community service events, including an annual fundraiser that pays for the education of a child in Kenya). She has also been selected to be in the Fraternity for Academic and Civic Excellence, is a member of the California Scholarship Federation, and received the Wellesley Book Award for outstanding academic achievement and participation in school and community events. Athletic-minded Annelise has even proven herself in the areas of basketball and gymnastics. Annelise stated, “These two very different sports really appeal to different aspects of my personality.” Annelise is now in her fourth year of playing basketball on her high school team, which placed second at CIFs. As for gymnastics, Annelise has been competing since age three, and is the team captain for her varsity team. Annelise has broken her bones five different times, but that hasn’t stopped her drive for reaching new heights – literally! Annelise admitted, “When I want to relax, I take aerial circus classes and spin around on silks attached to the ceiling.” What a fearless Student Star! ¢

92129 Native Represents United States CARINA DECK NAMED TO USPA INTERCOLLEGIATE NATIONAL TEAM

R

ancho Peñasquitos native Carina Deck was chosen as one of four athletes to represent the U.S. on the United States Polo Association (USPA) Intercollegiate National Team for a recent match against a British intercollegiate polo team. Four athletes from all over the country were chosen to compete in the match which occured before the Townsend International Challenge Cup in March. As the only woman on the team, Carina was very proud to be selected and to be able to contribute her strong riding experience. “I was very excited to find out that I was chosen to represent the USA!” she explained. Carina has been riding horses since she was seven years old and grew up competing in jumping and gymkhana at Poway Valley Riders Association. “I learned about polo when I was 15 and a friend convinced me I should try it,” she reflected. “The mentoring and coaching I received from Russ Sheldon and Billy Sheldon got me hooked on the sport.” Carina played at the high school level and eventually on the womens varsity polo team at Oregon State University (OSU). She has been the OSU womens varsity team captain for the past three years. After graduating from OSU, Carina will attend Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy. While she admittedly doesn’t plan to pursue a career in professional polo, Carina plans to continue playing the sport. “I know polo will always be a big part of my life. I hope to continue playing and own a string of polo ponies.” 

education autism preschool teacher for Poway Unified School District at Stone Ranch Elementary. “I get to experience with families a major life moment – their child’s first school experience,” she described. “Each day is never the same. It’s rewarding to see how fast they change and grow in such a short amount of time.” Ricky is the oldest son and a sophomore at Westview High School. He enjoys lacrosse and helps coach Pop Warner football. He’s enrolled in the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and has recently taken up longboarding. Tyler is in sixth grade at Mesa Verde Middle School. He also plays Pop Warner football, as well as Tiger Lacrosse, and loves the beach. Spencer (because he’s just four) thinks he’s capable of doing what his brothers do. He’s always on the go with a story to tell. Stephaine further supports education as president of the Westview Foundation. The nonprofit raises funds to bridge the gap between the increasing costs of education and lower-than-average funds from state and district levels. They’ve recently upgraded technology in the classroom and increased opportunities for STEM curriculum. The Hudson family not only places importance on staying active but also on kindness and being grateful. “It’s important to remember how blessed we are,” shared Stephaine. “We teach our boys to give more than they receive and to be kind and respectful to all.” Like a mirror to her classroom, her own children are also growing up fast. In 2017, each child will celebrate scholastic milestones within 24 hours: kindergarten graduation, eighth grade promotion, and high school graduation. At home, the Hudsons like to watch sports and reality shows together. They travel – with a special fondness for ski weeks in Mammoth. Stephaine values her family togetherness and added, “It’s important to prepare kids for life – not just for today.” ¢

Celebrating Cultural Diversity

RPLL WELCOMES SOUTH KOREAN TEAM TO SAN DIEGO FOR SOME BASEBALL

T

he Rancho Peñasquitos Little League (RPLL) Junior team recently hosted a friendly game of baseball against the South Korean National team. As South Korea took home the 2014 Little League World Series title last year, there was a sense of excitement in the air as fans, coaches, and teammates cheered on the players. RPLL emerged victorious this year – however, the score wasn’t the highlight of the day as the community can attest. The game brought out quite a turnout and the charged atmosphere surrounding the field could be felt all the way in the stands. According to attendees and players, highlights of the day included seeing how disciplined the South Korean players were as well as the chanting of encouragement that took place. According to RPLL, the matches are an excellent way for little leaguers to experience international competition and learn about another culture. Gift exchanges take place among teams prior to the game, and each country’s national song is played as well. The South Korean National team has been coming to San Diego for friendly matches with various little league teams across San Diego for years. This year they played a total of nine games against other teams, bringing over 30 players and eight coaches on the trip. When they return to South Korea, the coaches will select 12 players to play in the Little League Asia/Pacific Qualifier. To learn more about the little league games be sure to visit www.rpll.org. 

TIRED OF TUMMY TROUBLE?

Follow Six Simple Steps Toward Better Digestive Health by KAYLAN GRAHAM, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Carmel Valley

Everyone experiences digestive distress from time to time — including diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, or heartburn. While many digestive issues are uncomfortable or embarrassing, they often are not serious and can be eliminated with some simple lifestyle changes. Try these six tips to help your digestive system stay on track.

3. Exercise regularly. Daily physical activity can help your body’s digestive system move things along and eliminate waste. Try walking, cycling, swimming, using an elliptical trainer, or hiking. 4. Maintain a healthy body weight. Extra pounds, especially around the midsection, can make digestive issues such as heartburn, gas, and burping worse.

1. Eat small, frequent meals. Prevent indigestion, bloating, and heartburn by changing how often you eat without increasing your overall calorie intake. Instead of three squares a day, enjoy four to five smaller meals and eat them more slowly. Taking time to eat and chewing food properly makes you feel full, which prevents the overeating that can upset your digestive tract.

5. Eat a balanced diet. Stay away from fried, greasy foods that are hard to digest, while making sure you include fiber-rich foods, which are important for overall digestive health. Fill your plate with foods like cherries, grapes, crunchy bell peppers, beans, whole grains, and nuts. Add fish to your list of healthy foods as well. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish can improve digestive issues by stabilizing cell walls to reduce inflammation. Probioticcontaining foods such as yogurt and kefir contain good bacteria that can crowd out any bad bacteria lurking in your gut.

2. Drink plenty of water. Water helps your body flush waste and toxins, and prevents constipation. Water needs vary by individual, depending on numerous factors such as activity level, geographic location, and temperature. If you have questions about how much water you need per day, check with your doctor. At the same time, limit alcohol, which interferes with acid secretion and nutrient absorption. Too much alcohol can contribute to heartburn, diarrhea, and liver issues.

6. Manage your stress level. A presentation can cause “butterflies in your stomach” or a sad experience is “gut-wrenching” because your brain has a direct impact on your stomach. Your digestive tract is controlled by a complex system of about 100 million nerves that starts in the brain and ends in the gut, so your emotions cause chemical and physical responses in the body that can result in pain and discomfort. If ongoing stress is an issue for you, try meditation or other relaxation techniques and make sure to get enough sleep.

Kaylan Graham, M.D., is an internal medicine physician at Scripps Clinic in Carmel Valley. Dr. Graham provides comprehensive primary care with special interest in preventive medicine and weight management..

When should you see your doctor? Sometimes an upset stomach or chronic heartburn can be signs of a more serious condition, such as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, or gallstones. Contact your primary care doctor if digestive issues interfere with your daily life. Seek immediate medical help if you have problems swallowing, bloody or black vomit or stool, abdominal pain, or have unexplained weight loss. 

Looking for a new doctor? To find a Scripps physician near you call 858-256-7559 or visit www.scripps.org/92129. 30 • 92129Magazine.com • April | May 2015

BMMS Hosts Family & Safety Month

The Black Mountain Middle School (BMMS) PTSA recently hosted Family & Safety Month through the months of February and March. The event was comprised of educational classes and presentations for both students and parents. Presentations included the ASHI Child and Babysitting Training which provided training for 11 to 18-year-olds and focused on supervising, caring for, and keeping children and infants safe in babysitting settings. Also included were classes from the American Heart Association on CPR and First Aid, one for children which provided attendees with a participation card, and other for those 12 and up which provided a two-year certification. There was also a cyber safety presentation from Jon Moffat with Cyber Education Consulting which focused on internet safety and teaching parents about managing digital reputations, cyber-bullying, and social networking. PTSA President Josie Burye explained, “The best part is hearing how grateful students and parents are for the classes and presentations our PTSA is offering and having them ask for more. It tells us we are on the right track in filling a need in our community.” For more information visit www.bmmsptsa.com.

Team Resilient Rina Fights for a Cure

Local parents Keith and Marianne Sy and their children Rina and Patrick are Team Resilient Rina. Rina Sy was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Philadelphia Chromosome, a rare and aggressive form of leukemia, in May 2013. She underwent a bone marrow transplant with the help of her little brother Patrick and has since been in remission for one and a half years. She is currently thriving in first grade at Park Village Elementary. Inspired by their children, Keith and Marianne decided to train for the San Diego International Triathlon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) through Team in Training (TNT). Keith and Marianne explained, “We were so focused on Rina’s survival and Patrick’s ability to thrive during treatment that we as parents and caregivers were unable to take care of ourselves. We are training for this event to reclaim our physical and emotional health while continuing to raise funds to find a cure. 2015 is our year to reclaim our lives and show cancer that it does not have our family!” Their fundraising goal is $6,000. A MESSAGE FROM 20TH ANNIVERSARY FIESTA 2015 CHAIR, DARSHANA PATEL Calling all PQ enthusiasts!

Theme

The 20th Annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos is primed and ready to launch in just about one month! We have so many wonderful activities planned for Fiesta day, starting with the annual PQ5K Fun Run, followed by the first ever PQ Parade, leading into a full day of fun at the Fiesta. Each year, the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council (RPTC), working with our indispensable professional planner Rozanna Zane of Affairz Event Consulting, dedicated community volunteers, and a supportive business community, brings the Fiesta to the heart of PQ. Our 20th Anniversary event stays true to many traditions like the community service awards presentations, children’s performance stage, and free community entertainment. We will continue some newer additions like the PQ5K Fun Run, School Spirit Contest, and the Slow Lane Familia Classic car show. The real excitement surrounding this year’s Fiesta is in the changes. For the first time in recent memory, the Fiesta is being held on the first Saturday in May on May 2. We hope that this switch will allow for more members of our diverse community to enjoy the festivities. We will update some of the carnival rides and include a pony ride! Most significantly, in recognition of 20 years of PQ Fiesta, we will inaugurate the PQ Community Parade – a chance for all of our community groups to have a moment to shine and show their community spirit.

The first task our Fiesta Committee must complete when we convene after the summer break is to agree on the theme for the next Fiesta. This year our committee, comprised of many first-time members, was able to agree on a theme in record time! PQ, Our Playground seemed like a perfectly natural fit to describe our community, our lifestyles, and our vision for the future. We knew that the theme for our 20th Anniversary Fiesta needed to capture the essence of our community and the significance of this milestone event. PQ, Our Playground says it all. Our theme is memorialized in the Art Contest we hold to choose our annual Fiesta image. Read more about the contest details below.

ELECTIONS One of the many exciting things going on at the Town Council’s booth will be the annual election of Town Council representatives. The Town Council is made up of elected and appointed volunteers from eight districts laid out to coincide with the elementary school boundaries in PQ. Every year there is at least one elected position open in every district.

Run!

The Town Council is always looking for capable new members to infuse fresh energy, ideas, and perspectives, so if you think that sounds like you, get your name on the ballot. Fill out a candidate application online at www.rpcouncil.com/join. The deadline is April 19 so don’t delay!

Vote!

You say your plate is already full? We still need you to stop by the Fiesta 2015 elections ballot station in the Town Council booth and cast your vote. Active participation in our community is the basis for all positive growth. Whether it is by running or voting, our community needs to hear from you!

40 • 92129Magazine.com • April | May 2015

Don’t miss this chance to be part of PQ history – join your friends and nearly 15,000 other Peñasquitosians in celebrating at our Rancho Peñasquitos showcase event. There is surely going to be a “playground” at the Fiesta to suit you, whether it’s the musical entertainment, carnival rides, food tasting, car show, children’s performances, a pony ride, or a special visit with the San Diego Padres Friar and the Pad Squad! The Friar will be with us all day, even on the main stage, and will have giveaways for our crowds in their booth. For the most up-to-date information regarding the Fiesta and RPTC, please visit our website at www.rpcouncil.com.

PARADE To make our 20th Anniversary Fiesta extra-special, our Fiesta Committee has decided to try something new this year: a community parade. We are looking forward to participation from community groups, schools, teams, scouts, block parties, clubs, and other PQ-themed organizations who wish to express community spirit. With the parade we are offering another free local event that will allow the diversity of our community to shine! Our parade route is set to start at Mount Carmel High School, travel down Carmel Mountain Rd. going past one end of our Fiesta on Black Mountain Rd., turn the corner at Twin Trails, and end at Sundance Elementary School. The parade route is about one mile and all downhill – we have made it as easy as possible to participate and welcome all ages. Our grand marshal for our inaugural PQ Community Parade will be the San Diego Padres Friar. We think the Friar is an ideal fit with our theme, PQ, Our Playground, and will keep the crowds in a festive mood for our Fiesta Day. Does this sound as irresistible to you as it does to us? It’s not too late to sign up your group to participate – visit our website for details.

SPONSORS Each year, the Town Council offers Fiesta sponsorship opportunities for local businesses, organizations, and residents. By choosing to sponsor the Fiesta, these exemplary organizations have shown their dedication to our community. The profits from the Fiesta return directly to the community in the form of community grants, local events, and improvements in our community. This year the Town Council would like to highlight Smart Solar and Slow Lane Familia as our neighborhood sponsors, Arch Health Partners as a community partner, and San Diego County Credit Union as our premier sponsor. This year the Council is pleased to work with Smart Solar Construction as a neighborhood sponsor. Smart Solar Construction is a locally owned business whose owners value community. We welcome Smart Solar to our business community and appreciate their sponsorship. Slow Lane Familia is helping make new Fiesta traditions! Once again, Slow Lane Familia is a neighborhood sponsor to ensure that the 20th Anniversary event showcases their signature vintage car collection. Slow Lane Familia is a local, nonprofit, classic car club whose members own and show pre-1966 American-made cars. This year the proceeds from the car show entry fee will go directly to the community in the form of grants to deserving local organizations. Come check out the cars and cast a vote for the crowd favorite trophy. Get there early to see the parade and watch these custom rides roll down Carmel Mountain Road. For more information on participating in the car show or the parade call Rick Duran at 858-361-0582 or email duranfive@yahoo.com. The 20th Anniversary Fiesta and the Town Council welcome Arch Health Partners to PQ. Arch Health Partners is showing how much they care for our community though a community sponsorship. The San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) is proudly supporting PQ through its premier sponsorship of our Fiesta for a second year in a row. The premier sponsorship package includes both main stage and banner district sponsor levels. Through SDCCU’s continued support of the Fiesta and the banner district, they are proving that people really do come first. Another first-time neighborhood sponsor is Mathnasium located in the Plaza Rancho Peñasquitos shopping center. Is your organization interested in showing its support for our community? Additional sponsorship opportunities are still available. Would you like to have a full-page, half-page, or business card-size advertisement in our 20th Anniversary Fiesta Program? It’s not too late. Please visit email fiesta.rptc@gmail.com to lock it in.

DONORS The Town Council would not be able to bring the ever-growing and vibrant Fiesta de los Peñasquitos to our community each year without the very generous in-kind contributions from our local business community. This year, we have received significant donation support from 92129 Magazine of ZCode Media, Family Magazine, and Allies Party Rentals. Additionally, our local governments provide essential grant support through County Supervisor Dave Roberts and the County of San Diego Community Enhancement Program, as well as the City of San Diego Creative Communities San Diego Program supplemented with additional funding from District 5 City Councilman Mark Kersey and District 6 City Councilman Chris Cate. We sincerely express our gratitude for their continued community support.

FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE ART CONTEST Every year fourth and fifth graders living in Rancho Peñasquitos are invited to draw or paint a picture that represents the Fiesta theme. We can’t wait to see what our local student artists will do with this year’s theme, PQ, Our Playground. The winning student’s artwork will be featured on all Fiesta t-shirts, posters, program covers, and other advertisements.

SCHOOL SPIRIT BOOTH We are very pleased to announce the return of the PQ school spirit booth. At last year’s booth, our community donated $633, and the PQ Town Council matched $118 for donors wearing school logo apparel and donated a $500 grand prize for the school with the most tickets as a ratio of its student population. That’s a total of $1,251 that our 12 local PQ schools received after last year’s event! Remember that every dollar donated will go directly back to the schools, so don’t forget to wear your school shirt and stop by the booth again this year with a few bucks for your alma mater. For more information on the School Spirit Booth check out the Town Council column “What’s New in PQ?” in this issue, peruse the information at www.rpcouncil.com, or email education.rptc@gmail.com.

COMMUNITY AWARDS Each year the Town Council is proud to recognize the community service contributions of 12 local students, one adult volunteer, and one business or organization. Winners of these community awards will be invited to participate in a Fiesta ceremony at which they will be publicly recognized by the community, the Town Council, and our local elected officials. Twelve outstanding students — one from each of our 12 PQ public schools — are recognized for their community service efforts with Youth Community Service awards. Fifth and eighth grade winners are nominated by their schools. At the high school level, graduating seniors can apply for this $500 scholarship directly, rather than through a school nomination process. For more information email education.rptc@gmail. com or go to your high school’s counseling office. Additionally, the Town Council is accepting nominations until April 20 for the Volunteer of the Year award and the Business/Organization of the Year award. Nominations must be submitted via online nomination on the Town Council website. The name of the Volunteer of the Year will be added to the engraved plaque installed at Hilltop Park and the Business of the Year will be featured for a full year on the Town Council website. If you know a person, organization, or business that has worked hard to make a positive impact in our community, submit your nomination today!

PQ5K FUN RUN Everything about the annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos is fun. Why not begin the day with a Fun Run? The PQ5K Fun Run is a free community event, 3.1 miles of easy jogging, running, or strolling through our beautiful Peñasquitos neighborhoods. The fun begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, in the parking lot at the LDS church located at 12835 Black Mountain Rd. Pre-register online at www.pq5kfunrun. org or come early on the day of the run and register on site. Participants will receive racing bibs and leave the staging area in staggered groups. You'll see all ages and lots of friendly faces along the way. The run ends at another church parking lot, located at 14191 Camino del Sur. There, children under 12 who finish the course will receive a victory medal and can tour one of our local fire engines. All participants will be treated to a free pancake breakfast complete with fresh orange juice. Shuttles will be available to take runners back to their cars. Now in its eighth year, this year's fun run promises to be bigger than ever, with the same familyfriendly environment that has made the event a hit in the past. Join us for a great start to a fabulous Fiesta day. 

With prime locations near the ocean, parks, and campgrounds, North County San Diego boasts a wide variety of summer camps for children and teens of all ages and interests for the artist, athlete, comedian, or animal lover in the family. We invite you to read along and discover the adventure awaiting you.

DANCEOLOGY PERFORMING ARTS CAMPUS

G

et into a new routine this summer with a fun-filled dance camp at Danceology Performing Arts Campus! Danceology offers a broad variety of camps and classes throughout the eight-week summer session for young boys and girls of all experience levels. “The camps are engaging atmospheres designed to build the foundation and love of dance while cultivating a personal relationship with the family and the student,” explained Danceology Owner Nicole Lucia. “We assess each dancer’s individual level and commitment and recommend classes specially designed for your child’s need.” Programs include five different tiny tot camps, intermediate workshops, and a beginning cheer/hip hop camp for ages 7 to 10. There are also boys-only hip hop and tap classes, as well as an adaptive dance class for young girls with special needs – the only local dance studio to offer such a program. Two important parts of the Danceology experience are the welcoming environment and high quality of instruction. Instructors are CPR-certified and always on-hand to guide young dancers. The emphasis on nurturing and confidence-building has proven to have incredible results. Over the years, Danceology students have accepted college scholarships and developed professional careers in the industry. “Since we’ve been open for over a decade, we’ve become experts in the field of dance,” said Nicole. “We’ve found our niche in creating that love and passion for performance and dance at a young age.” Sabrina Roux, a proud Danceology parent, enthusiastically attested to the program’s success. “We treasure every summer spent at Danceology,” she shared. “My daughter would not be as poised and well-rounded of a dancer today without having started in one of Danceology’s dance camps.” Find out more at www.danceology.biz. 

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS photo by Robert Benson

O

wner/Director of Outpost Summer Camps Stuart Jones grew up with an outdoor summer camp, Tom Sawyer Camps, when he was younger. “We hiked, rode horses, made forts, sang songs, performed skits, got muddy, and learned how to make and keep friends with both the campers and counselors,” he explained. He spent 14 summers there as a camper, counselor, and director, and then decided to start his own venture, Outpost Summer Camps in 2001. Outpost Summer Camps offers three

traditional camp programs to children between the ages of 3 and 14, serving Poway and surrounding areas. According to Stuart, “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Three-week long sessions are what make Outpost Summer Camps unique. Stuart explained, “In this amount of time children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends. Children are able to form genuine relationships while at camp.” Another hallmark of the camp’s uniqueness is the door-to-door transportation. Campers are picked up at their homes each morning, driven to camp, and dropped off at the end of the day. “Our families often tell us that the ride to and from camp, full of songs and adventure, is one of their child’s favorite parts of the Outpost camp day,” Stuart explained. “Our drivers are also our counselors and that makes the camp experience something special and unique, as kids are used to being driven around by their parents.” For more information about Outpost Summer Camps visit www.outpostsummercamps.com 

BEAUTY

Discover Flora, Fauna, and Fun at Local Botanical Gardens by LAINEY KRAL

W

ith the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, spring is the perfect time to explore the natural beauty in our backyard. San Diego is home to a varied collection of botanical gardens, bringing together native plant life with blooms from around the world. From orchids and butterflies to cacti and succulents, our local botanical gardens have a special something to share with everyone in the family.

Formerly known as the Quail Botanical Gardens, the San Diego Botanic Garden has been a colorful fixture in Encinitas for over 50 years. The sprawling garden features trees, flowers, and other plants from all over the world. Visitors can journey from the dragon tree grove of the Canary Islands to the cork oak trees and irises of the Mediterranean – or learn more about local history along the Native Plants and Native People Trail. Kids will enjoy the Hamilton Children’s Garden with a mountain stream, elephant foot tree forest, and tree house to explore. Nearby is the Bird and Butterfly garden, filled with flowers planted especially to attract our feathered and fluttering friends. Visit the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens to experience a unique blend of art and nature. With the goal to “Bring Together People, Nature, and Art,” the gardens showcase a stunning range of international and local plants as well as unique artistic pieces integrated into the garden layout. including sculptures, walkways, and walls created by talented local artisans. The site also features the California Natives Garden, Children’s Garden, and Antique Rose Collection along with a variety of culinary and medicinal herbs. One of San Diego’s best-preserved cultural landmarks also hosts many of the city’s horticultural treasures. Balboa Park is home to over a dozen beautiful gardens, including the Casa del Rey Moro Garden, the Children’s Ethnobotany Garden, the Japanese Friendship Garden, and the Rose Garden. And overlooking the Lily Pond and Lagoon is the park’s iconic Botanical Building. The impressive lathwork structure – one of the largest of its kind – houses over 2,000 cycads, ferns, orchids, and more. A touch-and-smell garden lets visitors interact more closely with chocolate mint, lemon mint, and other unusually aromatic plants. Be sure to point out the carnivorous pitcher plants and Venus fly traps to the kids! 

N

ow that the lovely weather has reminded you of the arrival of spring, there are a few ideas worth considering besides spring cleaning. We are all aware that increasing energy costs, legislation, decommission of San Onofre (estimated at $4.4 billion), and warming weather trends are causing substantial increases in residential utility rates. And we well recall how much our utility bills can be at the height of the summer. However, as a homeowner you can empower yourself by taking advantage of programs available in San Diego. The Home Energy Renovation Opportunity Program (HERO) allows homeowners to apply for low-cost loans making energyefficient, renewable energy products more affordable. HERO provides 100% financing at low interest rates, flexible payment terms, and repayments through your property taxes. The HERO

WITH 38 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY, NATURAL ENERGY HAS INSTALLED MORE SOLAR THAN ALL OTHER LOCAL COMPANIES COMBINED loan stays with the property even if it is sold and payments may be tax deductible, lowering the effective interest rate. Now that you have empowered yourself, consider solar energy for your home. Why all the interest in solar? Solar panels are popping up on roofs all over the neighborhood. What do your neighbors know that you don’t? It is undeniable that we all pay the proverbial sunshine tax to live in beautiful San Diego. Why not take advantage of such an abundant, clean, renewable energy source? Installations continue to boom and solar is more affordable than ever. According to Solar Energy Industries Association, (SEIA) this is because “since the third quarter of 2010, the average price of a photovoltaic (PV) panel has dropped by 63%.” Your neighbors also know that the federal solar tax credits end next year, and in addition to the HERO program, there are attractive finance and leasing programs with no money down for solar installations. They may also know that Natural Energy is the leading company in San Diego for solar. With 38 years in the industry, Natural Energy has installed more solar than all other local companies combined and offers solar PV systems made right here in the United States. Consider Natural Energy for your solar energy needs and go solar now! ¢ 54 • 92129Magazine.com • April | May 2015

New Trails for Local Park

FIVE MILES ADDED TO BLACK MOUNTAIN OPEN SPACE PARK

B

lack Mountain Open Space Park (BMOS) recently added five miles of new trails to allow for a more user-friendly hiking experience through the addition of at-grade trails and loop trail options. The project seeks to involve the Rancho Peñasquitos community through Community Trail Build Day events which allow local residents to assist in the trail building efforts. The recent event saw 125 volunteers including boy scouts, high school students, and families who all came out to help contribute their time and energy to the project. San Diego Mountain Biking Association (SDMBA) liasion to BMOS and Citizen Advisory Committee Chairperson Rod Simmons commented, “The pride displayed by our volunteers in creating something of value for everyone within the community was extremely impressive.” Due to his engagement in the new trails plan from its earliest stages, Rod understands the importance of community involvement in the project. He explained, “The ranger staff for Black Mountain are also responsible for several other park locations and they can’t possibly be everywhere at once. We depend on the community to provide stewardship within the open space parks through their presence. We needed to reach out to the community and enable others to share in the passion held by SDMBA.” Current construction of trails is on hold during gnatcatcher nesting season. SDMBA provides 2,000-3,000 hours a year to maintain trails with San Diego County through volunteer labor. For more information on trail progress and how to get involved visit www.sdmba.com. 

CHRIS CATE IS COMMITTED TO PUBLIC SERVICE THROUGH POLITICS by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

T

here is no doubt when it comes to Chris Cate’s commitment – the city councilmember serves his District 6 constituents with tireless work and unwavering efforts. “Safe neighborhoods, well-paved streets, good-paying jobs, and a high quality of life are my priorities,” Chris shared. Chris’s commitment to politics and public policy began during his college years at University of San Diego. “Sept. 11, 2001 was the pivotal point in my life when I made the decision to get politically involved,” he said. A native of San Diego, his parents instilled the value of hard work combined with public service – his father is a 20-plus-year veteran of the California Highway Patrol and his mother worked for the United States Postal Service. Prior to his council seat today, Chris has played a variety of important roles in local politics. He was the vice president of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association, where he worked for fiscal responsibility and accountability in the cities and public agencies. His contributions included the analysis of Proposition B, which ultimately led to a ballot initiative saving taxpayers $1 billion over the next 30 years. Chris also established the Neighborhoods First Coalition, a group of local representatives who represent the concerns and issues of their neighborhoods in District 6. Today, Chris works closely with the neighboring District 5 since Rancho Peñasquitos was split in San Diego’s redistricting process. “I am unwavering with my promise to do everything in my

power to improve the quality of life for Park Village,” Chris acknowledged. For Chris, this includes retaining police officers, maintaining city infrastructure, advocating for small businesses, increasing jobs, and working collaboratively with public agencies serving San Diegans. Chris has been recognized multiple times for his commitment to San Diego. His list of awards include Board Member of the Year from the Asian Business Association, Taxpayer Champion of the Year from the San Diego Taxpayer Association, and recipient of the Filipino American Community Empower Luminary Award, among others. Beyond San Diego, Chris has also volunteered for the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, helping to build communities to end poverty, and traveled to the Philippines to help build homes for families in need. With all the service work, Chris carves out a little time to enjoy the fruits of his labor in his neighborhoods. He enjoys playing basketball, spending time with his family, and trying new restaurants with his fiancé, Maria. ¢

he Rancho Peñasquitos Library recently celebrated the Chinese Lunar New Year with festivities for all ages. The event kicked off with a lion dance performed by the Southern Sea Lion Dance Troupe, complete with vibrant dancing and costumes to the beat of drums, gongs, and cymbals. After the dance, the troupe wowed the audience with a martial arts exhibition. The library’s Drama Club, led by volunteer high school student Shreya Huilgol, presented a story of Chinese New Year for the event’s participants. The story explained the meaning and symbols behind the festivities, and told of a horrible demon beast named Nian who could be scared away with loud noises, the color red, and strange creatures. After the various performances, attendees enjoyed delicious refreshments such as Chinese moon cakes, tangerines, and candies. Finally, the day wrapped up with an arts and crafts time which allowed participants to make masks to celebrate the year of the goat, also referred to as the year of the sheep. The Rancho Peñasquitos Library offers many activities such as this throughout the year to celebrate holidays or festive events, but also offers educational activities for the community such as

the S.E.T. Club science-related workshops, homework help every Monday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and Tuesday and Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m., community blood drives, and books clubs, among many others. hen it comes to repairing an existing roof or installing a brand-new roof on a residence, homeowners that hire Top Line Roofing can feel confident they are receiving an honest estimate and that the work will be performed by a professional and courteous crew. “Top Line Roofing works with customers to discover their true needs, to educate them on the roofing issues they face, and to present them with options that work best for their budget and their needs,” stated Wayne Sorensen, Owner of Top Line Roofing. This local full-service roofing company has served San Diego County since 1991, and Wayne is proud to report that much of his business comes from the referrals of satisfied customers. Top Line provides free estimates, and Wayne encourages homeowners to have their roofs evaluated every 18 to 24 months to prevent minor issues from becoming major problems. Another way Top Line sets itself apart from the competition is through its use of the latest technology. Wayne’s truck is equipped with a computer and printer, and in most cases, a typed estimate can be provided on-site. Additionally, digital photographs and iPads are used to show the homeowner the precise roofing problem. “We also use satellite technology to aid in measuring the size, area, and pitch of a roof,” explained Wayne. irdwatching is a popular hobby among millions of Americans, and San Diego County is a perfect place to see a wide and colorful variety of feathered species. According to the San Diego County Bird Atlas, over 500 different species of birds either permanently reside in San Diego County or migrate into and through the area during their annual migration. Wild Birds Unlimited is a specialty hobby store catering to those interested in wild bird feeding and watching. “We are very excited to share the hobby of backyard bird feeding with the residents of San Diego. We are certified bird feeding specialists who can help customers attract the birds [they would like to see] according to their yard, habitat, the time of year, and our specific region,” explained Jerry Martin. He and his wife, Arlene, are co-owners of Wild Birds Unlimited as well as bird enthusiasts who enjoy sharing their love of nature with the community. Jerry and Arlene share the mission of “returning nature to San Diego, one backyard at a time.” Their home is in Rancho Peñasquitos, near the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve.

62 • 92129Magazine.com • April | May 2015

The preserve is one of the largest urban parks in the country, and Jerry and Arlene consider it an extension of their own backyard. Until 20 years ago, central San Diego was still very wild and open, and they would like to bring that wildness back to San Diego one home at a time. To ensure freshness, Wild Birds Unlimited receives weekly deliveries of seed blends that are regionally formulated to attract the birds that live in the San Diego area. According to Jerry, the seed blends sold at Wild Birds Unlimited do not include filler grains such as oats, wheat, corn, and milo. “These fillers increase the price per pound of a mix because they are less attractive to birds and end up on the ground. More than 70% of all wild bird seed sold by big box and mass-marketed stores is filler and is wasted. Because there is no wasted seed, our blends actually end up costing less to use while attracting more of the birds that you want to watch,” stated Jerry. In addition to bird seed, Wild Birds Unlimited also offers bird feeders, houses, and baths, as well as a variety of products related to nature, including cards, stationery, jewelry, art, books, and decorative items.

Wild Birds Unlimited is also committed to connecting San Diegans with nature. “We seek to be an active resource for community interests, providing information and education related to backyard bird feeding and birdwatching. We offer nature talks with local garden groups and educational opportunities with Project Wildlife and SoCal Parrot,” said Jerry. For more information about Wild Birds Unlimited, as well as bird feeding products and educational events, please visit www.wbu.com. 

Kindness Campaign

MESA VERDE MIDDLE SCHOOL HOSTS KIND ASSEMBLY

T

his year, Mesa Verde Middle School (MVMS) modeled their Campaign for Kindness after the film Finding Kind, a powerful account of two women who travel across the country to expose the truth about girl-ongirl crime. MVMS was selected to host a free screening of the film, and the film’s creators, Lauren Parsekian and Molly Thompson, came to visit to help facilitate as well! While the female students at MVMS viewed the film, the male students visited three different stations to learn about the importance of kindness, charity, character values, chivalry, and more. According to MVMS, one station was facilitated by Westview High School peer counselors who organized team building activities with the boys. Another station was led by Scott Farrell, Founder of Chivalry Today educational programs, and the final station was presented by Michael Haynes, former NFL cornerback and hall of famer, who focused on character development and leadership. After the girls finished watching Finding Kind, they were then given the opportunity to reflect on the film and share their thoughts with their peers. Lauren and Molly asked them to write a kind pledge, a kind apology note, and a kind card. When asked to share, several girls stood up in front of the entire gym to express their gratitude and love for their friends, family members, and teachers. MVMS launched its very own Campaign for Kindness this year to help spread the message of kindness around campus. MVMS created a lunch time club for students called Kind Crew, which now boasts 50 members. 

Real Estate Matters

What is a TC Fee and Why Should You Pay It? by SCOTT VOAK

S

elling a home is a complex transaction with dozens of forms. It is hard for an experienced agent to remember every single step and be 100% accurate 100% of the time. Not to mention there are a lot of newer agents who are still feeling their way through a process that can take several transactions to fully understand. This creates a lot of risk for the broker who the agent is working for. There are a lot of ways to make mistakes and create liability. To protect against that, brokers have Transaction Coordinators (TC) that work with their agents to make sure the transaction is handled correctly. The TC earns a fee for every file that successfully closes, typically around $400. So far, no problem, as the broker is requiring the agent to use a TC to help with quality control. The problem begins when the agent turns around and bills you, the client, for the TC. If you are already paying the broker $10,000 or $20,000 to sell your home, why are they hitting you up for an additional $400 to make sure they do it right? Because they can. A listing contract is several pages and some agents try and get you to sign it without looking at it overnight. Buried in the contract will be a line item that you will pay for the TC fee. It shows up in your escrow paperwork as just another line item that you probably won’t question. If the agent does 10 deals a year, they net another $4,000 a year in profit by passing this cost to you.

At Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty, we have forbidden our agents from collecting a TC fee from any client. You are paying us to be your advocate and our duty to you is fiduciary. Slipping an extra fee into your bill is counter to that principle and we won’t allow it. Neither should you. 
