ith all of the recent rain and cold weather, I can’t believe we are finally thinking about summer! I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a bit overwhelming. Several months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, we have been publishing our popular Annual Summer Camp Guide for the past five years. Although we had no idea of how popular these issues were going to become, this year I am proud to present you with the largest Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 34) that we’ve published. It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in 92129 Magazine!

LOCAL NONPROFIT GIVES A NEW LEASH ON LIFE TO THOSE IN NEED

T

ender Loving Canines Assistance Dogs (TLCAD) has spent 20 years changing lives. The Rancho Bernardo-based nonprofit organization trains and provides service dogs throughout San Diego County and Ione, CA. Three programs form the heart of TLCAD’s mission. At Ease service dogs help service members and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, or mobility limitations. Leash-On-Life service dogs help individuals with autism. “We also place service dogs as facility dogs and courthouse facility dogs that work with populations in need,” explained Development Director Fara Khaleeli. The third program, Prisoners Overcoming Obstacles & Creating Hope (POOCH), is run through correctional facilities in San Diego and Ione, CA. With support from TLCAD volunteers, inmates care for and train future service dogs. “Our mission is to transform lives with service dogs, and each dog starts transforming lives as soon as they enter the training program and continue for the rest of their doggie life,” Fara said. “We are also able to rehabilitate incarcerated populations by training incarcerated individuals to utilize positive reinforcement to train service dogs for those in need.” TLCAD is open to volunteers and supporters. “We have some volunteers that enter the correctional facilities to assist with training classes,” Fara said. “There is also a need for volunteers that help with office tasks and for event support.” The organization also hosts regular fundraising events, like recent events at Protector Brewery in Miramar and Culture Brewery in Solana Beach. Learn more about new events, how to volunteer, and how to apply for a service dog at www.tenderlovingcanines.org. 

Aaron D’Souza Codes to Help Ease Others’ Lives (and to Play Games He’s Created)

Coding Ninja by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by PortrArt Creations

Name: School: Grade: Parents: Favorite Spots:

Aaron Vijay D’Souza (8) Park Village Elementary School 3 Sandeep and Lydia D’Souza Prado Rancho Peñasquitos and Plaza

A

aron started microprogramming when he visited the Thinka-Bit-Lab at his father’s Qualcomm workplace. The program encourages children to make interesting projects using creativity and technology. The Park Village Elementary third grader has since learned Scratch, Python, and Arduino (using the C language). His programs use Boolean expressions, conditional logic, loops, variables, strings, and numerical operation. Aaron has connected his Arduino microcontroller to electronic components like LED’s, motors, displays, lights, sounds, and RFID (Radio Frequency ID) sensors. Huh? To break it down more clearly, Aaron explained, “In Python I have programmed Frogger, Pong, TicTac-Toe, Fruit Ninja, Flappy Bird, and a dice-rolling guessing game. I also wrote Python programs that draw pictures and shapes such as squares, rectangles, octagons, hexagons, pentagons, and triangles.” He was recognized for these abilities by Ms. Renata’s Coder School, and he’d like to make our lives easier. “For example, GPS (Geographical Positioning System) helps us drive to places which we are not familiar with,” Aaron

said. “What I enjoy most with coding is when I see my program run properly and I can play the game that I coded.” Science and history are Aaron’s favorite school subjects because of exciting experiments and projects for the former, and learning how the world evolved from early civilizations to the present time for the latter. “I like reading about American founding fathers George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams.” To combine his favorites, he also reads about history and science together: stories about Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and Albert Einstein, to name a few. Outside of school, Aaron is a first-degree taekwondo black belt who won first place in the California State open competition. He calls Park Village Cub Scouts Pack 675 his own, takes piano lessons and art classes, and is performing in musical theater – Peter Pan is scheduled for May. “I am very excited because some of my friends joined me!” When Aaron wants to volunteer, he recycles trash, sells popcorn for the Cub Scouts, and puts together supply bags for people on the streets who need them. In the near future, he’d like to continue doing more Arduino projects using C language – next will be a robotic arm that sorts M&Ms by color. “When I grow up,” Aaron said, “I would like to become a technology journalist so I can learn about different technologies before they are released in the market.” 

TALENT IN TRAINING Studio West Offers Music Production Camps for Young Musicians

S

tudio West has been San Diego’s premier recording studio for over 40 years, but recently some new clients have been working there. In 2015, owner Peter Dyson started a series of week-long music production camps for middle and high school students, largely due to his own children’s musical journey. “My daughter plays the harp and my son is a drummer. They both had amazing teachers and great experiences performing with various ensembles, but a recording studio is a different environment that helps musicians grow.” The week-long camps involve instruction in songwriting, production and performance. Many students have a background in music theory and traditional instruments, but it’s not a requirement. “A laptop is now a musical instrument, just like a piano or guitar, but to play it requires the same instruction, discipline, and hard work that’s required for more traditional instruments,” said Dyson.

Performing in a studio is intimidating, but students rise to the occasion. As the lead instructor, San Diego songwriter, performer, and father of two multi-instrumentalist preteen boys Shawn Rohlf explains it, “I’m amazed at the musicianship and work ethic of the kids. If they are this good now, where will they be in 10 years?” At the end of the week, parents and students listen to the songs that students have written and produced over the week. The experience leaves many ready for more. As student Chrysta Hlavacek (17) puts it, “Making music with talented artists is my dream job, and going to Studio West helps me get there.” 

The event, held by the San Diego Police Foundation, was first established in 2010 to celebrate female leadership in law enforcement. This year’s theme was Courage Knows No Gender. “It greatly benefits our community when women pursue a career in law enforcement, and I hope this trend will continue in San Diego,” said San Diego Chief of Police David Nisleit.“Congratulations to Detective Righthouse for her unwavering leadership, dedication, and service in protecting our communities, and to Ms. Mendez for her leadership and commitment to all of the employees of the San Diego Police Department.” Detective Righthouse has served in the San Diego Police Department for 29 years, and on the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force for 13 years. She has investigated more than 400 child abuse-related cases and is the recipient of the Exceptional Performance Citation and Commanding Officer’s Citation.

Individual schools have also won recent awards, with Meadowbrook Middle School and Mt. Carmel High School honored as 2019 California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education. Learningand Attention

Challenges REAL AND PERMANENT SOLUTIONS

“T

here is a reason your bright child struggles in school, and it’s not your fault. It’s not you, your child’s school, or that your child is lazy,” said Maria Bagby, Founder and Executive Director of the Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC). “Weak or inefficient processing skills will cause bright students to struggle, have difficulty paying attention, or appear unmotivated.” Yet these underlying skills are not taught in school or traditional tutoring. The schools’ job is to provide academic curriculum and accommodations for children to access that curriculum. Schools do not have the resources or training to provide the level of therapies needed to strengthen the underlying processing and learning skills required for efficient learning. By strengthening the underdeveloped skills through specialized therapies, learning comes naturally and therefore students become confident, motivated, and independent learners. Over the last five years, TLC has helped hundreds of children get back on track, become independent in their learning, and be motivated and confident in themselves in a positive, supportive, and fun environment. TLC uses a one-onone approach because it works. It is highly effective, and in the long term, will save worry, frustration, self-esteem, and time. “We are celebrating five years in California with many changes and upgrades. Like our students, we continue to grow 32 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2019

alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 18 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as

a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions. “People come to California All-Stars for top-quality coaching and family atmosphere,”

explained Tannaz. “Life lessons, core values, and athletic excellence come hand-inhand. We love to see our kids succeed on and off the floor!” CAS’s list of awards and recognitions includes 400 National Titles, Grand Champions, Program Champions, Innovative Choreography Awards, Judges Choice Awards, Paid Bids to the USASF Cheerleading Worlds, 2009 through 2013 World Champions, IALC Champions, 2010 through 2014 NCA National Champions, three silver medals at the 2008 Cheerleading Worlds, and 2013 Summit Champions. Marilee Chaney of North County said, “CAS is about positive attitudes. From the ‘can do’ approach toward all athletes to seeing the staff enthusiastically hug a cheerleader when she gets a new tumbling skill – from the beginning, the message has been ‘you are capable, and you are welcome here.’” With a trained and energetic staff, spacious gym, and professional instruction, CAS has something for every budding cheerleader out there! OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS

N

ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: “old-fashioned” camp activities (think MUD!), door-to-door transportation for most families, and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly, a clinical psychologist, bring years of child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 14 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford, a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // COACH CHRIS As far back as I can remember, sports have always been a part of who I am – from baseball and basketball to football and surfing. But there was just something extra special about soccer that lit a fire inside me that still burns today. I have four daughters, and the day I became a dad I knew I would teach them about sports in hopes that they, too, would find that same passion. They did; each one played soccer, so coaching became a natural progression for me. I started coaching in 2014 and eventually found Force FC. I like their possession-based style and the family environment they foster, which is how I feel about my teams. I treat each one as an extension of my family. I want each individual player to know that I care, and although mistakes happen in training or games, I tell them it's not whether they make a mistake or not, it's how they react that makes them a great teammate and person. While motivation is key, once they believe in themselves and put in the work, they’ll realize success will follow. Take care of the little things and big things will happen. When I’m not on the soccer field, I’m reading, watching a game, golfing, snowboarding, and spending time with my wife and kids.

Painting PROFESSIONALS

Colossus Painting Provides Its Customers With a Better Product for an Affordable Price

rior to starting Colossus Painting, Joshua Berner sold paint to contractors, using his expertise to teach them how to resolve issues and specify which types of paint would work best for a given project. It wasn’t long before Joshua decided to use his knowledge of the painting industry to start his own painting company and, in 2008, Colossus Painting was born. “I wanted to create a company that could serve customers much better and provide a better product for an affordable price,” Joshua explained. Today, Colossus Painting has made Joshua’s dream a reality by providing interior and exterior painting of homes and businesses, while also offering repair of stucco, drywall, and wood. “Colossus is unique in its approach to a project,” stated Joshua. “We tailor your job to the best system or options of systems for your home. This differs from a lot of other companies in the area.” Color retention is a big issue with exterior paint jobs here in San Diego as well as washability and durability they contend with on interior jobs. Colossus has solutions for this. “Our feeling is when your job is complete, it should stand out in appearance and longevity compared to those painted by someone else,” Joshua added. It’s important to note that a little paint can go a long way in changing the appearance of a home. “People forget about paint,” said Joshua. “It is a great way to make your home look great in a relatively short amount of time. We paint and stain a lot of cabinets, front doors, and garage doors.” From the beginning, the team at Colossus Painting has made an effort to give back. “We have helped a lot of schools and people,” explained Joshua. “We’ve painted homes for free. It’s a joy for us and our workers as much as it is for the homeowner who is having a difficult life situation.” Joshua is proud of his family-oriented, friendly, and professional staff. “I believe that when someone hires us, they realize they are dealing with a knowledgeable and professional company and will receive a great paint job,” shared Joshua. “We help the customer through the process and can get them the right tools to make their job successful.”  58 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2019
