FROM THE PUBLISHER VOL. 9, NO. 3 TM

Horsing Around

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux

I

’m from Southeast Texas, so I’ve been on my fair share of horses growing up. My good friend had a couple of horses that we would saddle up and ride to the levee. And no, I’m not making this stuff up – there really was a levee about a mile from my childhood home. I’m pretty sure that people have written songs about this. When I met my wife about 20 years ago, I learned that she grew up with horses. Over the years, she shared many stories of riding on the endless trails in Poway – many of which have long been taken over by developments and homes. The time that she spent with her horses growing up made a lasting impression that she holds close to her heart. Our youngest daughter, Audrey, started taking riding lessons a couple of years ago. Although she has traditionally split her extracurricular hours between soccer, softball, and music, we noticed that she quickly developed a strong passion for horseback riding. Last year Audrey approached us with the idea of adopting or rescuing a horse. At first, we thought the idea was absurd. But this didn’t deter her. While she could have accepted our decision and moved on, instead, she began developing a plan and documenting everything that needed to take place in order to accomplish her goal. She presented her plan to us – which included her own financial and time commitments. And as you may have guessed by reading this and seeing the photo, Audrey did find a horse that needed a new home. In fact, she actually found two horses (eight-year-old brothers from different mothers). Thankfully the horses had not been abused, but they had been neglected. Unfortunately, they were left in their stalls at a facility in Los Angeles with very little socializing and human attention for the past year and a half. Little did these two horses know, they were about to get the full attention of a very determined and dedicated 13-year-old girl. Over the past couple of months, we have watched these horses transform from nervous and shy creatures to warm and loving family members. I have observed a beautiful bond develop between my daughter and these giant animals that is very difficult to describe. Although I was skeptical at first, what started out to be a project for my daughter and wife has turned into a family affair. It has been refreshing to take an hour here and an hour there to join them at the stables. Time seems to slow down while we are there. Technology is optional at best. It is very tranquil and therapeutic. But most importantly, I get to watch and be involved while memories are made that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

Speech Trek

WINNERS FROM 1ST ANNUAL AAUW POWAY-PEÑASQUITOS CONTEST

A

San Diego-wide speech contest recently awarded prizes to two local students. The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Poway-Peñasquitos branch’s first annual Speech Trek contest asked students to write and present fiveminute speeches on the topic, “How Can We Eliminate Violence Aimed at Our Schools?” Dominique Ruedaflores, a freshman at Ramona Convent Secondary School, won the $500 firstplace prize. She will continue in the competition to represent AAUW PowayPeñasquitos at the California AAUW Speech Trek semifinals in March. The top three students from the semi-finals will compete at a state-wide convention held in San Diego on April 6. Skandhaa Subra won the $250 second-place prize. Skandhaa is a freshman at Mt. Carmel High School.

The Poway-Peñasquitos contest was held Jan. 12 at the Rancho Peñasquitos Library. Judges were David Brengle, COO of Acutus Medical; Darshana Patel, Poway Unified School District Board Member; and Barbara Bush, Ph.D., adjunct faculty member at Miramar College, and lecturer at the University of California San Diego and University of San Diego. AAUW Poway-Peñasquitos has over 100 members from 4S Ranch, Carmel Valley, Escondido, Poway, Ramona, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, and Scripps Ranch. In addition to the Speech Trek contest, the organization runs an annual Scholarship Fund and a Tech Trek program that sends eighth grade girls to a science camp every year. Their annual spring fundraiser, Cover to Cover, will be held May 4. Learn more at powayarea-ca.aauw.net. 

lexxis Brown, a Park Village resident and a junior at Westview High School, is very driven and thrives on challenges. Whether through sports, academics, or volunteering, Alexxis enjoys pushing herself and then reaping the rewards. At the moment, Alexxis is reaping the reward of contemplating over 200 college choices for track and field and soccer opportunities, and she’s hoping for a full scholarship. There are numerous athletic achievements Alexxis can be proud of. For example, she broke her school’s record in the long jump by 18 inches with a jump of 18 feet, 8 inches. Also, she can throw the javelin 123 feet! She even earned her All American status in two events last summer (the heptathlon and the javelin throw) at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships. In addition, Alexxis is on her school’s Varsity soccer team, and was the second highest scorer in the league last year. Discussing her role models, Alexxis revealed, “My mom and dad have worked really hard in their careers and they have high expectations for me, but they are very open and help me to question things that I don’t understand and to see all sides before making a stance.” That critical thinking prowess, instilled in her by her parents, has perfectly prepared Alexxis for the rigors of education. Her favorite subject is biology/DNA sequencing, and Alexxis hopes to study it in college and eventually work for the FBI. Alexxis proclaimed, “Westview is a very competitive school academically and while many of my classes are really hard, I know I will be well prepared for college. I also love to compete athletically, and I am hoping to possibly go to the Olympics one day.” Always busy, Alexxis still manages to volunteer in her free time by coaching youths in various sports disciplines. Plus, in addition to track and field and soccer, Alexxis surfs, wake boards, wake surfs, skis, snowboards, rock climbs, rides dirt bikes, and plays flag and tackle football. As for the latter, she said, “It would be really cool to play in the NFL and be the first female wide receiver or running back. It is still an idea in my head. We will see where life takes me!” 

Local School Wins International Award

PQ Artist Exhibits Work

Adobe Bluffs Elementary School recently received the Confucius Classroom of the Year award, presented at the 13th Annual Confucius Institute Global Conference in Chengdu, China. Principal Edward Park and a small group of educators and students traveled to accept the award. “I consider this award a prestigious honor,” said Park. “To be recognized internationally for our efforts to create world-class learners and global citizens right here in Poway Unified, and to be the only elementary school in the world to be recognized by the Confucius Institute is a reflection on our amazing staff and students.” Adobe Bluffs earned the award for the quality and scales of its teaching and cultural programs. The school’s Dual Language Immersion Program consists of bilingual academic instruction for a classroom with equal numbers of native English-speaking and Mandarin-speaking students. The Foreign Language in Elementary School program gives all students at the school twice-weekly Mandarin language and Chinese culture lessons. Learn more at www.powayusd.com/abes.

Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church Gallery is showcasing the work of Rancho Peñasquitos artist Kathryn Peterson through the end of February. The exhibit, titled One Hundred Years of Women, includes 50 of Kathryn’s pieces. The artwork represents her six women-centered themes: action, strength, intelligence, adaptability, vulnerability, and ancestors. She works in a broad variety of mediums, including watercolors, collages, oils, pastels, Styrofoam dinner plates, and wearable dresses made from recycled plastic grocery bags. The exhibit is open daily with free admission. The following month, Kathryn will be taking part in a joint exhibit with six other award-winning female artists at Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Off the Pedestal will run Feb. 27 through March 30, and the center is open Tuesdays through Fridays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 858-668-4693 to confirm hours on performance days. Learn more at www.kathrynpeterson.org.

Boy Scouts Adds All-Girls Troops Boy Scouts, recently rebranded to Scouts BSA, is forming new all-girls troops throughout the country, including Troop 1667 here in Rancho Peñasquitos. The troop is sponsored by St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, as is its partner boys’ troop, Troop 667. It is one of four all-girls troops forming in North County so far. “I want to help start this troop to be able to offer my twin daughter and son each the same opportunities in Scouts BSA,” said Lori Bende, Troop 1667 Scoutmaster. Her son, Ronald is bridging over from Cub Scouts to Troop 667, as Rhoda is to Troop 1667. “The excitement and energy these girls have is amazing!” Each Scouts BSA troop will consist of girls or boys, but troops will not be co-ed. Boy troops and girl troops may occasionally attend special activities together, but each troop will meet separately and work toward achievements in a single-gender environment. Learn more at www.troop1667.com.

DIAMOND GATEWAY WOMEN’S ORGANIZATION CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF SUPPORTING LOCAL WOMEN

g n i r i Insp CONNECTIONS

S

ince its founding in 1998, Diamond Gateway Women’s Organization (DGWO) has provided a warm welcome for North County women. The close-knit community meets in Rancho

Peñasquitos for community service, educational speakers, and a chance to meet and connect with new and lifelong friends. Read along to learn more from DGWO President Nora Nido.

Q&A WITH NORA NIDO PRESIDENT When and why was Diamond Gateway Women’s Organization founded? What is the organization’s mission? 1998, and it was formed as a continuation of “Welcome Wagon” in the area when it disbanded.

How has the club grown and evolved over the years? The organization has invited friends and published announcements inviting women of all ages in the community to meetings. It has evolved into meetings with a variety of programs such as guest speakers on current events and topics covering everything from health to being a private investigator or hall of fame songwriter. Others included authors, theater performers, musicians, or dancers. Refreshments are also provided at meetings. Additionally, members have formed groups for bunco, dominoes, bridge, crafting, gardening, a “lunch bunch,” and occasionally attending plays or movies.

PRESIDENT AT- A- G L A N C E NAME:

Nora Nido

TERM:

2018-2019

PROFESSION: Realtor, RE/MAX United, Scripps Ranch COMMUNITY:

Sabre Springs

How did you personally become involved with DGWO? A client invited me to a meeting in 2015! Everyone was so nice and I enjoyed it so much I kept going! Early members were new to the area and saw announcements about meetings or were invited by members.

What is your current role within the organization? Current president. I hold monthly board meetings, but since I work full time and I’m involved with other clubs, I’m lucky to have board members that help with membership, programs, and new ideas to increase fundraising for nonprofits at our annual spring luncheon. We all do what we can, when we can, and it always works out.

What is the most rewarding thing about your role? The most challenging? To be part of an organization that is collectively kind and fun while giving so much back to their community is really cool and inspiring. The only challenge is in getting new members to replace members that move away. We know we have to pioneer a better online presence to make it easier for people to find us!

“WE ALL DO WHAT WE CAN, WHEN WE CAN, AND IT ALWAYS WORKS OUT.”

C O V E R F E AT U R E What are the primary goals of DGWO? To provide a place for women to socialize, while raising funds for local nonprofits.

When and where does the club meet? How does a typical meeting go? Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at Church of the Nazarene, 10060 Carmel Mountain Rd., San Diego, CA 92129, at 7 p.m. A typical meeting would start with introduction of guests, then scheduled program, refreshments break, meeting, and raffle. Our February speaker will be a travel expert speaking on the topic of travel tips and deals, and everyone in attendance will get a travel voucher. There is no meeting in March since we just focus on the spring luncheon that month.

Is there anything you’d like to share that most people don’t know about DGWO? This is our 20th year for our annual fundraising luncheon to help our community. We would love for women of all ages to join us!

Is there anything else you would like to add for our 92129 Magazine readers? Thank you for your continued support in attending, and to all the local businesses that donate gift certificates and services which help make it a huge success! We really appreciate it. 

Joy of Helping Others My name is Emma Narvaez and I am a seventh grader at Mesa Verde Middle School. I’ve lived in the Peñasquitos area for almost my whole entire life. I’m a part of Troop 8852 and I’ve been a Girl Scout since kindergarten. As Girl Scouts, we do a lot of volunteer work to make our community a better place. This is one of my volunteer experiences I’ve done as a Girl Scout.

modern ideas taught me to be thankful that I don’t have to go through the challenges these seniors must have witnessed when they were my age. They didn’t have the internet to learn in an efficient way or have social media to interact with friends and family when they were far apart. These struggles they had to face must have been extremely difficult, and I’m very blessed to be growing up in such an advanced society.

To earn our Bronze Award, we volunteered at The Arbors. The Arbors is a retirement home where seniors are treated with hospitality. As a troop, we visited The Arbors to bond with the residents there and learn about their past. Learning about what it was like without today’s inventions, technology, social media, and other

Aside from talking to the elders about life in their generation, we hosted special events to make the seniors feel welcomed in their new home. From ice cream socials to Christmas caroling, everyone always had a ball. Each girl in our troop was assigned an elder that we spent quality time with. I enjoyed meeting

with them a couple times every few months. Some of the seniors were even Girl Scouts themselves, and they told us their stories. Volunteering is a priceless cause, done spontaneously without anything in return. Helping others without a reward is far more valuable than money itself. The act of volunteering brings out contentment and joy from me and the people we help in our community. Even the smallest things we can do to help our community will impact our world in millions of ways. My personal experience volunteering in Rancho Peñasquitos made me realize what just ourselves, a few ice breakers, and a couple of snacks can do to make our community filled with joy and glee. 

Pride: Growing Up PQ Every year, our community welcomes a celebration of individuality and visibility for an often-oppressed group. The LGBTQ+ Pride Parade that we host brings people together to show them that they are not alone, and that their experiences are as valid as anyone else’s. Now, as ever, this act brings hope to those among us who are afraid to live as their true selves, and brings comfort to everyone who has gone through these experiences. This is why I love volunteering at Pride every year. I have been playing with the Pride Youth Marching Band ever since I was old enough. We rehearse leading up to the event, we do a televised performance to raise awareness, and we march in the parade. Everyone involved is a volunteer, which creates an amazing community.

All of the music we perform has special meaning to the audience, and it is a beautiful phenomenon in which to participate. Our best tune is the one we perform as the flag is raised during the Stonewall Rally, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, as originally performed by Judy Garland. She is an important icon to the LGBTQ+ community, and the song is emblematic of everything the community desires. It speaks of being led out of the shadows, and Dorothy as a character accepts her friends for being different. This combines into a heartwarming and iconic song. Tears of joy are often seen among those attending. The fact that there exists a day to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community is a magnificent event in itself, so if we can add a little more to make it what it is, then that is an accomplishment.

Personally, I am driven to add to this celebration by my own experiences in the LGBTQ+ community. I have two moms, whom I love very much. They have had such a positive impact in my life, in the best way that a parent can. Furthermore, I identify as bisexual, which means I am attracted to both my gender and others. This has led me to be more invested in LGBTQ+ rights within the current political climate. I work to spread visibility, understanding, and compassion among my community, and I love doing it! I feel so fortunate to be a citizen of PQ, where I feel safe to be myself and know that I will be accepted. 

PRO ETIQUETTE TIPS: Dress to impress. While casual attire is generally acceptable for attending a daytime show, nighttime shows warrant slightly more formal dress. And don't forget a jacket or coat – the theater can be chilly!

Arrive early. Try to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the show to find your seat, read the program, and listen to any important announcements.

Turn off your cell phone. Be sure to silence any electronic devices that could be a distraction to the performers on stage or the people around you.
