Household Fiscal Year?
W
Derrick Breaux Publisher
hile many businesses use a calendar year for convenient accounting purposes, I’ve come to realize that the vast majority of people actually run their homes similar to a fiscal year basis. Sure, everyone likes to gear up and prepare for the big symbolic New Year celebration, but for most families, Jan. 1 merely marks the halfway point on the annual journey of household responsibility and schedules. Shouldn’t there be a big prize waiting for each of us when we finish the year? A calendar year ending in December doesn’t seem very exciting. Kids go back to school in January – certainly no prize for most of them. Tax season is looming right after the beginning of the new calendar year. Again, not very exciting for most of us. Although technically a new year, everyone is typically still quite involved with trying to get through their fiscal year. What I mean by this is that the end of the year for most families seems to take place in June. That’s right… June is officially the end of our household fiscal year. June is when kids finish school – in fact, many kids graduate or get promoted to the next grade. It is the month that moms and dads are typically limping through the finish line donating their final volunteer hours in the classrooms (I have to admit that I’ve read a few hilarious postings about this in some of my recent social media binges). Spring sports are finishing up. The gift of warm weather is upon us. Summer must be the end-of-year prize! Although we are spoiled in San Diego and blessed with beautiful weather year round, I still love summer. Summer brings freedom for kids – I’m sure some parents may argue that it can also bring boredom. Summer is a time for family vacations, trips to the beach, outside barbeques, walks with the dog, playing outside until sunset, and creating lifelong memories. For my daughter who recently graduated from high school, summer is a time of transition. It marks the end of a huge chapter in her life and the beginning of the rest of her adult life. The start of her new household fiscal year comes with unlimited promise, excitement, uncertainty, exploration, dedication, and nervousness – all wrapped up into a couple of months. Perhaps we should all rethink the traditional New Year celebration concept. What we should all really be celebrating is a Year “End” party (in June). I see the Year End celebration as a festive event where adults get to congratulate each other for actually making it through the year in one piece. The occasion should include high fives, hugs, toasts, and perhaps, some type of victory dance. I definitely think that we might be on to something here. I hope everyone has a great summer!

Scott reside in 92130 where they are raising their 8-year-old twins, Zachery and Avery, to whom they have passed down their love for golf and all things sports. The Footes make an effort to play golf together at every opportunity, but they are also busy with many other activities. “Our family favorites are golf, tennis, swimming and hiking,” noted Marni. This year, Zachery played Pop Warner football, basketball and baseball for Del Mar Little League.
“He does parkour at Flip Force and takes tennis lessons, as well,” added Marni. Avery’s activities for the year included Pop Warner cheer, basketball and North Shore Softball. “She earned four MVP awards during this All Star season!” exclaimed Marni. “She also does trampoline and tumbling at Flip Force and takes tennis lessons.” While they certainly lead an active lifestyle, the Footes still find time to stay involved with their community. Scott, who is co-founder and managing director for Square 1 Bank, has been a coach for nearly every one of the kids’ sports teams. Marni is a stay-at-home mom who is on the executive board for the Ashley Falls Elementary PTA, has been “team mom” for the kids’ various sport teams, and volunteers with Avery’s Girl - MARNI FOOTE Scout troop. Zachery and Avery have volunteered with Ashley Falls Kidpower, packing up candy and cards to send to U.S. troops. The Footes moved to Carmel Valley ten years ago and couldn’t imagine choosing a better place to call “home.” “We love that we can walk to school, are close to the beach, shops and all of Carmel Valley’s wonderful parks,” shared Marni. “We also like all of the trails in our neighborhood and enjoy bike rides and sunset walks... it’s so beautiful here!” ¢

H
ave you ever been playing a video game and not liked the way things work? Dissatisfied with the characters or their capabilities? Most people deal with this issue by waiting for a new version, or picking another type. Not if you are Brendan Burns. If your name is Brendan Burns, you simply modify the existing game, or maybe you create an entirely better game. And you do this by starting with simple building games at age 8, and by learning three different computer programming languages (LUA, JAVA, RPG Maker VX Ace) by the end of 7th grade. Brendan Burns, not surprisingly, aspires to own his own video game company one day. Even though he’s only 13 years old, his family support, interests and background place him square on the road to success. He’s been attending The Warren Walker School since 1st grade

(“It is extremely challenging and I love it!”), and has been an Honor Roll student throughout. His family moved to Carmel Valley eight months ago so he can try to attend Canyon Crest Academy (CCA). CCA would allow him to immerse himself in programming and robotics within the curriculum as well as extra-curricular activities. One of the ways Brendan pursues his goals (and his fun) is through modifications of existing games. He runs his very own server ‘in the cloud’ where he crafts changes in Minecraft and inserts them into the game so he and his friends can enjoy the different version. Life is BRENDAN WANTS TO not all seeds, mobs and enchanting, though. He loves history and will ATTEND STANFORD read his textbook or research history “BECAUSE THEY HAVE on the internet for fun, as well as THE MOST SUCCESSFUL being fluent in Spanish and playing TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES the clarinet in Honor Band. He is clearly about programming, FORMED BY STUDENTS.” though. He attended his first adult technology course at UC San Diego at the age of 11. “He learned the LUA programming language and in only twenty-four hours had programmed a bug-free video game of his own making,” said one of his professors. “We have never witnessed a student master a programming language so quickly.” His robotics instructor, Victor Ciccarelli, is amazed at Brendan’s ability. “He has a natural gift for computers and is obviously going to have a very bright future in this field.” Brendan wants to attend Stanford University “because they have the most successful technology companies formed by students.” ¢

his past June a new chapter closed at Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) and Torrey Pines High School (TPHS) with the commencement ceremonies of each Class of 2014. However, there is still much more to come for these ambitious students as they prepare for their adventures ahead. Both high schools held commencement ceremonies on campus in the presence of family members, friends, faculty, staff and guests. Donning their decorated caps, students filed down the field to shake their principals’ hands and welcome the moment they had waited for all year: the turning of the tassel. Congratulations to the outgoing seniors of CCA and TPHS, and best luck with all of your future endeavors!

CCA Teacher Inspires San Diego TEDxYOUTH SPEECH TEACHES A POSITIVE LIFE LESSON
T
his year marked Canyon Crest Academy’s (CCA) 3rd Annual TEDxYouth@SanDiego event with over 400 students from San Diego County in attendance. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized talks that bring people together to share a TED-like talk experience. The talks encompassed a variety of topics, including one special talk in particular that really touched the audience. According to Jason Phillips, CCA student and a member of the TEDxYouth@SanDiego student organizing team, “The speakers ranged from all different fields including cutting edge youth scientists like Jack Andraka and Eric Chen to powerful stories of the human condition with Mark Raines and Shaka Senghor.” One of the most inspiring talks of the day came from CCA teacher Mark Raines who spoke about his own personal life journey to overcome adult onset speech impediment. Jason said that the talk changed his life. He elaborated, “His ability to go through such a hard and strenuous time with the speech impediment and persevering every day to achieve his goals is very inspiring. Mr. Raines is one of those teachers that you leave his class with more than just educational knowledge; you leave with life lessons and a better mindset moving forward in life.” Mr. Raines speech will stick with Jason for years to come. “Mr. Raines is the teacher that I will always remember to be the one who left the biggest impact on my high school and teenage career,” he said. Mr. Raines teaches advanced video film, ROP media production, video film, and cinema conservatory at CCA. He was named the
2013-2014 Teacher of the Year at CCA and he plans to continue teaching media production and video film at the school. Jason will be attending the University of Southern California this fall and plans on majoring in film production.

:::: FACES IN THE CROWD
Perceptive FROM A PERSONAL TRAUMA, CREATED HER LIFE VISION
ANGELA PENNELLA
by AMY LEHRER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography
A
Dodge Ram pickup slammed head-on into Angela’s car at over 55 mph, changing her life forever. Prior to this accident, Angela Pennella was a star athlete in New Jersey. She was the 6th grader who had made the traveling softball team and the freshman who had earned a basketball varsity letter. She motivated every team she played on, collected trophies, won a volleyball scholarship to Quinnipiac University, lifted weights, and became an exceptional student who graduated from college with a 3.54 GPA. Then on May 24, 2002 emergency responders cut Angela out of her car and raced her to a level 1 trauma center where a family member identified her by her feet. Despite a traumatic brain injury, broken ribs, a lacerated liver, a punctured lung, numerous internal injuries, and needing over a thousand stiches to her face and body, Angela survived. During Angela’s arduous recovery, she found clarity and her life’s purpose. She credits her survival to her mental and physical strength and her “Don’t Stop Believing” attitude. Her traumatic event changed her perspective. She had been an achiever who pursued success at the expense of personal dreams and life balance. Now that she recognized the fragility and preciousness of life, she wanted to focus on inner contentment and helping others achieve it too. She explained, “I felt a responsibility to use what I learned to inspire others and make an impact on the way they live their lives!” In an effort to help others create a healthy worklife balance, she became a strength coach for the mind. She revealed, “The most rewarding aspect of my job is to give people hope by re-framing their thinking and changing their perspective.” One satisfied client, Larry, expressed, “Thank you Coach Angie for helping me to work my way through some unexpected life challenges and relationship issues with the assistance of a simple but constructive and methodical plan of action.” For those wishing to change their lives, Angela offers advice. First, define the change desired. Second, write out the steps needed. Third, take action. And if the steps needed aren’t known, talk to people who have made the desired change to find out how they succeeded. Angela has indeed achieved her own balance. She inspires and helps others, volunteers with the homeless ministry through her church, plays beach volleyball, runs, travels and spends time with her boyfriend. ¢

GIRL POWER SOPHIE AND LINDSEY USE BOW-MAKING TO HELP FOSTER CHILDREN by MICHELLE TREMBLAY photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
S
ophie Stein and Lindsey Ewing (both age 12) first realized they were going to be good friends while bonding over an art project. It was at this time that the girls discovered they not only had a mutual liking for fun art, but they shared a desire for volunteerism. So, together, using their artistic abilities, the girls found a creative way to give back to the community – making and selling unique hair bows with the proceeds benefitting a local charity. Their charity of choice: Promises2Kids, an organization dedicated to preventing child abuse and helping current and former foster youth in San Diego County overcome difficulties and successfully transition into adulthood. “We wanted to support a local charity that involves children,” explained the girls. “We researched many charities and finally agreed on Promises2Kids that helps foster

children right here in San Diego County. We chose Promises2Kids because we want other kids to be able to have a loving and supportive family.” Today, the girls are as busy as ever with their bow-making and are proud to have made their first donation to Promises2Kids — a whopping $1,200! Both Lindsey and Sophie – who will attend Carmel Valley Middle School in the fall – have lived their whole lives in Carmel Valley. “I now play [soccer] for Del Mar Carmel Valley (DMCV) Sharks Competitive. Lindsey and I are on the same awesome most fantastic team,” offered Sophie. “I enjoy dancing at Royal Dance Academy and tap is my favorite.” “I enjoy playing soccer for DMCV Competitive Sharks and surfing every Friday with my surf team,” shared Lindsey. “I love traveling with my friends and family.”

In their free time, the girls are busy “bowing” – even making it their Bat Mitzvah Project. “We started out by selling just to our friends and hosting ‘Bow-tiques’ in private homes,” recalled Sophie. “Now we are also doing birthday parties… will be at many gift shows before the holidays and are also working on a booth at the La Jolla Open Aire farmer’s market.” Sophie and Lindsey are thrilled to know that their volunteer efforts are making a difference. “I think our biggest accomplishment is to know that the money we raised through selling our bows will provide necessary programs for foster children,” shared the girls. “We really appreciate all the support we’ve received from our families, VISIT SOPHIE AND friends and the Carmel LINDSEY’S BOW Valley community.” ¢

COLLEGE NANNIES + TUTORS A FULL SERVICE APPROACH TO CHILDCARE AND TUTORING by LINDA FRABL | photos provided by College Nannies + Tutors
At
a recent nanny training more than twenty nannies shared tips and kid-appropriate jokes. There was a rush to the supply cabinet to replenish nanny craft and game bags, and more than a few glitter spills to clean up before tutors arrived for evening sessions. So goes a day at College Nannies and Tutors (CNT), located at Del Mar Highlands Town Center. “Our busiest day for inquiries is Monday! Sunday evening parents find time to talk, which often brings the realization that support in the form of childcare or tutoring is key to a happier, stronger family. That’s where we come in,” said CNT Owner Laura Davis. Whether needing a nanny or a tutor, CNT’s concierge approach starts with a consultation to identify the needs and goals of each family. Experience has proven not all 4-year-olds need the same nanny profile and not all middle school students have the
same learning style, so CNT utilizes their in-depth Role Model Match approach to identify the elements to make a successful partnership between family and nanny or tutor. Prepared with that information, CNT’s management team recruits, trains and hires only candidates that pass rigorous interviews, background screens and a proprietary training processes. “Our foundation and uniqueness is rooted in this customized approach for each family,” added Davis. Nanny services are driven by the goals of each family, from full-time care to the welldeserved date night. According to Davis, CNT has the reputation in the nanny community and relationships with college career offices to hire the best nannies so that you don’t need to do it yourself. Nanny Placement Manager Sally O’Neill considers herself an expert in uncovering a family’s desires, then sets out to make a great match. “Once we make a

connection we stay involved to assure a strong relationship is built. We provide ongoing professional development and operate as a team to provide helpful resources, exceptional care, and safe employment,” said O’Neill. CNT claims that tutoring – whether for subject specific mastery, college admission or the life-skill of study and organization habits – is a necessity for most middle and high school students. Learning Center Manager Sarabeth Pollock said, “Our tutors really connect with each student and impart not only knowledge, but confidence, support and a can-do attitude. Each session occurs between the same tutor and student so learning is continuous and progressive.” The Learning Center is filled with reference books, resource materials and even local school textbooks. According to Davis, using the student’s textbooks allows tutoring sessions to enhance efforts in the classroom, which helps build confidence. College Tutors SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

Davis proudly expressed that the Del Mar Highlands Town Center location was recently deemed a “Rock Star Office” for exceeding national guidelines and service performance. No small feat, as CNT claims it is the largest employer of nannies in the nation. Laura professed, “We invite anyone to stop by our placement and learning center to meet our team and learn more about what we do!”

WHAT’S THE HISTORY BEHIND THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SAN DIEGUITO? In 1966, Doug Hall, then executive director of the Carlsbad Boys Club, met with Dr. Charles Clark from Encinitas. Dr. Clark was representing the Encinitas Optimist Club and was interested in starting a Boys Club in the San Dieguito communities. The Encinitas Optimist and the San Dieguito Kiwanis service clubs had joined together in an effort to establish a youth program for the seven communities in the San Dieguito area: Encinitas, Leucadia, Olivenhain, Cardiff, Solana Beach, Del Mar, and Rancho Santa Fe. In February 1967, Dr. Clark, President of the Board, asked Doug Hall, who had been acting as a consultant and executive director (through an arrangement with the Carlsbad Club), to be the permanent executive director of the new San Dieguito Boys Club. After much deliberation and discussion with his family, Doug accepted the position. He would hold this position for the next twenty-five years, and be instrumental in the success of the Club for over forty-five years. Today, the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito is one of the most successful Clubs in the country, serving more than 20,000 youth in the San Dieguito community. WHAT KIND OF FEES ARE INVOLVED WITH HAVING BOYS AND GIRLS ATTEND PROGRAMS AT THE CLUBS? DO YOU OFFER ANY SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL AID TO FAMILIES IN NEED? Fees vary between branches and departments, but we offer financial aid at all our branches and programs. No child is excluded from attending the Club since financial assistance is available.
PLEASE TELL US HOW ONE GOES ABOUT BECOMING A SPONSOR OR SUPPORTING THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS FINANCIALLY. You can go to our website at www.bgcsandieguito.org and click on GIVE. You can also call the development department at 858-793-7345 and we can customize an event sponsorship or corporate partnership to best fit your business needs.
DO YOU HAVE ANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME? WHAT IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE? Yes! Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors, tutors, coaches, art and computer teachers and more – you tell us your interests and we’ll match you with a Boys & Girls Club near you. Just one or two hours each week can make a real difference in a young person’s life. As a volunteer, it can make a real difference in your life too. Volunteers at Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito get the training and support they need to be a successful part of our clubs and the lives of our members. Our children’s safety at the Clubs is our number one priority; therefore everyone is required to have a background check before being approved to volunteer.
HOW DOES ONE GO ABOUT PROVIDING ITEMS THAT THE CLUBS ARE IN NEED OF? WHAT ARE THE TOP FIVE ITEMS THAT YOU’RE IN NEED OF MOST? If a donor is interested in providing an item that the Club needs you can go to our website and under the “GIVE” tab there is an area for “wish list items.” You can click on that tab and there is a list of needed items by branch and department. You can either purchase the item yourself and deliver to the Club, (we pick-up also) or you can make a donation and we will purchase the item. Our top five needs are vans for transportation (new or used), leather couches (new or gently used), area rugs (new), computers (new), and sports equipment.
WHAT SETS THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SAN DIEGUITO APART FROM OTHER CLUBS WORLDWIDE? We are unique because of the additional specialized programs
we offer for our youthy Center for a Healthy Lifestyle, Youth Arts Academy, Aquatics, Middle School Sports, Athletics, and a Montessori School.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CLUBS’ MOST POPULAR FUNDRAISING EVENTS? Our biggest and most exciting event is our African Safari Youth-of-the-Year Gala being held on Friday, Aug. 8 at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Infield Pavilion. This event is a casual, but a fun evening of night horse racing, dinner/ drinks, silent and live auctions, and dancing with the Wayne Foster Band. But, most importantly, we honor our overall Youth-of-the-Year for 2014 chosen from six finalists throughout our seven branches here at the Club. In addition, Terry Lingenfelder, our 2014 Volunteer of the Year will be honored for his commitment and dedication over forty years to this organization. Our other large fundraiser that we have is our unique Chip-in-for-Kids Golf Tournament which is a unique golf experience that enables golfers to play on the North Course of Torrey Pines Golf Club while the pros are playing their final round on the South Course during the Farmers Insurance Open PGA tournament. The day includes a unique ball format for eighteen holes, VIP convenient parking across the street from the North Course, premium gift bag valued at $250, catered breakfast and made-to-order BBQ lunch with hosted beverages, PGA passes, and entrance into a private section of the Tilted Kilt Tartan Terrace to watch the finals of the Open on the South Course. For more information on all fundraising events, please visit our website and click on events.
ARE THERE ANY EXCITING NEW PROJECTS, DEVELOPMENTS, OR PROGRAMS COMING TO THE CLUBS? Yes! We are currently expanding our Center for a Healthy Lifestyle and are in the process of building a half acre organic garden at our Griset Branch in Encinitas. Phase 1 of the project, the commercial kitchen, was completed in June. The garden and kitchen will serve as a staple in the community for garden to table education, cooking classes for kids, nutrition education and vocational skill training. The garden is estimated to be completed by the end of summer.
IF YOU COULD GRANT THE CLUBS ONE WISH, WHAT WOULD IT BE? To expand our programs, services and branches to the areas not being served in our surrounding communities, especially to youth that need us most.

THE DOLLHOUSE STUDIO
THE LARGEST “THEMED” PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO IN SAN DIEGO

ho knew that all of those hours spent playing with Barbies could ultimately result in a lucrative future? That childhood pastime prompted Heather Young Leary, Owner/Manager of Forever Young Parties and Events (FYPE, Inc.), to recently open up the photography studio component of her business, called the Dollhouse Studio. Heather explained, “When I was a little girl, I created an entire Barbie world in my basement. I was so focused on the details that would make up these scenes that sometimes it became too late in the day to even play with the dolls themselves. But I didn’t mind. The important thing was to create the perfect setting for the perfect imaginary interaction.” That perfect setting is now The Dollhouse Studio, the largest “themed” photography studio in San Diego. Composed of sixteen minithemed rooms and thousands of corresponding props, the rooms were originally intended to just showcase the different FYPE Inc. partytheme ideas. But Heather admitted, “I realized what beautiful photographs could be taken in the different rooms! So we created the Dollhouse Studio, because we believe you are never too old to play pretend!” The room vignette themes include Candyland, Alice in Wonderland, Beach

Party (“With sand!” Heather interjected), French-Vintage Circus, County Fair, Chalkboard School, Carousel, Paper Moon (“We can put anyone on the moon!”), Versailles, Front Porch, Retro Kitchen, Fashionable Clothes Closet, the Party Wall, Frozen (based on the Disney movie), NYC Penthouse and the Green Room (green screen walls). If Heather seems adept at creating lush Hollywood-type sets, it should come as no surprise that she once worked on soundstages at Paramount Studios. That insatiable thirst to collect fun props fully manifested itself after the birth of her daughter, Estella, eight years ago. Heather exclaimed, “Estella was so full of life, that I began wanting to document every part of it. Hence began a yearly birthday party celebration in her honor, each with an incredible amount of attention to detail.” That “attention to detail” included amassing enough party props to fill up the family garage, as well as two offsite storagesheds. After her husband encouraged her to move the items elsewhere, Heather spent weeks searching for what is now her 4,200 square foot company site. Heather exclaimed, “It is a perfect venue where I can display all of my fabulous props and party concepts to potential clients. I invite you to come and play with us!”

urtis Chan, a California native, accompanied his father to a medical conference in San Diego when he was a child. He liked it here, so when he graduated from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 1986, he arrived in Del Mar to begin his practice. “I always knew I wanted to build a dental business close to the ocean with the best of climate conditions,” shared Dr. Chan. Twenty-eight years later, Curtis L. CURIOSITY Point Loma's Beautiful Landmarks and Nature by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Tyler McElhaney
W
e're deep into summer: the sun is bright, the sand is soft, and the ocean is so inviting. For what remains of your summer break, take a day to explore Point Loma, offering historical landmarks, tide pools, awe-inspiring cliffs and hiking trails.
The Old Point Loma Lighthouse takes you back in time to when sailing ships relied on these beacons to guide them through safe waters. Built in 1854, its light could be seen for twenty-five miles. However, the builders didn’t take into account the signature low fog that would obscure the light, and so in 1891, the lighthouse was closed and a new Point Loma lighthouse was constructed at a lower elevation. The old lighthouse has now been converted into a museum, where you can explore what life was like there and see the old lamp whose large beam once permeated the peninsula. Below the lighthouses are a series of silent sentinels collectively known as Fort Rosecrans. The Point Loma peninsula shapes a natural barrier at the entrance of San Diego Bay, and in 1899 the United States Department of War built a series of gun batteries into the cliffs as a strategic harbor defense. While you can’t
50 • 92130Magazine.com • August | September 2014
enter the batteries themselves today, you can walk alongside these massive strongholds. Whale-watching is popular here, but head to the tide pools to see the tinier creatures that make homes on our shores. Sea stars, mussels, crabs, and other gastropods come and go with the tides. While fun to look at, rangers warn not to touch the animals, as many of them are sensitive and can be harmed or killed from being handled by humans. The tide pools are parallel to the Coastal Tidepool Trail, and more hiking can be explored on the two-mile Bayside Trail. For history hounds, the Cabrillo National Monument offers a closer look at the first explorer to land on the United States’ western shores, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. With a large statue to commemorate his exploration, the park also features annual reenactments of his landing.

rady Aiken of Cathedral Catholic High School (CCHS) has been announced as the first round draft pick for the Houston Astros. With the first pick in the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft, the Houston Astros chose the left-handed pitcher based off his skill and promise for the future. According to the Houston Astros, Brady’s age will allow them a great deal of room to improve his game. They feel he will be the number one or two starter in the team rotation in the future. Brady is the fifth left-handed pitcher chosen with the top selection, joining baseball players David Clyde, Floyd Bannister, Brien Taylor and David Price. According to MLB scouts, Brady really can deliver. With a fastball ranging between ninety-one to ninety-three miles per hour, he has quite the arm. His intuition on the field was of great interest to scouts as well as his strong command when pitching. Brady has also been recognized as one of the top high school baseball athletes in the United States by Perfect Game USA. He pitched an almost impeccable game for the 18U United States national baseball team in 2013 during the Baseball World Cup against Japan, which lead the team to gold. In February 2014 he was awarded the USA Baseball International Performance of the Year Award for his outstanding work on the field. He was honored with a ceremony held at CCHS in spring 2014.

From custom club fittings, to virtual playing lessons, to a patented technology that compares your swing to those of professional players, GolfTEC offers not only a lesson in golf, but an experience, as well. “GolfTEC itself was started in Denver, in 1995, by co-founders and PGA Professionals Joe Assell and Mike Clinton,” stated LaTour. “Creating a consistent, well-documented golf instruction approach was at the heart of their new-to-the-world business concept. They set out to revolutionize the golf improvement industry and many would agree they’ve done just that.” While Suzanne – who is in her twenty-first year in the financial services industry – was researching various franchises to diversify for future retirement plans, she signed up to take lessons at GolfTEC. “Three lessons into my plan, I overheard that the store was for sale and called Denver to get more information,” she said. “I thought ‘Perfect. I love golf – I should buy this,’ and I ended up buying the entire San Diego Region with a plan to build out four Centers!”
It’s been almost four years, and GolfTEC now has expanded to two San Diego locations – one in Golden Triangle in La Jolla, and the other in Rancho Bernardo. “GolfTECs are fun, welcoming environments,” stated LaTour. “All of our team love what they do – they love to teach and they are passionate about the game of golf!” GolfTEC’s basic philosophy: “to make people better golfers and do it with an organized

and proven game plan,” explained LaTour. The GolfTEC plan is comprised of five main elements: a diagnosis of the player, lessons, video-based practice, an online accessible “player performance center,” and precisionmatched golf clubs. As stated in the company’s website, “Whether you are a complete beginner or an accomplished golfer, GolfTEC’s comprehensive approach to improvement can help you reach your personal goals.”

TPHS STUDENT STANDS OUT AT ISEF photo courtesy of the SOCIETY FOR SCIENCE & THE PUBLIC
The
Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is “the world’s largest international pre-college science competition,” drawing over 1,700 high school students from over seventy countries who “showcase their independent research and compete for around $5 million in awards in seventeen categories.” This year, 15-year-old Kalyani Ramadurgam, a Torrey Pines High School student, stood out among the competition in the Computer Science category for her work with facial recognition software. She received the ISEF Grand Award 3rd Place in Computer Science, winning $1,000. Citing the technological issues surrounding the identification of the Boston Marathon bombers as her inital motivation, Kalyani decided to develop a new facial recognition method, which would allow her to detect faces obscured or angled away from a camera. As the software used to recognize the bombing suspects could not depict the suspect’s faces unless they were looking direclty at the camera, Kalyani made an alternative which yielded a greater success rate. “Unlike traditional methods, which only look at the relationships between facial ratios, I combined information from both pixel patterns in the pictures and from independent facial features,” she said. Entitled “High Dimensional Clustering Algorithms Applied to Face Recognition of Obscured Faces,” Kalyani emphasized the importance of facial recognition software. “The applications of this project thus have wide implications to national security because real life videos and
photographs very rarely capture people facing the camera directly with their full face uncovered,” she stated. She hopes to develop an app that will use her technology to recognize faces that are concealed or difficult to identify.

TIPS ON HOW TO USE WATER WISELY THIS SUMMER
by TORI MORRISON
A
ccording to the City of San Diego, June 1 marked a change in the amount of irrigation time San Diegans are allotted in order to accommodate the demanding warmer days of summer. The City has declared, “From June 1 through Oct. 31, when the weather is hotter, the public must water their landscape prior to 10 a.m. in the morning, and not until after 6 p.m. in the evening, to lessen evaporation and get the most out of their water use.” Steps can also be made to conserve water within the household. Here are some tips on how to use water more efficiently at home.
1.
Plug the sink or bath instead of running the water to rinse your razor, or wait for the water to adjust to your desired temperature.
6.
Check your hoses, faucets and appliances regularly for leaks.
2.
Use your dishwasher. Dishwashers save more water and energy than washing dishes by hand. Energy Star dishwashers are more energy efficient than older models, so they end up reducing water waste. If washing dishes by hand, scrap food in the trash before washing, plug the sink, and then wash.
3.
Avoid playing with recreational water toys that require a considerable amount of water. Try water guns or water balloons for some fun in the sun.
4.
Instead of using the hose to clean sidewalks, garages and driveways, grab a broom.
5.
Recycle water. If you drop ice cubes, or need to get rid of water you used to steam vegetables, don’t waste it. You can use the water to feed plants, or turn the excess water into a soup.
54 • 92130Magazine.com • August | September 2014
7.
Place tissues into a trash can instead of flushing them.
8.
Purchase a plastic or aluminum water bottle. It will cut down on the amount of water you waste washing glasses.
9.
Wash your car on your lawn. That way your lawn will get watered at the same time.
10.
Join a community pool instead of wasting water on a personal pool at home.

HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY: SHEDDING NEW LIGHT ON AN OLD MYTH Are you a female between the ages of thirty to fifty years of age, wondering why you’re experiencing… • Migraines • Insomnia
• Mood Swings • Hot Flashes
• Weight Gain • Acne
• Fatigue • Decreased Sex Drive
Are you pre/post-menopausal and suffer symptoms because you fear estrogen or other hormone replacement therapies (HRTs) may lead to breast cancer? Or have you gone through menopause over ten years ago and think there is no need or benefit in HRTs? Do you think, or have you been told that these symptoms are just an expected sign of aging? How many of you see an eye doctor and ask to have the vision of a 70-year-old, when understandably we’d all like to have the vision of a 30-year-old? Why should treating hormone deficiencies be any different? Bio-identical hormone therapy may reduce cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, dementia, osteoporosis, hot flashes and many other conditions previously thought to be normal signs of aging. Did you know many of the concerns associated with HRTs have been linked to synthetic hormones Premarin and Provera (medroxyprogesterone) – NOT bio-identical hormones? Results of a French twelve-year study of 80,000 women showed NO increased cancer risk in women using bio-identical estrogen and progesterone therapies when compared to women using no hormones. Women using bio-identical HRT may enjoy relief from many of the pre/post-menopausal symptoms, both minor and major, once dosing of each hormone is in proper balance. Starting as early as your late 20’s and through to your late 40’s, females can start to significantly reduce the production of progesterone compared to estrogen, leading to what is known as “Estrogen Dominance.” Symptoms can include: • Irregular Menses • Insomnia • Mood Swings • Hot Flashes • Weight Gain of Hips and Thighs
• Breast Tenderness • Acne • Migraines
We urge those who are seeking information or just curious about what HRTs can do for them to call or come into Carmel Valley Pharmacy and speak with our staff. Many retail pharmacies don’t compound, so many patients are often times unaware of how compounded medication like HRTs can improve quality of life. For many, becoming educated can be the first step in a positive, life-improving direction. As society moves forward in scientific achievements it is time to throw out old ways of thinking and embrace new medical approaches that may allow us to live our lives to the fullest.

2014 Falcons Fall Sports Preview
T
he school year is upon us and Torrey Pines High School (TPHS) looks forward to another season of competition and success with our fine athletic programs. Our student athletes and coaches have been working hard all summer with the anticipation of something special. The fall sports season sees the return of five San Diego County CIF Championship teams. Girls volleyball, boys and
girls cross country, girls tennis, and girls golf were the best in the county last year and are looking to continue their success this year. In addition, boys water polo will follow a season in which they reached the championship, and our fine field hockey team will welcome a new coach. Finally, this football season we welcome our new coach Ron Gladnick who brings both experience and expertise to campus. After last
year’s winning season we expect the Falcon football tradition in Carmel Valley will continue under his leadership. Friday night lights will be exciting this fall as will being a part of all of the sports of TPHS. Our school appreciates all the support and encouragement the community passes on to our student athletes. ~ Matthew Livingston, Athletic Director

2014 Ravens Fall Sports Preview
T
he 2014-2015 school year is shaping up to be an exciting one for the Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) athletic programs. The next phase of our Prop AA construction work continues. This work will soon result in new practice and game fields along with the completion of our stadium. Each of our outdoor athletic programs will certainly benefit from this facility’s upgrade. CCA is coming off a very successful year in which it earned two CIF champions in addition
to having four other teams advance to a CIF title game and two others advance to the semifinals. Proudly, CCA has now captured four CIF titles during the past few years along with more than a dozen league championships. This fall our boys and girls cross country teams, field hockey teams, girls golf team, girls tennis team, girls volleyball team, and boys water polo squads are all looking forward to competing once again in the prestigious Palomar League. As the athletic director I am proud to say
Girls Golf
that CCA student-athletes dedicate themselves to becoming the best they can be, both in the classroom and in the sports arena. Our Ravens are true representatives of what competitive, hard-working, and thoughtful athletes should be. If You’re in the Homestretch Before Retirement, It’s Time to ‘Floor it’ by Richard H. Fogg, CFP®
As
people enter their 50s and early 60s, earnings from work or other income sources often begin to reach a peak. In many instances, this also happens at the same time some expenses decrease – people might not need to worry about college tuition costs for kids, or perhaps they paid off the home mortgage. Based on all of these factors, people may have more discretionary money available during this period than at any other time in life. You may or may not find yourself in this exact situation, but one thing is clear – the last decade or two you spend working is a great opportunity to build financial security for retirement. This fact seems to hit home as individuals reach their 50 th birthday. There is a greater sense of urgency about finding ways to stash more money away for retirement savings – either workplace plans like a 401(k) or other accounts such as an IRA. Whatever savings vehicle you use it makes sense to set aside as much money as possible to protect the ability to enjoy your desired lifestyle in retirement.
THOSE NEARING RETIREMENT HAVE A CHANCE TO ‘CATCH UP’ While tax laws may restrict how much money you can direct to a workplace savings plan or IRA on an annual basis, once you reach age 50, you have more flexibility. Provisions in the tax code allow for “catch-up” contributions to these types of tax-advantaged savings plans. Assuming you’ve earned sufficient income in 2014, those who will reach age 50 and older can contribute: • Up to $23,000 to a traditional 401(k), 403(b) or most 457 plans. By comparison those under age 50 are limited to contributions of no more than $17,500 per year. • Up to $14,500 to a SIMPLE 401(k) plan (compared to the standard limit of $12,000).
• As much as $6,500 per year to an IRA (either traditional or Roth IRA or a combination of the two). That’s $1,000 more than is allowed for those under age 50. The extra several thousand dollars you are allowed to invest in tax-deferred accounts can make a big difference if you take advantage of it year after year.
MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR CLOSING YEARS OF WORK Maximizing retirement plan contributions and other savings targeted for retirement funding is critical as your working life winds down. It represents the last best chance for you to accumulate wealth to achieve your financial goals for your post-working years. Here are some things you might want to consider doing:
• Contribute as much as you can to your workplace savings plan. If your employer offers a matching contribution, you’ll want to at least contribute enough to fully capitalize on the match. If possible, contribute the maximum amount allowed. • Add money to your IRA, and if possible try to build some money in a Roth IRA to take advantage of the potential of tax-free withdrawals later in life. • Set additional dollars aside in savings or brokerage accounts if you’ve maximized contributions to retirement accounts. There are many variables to think about when it comes to planning for retirement. Consider talking with a financial professional to help make sure you’re on track for your specific retirement goals.

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Is It a Good Time to Buy Real Estate?
I
nterest rates say “buy now”! The strong economic news boosted stocks at the expense of bonds. Since home loan rates are tied to mortgage bonds, both bond and home loan rates worsened last week. However, home loan rates remain attractive and near some of the best levels seen this year. Pending home sales jumped 6.1 percent from April to May. This was the largest monthly gain since April 2010, when buyers were chasing the homebuyer’s tax credit. The June Jobs Report showed that 288,000 new jobs were created, while the figures for April and May were revised higher by a total of 29,000. Through the first six months of 2014, job creations have averaged 231,000 jobs per month, a 19 percent increase from the same period in 2013. The unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent from an expected rate of 6.3 percent, matching the lowest level since September 2008, a decent report and a meaningful lift in labor market activity. Leslie Kilpatrick, President of the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors, wrote, “The market remains fundamentally strong with recent price gains, shortened market times and low interest rates. The number of active listings recently surpassed
7,000 for the first time in two years yet that only represents three months of inventory. Resale homes are on the market an average of a brief forty days. The median price point of single-family homes reached $500,000 in May for the first time in seven years. Underneath all that, we are facing a long term housing shortage and rising rents in a recovering economy. The time to invest in San Diego is now.” (Excerpt taken from www.utsandiego.com June 27, 2014: Has the next housing recession started? ) Call 858-243-5278 or email dan@conwayre.com, and we’ll find you the special home you’ve been looking for! hile San Diegans are no stranger to experiencing wildfire, we are incredibly grateful to have such responsive and fast-acting emergency services in our neighborhoods. In recognition of their work to protect homes during the Bernardo Fire this past May, City Councilman Mark Kersey and the Peñasquitos Emergency Response Council hosted a Thank You BBQ for San Diego’s first responders. Surrounded by food and friends, residents were able to come out and personally thank their first responders for their hard work. Councilman Kersey, San Diego Police Department Chief Shelley Zimmerman, and San Diego Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief Brian Fennessy were all in attendance. If you see a firefighter, police officer, or EMT around your neighborhood, shake their hand and tell them thanks for continuing to keep your neighborhood safe.
