It’s Boat Time

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux D IRE C TO R O F B U SIN E S S DE V E LO PME NT

I

’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch out and my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need Derrick Breaux a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or Publisher repair, Dave’s your man. He can be reached at 619-913-0420. Thanks for being a reader of 92129 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. A Bl a zing torch Tom Clements Shares His Passion for Helping Children and Families in Honduras by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

O

ne day, Tom Clements found himself sitting in the park, wondering about his purpose in life. “I started to write down how I wanted to live the rest of my life,” recalled Tom. “I wrote the following, which has become my personal mission: to continuously teach, lead, and grow as a family member, in my community, and as a business professional so that when the day is done, I will be able to pass a ‘blazing torch.’” That revelation took place 30 years ago. Today, Tom is living up to his life’s mission. A retired executive, Tom makes it a priority to spend quality time with his family: wife of 43 years Nancy, son Josh, daughter-inlaw Hannah, and three grandchildren. Tom is also passionate about giving back to his community, and is a member of the mission leadership group at Peñasquitos Lutheran Church, where he has been an usher for 25 years and has taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School. But it was five years ago that Tom was given the opportunity to give back to children in a big way. He began volunteering for Coffee4Kids-Honduras (C4K-Honduras), a nonprofit organization that raises money by selling fair-trade Honduran coffee to provide children and families in Honduras with basic necessities such as, food, medicine, water, and medical supplies. “A friend of mine suggested to me I should get involved in this mission because of my passion to help people, especially children,” explained Tom. So, at age 59, Tom went on his first mission to San Pedro Sula, Honduras. “This was life-changing,” he described. “You drive up to a hospital and see a store outside the hospital selling baby coffins. Then you go into the public hospital, into the children’s ward, where you

find out there is no medicine and four to seven children die a week in the hospital.” After the trip, Tom returned with a fierce passion to help save the very sick children of Honduras. He wasted no time in taking action. He and Nancy host an annual BBQ for friends and family, where most guests provide donations to C4K-Honduras. “This past year we had 125 attend!” Tom exclaimed. He also makes his own BBQ sauces and rubs to contribute to the cause – his latest recipe: Coffee4KidsHonduras Coffee Rub. “Several businesses are now selling the Honduran coffee and coffee rub to their customers with 100 percent of the proceeds going to C4K-Honduras,” noted Tom. He is also doing his part to share the story of C4K-Honduras. “About two years ago, I was told about how children in Honduras are dying from dehydration and illness as a result of drinking contaminated water,” shared Tom. “I came up with a re-hydration tool that is simple and very cost effective. A Girl Scout troop in PQ just made 1,400 of these devices for 400 families this year!” Another time, when Tom was talking to a group about the nonprofit’s plan to build a feeding station to prevent seriously malnourished children from dying, a gentleman in the group asked how much it would cost to start providing food for the station. “I said in the beginning it would be approximately $5,000 per year,” recalled Tom. “The man responded by saying, ‘Put me down for $5,000 per year till I die.’” Tom continues to spread the word in hopes that others will be inspired to get involved. “I talk to everyone I come in contact with about Coffee4Kids-Honduras,” added Tom. “My motto is: ‘You can make a difference in a child’s life.’” 

F

ifth grader Katie Ditter is a born performer who is thriving at JCompany Youth Theatre. At JCompany, Katie has performed in Willy Wonka, Wicked, Once on This Island, Annie Warbucks, Mary Poppins, Annie, Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz, and Ragtime. She has also played an orphan in Annie at Oceanside’s Star Theatre, performed in musical cabarets with Sapphire Theatre Company and Breakthrough Workshop Theatre, and was featured in a Les Misérables concert with Blue Rose Theater Project. “I have been acting and dancing since preschool. I really enjoy singing too, and I perform mostly in musical theater productions," Kate shared. “It’s great to do what I love with good friends. My theater group is like a second family to me. I am also inspired when I work with really talented people – I want to perform at that level too.”

Off the stage, Katie is actively involved in student government at Park Village Elementary School, serving as president. “I hope I am selected for ASB leadership when I go to Mesa Verde Middle School next year so that I can continue my involvement in student government. I also really enjoy organizing community service projects with friends,” stated Katie. When it comes to academics, this Student Star is partial to science, citing it as a subject that truly holds her interest and her love for detail. Katie finds time in between school and performances to play soccer and basketball, as well as take dance classes and sing in the temple choir at Congregation Beth Israel. “I have played soccer since I was five years old, and I am now the goalkeeper for my San Diego Soccer Club team. My dad played soccer in high school, and before I joined the club, he was my coach,” related Katie, who also revealed that she wishes she had more time to play basketball year-round. “I play point guard with Rancho Peñasquitos Recreation League. We even have a basketball hoop in my backyard and my family loves playing on the weekends,” said Katie. This talented student is already thinking about the future and hopes to attend UCLA. While she has plenty of time to narrow down her choices, Katie is leaning toward studying performing arts, education, computer engineering, or architecture. Regardless of her choice, it is clear that Katie has a bright future ahead of her, both on and off the stage. 

I

t is interesting to note that the Righthouse family – Bret, Susan, and 13-year-old daughter Sophia – are not only longtime residents of Rancho Peñasquitos but are longtime American residents too! Both sides actually descend from the Mayflower and possess deep historical ties to the United States military – family members have served in branches of the Army, Marines, and Air Force. Bret and Susan have continued their families’ legacies of serving the community and the country in many ways. They’ve been with San Diego Law Enforcement for 31 and 28 years, respectively, and

met each other through mutual friends during their time in training. In addition to serving the community through law enforcement, the family is passionate about volunteering with various organizations. Both parents have been PTA members for nine years, serving terms as PTA president for Park Village Elementary School. Bret is the unit commander for the Miramar Young Marines Program (MYMP) and “works tirelessly on leadership skills for today’s youth,” noted Susan. She is the executive officer for the MYMP, and has also led Girl Scout Troop #8716 since Sophia was in kindergarten. In addition, she serves as service unit manager for the Canyon Crest section of PQ Girl Scouts, managing 41 troops, 355 active Girl Scouts, and over 200 registered adult volunteers. Sophia also plays a big role in the community. She is a Young Marine Gunnery Sergeant in the MYMP, with leadership over 57 youth in her unit, and is interested in serving her country as an officer after attending either Annapolis Naval Academy or a University Navy/ Marine Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). Sophia also began a program called Valuing Our Veterans in which she raises money within the community to place 20-foot American flags and service flags in the yards of veterans (with no cost to the veterans). She is a ballet dancer and dances competitively in jazz, tap, and lyrical. The Righthouse family loves 92129 because of its close proximity to work and city activities. But when they’re not enjoying the San Diego lifestyle, they like riding dirt bikes and quads on Colorado trails and taking road trips to see historic landmarks. Wherever they roam, the Righthouse family is getting and giving the most out of life. 

YO U R N E I G H B O R ’ S R E C I P E

INGREDIENTS 3 bell peppers (any color), halved and seeded ½ yellow onion, diced 1-2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup white quinoa 1 cups water ½ cup tomato sauce 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup of Mexican cheese blend, shredded ¼-½ cup olive or melted coconut oil Lime juice, to taste Salt, pepper, chili powder, and paprika to taste Optional Add-Ins: Corn Cherry tomatoes, quartered Jalapeño, seeded and diced

Optional Garnishes: Cilantro Avocado Lime wedges

DIRECTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

6. 7. 8. 9.

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Rub each bell pepper half with ½-1 tablespoon of olive or coconut oil, coating inside and outside completely. Place peppers on a foil-lined baking sheet and set aside. Heat approximately 2 tablespoons of oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and sauté until onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add quinoa to the pan and stir once. Add water and tomato sauce. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Let simmer until quinoa is fully cooked. You can tell it’s done when you can see a small white ring around each grain and all liquid is absorbed. Add black beans, lime juice, spices, and any desired add-ins to taste and stir. While quinoa is cooking, bake bell peppers in the oven until they are a bit soft and oil is bubbling, 10 to 15 minutes. Sprinkle cheese into each bell pepper and spoon in quinoa mixture. Bake again for another 10 to 15 minutes. During the last 5 minutes of cooking, take the peppers out and sprinkle some more cheese on top of quinoa, then return to the oven. Take them out when the cheese on top is melted. Serve with another squeeze of lime juice and any desired garnishes. Enjoy!

This recipe is relatively quick, healthy, versatile, easy to make for a group of friends or family, and delicious! I like to add LOTS of lime juice to the quinoa mixture, which, by the way, is also great as a salad base, as a side with another entrée, or just on its own, served hot or cold. If you have any left over, that is. ABOUT THE CHEF: I am a proud San Diegan who can’t get enough of this city! I love to try new restaurants and wineries, walk on the beach on a sunny day, and even just drive along the coast with the windows down and Floyd as my passenger. 

COMMUNITY STUFF

11th Annual PQ Picnic

Eagle Scout Project Helps Kittens

The PQ-NE Action Group will host its 11th Annual Neighborhood Picnic at Rolling Hills Park on Saturday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The picnic will feature many family-friendly activities including bouncers, games, dunk tank, face painting, a visit from Fire Station 40, hamburgers and hot dogs, cotton candy, a silent auction, and a raffle with great prizes. A $6 donation per person is suggested. The PQ-NE Action Group is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting and preserving a safe and livable environment for the residents of The Glens and The Villages, located within the Rancho Peñasquitos community. The organization’s efforts are primarily directed at educating residents regarding traffic and safety issues that impact the area, and organizing community members to address these issues as they arise. For more information go to www.savepq.org.

Local Boy Scout Derek Chow recently completed a project for the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) as part of his Eagle Rank Leadership Project. With the help of family, friends, and fellow Scouts, Derek designed, cut, pinned, and sewed 15 kennel curtains for SDHS’s kitten nursery. The curtains cover all sides of the kennels, protecting the kittens from infectious diseases and making them feel comfortable and safe. “Derek did an outstanding job on his Eagle Project and showed exceptional commitment throughout,” said SDHS Educator Staci Hurley. “The curtains are an incredible asset to San Diego Humane Society’s kitten nursery, and will make a positive impact for many kitten seasons to come.” Derek joined Boy Scouts four years ago and quickly moved up the ranks. He is currently the Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 667, the highest position a Scout can hold in their troop. “Scouting has always been a very rewarding experience for me,” he said. “It’s taught me that I can make a difference in the world and lead others to do the same thing.”

MCHS Honored as Gold Ribbon School Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS) was one of four Poway Unified School District (PUSD) schools to be named a 2017 California Gold Ribbon School. The Gold Ribbon Awards, which are temporarily replacing the California Distinguished Schools Program, recognize schools that have made gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education, and also serve as examples of excellent teaching, learning, collaborating, and successful school climate efforts. The other PUSD schools to be honored were Del Norte High School, Rancho Bernardo High School, and Oak Valley Middle School. “These schools are an excellent example of PUSD’s mission of ensuring college and career readiness for all students,” said PUSD Superintendent Marian Kim-Phelps. “Through dedicated staff and innovative programs, they are creating 21st century learners, ready for future success.” MCHS Principal Greg Magno, along with the three other PUSD principals, were honored by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson at an awards ceremony on May 1. They will also be honored at the PUSD school board meeting in mid-May. Learn more at www.powayusd.com.

Town Council Awards Local Man Many Rancho Peñasquitos community members gathered at Hotel Karlan in April to recognize and honor Bill Diehl for over 40 years of contributions to 92129. Bill has been extremely active in the PQ community since 1975, witnessing its growth from infancy to the thriving community it is today. He has played a critical role in developing local parks, streets, and landscaping, serving on the Parks and Recreation Council, the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council, PQ VFW Post 11388, and the City of San Diego’s Peñasquitos East Maintenance Assessment District. He has also served our country as a former naval officer and reservist. Bill and his wife Loretta are relocating to Ohio to be closer to family, but Rancho Peñasquitos will not forget the many years of selfless service he gave to our community. 26 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2017

St. Michael’s Academic Decathlon Win

St. Michael’s School earned first place overall out of 21 schools at the 21st Annual San Diego Diocese Academic Junior High Decathlon Competition in March, qualifying them to compete in the State Academic Junior High Decathlon in Sacramento in April. “It was a joy for me to work with these students and to see them rewarded for their hard work and dedication to learning,” said Academic Decathlon Coach Malini Paye. “The best part was watching them build lasting friendships and learn important teamwork lessons through this experience.” In addition to qualifying for the state competition, the St. Michael’s team earned first place in the team logic competition and second place in the team super quiz competition. Six students also earned awards in their individual events: Stacy Widyono (first place in science), Hayden Jackson (first place in literature), Treasa Paul (third place in religion), Paola Simi (fourth place in social studies), Natasha Tavares (fourth place in writing), and Pierre Paye (fifth place in current events). Once in Sacramento, the team continued to succeed. They placed first in Super Quiz; Stacy Widyono again placed first in science; and eighth grader Jane Cox placed second in fine arts.

Sundance Elementary’s New STEAM Lab

Sundance Elementary School held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the official opening of its new science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) lab in March. Janet Hubka, CEO of Ilus Art, along with her husband Dr. Mark Hubka, presented artwork donated by BioMed Realty and two microscopes donated by Bio Surplus to Sundance Principal Bob Rodrigo and assembled students and teachers at the ceremony. Myrna Zambians, who represented Senator Toni Atkins, also presented a Certificate of Recognition for STEAM education. The lab will allow students to explore STEAM subjects with hands-on experiments and activities as well as “increase students’ higher level thinking and creativity specifically as it’s related to science and technology,” said Principal Rodrigo. Lab materials, which include more than a dozen microscopes, a 3D printer, and an oscilloscope, represent a hybrid between the free-form “maker labs” on some campuses and traditional labs on others. 2nd Annual How-To Festival at the Library The Rancho Peñasquitos Branch Library is hosting the 2nd Annual How-To Festival on Saturday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival will take place simultaneously at seven library locations throughout San Diego – PQ, Central, Clairement, Logan Heights, Mission Hills, Otay Mesa, and Pacific Beach – with each branch hosting a number of mini “how-to” classes. “I am most excited by the fact that this is an opportunity for people in our community to engage with each other,” said PQ Library Branch Manager Adrianne Peterson. “The festival celebrates experiential and peer-to-peer learning, and is a wonderful way for individuals to share and connect with their community.” There will be 15 “how-to” classes taking place during the four-hour program on three stages at the PQ Library, including: Make Your Own Spa Treats, Write Using Calligraphy Pens, Draw Pokémon GO Characters, Tie a Scarf in Six Different Ways, Make Homemade Dog Treats, Love Yourself, Grow Your Own Mini Urban Garden, among others.

7th Annual Memorial Golf Tournament The 7th Annual Terry Spencer Memorial Golf Tournament will take place at the Vineyard Golf Course on Sunday, June 25, with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start. The tournament honors late community member Terry Spencer, who passed away six years ago from lung cancer. The inaugural golf memorial was organized by a neighbor shortly after Terry’s passing, and it was so well-received that Terry’s wife Colleen and her children Summer and Alec continue to hold the tournament each year. All proceeds are donated to the American Lung Association. The tournament is a fitting tribute to Terry and his love of golf. The sport was frequently part of Spencer family vacations, and Terry and Alec could often be found at a local golf course on the weekends. The entire Spencer family has also been very involved in community sports and volunteering activities. For more information and to register for the tournament contact Colleen Spencer at 858-538-4148 or colleenspencer19@gmail.com.

PQ Students Read, Imagine, and Create Two Mesa Verde Middle School students were recognized for their artwork at the 2017 Read-Imagine-Create awards ceremony in April. In the annual program, participating students read works of Emily Dickinson’s, re-imagine images and themes from the literature, and create a project in an artistic medium that is meaningful to them. This year there were nearly 400 submissions in three categories from 14 San Diego middle and high schools. Mesa Verde’s Dan Lavigne won third place in the Visual Arts category for his mixed media sculpture based on Dickinson’s poem CXIII. Caitlin Hauw received a special recognition award for her pastel drawing with hidden elements only seen in black light, inspired by Dickinson’s poem LXII. Read-Imagine-Create is presented by Write Out Loud, an organization with a commitment to inspire, challenge, and entertain by reading short stories aloud for a live audience. PUSD Scores High on State Dashboard The California Department of Education recently released new evaluation rubrics and the California School Dashboard as a way to measure student performance and give a more comprehensive look at overall district and school performance. The rubrics, which will be rolled out gradually, analyze 10 indicators of student performance: graduation rates; English language arts and math; parent engagement; school climate; progress of English learners; college and career readiness; implementation of state standards; services, materials, and facilities; chronic absenteeism; and suspension rates. Poway Unified School District (PUSD) scored at the highest possible levels in several areas, including graduation rates and student performance in English language arts and math for third through eighth grade. PUSD also met the state target in reducing the number of students suspended during the year and in measuring how well English language learners are progressing. Full Dashboard results will be reported this fall. Learn more at www.caschooldashboard.org. May | June 2017 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • 27

Brian Reschke SD Properties Group

Brian Reschke is the broker for PQ Properties and has been an active agent since 2004. His experience owning a high listing-volume real estate office in Seattle from 2004 to 2007 allowed him to learn a variety of marketing strategies, but when he moved back to San Diego in 2007 he decided it was time to focus on his clients’ needs. Today PQ Properties specializes in providing service to people making transitions in life. One client, Chris D., took advantage of Brian’s free listing offer and moved to a larger home. Brian sold their home, and they moved out for zero listing commission, which saved them $16,000. Another client, Jennifer K., shared, “Because of Brian’s experience in remodeling work, he was able to help me repair over $10,000 worth of items that came up in my inspection report.” Brian and his team work with many first-time home buyers as well. He has brokered over 300 transactions valued over $120 million in 13 years. He has also managed over 30 property renovations, which helps him advise his clients on their remodel needs to maximize their home’s value. In addition, Brian’s mortgage loan originators license helps him prequalify buyers and clearly explain loan and closing documents. Brian said, “I treat all of my clients like I would treat my own family, by providing stress-free and knowledgeable experience.” Brian has lived in PQ for 33 years and is highly active in the community. He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School and San Diego State University, is currently serving on the RP Basketball League Board as president, Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council as treasurer, and also serves on the Rancho Peñasquitos Planning Board. Brian and his wife Alana have a daughter starting kindergarten this fall, and their son will be one year old.

hat began as a way to support her son’s education has turned into much more for PQ's Dana McPherson. Beginning her volunteer journey at Sunset Hills Elementary School, Dana now also shares her time and skills on the campus of Black Mountain Middle School, as well as with a number of environmental projects. Dana began volunteering at Sunset Hills in 2009, when her oldest son Tyler started kindergarten. “Once I started volunteering there, I realized what a loving and supportive community it was, and got hooked,” she explained. “While I started simply volunteering in the classroom, I soon began seeking out other ways to help.” Dana now serves as the head of the yearbook, the writer for the school's newsletter, and a room parent. Two years ago, when Tyler moved on up to Black Mountain Middle School, Dana also began volunteering there. She is the Science Olympiad photographer and works in the student store. Grateful for the opportunity to make a difference on local campuses, Dana encourages others to get involved, “whether it is in the classroom or doing support work for organizations such as the PTA or school foundations in the evening from home.” Using her creativity and photography skills, Dana has found a niche for herself in the schools. “My biggest accomplishment is the happiness I see and hear from the students when I take their photo for the yearbook,” she acknowledged. “I love that oftentimes, after I take their photo at a special event or spirit day, they will run off yelling, ‘Yes! I am going to be in the yearbook!’” Dana wishes students had the opportunity to express their enthusiasm and creativity more often during the school day. “I love the way their eyes and faces light up when they get to paint, build model volcanoes, or do a special STEM activity that combines science, creativity, and oftentimes art.” Dana’s service to her community does not end in the schools. “I grew up camping with my family and have always had a love for nature,” she said. Dana is currently working with the Yosemite Conservancy to document the before and after of the Conservancy’s projects for a future book. As a family, Dana and her husband Andy and children Tyler, Madison, and Camden, take “trash treks” around the neighborhood and local preserves and parks to pick up trash and recyclables. “I feel most relaxed and happy when I am with my family hiking, swimming at the beach, or kayaking and rafting on a lake or river.” 

ORTHODONTICS PROFILE

LIVE LIFE I-ORTHODONTICS AND DR. LINDSAY PFEFFER CREATE SMILES FROM THE INSIDE OUT by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo provided by I-Ortho

I

-Orthodontics is a unique practice that focuses not just on a patient’s teeth but their overall experience from the moment they walk through the front door. “I-Orthodontics is not just a business. It is a place of impact and a place where we focus on changing lives beyond just changing patients’ smiles. We want our patients to live life smiling,” revealed Dr. Lindsay Pfeffer, who worked with Dr. Noel Moser until her retirement in 2014. Formerly Moser Orthodontics, Dr. Pfeffer re-branded the office into what I-Orthodontics is today, while continuing the legacy of being a philanthropic and family-centered practice. “Our practice focuses on giving back to our community and helping those in need. We sponsor over 100 community organizations in the area and maintain our Boards for Braces campaign,” noted Dr. Pfeffer. “This program is for those who may not need orthodontics but who want to help improve the life of someone less fortunate. For every California longboard that is purchased, I treat one child in need for free.” With this program, Dr. Pfeffer strives to help develop a culture of buying with intent. This allows young patients to feel a connection between something they desire and how it can impact another’s life. In addition to cultivating a welcoming and giving environment, the members of the I-Ortho staff – each having many years of experience in orthodontics – strive to be the best they can be in their field by regularly receiving training from world-renowned orthodontic specialists. Dr. 42 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2017

Pfeffer herself was a scientist before earning her Doctorate in Dental Medicine from an Ivy League institution. Her scientific background has fostered a love for the technical and innovative side of the industry. With this in mind, she and her team take a proactive approach to orthodontics. “Today, teeth can be improved with retainers, braces, and more invisible options like Invisalign or lingual braces. With advances in technology, we are able to fix teeth faster and improve the look of patients’ smiles at any age,” Dr. Pfeffer explained. “For growing children, we are able to avoid pulling teeth and prevent problems that otherwise may be unsolvable in adulthood.” Patient education is also a key part of Dr. Pfeffer’s practice. She is committed to informing her patients of all their options and making sure they understand all aspects of their treatment. “Our focus is on making our patients happy. We also want people to be inspired by our office so that they can make someone else’s day by continuing that feeling they have when they leave our office. Kindness is contagious, and we want to serve as role models for our community,” related Dr. Pfeffer, who splits her own time between running her practice and volunteering for over 20 different organizations. With its many philanthropic endeavors and programs – like their Little Free Library offered to children, parents, and all who visit the office – the impact of I-Ortho’s efforts is felt throughout the community. For more information about their programs and services, or to set up an appointment, call 858-756-6878. 

estview High School students Ronak Shah and Nir Levin have dedicated themselves to sharing their technical knowledge by founding San Diego Code (SDC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching coding to people of all ages. “When I was in middle school, I had my own first exposure to programming and I immediately loved it,” said SDC Vice President Nir Levin. “I wanted to share that experience with other up-and-coming kids.” The goal of SDC is to promote an interest in computer programming to children in the early stages of their lives and to create accessible curriculum that anyone can follow. SDC hosts a number of workshops and events throughout the year, including their monthly two-hour open sessions where participants can work at their own pace to learn Python. During the summer, SDC

offers free coding camps for middle and high school students to learn the fundamentals of Java, an especially useful language for students planning on taking the AP Computer Science course. SDC also hosts Family Coding Night events in which the organization introduces students and their families to programming through fun games and activities. SDC currently has four active members and is looking to expand. “Anyone who has taken up an interest in computer science and/or reaching out to their community through online media and in person can be a part of this organization!” Nir said. Future goals also include working with local libraries and schools to host SDC workshops, as well as encouraging different sub-organizations at other area high schools to host their own community coding events. 

Is It Time to Sell Your Home?

JEAN RILEY

by JEAN RILEY

Professional Real Estate Consultant

T

here is a severe shortage of homes for sale in 92129, and there are plenty of qualified buyers seeking a home in your area! Statistics are in for March and we saw that only 54 new listings hit the market in 92129, a 30% decrease from the same time last year according to the Greater San Diego Association of REALTORS®. However, with the lower inventory of homes, we saw sales prices rise by roughly 15% year over year. Currently, there is less than one month of housing inventory available. So what does this all translate to as a homeowner in 92129? Maybe it’s time to sell and look at moving up or moving down. The appreciation of equity realized with your home sale could be rolled into the down payment of your new home, keeping your payment either similar or lower than your current payment.

If you are over the age of 55, are you aware of Prop 60 and 90? These props allow you to transfer the tax base on your current home to a new primary home, keeping your property taxes low. For more information on how this works, contact us to learn more. If you want to sell, we have plenty of buyers looking to buy a home – which will make your home-selling journey that much easier. 

AN AFTERNOON

BY THE SEA

Discover Seaport Village + The Headquarters This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

I

f your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a lazy stroll along cobblestone pathways winding in and out of view of the Big Bay, ice cream cone in hand, while drenched in the warm Southern California sunshine, there’s a good chance we know where your head is at: Seaport Village. This 14-acre waterfront stretch is home to over 45 diverse shops, 17 eateries, and regular entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, free outdoor concerts on Sundays, and an old-fashioned carousel – open 365 days a year. Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village! 
