Official School of the Scripps Ballet Theatre

“Looking back on my childhood and my early development as an artist and individual, I realize how fortunate I was to start my dance training with Scripps Performing Arts. It was through their extremely nurturing, positive, fun, and more importantly noncompetitive program, that I never lost sight of my own personal reasons for dancing and never became tired of it. One of the most important things the Academy instilled in its’ students was that even though we were children, we could make a difference in the world. Although I am just one small being in this universe, I too can make a difference

Publisher Derrick Breaux Creative Director Tyler McElhaney Editor Sarabeth McElhaney editor@zcodemedia.com

Fall is in the Air

I

’m typically a summer guy. I like the warm weather. I like spending time out in the boat. There are the beaches, the parks, hiking, kids are out of school – it’s all good. Summer is usually my favorite time of the year. So why have I spent the last several weeks daydreaming about the arrival of fall? Quite frankly, because it’s been HOT! I guess I’m getting old. Or perhaps I’ve simply turned into a Southern California fair-weather person. Anyone that is close to me knows that I love to wear my shorts and T-shirts. In fact, that is my work attire more days than not. But let’s face it – the recent heat has been ridiculous to say the least. The idea of getting back to our 72 degree average daily forecast – along with chilly nights – is quite appealing to me. I can barely wait. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that our kids are now back in school, and our home is getting back into a more realistic schedule with predictable routines. There is a simple feeling of relief that I get knowing that our kids are hard at work in the classroom and not constantly being shuttled around between play dates, camps, and sleepovers. Oh, and the retirement (for the most part) of the repetitive “I’m bored” phrase – gone! Strange how that happens. And did I mention football? Isn’t fall synonymous with football? The temperature cools down for the players on the gridiron – having Derrick DerrickBreaux Breaux played many years of football growing up, this must be by design. Publisher Publisher Whether you are a local high school football fan, a college fan, or a professional football fan, you can’t deny the excitement of the season. We have some great things planned for the magazine over the next few issues. Be on the lookout for some additional departments and special sections within the pages of 92130 – all designed with you in mind. Thanks for your continued support. Don’t be a stranger. We always welcome feedback, photo submissions, article recommendations, and new ideas. It’s a community thing! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

he Becerra-Zamora family is an active blended family with an affinity for Carmel Valley and anything and everything to do with the ocean. “We love the Carmel Valley community because it is very family-friendly. There are beautiful parks throughout the area. We live near a small canyon where we can take our dogs for walks. The schools are exceptional and we’re walking distance from the Del Mar Highlands. Everything we need is so close, not

to mention that the beach is only 10 minutes away,” related Patty Zamora. She, her husband Santi Becerra, and their children – Sofia, Nico, and James – are thrilled to live so close to the coast as they enjoy sailing, snorkeling, and swimming. In fact, Patti and Santi recently launched a catamaran charter business called Espiritu Santi Luxury Catamaran Charters. Eight-year-old Sofia dances at the Royal Dance Academy in Carmel Valley and plays soccer for the Del Mar Sharks league. Nico is nine years old and is a swimmer for the Rancho Dieguito Swim Team. he cover feature Foundations Funding Education, published in the Aug/Sept 2015 issue of 92130 Magazine, contained a photo error that may have led to the misrepresentation of members of the Torrey Pines High School Foundation. A photo of TPHSF President Sarah Mitchell was placed beside the Q&A for TPHSF Executive Director Bobbi Karlson. We know that a large, regimented school can too easily imprison a young mind. A small one can free it for exploration and discovery. In the end, this is what every parent wants for his or her child. In 2015, Grauer’s 27 seniors have been accepted to 95% of the colleges to which they applied. They’ve amassed $6.9 million in scholarship offers. And they’ve loved coming to school each day. M

elanie Limas An, a Carmel Valley resident and freshman at Canyon Crest Academy, is beginning her high school journey with excellent credentials. First and foremost, thanks to her superb grades, she was chosen to give the commencement speech at her promotion ceremony from Carmel Valley Middle School. Elaborating on the words of wisdom she imparted to her fellow students, Melanie said, “I shared my favorite quote by Dr. Seuss: ‘Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.’” Reminiscing on the experience, Melanie commented, “It was fun to hear my classmates applaud and give a standing ovation.” No stranger to receiving praise from an audience, Melanie, who has taken dance classes since age two, has performed routines competitively for two different dance teams in the SoCal circuit. She’s already won over 50 dance trophies, plaques, and medals. Melanie admitted, “It’s a great feeling to be on stage dancing to the music, seeing people smile, and then hearing the applause.”

In addition to her passion for the performing arts, Melanie is passionate about doing well in school. She proclaimed, “I always strive to maintain an A in all of my classes as a personal challenge.” Involving herself in scholarly extracurriculars, Melanie has been on her middle school’s student council and was one of the founding members of the school’s robotics club. She was even selected to attend Tech Trek, a week-long science camp at UCSD for Southern California girls. Citing her mom – the former Miss Teen Dallas – as an inspiration for her success, Melanie revealed, “She always says that obstacles mean opportunities, and she taught me to reach for the stars!” Melanie’s mom grew up owning over a dozen rabbits in Texas and she passed that love for bunnies on to her daughter. Melanie now has her own bunny, named Snowy, and is in the process of publishing a book she wrote called The Bunny Book. Melanie also volunteers at the House Rabbit Society (www.sandiegorabbits.org), making YouTube videos of homeless rabbits. She proudly exclaimed, “Homes have been found for over 50 bunnies since I started doing this!” Ultimately, Melanie aspires to have a career in psychiatry, hopefully combining it with broadcasting. She also intends to travel around the world. Certainly the global community can benefit from all that Melanie has to offer. 

The Final Frontier MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER ATTENDS SPACE ACADEMY TO INSPIRE STUDENTS

M

ore than 200 teachers from around the world took a trip of a lifetime to Honeywell Educators at Space Academy (HESA), where they were inspired to encourage their students to pursue careers and education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Samantha Thacker – previously a teacher at Earl Warren Middle School, now teaching science at Pacific Trails Middle School – was among the teachers who participated in this game-changing experience. Teachers were offered rigorous training and exercises that gave them insight into what it felt like to be an astronaut. These exercises included land and water survival training, interactive flight programs, high-performance jet simulation, and more. “Being at the academy made me excited to bring space science into the classroom. We are living in such an exciting time with innovations being made across the science, engineering, and technology fields. Attending the Space Academy gave me many ways to better prepare my students for careers in the STEM fields,” shared Samantha.

Created in partnership with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC), the award-winning scholarship program was developed to help middle school math and science teachers become more effective educators in STEM. This year’s program offered two consecutive five-day programs in Huntsville, AL. To make the experience accessible, qualified teachers received round-trip airfare, tuition, and paid meals and accommodations with their scholarships. any nonprofits related to education build opportunities in science and math, provide afterschool reading programs, or build schools in third world countries. Local nonprofit North County Literacy Foundation (NCLF) was founded to serve students with learning challenges right here in our community. As many as 25 percent of students in North County schools are struggling with undetected or misunderstood reading, attention, and processing challenges that can be fixed when given the right therapies. The foundation exists to support assessment and therapy for students of all ages whose families cannot afford private treatment. Maria Bagby, owner of the Therapeutic Literacy Center, founded NCLF in 2014. After earning three master’s degrees and spending 30 years in the educational system at every level, Maria noticed that students often struggle to learn even when they have good teachers or attend award-winning schools. F

or eight years, clinical psychologist Azmaira H. Maker has had her practice established in the Carmel Valley neighborhood, and she adored the area so much that she recently moved with her husband and two children to the community. She admitted, “It is beautiful and it has easy access to the beach, the ocean, and hikes. I also enjoy the excellent restaurants, multiple parks, and many child-friendly and family-friendly activities.” As a psychologist specializing in child, teen, family, and adult issues, Azmaira noticed that parents were especially struggling with discussing divorce with their children. That prompted her to write the book Family Changes: Explaining Divorce To Children. Azmaira elaborated, “It’s for children ages four to eight years old, and it’s an engaging tool for them to better understand the meaning of divorce and to

help them identify typical feelings and questions related to divorce. The language I have used is developmentally geared towards young children, and the beautiful illustrations and magical content allow children to be drawn into the story.” The book has not only garnered excellent reviews from well-established book reviewers, including Midwest Book Review and NetGalley, but it has also received positive write-ups in such magazines as Examiner, Splash, Counseling Today, Thrive, and Flourish Magazine. The book also consistently gets praised on Amazon. Commenting on her book’s success, Azmaira said, “It is unique and different from other children’s books on divorce, as it is a more comprehensive, process-oriented picture storybook with a guide for parents at the beginning and a list of typical process questions at the end. Reviewers, professionals, children, and parents

have also loved the illustrations as the artist, Polona Lovsin, has delivered exquisite pictures.” In addition to seeing clients one-on-one, Azmaira also offers workshops for large groups. Aside from handling divorce issues, Azmaira is also adept at guiding her patients through ADHD, self-esteem, behavioral management, anxiety, pregnancy loss, adoption, and communicating with teenagers. She stated, “I really enjoy engaging in meaningful dialogues through which everyone can learn and grow. I love dynamic, energetic, and interactive learning environments, and when we have delved deep into the issues and questions presented, it is very powerful for me.” Azmaira has many more powerful learning opportunities to impart onto others. ore than 400 guests attended Junior Achievement’s (JA) 27th Annual Hall of Fame celebration, as well as the subsequent JA Golf Classic, to honor four visionary leaders for their outstanding business and community impact. The black-tie event, held at the Grand Del Mar, was hosted by JA’s student and teen ambassadors and featured dinner, an auction, and an award ceremony. The highlight of the evening was the induction of prominent members of the business community into JA’s Business Hall of Fame. Welcome to the Coyote Pack! SAGE CANYON SCHOOL GAINS NEW PRINCIPAL WILLIAM CAMERON

T

he Del Mar Union School District family has grown this year with the addition of Sage Canyon School’s new principal William “Billy” Cameron, who officially took on his new role in early August. Billy was selected for the position based on his impressive previous experience as a principal of Brookside Elementary School in the Ross Valley School District of Marin County, CA. Prior to his three-year experience as principal, Billy was an assistant principal and taught the third and fourth grade in Northern California. “The Brookside community is very similar to Sage in that it has an incredible team of highly collaborative teachers who place great value on educating the whole child,” shared Billy. Initially attending school for business administration, Billy discovered his true passion for working with children on a day-to-day basis inspired

him to pursue his Master’s in educational administration. On his love for working in education, Billy shared, “My favorite part of the school day was and still is working with the students in the classroom, playing on the yard, or helping them to solve problems.” Billy came across the opportunity to interview for Sage Canyon’s open principal position while he was screening teachers at his former school. It just so happened he was planning a road trip to San Diego from Northern California during the same time period as the interview. “I feel very fortunate to have landed at a school and district that is not only highly innovative but backs it up by investing in quality professional development for their teachers and administrators,” shared Billy. “I am looking forward to exploring the San Diego area and settling in and calling this my new home.” 

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Local Skier Trains at Olympic Facility

92130 skier David Cynkin was one of 45 people to be chosen to train in Lake Placid, NY and Park City, UT with the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team’s Elite Development program. The Torrey Pines High School freshman earned the opportunity to train with Olympians at facilities that hosted past Winter Olympic games. He spent one week training in aerial freestyle at Lake Placid at the Olympic Training Center, and earned a scholarship to continue training at the Utah Olympic until school started. During his time in the program, he was put through rigorous fitness tests and skill evaluations. Training focused on overall fitness, as well as aerial ski ramping. “Ski ramping is how freestyle skiers train in the summer. It consists of ski ramps with a water landing to practice new skills in a safer environment,” explained David. On his future as an athlete, David shared, “I’m always up for a new challenge.”

92130 Resident Honored as Lawyer of the Year San Diego-based law firm Higgs Fletcher & Mack recently announced that local resident William M. William currently chairs the Privacy and Information Security Practice Group at Higgs Fletcher & Mack, is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, and is a certified information privacy professional.

Local Appointed as DMUSD Board Member

The Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD) recently appointed newest member, 92130 resident Darren Gretler, to the governing board of trustees. Darren will fill the seat left vacant with the resignation of former board member Alana Kholos until the term expires in November 2016. Darren was selected for the vacant seat from a field of two well-qualified candidates who each had diverse experiences. When it was decided that Darren possessed the qualifications needed in a board member, the board approved the appointment by a unanimous vote. Darren felt a calling to become a board member when he realized his children were nearing school age and he began thinking about the relationship between families and DMUSD. “I’m excited to contribute to the leadership team’s efforts to sustain the district’s excellence, build on accomplishments, and ensure continued success, keeping the district a recognized model for the state,” expressed Darren.

High Schools Make Newsweek’s Top 500

Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) and Torrey Pines High School (TPHS) ranked 117 and 336 out of 500, respectively, on Newsweek’s “America’s Top High Schools” list this year. The high school rankings assess schools based on a broad range of data to determine which institutions do the best job of preparing students for college. CCA was given a college readiness score of 83.8 and has a 100 percent graduation rate. TPHS was given a 78.5 college readiness score and has a 96.4 percent graduation rate. The college readiness score was based on a weighted index of six indicators including college enrollment rate, graduation rate, weighted AP/IB/Dual Enrollment composite, weighted SAT or ACT composite, student retention rate, and counselor-to-student ratio. Newsweek also identified schools that do an excellent job of preparing their students for college while at an economic disadvantage, titled “Beating the Odds.” For more information on both lists visit www.newsweek.com/highschools/americas-top-high-schools-2015.

Gamers’ YouTube Channel Pays Off

Canyon Crest Academy alum and UC Santa Barbara graduates, Tyler Baron and Ryan Kroner, are living their dream of connecting with other gamers via their YouTube channel, Treesicle. Tyler and Ryan, along with their college friends Grant and Kevin, founded their channel in 2014 and have since gained 250,000 subscribers and 23 million views. Inspired by watching other people play games with commentary, the Treesicle team was inspired to create their own top-notch gaming entertainment. “We aim to leave our viewers amused and entertained while hopefully still learning something,” explained Tyler. “I’ve wanted to do this since high school and it’s amazing to see it becoming my career. Also, it’s insanely fun to run a company with three of your best friends.” Though their videos are now earning a profit, the team asserts their greatest accomplishment is getting messages and comments from fans about how their show has brightened their day. View their work at www.youtube.com/user/treesicletube.

CCA Student Honored

Canyon Crest Academy freshman Emily Kogan attended the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston, MA, based on her passion for science and technology. She was nominated by astronaut Buzz Aldrin, known as the second man to walk on the moon. During the three-day conference Emily joined students from across the country and listened to lectures from notable scientists on their research. The scientific gathering also gave her the opportunity to learn from about cutting-edge advances in the field of technology. “Students like Emily Kogan are our future and she deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give her,” said National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists Executive Director Richard Rossi. The 4th Annual Carmel Valley 5K & Kids Fun Run returns to 92130 with a bang on Jan. 24. The race will begin and end under the new community sign at The Village at Pacific Highlands Ranch, and it will stay true to the “trail meets the street” feel of past years. Runners can enjoy local routes through the Manzanita trail and Pacific Highlands Ranch area, and will be treated to a post-race party to cool down with entertainment and live music. “Carmel Valley is my favorite place to run, we have a great mix of scenic trails and streets,” shared Carmel Valley resident and CV5K Manager Katie Wilsey. An annual opportunity for community members to come together for a morning of fitness and fun, the CV5K also provides participants the opportunity to support charitable causes. Student Filmmakers Create Online Miniseries

Ermana Productions, spearheaded by Torrey Pines High School (TPHS) seniors Ivy Gong and Michelle Zhao, recently launched their 18-episode mockumentary Last Period, which follows the misadventures of five high school students during their last class period. The web series was filmed over a duration of two weeks this past summer on the TPHS and UCSD campuses. “We’ve always felt that many of the high school comedies we’ve seen inaccurately portray the extraordinary experience of high school; the portrayals are amusing and entertaining, but not completely relatable,” shared Ivy. “We wanted to capture the struggles and successes of typical high schoolers and that was a huge impetus for the production of Last Period.” The series’ team included students from TPHS and Canyon Crest Academy, as well as other San Diego-based schools. As of late August the series is available for viewing on YouTube. For more information on Ermana Productions contact ermanaproductions@gmail.com or visit www.ermanaproductions.com.

Tackling Domestic Violence

After a year of partnership, San Diego Charger Eric Weddle and Evolution Lighthouse co-founders Patrick Pickford and Gerly Noland are proud of the impact their collaboration has had on the lives of people affected by domestic violence. They’re also excited to unveil their new 2015 line of Chargers-themed jewelry for fans, with every purchase helping Alliance for Hope support victims and their children. The theme for the line is #WearTheSpotlight. “We love the difference we can make in the lives of children and adults,” said Eric. “Seeing their smiles and breaking them out of a horrible situation is what it’s all about. Everyone deserves a life without domestic violence.” Patrick added, “Eric has been my friend for a number of years, and when domestic violence took over the NFL headlines last year, we immediately started talking about what should be done and what could be done.” Learn more and see the collection at www.evolutionlighthouse.com.

Fall into Fashion

With summer behind us, fall fashions are making their much anticipated appearance. Encinitas-based nonprofit, Conner’s Cause for Children, will be embracing the arrival of autumn with their 4th Annual Conner’s Cause for Children Benefit Luncheon, Boutique Shopping, and Live Fashion Show – Fall into Fashion. The event will be hosted by award-winning journalist Sandra Mass of KUSI-TV, who will welcome guests to an afternoon of fine cuisine, a unique shopping experience, and a chic runway show. Proceeds will benefit San Diego County families seeking medical treatment for children with life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Connor’s Cause for Children was founded by 92130 couple John and Judy Champ, whose son Connor succumbed to a battle with cancer at the age of four. Connor’s family was inspired to create a nonprofit that could raise money to help other families in his memory. :::: IN THE SPOTLIGHT

LEARNING PROBLEMS DON’T HAVE TO BE PERMANENT photos by Tyler McElhaney

W

hy do smart children struggle in school? “When children are struggling in school there are likely underlying learning skills that are underdeveloped, inefficient, or need correcting. These are hidden challenges and most go unrecognized,” says Maria Bagby, Owner and Executive Director of the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC). “Many are labeled with ADHD, Reading Disorders, or just said to have low motivation.” These are the children that spend hours doing homework, feel conflict in family dynamics because of homework, and begin to feel less smart than they really are. TLC identifies and fixes the problem that is causing challenges and frustrations. “Our highly trained and professional clinicians are trained in identifying these deficits in underlying skills and in developing those skills through very specialized systems, techniques, programs, and tools. We specialize in developing and correcting deficits in auditory and visual processing, processing speed, working

memory, reflex integration, motor coordination, sensory integration, logic and reasoning, and many others areas that are critical for independent academic success.” After 30 years in education and three Master’s degrees (Psychology, Reading, and Curriculum and Assessment), Maria knows well the training that educators receive. According to her, schools are taught how to create accommodations and in helping children learn to compensate for learning problems. They aren’t trained in how to fix the problems. “The neurosciences haven’t reached the schools yet, resources are limited, and it’s just not in their job description. The schools’ job is to help children access the curriculum – not to fix the problem that is causing the difficulty. And they don’t have the time in their day to develop the underlying learning skills that might be creating the difficulties these students experience.” Children become successful independent learners when these hidden underlying skills are developed. The lives of children and families change and homework is no longer a struggle. In addition, TLC students and families

find a safe haven that is both life-changing and fun. “It’s a welcoming and friendly environment with the buzz of hard work, a lot of laughter, and a real feeling of enjoyment for each individual as the gifted people they really are,” Maria said. Parents often comment that their child feels ‘normal’ at TLC, that they feel accepted, affirmed, and mentored by clinicians that know how smart they really are. One such parent shared, “My son absolutely loves going to TLC because he feels like the gifted and smart child he actually is. I’m no longer seeing his frustrations but his joy in finding the quick ways he grasps things.” Another parent commented, “Our daughter’s ability to read has improved dramatically. Not surprisingly, so has her confidence. She is a much happier and welladjusted teenager.” For more information about their individualized programs or to find out how TLC can help your child visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com. An Urban

OASIS The San Diego Botanic Garden Connects People with Plants from Around the World

S

ince the days it was known as Quail Botanical Gardens, the San Diego Botanic Garden has helped people develop a respect and appreciation for nature. The Garden aims to create programs, volunteer opportunties, and overall memorable experiences for those who seek to be surrounded by floral, fauna, and fun. From fall festivals to its annual holiday gift to the community, Garden of Lights, the Garden has something for locals of all ages. We speak with President and CEO Julian Duval about the Garden’s mission “to inspire people of all ages to connect with plants and nature,” and we provide a look at upcoming projects for this beloved botanical garden.

by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Soul of Photography San Diego Botanic Garden is a beautiful garden oasis nestled on 37 acres in the midst of Encinitas. More than 4,000 different species of plants are found throughout the Garden including endangered, unique, and native plant species. “Thanks to our mild Southern California climate, plants from all over the world thrive here. Our diverse topography provides a wide variety of microclimates, giving visitors the sensation of strolling through a tropical rainforest or hiking in the high desert. Four miles of trails wind through 29 themed gardens, including two specially designed for children – the acclaimed Hamilton Children’s Garden and Seeds of Wonder,” stated Julian Duval, President and CEO. The mission of the San Diego Botanic Garden is to inspire people of all ages to connect with plants and nature. Each of the garden areas is unique and provides an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the beauty of the plants as well as learn about the flora that surrounds them. For example, the Tropical Rainforest area includes a spectacular waterfall set amidst a lush rainforest and shady green paths, while the Landscape for Fire Safety Garden is an area where guests can learn about fire-safe plants, landscape design, and maintenance. In addition, guests can explore the Bamboo Garden, which houses the nation’s largest collection of bamboo, some of which is enjoyed by the giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo!

Deep-Rooted History

Education and Events

Agricultural development of what is now the San Diego Botanic Garden began in 1917 when Donald Ingersoll and his family built a home on the property. In the 1940s the property was sold to Ruth and Charles Larabee. In 1957 Ruth Larabee donated 26 acres to San Diego County with the stipulation that the property remain a haven where people could enjoy and learn about plants and wildlife. The Quail Botanical Gardens Foundation Inc. was formed in 1961 and 10 years later Quail Park – as the Garden was previously known – was opened to the public. In 1993, due to budget constraints San Diego County withdrew its staff and support from what was then called Quail Botanical Gardens. San Diego Botanic Garden is now managed by the QG Foundation which consists of a board of trustees, a professional staff of about 30 people, and many dedicated docents and volunteers.

San Diego Botanic Garden provides classes, tours, and events for visitors to connect with the natural world around them. Birdwatchers gather together once a month on Monday mornings at 8 a.m., docentled tours occur every Saturday morning, and special group tours can be booked in advance. Classes are also offered in a variety of subjects, from planting a vertical garden to creating beautiful wreaths made from succulents. Visit www.sdbgarden.org/classes.htm for the most up-to-date schedule of classes.

Throughout the year the Garden offers a wide variety of interactive, fun, educational, and family-friendly events. “By far our most popular event and annual gift to our community is Garden of Lights. This year the event will take place from Dec. 5 through 23 and Dec. 26 through 30 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.,” said Duval. “In addition to the events put on by the Garden, many private special events take place on the grounds of the Garden. Areas of the Garden can be rented for events such as children’s birthday parties, holiday celebrations, and weddings. Our Gazebo Lawn, Walled Garden, and Waterfall Deck areas are very popular among brides and grooms.”

“We all live in increasingly urban environments. It was so different when the Larabees lived here in a house that was less than 1,000

the health benefits when we do take the time to visit a place like the San Diego Botanic Garden. I am convinced that all of us humans desire a connection with the rest of the living world that goes beyond our dependence on the real world in providing the essential air, water, and food we depend on. The Garden is truly a place of rejuvenation for everyone. Knowing this we made the Garden free of charge for a month after the tragedy of 9/11,” said Duval.

Fauna Among the Flora Spaces such as the Garden are also important natural habitats for native wildlife, including year-round, wintering, and migrating birds. “The Garden is considered a local birdwatching hotspot. In 2014 nine new bird species were sighted at the Garden. To date 136 different birds have been spotted including the varied thrush, yellow-breasted chat, purple finch, white pelican, black-and-white warbler, and the crested caracara,” stated Duval. Children and adults alike also enjoy seeing the Garden’s namesake birds – the quail – that live on the property and have their own enclosure in Hamilton Children’s Garden. In the spring visitors will often see mama and papa quail wandering through the Garden with up to a dozen “cheepers” (babies) following close behind. Visitors can also see crows and red-tailed hawks circling overhead and, on most days, a pair of mallard ducks can be spotted on the property. In addition to birds, the Garden is home to many lizards, rabbits, squirrels, and frogs. Perhaps the most famous animal on the grounds is Sam, the Galapagos Tortoise. Sam, who has a special history with Duval that dates back nearly 50 years, is a therapy animal for special needs individuals. Duval has many stories of how Sam has helped people over the years. One particularly heartwarming tale stands out among the others. “As Julian was sharing Sam with a group of autistic youngsters, his wife saw one nonverbal young man standing back, away from Sam. When she let this young man know that Sam is shy and also doesn’t talk, it made a connection with this autistic youngster that gave him the courage to approach Sam and become his friend,” related Lisa Reynolds, Public Relations and Marketing Manager at the Garden. Though Sam is not currently on display for the general public, he can be seen in his enclosure by visitors taking in the stunning ocean view from the Overlook Natural Area. It is hoped the Sam can be available for special events and engagements in the future.

Connecting with the Community As a part of the Garden’s overall mission to connect plants with people, employment and volunteer opportunities are offered through two organizations for local North County adults who are developmentally challenged. Through Advanced Options, volunteers help clean the signs that are located throughout the Garden and perform general clean-up work in Hamilton Children’s Garden each Wednesday afternoon. Through Community Interface Services, volunteers assist with general upkeep in several of the 29 garden areas every Wednesday. Most recently, the Garden has contracted with Employment and Community Options. The contract with this organization will allow several high-functioning special needs individuals to serve food and beverages at a coffee cart adjacent to the gift shop. Duval also recognized the County of San Diego’s partnership and their most recent $20,000 Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grant, which is funding the new refreshment area. “We are grateful to Supervisor Dave Roberts and our friends at the County for their generous support, which will enable us to add this much-needed amenity to the Garden, including tables, chairs, and signage, as part of the Live Well, San Diego initiative,” said Duval.

Making a Difference at the Garden According to Duval, volunteers of all kinds are essential to the operation of the Garden. There are many different areas for individuals who are interested in volunteering to donate their time, energy, and special skills. “Volunteers can serve as ambassadors in our Welcome Center, work as sales representatives in our Garden Shop, or utilize their skills in any of our departments including membership, development, accounting, operations, marketing, or events,” said Duval. Opportunities are also available for local residents to become docents and lead tours for classes, visitors, and VIPs, or to become a trustee and help guide the vision of the Garden into the future. For more information on how to volunteer at the San Diego Botanic Garden visit www.sdbgarden.org/volunteer.htm.

Staying Healthy This Fall by KAYLAN GRAHAM, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Carmel Valley

Don’t put your well-being on the back burner as the days get shorter and the temperature cooler. Stay motivated and heathy this autumn by making the most of the season. Keep your mind sharp and maintain your mental health. Learning new skills can positively affect well-being, so sign up for that course you’ve been meaning to take, try new recipes, learn a language, or even rediscover an old hobby that is challenging and enjoyable, such as building model airplanes or sketching. Avoid unconscious eating. Watching football and the new TV fall lineup can distract you from how much you’re eating. Pre-measure exactly what you want to eat in the kitchen before settling on the couch – and enjoy the bounty of fall. Apples, pears, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, and pumpkin are low in calories and loaded with nutrients. Get your flu shot. Flu season can start as early as October, so protect yourself and your family by getting vaccinated. In addition, cough or sneeze into your elbow to cover your mouth and nose, and

stay home if you are sick. Check with your doctor’s office for a flu clinic near you. Tailgate Lite. Football season can add pounds fast. Switch out those burgers and chicken wings for grilled kabobs with veggies, fruits and lean meat. Try seafood, salsa, wraps, and stews as well, and avoid overindulging in alcohol. Enjoy your favorite brew, but trade it in for less caloric beverages as the game continues. Keep moving. With fewer outdoor options for physical activities in the evening, make adjustments to ensure you keep moving. Join a gym or a fall sports league, plan evening walks at the mall or become an early riser. Take advantage of fun outdoor activities while the sun is out. Try apple picking, chasing your kids around the corn maze, or cleaning up the yard. Wash your hands. Make sure your family knows the importance of washing their hands. It’s one of the best things we can do to keep from getting sick and spreading germs to others. Take charge of your medical health. Fall is a good time to get a handle on your personal health care. Keep track of any medical issues, and if you want to change your doctor now is the time. Schedule your annual physical if needed – and wellness visits for your family. 

Student Scientists TEAM OF CCA STUDENTS WORK ON UNINVASIVE GLUCOSE SENSOR

A

team of students from Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) recently made their way to MIT to showcase the results of their scientific research at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM), an international competition for high school and undergraduate students. CCA’s iGEM team was founded only in 2014 but has worked hard over the last year on a continually monitoring glucose sensor, which are most commonly used to measure blood sugar levels. The team is currently working to computationally model the sensor, which will light up in the presence of glucose. “At the moment, treatment for glucoserelated diseases such as diabetes and hypoglycemia require constant supervision of blood sugar levels, usually by drawing a small sample of blood from the patient and then injecting them with insulin, which is uncomfortable, and the repetitiveness of which is often restricting,” explained team co-president and CCA junior Julia Wisnia. The team showcased their research project at this year’s competition in Massachusetts by preparing a 25-minute presentation discussing the origins of the project idea, the research process, experiments, and results. In addition to the oral presentation, the team created a website over the course of the year. CCA’s team consisted of seniors Ravi Agarwal, Ariel Braunstein, Harrison Harris, and Amanda Matheson; juniors Vivian Patton, Olivia Shiah; and sophomore Maggie Chen. Junior Miya Coimbra serves as co-president of the team. On the additional help they received with their project, Julia shared, “I would

just like to thank our awesome UCSD mentors, Benjamin Kellman and Sophia Hirakis for guiding us this year and providing us with this opportunity, and our amazing supervisor Mrs. Eddingfield at CCA.” For more information on the iGEM competition visit www.igem.org, and to learn more about the student’s glucose sensor project visit 2015.igem.org/Team:CCA_SanDiego. 

:::: FROM THE DENTIST

INFANT Oral Health Care Infants Should See a Pediatric Dentist Before Their 1st Birthday

by DR. CHRIS PHAM, Carmel Valley Pediatric Dentistry

M

any parents are surprised to hear that their infant should visit the pediatric dentist before their first birthday to insure their child the best smile possible. Parents can expect this initial visit to include an oral exam with additional emphasis on developing a plan to support the child’s healthy oral development. At the child’s initial visit healthy dietary and oral hygiene habits will be discussed. At the same time, we will check for early childhood caries, also known as baby bottle decay. This condition can be detected as early as the first exam if unhealthy dietary habits such as frequent snacking on sugary foods and prolonged bottle feeding are occurring. Until the child can tie his or her own shoes, they do not have the dexterity to brush their own teeth effectively; therefore an adult should assist a young child with both brushing

and flossing if appropriate. Fluoride toothpaste can be used once the child can rinse and spit, which is usually around two to three years of age. Some water supplies are not fluoridated and a pediatric dentist can determine if an adequate amount of fluoride is being obtained through alternative sources, or if fluoride supplements would be beneficial. Many other topics can be addressed at a child’s first visit such as pacifier and thumb habits, and growth and development. Parents will be informed about their child’s future needs regarding early or preventive orthodontic care. Parents know all too well that as a child learns to walk and explore their surroundings, the chance of oral trauma increases. Emergency dental care can be provided more comfortably if a relationship with a pediatric dentist has already been established. At Carmel Valley Pediatric Dentistry our patient’s first visit begins with a tour where we introduce both the parents and the children to our friendly, fun, and inviting office designed specifically for children. They will then meet the dentist and either sit in the dental chair or

in the parent’s lap depending on their child’s comfort level. After seeing the dentist, an oral hygiene instructor will see the child and demonstrate proper brushing, lending some advice to make brushing at home easier, more enjoyable, and more effective. A pediatric dental office is full of smiling people who are very comfortable working with kids and have many skills to make the visit easy for the parents and exciting for the children. Our baby teeth play a vital role in chewing, speaking clearly, guiding the eruption of our permanent teeth, and allowing children to smile with confidence. When we see children early we have a much better chance of preventing many dental problems. Infant oral exams are intended to get the child on the right path for a lifetime of healthy smiles. 

or Madelyn Weinstein, helping to raise awareness and funds for Project A.L.S. is a cause close to her heart. “I was inspired to get involved in supporting A.L.S research by the diagnosis and passing of my grandpa due to this heinous disease. He passed away in the spring of 2014 and I have been involved with Project A.L.S since then,” related Madelyn. Prior to her involvement with Project A.L.S, Madelyn worked with the local A.L.S Association in San Diego, raising $25,000 as team captain of George’s Legacy at the Annual Walk to Defeat A.L.S. In the spring of 2015, Madelyn helped to organize a benefit baseball game between her alma mater, La Jolla Country Day, and Santa Fe Christian at Petco Park. The game raised $5,000 in the name of Project A.L.S. According to Madelyn, she has built strong business and personal relationships with the founders and directors of Project A.L.S, and she will continue to work with the organization throughout her college years at the University of Texas at Austin. “All Project A.L.S funds go directly towards research projects. The Fall Gala is one of the premier fundraising events for the organization. It takes place in New York City every October,” stated Madelyn. She encourages anyone who is interested in fundraising or serving as a volunteer for Project A.L.S to visit www.projectals.org. Madelyn credits her parents as a strong inspiration and influence in her life. “My parents inspire me every day, as well as my community service advisor from La Jolla Country Day, Susan Nordenger. She has been the greatest mentor in my life,” revealed Madelyn. In addition to her community service work, Madelyn enjoys traveling, exercising, reading, skiing, and spending time with her family and friends. :::: HOME TIPS

BUDGET-FRIENDLY HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS TO TRICK OUT YOUR HOUSE THIS FALL

A

by RANDI CANTRELL

lthough the warm weather of the San Diego summer still lingers into September, the start of fall is quickly approaching, and with it the fun of preparing for all of the upcoming seasonal traditions and holidays. Halloween will be here before we know it – bringing festive décor and props such as spooky spiders and supernatural ghouls to your neighborhood – but all of that preparation doesn’t have to break the bank. Scare up your crafting skills and get into the spirit by using these tips to create your own one-of-a-kind Halloween decorations.

Front Door Mummy

Have some left-over white streamers from a recent birthday party or family celebration? Put these to good use by taping the paper streamers to your front door in strips, making sure to overlap the layers for a wrapped look. Next take some white and black construction paper and a pair of scissors. Cut two large white circles and two smaller black circles to make eyes for your mummy and secure them to the door by taping them to the paper streamers. Another option is to use black streamers to create a monster completely from your own imagination!

Ghost Lanterns

Recycle old gallon milk jugs and light the way to your door for trick-or-treaters with ghosty lanterns. Rinse out an empty gallon milk jug until it is completely clean, then draw on a spooky face with a black permanent marker such as a Sharpie. From there, cut a small hole in the back of the jug, drop in some white holiday

lights, and plug your new creation into an outdoor outlet to give your lantern a ghastly glow.

Glowing Eyes

Add some mystery to your front yard foliage by creating glowing eyes from used cardboard tubes such as toilet paper or paper towel rolls. Just make eye-shaped cuts out of the cardboard, place a glowstick inside the tube, and tuck it away into the bushes along your front walkway. To achieve a more haunting effect, make a bunch of different sets and scatter them throughout the bushes and trees in your yard.

Paint Your Pumpkin

Let out your inner artist and take a less-traditional approach to pumpkin decorating this year with paint or glitter. While you’re at the pumpkin patch, look for one that’s a good shape without too many bumps, cuts, or soft spots, as these will make painting more difficult. Also check to

54 • 92130Magazine.com • October | November 2015

make sure that the bottom is flat enough to allow the pumpkin to sit up straight. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry it completely before you begin. Next, decide whether you’ll be painting the whole pumpkin or just a small part of it. If you’re planning to completely cover it in paint, do this in stages to allow the paint to dry in between. Acrylic paints work best, but feel free to embellish your masterpiece with glitter or props such as a hat or costume jewelry.

Window Silhouettes This classic decor idea is simple and quick, but still adds a lot of flair. Pull together some black construction paper, a pencil, some scissors, and tape, and get to work tracing your favorite Halloweeninspired shapes – think bats, black cats, spiders, or skeletons. Once you’re ready, carefully cut out your design and adhere it to your window with tape. When it’s dark outside but your lights are on, the shapes will create spooky silhouettes for your neighbors to enjoy.

Hooked on Aquaponics HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PLAN SUSTAINABLE GARDEN ON CAMPUS

S

ix local students are determined to do their part in making their community healthier and more resourceful by founding the Aquaponics Club on the campus of Canyon Crest Academy. Aquaponics is the process of growing plants and produce in a soilless bed where water is circulated from fish tanks. The plant roots utilize naturally occurring bacteria from the fish, and ultimately purify the water. “The club is an extension of something I have done at home. Originally, building the aquaponics system I built was a project of hope – a gettingbetter project while my dad had cancer,” explained club president and founder Luke Lindgren. “Expanding it to the school allows people to get involved and allow for a grassroots movement of connectivity to our food. Hopefully this will get more people in suburban and urban environments interested in raising food crops and small livestock.” Including Luke, the club officially has six members – Julia Wisnia, Ariel Braunstein, Amanda Matheson, Sarah Cheney, and

Zilu Pan. Each member possesses their own interdisciplinary skills ranging from finance to STEM to public outreach. Currently the team is looking for sponsors and community interest to help them get their project off the ground. With the intention to create a self-sustaining club, the students hope to procure a producer’s permit for CCA, which will allow their produce to be sold at local farmer’s markets. In the mean time they hope to have the system up-and-running by Thanksgiving and are opening up the club to new members. Learn more at www.sites.google.com/site/introtoaquaponics/home. 

San Diego Pumpkin Patches Promise Plenty of Fun This Season by LAINEY KRAL

A

s the days get a little bit shorter and nights get a little bit colder – as cold as they ever get in San Diego – it’s time to enjoy the opportunities of autumn. Perhaps nothing symbolizes fall festivities as much as the pumpkin. Whether carved and lit as a jack-o-lantern, baked into a pie, or simply displayed for the holidays, this round orange squash is a critical component of the season. Throughout the month of October, local farms will open up their gates to welcome families eager to pick out their own. San Diego offers a wide variety of pumpkin patches, with something to suit any family’s idea of a perfect autumn day. There are corn mazes, bounce houses, hayrides, train rides, and tasty fall treats. Most are open to the public from late September through Oct. 31 – check out the farms’ websites for detailed hours and available activities. Those who are interested in a simpler, purely pumpkin-oriented experience might want to visit Lavender Hill Pumpkins in Fallbrook. Lavender Hill offers 35 different varieties of pumpkins, squash, and other gourds to pick straight from the vine, ranging

in size from the miniature Munchkin to the North Atlantic Giant. You can find organic pumpkins at Suzie’s Farm, where visitors can take a guided tour of the whole farm in addition to picking their own pumpkins. Farm Stand West has a produce stand with delicious seasonal offerings. If kids or parents want to get to know some four-legged farm folk, a number of pumpkin patches also have petting corrals. Try Bates Nut Farm, Mountain Valley Ranch, or Oma’s Pumpkin Patch for an up-close experience. Pumpkin Station Farms in Bonita and Rancho Bernardo let visitors learn about the farm animals, and kids can saddle up for a pony ride at Bates Nut Farm and Peltzer Farms. The latter also has pig races to cheer on. 

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Real Estate Forecast for 2016 R

eal estate soared in 2015 and the prediction for 2016 is bright. The general consensus among housing experts is that home prices in the U.S. will continue rising in 2016, but at a slower pace than 2015. The California Association of Realtors (CAR) issued a forecast and outlook for the California real estate market in 2016. The Realtor group expects home prices to continue rising through the end of this year and into next. With that being said, house values could rise at a more moderate pace next year compared to the gains we’ve seen over the last couple of years. The California Association of Realtors (CAR) expects house values in California to

continue rising next year. Home prices will likely grow steadily this year and next, but next year’s gains could be smaller than what we’ve seen in recent years. This doesn’t mean the California housing market is becoming “sluggish.” Far from it. Housing demands are still high in most areas across the state. It merely suggests a return to normalcy. The double-digit price increases of 2013 and 2014 were the exception resulting from the housing collapse of a few years earlier. Home prices had a long way to climb in those days, and they rose quickly. Most California real estate market predictions for 2016 call for continued but more

modest home-price gains. Low mortgage rates should continue to lure buyers into the market between now and the end of this year. But a gradual rise in interest rates and home prices could price some buyers out of the market. So, while there is room for continued growth in most markets across California, we probably shouldn’t expect the kinds of gains seen over the last couple of years.
