Household Fiscal Year?

W

Derrick Breaux Publisher

hile many businesses use a calendar year for convenient accounting purposes, I’ve come to realize that the vast majority of people actually run their homes similar to a fiscal year basis. Sure, everyone likes to gear up and prepare for the big symbolic New Year celebration, but for most families, Jan. 1 merely marks the halfway point on the annual journey of household responsibility and schedules. Shouldn’t there be a big prize waiting for each of us when we finish the year? A calendar year ending in December doesn’t seem very exciting. Kids go back to school in January – certainly no prize for most of them. Tax season is looming right after the beginning of the new calendar year. Again, not very exciting for most of us. Although technically a new year, everyone is typically still quite involved with trying to get through their fiscal year. What I mean by this is that the end of the year for most families seems to take place in June. That’s right… June is officially the end of our household fiscal year. June is when kids finish school – in fact, many kids graduate or get promoted to the next grade. It is the month that moms and dads are typically limping through the finish line donating their final volunteer hours in the classrooms (I have to admit that I’ve read a few hilarious postings about this in some of my recent social media binges). Spring sports are finishing up. The gift of warm weather is upon us. Summer must be the end-of-year prize! Although we are spoiled in San Diego and blessed with beautiful weather year round, I still love summer. Summer brings freedom for kids – I’m sure some parents may argue that it can also bring boredom. Summer is a time for family vacations, trips to the beach, outside barbeques, walks with the dog, playing outside until sunset, and creating lifelong memories. For my daughter who recently graduated from high school, summer is a time of transition. It marks the end of a huge chapter in her life and the beginning of the rest of her adult life. The start of her new household fiscal year comes with unlimited promise, excitement, uncertainty, exploration, dedication, and nervousness – all wrapped up into a couple of months. Perhaps we should all rethink the traditional New Year celebration concept. What we should all really be celebrating is a Year “End” party (in June). I see the Year End celebration as a festive event where adults get to congratulate each other for actually making it through the year in one piece. The occasion should include high fives, hugs, toasts, and perhaps, some type of victory dance. I definitely think that we might be on to something here. I hope everyone has a great summer!

SUCCESSFUL SEARCH! Neal and Jeanine Fischer Find Long Lost Relatives in Ireland by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

We love that PQ is only seven miles from the beach! Deli Stop, Golden Bagel, Vittorio’s, Rancho Peñasquitos Preserve and looking forward to Rita’s Italian Ice in the Vons Shopping Center!

ccording to Neal Fischer, tracing his Irish roots has been a lifelong dream. He remembers spending time with his big Irish family in Boston and being in the marching band in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. “For years, Neal knew he had family in Ireland, and the graduation of our youngest daughter was the perfect time for a family celebration – one that ended up including family members we found while we were in Ireland,” exclaimed Neal’s wife, Jeanine. However, the search for Neal’s family wasn’t easy. This past May, the Fischer clan went to Ireland, specifically the area of Ballydangan in the county of Roscommon, with the intention of finding Neal’s long lost relatives. With only vague directions to guide them, they searched local cemeteries for clues, and then with cold rain soaking them to the bone, they started knocking on doors. They finally found Neal’s 88-year-old aunt and one of his cousins, Bernard Kelly. “I can’t describe the feeling of sitting there, talking to these people who were family. We went through old documents with them and could almost picture the members of the Kelly family that were listed on a handwritten manifest of a ship that sailed to America more than 100 years ago,” said Neal. He and Jeanine were especially touched to see their daughters sharing stories with their Irish relatives. With Neal’s search culminating in such a successful family reunion, Jeanine is eager to embark on her own ancestor adventure. “Next time, we’ll visit Northern Ireland to discover my side of the family,” revealed Jeanine. She and Neal encourage those interested in finding their ancestral roots to ask questions of known relatives and record as much family history as possible. Locating records, such as birth, marriage and death certificates, and visiting genealogy sites are also great places to start. And if traveling to another country is a part of the search, Jeanine and Neal recommend hiring a guide who is familiar with the local area. When the Fischers are on this side of the pond, they enjoy taking advantage of all that the Rancho Peñasquitos community has to offer. “We’ve lived in PQ for twenty-five years and love the gorgeous canyons and the amazing community,” said Jeanine. She and Neal can often be found exploring Rancho Peñasquitos Canyon, attending services at Peñasquitos Lutheran Church and making the short trip to the local beaches. ¢

his past June, the Rancho Peñasquitos/Mira Mesa Relay for Life took place at Hilltop Park in 92129. With teams coming from all over Mira Mesa and Rancho Peñasquitos, folks walked for twenty-four hours in honor of their loved ones: friends, family, and acquaintances who succumbed to, were currently battling, or survived cancer. The teams raised over $50,000 and all proceeds were donated to the American Cancer Society. As the sun set, the track was lined with luminarias – paper lanterns symbolizing those who have passed and those who survived. The evening featured a touching ceremony with glowsticks, lights and a symbolic walk around the track alongside the luminarias. 

Special to 92129 Magazine

It’s August and things are heating up – and not just with the weather. Your PQ Town Council is ready to embark on this new 2014-2015 term with new members, new leadership, new ideas, and enough energy to make a few solar panels jealous! So with no further ado, introducing your 2014-2015 elected Town Council members: Adobe Bluffs: Canyon View: Deer Canyon: Los Peñasquitos: Park Village: Rolling Hills: Sundance: Sunset Hills:

Kate Glenn Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff and Bill Diehl Alan Gin and Ramesses Surban Kristine Custodio and Randy Arnold Darshana Patel and Steven Tomich Brian Reschke Armand Bryant and Juliette Brockmann Theresa Gonzaga and Melinda Vasquez

At the Town Council’s June meeting, the above elected members voted Melinda Vasquez as president and Kristine Custodio as vice president. Congratulations ladies! We can’t wait to see what you can do. And a huge thank you to our outgoing President Darshana Patel, who did an amazing job over the past two years.

SO WHAT’S IN THE WORKS? • Don’t forget to pick up one of our limited edition Rancho Peñasquitos t-shirts on Aug. 2 at Sienna’s Playgarden Movie Night. Just $10 allows you to model this fashionable apparel and support PQ community grants and scholarships at the same time! • The Town Council’s banner district is alive and kicking, thanks to San Diego County Credit Union graciously extending their sponsorship for another six months! Along with the SDCCU logo, the banners currently feature Voices for Children, a nonprofit that advocates for foster children in the court system. In October, about fifteen banners will highlight the 38th Annual Mt. Carmel Battle of the Bands, which includes a community parade of high school bands from all around Southern California. Our PQ banner district is promoting some wonderful groups, as well as decorating and raising money for our community. • Last but not least, as you get ready to head back to school, don’t forget to check the “For Kids” section of our website for K-12 activities. LEXI DORN EXCELS IN CLASS, ON THE COURT, AND IN THE COMMUNITY by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

I

f a prototype of a teenager could be made, Lexi Dorn may be about the best model. Whether she is in class, on a volleyball court, or serving meals to the homeless, this young woman exemplifies intelligence, athleticism, and altruism. The 16-year-old athlete can most often be found on the volleyball court, both indoor and sand. Lexi began playing in the 7th grade and now plays for the Coast Volleyball Club. Tournaments have taken her across the country from L.A. to Philadelphia and soon across the world as she heads to Europe. Lexi is a bit nervous about her first trip to Europe but is confident in her teammates and coaches. “Perhaps I will get to use some of what I've learned in my three years of taking French,” Lexi added.

Around home in Rancho Peñasquitos, Lexi spends part of her time volunteering. She appreciates the perspective she gains through the experience. “Sometimes you can tell that people are just happy to have someone acknowledge them, make eye contact and smile,” acknowledged Lexi. She has served many local organizations, including Interfaith Community Services and Third Avenue Charitable Organization. This summer, Lexi is looking forward to volunteering at DOOR, where she will spend a week serving in L.A. When asked about her inspiration, Lexi shares on two levels: “In sports, I am inspired by athletes who are giving 100% and look like they are enjoying themselves while they do it,” Lexi stated. “In life, I am inspired by people who are nice to others, intelligent, and inclusive.” Looking forward, Lexi will be attending Cathedral Catholic High School for her 11th grade year. Her family is alumni, and she will be joined by her younger sister, Tori. Lexi plans to maintain the 4.0 GPA from her first two years at Westview High School. Lexi’s stellar resume also includes a few items identifying her as a typical teenager. She recently got her driver’s license and loves going to the movies, playing laser tag, and having water balloon fights. As for her future, “I often wonder what path my life will take and how someone my age can figure out what to do,” Lexi said. She certainly has more than a few options open to her and considers being a teacher and coach as one of the best – just about the perfect way to combine all the things Lexi loves. ¢

Caring for Community Readers

ZCODE MAGAZINES HONORED AS SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

A

ssemblymember Brian Maienschein recently honored us here at ZCode Magazines as the 77th Assembly District’s 2014 Small Business of the Year in recognition of our ongoing commitment to the readers of our community. “ZCode Magazines has found an innovative way to bring people in our community together by showcasing local businesses, events, and residents,” Maienschein said. “I’m proud to recognize ZCode for creating a fun, community-based publication that San Diegans enjoy reading, while helping local small businesses promote themselves.” Launched in 2009, we started with one publication, 92127 Magazine, a reference to the zip code where the magazine was distributed. Since then we have grown to become the publisher of eleven zip code-specific magazines, reaching 185,000 San Diegans. Each magazine highlights unique local businesses, families, students, sports, and community events. ZCode Magazines also provides advice to local businesses on community outreach using social media, email, and custom publishing.

“On behalf of all of us at ZCode Magazines, we are honored to be selected by Assemblymember Maienschein to receive the Small Business of the Year Award,” said Derrick Breaux, Publisher and CEO of ZCode Magazines. “We work hard to serve our readers and the community that we love, and we wouldn’t be successful without them.” A family business, Breaux’s brother, Tyler McElhaney, serves as creative director and COO for our publishing company, located in the Rancho Bernardo area of San Diego. “Maintaining a balance of high quality design and production along with hyper-local stories and features is our biggest goal. Employing local writers, photographers, designers and sales staff reinforces our commitment to the communities of San Diego,” explained McElhaney. Each year, the California Small Business Association asks legislators to nominate a Small Business of the Year from their district that has demonstrated exemplary business ethics and community service. We were presented with a framed certificate from the State Assembly recognizing our outstanding contributions. 

hile San Diegans are no stranger to experiencing wildfire, we are incredibly grateful to have such responsive and fast-acting emergency services in our neighborhoods. In recognition of their work to protect homes during the Bernardo Fire this past May, City Councilman Mark Kersey and the Peñasquitos Emergency Response Council hosted a Thank You BBQ for San Diego’s first responders. Surrounded by food and friends, residents were able to come out and personally thank their first responders for their hard work. Councilman Kersey, San Diego Police Department Chief Shelley Zimmerman, and San Diego Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief Brian Fennessy were all in attendance. If you see a firefighter, police officer, or EMT around your neighborhood, shake their hand and tell them thanks for continuing to keep your neighborhood safe. 

ngie and Matt Aneshansley met at Rolling Hills Elementary when she was teaching and he was volunteering at the time. Angie’s master teacher and now a family friend, Eileen Tebbetts, had introduced them. In 1975, Angie and her family moved to Rancho Peñasquitos while Matt moved from Ohio with his family in 1978. Angie also pointed out, “We grew up in this neighborhood and wanted our children to have the same great experiences we did. We can walk or bike to the fire department,

dog park, library, shopping center, or our elementary, middle, and high schools.” The two remember Rancho Peñasquitos as a rural area. “The local kids would spend all day playing in the streets or at parks, running or riding bikes… and not coming home until the street lights turned on. There were even cattle and buffalo grazing in the fields of what is now Carmel Mountain Ranch.” Matt graduated from National University with two degrees, a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies and an M.S. in Educational Technology. He was a teacher at the Peñasquitos Christian Preschool for five years, and has been a 4th grade teacher

Angie has a B.A. degree in Child Development from California State University Northridge and an M.A. in Cross-Cultural Teaching from National University. Both have California State Multiple Subject credentials. The family is big on volunteering, to name a few organizations, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Leukemia and Lymphoma’s Pasta for Pennies program, and San Diego Children’s Museum. The children, Anna, Rebecca, Johnny, and Jacob are all involved in the community whether it’s with basketball, baseball, the saxophone or bassoon, or running cross country. The boys attend Mt. Carmel High School; Jacob will be a freshman in the fall while Johnny will be a junior. Anna is pursuing Anthropology at Miramar College and San Diego State University. Rebecca will be starting her Civil Engineering degree at Cal Poly Pomona in the fall as a - Angie Aneshansley freshman. You wouldn’t know it, but the Aneshansleys are a tightly knit blended family and with one on the way, “Angie is pregnant, due in late October, with a baby girl. New and Uncharted Territory

TAKE A LOOK AT THE NEW NORTH SAN DIEGO BUSINESS CHAMBER

A

name change is often symbolic of a fresh start, casting off the old in favor of the new and uncharted. The San Diego North Chamber of Commerce has officially changed their name, creating a new identity while still maintaining the same level of service and commitment that their reputation upholds. Presenting to northern San Diego, the new and improved North San Diego Business Chamber. According to North San Diego Business Chamber President and CEO Debra Rosen, the old name and logo “no longer defined our membership and was not representative of the area we serve.” Their goal was to create a name that reflected the larger geographic area that encompasses their members, from down near Interstate 8 to the northern border of Murietta. With their new logo of two figures with open arms, the Chamber wants to welcome new professionals and provide the stability and comradery that they seek. Working in tandem with Bottom Line Marketing (BLM), utilizing surveys from both

members and non-members, the Chamber was able to understand not only who they were as an entity, but what minor changes were needed. One of those changes was becoming the “only Accredited U.S. Chamber in San Diego County.” With accreditation, chamber members can rest assured that their membership fees are going towards providing assistance for their business, connecting with partners, and being a valid voice in a “fastgrowing business community.”

26 • 92129Magazine.com • August | September 2014

The North San Diego Business Chamber may have changed in name and face, but it’s size and spirit is promised to be just as unique as before. “As a team, we’re compassionate and approachable to all our members… Most importantly, we are relevant to our members.” 

A New Town Tradition

PQ TOWN COUNCIL ORGANIZES FIRST PQ DAY AT THE FAIR photo provided by KRISTINE CUSTODIO

The

San Diego County Fair in Del Mar is no doubt an annual tradition that is here to stay. But this year the folks at the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council wanted to make a trip to the fair extra special for 92129 residents – by holding a PQ Day at the Fair. Former Community and Business Partnership Chairs Kristine Custodio and Armand Bryant were key in organizing this day. “PQ Day at the Fair was a day-long community celebration of what makes PQ a special place to live, work and play,” said Kristine. The Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council, Peñasquitos Emergency Response Council (PERC) and Building Leaders As Servants Today (BLAST) were just a few of the many organizations that set up shop at the Infield Pavilion at the fair. “We were fortunate to have an appearance by San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts, who took the time to meet and greet fairgoers,” shared Armand. But how was this special day organized in the first place? It was happenstance, in fact, an idea that surfaced during the Fab Fair photo shoot at the Rancho Peñasquitos Library for the banners around PQ. The Fair and the Town Council Community and Business Partnerships Committee came together to brainstorm the possibilities and settled on a single day just for 92129 residents. Armand added, “It was great interacting with the fairgoers. Some attendees mentioned not being familiar with the area, giving us the opportunity to discuss what the community has to offer and why we enjoy PQ, the place I have personally called home for many years.” 

ROYAL DANCE ACADEMY& R.A.P.A. OWNER FRANCINE GARTON ANNOUNCES NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART DANCE FACILITY, ROYAL ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS

W

hat would compel an accomplished dancer, who was in the enviable position of performing all over the world with renowned dance companies, to suddenly stop and embark on a new direction? Francine Garton, the Britishborn owner of the Royal Dance Academy (RDA) in Carmel Valley and the future dance academy, Royal Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA), which will open in September, explained, “I loved to perform, but I always felt I had more to give. So I came back to Manchester and set up my own business teaching dance in the local inner city elementary schools. It was then that I found my passion for teaching.”

Francine’s dedication to dance and teaching lead her to San Diego, where she opened RDA. She recalled, “Quite a few people told me that I just couldn’t move here and open my own business, especially as I was a woman with two small babies, no help and no experience in the USA. It wasn’t easy, but the love for what I do, the hard work, the passion for teaching dance, and most of all the fact that

With the goal of “bringing the best of the best together,” this new facility, Royal Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA), will open in September and offer acting, dance, music and voice classes all under one roof. According to Francine this state-of-the-art facility will have five spacious dance studios, an in-house auditorium, an acting studio, three music/voice studios, a Pilates reformer and Gyrotonic studio, as well as a juice bar and dance store on site. RAPA will cater to students of all ages and abilities. Classes will be available for adults and children as young as 18 months and cater to skill levels ranging from recreational to professional. “I feel proud that I have been able to keep RDA a success for thirteen years and that I have been able to share the love of dance with so many children and their families,” Francine shared. She will continue this legacy with her new facility. Francine will also continue to provide the best training possible for her students at RDA with numerous classes for all ranges of dance and performing. “I have many teachers to suit different personalities, ages, dance styles and levels, so parents have a choice. I am proud that we care about the whole child and their well-being and not just their dance ability,” said Francine. With her determined fervor, Francine is always working to improve both dance studios. She has already expanded RDA three times in the past twelve years, and regularly brainstorms on new ways to deliver better service for her students and their families. Francine revealed, “I drive myself insane as I am constantly looking at new ways to give more and achieve more. I am passionate about providing my families with the best possible dance education and experience!” She looks forward to creating more cherished memories at RAPA stating, “The lessons learned at RDA and RAPA will always go beyond a dance step.” 

Q&A with Mary

Ngai, Area Manager

When did the Rancho Peñasquitos Skate Park first open? In 2005, the park opened with wooden ramps, which were removed for safety reasons in 2009. Please explain the highlights of the newly renovated Skate Park. The recently renovated Rancho Peñasquitos Skatepark offers a 22,000 square foot concrete skateboarding facility housing an impressive array of street and ramp styled features. New features include a multi-level skate plaza located in the southwest corner of the park with four stair handrail, bank ramps and grind box, double sided hubba grind ledge, high to low banked hip, banked hip with gap, angled manual pad, San Francisco styled Pier 7 manual pad and a generous staging area with seating. In the center of the park lives a new street style stage feature with a loading dock element, multi-height grind ledges, grind rail with small euro gap, gap to hubba grind ledge with two small kicker ramps at different distances and a new twelve foot-long grind rail. Along the southeast corner of the park is a new addition to the family of medium-sized transition ramps at the park, including both inside and outside radius corners with metal coping, a three foot to four and a half foot ramp extension with grind ledge, and large hipped bank ramp. The existing picnic table features are now renovated and set into a new medium-sized bank ramp with euro gap. The western edge of the park now includes a wide quarter pipe with integrated grind ledge. Two of the park’s grind rails have been upgraded and a new metal pole jam feature has been installed. Four new shade structures have been added to the park for relief from those hot summer days, including three square cantilever sails and one large triangular shade structure over the skateplaza. Other original features of the skatepark include a 3 flat 3 double stair set with kinked handrail, a replica of the San Dieguito ten stair rail with matching grind ledges, flat ledge and elevated pad, angled grind ledge, a spine ramp with transition hip, multi-height quarter pipe ramps with bowl corner, multi-height

pyramid with ledges and rails, straight and curved bench style ledges and large bank ramp with launch ramp.

How was/is the park funded? The park is funded through the Rancho Peñasquitos Development Funds.

What are your responsibilities in your position? As an area manager with the Park and Recreation Department, I oversee the maintenance and operations of all the parks in Rancho Peñasquitos, Torrey Del Mar, and Black Mountain Ranch. This includes Canyonside Recreation Center, Hilltop Recreation Center and the Rancho Peñasquitos Skate Park.

What are some of the unique aspects available at the Skate Park? The park is used by skaters of all ages from elementary school children to adults and is open daily from 10 a.m. to dusk. Skaters must wear helmets, as well as elbow and knee pads.

What other local projects have you worked on? The most recent project was the new tot lot and ADA improvements at Views West Neighborhood Park which opened in July 2013. When did renovations start on the Skate Park? November 2013 What, if any, changes to the landscape of the park were needed? There were a few plants added to the landscaping around the park. When did the park reopen? What were some of the highlights of the opening event? The park reopened on June 19, 2014. The skaters have been very happy with the improvements. A formal ribbon cutting event was held on July 8, 2014 with Councilmember Mark Kersey, Park Board President Bill Diehl and other city staff who were key to completing the project in attendance. What was the inspiration for Skate Park renovations? Who was behind the design? Aric Sanders, who works for Schmidt Design Group, Inc. designed the new ramps and features. Aric also helped design the original skate park as a volunteer when it first opened. Aric was a professional skateboarder and is very familiar with the skate park and the people who use it.

40 • 92129Magazine.com • August | September 2014

Where can our readers go to sign-up for classes at the Skate Park? They can register at the Canyonside Recreation Center. Online registration will be implemented on Aug. 23. Are there fees to use the park? No, there are not. Approximately how many skaters visit the park? We do not track specific attendance at the park, but from our observance we know that that over a hundred skaters visit the park on weekends. What was the most memorable part of working at the Skate Park? In working on this redevelopment project, I enjoyed working with Aric Sanders and learning why he designed the ramps and rails the way he did. He spent a lot of time and thought making the new features challenging, but also ensuring skaters of all skill levels could use them. He put a lot of thought and time into the new design. Are there any special activities available specifically for children, teens, adults? A summer camp is offered to elementary school children in the summer. Now that the Skate Park has reopened, what is in store for future work on the park? Future activities? We have heard from some patrons that lights would be desirable, though at this point, there are no plans for that. We are quite happy with the improvements that have been made, especially the new features and shade additions.

Q&A with Aric

Sanders, Project Designer

What was the inspiration behind the original Skate Park design? The original Rancho Peñasquitos Skate Park was designed to offer riders of all skill levels a variety of street and park style skateboarding experiences. Some features such as the ten stair handrail were patterned after famous skateboarding spots like the San Dieguito High School handrail. What inspired the new additions to the Skate Park? There were several goals to achieve on the project including improvements to the skate park features, upgrades for disabled access requirements in and around the park, and providing shade structures for relief during those hot summer months. Design inspiration for the new skate features was in keeping with the theme of street and park style offerings, and also drew inspiration from famous skateboard spots such as San Francisco’s Pier 7 manual pads. Special attention was paid to maintain flow characteristics from feature to feature within the park. For example, where there was once a dead end where several sets of stairs came together, we removed one set of stairs and replaced it with a bank ramp and gap feature to allow path of travel though the area and reactivate the space. There is also a new quarter pipe with grind ledge added along the western perimeter of the park which offers riders new possibilities for creative tricks and redirection back into the heart of the park. One feature, the pole jam, was suggested by local pro skater and friend, Willy Santos. Who were the key players in helping bring these designs to reality? The Schmidt Design Group Project Manager Jeff Justus and Project Designer Aric Sanders, Burkett and Wong Engineers Structural Engineer Mark Batten, the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department Project Manager Sheila Bose and Project Officer Kevin Oliver, Resident Engineer Thomas Smith and Supervising Engineer Tony Perez, San Diego Parks and Recreation Board Chair Bill Diehl, City Parks and Recreation Area Manager Mary Ngai, City of San Diego Accessibility Inspector Alex Warner, USA Shade Representatives Patti

Albrect and Mike Laney, Hank The Guardian Group and The Whistler Construction Team. Tell us about your career as a skateboarder. I am originally from Columbus, OH and first discovered skateboarding at the age of 4. I found my uncle’s Logan Earthski skateboard and was hooked from the first try. I was lucky enough to have patient and supportive parents that allowed me to skate constantly and do things like build skateboarding ramps, rails and other features and basically turn our house into a mini skate park. They also frequently took my bother Corey and myself to our local skateboard parks, Sunsports and Dodge Park. I entered my first skateboard contest at around age 12 and continued to enjoy and grow with skateboarding for many years. In January of 1998, I decided to make the move to California to what I perceived to be the home of skateboarding and found the first of several sponsors, Human Skateboards, shortly after arriving in San Diego. From 1998 into the early 2000s were really my golden years with skateboarding. I went on several skateboard tours around the U.S. doing demonstrations including one of the Osiris Shoes Aftermath Tours. I continued to compete in contests and also began judging skateboard contests. I appeared in several skateboard videos such as Soul Grind’s Composure, Destro’s Neighborhood Watch and Willy’s Workshop’s Film This and had a few photos published in magazines like Thrasher, Automatic and Document. Oddly enough, I also had a few pictures featured in yearly skateboard calendars, special thanks Rhino. In the mid 2000s, I began to have some health issues, mostly with my back, that really put a dent in my skateboarding ability. Around that same time I became involved in the original Rancho Peñasquitos Skate Park project as a community member, was tapped as a resource during design and continued to volunteer my time for quality control during construction. Upon completion of the Skate Park, I was awarded the certificate of unofficial project manager by the City, and shortly after that I was offered an opportunity to interview with the park design firm The Schmidt Design

Group where I continue to work to this day. It has been a real honor to be a part of such an amazing project and to have the opportunity to apply my skateboard experience and knowledge from the original design process to help achieve the successful improvement of the park. Have you done any other extreme sports? I occasionally surf and snowboard, and I’ve nearly killed myself on the smallest of motocross jumps. I pretty much stick to skateboarding, but I do really enjoy rollercoasters and skydiving if those count as extreme. What has been the most memorable moment for you at the Skate Park? Being involved with the park for such a long time, I’ve had the opportunity to see a lot of younger kids grow up and develop their skills. Gil Marin is one of those Rancho Peñasquitos locals who lives and breathes the park and has been ripping on his skateboard for a long time. Seeing so many other great skaters make going to the park such an amazing experience, and you can frequently find notable San Diego riders at the park like Jaime Palmore, Jimmy Cao and skateboard legend Willy Santos with his son, Willy Jr. What was most memorable about the park during the construction? What is most memorable about the recent construction of the park was how dedicated all participating parties were and how well everyone coordinated and worked together during the course of the project. As a design and construction team, we often commented during site visits on how great it was to be a part of a project where no one was arguing. What words of advice would you like to give for aspiring skaters/skateboarders in Rancho Peñasquitos? Your skateboard is a more than just a useless wooden toy (skateboard video connoisseurs will get the reference). Come visit us at the Rancho Peñasquitos Skate Park, hone your skills, make new friends and enjoy our great skate park! 

The

holidays are almost here. Now is the time for home improvements in the kitchen and bathroom. Whatever the design needed by a homeowner or contractor, a visit to Dixieline’s Classic Collections showroom reveals solutions. For darker rooms, Dixieline Classic Collections carries Solatube natural lighting products, or for those that are considering aging in place, enhancements such as sit-in bathtubs help make the transition comfortable. “We are truly a one-stop kitchen and bath design showroom,” said General Manager Robert Shiflet. “It all starts with our knowledgeable designers and sales team who listen to the customers’ vision and bring that vision to life.” The 8,000-square foot showroom is a place to visualize the remodel with displays from the building industry’s top manufacturers. Products include custom cabinets, countertops, elegant plumbing, decorative hardware, soaking and jetted tubs, beautiful mirrors and medicine cabinets, and door and window hardware. All are welcome to visit the showroom and relax with refreshments – even the kids. No sales pitches here, kitchen and bath design specialists will discuss cutting-edge styles and designs at competitive prices to fit any budget. One-on-one consultation, in-home measurements, and estimates are free of charge. Classic Collections also schedules delivery, installation, and follow-up at completion. What’s

trending is the kitchen remodel with a focus on cabinetry and countertops. And in the bathroom, vanity upgrades with modern sinks and waterefficient shower fixtures. Dixie Lumber Company (now Dixieline) was established in 1913 by the Cowling family of San Diego. “You’re working with a company that has more than 100 years of experience exceeding customers’ expectations,” said Robert. The Classic Collections showroom launched in 1986 when then-owner Bill Cowling realized there were no luxury showrooms for high-end kitchen and bath design. Dixieline is now owned by ProBuild Holdings, Inc., one of the nation’s largest professional building material suppliers. The general manager’s roots in retail business extend thirty years, with twelve years

at Dixieline. The Shiflet family lives in Rancho Peñasquitos where Robert’s wife was raised. “We know how fortunate we are to be living in such a wonderful community that is strongly centered on family,” shared Robert. Dixieline also supports Rancho Peñasquitos Little League. Customers can find advertisements in mailers each month or can visit www.dixieline.com for specials. Robert Shiflet invites everyone to come for a visit to the showroom, adding “Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, wander about and watch your imagination take flight with infinite possibilities.” 

CURIOSITY Point Loma's Beautiful Landmarks and Nature by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Tyler McElhaney

W

e're deep into summer: the sun is bright, the sand is soft, and the ocean is so inviting. For what remains of your summer break, take a day to explore Point Loma, offering historical landmarks, tide pools, awe-inspiring cliffs and hiking trails.

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse takes you back in time to when sailing ships relied on these beacons to guide them through safe waters. Built in 1854, its light could be seen for twenty-five miles. However, the builders didn’t take into account the signature low fog that would obscure the light, and so in 1891, the lighthouse was closed and a new Point Loma lighthouse was constructed at a lower elevation. The old lighthouse has now been converted into a museum, where you can explore what life was like there and see the old lamp whose large beam once permeated the peninsula. Below the lighthouses are a series of silent sentinels collectively known as Fort Rosecrans. The Point Loma peninsula shapes a natural barrier at the entrance of San Diego Bay, and in 1899 the United States Department of War built a series of gun batteries into the cliffs as a strategic harbor defense. While you can’t

46 • 92129Magazine.com • August | September 2014

enter the batteries themselves today, you can walk alongside these massive strongholds. Whale-watching is popular here, but head to the tide pools to see the tinier creatures that make homes on our shores. Sea stars, mussels, crabs, and other gastropods come and go with the tides. While fun to look at, rangers warn not to touch the animals, as many of them are sensitive and can be harmed or killed from being handled by humans. The tide pools are parallel to the Coastal Tidepool Trail, and more hiking can be explored on the two-mile Bayside Trail. For history hounds, the Cabrillo National Monument offers a closer look at the first explorer to land on the United States’ western shores, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. With a large statue to commemorate his exploration, the park also features annual reenactments of his landing. 

Math instruction remains short and simple to allow math to make sense for all students. The warm, friendly staff uses written, mental, verbal, visual and tactile teaching methods to meet all students’ learning styles, and the reward system employed by them

encourages students to practice what they’ve learned and push themselves to do more. The results speak for themselves. Loty’n’Myh Phimmasone, a pleased parent, revealed, “[Our son] did not like math and would avoid it as much as possible... [Now] he’s getting it done quicker with less errors! He even said he loves math!” Sherly Sebastian, another satisfied parent, remarked, “My daughter has been going to Mathnasium only for a month. But even within this short time period, we are already seeing progress in her tests.” In the future, Mathnasium Center Director Lucille Capule plans to coordinate with 92129 schools to create math competitions and sponsor math nights. She looks forward to making math education exciting in 92129. 

or Jason Polson, sports are the name of the game. Whether you’re talking football, baseball, basketball, water polo, golf, bowling, you name it and Jason has probably played it, served on the sidelines or followed it. Jason, or JP, has been involved in sports almost his entire thirty three years. “My mom and dad got me started in sports at age 5 with tee ball and I have been participating in sports ever since,” explained JP. A lifelong 92129 resident, his years at Mt. Carmel High School were marked by volunteering for any sports team that needed help. “It was my way of being part of the school spirit and to see all the sports,” JP shared. For his years of service, which still continue today (he is the Mira Mesa High School football team manager), JP was awarded a lifetime pass to all Mt. Carmel sporting events by the Athletic Foundation. But JP hasn’t just served on the sidelines; he is also a valuable team player on the field – or in the water. JP earned his varsity letter in water polo playing for Mt. Carmel High School. Today, JP plays on the Poway Padres Special Olympics Softball team, Poway Challenged Basketball League and

Bowling League and is joining the Special Olympics Golf Team this year. Off the sports field, JP loves spending time with his close knit family, including his mom, dad, sister, brother-in-law, and niece. “We get together and watch all the major sporting events and do our own sports pools to see who will have the bragging rights to pick more winners,” JP said. For mom, Becky, JP’s activities and integration in the community can be in part attributed to their involvement with Poway PASS – Parent Advocates Seeking Solutions. The group supports and guides parents who have adult children with developmental disabilities to live fulfilling lives. “Jason was on an island for a number of years. Since I was introduced to PASS, Jason has become more involved in the special needs activities and has many new friends that just love hanging out with each other,” Becky shared. JP is also out in the community through his job at Albertsons and his involvement with the Young Life Capernaum. With all this involvement, JP explained he may appear outgoing but he really is shy. Be warned though, “Watch out! Once I know you, I will talk sports all day long,” JP exclaimed. ¢

From custom club fittings, to virtual playing lessons, to a patented technology that compares your swing to those of professional players, GolfTEC offers not only a lesson in golf, but an experience, as well. “GolfTEC itself was started in Denver, in 1995, by co-founders and PGA Professionals Joe Assell and Mike Clinton,” stated LaTour. “Creating a consistent, well-documented golf instruction approach was at the heart of their new-to-the-world business concept. They set out to revolutionize the golf improvement industry and many would agree they’ve done just that.” While Suzanne – who is in her twenty-first year in the financial services industry – was researching various franchises to diversify for future retirement plans, she signed up to take lessons at GolfTEC. “Three lessons into my plan, I overheard that the store was for sale and called Denver to get more information,” she said. “I thought ‘Perfect. I love golf – I should buy this,’ and I ended up buying the entire San Diego Region with a plan to build out four Centers!”

It’s been almost four years, and GolfTEC now has expanded to two San Diego locations – one in Golden Triangle in La Jolla, and the other in Rancho Bernardo. “GolfTECs are fun, welcoming environments,” stated LaTour. “All of our team love what they do – they love to teach and they are passionate about the game of golf!” GolfTEC’s basic philosophy: “to make people better golfers and do it with an organized

LOCAL SCOUTS SET OUT TO BETTER THE COMMUNITY

S

ince their founding in 1973, 143 Eagle Scouts have made their marks in Troop 622’s history, with more earning that rank this year out of over seventy current members. Alex Vu, Austin Pardi, Benjamin Wade, Daniel Martinez, Garrett Weir, Gokul Hariharan, Gordon Macshane, Jeremy Banks, Michael Reynolds, Nathan Nisil, Nick Bell, Nick Bianco, and Wyatt Vaineharrison have earned or will earn the Eagle Scout rank. These scouts have performed a multitude of projects to better their community – creating a flag burial site, kiosk signs, mannequins for a local museum, and repairing the horseshoe pit at Peñasquitos Canyon. A bulk of their work was giving back to their local schools. Mt. Carmel High School’s stadium had the pathway and drainage improved behind

ulti

the stands, new cabinets, shelving, a reconditioned trailer for the band and choir, and bookcases for the teacher’s lounge. Rancho Bernardo High School’s score keeper box was improved, and new lockers were built for the Westview High School water polo and swim teams. Black Mountain Middle School had a “periaktoi” (a mechanism used for displaying and quickly changing theatre scenes) built for the Drama department. The scouts had older members to look up to, such as Matt Weir, who was selected as PQ VFW Post 11388’s Scout of the Year. The troop is also known for their annual firewood sale. Committee Chair Marie Weir shared, “Troop 622 is known in the PQ area for stacking quality firewood on Saturdays and Sundays from October to mid-November.” Their legacy will live on, so keep a lookout for what this troop is up to next. 

TIPS ON HOW TO USE WATER WISELY THIS SUMMER

by TORI MORRISON

A

ccording to the City of San Diego, June 1 marked a change in the amount of irrigation time San Diegans are allotted in order to accommodate the demanding warmer days of summer. The City has declared, “From June 1 through Oct. 31, when the weather is hotter, the public must water their landscape prior to 10 a.m. in the morning, and not until after 6 p.m. in the evening, to lessen evaporation and get the most out of their water use.” Steps can also be made to conserve water within the household. Here are some tips on how to use water more efficiently at home.

1.

Plug the sink or bath instead of running the water to rinse your razor, or wait for the water to adjust to your desired temperature.

6.

Check your hoses, faucets and appliances regularly for leaks.

2.

Use your dishwasher. Dishwashers save more water and energy than washing dishes by hand. Energy Star dishwashers are more energy efficient than older models, so they end up reducing water waste. If washing dishes by hand, scrap food in the trash before washing, plug the sink, and then wash.

3.

Avoid playing with recreational water toys that require a considerable amount of water. Try water guns or water balloons for some fun in the sun.

4.

Instead of using the hose to clean sidewalks, garages and driveways, grab a broom.

5.

Recycle water. If you drop ice cubes, or need to get rid of water you used to steam vegetables, don’t waste it. You can use the water to feed plants, or turn the excess water into a soup.

54 • 92129Magazine.com • August | September 2014

7.

Place tissues into a trash can instead of flushing them.

8.

Purchase a plastic or aluminum water bottle. It will cut down on the amount of water you waste washing glasses.

9.

Wash your car on your lawn. That way your lawn will get watered at the same time.

10.

Join a community pool instead of wasting water on a personal pool at home. 

2014 Sundevils Fall Sports Preview

T

he athletic journey of another year begins this fall at Mt. Carmel. The athletes will be trying to match the 2013-2014 school year, where four new CIF champions were crowned. Over the past four decades Mt. Carmel has had ninety CIF Champions. The rich traditions of academics and athletics brings tremendous challenges, but the 2014-2015 student athletes are working hard to meet those challenges as they get ready to compete in the Avocado, Palomar and Valley leagues. Athletes at Mt. Carmel are challenged by their coaches to embody the CIF model of pursuing “Victory with Honor.” It is the Sundevil way to embrace the CIF six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Coach Dennis McClanahan will guide the boys and girls cross country teams. The boys will be defending their CIF Championship for the second consecutive year. Katie Fixsen returns for her seventh year as our field hockey coach. After a rebuilding year, our field hockey team looks to return to CIF competition. John Anderson is guiding our football program for the fourth consecutive year. Facing tough Palomar league competition will benefit our team during CIF playoffs. Christine Alf will be stepping in as a first year head coach for our volleyball team. The experience gained by our girls last year should give them a good foundation for league and playoff success. Looking to make another run in CIF is our girls tennis team under the direction of Jim Wrage.

Boys water polo will seek to match last year’s performance of playing for a CIF Championship. Coach Jim Greci will lead the girls golf team in taking on the tough challenge of the Palomar league. Alyssa Ramos-Chavez will be in her first year of directing our cheer program, which brings great enthusiasm and passion, exemplifying the overall athletic program at Mt. Carmel. Please come and cheer on Mt. Carmel as they create more memories for the storied Sundevil athletic program. And remember… “It’s great to be a Sundevil.”

2014 Wolverines Fall Sports Preview

T

he Wolverines are ready to embark on their twelfth season of athletic competition. The coaches and athletes have worked hard to prepare for the challenging season ahead. The Westview fall sports lineup promises to build on the winning traditions established by the high-achieving student-athletes of previous years who have set the stage for academic and athletic excellence. Cross Country Coach Bob Muschek looks to improve upon top five CIF finishes for the boys and girls programs. Head Football Coach Mike Woodward likes the development of this year’s team due to off-

season changes in preparation for the road ahead. In the pool, the Wolverines, under the tutelage of Head Coach Matt Johnson, attempt to improve on last year’s stellar boys water polo season. Field hockey continues to flourish under Head Coach Brittany Schultz. Last season, the Lady Wolverines were ranked in the San Diego top ten weekly. Head Coach Mariah Armstrong anticipates girls tennis to once again demonstrate prowess against the best competition. On the volleyball court, Head Coach Nancy Ros feels very strongly about her team since the Wolverines return a

solid core group. Head Coach Beau Champoux is encouraged about the upcoming girls golf season with five returning players who showed steady improvement throughout last year’s competitions. Westview athletic teams constantly strive to compete for Palomar League and CIF Championships every season. In our quest, the Wolverines appreciate tremendous community support in our united efforts to be the best we can be. ~ Chris Carter, Athletic Director

icnics in the park are a great way to bring friends and family together, especially in a united community. Throw in a dunk tank and some old-fashioned barbeque, and you have a recipe for a more lively get-together! The PQ-NE Action Group kicked off the 8th Annual PQ BBQ-Picnic this past June, a gathering not only to signal the summer start, but also to bring more awareness to the group’s mission. Families enjoyed the dunk tank, inflatable jumpies, shaved ice, and picnic games like egg-and-spoon and gunny sack races. Supervisor Dave Roberts was there to present a certificate of recognition to Fire Stations 40 and 42 for their great work with the recent fires. Jennifer Palkovic of Sienna’s PlayGarden also shared her vision for a playgarden at Rolling Hills Park in memory of her daughter. 

All-Star Attitude in 92129

CONGRATULATIONS TO RANCHO PEÑASQUITOS’ ALL-STARS

B

aseball and softball season may have drawn to a close for the summer for most Little League teams around the county, but the All-Star teams of Rancho Peñasquitos Little League (RPLL) and PQ Girls Softball Association (PQGSA) are fighting strong to the finish. PQGSA had eight All-Star teams this season – four PQ Lightning teams and four PQ Thunder and Bolts teams. Scott Ward, President of PQGSA, was proud to find that all four of the PQ Lightning Teams qualified for the State championship. “PQGSA has never sent all four teams to State at the same time like this, so that’s a huge accomplishment for our league this year!” said Scott. When it came time for the next level, the 10U Lightning team qualified for Nationals in Roseville, CA. “That’s the equivalent to the Little League World Series for boys’ baseball,” Scott explained.

RPLL’s All-Stars had their own share of glory as well. Colin Stowell, President of RPLL, proudly told us that the 9/10 National All-Star team had recently advanced beyond their district to compete in the Section 6 All-Star Tournament. Colin shared, “It is quite an accomplishment to win the entire District 32 tournament and now represent RPLL in the next round of play.” The Intermediate National League team fought their way to an impressive championship game, and the 9U All-Star Tournament team dominated their division in the Scripps Ranch All-Star Tournament this past June. Fall Ball registration for RPLL and Winter Ball registration for PQGSA both begin this August. You can find out more information at www.rpll.org or www.pqsoftball.org. 

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Thinking Solar?

You May Get Burned! I

love the idea of solar power for homes, lowering energy costs while improving the environment. Many of my clients have enjoyed the benefits of solar. However, some solar power clients are learning that what they thought would save them thousands is burning a hole in their pocket. Thousands of homeowners have entered into leased contracts for solar, and right now thousands more are thinking about it. Contracts vary by company, but we have seen some of these contracts cost homeowners dearly. Here are a few things to look for in your contract: 1. Does the solar company put a lien on your home? 2. If yes, does it guarantee they will subordinate to a lender in the event you wish to refinance? If they won’t, the vast majority of lenders will not refinance your home. 3. In the event you sell your home, is the lease assumable? Many leases require full payment upon the sale of your home. Imagine listing your home thinking the lease is assumable only to find out your proceeds are going to be reduced by $15,000 to buy out the lease. When thinking about purchasing or leasing a solar power system, do your research, consult with multiple companies, and speak with your

realtor, lender and the utility company to discuss short term and long term ramifications of purchasing or leasing a solar power system. This extra research could save you from getting burned. 

The Fight for Sight

LOCAL RESIDENT RAISES FUNDS FOR MEDICAL STUDY

J

ennifer Carden, a PQ resident for the past sixteen years, always enjoyed a casual jog through her 92129 homestead. But recently Jennifer has had to put her hobby on hold due to a condition known as retinitis pigmentosa: a degenerative eye disease that affects the retina’s ability to respond to light. While her sight is gradually decreasing, Jennifer and her friends have remained a beacon of hope for a cure, and you can help too. Jennifer is hoping to join a medical study called SCOTS: Stem Cell Opthalmology Treatment Study. In summary, the clinical trial takes adult stem cells from bone marrow and injects them into the eye to improve sight. With a slowly growing success rate, Jennifer’s goal is to join the study this fall. But to travel to the study in Florida, Jennifer needs help. She explained, “This particular trial isn’t receiving any particular outside funding from the government or any pharmaceutical companies, so the financial responsibility falls on that of the participant.” Her friends and family have created a donation page on the website GiveForward, where people can contribute to Jennifer’s “fight for sight.” Jennifer shared, “Although vision loss isn’t life threatening, it is life changing. I pray continually for a treatment and a cure for blindness. I want a chance to regain the vision that I have lost.” You can find her donation page at www.gfwd.at/1kY9eKp or by searching for “Jennifer Carden” on the GiveForward homepage at www.giveforward.com. 
