Oakwood Escrow Wishes You a

Happy Holiday Season ! SOME HOLIDAY TIPS 1. Stay with one theme and style for your holiday decorating. It makes shopping for decor easier and makes your space feel professionally finished. 2. Let your nose know it’s the holiday season. Place potpourri and scented candles near your entry and throughout your house. Or, better yet, bake some cookies shortly before guests arrive. 3. Choose two to three colors for your holiday palette and keep it consistent. Multiple color palettes can be too distracting. Try silver, blue and white or red, gold and brown. 4. Create an inexpensive family tradition that involves the kids. Purchase a ready-made wreath of greens then gather items to decorate it. Use pine cones, ribbons, crystals, feathers, beaded garland or homemade paper snowflakes. 5. Give your space a different look and feel for this special time of year. Rearrange your furniture so the focal point is the fireplace or wherever you hang stockings. If you don’t have a fireplace, arrange the furniture to create the best layout for cozy conversations. 6. Colored lights can be costly if you change your color palette from year to year. Stick with white lights; they can be used with any color scheme. 7. Start investing in a collection - something that can continue to grow through the years and can be passed on to the next generation. Check out online auction sites for vintage decorations. 8. Use lots of candles. Nothing makes a room feel warmer and more inviting than candlelight. 9. Bring the holiday celebration into every room. Kitchens and bathrooms are a great place to put scented candles and smaller seasonal knickknacks. 10. The holiday season is definitely one time where “less is more” does NOT apply. Have fun and do it up big!

Traditions.

A

s we approach the holiday season, you can’t help but reflect back on family traditions and memories that most of us have been fortunate to grow up with. It’s very easy to turn on the “autopilot” and get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life – our work schedules, house duties, playing taxi driver for our children. The list goes on and on... I recently attended a business seminar in Las Vegas. A topic that came up frequently throughout the seminar was family traditions and memories – specifically childhood memories. To be honest, until I was asked to recall and analyze some of my best memories over the past 39 years, I had not given it much technical thought. Sure, everyone has memories – some that they hold dear to their heart and some that they may want to forget. But forcing myself to take a trip down memory lane proved to be a rewarding and enlightening exercise. I believe that there are a few types of memories (generally speaking) that are welcomed and tend to stand out in most people’s minds – the good memories and the memories surrounding family traditions. I can easily pull up the good memories. Childhood sports. Playing with friends in the neighborhood. Video game marathons. derrick breaux Family vacations and road trips. Awesome cardboard box forts! Publisher But one of the things that is easy to overlook is the stability that comes along with traditions. Most of our family traditions involved holidays. Growing up, there were always certain things that I could rely on. To name a few, I knew exactly what we were going to be doing on Christmas Eve every year. I knew what food would be served for Thanksgiving. I loved the annual family camping trip – always at the same lake and campsite. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I definitely found peace in the consistency that came along with these traditions. My son made me feel good the other day when we were discussing our upcoming holiday plans. My wife and I were bouncing a few different ideas around when he blurted out, “but we always cook gumbo on Halloween and Christmas Eve!” In his mind, I’m sure the little things like cooking a family favorite on certain days of the year are just “what we do.” But they are actually so much more than that. I intend to continue with as many of the traditions that have been passed along to me, and I hope that one day my kids will be able to reflect on these traditions and choose to carry them on and introduce them to their own families. To family, creating memories, and carrying on with great traditions. Happy Holidays! Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Love on a Leash

The Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy by ROBIN KAUFMAN | President, San Diego Love On A Leash

W

hat do libraries, schools, hospitals, veterans facilities, domestic violence centers, and court rooms all have in common? They, along with a number of other places, all receive pet therapy visits from Love On A Leash (LOAL), the Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy organization. Love On A Leash is a national, non-profit, all volunteer organization established in 1984. The goal is simple – to bring smiles and comfort to those who are visited by a pet therapy animal. Pet therapy animals are privately owned and can be a dog, cat, or rabbit. The dogs can be pure breeds, mixed breeds, and come in all sizes. LOAL does not raise and train dogs to be service or companion animals. To become a fully certified LOAL pet therapy team, dogs must have basic obedience skills and a good temperament. After graduating from a six-week pet therapy training class and passing a control evaluation test (as well as passing the Canine Good Citizen test), the dogs and their humans must then complete a minimum of 10 supervised visits. For cats and rabbits, a veterinarian must certify their health and temperament. After initial certification, those pets must also complete a minimum of 10 supervised visits. There are three LOAL chapters in San Diego County – San Diego Love On A Leash (sandiegoLOAL@aol.com), which covers the north county inland areas; San Diego North County Chapter (mgleisberg@cox.net), which covers the north county coastal areas; and the San Diego Central Chapter (sandiegocentralloal@gmail.com), which covers everything in-between. To learn more about Love On A Leash, visit www.loveonaleash.org or San Diego Love On A Leash’s website at www.sandiegoLOAL.com. 

CELEBRATING MUSIC CDMES Teacher Recently Awarded Music Honor by AMY LEHRER | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

R

ecently, Cinda Peck, the music teacher for Carmel Del Mar Elementary School (CDMES), was honored with the 2013 Profile in Music Award from the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory. She revealed, “I was nominated by a former student, and that makes it even more special.” From a very early age, Cinda enjoyed music. In second grade, she studied piano, added the clarinet in fifth, vocal music in junior high and participated in band and orchestra through high school. She graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Music Education and Music Therapy and began as a part-time music aide at Del Mar Hills. To secure a permanent position, Cinda obtained her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Point Loma University. She began as a sixth grade substitute at CDMES before accepting a fifth grade teaching position. Three years later, when the district opened up music positions to credentialed teachers, Cinda began teaching music full time. Cinda shared, “I love CDMES just as I love our neighborhood. It’s where my family grew up and my loyalties will always be.” Cinda Peck and her husband, Rod, moved to Creek Park Estates, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Carmel Valley, 28 years ago, back when chaparral and dirt roads abounded. They’ve enjoyed watching their two children, neighborhood, schools and community grow. Hoping her students remain dreamers and believers of themselves, Cinda’s goal has been to give them a life-long love of music. Each year some lessons are brought to performance level, where family and friends can celebrate successes. CDMES students attend dress rehearsals, which fosters community. Students support each other, and great performances often bring out new “stars.” She reminds her students to give her front row seats and back stage passes if they ever become famous. Cinda would like to thank the many parents who have participated in fundraisers that allowed the purchase of stage lighting, a quality sound system and most of the instruments the students use. Her husband Rod added Cinda worked tirelessly to include every child, often made costumes and scenery, was awarded teacher of the year in 2003, and sang the National Anthem at several Padres games. For fun, Cinda attends musical theater performances, sings in the La Jolla Symphony Chorus, gardens, and entertains family and friends. She even water skis at least once a year to prove she still can! ¢

The CCA girls varsity field hockey team were honored to be the first ones to use the new artificial turf field for their game against San Dieguito Academy following the ceremony. By next year, CCA plans to also add two new outdoor fields for baseball, and two for softball. Karen Dillen enthusiastically stated in her speech, “It used to be that when we traveled, the parents of the other team would ask, ‘Canyon Crest Academy – where is that?’ They’ll remember us now!” 

T

he 2012-2013 season for the Sharks GU16 Elite soccer team was one that teams dream about and rarely get to experience. They collected four State and Regional titles on their way to winning the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship in Overland Park, KS. This is only the third team in San Diego to win a National Championship since it began in 1935. The 19 girls who make up this extraordinary team are juniors and seniors in ten different high schools throughout San Diego County, Riverside and Orange Counties. Coach Felicia Kappes took over as coach at U11 late in 2007. Five of these girls remain together on this championship team. Coach Felicia reflects “I have seen them grow up in front of me, from little girls to strong independent driven young women. They are bonded liked no other team I have coached in my 23 years of coaching. They are a family and protect each other like a family would. They sacrifice everything for each other on and off the field. I am just so proud of these girls.” Member of the teams are: Captains Hailey Harbison (Sr), Gianna Montini (Jr), Shelby Lee (Jr); Seniors: Mari Briggs, Dominique DeCoy, Angel Meriwether; Juniors: Jennifer Ballez, Rachel Carroll, Crystal Cordova, Huli De Armas, Maegan Gibson, Brooklyn Gonzalez, Hannah Keogh, Zisi Komar, Melissa Lowder, Kirsten McBeain, Natalie Saddic, Jordan Sanders, Sam Staab, and Sydney Wooten. The 2012-2013 season record was 36 – 1 – 2 with 120 goals scored and allowing only 18. 

FAV :

W

hen Kiara McNulty and Sophia LeRose met at Horizon Preschool as five year olds, no one would have predicted back then that these now eighth graders would have so much in common. Both have twin brothers, both played competitive soccer together for the Sharks and Surf soccer clubs, both have continued to compete in their respective sports of volleyball and lacrosse, and both are straight “A” students. When their twin brothers joined TVIA, a volunteer organization for young men, and Sophia and Kiara could not find a similar organization for themselves, they decided to form Female Athlete Volunteers, also known as FAV. The goal of the organization was simple – no expensive dues, no fancy events, invite friends who also play sports and schedule a variety

of events to give back to organizations around San Diego. FAV started out in 2012 with 25 members, and has grown to almost 50 members in grades 7 through 9, with the majority of girls attending either Carmel Valley or Earl Warren middle schools, and Torrey Pines or Canyon Crest High Schools. Their projects have included feeding the homeless, sorting food at Feeding America, creating fall crafts with seniors, hosting a holiday party for at-risk children, and even donating supplies and gift bags to an orphanage in Zimbabwe. FAV has a bigger goal for 2013, they are actively trying to raise $8,000 to partner with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and support the dream of a local girl battling leukemia and grant her wish to visit Walt Disney World. For more information on FAV, send an email to favteenkorps@gmail.com. 

They track their hours and commitments, and attend educational lectures and workshops. This year, TVIA boys attended a lecture by Wai John Wai, one of “The Lost Boys of Sudan” profiled by 60 Minutes. He is also the founder of the Sudanese American Youth Center in San Diego. “Upon hearing about his difficult childhood journey out of Sudan, I came to the realization that my journey is effortless, even for the faint of heart!” said Adam Alsadek, a Torrey Pines High School junior and class vice president. “His story really spoke to me and compelled me to help those that don’t have it as easy.” Keenan Salvati, a senior at Francis Parker High School, has joined the TVIA Leadership Council and is Chair of the group’s Karen Refugee Committee. “Working with the Karen Refugees gives me a rewarding sense of community service,” said the soccer and lacrosse star. “Tutoring and helping these kids who are all refugees from Burma is very gratifying; it’s rewarding to see them progress and learn.” “TVIA brings together boys from a variety of backgrounds. Our chapter includes students from different high schools; public, private, and homeschooled,” said SD1 Chapter President Susan Lyon. “I know these boys will graduate and go out into the world with a better sense of how it should work and be inspired to give back.” 

any students spend their time doing homework or sports, possibly playing a video game here or there. Tayah Bolt, in addition to maintaining a 4.0 GPA at Torrey Pines High School, bakes cupcakes. And more cupcakes. And more and more cupcakes, staying up until midnight on many nights for orders to be delivered the next day. A high school entrepreneur? No, Tayah Bolt is a high school humanitarian. A humanitarian from way back, who began baking cupcakes in fifth grade in exchange for people donating to Toys for Thailand, an organization that provides goods and services for orphaned, abandoned, and refugee children in Thailand. “I have been traveling internationally since I was five,” Tayah shared. “It is hard to turn your back on poverty.” Tayah is facing it fully, and she’s spent her young life making a difference. She started by helping with fundraisers, selling tickets for raffles, but before she knew it people were asking her to

They kept asking, and she kept baking. “I have traveled to Thailand and seen orphanages with no running water, bedding, or enough food,” she explained. “Then we start helping and there is an amazing difference when we return next year.” Tayah has been able to raise enough money to send two Thai students to college, and also fund huge organic gardens in the orphanages. The children have enough to eat and then sell extra produce for other items they need. “To see an entire hillside Tayah Bolt is a high school covered with a magnificent garden humanitarian. A humanitarian and then see a sign from way back, actually, who reading ‘Tayah’s began baking cupcakes in fifth Garden’ all the way across the world is grade in exchange for people truly magical.” donating to Toys for Thailand. Tayah was awarded for her humanitarian work effort in Thailand for the Maehongson Province School District, and received a Certificate of Appreciation for her efforts to support Huay Pooling School from the Maehongson Education Association. Torrey Pines is a beloved place for Tayah, where she enjoys marine biology and teachers who are challenging but with a good sense of humor. If you see Tayah Bolt around town, go up to her and give her a big hug, because now you know how much she really cares. ¢

t was a very rewarding fall 2013 season for the female athletes at Canyon Crest Academy. Whether the girls were active in cross country, lacrosse, tennis or volleyball, there were many smiles to be shared as the season neared its conclusion. The girls varsity field hockey team was especially thrilled to have been the first ones to utilize CCA’s brand new turf field for their Academy Cup game in September, which was the same day the school held its ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the completion of its field and track renovation. ¢

Investing “For Fun”

A

fter sixteen years guiding individuals, families, and business investment strategies, I’ve discovered some investors think it makes sense for them to invest in a company because they like the products or services it offers. This thought often stems from their familiarity with the famous investment principle of legendary fund manager, Peter Lynch. Lynch advised to “Invest in what you know,” and doing so may make sense. After all, it can be fun and interesting to track the ups and downs of a company that makes or provides something you love. However, putting your money on the line isn’t necessarily the wisest move. No matter how much you think you know about a hobby, sport, product, or service, there are always factors that can blindside all but the most professional of investors and potentially put your savings at risk. Choosing where to invest can be complicated under the best of circumstances. Consider these factors if you’re considering investing in a specific stock: Know whether the company has solid financials, good leadership and enough new products or services on the horizon to remain competitive. This means you should be prepared to invest some serious research time getting answers to these types of questions. This may involve reading stacks of analyst reports, press releases, competitors’ annual reports, industry assessments, personnel resumes, and both company quarterly and annual earnings releases. You’ll also want to understand long-term objectives, marketing strategies, means of manufacturing and distribution, operations, pension obligations, and so forth. Track the stock you’re considering for a period of time to see if it swings wildly or remains steady. Also consider tracking it backwards for six months to determine the historical track record. Furthermore, while the gyrations of the company you’re interested in may match the S&P 500’s ups and downs, you should also dig into other factors that might cause this specific firm’s stock to rise or fall. For example, how are suppliers of their raw materials impacted by commodity market reactions to world events? And do tightening credit or fuel supplies affect this company’s

ability to develop new products or finance adequate inventory? Next, assess whether that stock is a good fit for your overall portfolio. Will it contribute to the diversification of your portfolio so you can better weather the market’s ups and downs? Always remember that diversification involves the right blend of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and CDs to help provide more consistent performance under a wide range of economic conditions. Of course you can try to buy the company’s stock as part of a well-diversified mutual fund. This will give you some ownership in the company while helping reduce your risk exposure. Again, ensure all your investments are in line with your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

a single stock and the high level of industry knowledge required to make adequate use of it, consider working with a financial professional to discuss your interests before you invest. He or she can help you identify the merits of such an investment and how it fits into your overall financial strategy. 

“NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT A SUBJECT, THERE ARE ALWAYS FACTORS THAT CAN BLINDSIDE ALL BUT THE MOST PROFESSIONAL OF INVESTORS AND POTENTIALLY PUT YOUR SAVINGS AT RISK.”

The list of questions you should be asking is endless. Exercise caution if hiccups appear to happen frequently and negatively impact the company’s stock. And consider that even if your research shows favorable outcomes, the stock still may not be a good buy. You should understand where the company’s stock falls relative to future earnings. Bottom line: Because of the amount of time it can take to find, weed through, and understand all this information about both

wo and a half years in Torrey Hills may not be a long time, but it’s long enough for the Dennis family to know they love 92130. Harry and Courtney Dennis focused on their three children when they chose the Carmel Valley community. “We moved to Carmel Valley for the amazing schools and lots of kids! It’s so great to have the same interests with other parents who share the same goals about education,” Harry explained. Harry, a graduate of University of Maryland, has worked as a lender for the last fifteen years, lending to those looking to buy or refinance a home. Courtney, a San Diego State alumni, is a stay-at-home mom for Hope, 7, Harrison, 5, and Parents: Community: Occupations: Children:

Hudson, 1, and volunteers at Ocean Air Elementary. A sense of community and a safe neighborhood were important to the Dennis family when they chose to settle in Torrey Hills. “We wanted to live where our kids could ride their bikes up and down the street,” Harry acknowledged. The family takes full advantage of the convenient location and youth activities. Hope cheerleads for Torrey Pines Pop Warner, Harrison plays Carmel Valley t-ball, and Hudson loves to swim. Living in Torrey Hills means they are never far from a long list of local activities. The family enjoys going to the racetrack in the summer, golfing and swimming at The Grand Del Mar, going out for Mexican food and spending time with friends. Outside of Carmel Valley, they travel often to visit family in Orange County. “We are never apart for birthdays and holidays,” Harry stated. Destinations also include Disneyland and the occasional parent get-away to Las Vegas. “We rarely stay at home!” said Harry. In and out of San Diego, the Dennis family is always on the go. With so many activities and Carmel Valley’s proximity to all of them, the Dennis family takes full advantage of 92130. ¢

Speak Out.” The presenter, Sensei Joey Larocque from Shaolin Kempo Arts, a professional martial arts educator and antibullying expert, covered a variety of topics. These included how to walk away from a bully, how to avoid being a bully, how to ask for help, and how to stand up for yourself with confidence. SDYS Flautist Receives High Honors

Omar Gaidarov, a junior at Torrey Pines High School, is the principal flautist for San Diego Youth Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia, and Chamber Orchestra groups. His performance of Carl Maria von Weber’s Fantasie on “Der Freischutz” astounded both judges and the audience at the Mingei International Museum recently, earning him a second place finish. “The SDYS 2013 Concerto Competition was a terrific experience for me. Of course, it was very challenging to learn ‘The Freischutz Fantasie’, but I really think it helped me evolve into a higher level of thought and a more sensitive musician,” said Omar. Omar never misses the opportunity to play at charity and community events over the years. His recent accomplishments have paved the way for him to perform at numerous well esteemed events, including San Diego Mainly Mozart festival, the Discovery Series Prelude for La Jolla Music Society and at the 2013 La Jolla Music Society summer master class with renowned LA Phil associate principal flute Catherine Ransom Karoly.

Bells of Freedom also provides emergency services year-round to military families, including vehicle donations and volunteering. If you would like to make a donation for “The Big Thank You”, the last day to drop off gifts is Dec. 4. Drop off gifts at the Bells of Freedom site or North County Dance Arts. For more information, visit www.bellsoffreedom.org. Dance Hearts and the Bells of Freedom Program does not have any paid directors, staff or volunteers, and 98% of all cash donations go directly to our young enlisted and their families.

ecember is upon us now, and here in San Diego, we can experience both the sun and the snow at once! It’s a ripe time for families to head up to the mountains for snow play, but for the more adventurous ones, it might be time to give those extreme snow sports a try. But before you parents go running to the yellow pages for ski instructors, consider the Blue Angels Youth Ski and Snowboard Program. At the family-run Blue Angels Youth Ski and Snowboard Program, the instructors are well-versed in teaching any skill level skier or snowboarder how to master the slopes. What makes this program so unique is the complete package: all skill levels are available, as well as luxury transportation, hearty meals, and students stay matched with the same coach for all five lessons. Kids ages seven to sixteen are grouped into well-supervised classes based on sport, age, and skill level, meaning no one gets left behind in the learning curve. And after twenty-two years of successful business, the Blue Angels have more than earned that strong reputation that brings back families year after year. Heidi Emery, the founder and owner of Blue Angels, has a lifetime of experience in the two sports to bring to the table, and her goal is to expose as many kids as possible to the wonders of skiing and snowboarding. The Blue Angels’ top priority is making sure that the kids have a fun time, making friends and forming a team-like bond. Heidi loves what she does, and she and the instructors take care of the kids like they were their own. Her “5 Saturday Program”, in which students are taught for five consecutive on-snow experiences, maximizes their learning and fun time in the snow with friends. Heidi stated, “A full day on the slopes, a hearty meal at lunch time and a relaxing ride to and from the resort make for a completely satisfying day on the slopes.” If you’re looking for more information and fun, head on over to the Pacific Sports Resort on Dec. 7 for the San Diego Spectacular Snow Day, where Blue Angels will be there with the latest information on their program, equipment, raffles for vacation packages, and more. 

THE NORTHWESTERN DIVISION COUPLES VALOR WITH SECURITY IN 92130 photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

As

residents of 92130, we have the privilege of living in one the country’s premier regions. At the heart of protecting and serving our great community is the Northwestern Division of the San Diego Police Department. With forty-eight sworn officers – plus administrative employees and volunteers – the division covers not only Carmel Valley, but also Sorrento Valley, Torrey Preserve, Del Mar Heights, North City, Torrey Highlands and Black Mountain Ranch. We talked with Manuel “Manny” Guaderrama, the division’s captain of police about the history and mission of the department, as well as some of the behind-the-scenes processes and effort that it takes to effectively serve 92130.

Q&A

with Manuel “Manny” Guaderrama, Northwestern Division Captain of Police

HOW LONG HAS THE NORTHWESTERN DIVISION POLICE STATION BEEN IN OPERATION, AND WHAT KINDS OF CHANGES HAVE OCCURRED SINCE IT OPENED? Northwestern Division has been in operation for over six years now, having opened March 10, 2007. It was built by funds from the Community of Carmel Valley Facilities Benefit Assessment, which are the fees paid by developers in the community. The facility is over 21,000 square feet, and the police garage is 8,193 square feet. The station was built to accommodate 113 employees. Over the past six years, we have grown from thirty-nine employees to ninety-five employees (which include forty-seven sworn Northwestern Division officers, twenty-four Retire Senior Volunteers Patrol (RSVP), and twenty-four officers assigned to the Telephone Report Unit). The RSVP program has grown from nine to twenty-four members. We now house the Centralized Telephone Reporting Unit (CTRU) where employees on light duty do reports that can be taken over the phone. In July 2010, Del Mar Highlands donated three fully equipped bicycles and a carrier to be used by patrol. Up and to that point, Northwestern was the only division that did not have patrol bicycles. The division now has twenty-nine active neighborhood watch groups and utilizes social media such as www.nextdoor.com and Facebook to communicate and interact with the community. Northwestern Division was one of the first few divisions to receive the new police vehicles.

PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT AREAS THE NORTHWESTERN DIVISION SERVICES. Northwestern Division covers over forty-one square miles and serves a population of over 70,000 residents. We serve the communities of Carmel Valley, Sorrento Valley, Torrey Preserve, Del Mar Heights, North City, Torrey Highlands, and Black Mountain Ranch.

AS THE CAPTAIN OF THIS DIVISION, WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? As the captain, I have overall responsibility of all police operations and services in Northwestern Division. This includes patrol operations, investigations, and juvenile services. I work with my staff, as well as the community, to ensure we are providing the best police services possible to the community.

Manuel Guaderrama At-A-Glance Name: Manuel Guaderrama Age: 54 Community of Residence: San Diego Professional Information: Police Captain Hobbies: Outdoor fitness activities

WHAT WAS YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND, AND HOW DID IT LEAD YOU TO YOUR CURRENT POSITION? I began my police career with the San Diego Police Department in 1983 and just recently celebrated my thirty year anniversary with the organization. As a patrol officer, and later as a patrol sergeant, I worked primarily at Central Division serving the Logan Heights and Downtown communities. As a supervisor and as a manager, I worked units such as the Gang Unit, Narcotics, SWAT, Homicide, and Internal Affairs. As a commanding officer, my first assignment was at Southern Division, which is geographically separated from the rest of the city and borders Mexico to the south. I have also been in charge of our Operation Support Division and the Traffic and Special Operations Division prior to coming to Northwestern.

WHAT IS THE MOST GRATIFYING ASPECT, FOR YOU, OF SERVICING THE 92130 AREA? Without a doubt, it is the appreciation we feel from the people in the community.

IS THERE ANYTHING ESPECIALLY UNIQUE OR NOTEWORTHY ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR POLICE STATION? As the newest substation of the department, we definitely have the nicest facility. We have a nice workout room, and with generous donations from the community, we were able to build a cross-fit gym.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU? Every day, I try to attend at least one patrol line-up. I meet with our detectives daily to be briefed on crime activity and the progress on the most serious cases. I usually have a number of meetings to attend, some within and some outside the organization. There is also a lot of information that crosses my desk each day, in various formats, that I must either handle personally or assign to a staff member. When there is time, I like to go in the field with a patrol officer, or I go out on my own and cover radio calls.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE IN THIS PARTICULAR REGION? The communities served by Northwestern Division are arguably the safest neighborhoods in the city of San Diego. Our biggest crime problems are property crimes and crimes of opportunity. Because this is safe area, people oftentimes do not safety precautions to protect their property. Many of our crimes involve unlocked doors or valuables left in plain view in vehicles, etc.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR THE 92130 RESIDENTS ABOUT ENSURING THEIR SAFETY?

and secure valuables in your trunk. Lock the door of your homes when you go out and get to know your neighbors. I am a big believer in our Neighborhood Watch Program.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON TYPES OF CALLS THIS DIVISION HAS BEEN RESPONDING TO? Like other divisions, we respond to all types of calls ranging from domestic disturbances, alarm calls, property crimes, and – while less than other divisions – acts of violence.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? As the captain of Northwestern Division, it is an honor to lead such a dedicated and committed group of law enforcement professionals. I believe the officers in this division truly want to provide the best service possible to the community, which makes my job easy and enjoyable.

IT SEEMS THE NORTHWESTERN POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS A FANTASTIC OUTREACH TO THE COMMUNITY, ESPECIALLY ITS FACEBOOK SITE. WAS THAT INTENTIONAL, AND DO YOU THINK IT HAS IMPROVED CRIME STATISTICS? We have the best community relations officer in the department in Officer Natalie Stone. Natalie has done a fantastic job reaching out to the community through a variety of ways, including through social networks such as Facebook and www.nextdoor.com. We are still evaluating the impact of this type of outreach on crime, but it definitely has had a positive effect on keeping the community informed.

In all communities, people must pay attention to their surroundings and report any suspicious activity. Lock your vehicles when parked

Many people utilize the CrossFit gym before and after their work shift from Northwestern Division, and throughout the department.

Institutionalizing a non-department sponsored program has been difficult due to personnel transfers and inconsistencies at other commands. Thankfully, the program has continued as new trainers have been afforded scholarships to become official trainers. The Northwestern Division has become a model for many police departments who have desired a grassroots-style CrossFit program that is not sanctioned by departmental regulations. The police academy now uses CrossFit exercises and is perpetuating the benefits of functional fitness.

HOURS TO THE COMMUNITY. San Diego’s Finest CrossFit will be hosting the United States Police & Fire Championship “Police & Fire Throwdown” in June 2014, which will be a CrossFit Competition. 

In addition to the “Yappy Hours” that Wag West organizes for their clients, they also use Twitter and Facebook to add to the social element of the business. “One rewarding aspect of the business is that our clients and their pets become our friends, as well as friends with each other. They enjoy interacting online or in person along with their pets,” said Adam. “More importantly though, is for the customer to know that we provide personalized care and love for each and every animal 24/7.” 

WAG WEST PET SERVICES – PERSONALIZED SERVICE WITH CONVENIENCE OF TECHNOLOGY photos by Tyler McElhaney

W

ag West, a pet care company that uses a smart phone app and GPS tracking for dog walking, was a long time in the making. “It stemmed from my lifelong passion for dogs, an entrepreneurial spirit, and my quest to find a dog walker or pet sitter that I could completely trust,” said owner Adam Zucker. “I wanted to combine my love of animals and the skills I learned after years in the corporate world, with a job that would allow me to be happy, and keep in shape as I got older.” After evaluating the industry, Adam realized that although his business background gave him an advantage over competitors, it wasn’t quite enough in terms of differentiating himself in the market and offering clients more value for their dollar. He turned to technology, and a business management tool that uses a GPS-based smart phone app for dog walking, as well as online scheduling and billing. The GPS tracking app allows clients to see in real time when and where their dogs are being walked, requiring full accountability on the part of the dog walker, and providing 100% peace of mind for the owner. Rachael Clark, a key professional at Wag West, was instrumental in allowing the business to expand so rapidly. She not only holds a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii, but is also a certified dog trainer. “Clients love having their dogs walked by a trainer,” said Adam. “It adds tremendous value and credibility to a traditional dog walk. Technology, online billing, scheduling, and GPS tracking help me keep track of my clients, their pets, and my staff. I can’t be everywhere, so technology allows me know exactly what’s going on with my business at any given moment,” he added.

M

any readers have heard of Lou Gehrig’s disease, but they may not know what it means. Amyotropic lateral lclerosis (ALS), is a devastating progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, with the degeneration of motor neurons which reach from the brain to the spinal cord and all the muscles throughout the body, leading to the eventual death of those neurons. This can lead to paralysis and sometimes death. Megan Spector didn’t know much about ALS either, until her Aunt Marjie was diagnosed. But once she learned, she undertook a plan to do anything she could to find a cure. An eleven year resident of Carmel Valley, thirteen year old Megan is on a mission. She started by organizing a concert to benefit the ALS Association of San Diego, which was attended by over 400 people and raised over $35,000.00 to help find a

cure for her aunt and others with ALS! It doesn’t end there. Megan and her family participated in the ALS Association of San Diego walk on Oct. 20, where Megan felt honored to sing the National Anthem to lead off the walk. Nov. 21 brought the ALS Basketball Classic: University of San Diego vs. San Diego Christian in the Jenny Craig Pavilion – the first inaugural Find a Cure game. And of course, if Megan could grant one wish to her community and the world at large, finding a cure for ALS would be it. When asked if the ALS Association needs volunteers, her response was, “Totally! Anyone can volunteer to help the organization. Ask for Tom Courtney, the chapter’s executive director-he is really helpful to those with ALS and their families.” Megan is a typical thirteen-year-old in many ways. She enjoys playing the piano and competing at soccer, going to the Del Mar Highlands and watching her number one TV show, Pretty Little Liars. Spending time with her family and extended family, along with her golden doodle Winston, are high on her list of favorite things to do. But she’s also one of our favorite humanitarians, with helping to find a cure for ALS at the top of the list. ¢

H

ow many times have you made the promise to yourself to make some changes in your home? Let’s clean it up, repaint the walls, build a gazebo, or buy a new dining set! Well, let’s hold the horses for a second. This coming new year doesn’t mean you need to make big purchases or strip your house to the bare bones to make way for some new feng shui. Sometimes it’s the tiniest change in details that make all the difference.

A Coat of Paint

Duct Tape Decorating

In my neighbor’s foyer was once a wooden standing cabinet. It was well-used and getting on in years, but she noticed that it was a bit of an eyesore. Instead of buying a whole new cabinet, she repainted it. Not just plain black or white though, but a beautiful shade of teal that was pleasing to the eye. Before you decide to replace the cabinets or an old armoire, consider a trip to the hardware store and have some fun finding a color that would complement the room. For an additional look, you can change the handles or knobs along with that new coat of paint.

Fuzzy Frames Winter’s coming, so here’s a way to make your pictures and living room look a little cozier. Grab some plain wooden frames, old or new, and a few balls of colored yarn. Detach the backing of the frame, leaving just the square. Take a string of yarn and start wrapping it around the frame until every space is covered, and glue the ends down. When re-attaching the back, it’ll be quite snug, but can be resized to fit.

I know you’re probably thinking “Duct tape? Really?”, but duct tape has become remarkably versatile lately. Not only is it the most durable, long-lasting tape around, but if you enter any craft store, there’s a whole plethora of different colors and patterns to choose from. Take a blank lamp shade or a vase and apply a layer of duct tape. With a pair of some sharp scissors, it’s easy to make abstract patterns, mix color blocks, and make a design all your own. Decorate the lamp shade with some colorful waves, or add some duct tape flowers to the base of the vase, to make them look pleasing. This is especially fun for kids of all ages.

HOLIDAY GIFTS

I

t’s difficult enough to find the perfect holiday gifts for friends and loved ones, but the task becomes even trickier if they have allergies or asthma. Allergist Dr. Kusum Sharma of AKANE Institute of Allergy, Asthma & Sleep Medicine, a member of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), suggests the following gift-giving tips:

nice, NOT

naughty

Go easy on edibles Food allergens lurk in all kinds of holiday goodies, from fruitcake (nuts) to cookies (wheat), so you’re better off avoiding food gifts. A better bet is a gift certificate to the recipient’s favorite restaurant. Pause at the pet shop Little ones may beg for a furry friend, but pet dander, saliva and urine from cats and dogs can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms, which will certainly put a damper on holiday cheer. Instead, consider a hypoallergenic stuffed animal that’s machine washable. Parents, remember to wash it weekly in hot water or freeze it overnight to rid it of allergy and asthma triggering dust mites. Go for the gold Jewelry may seem like a safe bet, but many people have a nickel allergy, frequently found in costume jewelry. If 18 karat gold is too much for your budget, consider an alternative gift like a watch. Be cautious of clothing A festive holiday sweater may be in style but if it’s made with angora (rabbit fur) or wool (including cashmere) your friend with

itchy eczema will feel miserable rather than fashionable. If you want to give clothing to someone with eczema, pick something made of 100 percent cotton.

Please, no perfumes Perfume, candles, soaps or lotions won’t pamper those who sneeze from strong scents or may even break out in a rash. Shop at stores that feature allergen free products or consider a department store gift certificate.

Pass on the poinsettia Nothing says the holidays like poinsettias, but it can mean trouble for those with a latex allergy (the plant is in the rubber tree family). Flowers in general can make people with allergies sniff and sneeze. If you insist on bestowing blooms, consider roses and orchids, which tend to be less of a problem for allergy sufferers. The best gift of all would be to let your allergy or asthma prone friends and loved ones know that their conditions are treatable. According to Dr Sharma, with recent advances, it is even possible to change ones immune system so they don’t react to the allergens. This is called Immunotherapy, commonly known as allergy shots. They have been around for a while but now there are faster, safer and more effective Immunotherapy modalities. Recently introduced sublingual Immunotherapy allows using liquid drops in the mouth instead of shots. As Dr Sharma puts it “the car you drive today looks nothing like the car your parents drove”. ¢

2013 Falcon Sports Winter Preview

W

e are excited to start another season of winter sports at Torrey Pines High School. If this year is anything like the last, we are looking forward to some great matchups. Last winter, our boys basketball team finished with some great games all the way to the semifinals. Our boys and girls soccer teams finished with winning records. Both soccer programs played well into postseason play and faced extremely competitive divisions. Many games were

decided in overtime shootouts. Our girls water polo program finished a remarkable season as the CIF Final runner up for a third year in a row. The TP wrestling program is enjoying the new leadership of coach Steve Roman. Coach Roman has worked all year to build the program, and we are excited to watch the team grow this winter. We also look forward to a new season for our girls basketball team. New head coach Denise Bennett will have a strong group of

T

he CCA athletic programs are excited as we head into the 2013-14 winter season. Last year, most of our winter programs advanced to the CIF playoffs and fared extremely well. Also, having have won more than a dozen league championships and two CIF titles during the past three years, the culture in our Athletic Department is now one of high expectations for our Ravens. Our boys and girls basketball and soccer teams, as well as our girls water polo and wrestling teams, are looking forward

to competing this winter. They have been working hard to prepare, and our athletes and coaches believe that they will have an outstanding season. As an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director, I am proud to say that CCA studentathletes dedicate themselves to becoming the best they can be, both in the classroom and in the sports arena. They work hard to represent not only themselves, but also their school, parents and community. It is an absolute pleasure to watch our student-

Why You Should Buy Your New Home Before 2014

If

you’re in the market to buy a home, the last quarter of 2013 is the time to do it. Why? Because interest rates are still at historic lows! Interest rates on fixed-rate loans are still appealing, and experts say it’s still cheaper to buy than rent. Some Lenders are also a little more lax with their loan qualification requirements this year. It’s cheaper to buy than rent. According to a 2012 Trulia Trends® study, “buying a home is 44 percent cheaper than renting in the 100 largest metro areas in the United States.” There is a significant price difference in total monthly costs with the lower interest rates. We’re currently in a buyers’ market – consider the benefits of buying a home instead. Even though home prices are creeping up, in certain neighborhoods, they have remained much lower than five years ago. Housing price trends vary significantly by location and even by neighborhood. It may be easier to get a mortgage. Credit unions and banks may be making it easier for some prospective buyers to qualify for a mortgage. Less stringent requirements and qualifying criteria may help some people finally get that home loan.

There is less competition from investors looking to buy and flip houses. Housing prices in some markets are increasing, making house flipping less attractive. This gives prospective homebuyers more inventory to choose from and the benefit of having less pressure to close a deal because of another pending offer. It’s time to invest in your future. Buying a home gives you a chance to start building equity, and investing in your future. If you sell your home in five or ten years, you should profit from the sale and invest that money elsewhere. If you’ve been dealing with rising rent or the hassles of costly moves, settling into a home can stabilize your housing expenses. Call us we can make it happen! ¢
