Memories That Last a Lifetime

ost people hold the memories of a few precious life experiences close to their heart. These are the memories that you are excited to tell your close friends and family about. They can be trips that you’ve taken, academic accomplishments, or even sporting events. Regardless of the specifics, these events are often remembered as if they were yesterday. I certainly have a handful of special memories that I am always eager to talk about. My youngest daughter recently experienced something that very few 12-year-old kids get to experience. She and her fellow softball teammates from the 4S Ranch 12U All-Stars went on a 13-game winning streak and became the California State Champions in their division. I still get choked up mentioning that title. It was an amazing thing to watch. Looking back, I realized that I was the exact same age when my Little League team went to the Texas state tournament. Although we didn’t become state champs, 32 years later I still have very fond memories of my experience at the tournament and the journey getting there. In fact, I’ve told the story countless times – just ask my sweet wife who has had to listen to it more times than I care to admit. And that brings me to my point. As these girls made the last out to win the state championship game on that hot and sunny day in Lancaster, the pure joy and emotions that followed were amazing to watch and absorb. There were tears of joy, lots of hugs, and plenty of celebrating that took place on the field. It was at that very moment that the magnitude of my daughter’s life experience became a reality. It was quite an emotional feeling for my wife and me when we realized that our daughter had just experienced a lasting life moment that she will carry with her and talk about for decades to come. I wish there was a way that we could select which life experiences we hold onto and carry with us for the rest of our lives. It would make things so much simpler. However, one thing that I have realized is that these life experiences tend to pick us – and not the other way around. Some people refer to them as a gift, and I definitely agree with that analogy. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to my sweet daughter and her talented teammates. I am very proud to be a part of your journey and life experiences. Your hard work, enthusiasm, and zest for life are a true blessing. Keep doing what you do!

Survivor STRONG PQ STUDENT STAR SARAH LOZA GIVES BACK TO OTHERS FIGHTING CANCER by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Alan Smith Photography
I
n the fall of 2017, nine-year-old Sarah Loza started to experience unexplained electrical shocks to the forehead, severe body pain, and night sweats. Diagnosed with Stage 4 Burkitt’s Lymphoma, she had to find her bravery and maturity, and grow up very quickly. “I was relieved when the diagnosis was found,” Sarah explained, “and nervous to begin treatment.” Sarah’s family has lived in PQ for 18 years, and while they enjoy everything about the area – from proximity to the canyon and beach to great schools – they really love their community for all the ways they showed support for Sarah during her treatments. “Our neighbor Maureen Nevarez created a meal train, and my school Deer Canyon Elementary and the PQ community dropped off delicious meals, along with monetary donations and loving cards and letters,” she said. “My soccer coach John Antione put together an amazing fundraiser with the San Diego Soccer Club and Fresco Pizzeria to raise funds for medical bills.” The list of helpers grew: Support Young Athletes raised money for physical therapy to get Sarah back to playing soccer. Her piano teacher, Megan Glee, came every week to continue lessons or just to keep her encouraged if she was too weak to play. Her fourth grade teacher, Rosemary Richards, gave Sarah home lessons. “Her loving dedication and grandmotherly approach motivated and encouraged me,” Sarah affirmed. “I miss her daily visits.” Mrs. Rosemary also put together a fundraiser with Dream Dinners to help with medical bills. Fortunately, Sarah overcame her battle with cancer and is now in remission. “I am grateful to be alive today,” she said. “I thank God and my oncology team at Rady Children’s Hospital for healing my body.” Sarah and her mother are now giving back to her friends still battling cancer at Rady by creating two programs – a connection technique using walkie-talkies called Chatting With Champs, and Get to Know You Jenga, where questions pasted on each Jenga piece are used to initiate engagement and conversation. “Our hope is to help kids who are going through chemo treatments by connecting them with other champs and lift their spirits during a time when they feel isolated, trapped, and alone.” Sarah is now focused on regaining her strength and returning to normal life. Soccer, swimming, dancing, singing, piano, slime making, and reading top her list of interests. “I have two sisters and a dog, and I want to get stronger to keep up with them and enjoy my life.” Sarah’s “Nana,” Patricia Arce, was always her inspiration. “She showed me what courage and bravery was when she was going through treatments for Stage 4 leiomyosarcoma.” Unfortunately, Sarah’s Nana lost her battle just eight months before Sarah’s diagnosis, but the love and lessons have remained strong. “I have learned that we should live each day as if it’s our last day, be happy, and give back.” Sarah and her family are hosting lemonade stands for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Stop by 8900 Twin Trails Dr. on Sept. 8 and 15 from 3 to 5 p.m.

he summer is flying by now that the San Diego County Fair is over. Many of us are enjoying the Saturday morning farmers market, the free classes at the San Diego Public Library, and the many local community parks. The vacations will come to an end with the first day of school for Poway Unified School District on Aug. 22. We have some news about recent budgetary changes impacting events and maintenance programs at the PQ Parks & Recreation Centers. The San Diego Parks & Recreation Department has made big budgetary changes in the use and distribution of collected local fees. Since 1997, PQ has offered community events using some of those collected fees such as the local fireworks in July, the Western BBQ in August, Oktoberfest in October, Winter Wonderland in December, and the annual egg hunts. Effective July 2018, most of these programs will be retired due to city wide budgetary shortfalls. The good news is the RP Town Council has elected to sponsor the upcoming Beer Garden at Oktoberfest and the fireworks program next July. We are dedicated to bringing community grants, sponsorships, and events to our community through community support and participation. Yes, some of these events will continue in the same locations, but it will be up to all of us to bring them to life through our support of the RP Town Council. N
ew San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Chief David Nisleit recently attended a meet and greet at the Carmel Mountain Ranch/Sabre Springs Recreation Center. The event was a chance for community members to get to know Chief Nisleit and learn about local safety issues. Other attendees included Captain Christopher Knighten, Lieutenant Natalie Stone, Lieutenant Duane Voss, Officer Christina Santos, Officer Julie Dragt, and other officers from the SDPD Northeastern Division, which oversees the region. Chief Nisleit assumed his new role as the city’s 35th police chief this past March, replacing retiring Chief Shelley Zimmerman. He has been

RECORDING ARTS STARS Diploma Program at Studio West Sees Alumni Shine
S
tudio West has been recording some of the biggest names in the music, TV, and film industry since it opened the doors in Rancho Bernardo in 1986. In 2004, they started offering educational programs for industry professionals and hobbyists and in 2011 launched a full-time, 12-month Diploma in Recording Arts. Now the program has been established for well over five years, and many of the graduates have gone on to find success in the industry at studios and production facilities all over the USA. Here is a brief snapshot of some of the Diploma Program’s most successful alumni.
ALEX GEHRING Alex (’16) immediately began working at SIR Studios in New York City as a resident engineer working with both audio and backline. He’s had the opportunity to work behind the board for many established and up-andcoming artists in Manhattan and runs live sound at some of the coolest clubs in the city, such as BlueNote and Subrosa.
SAM McCORMICK Sam (’16) interned at Hans Zimmer Studios (Remote Control Productions), where he was quickly hired to assist with music for numerous television pilots. In January of 2017, Sam began working as a sound designer and sample editor at Amper Music, a new software company that helps people create unique, royalty-free soundtracks.
JACOB POWELL Jacob (’16) interned at Studio West and at the La Jolla Music Society Summer Fest before landing a job as an audio engineer at SIR Studios in New York City, where he works alongside his classmate and friend Alex Gehring.
SHELBY MEDDOCK Shelby (’13) found success with the Reggae band The Movement. Their album Side by Side, which Shelby tracked and mixed, debuted at #1 on iTunes’ Reggae charts and #2 on Billboard’s. She is now the audio engineer at The Compound Studios, and has produced five albums.
ORI RENDLER Ori (’14) is a location sound mixer for television and film. Some of his clients include ESPN, NBC, E!, Discovery, National Geographic, VICE, CMT, TLC, and more.
JONAH LEVINE AND BRIAN KEIM
Jonah and Brian (’14) are co-founders of Analog Media Productions, a digital media company based out of San Diego and Los Angeles. Their focus on video production reflects the importance of visual images in the way we consume media.
STEVEN GROOT Steven (’16) became a sound mixer and editor at Turning Point, a non-profit Christian organization in Lakeside. Though the job required five years’ experience, thanks to his Diploma Program knowledge, he was offered the full-time position of sound mixer/editor. Steven works collaboratively with members of the television, radio, and digital media teams to provide audio mixes.
These are just a sample of the amazing things that Diploma students have found themselves a part of. Numerous grads have found success as independent sound engineers with large companies in LA, New York, Nashville, and other major cities across the U.S. If you are interested in pursuing a career in this field, just think of where our 12-month Diploma in Recording Arts can take you!

The game show, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, teams up the brightest children ages 8 to 12 from across the country to compete in complex challenges involving math, memory, logic, spelling, and more. Team 99 Problems advanced to the semi-finals before being defeated by Team Geeks on Fleek. “Genius Junior was an interesting experience for me to see not just how the show was shot but also to be on the inside on the making of the show,” Christopher shared. “I made a lot of cool friends.” Christopher is home-schooled in seventh grade, and his favorite subject is computer science. “When I grow up I want to work in the field of AI, creating artificial intelligence to make people’s lives easier.” He is also passionate about fencing, and is ranked first in the state and second in the country for his age group. He will compete internationally next season.

Fostering Hope Golf Classic photo by Lowell Tindell
Guests and community supporters gathered for Voices for Children’s (VFC) 26th Annual Fostering Hope Golf Classic. The two-day event kicked off with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and an exciting live auction at a private golf course clubhouse in La Jolla. Players returned the following day for the 18-hole tournament, with Rolf Benirschke, Russell Boring, Mike Brown, and Roy Burchill taking home the first place trophy. The Classic raised a total of $240,000 in support of VFC’s CourtAppointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. Founded in 1980, VFC is a private nonprofit organization that transforms the lives of abused, abandoned, or neglected children who pass through the foster care system in San Diego and Riverside Counties by providing them with trained volunteer CASAs. Since 2006, the organization has worked towards the ambitious goal of providing a CASA to every foster child who needs one. Learn more at www.speakupnow.org.
Local Girl Scouts Help the Homeless Local fifth graders in Girl Scout Troop 3118 recently completed their Bronze Award project. The girls spent three months learning about homelessness in San Diego and making 100 care packages for women and children, which they delivered to San Diego Rescue Mission in June. They collected donations from local businesses and families. The care packages included oral hygiene kits, toiletries, first aid kits, sunblock, sewing kits, blankets, tissues, pens and notepads, stuffed toys, and blankets. “[The girls] are hoping that their care packages will help them feel wanted and special, and give them the confidence they need to get back on their feet again,” shared Troop Leader Celeste Jacob. Troop 3118 includes Catherine Jacob, Emily McFarland, Eva Porter, Jyotsna Devadiga, Kyla Ho, Lauren Cotton, Marlie Berglie, Morghan Foster, Sophia Miller, and Sophia Staines. The troop is led by Celeste Jacob, Kara Porter, and Tammy Miller.
8th Annual Terry Spencer Memorial The 8th Annual Terry Spencer Memorial Golf Tournament will take place Sunday, Sept. 9 at The Vineyard golf course in Escondido. All proceeds will benefit the American Lung Association. The Spencer family has been proud to donate over $20,000 to the organization from the previous seven successful tournaments. After Rancho Peñasquitos community member Terry Spencer passed away from lung cancer, a neighbor started the first memorial golf tournament to both celebrate his life and his love of golf and contribute to the American Lung Association. Terry’s wife, Colleen, and her children Summer and Alec took on the event for future years. The tournament will be a scramble format with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Learn more and register with Colleen Spencer at 858-538-4148 or colleenspencer19@gmail.com.

THE SUPER DENTISTS: HELPING SAN DIEGO’S CHILDREN SMILE by BECCA BARR | photo provided by The Super Dentists
G
oing to the dentist can be a scary experience for children and, therefore, stressful for their parents. The Super Dentists, San Diego’s largest and most trusted pediatric dentistry and orthodontic office, hopes to make going to the dentist a positive experience for the whole family. For over 20 years, led by Dr. Nazli Keri (also known as the Tooth Keri) and Dr. Kami Hoss (also known as Dr. HaveOneSuperSmile), this team of exceptional pediatric dentists and orthodontists has fought cavities and crooked teeth. “By providing outof-this-world, kid-centered dental care,” said Dr. Hoss, “the Super Dentists are saving the world one smile at a time.” Their dedication to making dentistry enjoyable is evident in every aspect of their practice. “From the second you step into our theme park-designed offices, you’re someplace special with an accomplished, professional pediatric and orthodontic dental crew that cares about your kids,” shared Dr. Hoss. Their offices feature video games, TVs, movies, music, a toy store, dress-up area, selfie/photo-op area for the kids, and a newsstand and café serving Starbucks coffee for the parents. The Super Dentists focus on convenience, which is perfect for parents with hectic schedules. They have extended hours on weekdays and are open on weekends. They offer not only pediatric dentistry, but orthodontics, parent dentistry, and oral surgery
as well. They work with all insurances. “We never turn away any kid in need of dental care, regardless of their financial situation,” related Dr. Hoss. “We provide flexible and affordable financing.” And with several locations around San Diego County, including Carmel Valley, one is sure to be nearby. All of The Super Dentists are up-to-date on the latest innovations and advances in the field. “We are always on the forefront of new dental technologies,” said Dr. Hoss. “If there is a new device available for a quicker, more comfortable, and enhanced dental result, we have it.” The Super Dentists even have their own dental assisting school. They offer spa-like amenities, including flavored gloves, aromatherapy, warm towels, massage chairs, and virtual reality masks to keep their patients relaxed and pampered. Giving back to the community is another important principle to The Super Dentists, always with a focus on children. They host dental days, providing free dental treatment for kids up to 12 years old. Their annual Candy Buy-Back at Halloween lets kids save their teeth while sending their sweet treats to our troops. The Super Dentists also visit over 800 schools in San Diego to provide free school presentations about the importance of oral health. With a longtime and unending mission of serving San Diego’s children, The Super Dentists are truly a fixture in the local community.

Going For Gold
LOCAL GOLD AWARD GIRLS SCOUTS HONORED
W
estview High School (WVHS) students Lacey Bigelow, Hannah Lambert, and Jenna DiCarlo have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award – the organization’s highest honor – for demonstrating extraordinary leadership by identifying and tackling social issues. “Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is truly a remarkable achievement,” said Carol M. Dedrich, CEO of Girl Scouts San Diego. “These young women exemplify leadership in all its forms.” Troop 8256’s Lacey Bigelow is entering her senior year this fall. Her Gold Award project was inspired by her time volunteering at a hospital in Honduras, where she learned children were dying from dehydration. Lacey embarked on a community education campaign in the U.S. and led a team of volunteers making 1,200 simple dehydration kits. She distributed the kits in the Honduran village of Rio Blanco and taught families how to use them to treat children waiting for medical attention. Lacey intends to return
this year to continue outreach and distribution. Recent WVHS graduate and Troop 8125 member Jenna DiCarlo focused her Gold Award project on youth literacy, particularly for youths going through the justice system. She led educational community workshops on literacy and collected over 1,500 books in English and Spanish to donate to the San Diego Juvenile Hall library, where she installed a permanent book collection. Jenna joined Girl Scouts 13 years

ago as a Daisy Girl Scout. Hannah Lambert, also graduated from WVHS in the Class of 2018, used her Gold Award project to expand sports opportunities for children in her community. She realized the WVHS cross-country team had low participation because its feeder middle schools had no running teams, so she founded a team at Mesa Verde Middle School. The team is coached by Hannah’s high school teammates and participates in regular practices and intramural meets. Hannah is a member of Troop 8324, where she started as a Brownie. Each candidate spent one to two years developing and implementing their project, and they were among 58 Gold Award winners honored during a recent ceremony at Copley Symphony Hall. PUSD VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR RECOGNIZED FOR YEARS OF DEDICATION
P
oway Unified School District (PUSD) recently recognized community members who have made a big difference in local schools. The 2018 PUSD Volunteers of the Year are Krissa Jensen at Black Mountain Middle School (BMMS), Tom McFadden at Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS), and Andrea and Roger Mitchell at Canyon View Krissa Jensen Elementary School (CVES). Krissa is the BMMS Education Foundation president and Academy Parent Leader. Her leadership and fundraising efforts have raised tens of thousands of dollars to directly benefit students. As a liaison between the school and parents, she organizes volunteers, raises money, and makes important decisions for the Academy program. She is also a BMMS Odyssey of the Mind coach, and volunteers and leads at Westview High School as well. Tom was a founding member of the MC Educational Foundation (MCEF), served four years as MCEF President, and is currently treasurer. He is also on the MC Athletic Foundation board of directors and has helped a number of athletic booster programs. Beyond that,

ON LAND AND IN
THE WATER Enjoy Everything Mission Bay Has to Offer This Summer by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
S
weet summertime in San Diego means sunshine, lazy beach days, and outdoor barbecues. With its 27 miles of shoreline, grassy parks, playgrounds, and breathtaking views, Mission Bay is perhaps the best place to congregate with friends and family this season. The area is known as the perfect spot for aquatic sports, so you can try your hand at everything from sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding to jet skiing, wake boarding, and kite surfing. The bay is also home to boat docks, sailboat and motorboat rentals, and sport fishing and whale watching launching facilities. Mission Bay has plenty to offer for those who prefer to stay on land. Walk, jog, roller skate, or bike along the meandering paths surrounding the bay before enjoying an afternoon picnic in the sun. Strike up a game of volleyball or beach tennis. Break out the barbecue for a sunset dinner or gather around a waterfront bonfire for marshmallow roasting. Be sure to arrive early to claim your spot – it can be busy during the summer months. Visitors with furry friends in tow can venture onto Fiesta Island, a large peninsula within the bay with even more recreation options, including an off-leash dog beach and calm waters for swimming. You’ll also be in close proximity to several local communities – Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach – each with their own attractions for continued fun. So whether you’re looking for an action-packed afternoon adventure or just a place to relax and refresh, Mission Bay has something for everyone to experience this summer!

Top Considerations For Buying A Home At Any Age, Cont. by JEAN RILEY
TIPS FOR 30-SOMETHINGS Reevaluate your lifestyle and priorities. What has changed in your life since your 20s? Is it time to upgrade to a larger home to make room for your growing family? If you have children, considerations should be made for school district and access to major amenities like grocery stores, doctors’ offices, hospitals, and schools. Exercise restraint with a ‘fixer upper.’ Purchasing a home in need of upgrades can be an exciting challenge for many home buyers in this life stage. But be sure that any improvements made to your home don’t exceed those of the average home in your neighborhood. Go overboard on improvements and upgrades and you may not get that money back when you sell if it is beyond the value of the area.
TIPS FOR 40- AND 50-SOMETHINGS Think about a downsize. Are you an empty-nester or close to it? If you’re on the verge of a new stage in life, downsizing your home to a smaller, more manageable home can give you the freedom to enjoy traveling and the experiences that come with this life stage. Downsizing will generally lower your mortgage payment and can help reduce monthly expenses freeing up more money for your retirement, upgrading your home, traveling, and more. Consider ways to pay off your mortgage. If you have extra cash each month, putting more toward

your mortgage may be a smart financial move for you. Refinancing to a shorter-term loan may be another option. Of course, when you pay off your mortgage, you’ll miss out on some of the tax benefits, so be sure to talk to a financial advisor to determine the best move for you. Buying a home is a process, but comes with many benefits, no matter your age. Whether you’re ready to take the leap from renting to homeownership, need to upsize for a growing family, or are ready to downsize and enjoy retirement, PrimeLending can help you secure the financing for your dream home.

ome Consignment Center (HCC) is a fresh mix of previouslyloved items, as well as new products from model homes and designer showrooms and pieces from artists. “We choose great products and sell them at a great value. Our goal is to offer our customers an easy way to change out their décor at any time without the stress of selling it themselves. Our customers love change, and having a place to buy and sell gives them the freedom to update their nest without breaking the bank,” revealed Tracy Johnson, store manager. Home Consignment Center offers complimentary in-home previews for our consignors. A representative of HCC will go out to a consignor’s home and evaluate the potential consignment items. According to Johnson, this makes the consignment process much less of a burden for the consignor as they do not have to bring the items into the store to evaluate and price. “We also make it easy for sellers to transport items into the store. We have partnered with Awesome Movers to offer customers an easy and affordable way to get their furniture into the store for sale,” explained Johnson. The HCC sales strategy is also unique in that items arrive directly to the showroom instead of a warehouse or storage area. This open concept allows customers to see items as they arrive. As stated by Johnson, this creates a constant feeling of excitement among regulars and first-time shoppers alike. In the mid-1990s, the idea for Home Consignment Center was born. Christine and Johnny Crowell decided to open a furniture store with a similar business model to their successful antique auto consignment business. Jamece and John Fondnazio joined the Crowells and formed a partnership built on promoting high quality furniture and accessories at fair prices. The first store opened in Danville, California, and now there are 18 locations across the southwest, including the one in 4S Ranch. “In response to San Diego shoppers visiting the Orange County stores, the owners of HCC decided San Diego was a natural location to expand. Our 14,000-square-foot store is filled with natural light, a beautiful coffee bar and, of course, an eclectic mix of beautiful home furnishings,” stated Johnson. HCC’s 4S location is also launching a fine jewelry department, allowing customers to buy and seller jewelry along with home furnishings and accessories.
