It’s Not Just a Jeep!

I

’ve always loved the idea of buying an old Jeep and refurbishing it. Once, I even convinced my wife to ride with me to check out a few. After seeing them, she eventually talked some sense into me and made me realize a project of that caliber was not in our family’s best interest. Fast forward many years. Apparently, my son – soon to be getting his driver’s permit – inherited the Jeep bug. There’s no doubt that he would have preferred a brandnew Jeep, but once I let him know what new Jeeps cost, he quickly changed his mind. So, we developed a plan. We would find a used Jeep that we could refurbish together as a father-son project. The search became a near obsession. On a daily basis, my son would slide his phone in front of my face asking what about this one? For a variety of reasons, my answer was always the same – not that one. Then, about a year ago, he showed me a Jeep. It wasn’t pretty. At 29 years old, it had clearly lived a long and “fun” life. It had scrapes, dents, some rust, and a very rough interior. But it had something that caught our attention – a brand new engine and new tires! As a family, we drove down to take a look at it. I strategically requested that my wife test drive it, with our son in the passenger seat. That’s all it took! We became the proud owners of a 1989 Jeep Wrangler. My son and I slowly and meticulously began to refurbish it. We did as close to a frame-off restoration as our budget allowed. We spent many days and nights working on the Jeep. Our goal was to have every part of the Jeep that you can see look as it did when it was driven off the factory floor 30 years ago. Along the journey, my son and I spent a lot of quality time together. We laughed. We got our hands dirty. We banged up our knuckles, figured out ways to remove and replace parts that didn’t want to be removed, and definitely shared moments of frustration. And yes, there was lots of physical exhaustion and sweat! There’s no longer a tool in my toolbox that I wouldn’t trust my son to use. This project allowed my son and me to bond beyond the normal busy lives that we all know. We took turns listening to each other’s music playlist. We talked about things that would typically require a “scheduled” conversation. We worked together on a common goal, without immediate gratification. I am so thankful for the opportunity this Jeep gave us. While the obvious outcome is a 1989 Jeep Wrangler that looks better today than it did 30 years ago, it’s not just a Jeep. It’s memories. It’s pride. It’s driving something down the road that you worked on with your own hands. We will remember and talk about this project for the rest of our lives. Learning Problems Don’t Have to be Permanent There are Real and Lasting Solutions

Having a learning challenge can be compared to doing a job at the top of a ladder, whose lower rungs are unstable. Working in this way makes the job harder, and take longer to complete. By strengthening the lower rungs, or underlying skills, learning challenges can be eliminated, and work done at the top of the ladder can improve, with increased attention, focus, confidence and success!

After working with TLC, our daughter does all her homework without prompting, needs very little help, and her grades are all A’s and B+. She seems happy and confident. Her work with TLC has been invaluable, and we are very thankful!” -TLC parent

“All of the staff is amazing-- caring, patient, & positive. My son's clinician challenged him without pushing him to frustration. A worthwhile investment in my child's future!” -TLC parent “TLC is nothing short of a miracle. I will admit I was initially hesitant. It is not cheap, and the promises of academic progress seem too good to be true. However, I am not being dramatic when I say it was worth every penny and it changed my son's academic life forever.” - TLC parent

Zoë Salinas Is a World Champion Golfer

Zoë Salinas (10) Sycamore Ridge 5 Chad and Myra Brother – Kai (12) Bay Club

ho knew that sibling rivalry could result in such a success story? Back when she was just a little girl, Zoë Salinas felt a strong pang of jealously when her older brother, Kai, placed ninth in the world for golfing. Wanting to prove that she could also master the sport, Zoë managed to not only win the California State Championship twice, at ages five and seven, but she also became a runner-up at the IMG World Championship at age six, and eventually won the FCG Callaway World Championship at age eight! Now that she is a 10-year-old fifth grader

at Sycamore Ridge Elementary, Zoë laughed about Kai being the impetus for her golf glory. She admitted, “My brother basically inspired me to play golf because I’ve always wanted to be better than him!” Zoë claimed that she first began playing golf “ever since I could walk,” and became entrenched in golf tournaments by age four. Zoë’s long-term goal is to hopefully attend Stanford University and play on the college golf team. Discussing the appeal of her favorite activity, Zoë proclaimed, “In golf, it doesn’t matter if you are bigger or smaller than someone else, because everyone has an equal chance to compete.” Zoë also learned a valuable mental skill while competing on the green. She revealed, “The most challenging part of golf is staying focused after you hit a bad shot. You just have to let go of the past and focus on the shot in front of you.” Utilizing her newfound self-control has

10 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • October | November 2019

also resulted in Zoë making strides in her school’s math club. Zoë stated, “My favorite subject is math, probably because my dad is a computer scientist and he taught me the basics at an early age. My mom and dad actually met in a calculus class at Columbia University, so I feel a family connection with math!” When she isn’t working on golf or math, Zoë can be found participating in tennis tournaments, playing the piano, doodling, and enjoying the monkey bars at her school. Zoë also continues to practice her proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, which her father taught her and her brother to speak, read, and write. Zoë has proven that she is able to swing her way to a fantastic future. 

all has arrived on the Rancho, and many of us are preparing for the annual Oktoberfest, Halloween celebrations, and Thanksgiving trips. The Town Council is busy working on the selections of craft beer to present at our 2nd Annual Oktoberfest Craft Beer Garden/Fundraiser benefiting the July 2020 Fireworks show. We are enjoying the ever so slight coolness in the air and the opportunities to come together during the fall season. We have a great lineup of guest speakers for October and November in step with the community interest in safe evacuation plans for a few of our neighborhoods with limited road access and how to navigate the insurance needs should you have to file a claim. Did you know your driveway may not be covered under your current homeowners insurance plan? Community Events, Grants, & Sponsorships: The 25th Anniversary Fiesta Committee will hold its next meeting Oct. 15 at Fresco’s, 7 p.m. Everyone loves the annual Fiesta, but did you know it’s put on by volunteers? Everyone in PQ is welcome to attend and contribute to this year’s Silver Anniversary event. Contests: Currently, students in grades K-12 reflect on “Growing up PQ.” This essay contest is in full partnership with 92129 Magazine! This year’s deadline is Nov. 15, so read more in this issue! Volunteer Awards: We love to recognize the community service of our residents during the Fiesta de los Peñasquitos in May. These annual awards honor one adult, one business, and a student from each of our public schools for their community service efforts in PQ. These programs are funded through donations by residents, businesses, and community partners, and the Annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos. Attend a meeting or visit our website to learn more! 

A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // COACH ASHLey ashley breaux / San Diego Force

Soccer has been a part of my life since I was very young, and I knew it would follow me no matter where life takes me. I have played competitively since elementary school, was on my high school varsity team for four years, played in college, and continue to play to this day. The passion I have for this game has never faltered and being an influence on young minds as a coach has only strengthened that passion. I appreciate the close-knit family that Force FC provides its players and coaches alike. All the coaches are willing to help each other out, and players are motivated to learn in a supportive and progressive environment. I strive for my players to be the best they can be and to always provide them with constructive criticism and encouragement. I love watching them grow! I also coach the junior varsity team at Del Norte High School, which allows me the unique opportunity to work with many of the same players year-round. I recently graduated from CSU San Marcos with a biology degree. I’m currently working on my master’s in supply chain management, then plan on going to dental school. In my free time I like to go rock crawling in Big Bear, ride quads in the desert, and spend time with family and friends. You may see me around the local fields supporting my brother and sister, who are following in my footsteps. We are a soccer-loving family!

mbarking on a new career can be a daunting task, especially when it involves diving into a high-energy, high-profile one such as audio engineering. But switching up careers later in life is something that seemed like a “no-brainer” to several audio enthusiasts after taking part in the Electronic Production Package (EPP) at Studio West. Like their fellow classmates, these students initially enrolled in the EPP program as a fun way to expand their skills in what seemed like an after-work hobby. However, once involved in the program, what started as a hobby soon began looking more like a viable career option. “Oftentimes we see some of the more casual enthusiasts enter the program with the idea that this is for fun or good for a side business. But once they start working with our instructors, getting hands-on engineering experience in a working recording studio, we see a shift in focus. Folks with a regular 9-to5 job they aren’t 100% invested in realize that their passion can be turned into a viable

career,” explained Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admissions for The Recording Arts Center (TRAC) at Studio West. Todd explained further, “When the class is over, the next logical step to launch a career in the industry is to acquire more experience and get the in-depth training that can lead to a successful career in audio engineering. Many find this in our year-long Diploma program.” One student, Isaiah, finished the EPP program last month and immediately enrolled in the Diploma Program. His classes began on Monday, and he couldn’t be more thrilled about his choice. “It was so much fun working a real recording studio. I’m really excited about my decision to start the full program!” Don’t miss out on a new career opportunity in audio engineering – try out The Recording Art Center’s Electronic Production Package now. Classes are enrolling now, so check out the full schedule at www.studiowest.com or call 858-592-9497.

Now retired in San Diego, Danny continues to serve his community through the Veterans of Foreign Wars Poway Post 7907. He has worked to reduce homelessness and suicide rates among veterans, increase employment opportunities for exiting active duty military, support deported veterans and military families, and foster civic engagement in the electoral process. “Danny Jackson courageously served our nation and is a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “I am truly grateful for his patriotic dedication to our country and its people.” Danny lives in Rancho Peñasquitos with his wife Eva. Destination Imagination (DI) develops critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills through DI “Challenges,” published in September. Teams collaborate for several months to develop unique challenge solutions, which are then showcased at a regional competition. A team of local students chose to simultaneously solve the Scientific and Fine Arts challenges this year. This team advanced to DI Global Finals in Kansas City, MO, and won first place in both challenge categories. They were also honored with a special award for exceptional engineering in their solution. 17,000 people attended the Global Finals competition, with teams from 48 states and 15 countries around the world. This local team developed an eight-minute play that depicted the four stages of gambling addiction. Their solution included a casino set that gradually transformed from colorful to black and white, a functional electro-mechanical slot machine, and a large animated face and brain that illustrated the medical effects of addiction. The team built these props using electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and a lot of creativity. Learn more at www.caldi.org.

THE GRAUER SCHOOL

S

ituated on a six-acre natural paradise in Encinitas, alive with native plants and animals and a light coastal breeze, The Grauer School campus itself serves as the starting point for its expeditionary learning tradition. Students are encouraged to use the school campus and the world around them, from the nearby San Elijo Lagoon to Kenya, as primary resources for generating curiosity and experiencing authentic learning. Founded in 1991, Grauer focuses on helping students develop their unique voice, discover their passions, and take ownership over their own learning. The school’s founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer, noted, “We have traveled far and wide studying the world’s most inspirational schools and educational movements: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Socratic, free and democratic schooling, expeditionary learning and classical education, from one-room schoolhouses to Peking University. These traditions have provided us with heroes, mentors, and wisdom.” “The Grauer School uses the foundations of these great traditions and movements to infuse all we keep learning and synthesizing,” said Grauer Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs. “The result is a campus of purpose, optimism, and inspiration. We commit to continuing to develop the finest, most engaged, humanitarian independent

school in the world. And even though our focus is not on rankings and test scores, our students are succeeding at their top choice colleges.” Engaging students in six core values – resourcefulness, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, self-advocacy, and accountability – The Grauer School aims to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. The learning curriculum involves field trips, community service activities, art, expeditions, and student-created programs. Grauer is also the region’s only UNESCO affiliate school, with 176 partner schools around the world. Grauer’s expeditionary learning and arts programs are across the curriculum. The school also launched its Environmental Stewardship Pledge this year, dedicating the 2019-2020 school year to promoting ecological sustainability and stewardship in the school community and beyond. The resolution impacts every aspect of the school, from in- and out-ofclass curriculum to school culture and finance. “We know our students are not inheriting the world or climate we inherited,” said Grauer. “We have a moral imperative to prepare them courageously.” As the longest-serving independent school in North County San Diego, The Grauer School fosters nurturing relationships between teachers and students, giving learners 99th percentile levels of connection and engagement so that they are empowered in their education. “In a world that often seems to put standards before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student,” said Abplanalp-Diggs. “Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions, and teens coming of age are finding their unique voices at Grauer.” 

DEL MAR PINES SCHOOL

F

rom the border to Oceanside, The Bishop’s School brings together a diverse and thriving student and faculty population. The School was founded in 1909 as a girls’ boarding school when sisters Ellen Browning Scripps and Eliza Virginia Scripps joined Bishop Joseph Horsfall Johnson to create an institution committed to an ideal that still holds true today: School should be an “open door to knowledge.” In 1971, the School merged with the San Miguel School for Boys. Today, Bishop’s serves 800 students in grades 6 through 12. San Diego’s only independent middle and high school affiliated with the Episcopal Church, Bishop’s is an inclusive community where students come from more than 70 schools representing diverse religious, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This school year, 49 percent of students self-identify as people of color and 20 percent receive more than $3 million in financial aid. Chaplain Nicole Simopoulos-Pigato said, “We emphasize compassion for all people, respect for the dignity of every human being, and the calls to love our neighbors as ourselves and to strive for justice and peace in the world.” Bishop’s programs are designed to meet students’ individual needs – both academically and emotionally, as student well-being is the top priority. Academic options, levels and paths are offered to best fit every student’s abilities, interests and potential, ensuring readiness and success in college and beyond. Opportunities extend beyond the classroom, including academic competitions, international travel, a peer support group, affinity groups, guest speakers and a community service program, to name a few. There are 72 different sports teams, 40 performing arts shows per year in dance, theater, and choral and instrumental music, and visual arts possibilities from photography to animation and more. Learning, leading and acting with open hearts and minds, Bishop’s students engage in the classroom, the community, and the world. 

ocated on 10 elevated acres in Scripps Ranch, St. Gregory the Great Catholic School is a K-8 elementary school and preschool community offering a faith-based educational curriculum that seeks to foster Christian values, inspire academic excellence, and encourage global awareness through service to others. At St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, each child is recognized and appreciated for their unique qualities and supported in developing their God-given gifts and talents. All aspects of the school environment are infused with Catholic values. Each day begins with outdoor community prayer, prayers for special intentions, reflection on the Catholic virtue of the week, reflection on special feast days and seasons in the liturgical year, salute to the flag, and patriotic song. Twice a month, the school community celebrates liturgy at the parish church four miles from the St. Gregory campus. Students are involved in liturgy preparation and actively participate at mass in various capacities. The school curriculum incorporates spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and kinesthetic learning experiences through teaching of six core subjects 30 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • October | November 2019

(religion, language arts, literature, mathematics, social studies, and science), as well as fine arts and physical education. The religion curriculum is aligned with the Diocesan Curriculum Course Content Guidelines, as are all other subjects. “The combination of both Common Core Standards and Diocesan Curriculum Guidelines makes for a challenging academic program with an integrated Catholic identity,” said Principal Maeve O’Connell. Stewardship and service are also integral to the Catholic identity. Students organize, plan, and participate in a wide variety of local and global service opportunities throughout the school year. “Our students are called to be productive citizens who recognize their ability to make a difference in our world today and in the future,” affirmed Principal O’Connell. St. Gregory the Great Catholic School is WCEA/ WASC-accredited. Faculty and staff embrace all learning styles and work to develop instructional strategies to meet each student’s individual needs. Above all, students are inspired to realize their Godgiven potential and embrace a faith-filled future of leadership, stewardship, and lifelong learning. 

F

or 55 years, St. Michael’s School has educated thousands of children who have gone on to become successful members and leaders in our city, state, and country. St. Michael’s School graduates have earned numerous high school merit scholarships and excelled in Honors and AP classes, and several of our alumni have been high school valedictorians. Close to 100% of SMS alumni accept offers of admission to colleges and universities, often with substantial scholarships. Families experience a vibrant community at St. Michael’s School and Preschool, where parents, teachers, and students develop meaningful and mutually supportive relationships. A highly qualified faculty educates, nurtures, and encourages students in all facets of growth. With a comprehensive curriculum that includes rigorous instruction in English language arts, math, science, social studies, and religion, a wide variety of co-curricular opportunities, and an extensive array of after-school enrichment, St. Michael’s students develop a love of learning and an eagerness to expand and develop their unique gifts and talents. In addition, students are regularly engaged in leadership, public speaking, and service opportunities. Social-emotional and visible learning programs are interwoven through every subject. Vocal music, instrumental music, visual arts, technology and coding, physical education, and Spanish are offered during the school day, while after-school sports, musical theater, choir, chess, cooking, Academic Decathlon, extended school services, are just a few after school options. The school’s mission – “With Jesus Christ as our model, St. Michael’s School guides students to grow in faith, knowledge, and character, and prepares them to be active members in the Church and community” – is central to St. Michael’s approach to teaching the whole child: heart, mind, body, and soul. 

VILLAGE CHURCH PRESCHOOL

A

lifelong journey of learning and inspiration begins at the Village Church Preschool (VCP). Children ages two to five can play, learn, and grow through the school’s focus on developing the whole child. “A young child is constantly learning through experimentation, exploration, and having the need to solve problems. Our goal is to help foster the development of a child’s critical thinking skills and ability to communicate by providing meaningful opportunities to experiment, question, and play,” said Director Nancy Betts. Teachers get to know each child as an individual, developing unique curriculum to engage and inspire each child’s interests. STEAM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, arts, and math – feature prominently in the curriculum. VCP’s rich history speaks to a legacy of support and achievement. The school was founded in 1962 by young moms at the Village Church seeking the perfect place for their children to learn and play – today, some of the earliest students are now sending their own students to VCP. The highly educated teaching staff is part of that legacy as well. “Our staff are experienced, passionate educators who view children as valuable, competent learners,” Director Betts shared. “Our average length of employment for our teachers is 20 years. In short, our teachers love teaching, and they love teaching here!” VCP knows it takes a village to raise a child, and teachers build meaningful relationships with the entire family. Supportive, respectful relationships between children and their peers, teachers, and families are vital for healthy development. “Our school embraces each family to create a welcoming environment and inspire a sense of community and fellowship,” Director Betts said.
