FROM THE PUBLISHER VO L . 1 0, N O. 4 TM
Please Support Local Businesses
I
’ve published community magazines for 11 years. And my father has been in the publishing industry his entire life. As a junior in high school, I remember the night that the United States started bombing military targets in Iraq and Kuwait. I went with my dad after midnight down to the local newspaper where he worked. I literally watched him order the press to be stopped, scrap the originally planned cover story, and print a new cover page telling its readers that America Is At War! It was one of the first times that I began to realize how the media worked and the impact that it has in our society. I was proud to get a glimpse behind the curtain. While we didn’t have a “stop the press” moment here at ZCode once our state and local communities began being ordered to shut down all nonessential businesses and shelter-in-place, it has certainly turned our small business community upside down. As a business owner, one must prepare for slow times and potential economic downturns – it comes with the responsibilities of entrepreneurship. However, a small business being prepared for all of its customers to vanish and immediately shut their business down is asking the impossible. How does one prepare for that? It’s never happened before. Although I understand that the shelter-in-place ordinance is necessary for the safety of everyone, my heart goes out to all of our advertising participants (that financially make this magazine possible) and other local community business owners. Most of them have shut down their business and made the difficult decision to furlough their employees – they didn’t have a choice. At this time, uncertainty as to when they will be allowed to open back up is the primary concern. Another concern is that when businesses are finally allowed to operate again, will the customers return fast enough to make it financially feasible to do so? One thing is for certain. We are all in this together. It’s going to take dedication and a willingness from the community to help small businesses get back on their feet. Businesses will need their customers back. It will take revenue for these businesses to be able to bring their employees back. WE CAN ALL HELP! If you are able to assist, I ask that you consider making a donation to local businesses that affect your life. Twenty dollars, 50 dollars, 100 dollars or more – it all adds up. Maybe it’s a local restaurant... Perhaps a local dentist or orthodontist... Consider your hair stylist, your child’s gym or dance studio, or even this magazine. Let the local businesses in your life know that you are there for them, appreciate them, and are willing to assist. We don’t know how the world will be after this crisis is over. But coming together as a community and supporting each other gives every business the best chance to land on their feet and continue providing the services and products that make our town so special. Stay healthy 92129 XXXXXreaders! readers!

irl Scout Brownie Troop 3862, led by Tara Tomaini, is continuing to meet, learn, and achieve while adapting to social distancing guidelines. The troop used to meet every Friday at Sunset Hills Elementary School, but now holds weekly virtual meetings instead. Their first virtual meeting focused on the topic of making the best of a difficult situation, setting the tone for upcoming meetings with a collaborative remote art project. The scouts also recently attended a virtual Pets and Bugs badge workshop with Zovargo, a Girl Scouts San Diego community partner that offers animal-centric badge workshops. They’re each working on other

badges at their own pace, including the Household Elf badge, which focuses on making your own household cleaning supplies and how to recycle. Some plans have been postponed – the troop participated in this year’s cookie sales program, and originally planned to use those funds for camping or horseback riding adventures. The scouts also enjoy community service, and they plan to volunteer for Feeding San Diego when social distancing guidelines ease. But for now, the girls will continue to make the most of their current circumstances. hese three sophomores at Del Norte High School, twins Lola and Sophie Bulkin and their friend Ellie Zeiler, created their own Instagram account last year, called the Together As One (TGAO) movement, after all three experienced prejudiced behavior from their fellow students. The site expanded into a school club and nonprofit organization, and Lola, Sophie, and Ellie have even been on a Channel 8 televised community meeting panel in which they promoted their TGAO mission. Lola said, “We thought that creating a positive and inclusive platform to spread awareness to the community would be an effective way to combat any growing hate.” Ellie shared, “By starting TGAO, we created an outlet for teens to hear other people’s stories, no matter their culture, lifestyle, or religion.” The TGAO club meets at school twice a month, and the students are encouraged to share their ideas and experiences in a supportive environment. The attendees also do such activities as make appreciation cards and create and hang posters throughout the campus. About a month after initially forming TGAO, the Chabad of Poway shooting incident took place, which affected the girls deeply as each had
ties to the temple – all three had attended its preschool. Through their TGAO platform, the girls made and sold t-shirts to raise funds for the Chabad of Poway victims. Sophie elaborated, “The t-shirts represented a message of unity, kindness, and acceptance. The support of our community showed how impactful one person’s actions could be, and how we must all stand together and embrace each other’s differences.” The girls are now working toward bringing their club and its values to other San Diego area schools, starting with Poway High School. Lola revealed, “Ultimately, we hope to spread our club to every Poway Unified School District high school and continue to grow as a movement.” Ellie said, “We’d also love to work with elementary and middle schools so we can reach kids before they get to high school, which seems to be when a lot more prejudice comes out.” Another TGAO endeavor the girls are undertaking is improving the Instagram platform by adding more videos featuring other students. Sophie exclaimed, “We are trying to express the cultural differences in our community by interviewing kids from both our school and other schools.” Ellie added, “It takes a lot of courage to tell your story and put yourself out there but once you do, you realize so many other people can relate.” When they’re not involved with TGAO, each girl keeps busy with various pursuits. Ellie volunteers by teaching golf at the Special Olympics, Lola plays soccer for her high school and for Force FC, and Sophie also plays soccer for her high school and takes rowing classes. All three plan to attend college and to continue dedicating their time to the TGAO movement for many years to come. Follow Together As One on Instagram @tgaomovement. ¢

H
arbaugh Seaside Trails, the three-acre coastal overlook linking Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Solana Beach, is now officially open to the public and accessible for hiking, wildlife photography, dog walking, and peaceful contemplation in nature, following a special grand opening celebration in February. The trails feature a wave-shaped walking trail, spectacular ocean views from the shell-shaped observation deck, over 8,000 native plants that represent four Southern California coastal habitats, and the donor monument designed by artist Betsy Schulz with lagoon wildlife-themed mosaics, uniting the Coastal Rail Trail art theme. Once slated for development for many years, the land was secured by Nature Collective, made possible by a $1.15 million gift from The Harbaugh Foundation, and is now designated permanent open space, open daily from sunrise to sunset. “We saved these views together!”

said Doug Gibson, Nature Collective Executive Director. “Today we celebrate – and generations will cherish what we refused to lose for our collective love of nature and community.” Harbaugh Seaside Trails is named in honor of the late George and Betty Harbaugh, San Diego philanthropists who directed their estate planning to benefit nature and community. “It has been an honor and privilege to work with Nature Collective and our community to preserve this amazing property and to make it accessible now and for future generations,” said Harbaugh Foundation Director Joe Balla. DENTIST PROFILE
In Response to COVID-19 DR. KAMI HOSS AND THE SUPER DENTISTS TRANSFORM THE AT-HOME DENTAL EXPERIENCE by SAMANTHA EDWARDS | photo provided by The Super Dentists
T
he COVID-19 outbreak has undoubtedly caused challenges for everyone, including the dental industry. The Super Dentists, the largest pediatric dentistry practice in San Diego, initially responded to the crisis by communicating with patients and increasing the healthcare protocols that were already in place. However, following strong recommendations by the California Dental Association and the shelter in place order from Governor Gavin Newsom, The Super Dentists made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend non-urgent treatment. They are now only seeing emergency patients at their most centrally located office in Kearny Mesa. “We know daily routines have been upended by COVID-19, but children’s oral health care routines shouldn’t be one of them,” said The Super Dentists Co-Founder Dr. Kami Hoss. “Ensuring children brush two times each day for two minutes at a time and floss at least once a day can keep dental issues at bay until normal dental visits resume.” The Super Dentists team created a virtual version of their Super Lounges, designed to replicate
the in-office experience online by providing entertaining and educational content like movies, toothbrushing songs, video story time, and activities for kids. You may not be able to go visit them, but your favorite Super Dentists characters can come visit you through their augmented reality technology. The Super Dentists encourage patients to utilize the augmented reality toothbrush and the free VIVARRA Dental app to help maintain their oral healthcare routine. “Reinventing and transforming the dental experience is something we’ve been doing for 24 years, and COVID-19 hasn’t changed that,” said Dr. Kami Hoss. “We’ve just flipped the script and are reinventing and transforming the at-home dental experience until we can see our patients again.” While The Super Dentists await direction on a re-opening date, they are donating toothbrushes to local nonprofits and continue to communicate with patients regularly. “COVID-19 may have created unforeseen challenges for our practice, patients, employees, and doctors, but we are innovating and will return stronger and better. We are grateful to our loyal patients and look forward to welcoming them back into our offices soon,” Dr. Kami Hoss said.

Jay Wang, from Mark Keppel High School, won first place. Shiraz Rezaei attends Polytechnic High School, and Skandhaa Subramaniam attends Mt. Carmel High School. The event’s judges were Darshana Patel, president of the Poway Unified School District Board of Education; Barbara Bush, Ph.D., lecturer in the University of California San Diego Department of Communication; and Phil Barham, GATE/Seminar teacher at Ericsson Elementary School. 4th Annual Little Black Dress Initiative In early March, Junior League of San Diego’s 4th Annual Little Black Dress Initiative raised $5,795 and 10 bags of clothing to support foster youth. The donations are focused on youths transitioning out of the foster care system, helping them access resources to find jobs or further their education. The Little Black Dress Initiative is a social media-driven fundraising campaign. Junior League volunteers wore the same black dress from March 9 through 13 and shared the campaign on their social media channels, raising awareness about the local impact of poverty. Junior League of San Diego has raised more than $21,000 for local foster youth since 2017. “This is our fourth year of starting the conversation around this difficult topic, and I’m so proud of not only the statistical achievements of our efforts, but how far and wide the message has spread,” said Emily Green Lake, president of Junior League of San Diego. “With any initiative, the goal is to create a conversation around important issues and our team of volunteers has done a great job of bringing awareness to the poverty challenges in our community.” Learn more at www.jlsd.org.

CodeREV Kids
W
ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 16 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford and a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education and preparing students for their future by getting them excited about using math, logic, and science. C
alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 19 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self-confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions. “People come to California All-Stars for top-quality coaching and family atmosphere,” explained Tannaz. “Life lessons, core values, and athletic excellence come hand-in-hand. We love to see our kids succeed on and off the floor!” With a trained and energetic staff, spacious gym, and professional instruction, CAS has something for every budding cheerleader out there! Tryouts for new teams will be held May 13, 14, and 16, and students should preferably be there all three days. The tryout process determines team placement. Everyone is placed on a team; there are no cuts. CAS also has “prep” teams for families that are looking to enroll without the travel requirement. Outpost Summer Camps Edited April 8, 2020: “We are disappointed to announce that Outpost Summer Camps is not able to operate this summer due to COVID-19. Please visit our website for details. We hope you and your families are well and that you will join us in summer 2021!” – Dr. Kelly Jones, Executive Director
O
utpost Summer Camps provides valuable opportunities for children to connect with each other face to face and away from screens. Founded in 2001, the camp serves over 1,500 children every summer completely outdoors and unplugged. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for 18 summers: nature, fun, and exceptional staff! Nature is the vehicle through which children get to play collaboratively and creatively. Fun is experienced on a surface level through exciting games and on a deeper level through a sense of belonging and community. Exceptional staff lead small, consistent groups with a focus on friendships, special traditions, and an inclusive culture. Outpost serves children ages 3 to 14, and according to Dr. Kelly Jones, the camp’s owner and director: “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities, and all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous adventures facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions and small, consistent groups are what make Outpost so impactful. Dr. Kelly explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” The camps also stand out with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp.
