Vol. 3, No. 1 TM
Publisher Derrick Breaux
What is the Special Ingredient?
W
atching each issue of this magazine come together is a very exciting thing for me. Regardless of the number of editorial meetings that we have, it is always fun to see the completed design in print. We feature local students, families, volunteers, businesses and other stories as they relate to our immediate community. We often talk about how there’s a little something for everyone inside of these pages – whether you are 4 years old or 104 years old. Many people often ask me about our community and what makes it a special place. It’s easy to run down the typical list – beautiful homes, high-ranking schools, nice people, close proximity to a lot of things, etc. We talk about these things all of the time. In fact, many of us moved to our community specifically for these things. But there’s something more. There seems to be a special ingredient that can be found in our great communities. I believe that special ingredient is volunteerism. I recently had a conversation with a friend discussing how volunteers have such a positive impact on our local town. In fact, he took it one step further and stated that our community is as nice as it is specifically because of the contribution and donation of time of local volunteers. The more I thought about it, the more I had to agree. There’s something special that happens when people donate their precious time Derrick Breaux for the greater good of the community. Volunteering comes in many Publisher forms. Some people are capable of donating great amounts of time and energy. Others have a more limited ability to donate time. The important ingredient is that contributions are in fact made – big or small. Regardless of the amount of individual time that a person can gift to the community, it’s hard to deny the huge difference that it makes. Whether you are running one of the communities’ nonprofit organizations, volunteering at local events, or simply picking up the occasional piece of litter left behind on the sidewalk, our communities are definitely better places because of the people that do it. Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

IT’S COOKIE TIME Meet Cindy Mayers, the Regional Manager for Girl Scout Cookies by LINDA FRABL | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
W
e all love that time of year when we can purchase those delicious Girl Scout cookies. But did you know there is a Carmel Valley mom, named Cindy Mayers, who tirelessly volunteers behind the scenes to ensure that those coveted boxes of cookies are all properly dispensed and accounted for? As the product sales volunteer regional manager for the Canyon Trails region, Cindy oversees seven service units for not only the Girl Scout Cookie Program, but also the Fall Nut Sale. Group: Mission:
Website: Phone:
Girl Scouts San Diego Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. www.sdgirlscouts.org 800-643-4798
It all began for Cindy when her daughter, Sydney, joined the Girl Scouts in the first grade (Sydney is now a college student at Cal State Monterey Bay). Cindy recalled, “I started by just being a supportive parent in the troop, helping with field trips or meetings. Eventually I became the troop’s Cookie Manager.” When her second daughter, Shayla, joined her own Girl Scout troop in kindergarten (Shayla is now a sophomore at Canyon Crest Academy), Cindy volunteered to be the troop leader – and ten years later, she still is! That led to her branching out into other aspects of the Carmel Valley Girl Scouts; she’s been an encampment coordinator, a Thinking Day coordinator, a troop organizer and of course the service unit cookie coordinator. Cindy reminded us, “All the proceeds from the cookie sales stay in San Diego County to benefit all local Girl Scouts.” The girls in her daughter’s troop are currently benefitting by working hard for their Gold Awards, the highest achievement in girl scouting. Cindy added, “Mentoring the girls who have come in and out of my troop is my biggest accomplishment in volunteering with the Girl Scouts.” This stay-at-home mom has had ample opportunities to feel that sense of accomplishment. In addition to assisting the Girl Scouts, Cindy has also made a difference by helping at the local schools. She shared, “I’ve been active in the PTA at Carmel Creek and Solana Pacific schools. I was a member and President of the School Site Council, and was involved in PTA committees as the VP of Membership, the Vice President and the President.” Happy to volunteer when needed, especially for the Girl Scouts, Cindy encourages others to do the same. She exclaimed, “Whether you want to be a leader or just help with an event, the Girls Scouts can always use volunteers! Visit www.sdgirlscouts.org/volunteer for more information.” ¢

F
or Andy, Melissa, Hannah and Nicky Mikulak, every day is a chance to live life to the fullest, a chance to live a life of adventure, service and gratitude. “We lost our middle child, Max, to cancer in 2008. We have our moments of extreme sadness and always will. But, we are also happy much of the time and are motivated to ‘Live Life to the Max,’” revealed Melissa. Describing Max as “Forever 7,” the Mikulaks honor his memory by hosting a small party each year on Max’s birthday. “We put together party favor bags and deliver them to kids with cancer at Rady’s Children’s Hospital. We then grab In-N-Out and head down to Dave & Buster’s for some fun times together,” said Melissa. This annual get-together means so much to the family for many reasons, but Melissa is especially touched to see Max’s friends come together in his memory to help others. Parents: Andy and Melissa Mikulak Children: Hannah (14) – Freshman at CCA Nicky (8) – 3rd grade at Solana Highlands Max (Forever 7) – 2nd grade at Solana Highlands Community: Carmel Valley/Santa Fe Summit since 2002 Hometown: Andy – Los Altos, CA; Melissa – San Diego, CA Profession: Andy – Media Executive; Melissa – Homemaker & Non-Profit Event Director

In fact, only two drugs Max, to cancer in 2008. have been approved by the FDA for use on children’s cancers in the past thirty We have our moments years,” explained Melissa. This inspirational family has lived also happy much of the in Carmel Valley since 2002 and has time and are motivated to found that the area fits their lifestyle ‘Live Life to the Max,’” perfectly. “The proximity to the beach, North County’s coastal community feel and the great schools were the main reasons we decided to live in this area,” explained Melissa. Currently, Hannah is a freshman at Canyon Crest Academy and Nicky is a third grader at Solana Highlands. Hannah enjoys creative writing, photography and art. Nicky loves riding his bike to school and is an avid soccer fan. Both Hannah and Nicky take Jiu Jitsu and truly enjoy the sport. As a family, the Mikulaks can often be found hiking on local trails, visiting nearby parks and playgrounds and spending time at the beach. ¢

RB Honorary Mayor Alex Monroe kicked off the night with a thank you to the hosts and attendees. There were door prizes that were won, including a bottle of wine and an enticing gift basket. Miguel’s catered with delicious finger foods and chips and dip, and live music was provided by the Sandy Devito Combo. One of the girls’ godfather, Eric Jones, is a chairman of the Builders Industry Association (BIA) Cares Holiday Bike Drive and over the years, BIA has provided bikes to more than 6,750 children and to seventy-five different charities in San Diego. For Carolyna’s school toy drive at Solana Highlands Elementary School, her class had been asked to sponsor a family who was in need. Through the Solana Highlands Care and Share Program, each student was assigned to a specific family member to sponsor. Carolyna took a page from the girls’ godfather Eric, and decided she wanted to donate a bicycle for a sponsor family with children, along with helmets and other gifts. As sisters do, Emily decided to donate a bike for the family as well. The toy drive donated to children living in south east San Diego, Bario Logan, and Logan Heights. The sponsored children attend school at Cesar Chavez, Hamilton, Baker and Perkins Schools. Catryn Fowler, mother of the two girls, said, “Solana Pacific Elementary School’s goal was to ensure that each of these children received at least one present for Christmas, and the student’s generous donation may be the only gift that these children received during the holiday season. Many of these children live in shelters, in cars or are even homeless.” The Fowler sisters plan to continue their donation efforts in the future, motivated by their mother Catryn, Eric Jones, and the children that they help.

or Sarina Nash, it’s not unusual to balance photo shoots with homework and biology projects. She is a model, on the cusp of making it big, and an AP student at Torrey Pines High School whose GPA is as impressive as her modeling success. “I have a GPA of 3.88 right now and hope to be over 4.0 soon. In modeling, my biggest job so far was for the May 2013 issue of Seventeen Magazine,” related Sarina, who was discovered when she was thirteen. Since that chance meeting with a photographer outside a local supermarket, Sarina’s career has taken off. She is signed with two agencies – Stars Model Management in the United States and Name: Sarina Nash Cinq Deux Un Models School: Torrey Pines High School in Japan. “I spent Grade: 11 last summer working Parents: Teresa Spehar & Norman Nash in Tokyo. My mom came with me for two weeks, and after that, I was living and working in Tokyo on my own,” revealed Sarina. The independence that modeling has given Sarina is something of which her family is very proud. According to her mother, Teresa, Sarina has become a stronger and more world-savvy young

woman because of her modeling career. “Sarina had the opportunity to personally talk with supermodel Coco Rocha recently, and she learned a great deal. Successful models are truly smart businesswomen who have to form a great sense of self-confidence,” stated Teresa. When it comes to school, Sarina enjoys problem-solving and learning about the world around her. She cites math and biology as her favorite subjects. “I love math because of the opportunity to learn new tricks and rules in the subject. I also like science and when I was in middle school, I participated in the Science Olympiad several times, earning medals both individually and with the Carmel Valley Middle School team,” stated Sarina. Now that she is a junior at TPHS, she is thrilled to have the chance to explore many different academic subjects, and learn from teachers and classmates who have unique talents and interests. Looking to the future, Sarina is open to anything, especially adventure. “I want to travel and hope to take a gap year to do so, maybe together with modeling, before heading to college. I’m not really sure about what career I want to pursue yet,” explained Sarina. It is safe to say that whatever path Sarina chooses, with her academic abilities and natural talents, she will be a star. ¢

t was just another cloudy day in San Diego, but over at the Ocean Air Recreation Center, instead of rain, they got snow. It was Snow Day at the Park, complete with tons of snow, sledding, and Santa. The morning began with a pancake breakfast, where residents could drop off toys for the Toys for Tots drive in exchange for a plate of pancakes and other breakfast goodies. Even Santa Claus was there to greet them and thank them for the contributions. The snow was piled high in small snow hills, the perfect angle for sledding. Attendees were also treated to bounce houses, face painting, arts and crafts, and many performances from local groups. ¢

CHE, KOHN, AND LIEBL BRING THEIR TALENTS AND ASPIRATIONS TO THE SAN DIEGO GULLS by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
SA N D I E G O GU L L S When many people think of ice hockey, they think good ice hockey only happens in Canada. But what if good San Diego players get to go to Canada? That’s what happened to the San Diego Gulls – a middle-school age team from 92130. The Gulls were invited last year to the largest tournament in the world: The Quebec Peewee Invitational. The three members spotlighted here unanimously feel that to be the most memorable experience of their young hockey lives. They were billeted by French families, went dog-sledding, and played in front of 3,000 people.
MASON
I SA AC
TYLER
Carmel Valley has been home to Mason Kohn since he was three, where he started playing hockey in 2009. He is inspired by Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins because of combined talent and work ethic-the same reason he likes the Bruins: “They aren’t made up of super stars, but they work really well as a team.” His goal is to play Division 1 Ice Hockey and hopefully get drafted to the NHL. It probably surprises readers to know that whenever he gets a new piece of hockey gear, he sleeps with it.
Isaac Che moved into Pacific Highland Ranch just two months ago. He started playing hockey at seven, and admires Patrice Bergeron not only for his great athleticism, but because he gives back to the community and visits sick kids at hospitals. “I look up to him,” Isaac told us, “and I hope that kids younger than me will feel the same way about me.” It might surprise readers to know Isaac also plays piano, clarinet and baritone.
Tyler Liebl has lived in Del Mar since birth and has been playing hockey since he was six. His hockey motivations are local: his father and grandfather both played high level hockey in Canada, and “My dad has inspired me to work hard since I was little.” He’d love to play for the Winnipeg Jets, because his father was born there. “I think the thing that would surprise people about me is when I am off the ice people would say that I wouldn’t hurt a fly, but when people see me on the ice hitting and playing really physical, they sometimes ask if that was really me out there.” ¢

Wishing For Mommy, HU Lee Foundation and ATA granted an award to Deborah Gibson, a guard who has been at Beth Am Preschool for over eight years, and was nominated by the student body. This is the first time a school nominated a mother with breast cancer. The Wish Warriors have been traveling nationwide performing for Pink Belt to raise fund for Wishing For Mommy. Mike Chat, Blue Power Ranger and founder of XMA, Channah Zeitung, youngest champion martial artist from San Diego, known for her TV debut on the Katie show in 2013, and Rayna Vallandingham, the youngest world champion with eleven titles, gave a pink belt demonstration before the grant is awarded. Master Shannon Coffee was also there representing ATA and the HU Lee Foundation.
Olympic Athlete in the Making
Katrina Schaber, a sophomore at Canyon Crest Academy (CCA), was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age. She overcame the disability by skiing as a way of physical therapy. She couldn’t imagine that she would one day be able to go to the Winter Olympic Games. Thanks to a special mentoring program by TD Ameritrade, Katrina is looking forward to experiencing what it’s like to be at the Olympics, meet other athletes, and see their experiences. You can help by using the hash tag #itaddsup on Twitter. Every mention of #itaddsup gets athletes like Katrina one mile closer to Sochi. “Athletes often say their first Olympic Games is overwhelming, because they’ve never experienced it before. We want to give that experience to these seven young athletes, so when they hopefully make the team in 2018, they can solely focus on performance and celebrate the little steps it took to get there,” said Denise Karkos, Chief Marketing Officer, TD Ameritrade, Inc., a broker dealer subsidiary of TD Ameritrade Holding Corporation. Bocce For A Cause
Preparations are in full swing for the Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotary’s 18th Annual Turf Bocce Ball Tournament at the Del Mar Horse Park on March 23. Everyone is encouraged to save the date for this annual fundraiser and family day, targeted to raise over $50,000 for youth and humanitarian programs. Rotary Club members are currently signing up sponsors and auction donors. The title sponsor is the Essick-Sims Wealth Management Group at Merrill Lynch, but other sponsors are still needed, from court sponsor to VIP sponsor. “Although many people have said that they don’t know how to play bocce, it is amazing how only a few games will lead them to want a bocce set for a birthday or holiday present,” said Vicky Mallett, Bocce Tournament 2014 Co-Chair. All proceeds raised by the bocce tournament go to worthy activities, most of which benefit youth programs. This year, the two major beneficiaries are Reality Changers and Just In Time. For more information, see www.dmsbbocce.com or contact Vicky Mallett via vicky.mallett2@gmail.com.
Donate to the Nancarrow Healing Garden
Long time San Diego news anchor, Loren Nancarrow, passed away on Dec. 28 after a ten-month battle with brain cancer. Before his death, he and Susan Taylor, Executive Director of External Affairs at Scripps Health, came up with the idea to name the Healing Garden at the Scripps Radiation Therapy Center, “The Loren Nancarrow Healing Garden”. They have raised $108,000 out of the $500,000 needed to re-name the Healing Garden. There will be two benefit concerts to raise money: Feb. 9 at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach and Feb. 21 at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. To donate and see the video that Loren’s family created, visit www.scripps.org/loren.
Little Jumps, Big Changes!
During the month of February, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego will hold its 3rd Annual Little Jumps, BIG Changes campaign. Little Jumps provides lessons and knowledge to club members about how to lead active and healthier lifestyles, while also raising funds to support the Clubs’ three priority outcomes: academic cuccess, character development and healthy lifestyles. According to the Boys & Girls Clubs, this campaign is very important, given the alarming national statistics of childhood obesity and the serious health risks our youth face, such as diabetes and heart disease. They are asking everyone to make a minimum $15 donation to support the 25,000 youth served annually by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. To make a donation or for more information about the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Diego head over to www.sdyouth.org/littlejumps.aspx.
New Chief of Staff for Scripps Memorial
The physicians at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla have elected Carmel Valley resident, M. Jonathan Worsey, M.D., as the new chief of staff of the 318-bed facility. Dr. Worsey took over as head of the 900-member physician team on Jan. 1. Dr. Worsey vowes to improve quality in the delivery of health care services to the more than 125,000 patients cared for annually at the hospital. “It is a great honor to be chosen to lead the world class medical staff that we have here at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Evans and the other distinguished chiefs of staff that preceded him,” said Dr. Worsey. “The changes and challenges facing health care providers, both physicians and hospitals, are perhaps greater now than at any time in a generation. I am looking forward to representing the medical staff in their continued collaboration with Scripps leadership to adapt to and thrive in this new environment so we can continue to provide the best medical care to our patients.”

Local Author Releases “Handbook” for Autism
Carmel Valley author and autism speaker, Chantal Sicile-Kira, has had a lifetime of experience helping with and teaching living skills for severely developmentally disabled and autistic adolescents. As a case manager for the Orange County Regional Center for Developmentally Disabled, Chantal provided information and resources to families. These work experiences would soon prove invaluable, when her son Jeremy was born and diagnosed with autism. Living in Paris, France, at the time, where the only treatment on offer was psychoanalysis, Chantal’s struggle to find appropriate treatment for her son led them to move to England and eventually to the United States. Chantal used her expertise and experience to write six books, and her award-winning book, “Autism Spectrum Disorders” (Penguin, 2004) has been re-written with updated material as the field of autism study grows. Jeremy, now a Torrey Pines High School alum and speaker for autism, has been writing editorials and appearing on television, presenting his life perspective with autism. What is the traditional Little League season for DMALL?
Are there any changes this season that players need to be aware of?
Spring is the traditional Little League season. Practices started late January/early February, with games beginning around March 1 and finishing late May or early June with post season tournaments. All-Star tournaments may continue through August culminating with a trip to Williamsport, PA and the opportunity to play in the Little League World Series.
Little League International make changes every year to enhance the experience. One change made very recently was the opportunity for players to play in either the little league where they live or where their school is located.
What is the goal of DMALL as a whole?
What is the history behind Del Mar American Little League (DMALL)? Del Mar Little League started in 1961 as an all volunteer program for our local area youth. Little League International is celebrating its seventyfifth anniversary this year. In 1964, Little League was granted and signed into law by the President Johnson, a Congressional Charter of Federal Incorporation. No other sports organization has been so recognized.
What is the make-up of the 2014 DMALL? More than 350 boys and girls age 5 to 14 will participate in DMALL this season.
There are four main goals right now for DMALL. The first goal is to provide a leadership program for our kids, teach them the merits of teamwork, and learn some baseball skills at the same time. Important life lessons are learned through practice, hard work, taking direction and teamwork. A second goal is to stress the importance of academics. DMALL recognizes student-athletes at its Academic All-American ceremony at the end of the season. A third goal is to continue to grow our junior umpire program, led by Doug Means. This program provides an excellent leadership opportunity for current and former players ages 11 to 18. Most recently Josh Bernstein, 18, has benefited greatly from the umpire program led by the umpiring expert himself, Doug Means. Lastly, DMALL has a goal of making Saturdays at Ashley Falls a place for families throughout the community to gather for the day to watch baseball games, eat at our Snack Shack, and watch kids of all ages come together and play.
What do the league registration fees cover? Annual fees cover equipment, field preparation, uniforms, baseballs, umpires and any other necessary items required to provide a safe, rewarding and fun experience.
How does a business or family become a sponsor? Sponsors are a major part of the lifeblood of little league. It is very easy to become a sponsor. All you need to do is go to our website, www.delmaramerican.org and click on the sponsorship tab. There are many different levels of sponsorship. It’s a great opportunity for local merchants to get exposure and, of course, to give back to the community that supports them so generously. Please contact Mike Maronde, sponsorship coordinator at sponsors@delmaramerican.org for further information.
How does DMALL run such an organized program? The seventeen member board works very hard at providing a smooth running program for the community. Each board member is responsible for multiple duties. The board meets once a month but individually works countless hours in between meetings. This is truly a working board. The dedication and professionalism that each board member brings to the table is very impressive. Every board member believes in the importance of community works hard to ensure the community feels connected. Some board members continue to serve long after their kids have aged out of the program.
Who are the current DMALL sponsors? There are many sponsors at different levels from merchants to generous individual families. There are many tremendous sponsorship opportunities available every season providing community wide exposure.

Does DMALL hold any fundraisers? We really don’t, though it is something we should consider in the future. DMALL relies solely on annual player fees and the generosity of our sponsors.
How could a community member volunteer their time to help DMALL?
What is your role as DMALL president?
One can volunteer at the board level and/or the team level. The easiest way to volunteer is to contact a board member or the team manager. A volunteer form must be completed which is found on the website.
What is the biggest challenge that DMALL faces? Today’s kids have so many sporting options and diversions. Competitive sports teams, regardless of the sport, can and do play year round thanks to our wonderful climate. Kids can only do so much and therefore, something’s got to give. It’s somewhat discouraging when a player doesn’t continue for one reason or another.
My role as president is to oversee the whole program and assist each coordinator in making sure this is the best season ever.
What is the most rewarding thing of being DMALL president? The most rewarding aspect and motivation for me is giving back to the community and seeing kids not only develop their baseball skills but learn the importance of sportsmanship, working hard setting and achieving goals that will hopefully last a lifetime.
Please provide us with DMALL Opening Day information. Opening Day will be Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Ashley Falls, DMALL’s home field. Please refer to the website for exact time.

What is the traditional Little League season for DMNLL? Spring is the traditional little league season. Practices started late January /early February with games beginning around March 1 and finishing late May or early June with post season tournaments. All-Star tournaments may continue through August culminating with a trip to Williamsport, PA and the opportunity to play in the Little League World Series.
What is the goal of DMNLL as a whole?
What is the make-up of the 2014 DMNLL?
The goal is to provide a leadership program for our kids, teach them the merits of teamwork, and learn some baseball skills at the same time. Important life lessons are learned through practice, hard work, taking direction and teamwork. A second goal is growing our junior umpires program, led by Mike Gormley. It provides an excellent leadership opportunity for current and former players ages 11 to 18. My oldest son, Josh, 18, has benefitted greatly from the umpiring program led by the umpiring expert himself, Doug Means, who we lost to Del Mar American this year. A third goal equally as important as the others, is our “All American Academic Program” encouraging academic excellence.
More than 300 boys and girls age 5 to 14 will participate in Del Mar National Little League this season.
Are there any changes this season that players need to be aware of?
What is the history behind Del Mar National Little League (DMNLL)? Del Mar Little League started in 1961 as a nonprofit all volunteer program for our local area youth. Our parent organization, Little League International, is celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary this year. In 1964, Little League was granted and signed into law by President Johnson, a Congressional Charter of Federal Incorporation. No other sports organization has been so recognized.
Little League International make changes every year to enhance the experience. One change made very recently was the opportunity for players
to have the choice to participate in the little league where they live or where their school is located.
All you need to do is go to our website, www.delmarnational.org and click on the “documents” tab. There are many different levels to sponsor. It’s a great opportunity for local merchants to get exposure and of course to give back to the community that supports them so generously. For further information, please contact Mike Feinman, sponsorship coordinator at sponsors@delmarnational.org.
How does DMNLL run such an organized program? The fifteen member board works very hard at providing a smooth running program for the community. Each board member is responsible for multiple duties. The board meets once a month but individually works endless hours in between meetings. This is truly a working board. The dedication and professionalism that each board member brings to the table is very impressive but it makes one reflect on the importance of community and how lucky our area is to have such selfless members dedicate their precious time while serving on the board and continues even after leaving the board assisting new board members.
Who are the current DMNLL sponsors? There are many sponsors at different levels including law firms, medical practices, local merchants and very generous individual families. There are many tremendous sponsorship opportunities available every season providing community-wide exposure.
Does DMNLL hold any fundraisers? We really don’t, though it is something we should consider in the future. DMNLL relies solely on annual player fees and the generosity of our sponsors.

Competitive sports teams regardless of the sport can and do play year round thanks to our wonderful climate. Kids can only do so much and therefore something’s got to give. It makes me sad when a player doesn’t continue for one reason or another, though, I understand completely.
What is the most rewarding thing of being DMNLL president? The most rewarding aspect and motivation for me is giving back to the community that has given so much to my three boys that have gone through the little league program. Little League was such a big part of my childhood and seeing the DMNLL players having fun brings back personal memories that surprisingly don’t seem so long ago.
What is your role as DMNLL president? My role as president is to oversee the whole program and assist each coordinator in making sure this is the best season ever. Larry Jackel, past president and current treasurer, is instrumental in helping me carry out those duties. He has made many positive changes the past few years as president which makes my job simple (or tougher?) in just trying to improve on them.
Please provide us with DMNLL Opening Day information. Opening day will be Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Sage Canyon, DMNLL’s home field. We have a great program planned that hopefully gets the players fired up for the season. A Majors game, DMNLL’s most competitive division, caps off the festivities. It’s a wonderful community experience. Please refer to www.delmarnational.org for exact time and details.

Move Over, “Bachelor”!
D
ating shows have become all the rage on television, but here in 92130, a local production company has created a unique perspective on the genre: a San Diego-based, San Diegofilmed show with real San Diego residents. It’s called “The Romance”, coming to a television near you in February on Channel 4. In addition to casting local contestants, men and women on “The Romance” won’t fly to Bora Bora or Tahiti on second dates or live in a mansion, they will not all look like young models or get a marriage proposal by the end of the final episode. “Real life is trying to find that special someone and date while you’re doing the normal things that people do every day,” said creator, executive producer and Carmel Valley resident Ken Gora, who heads Branded Entertainment. “It seems very unreal that cameras are following you everywhere in a mansion and you’re going on these dream dates and you’re laying by the swimming pool every day. Gee, I could fall in love with a grizzly bear in those circumstances.” “The Romance” will run for six episodes, following six men and sixteen women on a variety of dates. The dating contestants aren’t alone either. They will be getting feedback from a group of three judges including Kimberly Seltzer, a therapist and dating coach, and Elle
France, a Rancho Santa Fe matchmaker. Ken Gora, with his doctorate in psychology and a background in counseling, recruitment and a book on relationships, also serves as a judge and host. The television series will also feature many local San Diego businesses, including some right here in Carmel Valley. Beauty Bundles, Del Mar Floral, Mia Francesca, Searsucker, and Snooze, among others, will be making appearances.

Giving Pets a Second Chance
L
ast Chance At Life Rescue (LCAL) is an animal rescue and adoption program based in Oceanside, specializing in canine and bird adoptions. They take in animals from all over San Diego, including those facing euthanasia because of medical or behavorial issues. For these forgotten pets, this place is their “Last Chance At Life.” LCAL started as the Boxers N Birds rescue back in 1986 when Lisa Hamilton was rescuing dogs and taking them into her home. She joined Mission Animal Hospital in 1988 with Dr. Robert Cartin and began taking in more medical needs animals. When Mission Animal & Bird Hospital moved to Oceanside, Dr. Cartin let the rescue use the old facility as their adoption center. The name of the rescue was then changed to Last Chance at Life. LCAL rescues animals from other counties as well, such as Cassidy, a Doberman Pinscher from Riverside County. Cassidy’s broken leg was going to be amputated, but was exited to LCAL’s care to see if his leg could be saved. Although Cassidy’s LCAL vets agreed that it had to be amputated, Cassidy has been doing well, adapting quickly with a missing leg. LCAL is currently searching for a home for Cassidy. Through the efforts of the LCAL Thrift Store and fundraising, they will continue to grow. Last year saw over 200 pets adopted and they want to make an even bigger dent this year. Visit their website, www.lastchanceatlife.org, for more information on adoptions and rescues. ¢

It was truly love at first sight. Jeff and I celebrated our three month anniversary, and I just moved to San Diego. Looking forward to spending the rest of our lives together.”

Friendly Convenience with Personalized Service by LINDA FRABL | photos by Tyler McElhaney
M
ost of us have waited forever to see a doctor, and then been forced to wait even longer for our prescriptions. Although there are no shortages of big-box, chain-store pharmacies, their usual delays with getting prescriptions filled make us long for a magical place where a friendly, knowledgeable pharmacist can quickly fill our orders; or better yet, have them delivered directly to our homes. Lo and behold, Carmel Valley Pharmacy, owned by Tarek El-Ansary, is the answer to our prayers. Having recently opened in December of 2013, Carmel Valley Pharmacy was borne out of the neighborhood’s need for friendly convenience. Carmel Valley resident Tarek explained, “I’ve heard many neighbors express their extreme frustration when dealing with the chain pharmacies in the area. They would compare it to going to the DMV – ‘a necessary but negative experience.’ When they found out I owned and ran a pharmacy in East County, they wished I would open a pharmacy here. This community clearly understands that small businesses give much more personalized service than the chain stores.” Thanks to Carmel Valley Pharmacy’s warm and peaceful environment, customers are instantly put at ease. In addition, they are shocked at how fast their prescriptions are ready, not to mention the

one-on-one helpfulness. Tarek emphasized, “We know that your time is priceless and we focus on getting your prescription done in less than ten minutes. We also understand that patients have probably spent much of their day waiting to see their doctor and might not feel their best. With that level of empathy, we approach each patient with a very high level of compassion. Overall we know that our success is in providing a level of customer service that far exceeds our competition.” The pharmacy service includes offering specialized “compounded” medications, which are necessary when a medication’s strength, dosage form or ingredient is no longer available by the drug manufacturers. Tarek said, “We can compound the medication to the exact specification of your doctor; that also includes veterinary medicine for pets.” Carmel Valley Pharmacy also provides a same-day home delivery service, and accepts all major insurance plans. Tarek concluded, “I am very eager to learn the needs of the community, whether it be specific herbal medications, immunizations, sport injury rehab or prevention, or gift/boutique items.” So the next time you need your prescription filled, visit this wonderful new pharmacy, and enjoy the courteous-and-quick attention you’ll receive.

Aaron Acosta:
Student, Star, and “Slinger”
A
aron Acosta is a busy kid on his way to stardom. He keeps up with homework as an eighth grader at Carmel Valley Middle School, is recording an album with Chino Nuñez, and got to star in the San Diego-based film, “The Slingers — The Kickball Movie”. When asked what it was like to work on his first film, Aaron said, “It is a different kind of acting [from theatre]. You have to act more with your face and eyes. Plus, you do every scene several times from different angles.” The Slingers introduces Aaron in the lead role of Bradley, a teenager who, with his sister Brianna (played by Emma Rose Maloney), rallies a team of underprivileged kids to take on the world of organized kickball. The entire cast was assembled primarily from San Diego County kids and actors. The film was written and directed by David E. Ruiz, who is also from San Diego. Jody Taylor, Aaron’s publicist from Sixty5 Media, said, “One thing I can tell you, working as the film’s and Aaron’s publicist, is Aaron really works hard ... this kid made sacrifices over the summer during filming. When his friends were going to the beach, the movies, skateboarding, etc., Aaron was doing table reads, rehearsals, and shooting the film.” She added, “He was very focused, and he came to set more prepared than some veteran adult actors I have personally worked with.” That’s some high praise, and well-deserved for Aaron.
You can find Aaron’s first two songs on iTunes: “Dream Lover” and “Betcha By Golly Wow.” Dream Lover was originally recorded by Bobby Darin, and Aaron’s version has a Bachata twist. Betcha by Golly Wow is a salsa version of the R&B classic originally recorded by The Stylistics. As for The Slingers, keep an eye on their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/thekickballmovie, for future screenings and events.

:::: HEALTHY LIVING
NEW YEAR
RESOLUTION:\give up my
ALLERGIES
F
or most people who have lived with allergies their entire life, it is difficult to believe that they could simply get rid of them. However, according to Dr Kusum Sharma who is board certified in Allergy and Immunology, this is actually possible. According to her, when someone is allergic to something, they have the following three options: 1. They could avoid what they are allergic to. This prevents an allergic reaction from happening. This approach is commonly used for drug and food allergies. Since other effective drugs are available, doctors simply avoid the drug a person is allergic to. People allergic to certain foods avoid those particular foods. People with cat or dog allergies can try to avoid exposure to them. However it becomes difficult with other environmental allergens like pollens and dust mites that are found everywhere. 2. They could take medications to suppress the effects of the allergic reaction. For seasonal allergies and asthma, most people take this approach. They take over the counter allergy medications or prescription medications given by their doctor. Often the symptoms are not completely
controlled and people learn to live with their allergies. Also, this entails taking medications daily for prolonged periods of time. 3. They could “give up” their allergies by being de-sensitized to the particular allergens. This third option allows an allergic person to decrease their sensitivity to allergy causing substances, so that exposure to the offending allergen (pollen, mold, dust mites, animal dander, stinging insects, foods like milk and egg, drugs, etc.) will result in fewer/less severe or no symptoms. Desensitization is commonly done for medications like aspirin, penicillin and other drugs when the particular drug will be of benefit and no substitutes are available. Recently, desensitization to egg and milk has been possible in many cases. Venom immunotherapy allows for desensitization to bee, wasp and hornet venoms. “Allergy shots” or immunotherapy is a similar approach that desensitizes to seasonal allergens. This approach works in 8590% of allergic patients. It typically takes about 6-8 months of weekly injections to achieve the final or maintenance dose. This seems to discourage many people. However, Dr Sharma has devised what she

calls “Cluster Immunotherapy- AKANE protocol” so she can get the same results by giving fewer injections over a significantly shorter duration, typically 2-3 months. Once the maintenance dose is reached, it is continued once a month for 3-5 yrs. “Results are astounding” says Dr Sharma, “I see sneezing, dripping, stuffiness and even snoring disappear.” She is very excited about all the new research in this area. Sublingual immunotherapy or allergy drops delivered in the mouth instead of the allergy injections are now being reviewed by the FDA. For people with just grass allergy, a grass tablet is being formulated to take just before grass season. If you suffered from allergies last year, this is your time to take action. Start this year with a new goal. Find out what causes your allergies, and which of the above three approaches is best for you.

Family Finances:
Q&A with a Financial Advisor by Richard H. Fogg, CFP®
W
hen family and finances intersect, things can often get complicated. Asking for help and receiving advice before making important decisions can make a big difference in how you feel about your finances. Here are answers to some common family finance questions:
Q
I’m considering contributing to a Health Savings Account rather than a traditional health insurance plan. What should I think about before making the switch?
A
An HSA is a low premium, high deductible plan that allows you to save money tax-free for your healthcare expenses. An HSA can be a good option for you and your family if you don’t visit the doctor often. Before you sign up, be sure to calculate the true amount of what you may spend annually. Calculate how much you’re willing and able to put into your HSA account and stick to a systematic deposit plan.
Q
My 16 year old daughter is a dedicated student and is involved in several extra-curricular activities. She doesn’t have much free time, but I think working part-time is important for teens. Should I encourage her to get a job?
A
Q
I want to teach my children good money management skills. How old should they be before I start paying them allowance?
A
them to make their own decisions about what to purchase with their money, and encourage them to save for pricier “wants” by creating a chart in which they can track their progress. If they choose to spend their savings before reaching their goal, explain the trade-offs that come with making that choice.
You can begin teaching your children about money as soon as they’re old enough to put coins in their piggy bank. One approach is to start by giving them small amounts of money in exchange for chores or tasks. Allow
Working part-time goes a long way in teaching young adults the value of money and helping them get a jump-start on their post-grad resumé. If she has friends that work or if she really wants the extra spending money, she might voluntarily choose to give up an extracurricular in favor of a job. If you expect her to help fund her college education expenses, it’s crucial that you explain this to her now so she can make trade-offs in her busy schedule and begin saving money.
Q
My sister has always been financially irresponsible and keeps asking me if I can loan her money. When should I cut her off?
A
If the money you’re lending to your sister is jeopardizing your current – or future – financial situation, you need to have a conversation with her right away because the financial health of you and your family is most
important. By prioritizing your own financial goals and stability, you may even have the ability to comfortably help family members in the future. If your sister is really in need of help with necessities or to fund an unexpected short-term expense, consider creating a written document containing how much you’ve lent to her, and under what terms. Use it to clarify your expectations of when and how you anticipate her paying you back.
Q
I want to start taking better care of my finances. What kinds of resolutions should I set for myself to begin my money makeover?
A
Looking at the big picture is the best thing you can do to evaluate your money management. Take time to step back and consider what you’re really trying to achieve overall. Make a list of all your financial obligations and goals – from daily expenses to long-term plans. Then start prioritizing, being honest with yourself about the “need to haves” like retirement savings and “nice to haves” like tuition paid in full for your college-bound child. Also re-evaluate the products and policies you already have in place and ensure you’re making the most of options like your employer’s 401(k) match. Lastly, develop an emergency savings for minimizing the amount of risk that unexpected events like an illness or divorce, will have on your financial security.

2013 Falcon Sports Spring Preview
I
t’s going to be another championship spring at Torrey Pines High School. Many of our athletic programs are poised to repeat as CIF section champions. Under the leadership of Coach Jono Zissi, the boys lacrosse team looks to return as one of the top ranked teams in the West. The lacrosse team has five players who have committed to college programs. The girls lacrosse program is coming off of a strong finish last year and is expected to be competitive. Coach Kaitlin Swagart’s team will be experienced, as many of the starters are returning.
Our spring programs have outstanding individual athletes. The boys track team will be led by senior Tal Braude, who won a state championship earlier in the year. The boys tennis team has individual standout and CIF individual champion, Taylor Fritz. Falcon baseball is teambuilding and building a new state-of-the-art batting facility. Head baseball coach, and former MLB star Kirk McCaskill, has assembled an impressive coaching staff. Softball Coach John Moore and his championship team looks toward a third consecutive title. :::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
The Surging Carmel Valley Real Estate Market
E
veryone has been talking about the recent surge in Carmel Valley real estate, and now the numbers support the claim. 2013 was a banner year for sales in Carmel Valley with an 18% gain over 2012. The most significant rise was in the $1M to $2M price range; 153 sales in 2012 compared to 226 in 2013. However, under $1M was steady and will continue to be a desirable price point for transplants. What does this mean? Buyer confidence in the value of homes and, of course, the continued low interest rates. Clearly, we know how desirable Carmel Valley is to professionals because of the outstanding schools, proximity to high-tech companies, location and lifestyle. Recently, we received an inquiry from a prospective buyer wanting to relocate from Nevada. They searched the internet looking for the best school district to transfer their children into, and Carmel Valley was at the top of the list! They knew nothing about the area and relied upon our expertise. Hopefully, they’ll be moving into their new
home in the spring and enrolling their children into one of the many fine elementary schools in Del Mar Unified and Solana Beach School Districts and outstanding middle and high schools in San Dieguito High School District.. With Qualcomm, Northrop-Grumman, Lockheed, and several other San Diego companies hiring, the Carmel Valley real estate market should continue to soar. Inventory is very low and, there are still many buyers. Those two factors make it the right time to sell... It’s a seller’s market! Call us 858-243-5278 for in depth market valuation of your home. ¢
