Mother’s Day
A
lthough Mother’s Day was last month, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write about it this issue. I have been blessed with great mothers surrounding me throughout my life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day each year, I often reflect on my childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood. I was raised by a very strong and supportive mother, and as a first grandchild, I also spent many of my younger years with my grandmother. Unfortunately, these two wonderful women are no longer with us today, but the memories and life lessons that I received from them are forever held close to my heart. Having lost my mother to a tragic automobile accident back in 2010 and my grandmother to cancer more recently, you would think that Mother’s Day would approach with some apprehension. However, much to my pleasant surprise, I’ve discovered that Mother’s Day has become one of the most meaningful holidays of the year. Even though the day typically starts with a little sadness – more like a period of reflection – it quickly turns into a very deep and significant day. Not only do I have an opportunity to celebrate the great memories surrounding my mother and grandmother, I also have the privilege of having several more fantastic mothers that surround me, support me, and make our lives more meaningful. While there are too many wonderful mothers in our friends and family sphere to mention in this letter, I would like to take a moment to recognize a few of them. First on the list, I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Jessica, for being such an awesome mother to our three kids (as well as many of the neighborhood kids). There are quite a few kiddos around the community (some adults in college now) that have grown up calling you “Momma” Breaux. We are all lucky to have you do what you do. Happy Mother’s Day, Jessica! Derrick Breaux I would also like to take a moment to send a heartfelt Publisher thank you to my mother-in-law Trish and mother-in-law Doreen. Not only are you both incredible influences on our family, but you are also wonderful grandmothers to our kids. We are all extremely happy to have you be a major part of our lives. Happy Mother’s Day, Trish and Doreen! Last but not least, I would like to recognize my sister. Not only are you a great sister, you are also a wonderful mother. I find great joy in watching the way you raise your three children, often displaying the incredibly familiar and nurturing parenting that our mother used with the two of us growing up. It warms my heart beyond words. Happy Mother’s Day, Angelique! And a belated happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the world (past and present) that have impacted our lives. I hope your Mother’s Day was filled with lots of hugs, special memories, love, and laughter.

A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // Dave Currie
“Dave Currie is one of the hardest working coaches in the industry who develops some of the most talented young players in Southern California.”
I came to SD in 1995 and started coaching for Carlsbad Lightning where I was lucky enough to win Nomads Cup with a good U10 boys team. After 1 year there I got recruited by Del mar sharks and had 6 great years coaching both boys and girls teams. The whole club achieved some really good success and was there that i met Jose and Adrian. Our younger program there was very strong and we won a lot of leagues and tournaments. From there I went to SD Surf where I stayed for 13 years coaching on the boys program and had the fortune of coaching some very successful teams. Highlights being winning Nomads, Surf Cups, State Cups, League titles and coming from England getting to take the u15 boys to Manchester United Premier Cup that was played at United's training ground along with Paul and Nico. A great experience made better with the presence of Sir Alex Ferguson watching the games. Two years ago I was lucky again to be asked to coach with Arsenal that has now become SD Force where we will be working on building the club up to compete at higher levels. My philosophy has not changed since the first year coaching, my teams will always try and play the right way. Playing out of the back and getting my teams to play attractive soccer with high energy. The last 2 years have been great and I always look forward to a new season watching the boys develop.

RECOVERY COMMUNITY PROFILE
Character Building Through Community New Life House Offers Addiction Treatment Aimed at Long-Term Success by LIZ ONUFER | photos provided by New Life House A G E - S P E C I F I C
RECOVERY COMMUNITY
AT-A-GLANCE Name of Business: New Life House COO: David Saruk Years with the Company: 8 Year of Establishment: 1985 Address: 17252 Hawthorne Blvd Suite 289 Torrance, CA 90504 Website: www.newlifehouse.com Email: info@newlifehouse.com Phone: 888-357-7577 Description of Business: New Life House is an age-specific, longterm structured aftercare facility designed to teach life skills and provide the community necessary for someone to overcome addiction and establish a new life.
L
ife-saving,” parents will attest to their experience with New Life House. These are powerful words for a program that has been providing just that for the last 30 years. Founded in 1985, New Life House is the lifeline for young adults to overcome addiction and stay sober for the long-term. The founder of New Life House was inspired to start the program after experiencing addiction treatment. He saw the need for a program to serve as the missing link between short and long-term recovery. In fact, every staff member has experienced the program first-hand, offering insight into what residents may be experiencing. “The program has an unprecedented ability to hone in on the life struggles specific to 18- to 35-year-olds, and allows them to have a community around them in the same age range that can help out with direct experience,” explained David Saruk, Chief Operating Officer. Community is a cornerstone of the program. Family members are integrated throughout the recovery process, and residents build lifelong relationships. The active alumni program is proof of these bonds. “Our goal is to remain successful long after graduation, so we provide a resource for all our alumni to tap into anytime they need assistance,” David said.
The commitment to long-term sobriety sets New Life House apart from other treatment programs. “Trust people that have experience, and realize that recovery is a process that can’t be completed inside of a few months.” The average stay at New Life House is 13 months. Although people struggling with addiction “will be looking to manipulate the situation any way they can to avoid doing the rigorous internal work required to live a good life in recovery,” David acknowledged. This is a tough position for loved ones who are trying to make the best decision. “Building a foundation in recovery takes ample time, and it’s not something that can be accomplished inside of 30 days.” That foundation at New Life House is based on teaching vital life skills alongside treating the character of each resident, including the importance of a strong work ethic, living honestly, benefits of community, and essential coping skills for sobriety. “New Life House understands that abstinence is a vital stepping stone to true development of an individual,” David shared, “and our hands-on approach focuses on giving our residents the platform to become the best person they can be.”
“THE PROGRAM HAS AN UNPRECEDENTED ABILITY TO HONE IN ON THE LIFE STRUGGLES SPECIFIC TO 18- TO 35-YEAR-OLDS.” 18 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

Kendra Couch Classic
2018 Soroptimist High Tea
Mt. Carmel High School’s (MCHS) Kendra Couch Classic brought together eight baseball teams from local high schools – Torrey Pines, Canyon Crest Academy, Scripps Ranch, Santa Fe Christian, La Jolla Country Day, Bishop’s, and Clairemont – to raise awareness and money for cancer research this past spring. Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy played in the final championship game, with Torrey Pines ultimately emerging as the champions. Since 2012, MCHS has hosted a “Cancer Game” against another local high school for the same purpose, with this year being the first as a tournament. Players from all eight teams wore jerseys with the names of people who have been affected by cancer and, after the tournament, the jerseys and other items were auctioned off. A total of $24,000 was raised this year – almost doubling the amount raised in the first six years. All proceeds were donated to the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. Learn more about the tournament at www.kendracouchclassic.com.
The North County community came together for a vital cause at the 2018 Soroptimist High Tea. The annual event is a joint effort presented by Soroptimist International Poway and Soroptimist International North San Diego. This year’s sellout High Tea drew approximately 425 guests in their best hats to the Fairmont Grand Del Mar for an afternoon of socializing, auctions, and a high-fashion runway show. Television personality Leonard Simpson presented the fashion show, and CBS8 news anchor Carlo Cecchetto served as master of ceremonies. The event grossed over $100,000 to support the clubs’ Transitional Housing Program, which provides safe housing for survivors of domestic violence and their children. Park Village Elementary Recognized 92129’s Park Village Elementary School, along with Monterey Ridge Elementary School and Willow Grove Elementary School in 92127, were recently honored by the California Department of Education’s Distinguished Schools Program. This program replaces the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program after a three-year hiatus, and 287 schools were recognized statewide this year. Schools were assessed for excellence in teaching, learning, collaborating, and gains in academics and performance standards. “I am extremely proud of the success of our schools in implementing their best and innovative practices for the benefit of our students,” said Poway Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps. “From STEM and literacy to the arts and Character Counts, it really is a team effort by staff, students, and our community to create the foundation for college and career readiness.” Park Village Principal Mike Mosgrove, Monterey Ridge Principal Sal Embry, and Willow Grove Principal Amy Huff were honored at an awards ceremony in Anaheim in May.
Local Students Named National Merit Scholars
I Love A Clean San Diego’s (ILACSD) 16th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup drew approximately 6,000 volunteers to 113 cleanup sites around San Diego County in late April. Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve was among the cleanup sites this year. During the three-hour cleanup, volunteers across the county removed more than 175,000 pounds of trash and debris, helping to enhance the overall health and beauty of San Diego’s natural environment. Volunteers participated in beautification projects such as painting park structures, planting native trees and plants, mulching, and weeding. Participants also showcased their zero waste commitments this year in the “Rocking Reusables” Sony Photo Contest. Creek to Bay is one of two annual county-wide cleanups and hundreds of specific local cleanups hosted by ILACSD each year. Learn more at www.ilacsd.org.
Six Poway Unified School District (PUSD) students were recently awarded 2018 National Merit Scholarships by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Winners included Westview High School students Allison Bao, Steven Chen, Andre Yin, and Kevin Yu, and Rancho Bernardo High School students Samuel Hunter and Robert Ozturk. They are among 29 Merit Scholars throughout San Diego County and 2,500 Merit Scholars nationwide, chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists. The winners were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, and were judged based on their academic record, test scores, activities, leadership, and personal essay, as well as information about the school’s curricula, grading system, and written recommendation. Merit Scholars each received a $2,500 scholarship, which they can use at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university. For more information go to www.nationalmerit.org.

REALTOR® | BROKER
David J. Suder, Suder Realty Dr. David J. Suder began his career in optometry, and now he’s dedicated to helping sellers and buyers see success in real estate too. He partners with his wife, Darla Suder, to personally handle every transaction and offer full-service brokerage services. They list homes for only one percent, saving clients about $15,000 to $30,000. David’s interest in the field started in the early ‘80s when he was completing his clinical externship in the Los Angeles area. He started attending investment classes and seminars, and eventually purchased his first investment property in 1994. David and Darla have amassed a portfolio of nearly 170 residential rental units. David became a licensed broker in 2006, and also holds broker designation in two other states. Darla was licensed as a sales associate in 2004, and they formed Suder Realty, Inc. in 2007. “We found our experience and expertise could guide and assist people through a fairly stressful and scary ordeal,” said David. “We found it was truly personally fulfilling to be able to do that.” They use their investment expertise to help San Diegans buy and sell homes, offering them the unique opportunity to have a professional real estate investor assist them when negotiating the sale or purchase of a property. David is especially clever and capable at smoothing out the bumps along the way that buyers and sellers need to overcome. David and Darla spend most of their time engaged in managing, selling, acquiring investment properties, and consulting and helping home sellers and buyers. Sellers are advised on exactly what to do to get the highest price. Buyers are advised on what houses to avoid and exactly what they are getting, because David has actively done flips and rehabs himself and can spot problems up front. He even has personally performed most of the construction on many of his projects, and employed and supervised contractors. With this experience, David and Darla can advise sellers how to prepare their homes to get top dollar, and buyers on what to avoid or what they should require to be repaired in the home they are purchasing. David and Darla have been married since 1986, and have two adult children. They currently reside in Scripps Ranch, and have lived in north Poway, Rancho Peñasquitos, and Clairemont.

Chad Basinger
Windermere Homes & Estates Chad is a native San Diegan, raised in Rancho Bernardo and educated in the Poway Unified School District. He graduated in the top one percent of his high school class. Chad’s desire to excel led to graduating in just over three years with high honors from the University of Califonia at Santa Barbara. In addition to holding his real estate license since 2007, Chad has his CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and CFP (Certified Financial Planner) licenses. Chad has been honored by the San Diego Association of Realtors, earning the Circle of Excellence Award in 2016 and 2017, which is given to the top five percent of agents in all of San Diego County.
Nothing speaks louder than the voice of the consumer… “Chad has helped us sell two homes within the past three years (2014 and 2017). Both times, we sold the homes within the first week and were very pleased with the sale price both times. (He has also helped us buy our most recent home, which proceeded very smoothly). Chad’s greatest virtues are (1) his in-depth knowledge of the house buying/selling process and the markets, (2) his communication skills and pleasant disposition, and (3) his exceptional work ethic. As a result of these attributes, Chad makes the buying/selling process extremely painless and easy. He assembles all of the paperwork and explains, in very plain language, everything that you need to know to understand what’s happening. He provides very insightful advice on every aspect of the transaction, but his low-pressure approach gives us the freedom to ultimately make our own decisions. And we never once found ourselves waiting on Chad to complete a task to move the buying/selling process along; to the contrary, Chad was always one step ahead and, if anything, he had to wait on my wife and I to sign the documents he’d prepared for us! I literally cannot imagine a real estate agent providing a smoother selling/ buying experience than what we’ve experienced with Chad. I have recommended Chad to all my friends and family looking for a real estate agent in San Diego County, and I will continue to do so in the future without hesitation.” – Ben and Alicia S. “We can’t say enough good things about Chad. He was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and honest. He made us feel like we were the only people he was working with. If we had a question, he had an answer...and he always got back to us quickly. He helped us sell our home and find a new home quickly. We were able to move out of the old home and right into the new one without a problem. The whole process of buying/selling a home can be stressful, so we felt very lucky to find Chad.” – Nick and Meghan C. “Chad was great to work with through this process. It had been many years since we were in need of a Realtor and my how things have changed! Chad’s expertise in other disciplines was a real compliment to his profession as a Realtor. His calm demeanor provided assurance throughout the transaction and allowed us to stay focused on the positive end result!! I would have no qualms in recommending him as your Realtor.” – John and Theresa C. “Chad is knowledgeable, patient, and genuine. After working with high-pressure agents that didn’t listen well, Chad was a breath of fresh air. He truly understood what we were looking for. And he helped us get the perfect place for our family. We love Chad!” – Jacqueline and Angie T. “We liked Chad’s style from the minute we met him. We just wanted someone honest; that was our number-one criteria. It’s sometimes a tough thing to judge in a person, but we went with him and are so happy we did. He helped us navigate the new-to-us world of California real estate and managed to get us into a wonderful home. He was especially good at the negotiations and gave us what turned out to be very good advice on what offers to put in. We would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to buy or sell a house.” – Todd and Laura W. 26 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

“Charlotte is super friendly, smart, punctual, generous, and most importantly she knows what she’s doing. Her real estate knowledge is great and her amazing people skills cannot be matched. She was recommended to us by a former neighbor and from the moment we met her, we felt like we had known each other for a while. She first helped us buy a beautiful new home in a highly competitive seller market. Besides getting our offer accepted, she also navigated the rough waters of escrow with confidence and kept us calm each time we were in panic mode. After we moved into our new home, she helped us sell our old home above asking price and at the highest price in our neighborhood to date. She held open houses, staged our home beautifully, picked up a tab for cleaning and some repairs after the inspection, and kept us informed throughout the process. Professional all the way through and a great human being too! We are so happy with both transactions and as buyers and sellers, we highly recommend Charlotte!” – Jurate & Salil

SCHOOL PROFILE
Quality, Curiosity, Community
Peñasquitos Christian Preschool Offers Developmentally Appropriate Early Childhood Education by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
P
eñasquitos Christian Preschool (PCP) has long been a fixture in the community. Established in 1985 by Peñasquitos Lutheran Church as an outreach ministry to the families and children of the community, PCP has continued to thrive and remains well-known for its outstanding early childhood education programs. The school is proud to have been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) since 1987 and maintains that accreditation today. NAEYC’s accreditation system sets professional standards of quality for early childhood education programs and helps families identify high-quality programs for their young children. PCP offers a variety of developmentally appropriate programs for children of diverse backgrounds ranging in age from 18 months to five years old, which focus on play-based, child-centered learning. “We see each child as a unique individual entitled to discover God’s world at his or her own developmental level,” said Preschool Director Andrea Petsche. “We emphasize active learning, which takes advantage of children’s natural motivations, abilities, and interests. Our children are given endless opportunities to investigate, solve problems, discover relationships, and make comparisons.” Children have access to a dedicated STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) lab called the Nature Hut, an expansion of PCP’s Outdoor Classroom, where they are encouraged to explore and engage with the world. Children are also guided in their spiritual development through weekly chapel, where they sing, pray, and learn stories from the Bible. Afternoon enrichment classes are available for certain age groups, and the preschool calendar is filled with fun special days throughout the school year, such as Wacky Days, Farm Days, Stone Soup Feast, and Transportation Derby. At the core of its child-centered philosophy, PCP has small class sizes – between 12 to 20 students – and low teacher-student ratios – between 1:6 and 1:10. There are two fully qualified teachers in every classroom, as well as a specialized teacher for the Nature Hut two days per week. “We are inspired by the blessing and gift that children bring to our lives as they discover who God created them to be,” Andrea shared. “We relish and are motivated by their love, passion, and curiosity.” 30 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

WESTVIEW STUDENTS NAMED NCSFA SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
T
wo Westview High School seniors, Haier (Heather) Yang and Cynthia (Cindy) Qiao, were awarded 2018 North County Society of Fine Arts (NCSFA) scholarships. They were chosen from nine applicants from five local high schools. Heather’s goal is to become an art professor and teach in one of the top art and design schools. She will attend Pratt Institute in New York in the fall. Cindy’s career goal and lifetime ambition is to become a freelance artist and designer. She will be attending the Rhode Island School of Design. Both Heather and Cindy demonstrated to the scholarship committee a passion for art and an element of social awareness for the current times as expressed through their artwork. In addition to their scholarships, both winners received a one-day art exhibit at the Rancho Bernardo Library. NCSFA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the appreciation and education of fine art in the community. NCSFA offers demonstrations and critiques by accomplished artists every year, as well as informal critiques, paint-outs, juried shows, member exhibits, workshops, and art field trips. Each year since 1996, NCSFA awards scholarships to deserving Poway Unified School District graduating high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in fine art as they continue their education. TALENT IN TRAINING Studio West Offers Music Production Camps for Young Musicians
S
tudio West has been San Diego’s premier recording studio for over 40 years, but recently some new clients have been working there. In 2015, owner Peter Dyson started a series of week-long music production camps for middle and high school students, largely due to his own children’s musical journey. “My daughter plays the harp and my son is a drummer. They both had amazing teachers and great experiences performing with various ensembles, but a recording studio is a different environment that helps musicians grow.” The week-long camps involve instruction in songwriting, production and performance. Many students have a background in music theory and traditional instruments, but it’s not a requirement. “A laptop is now a musical instrument, just like a piano or guitar, but to play it requires the same instruction, discipline, and hard work that’s required for more traditional instruments,” said Dyson.
Performing in a studio is intimidating, but students rise to the occasion. As the lead instructor, San Diego songwriter, performer, and father of two multi-instrumentalist preteen boys Shawn Rohlf explains it, “I’m amazed at the musicianship and work ethic of the kids. If they are this good now, where will they be in 10 years?” At the end of the week, parents and students listen to the songs that students have written and produced over the week. The experience leaves many ready for more. As student Chrysta Hlavacek (17) puts it, “Making music with talented artists is my dream job, and going to Studio West helps me get there.”

Summer Fun Returns at the San Diego County Fair by LAINEY KRAL photos ©agezinder/123RF.COM
O
ne of San Diego's most beloved traditions has returned. The San Diego County Fair – whose theme this year is How Sweet It Is! – was first established in 1880 and arrived at its current home, the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in 1936. The fair has undergone a number of name changes over the past 138 years, and though the name was changed back to the original San Diego County Fair in 2002, many locals still know it as the Del Mar Fair. The fair offers a wide range of attractions and events, from famously adventurous fair food to dizzying carnival rides. Community members of all ages have the opportunity to showcase their talents as well, with competitions and exhibitions for collections, crafts, wine and beer, fine art, fashion, floral design, and of course, livestock of all shapes and sizes. Summer concerts are another popular draw, and this year includes a variety of artists from Little Big Town to Kansas and more. The fair will run June 1 through July 4, and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in June. Hours vary from day to day, so check times and find out about more special events at www.sdfair.com.

BEAT THE HEAT!
PLAN FOR PARKING!
Check the weather ahead of time and dress in comfortable clothes for walking. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are a good idea for sunny days, and bring a water bottle if you're staying all day.
Onsite parking is available, as well as free offsite parking with shuttle service to the fair. Due to crowds and traffic, getting there can be hectic – be sure to leave with plenty of time to get to any special events you’re looking forward to.

BMMS TEAM SUCCEEDS IN WORLDWIDE COMPETITION
B
lack Mountain Middle School’s Odyssey of the Mind team brought home third place in the World Finals at Iowa State University in May after taking first place in both the regional and state competitions earlier this year. The team of seventh and eighth grade girls, which included Sydney Hubbard, Brianna Vargas, Casey Good, Annabelle ReyesPangilinan, Bryanne Reyes-Pangilinan, Rumi Chadwick, and Katie Jacques, created a “mockumentary” that retold a scene from The Hobbit from the character’s point of view. They were given an extensive list of requirements for their performance and a budget of just $125. Over 850 teams competed in the World Finals, with 64 teams in BMMS’ problem
category and middle school division. The girls participated in an Olympics-style opening ceremony, stayed in the campus dorms, and met other students from all over the world. Founded in 1978, Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving program that challenges students to go beyond conventional thinking, allowing their knowledge and ideas to come to life in an exciting, productive environment. Past Odyssey challenges include things like designing mechanical dinosaurs, inventing new factory machinery, building working vehicles, writing a new chapter to Moby Dick, putting a twist on classic artwork, and much more. Students build self-confidence, develop life skills, create new friendships, and are able to recognize and explore their true potential. For more information go to www.odysseyofthemind.com.

Top Considerations For Buying A Home At Any Age TIPS FOR 20-SOMETHINGS by JEAN RILEY
Set yourself up for future financial flexibility. Take a hard look at your income and make a budget that allows you to pay down debt, cover your bills, and put money away in savings. Once you’ve paid off debts, putting away money for a down payment is the next essential step. But keep in mind that you’ll also want to have a financial cushion for unexpected costs such as repairs and maintenance. Stop the rent race. Once you’ve saved up at least $5,000 to $10,000, stop renting and buy your first house. With an FHA loan, you’ll only need to put down 3.5 percent and some conventional loans may allow for as little as five percent down. Bonus if you can find a home you love with a little equity built-in, such as a foreclosure or short sale.
Check your credit report. You may know your score, but when was the last time you looked at your credit report? You can obtain a free credit report each year at AnnualCreditReport.com. Look for any errors on your report, such as collection accounts and bad debts that belong to someone else. In some cases, credit agencies may mix credit files with another individual. Contact the credit bureau to report the discrepancy and request it be removed from your file. Get prequalified early. Prequalification is a simple first step you can take to find out approximately how big of a loan, and at what interest rate, you

might qualify for. Completing the application takes only a few minutes, no additional documents are required, and there are no fees or costs associated with prequalification. Make a long-term plan. While the home you buy in your 20s may not be the home you stay in for life, if you want to make a profit when you sell, choose a home you can see yourself living in for at least five years. Although you may not be able to have every feature you’d want in a home later in life, look for something that allows you and your life to grow and change a little. Keep an eye out for tips for other age groups in the next issue!
