FROM THE PUBLISHER

VOL. 8, NO. 1 TM

Oh, to Be Young Again!

W

hen I published my first community magazine, our oldest daughter was in the eighth grade. Our son was in kindergarten, and our youngest daughter hadn’t yet started school. The strange thing is that it feels like 2009 was just yesterday. Fast forward, and our oldest daughter is now a senior in college, our son is an eighth grader, and our youngest daughter is in seventh grade. As you know, I often write about time flying by. This past weekend marked another milestone for the Breaux household. Ashley, our oldest daughter, celebrated her 21st birthday! Much to our surprise, Ashley invited us to go out with her group of friends on her special night in downtown San Diego. After repeatedly asking her if she was sure about having her parents tag along, my wife and I reluctantly agreed to go (along with another lifelong friend of ours that Ashley refers to as Aunt Wendy). We needed another adult from our generation for moral support. The group started at a count of 15 people. We all had dinner at a restaurant downtown before Ubering to the first club. The intentions were to stick around for a little while and then head out. That plan didn’t work out so well, as we ended up staying for the duration of the evening. The night was filled with a variety of emotions. I was observing our baby girl in her adult environment for the very first time. Although we were very much interacting with the group, at times I felt like a fly on the wall – silently observing and taking in the entire experience. She was having a great time Derrick and his daughter Ashley circa 2005. Time flies! with her close friends, laughing, dancing, and celebrating. More of Ashley’s friends kept arriving. Some arrivals were clearly unexpected and a special surprise to her. The entire situation touched our hearts. There was one common theme – everyone was there to celebrate with her on her special day. It was at that moment that I realized our baby girl was grown up. Although some may see it as unconventional, we had a great time celebrating with our daughter and her friends that night. I would like to give a special thanks to Ashley’s friends for being such an important part of her life and enthusiastically welcoming us old people into their circle. I still don’t feel like I’m a “grown up” yet. In many aspects, I still feel the same way that I felt when I was a teenager. But make no mistake about it, watching my baby girl turn 21 years old definitely puts me one step closer in my search to feel grown up. Oh, to be young again…

Talia Putman Uses Her Experience to Help Others by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

W

hile most Sweet 16 birthday parties have gifts typical for teenage girl life, Talia Putman made a different request of her friends and family – donations to the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego (PASD). Talia intimately knows the impact of the disease and how much PASD helps thousands of people across San Diego. Talia first learned about PASD from her grandmother’s neurologist at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines. “My grandmother lost her battle with Parkinson’s disease on February 7, 2016,” Talia shared. “This disease affected my family so much, and I know so many other families in America are going through the same thing we did,” she said. “I really just wanted to help as much as I can because I know what they are going through.” When Talia’s birthday came on April 1, 2017, she realized it was a great opportunity to support others in the same situation. Her birthday party invitations requested donations to PASD in lieu of gifts. “It meant so much to me to team up with PASD. I mainly did it for my grandmother because she meant the world to me,” she shared. Talia’s party raised $1,265 in donations for PASD. A junior at Westview High School, Talia is involved in the cheer program, the Fashion Club, and AVID. She shared that AVID is her favorite class because “it has helped me gain more knowledge about different colleges and realistically prepare for it.” Looking ahead, Talia’s top college choice is Chapman University, and she is considering majoring in human services. Talia’s family is a strong influence in her life. “My mother and grandmother inspire me the most because of how strong and business savvy they are,” she said. Talia appreciates the close family connections she has growing up in Torrey Highlands; most of her extended family lives in Rancho Peñasquitos. Talia recognized this last year that she can use her family’s experience to help others. “It makes me happy to know that I can help a great cause and my age can’t stop me from doing what is right,” she acknowledged. “I’d like to think that I made a difference and I can influence other people my age to not be afraid to do these types of things.” 

Courage Is Beautiful

LOCAL ORGANIZATION MAKES A DIFFERENCE FOR MILITARY WOMEN

R

ancho Peñasquitos’ Operation Courage is Beautiful (OCIB) aims to bring joy and femininity to active duty, deployed U.S. servicewomen through care packages prepared especially for them. The packages include things like toiletries, women’s magazines and books, sunscreen, makeup, nail care products, feminine hygiene products, and personal notes of thanks and encouragement. In 2016, OCIB shipped care packages to over 70 distinct zip codes including Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar, South Korea, Germany, South America, North Africa, and naval ships at sea. As a locally based nonprofit, OCIB is heavily reliant on the 92129 community. High school students from Mt. Carmel and Westview, local Girl Scouts, employees at Intuit, and general community members

OCIB Founder Cindy Chan and her sister and OCIB Executive Director Casey Chan-Ruthenbeck grew up in PQ and remain rooted in the community. “It is without a doubt a lot of fun to pack the nice gift boxes, but the most rewarding thing is to receive the notes of thanks from the servicemembers,” Casey said. “It really reminds me of the value of what we do, and it keeps me going. Not all women will want or need our care packages but there are many who do.” OCIB is forming a team for the Mermaid Series 5K/10K/half marathon to be held in Mission Bay in March 2018. A Beautiful COMMUNITY

PQ Is the Place to be for the Nellies Family by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

I

t was a blind date that began the journey of Shannon and Patrick Nellies, and they have been going strong ever since! Shannon, Patrick, Hannah, Ryan, and Finn Nellies have been living in Rancho Peñasquitos for the past 15 years (they were there when there was no 56 freeway and a lot of construction traffic), and they’ve loved being able to live in this beautiful community while watching the kids grow up. The Nellies spend much time at Canyonside Community Park where the kids play baseball and softball. “We enjoy hiking back to the waterfall, going to the beach, and hanging out with family and friends,” Shannon said. Shannon teaches science at Park Village Elementary School, recently taking over the science team there, along with her Rodan +

Fields skincare business. “I love teaching science at Park Village,” she smiled. “I honestly believe that science can be so much fun and so interesting for everyone as long as you are not just reading a book about it – you have to do it.” Patrick is a founding partner of Advantage Law group, where he practices employment law. “In 2013 he received the Outstanding Advocate of the Year Award from the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego,” Shannon shared, “for his work representing employees in San Diego County.” He’s very involved with the Rancho Peñasquitos Little League, where he sits on the board of directors as director of community partnerships, grants, and government affairs. He’s also served as assistant coach on Ryan’s intermediate team, was team manager for Finn’s Minors team,

and was manager for the Rancho Peñasquitos American 9/10 All-Star team. Daughter Hannah is a sophomore at Westview High School. She earned her Silver Award in Girl Scouts last year, plays on the Westview JV softball team, loves baking, and is involved in their church youth group, theater, and choir. Ryan is in seventh grade at Mesa Verde Middle School. “He is an avid reader who also loves baseball and beating his dad at chess,” Shannon laughed. Finn is in fifth grade at Park Village. “He is the athlete of the family,” Shannon said. “He played All-Stars for PQ Little League and is in his second year pitching for the California Lookouts travel baseball team.” Both boys are altar servers at their church. Whatever the activity, the Nellies family is loving their life in Rancho Peñasquitos. 

Prevent Childhood Obesity 5 Tips for Parents

by GURINDER DABHIA, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo Help create healthy habits and prevent children from being overweight or obese by starting simple. According to the National Institutes of Health, about one third of children between the ages of 6 and 19 are considered overweight (BMI 85 to 95 percent) or obese (BMI greater than 95 percent), taking a toll on their emotional health and setting them up for health issues as adults.

development. Generally children need to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Keep water, fruits, vegetables, and other low-calorie snacks readily available.

However, parents and caregivers can do a lot to help children become healthier and make it a priority. Try these tips to encourage healthy living in your home:

3. Include kids in grocery shopping and cooking. Bring your children to the store and have them help you select healthy foods. Have them pick out fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of colors, from red tomatoes to blueberries and yellow bananas. When cooking, give them an age-appropriate task in the kitchen and explain what you are making and why it is good for them.

1. Be a role model. Parents have tremendous impact on their children. If you lead an active and healthy lifestyle at home, chances are high that your family will as well. 2. Develop healthy eating habits. Your pediatrician can advise you on what your child needs to eat to support healthy growth and

Treats are okay in moderation, but limit high-fat and high-sugar snacks and sugar-sweetened drinks to help kids develop good eating habits. Schedule regular meal times since most children thrive on routine and make meals a part of your regular routine as well. Parents should attempt to be completely present and engaged during meals, which means no electronics! If kids see this as a priority to you, it will become one for them as well.

4. Cut back on screen time. Spending too much time in front of the television or computer has been shown to contribute to obesity. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends limiting daily screen time to

two hours or less and removing mobile devices from bedrooms when it’s time for sleep. 5. Encourage exercise. The AAP recommends that children six and older get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise daily. The activity does not have to occur at one time, but can be broken into smaller periods during the day. For instance, riding a bike to and from school for 15 minutes, playing at the park for 30 minutes, and a 15-minute family walk after dinner adds up to an hour of activity – and fun. Your pediatrician can suggest an activity or sport that is developmentally appropriate. Don’t overdo it. Exercise should not hurt, and you want your child to have fun with physical activity. Be positive and proactive, and always let your children know you love them and that you want them to be healthy and happy. Make sure to stress that it’s not about the weight, but about being healthy and starting to introduce and establish a healthy lifestyle and make those healthy choices at a young age. If you have concerns about your child’s development, weight, eating habits, or activity, speak with your pediatrician. 

COMMUNITY STUFF

Drop Off Unused Prescriptions North County residents looking for a safe, convenient way to dispose of unused prescription medications have a number of local drop boxes to choose from. Most police departments and sheriff’s stations throughout the county offer collection boxes in their lobbies, which are open weekdays during business hours for anyone to drop off their unused medications. Disposing of unused prescription drugs is important to avoid non-prescribed use – whether through accidental consumption or drug abuse. The North Inland Community Prevention Program recommends that individuals use prescription medications only as prescribed, don’t share prescribed medication with others, store them securely, and properly dispose of them when they expire or are no longer needed. Drop off prescription drugs at San Diego Police Northeastern Division, 13396 Salmon River Rd., or find other locations at www.sandiegorxabusetaskforce.org/blank.

Scripps Hospitals Ranked First in San Diego The combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla were recently ranked No. 1 in the San Diego region, No. 6 in California, and among the best in the nation in eight specialties on the U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals list. The U.S. News rankings recognize the nation’s top 50 out of 4,658 hospitals that excel in treating patients with the most challenging healthcare needs. Scripps La Jolla and Scripps Green hospitals were also designated as highperforming in several other areas and achieved the highest possible score on performance treating nine relatively common adult procedures and conditions. “Ranking No. 1 in San Diego and among the best in the nation is the result of the hard work of our physicians, nurses, and staff who focus every day on always getting better,” said Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO of Scripps Health. “While we are deeply honored by this recognition, it’s really our patients who are the winners because they have access to outstanding healthcare right here at home.”

Kids Free in October Step out and explore the depths of the ocean or the far reaches of outer space with the family this fall with Kids Free in October. The annual program provides free admission for kids ages 12 and under at 40 cultural, arts, and science museums throughout San Diego County. Participating museums include the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, Coronado Museum of History and Art, San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, and the USS Midway Museum, among many others. Nearly 20,000 kids participated in the program last year. One coupon is good for up to two free child admissions with one full-price paid adult admission. You will need one coupon per museum visit. In addition, two children 12 years old and under can ride the Metropolitan Transit System for free with a paid adult on Saturdays and Sundays. Children under five years old always ride free with adults. For more information visit www.sandiegomuseumcouncil.org/kidsfree. 24 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • October | November 2017

New Band Directors at Westview

Mitchell Way

Martin Fierro

Westview High School’s Gold band, orchestra, and color guard are under new direction this year for the first time in the history of the school. Mitchell Way will serve as director and Martin Fierro will serve as associate director. Mitchell previously taught band and orchestra at Grossmont High School for one year and served as director of instrumental music at Helix Charter High School for five years. Martin completed his student teaching at Mt. Carmel High School and previously served as assistant director of instrumental music at Point Loma High School. “I am truly excited and humbled to be the new Instrumental Music Director at Westview,” Mitchell said. “The program Jeri Webb created over the last 14 years is so unique and exudes such excellence, and I am grateful to be at the helm now.”

Volunteer Teamwork After over a year of planning and hard work, Junior Girl Scouts Anneliese Fiegl, Mia Robles, and Emily Entwistle recently completed their Bronze Award project. They spent the time learning critical business skills, making community connections, identifying a need in the community, and finally, carrying out their plan of donating over 300 wanted items to local children undergoing cancer treatment at Rady Children’s Hospital. “To see what we were able to do for other kids our age and the generosity of others was so humbling,” said one girl. Her fellow scout added, “Everyone was so kind and appreciative of what we did. It was so nice to see our work mean so much!” All three girls are members of Troop 2856 and fifth grade students at St. Michael’s School. Mia lives in 92129, and Anneliese and Emily live in 92128 – they were grateful for the community support throughout the project. “Rallying a group of people to work together for a common cause was amazing,” shared one of the girls.

Rather than focus on profits I want to focus on student success with community development.”

“I OFFER A FRESH TAKE ON THE INDUSTRY. RATHER THAN FOCUS ON PROFITS I WANT TO FOCUS ON STUDENT SUCCESS WITH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.” The tutors at Avanza are college graduates and have experience in teaching. “Many have a credential or are working on a credential,” added Richard. The tutors are also trained in Avanza’s 5 STAR Method, which Richard created to help both the tutor and the student create a pathway for success. “This method is organized and researched and allows our teachers the freedom to teach to their skills and provides a learning path for success for the student,” stated Richard. Avanza Education offers small group test preparation courses at five different locations throughout San Diego County: Del Mar Heights, Rancho Bernardo, La Jolla, Scripps Ranch, and San Marcos. “One-toone tutoring can take place anywhere the tutor and student find as the most convenient location,” noted Richard. “This can be at home, library, a coffee shop, or even online.” As for his future business goals, Richard hopes to expand Avanza Education throughout the county and to Orange County and Los Angeles in the next couple of years. “Within that time have a sustainable cash flow to provide many free programs for those students who cannot afford test prep, college prep, and tutoring,” he added. “I would like to create a service that provides high quality education accessible to all and creates lifelong learners.” 

Culture The Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council Supports and Connects the Community photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

For over 40 years, the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council (RPTC) has been dedicated to serving, representing, and promoting the activities and interests of all Rancho Peñasquitos residents. By maintaining strong community partnerships, the RPTC is able to provide grants and scholarships to individuals or organizations for activities, events, and projects that directly benefit PQ. The council is also the group behind a number of community events throughout the year, like the annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos. And with its “What’s New in PQ?” column in every issue of our very own 92129 Magazine, the RPTC keeps the PQ community abreast of events, local information, and other important updates. Read along as we speak with RPTC President Elijah Nicolas and learn more about the group’s impactful work in the community.

CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE RANCHO PEÑASQUITOS TOWN COUNCIL? WHEN WAS IT FOUNDED AND BY WHOM?

The RPTC was established in 1975 as 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization funded by donations from residents and local businesses. WHAT IS THE MISSION OF THE RPTC, AND HOW DO YOU WORK TOWARDS THAT GOAL?

The purpose of the Town Council is to serve, represent, and promote the activities and interests of all Rancho de los Peñasquitos residents. We rely on donations, government grants, and the annual fiesta to raise the funds for our community grants and sponsorships. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE WITHIN THE COUNCIL?

As president, I serve as the chair of the executive committee. I am also responsible for setting meeting agendas and sending them out to all Town Council members and community partners. HOW DID YOU PERSONALLY BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE COUNCIL?

A few years back, one of my good friends from middle school, Brian Reschke, kept talking about joining the council and I’ve always been interested to see what really takes place. Two years ago, I made myself present and haven’t looked back. WHO ARE THE RPTC BOARD MEMBERS? HOW ARE THEY CHOSEN TO BE ON THE BOARD?

President – Elijah Nicolas; VP – Matt Benedict; Treasurer – Brian Reschke; Parliamentarian – Alan Gin; Secretary – Open. The board is elected by the Town Council Membership each June with an annual term of July through June. TELL US ABOUT THE DIFFERENT COMMITTEES WITHIN THE COUNCIL AND THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF EACH.

HEALTH AND SAFETY – The charter of the Health and Safety Committee is to promote a healthy environment in PQ for all residents and discuss issues that affect the schools and students in PQ. Educate and promote current needs with blood drives, disaster preparedness, and coyote and rattlesnake abatement events. Chaired by David De Vries. EDUCATION – Collaborate with local schools providing community scholarship competitions through art and English contests during the fall and spring. Chaired by Roger Platt and Jessica Xu. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, PUBLIC RELATIONS – This committee’s goal is to serve, represent, and promote the activities and interests of all Rancho Peñasquitos residents and keep those residents informed about current events affecting PQ by means of all media outlets and electronic communications. This committee works to increase council visibility in the community. Chaired by Kate Glenn. WEB AND PRINT – This committee will maintain and add content to the council website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages and maintains a community contact list to include individuals and groups creating an online newsletter to potentially include: council contact information, fundraising, elected officials’ updates, crime stats, Planning Board update, sports, parks and rec, schools, library, business, church, other community interest items, and write the 92129 Magazine column. Chaired by Kate Glenn. BANNER DISTRICT – This committee solicits businesses to sponsor and design new street banners for the community to raise interest in local businesses with advertising on those banners.

The last few years our main sponsor SDCCU has been very supportive in working with us to help promote the YMCA Farmers Market and San Diego County Fair. Chaired by the Executive Board. GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS – The committee fields and refers questions from the community that fall into the category of “government affairs.” The committee may organize candidate forums around election cycles, possibly in conjunction with another Town Council (Rancho Bernardo or Mira Mesa). Chaired by Brian Reschke. WHAT IS AN ADVISORY REPRESENTATIVE? WHY IS THIS PERSON IMPORTANT?

Representatives attend other local and community group meetings to keep the Town Council and community informed.

Grants will be awarded as the Town Council deems appropriate and as budget permits. We sponsored the YMCA Farmers Market again this last year with $5,000 to support locally grown food options. Community program or event sponsorships are awarded at the discretion of the Grants Committee and approval of the full RPTC Board. To qualify for a sponsorship, the event or program should have a wider community benefit, have our logo appear on promotional material, and can involve a large organization. Sponsorships do not generally exceed $1,000. If your request falls into this category, please use the sponsorship form on our website. TELL US ABOUT THE FIESTA DE LOS PEÑASQUITOS. WHAT IS ITS SIGNIFICANCE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY?

The Fiesta de los Peñasquitos Annual Street Fair has been the premiere community entertainment event for the last 23 years with attendance of 17,000 to 25,000 residents each year coming out to celebrate the best of Rancho Peñasquitos. We recognize the excellence in the community service and award the top achievers at every level of graduation in our school system, an outstanding business, and individual contributions

who have provided our community with acts of service that go above and beyond, making a difference for Rancho Peñasquitos. We have local vendors, artisans, entertainment, and a fun zone. This next year we will be featuring a car club with many local members. WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OR ACTIVITIES IS THE COUNCIL INVOLVED WITH?

The Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council is a sponsor of the weekly Rancho Peñasquitos Certified Farmers Market, bringing locally grown organic fruits, vegetables, honey, eggs, and artisans. We have also supported Movies in the Park, Sienna’s Playground Equipment Project by Rolling Hills Elementary, Cookies & Cocoa with Santa, a gift drive supporting foster kids with Voices For Children, BLAST afterschool program at Los Peñasquitos Elementary School, and the Courage Is Beautiful care package program for deployed military personnel from Rancho Peñasquitos and surrounding areas. HOW WOULD INTERESTED COMMUNITY MEMBERS BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE RPTC?

Everyone is always invited to our monthly meetings that take place every first Thursday of the month. If you find that any one of the events or committees interest you, start there and volunteer. We’d love to have you! ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING EVENTS THE COMMUNITY SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

Each year we hold a Growing Up PQ essay contest in partnership with

At- A - G l an ce

92129 Magazine, beginning in November. This year local students in grades K through 12 are invited to submit essays reflecting on the theme “PQ Youth Volunteers.” Qualified entries will describe one specific volunteer experience, what it means to them, and how it makes PQ the best place to call home. Three winning essays (one from each school level – elementary, middle, and high school) will appear in 92129 Magazine’s next issue and on the Town Council’s website, and the authors will receive cash prizes! The deadline to enter is Nov. 2. See our website for more information.

We will also be hosting Cookies & Cocoa with Santa on Dec. 3 at the Hotel Karlan. It is a free community event and gift drive for foster kids with Voices for Children. There will be music, holiday crafts, face painting, desserts, photos with Santa, and lots of fun! WHEN AND WHERE DOES THE COUNCIL MEET?

The Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council meets the first Thursday of every month at the Hotel Karlan, 14455 Penasquitos Dr., San Diego, CA 92129. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. WHAT ARE THE COUNCIL’S SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS?

DENTISTRY PROFILE

RESTORING BEAUTIFUL AND HEALTHY SMILES Dr. Susan Hong Offers Patients the Latest Dental Technology in a Warm and Friendly Environment photos courtesy of Dr. Susan Hong

hen Dr. Hong opened her family and cosmetic dentistry practice in Rancho Bernardo, she focused on providing the highest quality dental care in a comfortable and welcoming environment. “I didn’t want it to feel clinical and cold,” explained Dr. Hong. For patients’ comfort, the dental chairs have heat and massage features, and televisions on the ceilings so patients can be distracted during procedures. The practice also offers the option of Sedation or Sleep Dentistry for patients who are especially anxious about visiting the dentist. Dr. Hong places great value on building lifelong relationships with her patients and providing the best possible clinical care based on trust, compassion, and empathy. “I like to focus on the patient as a whole, not just his or her mouth. I want to get to know the person and their story. That’s what I enjoy the most,” she said. “I am also very aware that I need to earn a patient’s trust and I work very hard at respecting their expectations and letting them know that I will do my best to meet their needs.” The practice is dedicated to using the latest in digital technology to diagnose and assess the needs of their patients. This includes: Digital Sensors and Intraoral Cameras that give patients a birds-eye view of their mouths as well as helping detect decay with fluorescent imaging technology; hand-held x-ray (NOMAD) machines that emit significantly less radiation than traditional x-rays; and Laser Technology to help reduce bacteria in the mouths of patients with gum disease.

W

Dr. Hong also emphasizes the importance of understanding medical-dental relationships. “For example, when I see worn teeth and an enlarged tongue,” she explained, “I may recommend a sleep study to screen for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).” Dr. Hong offers more easily adaptable and adjustable oral appliances to treat OSA, as opposed to the traditional Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, which can be uncomfortable and inconvenient for most apnea patients. The practice also provides Invisalign Treatment, Smile Makeovers, TMJ therapy, Laser Teeth Whitening, and Oral Cancer Screening using ViziLite Technology. Ultimately, Dr. Hong and her team aim to create the most effective and comfortable experience possible for each and every one of their patients. “I live in the community so it’s important to me that our team treats all our patients like friends and family.” AT-A-GLANCE Dr. Hong is a native New Yorker and graduate of Name of Business: Dr. Susan Hong the University Family and Cosmetic Dentistry of Pennsylvania Owner: Dr. Susan Hong School of Dental Established: 2015 Medicine. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

CREATING A TEAM PQ VOLUNTEER JACLYN COLTON COACHES SOCCER FOR THE YMCA by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

A

lthough she and her husband grew up in Maryland, Rancho Peñasquitos has been home to Jaclyn Colton and her family for the past two-and-a-half years, where they live within walking distance to everything. A lifelong soccer player, Jaclyn makes a point of getting involved in a local youth sports program wherever they’ve lived (her husband is an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps). She’s been volunteering as a soccer coach for the YMCA in PQ, ages ranging from 5 to 13. “Sports are a wonderful way for children to be active, make friends, and to learn many different life skills,” Jaclyn shared. “It is my privilege to be a part of empowering our youth as they develop their talents and interests, eventually becoming good and productive citizens.” In the soccer season, Coach Jaclyn has two goals in mind: evaluating the needs of every child to provide an environment where they can improve themselves, and creating a team who trusts each other. “This requires finding a balance between demanding the most from them,” she explained, “while ensuring that they’re having a great time and want to return.” She has also started running a clinic during the week – the leagues run only on Saturdays – providing an important way for children to get some extra practice and play time. “Every season I get to watch a group of individuals learn to work as one,” Jaclyn smiled, “and it’s amazing.” Jaclyn chose volunteering specifically at the YMCA because it provided a practical way for all four of her children to play multiple sports at once, around the same time and location. She loves that the YMCA not only values skill development, but good sportsmanship – evidenced when the players in the league start and end each game with a handshake. “It’s not just about soccer,” Jaclyn shared, “but as YMCA sports creed says, improving ourselves ‘in mind, body, and spirit.’” She is thrilled to be involved in making quality soccer practices affordable and accessible to all kids with a passion for the sport. Volunteers are definitely needed. “There is some paperwork involved and some online youth and safety training,” Jaclyn said, “but it can be done relatively quickly.” While Jaclyn has many diverse interests – hiking, camping, swimming, and beachgoing – plus a love of learning everything from dancing and painting to Byzantine chanting, she is a coach at heart and would love to see more people involved and volunteering in the YMCA. 

Sharing Creativity RANCHO PEÑASQUITOS ARTIST EXHIBITS WORK AT POP-UP SHOP

9

2129 resident and artist Mindy Kral recently exhibited her art locally for the first time. She was one of three local artists displaying and selling work at a pop-up shop in Little Dame, an alternative retail and art space in North Park. It was a lively evening, packed with visitors enjoying the art and refreshments. “It was so much fun, and a great opportunity to share my work with my friends, family, and art enthusiasts!” Mindy shared. “I’m very grateful to Little Dame’s coowners, Katie and Simone, for displaying my art. Their shop is such a cool and creative space.” Mindy graduated from Sonoma State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting, but she works in a wide variety of mediums, including oil paintings, ceramic sculptures, etchings, and digital art. “My pieces for this show were mostly ceramics, including a selection of fox skulls, an armadillo-shaped jar, and faux taxidermy creatures,” she explained. Themes of nature and a blend of wilderness and urban life are common threads in her artistic explorations. “I’m fascinated by the natural world, and the ways people relate to and differ from other animals,” she said. “My work often depicts animals and environments that reflect aspects of human nature.” She currently works at Painting with a Twist in Rancho Bernardo. Selena Laniel This American Ninja Warrior, Mother, and Local Firefighter Inspires Others With Her Determination and Heart by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

A

s a contestant on American Ninja Warrior (Seasons 4, 6, 7, and 9), Selena Laniel has faced many challenges. “American Ninja Warrior is not just about overcoming physical obstacles. You need mental strength to focus, stay calm, and figure out how to complete the course,” revealed Selena. Although it can be tough to deal with when a small mistake means not completing the course, Selena’s positive outlook gets her through to the next competition. “You have to accept the outcome no matter what and realize how fortunate you were to be standing at the start of the course, with the lights, cameras, and bleachers full of fans cheering you on,” stated Selena. Last year, Selena was chosen as a top Ninja to compete on a new show, Team Ninja Warrior. She is on the Towers of Power team, along with Brandon Mears and Dan Polizzi. All three members of the Towers of Power team are firefighters, and according to Selena, they are quite an amazing team! Season 1 of Team Ninja Warrior ended early for Selena when she dislocated her shoulder during one of her races. However, Season 2 was a triumph when she made history as the oldest female up the Warped Wall. Before becoming a firefighter and competing as a Ninja Warrior, Selena was an acrobat in the Blue Horizon show at SeaWorld. When she decided to go for her dream of joining the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, she knew it would be difficult, but worth it. She earned her Fire Science degree from Miramar (she had previously attended college in Montreal, Canada) and graduated from the San Diego Fire Academy. “The Academy was by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I am so proud of my accomplishment, and I love inspiring girls and women by showing them that anything is attainable if they’re willing to work for it,” said Selena. When it comes to what inspires her to continue to work hard and pursue her dreams, Selena is quick to point to her two daughters, Alicia and Maya. Alicia is a junior at Westview High School, a varsity soccer player, and a member of the San Diego Soccer Club. Maya is a freshman at Westview and is a Level 9 gymnast with many championships and titles to her name. “My girls inspire me to be the best version of myself every day,” stated Selena proudly. 

Is the Real Estate Market Slowing Down? by JEAN RILEY

T

he short answer is NO. Many people are concerned we will see another bubble in real estate prices, but I hate to break it to those folks that there is not one on the horizon. The last bubble a decade ago was fueled by irresponsible lending practices, over-building by home builders, and pure speculation. This created a perfect storm resulting in a major housing bust in 2007-2008. Today, qualifying for a mortgage is much more stringent, and loans are being issued to well-qualified borrowers. Inventory is at an all-time low and will continue to be tight as families debate whether to sell and move up, or stay and renovate their home. So the question is: how long will values hold on? Realtor.org tracks the Housing Affordability Index, where anything with a measure over 100 means that housing is not too expensive for the average household income. In 2016 the index had a reading of 153, well above 100. In 2006 it had a reading of 108. In the next five years we are expecting to see Average Annual Household Formations rise to levels we haven’t seen since the

RECENT SALES ACTIVITY

JEAN RILEY

Baby Boomers were buying their first homes. This indicates that future demand will be rising in years to come, helping to further stabilize values. Lastly, according to pulsenomics.com, they are expecting an average cumulative house appreciation by 2020 of 18.7%. When we look at all this data combined, it gives us a positive outlook on home prices and clearly shows there is not a bubble coming any time soon. For those thinking about selling and moving up, now is a great time to consider, seeing that a bubble or drop in prices seems unlikely in the coming years. Overall, it is an ideal time to buy or sell your house! 
