:::: FROM THE PUBLISHER Community. Family. Fun. We all live in this part of San Diego County because these things are important to us. And 92129 Magazine reflects the same ideals and interests. Whether it’s details on a premier local organization such as the Rancho Family YMCA (page 20) or getting to know your neighbors (page 14), and celebrating the best of our local youth (page 22), we plan to give you — in every issue — a slice of the lifestyle you love. You can sample a local resident’s favorite recipe for a backyard cookout, learn about close-to-home outdoor fun spots, and learn about a lot of people who live and work right here in your neighborhood. Plus, you’ll see lots of names and faces of local people playing, participating in activities and attending local events. By picking up the latest issue of 92129 Magazine — or checking out www.92129Magazine.com — you can know everything going on in the area, from the school schedules to special events, from youth sports to clubs and organizations. And we encourage you to tell us what you think, what you want to see and read in your local publication, and always offer suggestions on who and what we should put in the local spotlight. If it’s happening here, we plan to be a part of it. Because, just like you, we’re neighbors too.

RATE?

What’s really important in a mortgage? Rate?

Do you know your mortgage rate? Of course you do. Now, here’s a tougher one. Do you know how much interest you’ll pay over the life of your mortgage? Tougher question, isn’t it? But that’s the more important one, and it’s usually overlooked by most borrowers. The truth is, even at today’s low rates, the total amount of interest on a 30-year fixed loan is roughly equal to the amount you borrowed. How would you like to potentially cut those interest costs in half, and be able to own your home free and clear in just years, rather than decades?

Well, now you can, with the Home Ownership Accelerator loan from CMG Mortgage. It’s actually very simple. Instead of depositing your paycheck in a traditional checking account, you deposit it into your Home Ownership Accelerator loan, which reduces your loan balance while your money is waiting to be spent. That could save you tens or thousands in interest, allowing you to pay off your home years earlier, with no change to spending habits. Call us for more info on this revolutionary new loan which could put you on the road to financial freedom sooner! ¢

WATCHING WITH WONDER As Winged Adventurers Soar

I

t’s a rare sight in most areas, but Rancho Penasquitos and nearby neighborhoods see it often: A hang glider or paraglider riding the wind near Black Mountain. What many local residents may not realize is that the venue from which these airborne enthusiasts launch has a name (Little Black), a “Pilot in Command” (Lori McBride), a “Straight Line” hang gliding record (36 miles, established in 1986 by Glen Volk), and a “Straight Line” paragliding record (28 miles, established in 2000 by Steve Rohrbaugh). And most residents likely don’t realize that Little Black is actually overseen by a significant professional organization, the San Diego Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association – which is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of foot-launched soaring. The Little Black site requires pilots to hike hang gliding or paragliding gear to the various

launches. Pilots are encouraged to get a site briefing from a local pilot prior to flying, and typically utilize Glider Point Trail starting at the kiosk or other trails established by the Park Service to ascend to the launch sites. Of significant note: The gliding group warns enthusiasts to park only in designated areas, do not utilize off-road vehicles, and to “not land on top of the water reservoir under any circumstances.” While it may appear the gliders are decending effortlessly along the thermals, it is clear much hard work, planning and coordination is necessary to ensure successful flights. In fact, SDHGPA members actually use 2-meter ham radios for communication during flights (which makes for both a successful and safe trip). Still the romance and beauty of silent flight is not lost on residents near Black Mountain on early summer evenings as they watch with wonder as the winged adventurers soar – and Premier Issue 2010

about the chef Kelly Booke is a single mother of two beautiful children. Her 17 year old son Austin will be a senior at Mt. Carmel this year and her 13 year old daughter Haleigh will be in 8th grade at Oak Valley. They reside in Rancho Penasquitos. “Broccoli Marge” is an old family recipe dating back about 35 years. It was from a dear family friend named Marge who passed away about 25 years ago. Since then, the family has called Marge’s recipe “Broccoli Marge.” The recipe is very easy to prepare and is a nice compliment to just about any meal. Kelly owns and operates two businesses from her home in PQ – she has been an independent contractor for a promotional products company called Geiger since 1991 and she also owns an embroidery company named “And Sew On...Custom Embroidery”. Between her two companies, Kelly insists that she can put your custom message or company logo on just about anything! :::: LOCAL FAMILY

For PQ’s Canales Clan, Soccer is a Family Affair

T

o call Kelly Canales a “soccer mom” is a very serious understatement. Kelly has spent years shuttling two daughters to soccer games and tournaments throughout San Diego County, California and the U.S. She also spent many years attending husband Rudy’s own soccer competitions. And, today, she even travels onboard a motor home adorned with a 40-foot flaming soccer ball – just so everyone knows her primary interest. If anything, Kelly is a “super soccer mom”! She’s also a department manager at Nordstrom (in Fashion Valley), a company she’s worked at for 17 years – but it’s clear soccer is her passion...and the family’s passion. It all began when Kelly and Rudy – a Sentry Insurance supervisor who is also involved with the PQ Premier Soccer Club – married 20 years ago and she spent years watching Rudy play the game. “He was a great soccer player,” she said. “Be-

fore we were even married we would travel all over to soccer tournaments and I would watch Rudy play. I loved it!” In fact, Rudy Canales has been a club soccer player for 32 years and has many years of youth and club coaching experience. The Canales moved to Rancho Penasquitos in 1999 from Salt Lake City when Rudy received a job promotion. “We had high school friends (in Orange County) who lived in PQ, so we were familiar with the area,” Kelly said. “We knew this was a very central area and knew it would be a great place to raise a ~ Kelly Canales family.” And PQ proved the perfect location for the couple’s two daughters to continue the family tradition of playing soccer. Miranda, 15, currently attends Westview High School and has played the past eight years with the PQ Premier Soccer

Club, typically competing with girls 1-2 years older. She also plays high school soccer (on junior varsity as a freshman, and making varsity as a sophomore) and is currently participating with a Surf Soccer League club. Miranda’s soccer success is further highlighted by the fact that she was diagnosed about a year ago with Type 1 Diabetes. “Miranda has showed extreme strength in dealing with this new

PQ proved to be the perfect location for the couple’s two daughters to continue the family tradition of playing soccer chapter in her life,” her mother said. “This is such a huge lifechanging disease that it really requires a lot of adjustments.” But Miranda is quite resilient, according to Kelly, and often gives speeches to classes at school about the disease – and spent time this summer volunteering at a diabetes camp for youths under age 12. Daughter Marley, 12, also has played soccer for eight years – one year of recreation league and the remaining years with the PQ Premier Soccer Club. Last year, Marley was scouted by CalSouth Soccer Club and invited to try out for their Young Olympian Soccer Program (and judged to be among the top 36 players in the region). Again this year, she was scouted by CalSouth and asked to try out for the team’s Olympic Development Program. She again was chosen in the top 36 participants, and was named among the top 18 players at a CalSouth regional tournament in Oregon in May – leading to participation in a top soccer camp at the University of Idaho. “We love soccer as a family,” Kelly said. “And we also enjoy eating dinner together on a nightly basis – even if it’s 8:30 p.m. after all the soccer games and practices are over.” And what about that motor home, which they’ve had for a few years? “We enjoy camping in our motor home at the beach,” Kelly noted. “We love to build a fire and make smores.” But despite all the fun the family had camping, according to Kelly, it just wasn’t quite complete. So at the beginning of this year, the Canales had the motor home re-painted, asking a graphic artist to paint a 40-inch soccer ball (with flames shooting out behind the ball) on each side of the vehicle. “It just seemed something was missing,” Kelly said. ¢ Know a family that should be profiled in 92129 Magazine? He recognized early on that I had the skill, both technical and interpersonal, to become a good dentist. Today, my mission is to help people have a lifetime of beautiful, healthy smiles.” “I accomplish this by offering the latest advances in cosmetic and restorative technology,” he added. “And I always remember what’s most important – treating patients with respect and kindness.” Dr. Davey’s practice offers general dentistry services to all ages, from “happy visits” for younger patients to treating senior patients. Services range from diagnostic and preventative services, to endodontics (root canals), orthodontics, periodontics (cleanings), oral surgery and prosthodontics (dental implants). He also is highly qualified and talented in the area of cosmetic dentistry, and truly enjoys working with patients to design new smiles that look good for years to come. A member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and the San Diego Dental Society, Dr. Davey participates in many professional study groups and new certification programs. YMCA

T

he Rancho Family YMCA serves more than 15,000 youths and families in the communities of Rancho Penasquitos, Sabre Springs, Scripps Ranch, Torrey Highlands, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Black Mountain Ranch, 4S Ranch, Del Sur, Santaluz, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, and Mira Mesa. Ten years ago, Rancho Family YMCA opened its main facility at 9410 Fairgrove lane in Rancho Penasquitos. To celebrate, the Y plans a “10th Birthday Celebration” on Aug. 28 with a Family Scavenger & Treasure Hunt from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, and a free Community Carnival Celebration from 12 noon to 3 p.m. (more information is available at www.rancho.ymca.org.). In advance of the 10-year anniversary, Executive Director Cindi Phallen answered questions from 92129 Magazine about the history of the local YMCA – and some of the plans for the future.

Question: How was the decision made to form the Rancho Family YMCA? What is the relationship with other YMCAs in San Diego County? Phallen: We are part of the YMCA of San Diego County – an association of 16 YMCAs; we are locally operated with decisions being made by Board of Management. In the late 1980s the community asked the YMCA if we would be interested in operating a pool – and after many collaborative meetings, it was agreed the city would contribute $2.1 million to build the aquatic part of a facility, and the YMCA would raise the remaining funds to build a full facility. The first two phases are now complete. Question: What is your background and how long have you been involved in the YMCA? Phallen: I have a college degree in education, and I have worked for the YMCA movement for over 25 years. Question: What is the staffing size at the Rancho Family YMCA facilities? Phallen: 16 full time employees, and 125 part-time employees Question: What are the most popular programs at the Rancho Family YMCA? Phallen: Gymnastics, swimming lessons, sports leagues, Adventure Guides, adult fitness classes and Wellness Center, and summer day camp Question: What are the age groups served by the Rancho Family YMCA? Phallen: We serve all age groups, from eight weeks old to seniors. The entire family is welcome at the Y. Question: What is the YMCA’s philosophy, in terms of meeting the needs of the community and its young people? Phallen: The YMCA is dedicated to improving the quality of life in our community, and to helping all people realize their fullest facebook.com/92129magazine

potential through the development of spirit, mind and body. We use our youth programs to incorporate the values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty. Question: How is the YMCA funded? Is there a specific significant fundraising even or activity? Phallen: About 90 percent of our revenue is generated through fee for service; about 8 percent is from fundraising (through the annual fundraising campaign and the annual golf tournament). Some also comes from grants. Question: What are the YMCA’s future plans in terms of expansion of facilities or services? Phallen: Phase III in PQ is to build a second floor on the existing facility and add a child care center. We are also planning to build a new YMCA facility on Scripps Poway Parkway.

Prepare Now for Best Fall Lawn, Garden Results

W

hile many San Diego area residents may not think of landscaping and gardening, late summer is actually the best time for a number of tasks to ensure beautiful flowers, bountiful cool-season vegetables, and healthy lawns. In many parts of the country, late summer and fall is a winding down period for lawns and gardens – but obviously not in Southern California. And three significant tasks should top the list in August and September: • Plant seeds for annual and biennial flowers and fall vegetables. Planting the seeds at this point takes advantage of the warm soil, ensuring they’re ready to transplant into the garden by October. • Prepare the garden and planting bed soil, which is the basis for every good garden. • Fertilize cool season grass lawns, since these are usually growing rapidly. And consider aerification (coring), which allows for better water and nutrition penetration.

the spot – choose from the following: beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, garlic, kale, lettuce, mustard greens, onions, parsley, peas, potatoes, radishes, rutabagas, shallots, spinach and turnips. Most must be planted from seeds (about midSeptember), but some are available as transplants at local nurseries. For many of these cool-season vegetables, the harvest period will begin in mid-November; some, like radishes and leaf lettuce will be earlier. Obviously, smaller Southern California yards may not be as accommodating for huge gardens –

but it only takes a small plot to make for plenty of fresh foods (so start small). Start soil preparation – for both new vegetable gardens and flower beds – by turning the soil and watering deeply, and continuing to water for two weeks. This will cause most of the weed seeds in the soil to germinate, making them easy to pull. For existing beds, loosen the soil and add several inches of organic material (home-made compost or bagged planting mix). Be sure to add gypsum to heavy clay soil, and both nitrogen (cottonseed meal or composted manure) and phosphorus (phosphate or bonemeal). ¢

When choosing what to put in the fall vegetable garden – no matter how small
