:::: FROM THE PUBLISHER

Vol. 5, No. 3 TM

Five Years Already?

t all started as an idea. We didn’t know exactly what we were about to get ourselves into. After months of napkin scratching (often accompanied by a glass of wine or two or three at one of our favorite local restaurants), we decided to pull the trigger and launch our first zip code magazine – 92127 Magazine. The initial issue of 92127 hit driveways back in November of 2009 – that’s right, we didn’t even mail them to houses in the beginning. We started mailing to all of the homes shortly thereafter. At least in my mind, the concept was simple and straightforward. We were going to “publish a magazine that people wanted to read.” As a matter of fact, that is still our company mission statement to this very day. After all, how hard could it actually be? The original concept was going to be “template-based” and easy to design. We would then be able to duplicate the template-based concept into other neighboring zip codes. Piece of cake, right? Well… not so fast. What we quickly discovered is that our “templatebased” concept was not going to be template-based after all. On the contrary, as we began to assemble the ZCode Team, we discovered that our talented crew of professionals had a burning desire to push the limits and make each issue better than the last one. In fact, they would have it no other way. Therefore, complete customization was in, and the templates were out. Complete customization allowed us to spotlight people, families, organizations, and businesses at the professional level that they deserved (and we envisioned). We wanted to create bigger-than-life editorial features that people would be proud of and keep for the rest of their lives – articles that are often found framed on their walls. An artistic editorial piece that would normally only be found in national magazines, but all compiled specifically for our local community and residents. That was the vision, and the incredible ZCode Team composed of editorial personnel, graphic designers, account executives, and our production coordinator came together to make it happen. Issue after issue, our team works hard to pull hundreds of pages of beautiful editorial content, advertisements, and community announcements together. The adrenaline rush of upload night (the night that we send the magazine to the printer) is not as strong as it once was. In the early days, it was not uncommon to watch the sun rise after a long night of final touches. Today, we rarely have to stay past 7 p.m. on upload day. But after five years of publishing ZCode Magazines – and a total of 190 issues across sixteen zip codes – we still get excited to kick our feet up and flip through the pages when the issue arrives. In fact, it’s a gift. It still amazes me how a team of nearly twenty people can efficiently work together to produce magazines that touch the heart and soul of the local communities. Thanks for being a reader and supporting 92129 Magazine! Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

eing out in nature is often a spiritual experience for me,” Mike Kelly told us. “It nourishes my soul.” This Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve resident has lived on the edge of the canyon since 1986. When a neighbor informed him that much of the land was threatened with development, he was inspired to join The Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, where he’s been organizing habitat restoration projects in both parks for the past twenty-five years. Mike represents the organization at public hearings when issues concerning the parks arise, and he leads day and nighttime hikes – both nature and history. Mike has had many memorable moments leading hikes through the years. His favorite animals to find are tarantulas. “I picked them up and showed how harmless they are,” he laughed. “Most participants think they’re poisonous to us, which they aren’t.” There have also been a couple of scary events. “Once he didn't see a rattlesnake until after he stepped over it.” “A kid yelled out to me ‘Mister, is that a rattlesnake you just walked over?’ Yep.” He continued, “Another moment was when a big mule deer buck exploded out of the brush next to me on a night hike. Scared the heck out of me!” Mike also volunteers with the California Native Plant Society, Audubon Society, and the San Diego River Park Foundation. “I especially like volunteering with the California Invasive Plant Council,” he explained, “which I co-founded in 1992 and served as president for two years.” He enjoys being a teacher and field instructor at their “weed schools” where volunteers and professionals are trained in how to control invasive weeds in our parks. Mike has received conservation awards from the Audubon Society, Sierra Club, Citizens Coordinate for Century 3, California Chapter of the Society of Ecological Restoration, California Invasive Plant Council, and various state, county, and city recognitions. As he slides into retirement, Mike is excited to be freed up to do more volunteer work in our parks. He’s almost finished co-editing a book from decades of archaeological digs in the preserve. His advice to anyone interested in a career as a naturalist? “Find what part of nature ignites a passion in you and become an expert in it.” ¢ Name: Profession: Community: Hobbies: Favorite Local Spots: Favorite Hikes in 92129:

:::: PQ COUNCIL CONNECTION

What’s New in

PQ?

by MICHELLE O’CONNOR-RATCLIFF Special to 92129 Magazine

Here we are in the thick of the holiday season, and I’m about to ask readers to cast their minds forward to the coming spring. Picture a brisk morning with light fog just beginning to lift and a gentle breeze blowing down Black Mountain Rd. I know it sounds a lot like every day in our little corner of paradise, but it’s the first weekend of May 2015 – the morning of our 20th Annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos. The theme this year is “PQ, Our Playground.” To make this milestone anniversary event extra special, our Fiesta Committee has decided to try something new this year: a community parade. Here’s where you come in. The committee is seeking parade participants who can help make the day truly special and meaningful to our town. We’d love to see community groups, schools, teams, scouts, block parties, clubs, and other PQ-themed organizations walk in the parade in a creative way. There is no fee to participate and the route is shaping up to be about one mile long – a cost and distance we hope will encourage maximum involvement. So consider this your super early notice. Start thinking about ways you can make a statement in our first ever PQ Fiesta Parade!

teen Patrick Paxson strives to reach higher and higher pinnacles with regards to his instrumental goals. He has already played the flute at the worldfamous Carnegie Hall, received the John Philip Sousa Award, and was named the first chair at the Southern California Full Orchestra. Though he began his musical journey with group piano lessons at the age of 4, it wasn’t until Patrick started pursuing guitar and flute in middle school that he got the itch to see just how far he could go with his music. When Patrick studied band as a sixth grader with Jay Posteraro, Director of Bands at Mesa Verde School, Jay had encouraged Patrick to try out for the All County Honor Band, which he was directing.

Eager to earn his spot, Patrick recalled, “I got my own flute teacher (Dr. Elena Yarritu, principal flute with the La Jolla Symphony), practiced my song like crazy, and ended up the third to last chair in the band!” Most notably, Patrick was chosen by the Honors Selection Board to play the flute at the Honors Performance Series, joining others from the U.S. and Canada for a special concert at Carnegie Hall. Describing the experience, Patrick exclaimed, “It was absolutely amazing to play there. Carnegie Hall makes you want to play your absolute best, and it makes you think, ‘Wow, famous people have played on this famous stage, and they are way better than me! I should try to keep up the standard.’” Always ready for a challenge, Patrick took a summer music program in jazz band guitar and admitted, “I totally failed, because I was playing pop chords instead of jazz. But I eventually got a better jazz guitar, learned more chords, and then had fun playing. So I auditioned for the Mesa Verde Jazz Band, and played with them.” Now that he’s a freshman at Westview, Patrick is maintaining his private flute and guitar lessons, and he’s studying marching band at his high school. Of the latter Patrick revealed, “The novelty of marching and playing and making music and cool shapes is very different from what I’m used to. Marching band is fun because it’s a totally different experience from concert band. It pushes me out of my normal comfort zone.” We have no doubt that Patrick will continue to push himself towards more and more musical successes. ¢

MEET THE IRAWAN FAMILY CELEBRATING INDONESIAN AND AMERICAN CULTURE IN 92129 by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

T

he Irawans are a family with strong ties to the local community and to their roots in Indonesia. Daniel, Mila, and their two children, Madeleine and Denzel, have lived in 92129 for the past five years. “We like living in Rancho Peñasquitos because we’re so close to Los Peñasquitos Academy, to our church (Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church), the library parks, and shopping. We also love to travel back to Indonesia and visit our family,” said Mila. It takes about one day to travel from San Diego to Indonesia, but being able to spend time with family is worth the long journey for the Irawans. According to Mila, their family mostly lives on Java Island, so that is where they spend most of their time during their trips abroad.

While the Irawans speak Bahasa – the official language of Indonesia – at home and are teaching the children Indonesian customs, they also take part in American cultural traditions. “Daniel loves cars. He used to take his vintage Volkswagen beetle to car shows. Now, he really enjoys biking and will often ride 100 miles in a week,” related Mila. She and Daniel both earned college degrees in Indonesia before moving to the U.S., with Daniel majoring in architecture and Mila in visual arts. Daniel went on to earn a master’s degree in business after moving to San Diego, and both he and Mila are passionate about the arts and photography. “I am a stay-at-home mom and freelance as a graphic designer,” explained Mila. The Irawan children are also very active and enjoy taking advantage of what San Diego has to offer. Both Madeleine and Denzel enjoy playing outdoors, swimming, biking, and scootering. “Madeleine is a third grader at Los Peñasquitos Academy. She loves art and won first place in the San Diego water conservation poster contest in 2012 – she received her award from the mayor! Madeleine also likes to read and go ice skating,” revealed Mila. Denzel will soon be going to preschool and is also very artistic, enjoying music, drawing, and coloring. As a family, the Irawans can often be found at church, visiting the library, and eating out with friends and family. “We love Indonesian food and are very lucky that one of our best friends is the most amazing Indonesian cook in town. The kids eat some Indonesian food, but they stay away from the spicy dishes,” laughed Mila. ¢

Dedication, Strength, Talent

WHS STUDENTS EXCEL IN COMPETITIVE KAYAKING AND CANOEING

F

our students from Westview High School (WHS) have mastered the art of competitive kayaking and canoeing. Paul Chevallier, Sage Harmon, Christian Carrillo, and Nick Nebel have been involved with the water sports since 2011, which lead them to the San Diego Canoe Kayak Team (SDCKT), a nonprofit organization founded by USA Canoe Kayak Olympian Chris Barlow focused on developing young athletes in Olympic-style sprint kayaking and canoeing, ocean surfski racing, and stand up paddleboard racing. The organization has brought the WHS athletes to the next level, and the boys made their mark in Nationals this year, helping the team come in third overall in the country with a medal count of seventy-nine National Championship medals. The talent doesn’t stop there though. Paul, Sage, and Christian have competed in Nationals for the past three years. Paul has placed first in multiple events, including the Bantam Men’s C1 1000 meter and the Bantam Men’s C1 200 meter. Additionally, he is the national record holder for the annual 14U six-week distance challenge known as Barton’s Bantams. Sage has placed third in both Junior Men’s 1000 meter K4 and C4. Christian has placed third in both Junior Men’s 1000 meter K4 and C4 as well. Nick placed second in the Bantam Men’s 1000 meter C4 and third in the Bantam’s Men’s 3000 meter K2 event. SDCKT encourages paddlers of all ages to join the team. No experience is necessary and all equipment is provided. Contact info@sdckt.net for more information. 

“GROWING The Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council and 92129 Magazine proudly present the winners of our second annual “Growing Up PQ” essay contest. Each contest participant submitted a short essay on the topic “My Peñasquitos Playground.” Although picking just three winners from among the many entries received was exceedingly difficult, the three essays below represent the best in each grade-level category. We were both impressed and inspired by the words of our community’s kids and we hope you will be too. They tell stories of friendship, play, special “first time I ever” memories, family time, and of finding a place of belonging. This is what “Growing up PQ” is all about. Join us in congratulating these three young authors.

here is a special place in PQ that I like and it’s called Canyonside Community Park. Many good things have happened to me at Canyonside like playing one of my first PQ soccer games at the soccer fields. I especially like Field 9 because this is where my softball team’s championship banner is hanging. But one of the most important things to me about Canyonside is that I always have fun when I’m there and I always get to do something that I enjoy like play softball, play soccer, do gymnastics at the rec center, play on the playground and the first time I ever rode my new scooter was on the sidewalks by the softball fields. I have met over fifty kids at Canyonside and I always run into friends when I’m there. My mom always gets to see her friends there too and that makes her happy. I met one of my very best friends, Aleya, at Field 5 during a softball clinic and met my other best friend, Ava, at the soccer fields at Canyonside. Another thing that makes Canyonside special is the memories I have when I go to the t-ball fields. This is where I played my first season of softball. Now I am playing my sixth season on Field 8 and making more memories for when I’m older. I basically grew up at Canyonside and it is my favorite Peñasquitos Playground. I never want to leave Canyonside ever ever ever!

y favorite place in Rancho Peñasquitos is the waterfall in Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. The waterfall is a place where my dad and I go to hike and ride bikes; it’s in the canyon behind my backyard. This is my favorite place because I love nature and spending time with my dad. The waterfall has lots of rocks that you can climb on. The rocks are also in the water and can be slippery so you have to watch your step when you go down there. Since it takes a long time to get there by foot, my dad and I sometimes ride our bikes down there. As you get closer the trail

used to be an antisocial person. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe that me, an outgoing, talkative freshman would be scared of talking to others. You see, I was a bit insecure. When I was young, I used to go to a playground in another part of San Diego and my parents would “encourage” me to strike up a conversation with another child. Usually, it was an awkward “hi” or “what’s your name” from me and most of the time the reply was just silence. I was uncomfortable with talking with my fellow peers so I would just spend my time in solitude. I always thought a playground was where people go to have fun and do enjoyable activities. Well, I definitely wasn’t having fun. Growing up, I went to two different elementary schools until finally moving to Rancho Peñasquitos. In both of these schools, I just felt that I didn’t “belong” there. I was mentally preparing myself for yet another painful experience of trying to make friends or “talking” to others. Yet, little did I know that I wouldn’t have to worry about that anymore.

there were many boxes lying around aching to be unpacked. My parents decided that they needed to organize, so they drove me to the local library. During the five minute drive there, I was freaking out about what I would do and who I would talk to. As soon as I stepped out of the car and went inside the library, I was immediately greeted by a cheery librarian. Then, a nice girl came up to me and asked if I was new. After I muttered a hesitant “yes” to her, she asked if I wanted to sit next to her. I stood there for a few minutes gaping like a fish out of water. She simply smiled and said she wanted to show me around the library. She guided us to a comfy-looking seat and told us that she loved doing some activities there that the library kindly funds for us. I was in heaven. I just couldn’t speak. Glancing at the enormous amounts of books, the Book Nook, and the fun crafts club, I realized that this place was amazing mostly because of the amount of happy people who just seemed so friendly, chatting with each other and just having fun. It’s like there was this comfortable aura that just decided to settle itself inside of this building. Each person I made eye contact with smiled at me. I smiled back at them and realized that it was time to let go of the awkward introductions my parents would force me to do. For the first time in forever, I would finally have the courage to do it myself. Because this heavenly place is my playground.

I think it was a Saturday morning. I woke up and I went downstairs ready to start another mundane morning. We had just moved in a week ago so

narrows and we have to go the rest of the way on foot. That’s when you hear it, the waterfall! When you’re close to the waterfall you can hear the sound of the running water. It sounds like the waves crashing down on the shore at the beach. When I stand on the highest rock I get a beautiful view of the canyon. You can see trees, birds, and sometimes other animals like bunnies. When you hear the birds chirp and you’re on the rock looking down on the trees it’s something magical like you’re in an enchanted forest. My favorite part of the waterfall is climbing all the rocks, hearing the water, and admiring the view. It’s a great place to go exploring or hiking with your friends or family. I can’t wait for my next trip, maybe I’ll pack a picnic.

92129 resident Emmet Pierce took home an impressive list of achievements at the San Diego Press Club’s annual journalism contest. A freelance writer and editor, Emmet took first place awards in the categories of real estate, health and medicine, science and technology, and education for a total of seven awards. “I was overwhelmed to win seven awards from the San Diego Press Club. Later, when people later asked me which stories won awards, I had to check the contest program to be certain that it really happened. I have to give credit to my editors for giving me great topics to write about. That’s what made the difference,” shared Emmet. Emmet was a member of “Home,” the San Diego Union-Tribune’s real estate section, from 2000 until 2009. In 2009, he was awarded the nonprofit California Reinvestment Coalition’s annual media award for his reports on the mortgage lending crisis. His work has appeared in a variety of publications including online publications such as www.forbes.com, MSN Money, Fox Business, as well as the North County Business Journal, the San Diego Business Journal, and more.

Chargers Jewelry for a Cause

Game-day wear doesn’t just mean jerseys and face paint these days. Chargers Safety Eric Weddle has joined forces with local jewelry designers to create a Chargers-themed jewelry line, with a portion of the proceeds donated to battered women’s charities. Patrick Pickford, along with colleagues Gerly Noland and Danielle Greisen, was excited to start the project. “Eric is a very good friend of mine,” said Patrick. “It seemed like a perfect fit for us to collaborate on a Chargers-themed jewelry line in support of the cause and donate to those in need.” They plan to continue the collaboration with accessory items for men too. Eric and the designers say they have been overwhelmed by the support from the fans and the community response. “It means everything to give back to the community and those in need,” said Eric. North County Rotary’s Annual Football Game

The San Diego North County Rotary Club just presented the 23rd Annual Rotary Bowl. The annual game between Mt. Carmel and Rancho Bernardo High School was first sponsored by the club in 1992. The game itself was founded shortly after Rancho Bernardo High School was formed. As many of the new students came from the Mt. Carmel area, they saw the game as a great opportunity to continue a close relationship with the school, as well as a budding rivalry. Rancho Bernardo High School took home the win this year and was awarded a special trophy. For more information about the San Diego North County Rotary Club visit www.sandiegonorthrotary.org.

Hoops for Hope at MCHS

Dec. 26 marks Mt. Carmel High School’s (MCHS) 29th Holiday Hoops Classic at the Mount, an annual boys basketball tournament and tradition. The school will also host Hoops for Hope, a tribute to breast cancer survivors and their loved ones, at 7:30 p.m. The MCHS boys basketball team will start their first game of the tournament immediately following the tribute. MCHS Coach Chris Vitous began the Hoops for Hope tribute last year when one of his parent volunteers, Chris Haden, was diagnosed with breast cancer. “We are especially grateful to the wonderful support from the Sundevil community to support and raise awareness about breast cancer,” said Coach Chris.

Christmas Card Lane in 92129

As the days get longer, San Diegans like to light up the night and celebrate the season. Decorating homes with strings of lights is a popular tradition across the country, but some neighborhoods take it to the next level. Entire streets of extravagant displays attract visitors from all over town – but not everyone knows where the best neighborhoods are. Luckily Rancho Peñasquitos residents don’t have to go far to find the festivities, because one of the best-known holiday hotspots is right here in 92129. You can find “Christmas Card Lane” on Oviedo St. off of Black Mountain Rd. The streets get crowded, so consider parking the car and enjoying the lights on a leisurely stroll. Displays typically go up in the second week of December and stay up through the end of the month, but schedules are subject to change.

Toys for Tots

Spread some holiday cheer by helping out the less fortunate during the Christmas season with the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. According to the Toys for Tots program, the ultimate objective is “to help less fortunate children experience the joy of Christmas, to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children, to unite all members of local communities in a common cause, and to contribute to better communities in the future.” ABC Children’s Dentistry in 92129 will serve as one of the local drop-off locations this year. Mt. Carmel Improv Match

Skate Park Spotlight

Improv at the Theatre at the Mount at Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS) is taken very seriously. The first improv match of the year at MCHS attracted an enthusiastic crowd for what students called “one of the biggest matches MCHS has seen in a while.” The improv matches take place among teams who photo by Marianna McMurdock must perform a scene, complete a challenge, or participate in a game. Improv matches are fairly simple to follow and extremely engaging, requiring active audience participation. For the first match of the year, MCHS took on Rancho Bernardo High School, taking home the win after the match tied and then was taken into a final game. MCHS hosts weekly improv meetings on Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Mt. Carmel PAC. Their improv game will be held on Dec. 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Rancho Bernardo High School. For more information about the improv club head to www.mchsdrama.com.

Famous skateboarders including Willy Santos – whose son graced 92129 Magazine’s cover feature on the skate park – JT Aultz, Jimmy Carlin, the Sk8mafia, and Transworld’s Mike Fitzgerald, were some of the faces that spent the day skating to their hearts content at the newly revamped park. The crew even shot a video of themselves to capture the many tricks that were attempted, executed, and/or mastered that day. To watch the video visit www.skateboarding.transworld.net, and be sure to pay a visit to the new and improved Rancho Peñasquitos Skate Park, which is open daily (including the holidays) from 10 a.m. to dusk.

Local Farmer’s Market Turns Thirteen

Ambassador Girl Scout Janel Cuevas has partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure San Diego to promote breast cancer awareness within the community. Last month, Janel held a Girl Scout Gold Award Project that consisted of multiple workshops informing adults about early detection and prevention for breast cancer at the Rancho Peñasquitos Library through her partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure San Diego. Janel quotes her family as the main motivation behind these workshops. “I have two aunts that were diagnosed with breast cancer and these women served as my inspiration to work on this project,” she shared. She continued, “I am very lucky to be partnering with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, San Diego who assists me in every way they could to spread awareness.” For more information about the workshops contact Janel by emailing janelcuevasgoldaward@gmail.com.

The Scripps Ranch Farmers Market and Family Festival just celebrated its thirteenth year of excellence. The market, which serves the 92131 community and surrounding areas like 92129, is managed by Bev Cassity and her husband, Mike, who take photo by Spark Photography pride in their local market. “We aren’t a tourist attraction market, we are just a great community-based farmers market, where families gather on Saturday mornings, year-round, to eat, visit, and one-stop shop,” Bev remarked. Bev and Mike definitely have a family-minded approach to managing the market. They’re available every week at the market’s information booth, ready to chat with visitors, and educating young people about shopping locally and eating well. With over sixty vendors a week, locals can definitely find a lot within the local one stop, from organic vegetables to artisan breads and more. 92129 Student’s Lending Library

92129 resident Annelise Morgan firmly believes in the importance of a quality education. She also recently found that resources can be crucial to teenagers’ developments as students. As a student in a higher level math class in high school, Annelise met several students who struggled in class because they didn’t have access to a particular type of calculator called a graphing calculator. Annelise was determined to solve this problem. Her solution was to create a lending library for calculators. “I made presentations to our educational foundation, PTSA, and the PQ Town Council – all of whom contributed financially. In addition, I worked with the teachers to refurbish older calculators, solicited donations from our families, and encouraged students who would not need their calculators after class to donate them,” she explained. Annelise incorporated this into her project for her Girl Scout Gold Award and created a step-by-step instruction guide for other schools about how to implement a lending library program.

Senior Volunteers Wanted

Want to do something fun and rewarding in your community? Seniors Helping Our Kids (SHOK), an organization that places volunteers in Poway Unified School District (PUSD) schools with students to tutor reading, is currently seeking volunteers. SHOK is an allvolunteer organization that has been serving PUSD for over twenty years. Each year the organization places about 175 volunteers with schools in the district. Tutors are trained to offer enjoyable reading and writing activities that build reading and comprehension skills, confidence, and motivation. Volunteers can pick the amount of time and day that they’d like to volunteer for and no special background training is necessary. Volunteers are also given the option of choosing which school they would like to work with. Currently, the organization needs volunteers for Los Peñasquitos Elementary and Sundance Elementary Schools. Dr. Michel – who, like the other doctors in the practice, is CRT-certified. “Special therapeutic contact lenses are worn during sleep to gently reshape the cornea, the front surface of the eye, providing good natural daytime vision.” CRT is suitable for many patients with mild nearsightedness and, unlike LASIK eye surgery, isn’t restricted to only adults. “Children and young adults between the ages of 8 to 18 years old make up 70% of patients in CRT,” stated Dr. Chou. Another benefit to CRT is its outstanding results without the surgical risk. “Most of our patients in CRT are active in sports and want unhindered daytime vision,” added Dr. Michel. “Additionally, there is mounting scientific evidence that CRT reduces the natural progression of nearsightedness during childhood.” Comparatively speaking, the cost is an upside, as well. “The fee for CRT prescribing including initial lenses is approximately $1,500 – less than half the cost of LASIK surgery,” noted Dr. Michel. With a favorable track record since FDA approval in June of 2002, CRT is established as a safe and effective form of vision correction,

I’M VERY HAPPY WITH CRT AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO OTHER CANDIDATES!” ~ ANGIE though it’s still not well-known among the general public. “The risks with CRT are similar to traditional contact lens wear,” stated Dr. Michel. “The CRT consultation for eligibility is complimentary during a comprehensive examination at EyeLux Optometry.” 

an Diego’s brewing scene is booming these days, and we in North County are lucky enough to experience the best of the boom right here in our own communities. Craft breweries, also known as microbreweries, are independently owned and produce small amounts of beer,

allowing for higher quality and greater individualization than traditional breweries. Perhaps nowhere is this industry growing faster than in San Diego, which has become a beer-drinker’s dream destination – and not just for the beaches any more. Local breweries have been stepping into the international spotlight with their award-winning beers. The industry’s exhilarating growth shows no sign of slowing down. With the recent celebration of the 6th Annual San Diego Beer Week last month, we’re excited to offer an insider’s look at the best breweries North County has to offer. The craft brewers we speak to have a huge variety of differences in technique and taste, but they all share a deep-rooted passion for their products. We invite you to read along and see what the buzz is all about.

e know, we know! You have been homebrewing for years now, and you and your friends will love the cascade hops you’re adding to the next batch of “John’s Love Potion Pale Ale,” but for the rest of us, we’ve compiled a quick guide of styles and explanations to some of San Diego’s more popular styles of beer. So the next time you’re ordering a flight of

tasters, go with a variety, and decide for yourself what you like in your beer. North County San Diego is on the forefront of the craft brewing revolution, so be sure you’re not left out of the loop.

Stout Stouts are dark beers usually made from roasted malt or roasted barley as the main source of flavor. While there is debate about the styles, Stouts were traditionally the generic term for the strongest porters. The two styles have branched out to include hundreds of variations, but the basics remain: dark beers made from dark, roasted grains. Imperial stouts (or Russian Imperial Stouts) have grown recently in popularity, especially in San Diego, for their high alcohol content (usually above 9%) and their dynamic flavor profile.

IPA, Pale Ale & Amber Ale India Pale Ale beers have quickly become the face of craft beer in San Diego and across the nation. Their bitter taste and sharp bite are synonymous with local flagship beers. The “pale” in pale ale beers refers to the pale malt used in brewing these types of beers. While differences between pale ales and IPAs usually lie in the latter beer’s increased alcohol content and hoppiness, creative breweries push these boundaries increasingly. Local craft amber ales have a similar taste profile as a standard pale ale, with a sweeter flavor because of added amber malt during brewing. Variations of these styles include the Imperial IPA and Double IPA (also called a “San Diego IPA” outside of the area).

Wheat “Wheat” can cover a wide range of beers but are all brewed using a large proportion of wheat malt. Most wheat beers can often be categorized under Weizenbier, Witbier, and Sour styles. Weizenbier includes

Hefeweizen, a sweet and low-hop beer that often includes citrus or spice notes. Witbier (“White Beer”) are similar, but use some additional fruit and spice notes and have a slightly more sour taste because of lactic acid. Sour beers are similar to Witbiers with added tart flavors and alterations to the brewing method.

Belgian While not a specific variation, Belgian or Trappist ales often share a common flavor profile (you’ve probably heard one of your friends comment “that tastes Belgian!”). Originating from monasteries across Europe, Belgian-style beer focuses on the balance between malt sweetness, hop bitterness, and aromas (usually fruity, spicy, or floral). Local beers brewed in this style are often called “abbey-style” ales as they don’t fit labeling requirements. Common styles that fall into this category are Enkel, Dubbel, Tripel, and even Quadrupel.

Pilsner & Lager While a pilsner (or pale lager) beer is a specific type of lager, these terms are often used interchangeably when referring to coldbrewed beer using bottom-fermenting yeast. Pilsners and American Lagers are often lightly hopped and aim for the highest level of drinkability. Because of the lower temperature of fermentation, these beers often have a cleaner, crisp taste. Local breweries have had success with variations of these styles to cater to the craft brewery lover’s palate. If you see an India Pale Lager on a menu in the future, be sure to give it a try!

F

or Ph.D-level Biochemist Jim Crute, science is second nature – and so is brewing beer. When he made the switch in his professional life to start up Lightning Brewery it seemed like a natural transition. The brewery was founded as a small artisanal brewery and remains that way today, only now with its beers available in over 300 local restaurants, shops, and grocery stores. His science background inspires him to discover innovative brewing methods. “Our flagship beer Thunderweizen Ale is crafted with a very timeconsuming and very hard-to-emulate process of decoction mashing,” said Jim. “This method enhances the body of the finished beer, dramatically improving taste, impression, and enjoyment.” Methods like this are what make Lightning Brewery so unique. “We are the first, and, to my knowledge the only brewery in San Diego County that uses this process,” he noted. Lightning Brewery has earned dozens of regional and national awards. “In 2012 our seasonal beer Old Tempestuous Ale won the Best of Show award at the California State Fair,” shared Jim. “We take that award as having the best beer in California that year.” Lightning Brewery is located at 13200 Kirkham Way in Poway. ave you ever been intimidated while beer or wine tasting because you’re surrounded by snooty “experts” who make you feel inferior? 92127’s Abnormal Company has built their business around dismantling that attitude. Co-Owners Matthew DeLoach, James Malone, and Elvin Lai, friends and fellow Poway High School graduates, have made their urban brew and wine industry business – which now includes a new beer

brewery, restaurant, and expanded winery – approachable, friendly, and fun! The owners are especially excited about their newly opened restaurant, The Cork & Craft. James shared, “We all love good food, and there’s nothing quite like a delicious meal paired with a glass of wine or craft beer. We are so excited that this adventure has now led us into the action-packed craft beer and restaurant worlds!”

36 • 92129Magazine.com • December 2014 | January 2015

Abnormal Company is also proud to soon bring its customers in-house produced beers focused on drinkability in addition to the extensive tap and bottle list they currently have. Their glass-enclosed brewery is expected to be up and running by the end of the year. Abnormal Company intends to brew during restaurant hours to provide customers with a sense of artistry and display of their craft. According to Co-Owner Matthew, the company’s beer will be “gluten-reduced, flavorful enough to sit gently on the palate, and will pair perfectly with fare offered by The Cork & Craft.” As The Cork & Craft’s mission is to elevate the concept of comfort food to a gourmet experience, this new brewery will encourage customers to think a little more about what they are drinking, try out new beer and food pairings, and dare to step out into the abnormal. But after The Barrel Room started thriving, the guys knew it was time to expand. “We really wanted to do something different,” explained Nate. “The idea of burgers and beer just kind of seemed obvious,” added Grant. Urge opened in July 2010, and has since shone as an American reinterpretation of the classic English pub, with an emphasis on local products and great service. They enjoy being able to give back locally. “We’ve donated over $100,000 to local charities,” shared Grant. “We all try to be as active as we can in the community.” Urge Gastropub is located at 16761 Bernardo Center Dr., in Rancho Bernardo. DID you KNOW? In 2011, brewers and brewpubs generated a $299.5 million direct economic impact in San Diego County. The economic contribution of craft brewers is more than 1 ½ times greater than the economic impact of Comic-Con International, San Diego’s largest annual convention. Since 2011, the total number of craft breweries in the region has more than doubled. The largest craft brewing event in the region is San Diego Beer Week, which features more than 500 events and lasts from early to mid-November. Beer Week brings more than 20,000 participants to San Diego County.

stablished in 2013 by Rancho Peñasquitos resident Alex Van Horne, Intergalactic Brewing Company has quickly set itself apart as an artisanal small batch brewing company. According to Alex, the brewing company has crafted well over eighty varieties of beer in just their first eighteen months alone. It is this innovation, along with the company’s “never give up and never surrender” attitude and motto “to boldly brew,” that’s greatly benefited their craft. With signature brews such as their award-winning Coconut Porter, That’s No Moon Triple IPA, and their most popular beer, Andromeda IPA – their fruity and citrusy twist of a San Diego IPA – the brewing company is not afraid to experiment with new ingredients and recipes. “Our uniqueness comes from our dedication to exploring flavors and new styles,” explained Alex. Intergalactic Brewing Company is constantly experimenting with new flavors; however one thing is certain not to waver: their involvement with their community. “We [maintain this by] brewing small batches of passionately crafted beer for our community and getting involved with local beer festivals that are put on by nonprofit organizations,” shared Alex. allast Point was born in the back room of Home Brew Mart, a supply store for home brewers owned by Jack White. In 1996, he teamed up with fellow home brewer Yuseff Cherney for a homegrown venture that would grow into the Ballast Point Brewery known and loved by San Diegans today. Ballast Point outgrew the back room and moved to its current Scripps Ranch location in 2004. Their efforts have produced internationally recognized results. At this year’s World Beer Cup, Ballast Point won a Gold Medal in the International Pale Ale Category for their Sculpin IPA, as well as a Bronze in the Aged Beer Category for their 2012 Aged Navigator Doppelbock. The name Ballast Point and the names of most of their beers come from Jack and Yuseff’s other passion – fishing. The team takes this passion very seriously, and the business’ two award-winning sport fishing teams have proved that in competition. In addition to mastering the arts of brewing and fishing, Jack and Yuseff have begun exploring the ancient craft of distilling. Seven Ballast Point spirits are now made and bottled at the same Scripps Ranch location. Check out www.ballastpoint.com for more.

Managing Holiday Stress FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU COPE by LEIGH VAN VRANKEN, MD; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo

The countdown to the holiday season has started, and while most of us look forward to enjoying the festivities, heightened demands and the pressure to “do it all” often bring unwelcome stress. Shopping, baking, parties, and volunteering can throw you into a dizzying whirl of activity that can wreak havoc on your health and emotional well-being. This year, take a deep breath and try these practical tips to minimize stress and enjoy the fun.

1. Feel free to say no. Don’t overbook yourself. Fitting in family obligations, school holiday events, and finding the perfect gifts can seem overwhelming on top of an already busy schedule. Look at your to-do list and decide what you “must” do versus “want” to do. You may need to cross off a few items, but that will give you time to rest and recharge.

2. Spend time with people you care about. Connecting with family and friends is important, and it doesn’t have to be elaborate. Have a potluck get-together with neighbors and watch old movies. Maybe bake holiday treats with the kids. Consider decorating the Christmas tree with nostalgic ornaments or eating latkes after lighting the Chanukah menorah. Or keep it simple and catch up over a cup of your favorite holiday beverage.

Looking for a new doctor? To find a Scripps physician near you call 858-256-7559 or visit www.scripps.org/92129.

3. Make healthy choices. While the holidays are infamous for calorie-laden treats, that doesn’t mean you have to give up altogether on healthy eating. By all means, enjoy the tastes of the season, but if you overeat one or two days, make sure you quickly get back into your healthy routine and maintain good eating habits. If you feel you won’t be able to cheat a little, then take a step back from the buffet table and load up on salads with one or two goodies. Remember to drink lots of water and limit alcohol consumption.

4. Stay active. Exercising every day – whether you walk your dog, run on the beach, or take a yoga class – will help you stay calm during the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Prolonged physical activity releases endorphins, or brain chemicals that act as natural pain and stress relievers, so your aerobics class is the last thing you should skip.

5. Get enough sleep. Trying to maintain a hectic holiday schedule can make it challenging to get enough sleep, but those necessary hours of shut-eye help you stay alert and have enough energy to enjoy the season. 

:::: IN OUR OWN BACKYARD

PARADING

AROUND SAN DIEGO Local Traditions Keep the Holiday Cheer Alive

S

by LAINEY KRAL

an Diegans may not experience classic white winters, but we still know how to celebrate the season. In fact, our sunny weather makes December an even better time to take our holiday cheer to the streets. From people to pets and from shore to sea, San Diego has a parade perfect for everyone. Head to North Park on Dec. 6 for the 51st Annual North Park Toyland Parade, a local tradition that dates back to 1936 and was reborn in the late 1980s. Every year, University Ave. fills with marching bands, dance teams, beauty queens, local dignitaries, and community members eager to strut their stuff. Special guests include the new Queen of the North Park Toyland Parade and Santa Claus himself. You won’t want to leave Toyland, and you won’t have to – the Toyland Festival will prolong the magic with pony rides, inflatables, food trucks, and live musical performances. Parades aren’t just for people, and your fourlegged friends can join the fun in the Gaslamp Holiday Pet Parade on Dec. 14. Dress up in your holiday best and promenade through the historic Gaslamp Quarter with a bevy of other celebrants, starting and ending at the Gaslamp Hilton Park. Awards are available in categories such as Best Pet Costume, Cutest Critter, and Ugliest Holiday Sweater. Pets and their human chaperones will get a free bag of goodies at the accompanying Pet Expo. San Diego is known as a surf and turf hotspot, and the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights keeps the holiday spirit afloat – literally! On Dec. 14 and 21, over eighty illuminated boats will proceed from Shelter Island past Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, and Ferry Landing in Coronado. Participants will bedeck their boats in lights and decorations according to this year’s theme of “Children’s Stories”. Various award categories are judged on creativity of lighting, music, and other special effects. Whether sailing your own boat or camping out on the shore, watch the water come alive with light and sound. 

sea of purple, the color for kindness, and seafoam green shirts with the phrase “I mustache you to be kind” filled the Mesa Verde Middle School (MVMS) campus during Kindness Week. Fully packed with activities that promoted the importance of kindness, the week taught each student to understand the impact a kind word or deed can have on an individual, the school, and their community. The week kicked off with breakfast and trivia for students and continued with a kindness pledge on Tuesday. Students were then asked to sign a banner with their kindness pledge. On Thursday, the students wrote thank you cards to wounded soldiers, which were then delivered to the Wounded Warrior Project for “Operation Appreciation.” Students were given a chance to spin the Wheel O’ Kindness and complete an act of kindness in front of their peers at the end of the week. 

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER KIM STADLER BELIEVES IN THE GOODNESS OF PEOPLE by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

“I

’m an Orange County girl who moved to San Diego to marry my Prince Charming,” PQ resident Kim Stadler shared, “my husband, Mark. Twenty-three years of wedded bliss and still going strong.” The Stadlers have lived in Rancho Peñasquitos for the past thirteen years, and one of the ways Kim expresses her love for the area is through serving on the board of the PQ-NE Action Group. The group is a nonprofit organization, committed to promoting and preserving a safe and livable environment for the residents of The Glens and The Villages, two PQ neighborhoods. The organization’s efforts are directed at educating residents regarding traffic and safety issues that impact their community, and organizing members to address these issues as they arise. “I believe in what the group is trying to do,” explained Kim, “which is to keep our community up-to-date on events in our area while having a little fun in the spring with the picnic we put on.” This June picnic is an old-fashioned get-together with games, a barbeque, raffles, and visits from the fire department and local officials. Kim’s duties are to organize, purchase, and prepare the food, as well as all other aspects of the group throughout the year, such as making signs, baking, and helping with fundraisers. If she could have one wish, it would be a large, beautiful community park with everything from a fishing pond to bike trails and a recreation center. This group is not Kim’s only focus. She also serves on Mt. Carmel’s PTSA as vice president of Gradnite 2015, and she works a comic book convention called San Diego Comic Fest, teaching crafts to children and helping to decorate the craft area. She loves volunteering at the Bernardy Center at Children’s Hospital, and she and Mark have been Mr. and Mrs. Claus at holiday parties for the past fourteen years. Her love for children became even clearer when she told us, “Mark and I have two loving, beautiful, and goofy sons, who are the best decisions we ever made!” Kim Stadler loves going on adventures with her family whenever possible, reading ghost stories, and enjoying her own personal Kryptonite: dark chocolate. She also believes in the kindness of people. “Call me a sucker, a fool, but I do believe there is goodness inside of everyone,” she smiled. “Sometimes they just need a little reminder that we’re all in this together.” ¢

The PQ community joined the Ranch House for a full afternoon of free gardening lectures, community garden and historical adobe tours, food, vendors, and entertainment. Gardening lectures covered topics such as composting, fruit tree care, permaculture, goat and chicken care, vegetable gardening, and more. Attendees learned about the types of vegetables and fruit suitable to grow during particular seasons as well as the importance of local, community gardens. The educational and interactive event encouraged PQ residents to put on their gardening gloves and try out their green thumb for the upcoming months ahead. Even those new to gardening left feeling inspired. 

Rising Playwrights

92129 STUDENTS’ SCRIPTS STAND OUT IN PLAYWRIGHTS CONTEST

R

ancho Peñasquitos is home to some rising playwrights. Three students from 92129, Donya Sharifi, Jerusha Israel, and Tricia Mendoza, along with Westview High School student Matthew Maceda, made up eight of the students whose scripts won the Playwright’s Project’s 30th Annual California Young Playwrights Contest. The four students’ scripts were chosen out of a pool of over 500 submissions. Donya wrote her play, Best Friend Mistakes, about a best friend’s betrayal. Jerusha’s play, She Remembers, features an 80-year-old woman questioning the meaning of life when her lifelong friend’s memory fades. Tricia’s play, One Magical Day, centers on a surprisingly young fairy godmother that has a hard time finding a deserving human to help. Coffee, Cream, & Closure was written by Matthew and examines how we look at death. The Playwright’s Project mission is to advance literacy, creativity, and communication by empowering individuals to voice their stories through playwriting and theatre productions. The nonprofit organization conducts an annual California Young Playwrights Contest for writers under the age of 19 to provide a creative outlet that allows them to show off their talents and supports their development as emerging playwrights. The students’ scripts will be presented as part of the Plays by Young Writers Festival from Jan. 22 to Feb. 1 at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre in the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center at The Old Globe. For more information about the festival visit www.playwrightsproject.org/pbyw or call 858-384-2970. 

:::: HOME TIPS

Mostess The Hostess

with the

Guidelines for the Holidays

by TORI MORRISON

I

f you have been chosen to host this year's Christmas dinner or New Year's Eve cocktail party, you've been given one of the best gifts of the holiday season – the chance to share this special time of the year with your loved ones and transform it into an unforgettable occasion. In today's fast-paced society, it can be difficult

to sit down and start planning for the holidays, but it's also a time to embrace that challenge and transform a holiday party into the holiday event of the year. Don't fret, we are here to help you slip into those hostess with the mostess shoes with the ease and grace of a seasoned professional. Here are some tips, tricks, and ideas that guarantee your guests will have a good time this holiday season.

Preparations

Party Time

1. Fancy touches

1. Choose the mood

• Crystal dishes make a great impression, even if they are filled with appetizers you took straight out of the bag. • Play with the center pieces. Accents, including wood, pine cones, ornaments, and candles, offer much more than a traditional bouquet of flowers.

• Always remember that the mood or vibe you give off are what set the tone of the party.

2. Introduce other guests

• It adds to the ambiance, contributes to conversation, and makes everyone feel more comfortable.

• Encourage others to embrace it too and make sure your topics are inclusive.

2. Perfect that playlist

• You’ve brought everyone you love to celebrate this special occasion so make sure they get to know one another.

3. Embrace conversation

3. Love those lists

4. Snap away

• Keep a to-do list on hand or stick Post-it notes around the house to remind you of tasks you need to complete before guests arrive.

• Take photos of the event... heck, take a video! You can use them to review what ended up being successful and what could be improved upon. This will stop you from repeating dishes and let you know which friends get along well.

4. Food selection

• Some of your friends will have special dietary needs, others are just really picky. With food it’s best to stick with simple and delicious. It’s also important to remember your vegan friends and ensure you have fare they will enjoy too.

5. Don’t dirty the dishwasher

• Unload that helpful machine to prepare for the dirty dishes ahead.

50 • 92129Magazine.com • December 2014 | January 2015

5. Be gracious

• Thank your guests for coming by handing out party favors. Not only will this make them feel special, it’s also a great way to end the evening on a positive note. 

Helping Wishes Come True LOCAL STUDENT RAISES MONEY FOR CONGENITAL HEART DEFECT RESEARCH

L

andon Howard, a 2nd grade student at Park Village Elementary, has been raising money for congenital heart disease since age 3. Landon was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which required him to undergo three open heart surgeries. Thankfully, with the help of donations, Landon and his family received various forms of assistance, for which they are extremely grateful. Landon’s mother, Jen Howard, expressed the effect this had on her son, “Landon realizes we have received many things that would not have been available without the donations of others.” It is because of other people’s generosity that the entire family has bonded together to raise awareness and funds for research of congenital heart defects. For the past three years, Landon has been a Rady Children’s Hospital Junior

Miracle Maker, committing to raising at least $500 per year for the Heart Institute at Rady Children’s Hospital. His annual average has been about $1,200. This year, in addition to this fundraiser, Landon has set a goal of $1,500 for the Hope4TinyHearts fundraiser. Last year, Landon’s Wish to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter was granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and he started to work with the foundation as well. This year, he has been asked to help promote the Macy’s Believe letter writing campaign until Dec. 24. The campaign invites believers of all ages to drop off letters to Santa at any Macy’s store in special designated Santa Mail letterboxes. For each letter received, Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish foundation (up to $1 million). 

2014 Sundevils Winter Sports Preview

T

he winter season at Mt. Carmel promises to be an exciting time on the campus. The Palomar league brings a great challenge to our teams. Rising to that challenge has brought on a lot of hard work and dedication. Coach Tim Jollett’s girls basketball team returns a nucleus of talent from a state qualifying team to contest in league and CIF Veteran Coach Chris

Vitous’s boys basketball team also returns many players off a semi-final CIF team. Mark Green, the boys soccer coach, expects to contend for a playoff spot, while Coach Danie Schelhorse’s girls soccer team also will be competing for a playoff opportunity. Wrestling Coach Gail Miller will have his team poised to represent Mt. Carmel in CIF. Newcomer Coach Randy Galza of girls water polo

inherits a young team with a lot of enthusiasm. Athletics at Mt Carmel will strive to uphold “the Sundevil way,” which embraces CIF’s “victory with honor.” Be a part of Mt. Carmel athletics and come out to a game. And remember, it’s great to be a Sundevil. ~ Randy Wright, Athletic Director

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Real Estate Matters

In a Soft Market: Should You Sell or Lease? by SCOTT VOAK

T

his summer was definitely a softer market for 92127 real estate than we have seen in the last couple of years. There were multiple factors, but the resulting price decrease caused some sellers to make a decision whether to accept a low offer or pull the home off the market to rent it for a year or two and hope the market comes back. Many times this decision is made from an emotional point of view – a seller wanting to sell for at least as much as they paid (for example). Using emotion to make a financial decision usually results in a bad decision. Rather than using emotion, it would be better to look at the financial situation and consult your financial advisor. Here’s an example of just one factor that can be very different depending on your situation. Two sellers each own a home worth $700k and paid $725k for the home. Seller 1 has $300,000 in equity while Seller 2 has $30,000 in equity. They both think the market will go up 5% in the next two years and be worth $735k which is more than they paid. Ignoring commissions, fees, and taxes, each believes they will see a $35,000 increase in two years. For Seller 1, that represents a 12% increase in his or her equity over two years. For Seller 2, the increase is 117%. If each seller asks him or herself if they can duplicate that return somewhere else, Seller 1 is much more likely to be able to duplicate a 12% gain over two years than Seller 2 is to duplicate a 117% gain in the same time. Add in the risk of leasing the property (market could fall more, re-painting and re-carpeting after two years, etc.) and it makes a

lot more sense for Seller 1 to sell now, even though the price is lower than desired, while it might make more sense for Seller 2 to lease the property. Please note that this is an example only and is designed to get you thinking about more than what you paid versus what you can sell for. Please consult your real estate, tax, and financial consultants before making a decision of this magnitude.
