Downsizing…
F
Derrick Breaux Publisher
or the past six years, my family and I have lived in the same house. This might not sound like anything out of the ordinary. In fact, it may sound quite normal. However, after taking out a notepad and spending some time putting the pencil to the paper, I came to the realization of a few things. For starters, this was the 23rd house that I have called home. With all of the moving around you would think that I was raised in a military family, but most of the moves were actually the product of my parents climbing the corporate ladder over the years. After further review, I calculated that this was the longest that I have ever lived in one house. In terms of square footage, it is also the largest house that I have ever called home. Over the years, we have been blessed with a growing family and plenty of visitors – both short-term and long-term. Before my mother passed away in 2010, she had a room at our house. For several years when my brother was touring the world with his rock band, he also had a room to come home to for short stays. Our kids referred to it as Tyler’s room even though he only used it a couple months a year. With our daughter recently moving out (well, sort of) and living in the dorms this year, my wife and I started discussing the possibility of downsizing. We recently pulled the trigger and made the move to my 24th house – a smaller home. Still having our two little kiddos at home, we weren’t brave enough to downsize in number of bedrooms, but we reduced our square footage by nearly 40% with this move. I’m still trying to figure out if reducing our square footage is the same thing as reducing our carbon footprint. Probably not! Preparing for any move can be a daunting task. Preparing for a move to a smaller house was downright overwhelming and consuming. I am amazed at how much “stuff” our family has accumulated over the past decade. We have spent the better part of a month making trips to the Salvation Army and the Goodwill donation centers. I’m on a first name basis with a couple of the kind employees that work there. My wife and I have decided to use this move as a family project – I’ll stop short of calling it a learning experience because that gives it more credit than necessary. The word “purge” has become a common conversational theme with our kids. Although they don’t like parting ways with the toys that they haven’t touched in years – but somehow fall in love with all over again when they find them tucked away in a closet or box – they are somewhat satisfied knowing that the unused toys are being donated, and children that may not have as many toys will get to play with them. We reinforce this with our kids each time we visit the donation centers, and I personally feel a certain sense of “parental” accomplishment in doing so. Even though we aren’t quite finished with our moving and purging at the time that I am writing this, it sure does feel great to know that we are entering into the New Year a lot lighter than before. It feels good to get rid of some excess and simplify things. Happy New Year! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

mechanical design engineer by trade, Ron Lawrence is recognized on 12 U.S. patents and has consulted for over 300 companies. While he specializes in injection molded projects in his career, his greatest passion may be his work “off the clock.” A longtime Rancho Peñasquitos resident, Ron Lawrence has been involved with the Boy Scouts since his childhood, starting as a Cub Scout in 1962 and serving as Troopmaster of Troop 648 since 2000. Ron began Boy Scouts when his father helped him build a pinewood derby car. He won first place and was hooked. “I stayed in Boy Scouts until I aged out at 18 years old and have a lot of fond memories, but the best memories are those of trips that went wrong,” Ron reminisced. favorite trip to Anza Borrego included a missing scout, a flat tire, an illegal campfire, and run-ins with law enforcement. “No one was hurt, it was just a lot of funny circumstances that went wrong,” Ron laughed. These memories were the reason Ron returned to scouting as an adult. As a husband and father of three, Ron recognized scouting as a great way to spend time with his son. “Becoming a scoutmaster was very easy when I remembered how much scouting molded my life, and I wanted to repay the same to my son and his friends,” Ron explained. Over the last 15 years, Ron has assisted 53 young men – his son included – in attaining their Eagle Scout rank, the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts. Ron was also recently awarded San Diego’s Scoutmaster of the Year. But the best rewards of the position cannot be officially recognized. “The most amazing sight is to watch a young scout of 11 years young to go from wild amazement, bouncing off the walls with energy to a reliable, articulate, confident 18-year-young Eagle Scout,” he shared. For Ron and his son, the progression is captured in two photos: their first father-son campout and their final day of a 12-day backpack trip atop a mountain at sunrise. In Ron’s newest role with the Boy Scouts, he will work with new scouts to ensure they have the basic scout skills. He will also begin working on his “honey-do list” and pick up a few of his old hobbies. In the meantime, “you can catch me and my dog Diesel in front of Starbucks in the morning from 6 to 7 a.m. every day,” Ron smiled. ¢

he 2nd Annual San Diego Holiday Half Marathon challenged runners on a 13.1 mile course that kicked off in Rancho Peñasquitos near Carmel Mountain Rd., or known to runners as the section of the course with the “real hill.” Runners followed the course along the 56 bike path in the cool morning air for some time until reaching Torrey Pines State Reserve, where the marathon finished. Participants received plenty of support from fans and volunteers who cheered them on, offered water and oranges, or ran along with them, contributing to a positive race experience for all. Finisher’s medals, swag bags, shirts, and more were given to entrants upon completion. Congratulations to the top overall male and female finishers Maria Castaneda, Jordan Chipangama, Darcy Davidson, Tommi Hytönen, Ariana Hilborn, Eulogio Rodriguez, Marie Schaper, and Justin Turner. :::: PQ COUNCIL CONNECTION
What’s New in
PQ?
by MICHELLE O’CONNOR-RATCLIFF Special to 92129 Magazine
“I
sure would love to make PQ better by… oh, never mind. It’s too expensive.” Hold it right there! The PQ Town Council loves that kind of inspiration and wants to help you make it happen. Your Town Council regularly awards grants to PQ community members for activities that provide some type of community service. Take a look at the diversity of projects the Town Council was proud to support in 2014: • Brian Noblitt designed and built a lost and found box for Los Peñasquitos Elementary to replace the old ones that were falling apart. • Annelise Morgan purchased graphing calculators to establish a lending library at Mt. Carmel where these expensive academic tools can be checked out by students who might otherwise face too great a financial strain to enroll in the higher level math courses that require them. • The library’s summer reading program for children and adults encouraged everyone to read for pleasure during the school break. • Alexander Paul undertook the enormous project of repainting an accessibility ramp handrail at Mesa Verde Middle School. • To improve student safety and program efficiency, Los Peñasquitos’ BLAST afterschool program purchased new walkie talkies for supervisors. • Mt. Carmel choir’s family-friendly Madrigal Dinner show ticket prices stayed affordable for the community. • The Urban Corps will upgrade the PQ Dog Park surface with durable, low-maintenance decomposed granite.

S
ixteen-year-old Garrett Weir has big dreams for his future. “My first choice for a career is to perform on the stage or screen or to be a sportscaster,” said Garrett. But Garrett – a sophomore at Mt. Carmel High School – is already a star in his own right. Not only is he an honor roll student currently holding a 4.2 GPA, but also a talented performer, winning Mt. Carmel Choir’s Most Promising Freshman Award and being named as a nominee for a National Youth Arts Award for his various theatre roles. Garrett’s love for the spotlight came at a young age. “I grew up with a very musical background, taking piano and voice lessons,” Garrett explained. “My mother is a voice teacher and my sister and brother both were in classical ensemble and musical theater productions.” Since his start, Garrett has had many leading and supporting lead roles in acting. “Hearing the audience applaud you after a performance is one of the greatest feelings in the world and is very inspiring to me,” he shared. “It makes me want to continue acting and singing.” But academics and performing aren’t the only areas in which Garrett excels – he is also an accomplished Boy Scout. “I have been a scout since I was in 1st grade,” stated Garrett. Robotics Teams Excel
PQ TEAMS IMPRESS AT FIRST COMPETITIONS
T
wo teams from 92129, the Penguin Professors and PQ Robotics, impressed judges and parents alike at the FIRST Lego League of Southern California Qualifier and Championship competitions. Team Penguin Professors, consisting of fourth and fifth graders, competed against several middle school kids and took home first prize in Programming within the Robot Design category at the championship competition. The team was the youngest team, competing against 56 other teams from Southern California. PQ Robotics put in hard work and lots of teamwork and took home a first place trophy for Core Values at the High Tech High qualifier tournament and snagged a trip to the Southern California qualifier at Legoland. This year marked the first time the group of fourth graders competed at this level, entering the season as rookies.
According to the Penguin Professors, the competition really fostered a sense of teamwork. They also learned important skills like how to brainstorm, research, and make presentations. For PQ Robotics coaches Jose Arciaga and Purav Desai, the 2014 First Lego League season was a chance not only to teach kids how to program but how to help them think outside of the box, learn from one another, get excited about technology, and instill a sense of teamwork. FIRST Lego League introduces younger students to realworld engineering challenges. Students must use their creativity, critical thinking skills, and ability to work together to figure out a solution. More information about FIRST Lego League can be found online at www.california.legoland.com.

n 1994, Dave and Jill met at the downtown courthouse. An experienced bailiff, Dave aided Jill on a last-minute case she hadn't dealt with before. Within months they began dating and married three years later. When their children turned three and one, they moved to Torrey Highlands for the great

schools, the canyon location, and the warm, family-friendly community. “We have seen coyotes, bobcats, and deer right behind our backyard. It’s a real treat to be so close to nature and wildlife,” marveled Jill. With their house bordering the Del Mar Mesa Preserve, the Dicarlos take advantage of the hiking and biking trails.
Both children thrive in Torrey Highlands. Jenna, an avid reader and talented writer, participates in Westview High School’s theatre. She is also a Girl Scout, a Helen Woodward Animal Center volunteer, and a karate blue belt striving for black. Additionally, Jenna has donated 10 inches of her hair

to Locks for Love three times. Ashley joined Mesa Verde Middle School’s ASB program and participates in lacrosse, soccer, and cheer. The entire family volunteers. Both girls baked goods to aid tsunami victims and collect stuffed animals each Christmas to support Children’s Hospital. Jill gives school presentations in criminal law, coaches sports, is treasurer of Jenna’s Girl Scout troop, a board member of her neighborhood HOA, chaperones school activities, and volunteers at a wildlife rehab center. Dave gives school presentations regarding community safety, policing and drug prevention, in addition to volunteering for the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run, a wildlife center, and StarPal United for Youth. Family traditions abound in the DiCarlo family. Each year they create an elaborate haunted house for neighbors and host dodge ball games at Christmas. After Jenna won the weekly UT cartoon caption contest, the family began submitting entries. They also love adventurous vacations that include hiking, river rafting, and zip lining. On a zip line trip at Yellowstone National Park, “[Ashley] got an award for the best and longest scream of the year,” reminisced Jill. Since Dave and Jill see a lot of hardship in their current jobs, they encourage fun within their household. They play sports, board and guessing games, have family competitions, watch TV shows and football together, and play pranks on each other. A fake tarantula terrorizes the household, but the best prank involved dad biting a caramel onion that looked like an apple. His look was priceless. ¢

he Improv Club at Mt. Carmel High School has been around for over a decade, garnering several awards and becoming a favorite “mustsee” on campus for students and teachers alike. The school recently held a match that had the audience roaring. The non-scripted, totally off the top of your head humor in improv is outrageously entertaining to watch and must be witnessed to fully appreciate it as an art form. In a high school match, two teams face off against each other in a match of wit, style, and silliness. Suggestions from the audience are encouraged and even often incorporated midsentence, mid-thought, or turned into a completely different scene. Mt. Carmel High School’s team consists of 30 members, a team captain, senior Reed Wagner, and a team coach, Chanel Mize. Be sure to visit www.facebook.com/ pages/mt-carmel-high-school-improv for more details about the club and a schedule of upcoming games and events.

Voices for Children Seeks Volunteers
Voices for Children, a local nonprofit working to transform the lives of abused children, is looking for volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). A CASA is a trained volunteer matched with a child in the foster care system – the CASA gets to know the child, researches their particular situation, and advocates on the child’s behalf in court. CASAs often become one of the only stable adult presences in the foster children’s lives and form lifelong bonds. Anyone with a willingness to help can become a CASA as long as they’re over 21 and have 10 to 15 hours per month to devote to the child. Voices for Children provides training and a Juvenile Court judge authorizes the CASA to access the child’s records. Voices for Children is particularly seeking men and Spanish speakers to volunteer. To learn more about Voices for Children or sign up for a free information session visit www.speakupnow.org.
San Diego Talent Jessica Sanchez Visits Home
Local talent Jessica Sanchez, finalist on American Idol Season 11, recently spread some sweet holiday cheer to her hometown community with the help of M&M’S Crispy. Sanchez returned to San Diego to surprise fans with holiday caroling and a special delivery of the newly relaunched candy. Born and raised in Chula Vista, Jessica has enjoyed singing since she was very young. Before American Idol, Jessica represented San Diego on shows like Showtime at the Apollo and America’s Got Talent. While a contestant on American Idol, Jessica experienced an outpour of love and support from neighborhoods all over San Diego. After making it to the final two on the show, Jessica eventually signed a record deal with Interscope records and recently released a new song “This Love.” “The fact that I get to put out something that’s all my own is so exciting,” she gushed. “Music has always been what I want to do with my life, and these songs are all me.”
Dedicated Scout Completes Eagle Project
Leadership skills drew Boy Scout Kyle Cusack of Troop 667 to scouting, a passion that gives him the opportunity to help the community. The enthusiastic Boy Scout just completed his Eagle Project: 10 benches for the sixth grade camper program at Camp Cuyamaca. Kyle went through the necessary steps to complete his project, which included project management, budgeting, fundraising, organizing labor, executing the work, and delivery. According to Kyle, the project took over eight months to finish. He described the process, “I leveraged the annual troop popcorn sales event to partially fund my project. I also worked over three weekends to cut and prepare lumber and to build templates and jigs that aided the construction.” Kyle would like to thank the PQ residents for the donations they made towards his project as well as the Boy Scouts and friends who assisted with the project.

he Scripps Rock Dental family is excited to start a new year of giving back to the community they call home. Owners Dr. Anthony E. Hatch and Dr. Shivi Gupta both love living in such a family-oriented, close-knit, and health-conscious community, and have made those qualities the foundation of their practice. Along with Dr. Heather Russell and the rest of the enthusiastic staff, they run an all-service dental office with a focus on patient comfort and a special niche in same-day dentistry. “We are very committed to excellence in our dentistry and we refuse to outsource to outside dental labs,” explained Dr. Hatch. “Instead we choose to take the responsibility for the perfect fit, function, and aesthetics ourselves.” Their commitment to excellence inspires their commitment to education, and they embrace growth and change as opportunities to continually improve the patient experience. The entire staff seeks opportunities to expand their dental skills, as well as taking courses in customer service and communication. “We are a dental practice of perpetual learners,” said Dr. Hatch. All that education is geared towards providing the best possible atmosphere and results for patients. Their goal is to make a lasting impact on patients’ health. Dr. Hatch explained, “We want our patients to not have to worry about their dental health as they grow and age, enjoying a good meal with a confident smile.” Scripps Rock Dental also makes a lasting impact on the broader community. For the last three years, they have hosted a car show and silent auction to benefit GenerateHope, a San Diego-based women’s shelter. Over those three years, Scripps Rock Dental has donated over $10,000 and another $10,000 worth of free dental treatment for all the women living at the home. “The dental care they have faithfully provided to our women not only helps their health, but also their self-esteem,” shared Susan Munsey, Executive Director of GenerateHope. The office participates in other charities, including recent donations to Toys for Tots and Becky’s Gift. “We also have donated to help build a dental clinic in the Veteran’s Village in San Diego,” said Dr. Hatch.“All the doctors donate time to provide dental care to our veterans and the less fortunate throughout the year. We hold giving back as a cornerstone of the practice.”

ecreation centers and parks contribute to the overall well-being of a community. They provide people with the opportunity to be active, facilitate social interaction, create organized and engaging healthy activities, keep the environment healthy, and much more. Read on as we speak with Mary Ngai, Area Manager, about the history of Canyonside Park and Recreation Center, and how both have come to embody a real sense of PQ community pride.
:::: COVER FEATURE
Q&A with Area Manager, MARY NGAI
What is the history behind Canyonside Park and Recreation Center? The first phase of the park was opened in November of 1983. This included one field and tennis courts. Eventually the recreation center, additional fields, and tennis courts were added.
How has the park evolved over time? Canyonside Park was built in many phases. Field number one and the tennis courts were built first, and then construction on the recreation center started. The other phases included the tot lot and the middle fields, then additional tennis courts and the back fields. Last year two tennis courts were constructed.
Why is the park and recreation center so vital to the PQ community? The park is important because it has so many fields and is home to the Peñasquitos Girls Softball League, Peñasquitos Little League, and youth soccer teams. Having so many fields allows the leagues to play many games during the same day, which builds a sense of community. The recreation center offers the same atmosphere. Many families bring their children to the recreation center for gymnastics, dance, karate, and more. The families get to know each other and the children enjoy themselves.
Please elaborate on the types of facilities available at the park and recreation center. What do they offer the public?
What were some of the highlights of the opening event? The day was spent welcoming and celebrating with the community; the construction had finally ended and the center was showcased as an inviting place for the entire family. The game room was opened for kids to have a place to play, the gymnastics program was introduced with all of the fantastic new equipment, and other programs such as dance and art were introduced and ready to engage the community.
The recreation center has a large gym that is used for gymnastics and basketball. There is also a multipurpose room, craft room, and game room that are used for art, martial arts, dance, and preschool programs. The rooms are also available for community group meetings and private rentals. All the facilities are available for the public’s use or for league play. The center director can let you know if the facility is available and what the fee is. The tennis courts are operated by the Rancho Peñasquitos Tennis Club. The courts are open to the public for a fee or yearly membership.
What are some of the unique aspects or programs available? A preschool program and afterschool enrichment program are offered five days a week.
36 • 92129Magazine.com • February | March 2015
There is also a martial arts class, fine arts class, and Parent’s Night Out. The tennis courts are open year-round.
What are some of your most popular programs? What does the community enjoy most about these programs? As for the classes, the recreation centers offers the Parent’s Night Out program, which is very popular as well as martial arts, preschool, art and dance programs. The programs are very affordable for the community and I think PQ residents enjoy having these programs close to home.
Are there any specific resources or programs available for children, teens, adults, or seniors? There are many programs for children – preschool, art, martial arts, and Parent’s Night Out. The adult programs that are offered are martial arts and a free yoga class on Saturday mornings. There are many children’s programs including full day programs for preschool through elementary school age in the summer. The YMCA uses the gym for a very popular gymnastics program. A full listing of programs and events can be found on the City’s website at www.sandiego.gov.
Are there any facilities for pets? Dogs must be on a leash at all times at Canyonside Park and all the other parks in Rancho Peñasquitos except for Linear Off Leash Dog Park on Salmon River Rd. People are welcome to walk their dogs on leash at Canyonside Park.
What is your role? What are your responsibilities? I am the area manager. I oversee the maintenance and operations of all the parks, recreation centers, and skate park in Rancho Peñasquitos. I make sure that the parks are well maintained and safe for the public’s use.

What’s in store for the future of both the center and the park? Any new developments in the works? A new children’s playground is planned to be built in the next year or two as well as an overflow parking lot.
How is the park and recreation center funded? The park and recreation center is funded through the City of San Diego’s general fund. Many of the programs are funded by the Rancho Peñasquitos Recreation Council.
What types of green efforts have been made at the park in terms of recycling projects, water conservation, etc.? There are two recycling bins at the park. Glass, paper, and aluminum are accepted. The bins are available 24 hours a day. The park is irrigated with recycled water and the recreation center has solar panels for electricity. Environmental Services offers Christmas tree recycling in the parking lot after Christmas through January.
What is the most memorable part of working at the recreation center and park? I enjoy working with the representatives from all the community organizations. They all work well together sharing field space and are willing to volunteer at the special events that are held throughout the year. Their groups get along very well which is very nice.

How does the center and park stay connected with the PQ Community? The Rancho Peñasquitos Recreation Council is an advisory board to the Park and Recreation Department. The council is made up of community members, all the youth sports groups, the Rancho Family YMCA, Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council and Planning Group. The council meets once a month and information is shared at these meetings.
What would you say the recreation center/park is best known for? The park is known for all of the sports groups that use the park and recreation center. This includes cricket, soccer, softball, baseball, YMCA gymnastics, and tennis. The groups work extremely well with each other, sharing fields and doing what is best for all the participants not just the people involved in their organization.
Do you have any upcoming events in February and March that you would like our readers to be aware of? The annual spring egg hunts will be held at the end of March at South Village Park, Rolling Hills Park, Peñasquitos Creek Park, and Ridgewood Park. The staff at Canyonside Recreation Center teams up with the staff at Hilltop Park to put on some very popular and well attended special events. The largest event is held on the first Saturday of December at Hilltop Park. The Rancho Peñasquitos Recreation Council funds the event and purchases 70 tons of snow. There are carriage rides, crafts, giant slides, and a children’s train ride to name a few highlights of the event. In August, a Polynesian Getaway is held at Hilltop Park. There is a Hawaiian meal and dancers. Both of these are great family events. Last summer, a new Parks Fit program was offered in which participants pledged to walk or swim one mile a day for 30 days. Community members enjoyed the challenge and Canyonside Recreation Center had one of the highest levels of participation in the city.

5Habits Heart-Healthy
by MARK WUCHNER, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo
February is American Heart Month, so give yourself some love and assess if your lifestyle is heart-healthy. Prevention is key to keeping your heart pumping optimally, and these good habits can help keep your heart strong. 1. Exercise regularly. Your heart is a muscle that needs to be worked as consistently as any other muscle to stay strong. Doing aerobic exercise on most days of the week for 30 to 60 minutes helps your heart work efficiently. 2. Eat a balanced diet. According to the U.S. government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans, eating right for your heart means including fruits and veggies, low-fat dairy, poultry, fish, and nuts in your diet. Avoid red meat, processed foods, and foods high in sodium.

3. Manage your blood pressure. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a major risk factor for heart disease. Keeping your blood pressure within your healthy range reduces strain on your heart and arteries to keep you healthy. Incorporating the first two healthy habits into your routine, consistent exercise and eating well, will help keep your blood pressure in check. Managing your stress, limiting alcohol, and avoiding tobacco smoke are also important.
Be among the first to visit the new Prebys Cardiovascular Institute – San Diego’s largest and most comprehensive hospital dedicated to heart care. In honor of its grand opening, Scripps is hosting a community celebration on March 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Join us for tours, refreshments, family activities, and a heart health fair.
4. Lose weight if needed. Don’t let the holiday pounds linger. Too much weight puts you at a higher risk for many health problems, including heart disease.
The 383,000-square-foot, seven-story building is on the campus of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and will feature private rooms, intensive care beds, operating rooms, and cardiac catheterization labs.
5. Get enough sleep. Your heart is significantly impacted when your body doesn’t get enough sleep – just as your body needs rest, so does your heart. Lack of a good night’s sleep means your heart rate and blood pressure stay elevated instead of fluctuating normally. While the right amount of sleep varies from person to person, most people need six to eight hours of sleep each day.
Every year, more than 76,000 patients receive their heart care from Scripps. And Scripps is the only cardiovascular program in the region ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 20 in the country. Visit www.scripps.org or call 1-800-SCRIPPS (727-4777) for more information.

WHALE WATCHING Gray Whales Travel Through San Diegan Waters on Their Winter Migration by LAINEY KRAL
S
urfers and sailors aren’t the only ones who enjoy San Diego’s offshore playground, even in the depths of winter. Every year the eastern Pacific population of gray whales travels in small groups down the North American coastline towards the warm lagoons of the Baja California peninsula. Their annual voyage is considered the longest migration of any mammal. San Diegans are lucky to be able to witness this incredible venture – many gray whales can be seen here from midDecember through January, and from February through April on the return journey north. Gray whales typically span 49 feet in length and can weigh up to 40 tons. They can be recognized by distinctive light gray patterns on their dark gray skin. They also have a series of raised bumps on their backs, known as a dorsal ridge, rather than a dorsal fin. Gray whales live in two populations on either side of the Pacific – the western population is critically endangered with approximately 130 individuals, while the eastern population off the North American coastline has over 20,000 individuals. The eastern population spends much of the year in Alaskan waters in between migrations to Baja California. Want to see our giant visitors for yourself? There are plenty of ways to do so by land or sea. If you’re watching from shore, try to schedule your viewing between mid-December and mid-February, when

the whales travel closer to land. Great spots include the Birch Aquarium, Cabrillo National Monument, Scripps Park above La Jolla Cove, and Torrey Pines State Reserve. Gray whales dive for three to six minutes at a time before coming to the surface to breathe. They’ll blow three to five times before diving back down – when out watching, scan the water for spouts to find whales before pulling out the binoculars for a better view. For a closer vantage point, there are quite a few options to get out on the water. Many whale watching cruises offer on-board guides who can tell you everything you want to know about the guests of honor, plus guaranteed sightings or you get a second trip free. If you’re looking for an even closer encounter, try a tour that takes you out on a smaller, faster vessel – or even a kayak tour that lets you paddle within 50 feet of the giant mammals.

She continued, “Some have danced professionally on cruise ships, with Disney, in musicals, and many other ventures.” The staff is completely committed to helping dancers set goals and then attain them. “The entire staff feels such a great sense of pride when a dancer accomplishes a goal,” shared DeLaney. Eagle Court of Honor Held on USS Midway FIVE BOY SCOUTS FROM TROOP 622 HONORED ON HISTORIC WARSHIP
T
roop 622 located in 92129 recently held an Eagle Court of Honor Held on the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum to honor Boy Scouts Nicholas Bell, Nicholas Johnson, Austin Pardi, Alex Vu, and Garrett Weir. The ceremony occurred 11 years after Garrett fell from the ship’s hangar deck when he was only five years old! In the 44-year history of Troop 622, 147 Boy Scouts have earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and this ceremony was the troop’s first Eagle Court of Honor to be held on the USS Midway. According to the troop, highlights of the ceremony included experiencing the “Midway Magic” firsthand. The expression comes from the warship’s history, as the ship sailed the seas for humanitarian purposes. According to Garrett’s mother, Marie, “From the Battle of the Midway exhibit with two planes that were actually flown in during the battle to how beautifully lit up the Midway was as she rested on the pier, the whole event just had to be experienced live and in person.”
Each Boy Scout put in a great amount of time, effort, and commitment to complete his Eagle Scout Project. Nicholas Bell, who is very passionate about water polo, refurbished a moveable scoring table for his high school water polo team. Nicholas Johnson created a video to train altar servers at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic
Church, where he serves as an altar boy. Austin Pardi revamped Westview High School’s water polo and swim teams’ locker rooms, Alex Vu built two trail heads for the Carmel Valley Preserve, and Garrett Weir constructed a Periaktoi or theatrical set piece for Black Mountain Middle School’s music/drama department.

INSPIRING LOVING ACTS
LOCAL WOMAN STRIVES TO IMPROVE THE WORLD THROUGH ACTS OF KINDNESS by AMY LEHRER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography
A
s a key leader and volunteer at Existence Church, Mikala Janse van Rensburg supports worthy causes. She coordinated an event to combat human trafficking in San Diego that allowed her to donate $12,000 to 10 local organizations, and this summer she plans to coordinate an XRun to X out human trafficking of children. As a guest speaker for San Diego mom groups, she teaches moms to give back to their communities in front of their children. Additionally, she coordinated an outreach project that provided 300 pairs of shoes, sweaters, and hygiene kits to the homeless for this past winter season. Being a global citizen motivates and excites Mikala. Growing up in a poor rural Texas town taught her to be grateful for what she had and inspired her to help others in need. This past summer, she participated in a week-long mission trip to the Dominican Republic. She upgraded basketball courts and baseball fields, as well as building pulpits for surrounding churches that provided food and education for those in need. Her trip inspired her to give even more. She is currently coordinating an effort to sponsor children through Compassion International. The goal is to provide five long-term sponsorships to children from countries that are in desperate need of food, shelter, medical care, and education.
Inspired by wanting her own boys to become good people, Mikala began weeKIND. She hopes children demonstrating kindness will create a kinder future and a kindness generation. She’s coordinated play/serve dates, interactive kindness scavenger hunts, and 25 Days of Kindness. Children pass on a “weeKIND elf” with their act of kindness and request others pass it along with their next act of kindness. Toy, clothing, and money donations are welcome along with volunteers to plan events or advertise this movement via social media. Mikala exclaimed, “The more people involved the greater impact we can make!” Her movement helps parents raise their children to be compassionate, future leaders. “Spending time with my family and doing good deeds together warms and fills my heart more than anything else in this world,” shared Mikala. Her husband, Wesley, also serves at her church and spends loving time with their boys. They’ve begun geocaching with a twist. They’ve hidden Kind Cache. They leave a nice note for someone and request the recipient leave another in turn. And because they have so much love to share, they are investigating fostering/adopting a child through Olive Crest. ¢

Sean Casey’s Fighting Spirit LOCAL STUDENT BATTLES ADVERSITY AND FINDS WAYS TO HELP OTHERS IN NEED
S
ean Casey, a 15-year-old freshman at Mt. Carmel High School, has inspired his family, friends, and community with his ability to remain steadfast in the face of adversity. The avid sports player was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome in May 2013, a debilitating illness that nearly paralyzed him. Doctors informed him that it would be a year before he could play sports again. That didn’t stop Sean though, and by October 2013 he had a spot on the MCHS football team. Unfortunately, Sean was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia shortly after and could not play in a single game, but Sean wasn’t going to give up so easily. His mother shared, “After he heard of his diagnosis he never once believed it was unbeatable.” The Casey family planned a bone marrow drive recently to help their son, who decided he’d organize a toy drive at the same time to collect toys for Rady Children’s hospital’s Hematology/Oncology clinic. His mother proudly stated, “When we were planning the blood drive all he wanted to do was collect toys for other kids with cancer and blood disorders.” The bone marrow drive was a huge success, with over 70 people added to the national bone marrow registry, and Sean collected over 300 toys for Rady Children’s hospital. The Casey family would like to thank the PQ community for all of their support, including all the volunteers and businesses that helped with the bone marrow drive. Visit www.bethematch.org to find out more information about becoming a bone marrow donor.

Tips for
Greening Your Spring
Cleaning by TORI MORRISON
Y
ou stepped into 2015 with a few resolutions – most likely including the promise to clean your house for spring. Start off fresh this year by making a conscious decision to invest yourself into green spring cleaning. It’s much more environmentally friendly and safer for you and your loved ones. Here’s a list of eight ways you can reduce waste, use fewer toxic chemicals, and create a healthier living environment all year long. So put on those microfiber gloves and let’s get that house squeaky clean and green!
1. Organize, Reduce, and Recycle The best way to start your spring cleaning is by organizing and getting rid of the excess clutter in the house. Be sure to donate or recycle used clothing, books, toys, kitchen supplies, and more to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Recycle anything you cannot donate, making sure that the items are recyclable first. 2. Clean Naturally Swap out cleaning products that contain chemicals with a natural alternative. Vinegar can be used to disinfect, eliminate odors, and even get rid of stains. Baking soda can be combined with water and used to clean surfaces, and lemon juice can be mixed with salt to form a paste that will clean brass, copper, or stainless-steel surfaces or fixtures. 3. Reduce Waste Instead of wasting an entire roll of paper towels wiping down rooms, aim for a no-waste clean by using microfiber cloths, sponges, or reusable mops. 4. Hot Water Away You’d be amazed at how much cleaning you can do with just water.
50 • 92129Magazine.com • February | March 2015
Boiling water can be used to clean the tub, keep drains clear, and even get rid of stains. 5. Save Energy Get rid of the clutter on the top of your refrigerator. Appliances, cereal boxes, and kitchen utensils actually prevent heat from venting properly, and this causes the appliance to waste more energy. 6. Use Natural Air Fresheners Avoid synthetic air fresheners. Investing in house plants is a great way to improve the quality of air inside a home. Seek out natural air fresheners with lilacs or lemons. 7. Hang Up Your Clothes Instead of tossing your damp clothes into the dryer, hang them outside on the line. Line-drying uses no energy (except for a little work on your part) and leaves clothes smelling fresh. 8. Welcome Fresh Air Cycle out stale air by opening your windows and letting the fresh air indoors. There’s nothing like some fresh air during springtime.
Remembering Larry Himmel
HONORING THE MEMORY OF SAN DIEGO’S BELOVED REPORTER photo by Spark Photography
L
arry Himmel, longtime KFMB/Channel 8 reporter, television broadcaster, San Diego personality, and close friend to ZCode Media, recently passed away after his brave battle with cancer. Larry had been a loyal local reporter for the station since 1979, bringing an unparalleled sense of humor and artistry to the air. The news of Larry’s passing spread during Channel 8’s 11 p.m. broadcast in which Larry’s co-workers reminisced and shared stories about their time with him. As a reporter, Larry was larger than life and extremely well-respected in his field. He is known as one of the best feature reporters in his industry and is the recipient of over a dozen Emmy Awards. He was the type of reporter that went above and beyond to deliver a story. During the 2007 wildfires, Larry gained national attention for famously reporting in front his burning home in 92127. In 2012, when 92127 Magazine’s cover feature included Larry, his family and his story of that day, he discussed the events that led up to the chilling and heartbreaking live report. A friend of the ZCode Media family, Larry was a supporter of the local magazines and community news as a whole. Known for his quirky and off-beat video stories, he featured ZCode’s magazines in a report about the five year anniversary of the Witch Creek Fire. CBS has produced a touching video tribute to Larry on its site. It can be accessed at www.cbs8.com/story/26867145/remembering-larry-himmel. Guests are encouraged to sign the guest book in honor of one of San Diego’s legendary reporters.

ABC CHILDREN’S DENTISTRY KEEPS CHILDREN’S SMILES SHINING BIG AND BRIGHT
by TORI MORRISON | photos by Tyler McElhaney
ABC
Children’s Dentistry, a private dental practice located in Rancho Peñasquitos, has made delivering individualized, gentle dental care in a child-friendly and fun environment to children and teens its primary mission. The practice focuses on building positive memories during dental visits for children and offers specialty care to all patients. Owner Dr. Roya Sadrian elaborated, “Unlike most pediatric dental offices in San Diego which run like a clinic, seeing lots of patients at a time, we pride ourselves on being a private practice, giving each and every child individual and personal attention.” She continued, “The office is designed to reduce the child’s anxiety and our staff is specifically trained to understand children’s behavior and anticipate their reaction, thus creating a more pleasant experience.” The practice takes care of a variety of children’s dental needs, including dental hygiene, nutrition counseling, orthodontic evaluation, and more.
Dr. Sadrian brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the practice. She obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Washington, received her Pediatric Dentistry Specialty from the University of Maryland, and worked for several years as an associate before opening ABC Children’s Dentistry in 2004 in San Diego where her family resides. The staff at the practice have a combined total of over 20 years of pediatric dental experience, and according to Dr. Sadrian, “absolutely love working with children.” Together Dr. Sadrian and the staff ensure their patients’ needs always come first. The practice has an inviting reception area with games and toys and movies are offered to patients during their visit. Most importantly, the practice strives to make the overall experience for the patient positive. “We want the patient to leave the office with a sense of self-confidence and accomplishment,” stated Dr. Sadrian. “And we want them to stay motivated to continue to practice good dental habits for years to come.”

2015 Wolverines Spring Sports Preview
T
he Westview Wolverines are excited to launch the 2015 spring sports season. The Wolverines promise to remain competitive while participating in the always challenging Palomar League and ultimately in the CIF championships. We are very proud of the three coaches on our spring staff who were instrumental in the development of Westview academic and
athletic traditions. The coaches have been with the school since it started in 2002 and are as follows: baseball coach Beau Champoux, track and field coach Tim Medlock, and boys volleyball coach Steve McLaughlin. The coaches will lead the Wolverines in their 13th seasons at the helm. Taking over the reins of the Wolverine swim and dive program will be Amy Alexander. With many
capable returning players, the Wolverines are looking forward to capitalizing on their off-season workouts and competitive past experiences. Please visit the Westview website for specific tryout and schedule information. Thank you for your support and Go Westview! ~ Chris Carter, Athletic Director

Real Estate Matters
Investing in San Diego Real Estate by SCOTT VOAK
E
ver since I had my radio show, people call me to talk about investing in San Diego real estate. Many times they are looking for the equivalent of a real estate unicorn: 20% down, positive cash flow, near the water. Like the unicorn, if you see one of these, be suspicious. Unlike children’s stories, real estate fairy tales don’t usually end well. Investing in San Diego real estate usually means accepting lower returns for being in a better location. While this makes a lot of sense for where you decide to live, it’s not the best strategy for investing. I know. You’re incredulous. A real estate broker advising you not to invest in real estate? Four years ago, there was one investment I thought was suitable for individuals. Two- to four-unit properties in San Diego were generating 10% positive cash return the first year. Now, prices are up a lot more than rents are and the investment doesn’t make sense. One investment I am very leery of for novice investors is house flipping. People made a lot of money flipping houses all over the country. When an investment becomes so popular that TV shows are made following the investors around, you might think a few too many people may get involved. And when the people who have made a lot of money doing the investment stop investing and start offering seminars so you too can be rich, the party is over. Smart investors don’t train their competition if they can still make money investing.
Yes, I am skeptical on San Diego investment property (unless you already own it). Does that mean I am down on San Diego real estate? Not at all. San Diego is a great place to live and I think our real estate values will grow at a steady (albeit slower) rate. I think it’s a great time to move out of renting and purchase a home (or purchase a larger home) in San Diego so you can put down roots with your family. I just don’t think it is the smartest way to invest your extra cash right now.
