Call Me “Breaux”

D IRE C TO R O F B U SINE S S DE V E LO PME NT

A

little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 14 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey.

EXPERIENCE PLUS LOCAL KNOWLEDGE CONSIDERING SELLING YOUR HOME? I have been a Rancho Penasquitos resident for the past 17 years. In this same 17 years, I have been a Realtor specializing in listing homes in PQ and representing my clients to purchase homes here. I know our suburb like the back of my hand from the Poway school district that my 3 children attended, to the wonderful canyon trails that we have. Being fully engaged in the real estate market, once I have surveyed your home, I will provide direction on anything that may need to be done before your home goes on the market, including staging options and further ideas to improve and quickly sell the home.

STRONGER Than Ever VIOLET RENARD MAKES A COMEBACK AFTER A MAJOR INJURY by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Alan Smith Photography

hen Violet Renard heard the huge clash, she knew it was bad. It was the second half of the soccer game against Rancho Bernardo, and Violet had been playing strong, scoring one goal and assisting on another. The collision with the other team’s defender has become a defining moment in Violet’s life, one that has come to shape her belief about personal strength during challenging times. A senior at Westview High School, Violet began playing soccer at the age of four. The sport is her greatest motivator and stress reliever. “Soccer gives me a way out of all the stress and exhaustion I get from school, drama, or even myself; it gives me freedom to let go of all the negativity I might be enduring,” she explained. Being a soccer player influences her beyond practices and games. “Soccer gives me a chance to not only stay in shape, but it has helped me become the person I am today.” The collision that broke Violet’s fibula and fractured her tibia posed challenges on and off the field. Not only did she have a full leg cast and was confined to a wheelchair, she also had to call the prospective college coaches to tell them about the injury, “which was extremely terrifying,” Violet admitted. The hardest call was to her top choice – University of Northern Colorado. “I was relieved to hear they had confidence that I would make a full recovery in no time and the offer was still on the table,” she said. One month after the injury, she had surgery followed by three months of physical therapy. And today, she is back on the soccer field. “My first game I played in was probably the most emotional game of the 13 years that I’ve played soccer,” she acknowledged. “Being able to come back from such a horrible obstacle made me thankful to know I became a stronger person after all of it.” Violet stays positive with inspiration from her family. “They give me belief and motivation to be the best version of myself and to obtain what I would think would be impossible,” she explained. Today, that means representing the Division 1 soccer program at the University of Northern Colorado this fall. Timely enough, Violet shared, “At the beginning of every year I set a motto that I go by; this year’s motto is, ‘My whole heart for my whole life.’” 

A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // VINCE WALLACE I grew up in Rancho Penasquitos and found a passion for soccer while playing for “PQ Express”. I then went on to play at Palomar Junior College, San Diego State University, and a handful of men’s Premier teams. One of those teams included the San Diego Surf where I had the pleasure of being teammates with some of my current coaching associates at SD Force FC – Jose Ocampo, Paul Curry, and Kino Valdez. I am fortunate to coach for the SD Force FC because the club understands that winning does not create development, but development creates winners. Winning at all costs stunts the growth of children’s learning and puts unnecessary pressure that inhibits the ability to perform at a high level. Parents should surround their kids with positive coaches who prioritize the enjoyment of the game and how it should be played as opposed to the result. That is how you raise a happy and high performing athlete.

DENTISTRY PROFILE

Little Star Pediatric Dentistry W

hile their recently completed state-of-the-art office is new to the community of Carmel Valley, Little Star Pediatric Dentistry is by no means new to treating their young patients with a specialized, focused approach. The practice, which specializes in infants, toddlers, and children, originally had a small office in Solana Beach, exclusively treating patients struggling with lip and tongue restrictions. After transitioning to a new office in 92130, they are now empowered to provide comprehensive pediatric dental care. “My practice philosophy is to provide the same care for my patients that I would want my own children to receive,” said Dr. Najmeh Hannanvash. “To me, anything less than that is unacceptable. I believe in patient and parent education.” With a deep understanding that every child is unique, the practice tailors their treatments to the individual needs of their patients. Dr. Hannanvash and her team strive to stand out among other pediatric dental offices, not only by possessing knowledge, experience, and comfort in treating patients with all types of abilities and needs, but also providing guidance to help patients establish healthy habits for life. The skilled team maintains that being knowledgeable is a cornerstone for healthy development. After all, dental decay is entirely preventable with proper knowledge and care. “Our staff prides themselves on communicating our years of knowledge to parents and children,” Dr. Hannanvash explained. In addition to providing patients and parents with lifelong knowledge about how to maintain healthy oral hygiene habits, Little Star Pediatric Dentistry provides a wide range of comprehensive dental care. These include oral wellness examinations, cleanings, digital radiography, nutritional counseling, behavior management, the full spectrum of dental treatment, nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, treatment of lip and tongue ties (frenectomies), and other soft tissue laser treatments. 24 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2018

Dr. Hannanvash and Her Team Offer Specialized Services Unique to Pediatric Dentistry and the San Diego Community by SHYANNE LOPEZ | photos by Jessica Breaux

There is no greater match for the Little Star team when it comes to friendly, compassionate care for young patients and their families – except perhaps their own office building, which is equipped with the most up-to-date materials and advanced digital technology. With the help of their state-ofthe-art equipment, Little Star personnel are able to implement materials and techniques that are scientifically substantiated while maintaining the highest standards of practice set forth by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. While the office is known for these stand out high-tech features, it also is entirely kid-friendly, bright, vibrant, and full of toys and video games to help children feel more at ease during their visit. Each room even has a television screen – and the patient can choose their own movie to watch! Dr. Hannanvash affirmed, “We want to innovate the dental experience. We want each experience to be a positive and encouraging one, setting the tone for a lifetime of dental comfort and care.” 

Westview Student Honored with a Day

The 21st Annual Cover to Cover event will bring together a full house of guests from throughout the community to celebrate women authors on Saturday, May 5 at Maderas Golf Club. The luncheon is American Association of University Women (AAUW) Poway-Peñasquitos Branch’s signature annual event, and this year will include opportunity baskets, drawings, book signings, book sales, and the main event – presentations from authors Michelle Gable, Shilpi Somaya Gowda, and Susan Carol McCarthy. San Diego native Michelle Gable is the author of three books, as well as the upcoming book The Summer I Met Jack. Shilpi Somaya Gowda is the author of Secret Daughter and The Golden Son. Carlsbad resident Susan Carol McCarthy has published three novels, including A Place We Knew Well, and one work of nonfiction. The City Council of the City of San Diego recently issued a proclamation making Jan. 23, 2018 Sophia M. Righthouse Day in honor of Westview High School student Sophia Righthouse. The proclamation recognizes Sophia’s lifesaving efforts after noticing and reporting a structure fire, being the first on the scene, and conducting evacuations of residents, directly utilizing her skills in handling emergency situations, which she learned during a FEMA Cert Training course. “Sophia might be small in stature, but her impact as a freshman on Westview’s campus has been huge,” said Westview Principal Tina Ziegler. “She is a dedicated, hardworking student and cadet in the NJROTC program at Westview who wears her uniform proudly.” Sophia is also being recognized for her community service and many accomplishments within the Young Marines program, NJROTC, and Girl Scouts of America.

The Rancho Peñasquitos Branch Library will be one of 14 San Diego Public Library locations across the county hosting the 3rd Annual How-To Festival on Saturday, May 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival is an interactive community educational event in which participating libraries host free mini presentations and workshops. Attendees of all ages have the opportunity to learn things like how to dance the jitterbug, how to overcome stress with yoga and meditation, how to draw Pokémon characters, how to weave an afghan, how to roll basic sushi, how to wear a scarf six different ways, and much more. Festival presenters are community experts from all walks of life, offering something for everyone. Other participating locations include the Mira Mesa Library, Clairemont Branch Library, Mission Hills Branch Library, Pacific Beach Branch Library, Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa Branch Library, and the Central Library, among others. 92129 resident Nina Shantel recently released her second book, Slimming Dairy-Free Desserts & Smoothies. The dessert cookbook features dairy-free, gluten-free, and many vegan recipes. Treats in the book include things like fudge, pudding, chocolate candy, cookies, muffins, and smoothies, and are made with healthier ingredients such as quinoa, chia seeds, and sweet potatoes. Many of Nina’s recipes were born from her own unique health challenges. “I had a bunch of my recipes in a folder so I decided to make a cookbook with just desserts for people who have allergies or food restrictions,” she said. “My goal is to let people know that desserts can be healthy and delicious without sugar, flour, butter, and dairy.” Nina is a health blogger and also the author of The High-Five Diet. Sundance Intelligence Agency

2018 Woman of the Year

A group of girls from Sundance Elementary School, self-titled the Sundance Intelligence Agency, empowers girls through homework and studying. The all-girl group, which began three years ago so the students could do homework after school together, now meets weekly and often holds lemonade stand fundraisers at a local park to buy school supplies and other equipment to test their math and science concepts. As each girl finishes her own homework, they help those who might still be struggling to finish. Girls in the group are top academic performers in the Poway Unified School District – some have even gone on to earn local, state, and federal recognition for their work. The group will also be attending a special recognition luncheon at the University of California San Diego later this year. Living by their motto to “never leave a girl behind,” Sundance Intelligence Agency is building confidence and shaping young leaders right here in 92129.

Scripps Ranch resident Cheryl Shaw was recently named the 77th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year for her volunteer work supporting disaster relief and public safety. “Cheryl Shaw is a committed volunteer and resolute leader,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “Her wholehearted support for victims of the 2003 Cedar Fire and 2007 Witch Creek Fire contributed so much to the community.” Cheryl has been chair of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association Neighborhood Watch since 2010. Since then, the group has grown to the largest neighborhood watch group in the county. She organizes an annual Night Out every August to strengthen ties between neighbors and law enforcement, fire safety, and local government offices. She and her husband, Mike, have two children and five grandchildren who are all local. The Woman of the Year program began in 1987 as a State of California effort to celebrate extraordinary women and commemorate Women’s History Month.

PRODIGY DANCE COMPANY’S SUMMER CAMPS LEAVE DANCERS WANTING MORE by LINDA FRABL photos by Alan Smith Photography and provided by Prodigy Dance Company

AT-A-GLANCE Name of Business: Prodigy Dance Company Owner: Melissa Sanchez Years in Position: 4 Year of Establishment: 2012 Address: 13550 Camino Del Sur, Suite 3B San Diego, CA 92129 Website: www.ProdigyDance.com Email: info@prodigydance.com Phone: 858-484-8032 Description of Business: A dance studio that provides a nurturing environment with fun and challenging programs that help our students grow not only as dancers but as people.

rodigy Dance Company, located in Rancho Peñasquitos, is renowned not only for its exceptional staff of professional dancers but also for its impressive classes that teach the proper techniques of all dance styles. In the summer, however, the focus of Prodigy becomes a little more lighthearted and entertaining for its campers. This is not to say that Prodigy’s summer camps slack off with regards to learning. Owner Melissa Sanchez emphasized, “The reason we succeed as a studio is because we manage to actually teach dance while the dancers are having fun. We want our dancers to challenge themselves while making new friends. We give campers more opportunities to create dances on their own versus just having a teacher choreograph a routine for an end of the year recital. It is important to create a positive and nurturing environment, so all of our dancers leave the camp with smiles on their faces, while wanting more!” A variety of dance styles are offered to campers from 3 to 18 years of age, such as ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics, and hip-hop. Every camp consists of stretching, dance instruction, and a daily art craft. The younger dancers can take such popular themed camps such as “Frozen” or “Moana” that occasionally feature visits from princesses! The older dancers can participate in the very popular “So You Think You Can Dance” camp, and the more serious dancers can sign up for intensive camps in which outside professional teachers and choreographers create an extra special experience. Prodigy offers camps for all scheduling needs. There are half-day camps from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., full-day camps from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and lunch/late pickup options. The camps run Monday through Thursday, and on the last day of camp, the dancers perform for the parents. Melissa added, “It is a great way to wrap up the camp and have the kids showcase all of their hard work!” Giving a shout-out to the incredible dance instructors who make the Prodigy summer camps so spectacular, Melissa exclaimed, “We truly enjoy our jobs as teachers and educators, which transfers to the students. Energy is contagious, and we are so happy to share our love of dance with the community.”  April | May 2018 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • 35

Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, traditional camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. ROBOT CITY

REISERT TENNIS CAMP

I

f your child loves to build robots, Robot City is the place to be this summer! Students learn hands-on with multiple robots, including some to keep for further experimentation at home. Robot City’s exciting curriculum is focused on bolstering students’ foundation for future success in growing STEM fields. Aspiring roboticists will learn fundamentals of robotics and related technology such as circuitry, sensors, gears, the science of electricity, physics concepts, and tactile skills such as connecting wires. Unlike courses with heavy screen time, Robot City’s programming and coding camps allow students to build and program real robots in the field. This allows infinite possibilities for your child to bring together STEM concepts in a way only they can dream and design. There are six robot building and robot coding camp options for grades K-2 and 2-6. Students can build dozens of different robots (some to keep!) including MagnetBot, RoboSpider, Gyrobot and Ozobot, as well as advanced robotic drones and the Arduino-based mBot and Edison. Tuition is $255 until April 22 with code ZCODE18 (regularly $270). Visit www.RobotCityWest.com for camp dates and locations including 4S Ranch, Carmel Valley, Del Sur, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch, Poway, and more. 

Together with his all-star instructors made up of fellow U.S.P.T.A. professionals and former collegiate standouts, they have created one of the most popular tennis programs in North County. Their student-to-staff ratio is a maximum of 6:1, ages 5 and up. Children are grouped by age/current skill level and three different types of tennis balls are implemented to maximize learning. Each day of tennis camp features a stroke of the day, drills, games, and match play to support the learning of that particular skill. Daily snack, weekly prizes, and camp dry fit t-shirts are provided. Summer camps are Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Year-round tennis programs are also offered. Homebuying with No Down Payment

by JEAN RILEY

JEAN RILEY

D

id you know it is possible to buy a home with zero money down? Earlier this year, California Home Finance Agency increased the income limit to qualify for the Down Payment Assistance Program to $157,050 per household. This means that if your family collectively earns less than $157,050, then you may qualify to buy a home with zero down payment! The program allows you to buy a home up to $660,000 with zero down payment. If you are paying more than $2,000 per month in rent, it may be time to consider buying a home instead of renting. The tax benefits alone will surprise you and make you wish you had found out

Professional Real Estate Consultant

about this opportunity sooner rather than later. Many PQ residents find themselves in a rising rent market, and it is time to consider buying instead of paying your landlord’s mortgage. Interest rates are still near historic lows and there are no signs of a housing correction. Until supply outpaces demand, I don’t see any reason to be concerned about a housing correction. There are many other data points to suggest this as well – refer a few months back to our article on this topic. If you are interested in buying with little to nothing down, or just buying in general, please reach out to us for a complimentary consultation. 
