Creating Lasting Memories
P U B L I S HE R
Derrick Breaux
M
y wife and I have been blessed with extended families that are very involved in our lives. Being a transplant from Texas (where most of my family still lives), I can appreciate that my wife is a rare third generation San Diegan. She is lucky to have most of her family close by. While we try to spend as much time as possible with both sides of the family, sometimes it gets a little difficult to get everyone together at the same time due to busy schedules and locations. Spending time with the family creates lasting memories. Six years ago, shortly after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather decided to start a tradition of an annual family reunion trip. So each summer, my wife and I take our kids to a lake house outside of Austin, TX for the annual Breaux Family Reunion. For a week, we get to visit and catch up with multiple generations of Breauxs. Our kids hang with their cousins, and the older generation can reminisce about the good ol’ days. It’s been an awesome family tradition that my late grandfather started and left to the family for years to come. My aunt, uncles, and dad are carrying on the annual tradition. And continuing with the creating memories theme, this year my wife’s family surprised everyone with a family trip (thank you T & D). We were able to spend a week with my wife’s parents and her brother and sister’s families. As we cruised through the blue Caribbean waters and various ports of call, we all had a blast visiting and spending time together. The entire experience – the six months leading up to the vacation and the vacation itself – was amazing. Our kids and their cousins ruled the ship (or at least they thought), and all of us adults acted like kids again – even my wife’s parents! There was no shortage of laughs and memorable moments, nor is there a shortage of great photos. I guarantee that we will all be talking about this for years to come. Since these vacations have had such a positive impact on us, I wanted to take a moment to make sure that our families know how much we appreciate spending time with them (yes, some of them actually read this magazine!). Thank you to my late grandparents. Thank you to my dad. Thank you to my aunts and uncles for continuing the traditions, and thank you to my in-laws for putting together a fantastic trip. We love you guys! And thank YOU for being a reader of 92129 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. STEAM
STAR KARA FAN SHINES AS A YOUNG SCIENTIST IN AND OUT OF SCHOOL by KELLEY GUSICH
W
hen Kara Fan was in the fifth grade, her FLL (First Lego League) Robotics team won the best robot design at the Southern California competition. Her interest in STEAM continued and expanded when she got to middle school and joined numerous science fairs. This past year, her project won first place in the microbiology category at the Greater San Diego Science Fair, and Kara was also nominated for the Broadcom MASTERS science competition. “I am fortunate to be selected as one of 10 finalists of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge 2019,” she said. Kara’s project is called Nanoparticles in Liquid Bandage. It involves the use of copper or silver nanoparticles in liquid bandage form to kill bacteria in a minor wound. “I wanted to find a different way to kill bacteria instead of using an antibiotics drug,” Kara explained. “Some challenges were synthesizing the nanoparticles because I couldn’t get the copper nanoparticles to kill bacteria. On the other hand, the silver nanoparticles did kill bacteria.” St. Paul, Minnesota – home of the 3M headquarters – will host the finals in October, where each finalist will be assigned a mentor to help them improve their project. “I am most excited to meet with other finalists in St. Paul and learn about their inventions,” Kara shared. Speaking of mentors, she’s been inspired by a passionate young scientist who won the challenge two years prior: Hannah Herbst. Her projects and TED Talks are motivations to Kara. “Hannah just won first place at Intel International science fair in June. I am so happy for her.” Outside of her science adventures, Kara plays golf and the piano. Torrey Highlands has been her home all her life, and she loves that she can walk to school from her neighborhood. She finished at Mesa Verde Middle School and will be moving on to Westview High in the fall, with a favorite school subject being, of course, science! Her volunteer experiences include food packing for people in Haiti and here at home for the San Diego Food Bank. “I don’t have any college plans yet,” she shared, “but I would like to become a doctor someday.”

Learning Problems Don’t Have to be Permanent There are Real and Lasting Solutions
Having a learning challenge can be compared to doing a job at the top of a ladder, whose lower rungs are unstable. Working in this way makes the job harder, and take longer to complete. By strengthening the lower rungs, or underlying skills, learning challenges can be eliminated, and work done at the top of the ladder can improve, with increased attention, focus, confidence and success!
“
After working with TLC, our daughter does all her homework without prompting, needs very little help, and her grades are all A’s and B+. She seems happy and confident. Her work with TLC has been invaluable, and we are very thankful!” -TLC parent
“All of the staff is amazing-- caring, patient, & positive. My son's clinician challenged him without pushing him to frustration. A worthwhile investment in my child's future!” -TLC parent “TLC is nothing short of a miracle. I will admit I was initially hesitant. It is not cheap, and the promises of academic progress seem too good to be true. However, I am not being dramatic when I say it was worth every penny and it changed my son's academic life forever.” - TLC parent

Local Star’s Great Escape JACKIE FOSTER SHARES HER VOICE IN DEBUT SINGLE
S
an Diego local and worldwide singing sensation Jackie Foster is launching the next step of her musical journey with the release of her first single and her first festival appearance. Last year, the Poway High School graduate appeared on season 14 of The Voice, reaching the semifinals under the guidance of her coach, Alicia Keys. The show was a whirlwind learning experience, and now Jackie is ready to make her individual mark on the music industry. Her single, “Great Escape,” debuted on July 26. Jackie was inspired to open up about the artistic struggles she faced after her time on The Voice ended. “I felt empty, like I lost my purpose,” she shared. “I lost the show which was like a family to me and I lost my
band all at once. But then I stopped and I realized, I’ve experienced success, I got national recognition, and I’m not going to let anything stop me from getting it again. Everything falling apart was my ‘great escape’ to finding my purpose.” She’s proud of what she’s accomplished with this song. “I sat in my room and started humming the guitar line. I couldn’t stop singing it for weeks!” she said. “My goal was to write a memorable song that was easy to sing along to but also empower listeners to face their fears and put all doubts aside.” Jackie is also looking forward to her debut festival appearance at Lollapalooza in Chicago this August. Find her there or on her social media channels under the handle @itsjackiefoster.

estview High School sophomore Lilith Freund recently won the National Youth Arts Award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Musical, recognizing her acting, singing, and dancing as Wednesday Addams in her school’s March 2019 production of The Addams Family. Lilith shared, “I feel honored as I worked very hard to connect with Wednesday Addams, so being recognized for that was very meaningful.” Even though she has been singing most of her life, taking dance lessons since the age of three, and had her first professional performance as Cindy Lou Who in the Old Globe
Theater’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas at the age of eight, Lilith was still hesitant about mastering her Wednesday Addams character. She revealed, “This was a role that was challenging for me as I am a very upbeat person whereas Wednesday is not; she is dark and only started to find a light inside of her later in her life. Being in this production was rewarding, though, because of the new connections I made and the positive reinforcement I received.” Lilith exercises the opposite qualities of Wednesday Addams by utilizing her social and outgoing nature through volunteer work at her temple. On Sundays she tutors the younger children in

their studies, and as a member of her temple’s Teen Board, Lilith participates in various social action events every month, such as feeding the homeless and collecting clothes for the needy. Living in the Las Lenas community of PQ perfectly suits Lilith because it complements her friendly demeanor. Lilith explained, “Rancho Peñasquitos is a large enough community that I’m able to meet new people constantly, but it’s also tight-knit enough that I can keep a close inner circle.” That feeling of camaraderie is also why
Lilith appreciates Westview High School. She elaborated, “What I enjoy most about my high school is its spirited nature and sense of community.” At school, Lilith’s favorite classes are English and Dramatic Arts. She exclaimed, “Both of these subjects let me express my ideas and feelings creatively, whether through writing or through theatrical pieces.” In the future Lilith intends to study musical theater or liberal arts in college, and in the meantime she’ll continue to shine on the stage and beyond.

KID COACHES TRAIN THEIR OWN COACH AT THE ANNUAL COACHES CUP by KELLEY GUSICH
W
ith over $30,000 in funds raised this year, North County Gymnastics and Gyminny Kids have once again combined their efforts to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital. The Coaches Cup happened on June 9, gathering athletes and their coaches from North County Gymnastics/ Gyminny Kids, Pacific Coast Gymnastics, Poway Gymnastics, and the Peach Pit. The event combined student demonstrations and circus performances, and in an interesting role reversal, the top fundraising athlete for each coach then got to coach that coach for the event. “Most children think an adult over the age of 14 is old,” Daniel Gundert, Director of Operations and Head Team Coach for North County Gymnastics and Gyminny Kids noted, “so the fundraising kids think the idea of their old coach competing is just hilarious!” Poway Gymnastics donated the equipment for the event, at a value well over $10,000, and the time and effort the fundraisers put into the event has proven the most heartwarming and memorable part. From lemonade stands to collecting pledges door-to-door, kid athletes for the Coaches Cup bring everyone together for the crucial cause of children’s health. “This
is what we believe as a company,” Daniel affirmed, “but more importantly, this is the life lesson we want to teach our children. If you want something in life, you need to give first without expectation of anything in return. It’s not about the competition, it’s about giving back!” The goal for the Coaches Cup is to see the event grow every year, with a bigger picture vision to eventually have one in every major city across the United States. This way, any company with the title “coach” can fundraise for their local hospital. Imagine any sport: CrossFit, swimming, football, wrestling, diving, track and field – the list of possibilities is endless – with athletes giving their time and coaches getting to compete in the sport they love to benefit the greater good. “Rady Children’s has touched so many of our lives including my son, our employees, and customers, to name a few. Rady’s truly does great things for families regardless of their ability to pay for medical services,” shared Daniel. The 2019 Coaches Cup saw North County Gymnastics as its top fundraiser, followed by Pacific Coast and Poway Gymnastics. “I was sore for a week after the day of the competition, but it was the highlight of my year,” Daniel said. “That feeling of giving is something we want to pass on.”

COMMUNITY STUFF
Small Business of the Year
Terry Spencer Memorial Golf Tournament
Second Chance Beer Company, an independent brewery founded in Carmel Mountain Ranch, was recently named the 77th Assembly District 2019 Small Business of the Year. The business stands out for its commitment to environmental sustainability. Through its charity program, Giving Second Chances, the company donates one percent of all annual sales to organizations that serve people, animals, and the planet. More than 70% of the company’s furnishings are upcycled, recycled, and repurposed as well. “Second Chance Beer Company has served as a worthy example for many businesses to follow,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “Despite being a relatively new brewery, the company has contributed tremendously to both the economic strength and environmental sustainability of our community.” The brewery was founded by Marty Mendiola, Curtis Hawes, and Virginia Morrison. In addition to the original Carmel Mountain Ranch brewery and taproom, they now have a tasting room in North Park.
The 9th Annual Terry Spencer Memorial Golf Tournament is planned for Sunday, Sept. 8. The event will take place at the Vineyard Golf Course beginning at 1:30 p.m. All proceeds from the tournament benefit the American Lung Association. “Everyone should breathe freely – with your participation, we are ensuring the lung association’s quest for clean air and the end to lung disease,” shared event organizer Colleen Spencer. Through eight successful tournaments, the Spencer family has been able to donate close to $40,000 to the American Lung Association. The golf tournament fundraising concept is a fitting tribute to Terry and his love of golf. The memorial event will include a scramble format, golf contests, silent auction, raffle, and a Kendra Scott in-store event. Additional information and registration is available from Colleen Spencer at 858-538-4148 or colleenspencer19@gmail.com.
PowPAC Presents Private Lives PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, kicks off a new season with Private Lives. The classic comedy revolves around two ex-spouses on honeymoons with their new spouses – accidentally booking the same hotel at the same time. Old passion resurfaces, and impulsive decisions set off a humorous, tumultuous chain of changing partnerships. This production is directed by local actor and director Larry Steckling. The cast includes Linda Englund, Richard Rivera, Eliza Huf, James Winkler, and Diane Thrasher. The comedy by Noel Coward opens Friday, Aug. 9 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 8. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., with an additional Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. on Aug. 24. Find tickets and more information at www.powpac.org.
Nonprofit of the Year The 77th Assembly District’s 2019 Nonprofit of the Year is the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The organization serves an average of 350,000 people per month, distributing food directly to San Diegans in need at more than 200 sites every month as well as providing food for more than 500 other nonprofit feeding programs, such as soup kitchens and churches. “The San Diego Food Bank has served an important role in our community through the years,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, who presented the award. “I truly appreciate their work providing food and other resources to those who are in need in the San Diego region.” Around 24,000 people volunteer at the nonprofit warehouse every year and provided 28 million pounds of food in 2018. “It takes a community to feed a community, and this award honors the wonderful people who make our mission possible,” said James A. Floros, San Diego Food Bank President and CEO. Learn more at www.sandiegofoodbank.org.
Spring Gala Supports Animals in Need photos by Amy Huzil
Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 31st Annual Spring Fling Gala, Our Extravagant World Tour, took place at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in June. Guests enjoyed food from 20 local restaurants, entertainment by Haute Chile Productions, and exciting silent and live auctions. The event, co-chaired by Jamie Carr and Erin Combs, raised over $445,000 to support the pets and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center, including: saving more orphan pets through the Adoptions Transfer Program; serving more homeless San Diegans through Pets Without Walls; and continuing to provide unique opportunities to support the bond between humans and animals through the Humane Education Program. Helen Woodward Animal Center also recently celebrated the opening of its brand new pet Adoptions Building, which will help the center better serve the approximately 3,500 animals that come through its doors each year. M
anaging your family’s health care is not usually top of mind until a loved one is sick or you’ve had a life change. Choosing the right care can be overwhelming and confusing, but selecting a primary care doctor ahead of time helps ensure the best care for your family when the need arises. A primary care doctor coordinates your family’s routine and specialty care. Finding the right doctor will depend on your unique needs. If you haven’t given much thought to this important decision, here’s a good place to start: Decide which type of primary care doctor you want. There are four types of primary care doctors: • Pediatricians care for children and adolescents. • Family medicine doctors treat the whole family, from infants to older adults. • Internal medicine doctors treat adults age 18 and up. • Internal medicine/pediatric doctors are board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, and treat people of all ages. Think about your personal preferences. • Are you more comfortable with a male or female doctor? • Do you want your doctor’s office close to your home or work? • Do you need a doctor who speaks a language other than English? • Which hospitals does the doctor admit to? Consider convenience. Many North County families that have busy schedules look for a doctor who offers a wide variety of ways to access care. These can include: • Video and phone appointments. • The convenience of a medical center where many services, such as pharmacy, lab, radiology, and urgent care, are all under one roof. • Same-day appointments. • After-hours pediatric care for when the kids are sick. • The ability to securely manage your and your family’s health care online by messaging your doctor’s office, making appointments, viewing lab results, and more. Confirm your insurance coverage. When you find the ideal doctor, you’ll need to verify if they are in your health plan network. Call the number listed on your insurance card to confirm, and let your insurance carrier know you’ve selected that person as your new primary care doctor. Sharp Rees-Stealy can help you navigate your options and make it easy to find a doctor. Plus, they accept almost all health insurance plans. Select your doctor at sharp.com/srsdoctor or by calling 858-264-2539.

hether in her warm, welcoming office or at home in the North County community, Dr. Susan Hong is committed to fostering lifelong relationships. Her patients’ needs and comfort are her highest priority, and she uses her years of expertise and cutting-edge technology to create lasting smiles. Dr. Hong has practiced dentistry for nearly 20 years. A native New Yorker, she ran a private practice in downtown New York City and taught at Columbia University School of Dentistry before moving to San Diego. She spent 10 years practicing downtown before deciding she wanted to connect more closely with her North County community, where she lives in Rancho Peñasquitos with her husband and three children. She opened her Rancho Bernardo family and cosmetic dentistry practice in 2015, continuing to provide comprehensive, compassionate care with the highest-quality technology. Her office is equipped with heated massage chairs and televisions, and she offers sedation for anxious patients, but more importantly, her focus on the whole patient creates an effective, trust-based relationship. A key part of that is staying up to date with the latest developments in dental care. Dr. Hong has recently implemented a new technology that allows for a radiation free way to examine teeth like never before. DEXIS CariVu is a new alternative to traditional X-rays that bathes individual teeth in near-infrared light while capturing live video and still images. Because it photographs the tooth from multiple angles, CariVu is especially useful for discovering cracks and early-stage cavities, letting Dr. Hong recommend preventive measures and individualized treatment. “It is a wonderful adjunct to the technology that I already use in providing comprehensive care,” Dr. Hong shared, adding that CariVu is also beneficial for young children and pregnant women who want to avoid ionizing radiation. Dr. Hong also offers Invisalign, laser periodontal treatment, metal-free restorations, implant restorations, and TMJ treatment. Dr. Kami Hoss Reinvents the Toothbrush

ccording to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, childhood tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children right now. It is four times more common than early childhood obesity, five times more common than asthma, and 20 times more common than juvenile diabetes. In fact, one in five California kindergarteners has had more than seven cavities and 71% of California third graders currently have dental decay. Because oral care is a critical part of overall health, poor oral health can impact a child’s long-term physical health and even longevity. Dr. Kami Hoss and The Super Dentists have introduced The Super Toothbrush, an interactive toothbrush that encourages children to brush their teeth properly with a special integrated augmented reality component. Each toothbrush includes a magic sticker for the bathroom mirror that, when paired with VIVARRA Dental app, brings The Tooth Keri to life to remind kids how to brush and floss their teeth correctly. The Super Toothbrush also features a two-minute toothbrushing song so children know how long they should be brushing, as well as premium Tynex DuPont bristles for comfort and a long-lasting battery. “Parents have been asking us for toothbrush recommendations for years,” said Dr. Kami Hoss, Co-founder of The Super Dentists. “We developed this toothbrush with the latest in augmented reality technology, to make brushing fun for kids. Getting them to develop good oral health care habits while they’re young is part of an overall whole-person health care plan that will benefit them for the rest of their life.” There are four Super Toothbrushes featuring The Super Dentists superhero and villain characters – Dr. Have One Super Smile, The Tooth Keri, Cavitar, and Molar – available in all The Super Dentists offices or on Amazon. A collector’s set with all four characters will be available this fall. Other oral health care products, including toothpastes and mouth washes, will follow. op-notch medical care is key to keeping our families healthy and happy – and that goes for our four-legged family members too. That’s why San Diego native Dr. Laura Greenlee Johnson grew up dreaming of becoming a small animal veterinarian. She’s worked with both human and animal patients over the course of her education and career. After graduating from University of California San Diego’s Muir College, Laura worked for several years as part of a team conducting cardiovascular health research in children through early school intervention programs, while also completing a master’s degree in exercise physiology. At 28 years of age, Laura decided it was time to follow her childhood dreams and ventured off to the Caribbean to the island of St. Kitts in order to attend Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. She thrived there and even earned the seventh-semester achievement award for her class, which is given to the top student at the end of their final semester of the pre-clinical portion of studies in St. Kitts before heading off to the full clinical year at another U.S. veterinary school. Laura attended Washington State University for her senior clinical year of veterinary school and embraced the change of living in and exploring Washington, Oregon, and Idaho during this fast-paced and intensive portion of her veterinary education. Dr. Greenlee, as she was known by for the next 14 years while working at All Creatures Hospital, Inc. in Del Mar as an associate veterinarian, married her husband Brian Johnson, a longtime Fairbanks Ranch resident, in 2010 in Rancho Santa Fe. They started a family, which now consists of three boys: Nate (8) and Luke and Blake (4-year-old twins). In 2018, Laura decided it was time to follow her next dream and embarked on the journey to establish her own veterinary clinic. After 16 years of practicing, Laura had established a vision of what she felt an ideal veterinary clinic would be like. She’s worked hard to bring that vision to life at Santaluz Animal Care (SAC). SAC provides general practice veterinary medicine, dentistry, and soft tissue surgery (including spays, neuters, mass removals, and other basic procedures), and orthopedic and specialty surgeries can be scheduled at SAC with a mobile board-certified surgeon. The practice specializes in the care of dogs, cats, and some exotics including rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, and reptiles. SAC treats sick pets and handles veterinary emergencies, as well as focusing on preventative medicine and wellness visits. The office offers a variety of prescription dietary options and medicines onsite and through their competitively-priced online pharmacy. In addition to these traditional services, SAC also offers complementary therapies (alternative medicine), including acupuncture, Chinese veterinary medicine, cold laser therapy, and regenerative medicine. Dr. Johnson and her highly trained staff also use diagnostic tools that are progressive and unique, such as digital thermal imaging, stance analysis, abdominal ultrasound, and digital radiography, as well as digital dental radiography. “The breadth of our offerings, as well as the Fear Free approach to our patients and true quality customer
service, is what sets us apart and goes above and beyond the standard veterinary practice experience,” explained Dr. Johnson. Laura’s team members flocked to join her clinic’s staff upon reading about the clinic’s vision in the job descriptions. They are now a cohesive unit, and the clinic’s dream is now their dream job too. “We can’t wait to show you and your furry family members around our Fear Free-inspired, sPAW-like, gorgeous veterinary clinic,” shared Laura. “Oh – and I almost forgot – we also offer full-service pet grooming on site!” August | September 2019 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • 33

by KATE GLENN
T
he Town Council has a new executive board for the 2019-2020 term: Kate Glenn, President; Jonathan Palinkas, Vice President; Erin Gentile, Secretary; Brian Reschke, Treasurer; and Alan Gin, Parliamentarian. The new executive team is eager to bring an energized perspective of what it means to commune together in Rancho Peñasquitos through our events, community grants, and sponsorships program that enrich the quality of our lives in PQ. Our summer is usually over after Labor Day or the first day of school. The Poway Unified School District’s first day of classes is Aug. 21. We have two Movies in the Park that are always fun for the whole family! Whether you’ve lived here for years or just arrived, we welcome everyone to take on a ‘community perspective’ with us as we head into fall. Through community events and programs that foster goodwill, it’s easy to get lost in the background. The Town Council is here to support the community interest and rely on the support of community donations to bring our events to life. Our events bring a sense of inclusion for all and a safe place to call home. This is your invitation to get involved with us. We have six community events annually, with a huge fundraising campaign to restore the annual summer fireworks show in PQ for July 2020. Join us, roll up your sleeves, and let’s rock our community spirit by making new memories with new friends and neighbors starting right now.

SADDLE UP IN SAN DIEGO Take to the Trails and Make New Equine Friends This Summer by LAINEY KRAL
T
here’s nothing quite like leaning back in the saddle or petting a velvety nose while the blue summer sky stretches above you. San Diego is home to a vibrant, varied equine community. Whether you’re the parent of an enthusiastic future cowgirl, a grown-up barn kid who hasn’t ridden in years, or just plain curious, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and experience something new. Besides lessons and summer camps, guided trail rides are a great opportunity for new riders or those just getting back in the saddle. Options include giddying up through the hills of Poway, riding through the surf on a beach ride, and wine tasting adventures in Temecula. Many facilities offer both public and private rides – especially for larger groups, it’s smart to call ahead to confirm availability. Be sure to check the weather policy too, in case of cancellations. If getting in the saddle isn’t your style, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the world of horses from the ground. The Del Mar Racetrack may be San Diego’s most famous equine destination, but don’t miss the hunter, jumper, and equitation events at nearby Showpark of San Diego. The 2019 Poway Rodeo is also coming up on Sept. 27 and 28, showcasing Western disciplines like barrel racing and roping. San Diego even has a thriving polo scene – check out organizations like Lakeside Polo Club, Poway Polo Club, or San Diego Polo Club for beginner lessons or upcoming events to watch. You can also combine a love of horses with a love of making a difference. The San Diego area has a number of therapeutic riding centers and equine rescues that are often open to volunteers and support. Whatever your interests and wherever you go, whether you’re sitting astride a thoroughbred or a pony, remember to pause for a bit and just enjoy the moment. Have a good ride!

STABLE SAFETY • Wear closed-toe shoes, and strap on your helmet before getting in the saddle. • When meeting an unfamiliar horse, always ask its owner whether it’s okay to pet it, feed treats, or take photos. • Walk, don’t run! Sudden movements and loud noises can make horses nervous. • Pay attention to facility rules and listen to your instructor – every barn and every horse is unique!
