Downsizing…
F
Derrick Breaux Publisher
or the past six years, my family and I have lived in the same house. This might not sound like anything out of the ordinary. In fact, it may sound quite normal. However, after taking out a notepad and spending some time putting the pencil to the paper, I came to the realization of a few things. For starters, this was the 23rd house that I have called home. With all of the moving around you would think that I was raised in a military family, but most of the moves were actually the product of my parents climbing the corporate ladder over the years. After further review, I calculated that this was the longest that I have ever lived in one house. In terms of square footage, it is also the largest house that I have ever called home. Over the years, we have been blessed with a growing family and plenty of visitors – both short-term and long-term. Before my mother passed away in 2010, she had a room at our house. For several years when my brother was touring the world with his rock band, he also had a room to come home to for short stays. Our kids referred to it as Tyler’s room even though he only used it a couple months a year. With our daughter recently moving out (well, sort of) and living in the dorms this year, my wife and I started discussing the possibility of downsizing. We recently pulled the trigger and made the move to my 24th house – a smaller home. Still having our two little kiddos at home, we weren’t brave enough to downsize in number of bedrooms, but we reduced our square footage by nearly 40% with this move. I’m still trying to figure out if reducing our square footage is the same thing as reducing our carbon footprint. Probably not! Preparing for any move can be a daunting task. Preparing for a move to a smaller house was downright overwhelming and consuming. I am amazed at how much “stuff” our family has accumulated over the past decade. We have spent the better part of a month making trips to the Salvation Army and the Goodwill donation centers. I’m on a first name basis with a couple of the kind employees that work there. My wife and I have decided to use this move as a family project – I’ll stop short of calling it a learning experience because that gives it more credit than necessary. The word “purge” has become a common conversational theme with our kids. Although they don’t like parting ways with the toys that they haven’t touched in years – but somehow fall in love with all over again when they find them tucked away in a closet or box – they are somewhat satisfied knowing that the unused toys are being donated, and children that may not have as many toys will get to play with them. We reinforce this with our kids each time we visit the donation centers, and I personally feel a certain sense of “parental” accomplishment in doing so. Even though we aren’t quite finished with our moving and purging at the time that I am writing this, it sure does feel great to know that we are entering into the New Year a lot lighter than before. It feels good to get rid of some excess and simplify things. All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

STORIES OF FAMILY STORY 1: THEY MEET
THE BOODMAN BROOD HAS TALES TO TELL IN CARMEL COUNTRY HIGHLANDS
Stacy and Dave Boodman met in high school at a Jewish youth group called B’nai B’rith Youth Organization. They started dating soon after that (with one adventure together on Judge Wapner’s People’s Court in 1992. They won a case called Mitsubishi Mash and had great fun on the show with Judge Wapner) and married soon after graduating from UC San Diego. “We have known each other more than half of our lives,” Stacy shared, “and we love each other more now than when we got married.” Dave continued, “We have the same high school, college, and family friends and it’s really special to know someone so deeply like that.”
STORY 2: WHERE TO GO? by KELLEY GUSICH photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
The Boodmans chose to live in Carmel Country Highlands. Besides the central location, Stacy’s real estate business is there along with the children’s dance studio. They also love the blue ribbon, award-winning Ocean Air Elementary School. (Go Principal Stanley!)

STORY 3: THE KIDS Ellie Boodman turned 11 in January and is in 5th grade at Ocean Air. She is a manager of Zoo Crew at school and loves art and art club. She dances five days a week at Inspired Movement Dance and Performing Arts and is on their competition dance team. Danielle Boodman (also known as the "Lucky 7s Baby" because she was born on 7/27/07 at 7:17 a.m. weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces) is seven, in 2nd grade at Ocean Air, and loves bike riding and animals of all kinds. She dances six days a week at Inspired Movement and is also on the competition team. Both girls volunteer monthly for seniors, the homeless, and the environment. The third daughter in the Boodman family is Dakota – a rescue Lab mix.
STORY 4: FAMILY FUN As a family, the Boodmans vacation regularly (New York City, Phoenix, Big Bear, Yosemite, and Pismo Beach), but at home they love hiking the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, biking, eating dinner together, and keeping a puzzle going on the coffee table – the perfect location to gather and talk. Oh, and don’t forget 1980s movie night! When asked about the best part of parenthood, Stacy and Dave responded, “The best part is helping raise kids that will be loving contributors to our society and our planet. It’s also about the hugs, kisses, love, and the moments when you see your children grow and blossom beyond their expectations.” ¢

Remembering Larry Himmel
HONORING THE MEMORY OF SAN DIEGO’S BELOVED REPORTER photo by Spark Photography
L
arry Himmel, longtime KFMB/Channel 8 reporter, television broadcaster, San Diego personality, and close friend to ZCode Media, recently passed away after his brave battle with cancer. Larry had been a loyal local reporter for the station since 1979, bringing an unparalleled sense of humor and artistry to the air. The news of Larry’s passing spread during Channel 8’s 11 p.m. broadcast in which Larry’s co-workers reminisced and shared stories about their time with him. As a reporter, Larry was larger than life and extremely well-respected in his field. He is known as one of the best feature reporters in his industry and is the recipient of over a dozen Emmy Awards. He was the type of reporter that went above and beyond to deliver a story. During the 2007 wildfires, Larry gained national attention for famously reporting in front his burning home in 92127. In 2012, when 92127 Magazine’s cover feature included Larry, his family and his story of that day, he discussed the events that led up to the chilling and heartbreaking live report. A friend of the ZCode Media family, Larry was a supporter of the local magazines and community news as a whole. Known for his quirky and off-beat video stories, he featured ZCode’s magazines in a report about the five year anniversary of the Witch Creek Fire. CBS has produced a touching video tribute to Larry on its site. It can be accessed at www.cbs8.com/story/26867145/remembering-larry-himmel. Guests are encouraged to sign the guest book in honor of one of San Diego’s legendary reporters.

majority of actors have stunt doubles to perform aerial cartwheels or back flips in action scenes. Ashley Cynkin, who’s in sixth grade at Sage Canyon Elementary, dreams of the future and elaborated, “I’ll always be a black belt and practice martial arts. I’d love to be an actress in action movies doing my own stunts.” Hollywood, here she comes. Ashley’s older brother and inspiration, David, began Taekwondo before her. Since she was at the studio often, she naturally joined just before turning

three. “It wasn’t always an easy road for me and I almost quit on several occasions when I was younger,” she revealed. “We’re very lucky to have the top coaches in the country here in Carmel Valley. My coaches, Mrs. Trish Church, Sr. Master Church, Ciel Solwazi, and Chris Hollingsworth have helped me to build both the skills and confidence needed to be a top competitor.” You might be surprised she’s a second-degree black belt. Ashley loves fashion and glitz and suggested, “Some people don’t think someone so girly and glittery can be tough and competitive.” Ashley is ranked in the World Top Ten standings in three events. She won the World Championship in Traditional Weapons in 2011. And that’s just the icing. She holds seven State Championship and two District titles. Last year, her coaches put together a demo team that competed at Nationals, which is held each fall at the ESPN Sports Center at Disneyworld. The four-person team, which included Ashley and her brother, David, won. This qualified them to compete on the global stage. Taekwondo is an individual sport, so team competition brings a new synergy to the art. “I enjoy hearing how loud the crowd is when we compete as a team together,” added Ashley. As she completes her last year at Sage Canyon Elementary – she likes science and art – with a nod to fashion design as a possible career. Ashley also sings, acts, and takes tumbling at Flip Force in Mira Mesa. She reflected, “It’s hard to find the time to balance everything, but it’s been a great lesson for me to discover what I’m capable of.” She loves the beaches, being outdoors, and her native Carmel Valley. Her awards and accolades continue, but more importantly, she possesses stamina and creativity as she shapes a fantastic future. ¢

Assistance Dog Connects Two 92130 Families CANINE COMPANIONS FOR INDEPENDENCE CREATES LIFETIME BONDS
C
anine Companions for Independence, a nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support, recently celebrated a Canine Companions for Independence graduation ceremony. At the event, 92130 resident Jason Gacksteter received Taran II, an assistance dog from another 92130 family. Jason has cerebral palsy, which requires him to have a wheelchair, and with Taran as a guide and conversation starter, Jason feels more at ease. According to Jason’s family, Jason is smart, funny, and insightful beyond his years, however his disability sometimes gets in his way, and as a result, he cannot share those gifts with others. This is where Taran comes in. “With Taran I am not alone,” Jason shared. “The beautiful, well-behaved Labrador/Golden Retriever captures people’s attention and it’s easier to start a conversation with them.” Willie Crawford, Taran’s volunteer puppy raiser who also resides in 92130, expressed his enthusiasm for the match, “My husband and I have known Jason and his family for many years. We were thrilled to learn Taran was matched with Jason! We couldn’t be more proud.” Taran is Jason’s second assistance dog from Canine Companions for Independence. He received assistance dog Marisa when he was only six years old. “The assistance dogs draw people to him,” said Nancy, Jason’s mom. “People his own age come up to Jason to talk to him about his dog. It changes people’s perception of him. Instead of thinking he’s the kid in the wheelchair, they think he’s the kid with the amazing dog.”

When she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, she painted to express her emotions during treatment. “I am fantasizing on this difficult journey and trying to create imagination into a landscape of beauty,” revealed Boutia. “Ocean, flowers, and fish are the motifs in my paintings, signifying life and happiness but promising no eternity.” My Journey, her mermaid collection, is a tribute benefiting the National Breast Cancer Society. Carmel Valley has been home for the past decade, though she’s lived in several countries. She was born in Iran. She moved to London for art school and graduated in 1982 with a B.A. from Middlesex University. “As a young kid, I was always painting in my spare time,” shared Boutia. But her father, a medical doctor, believed then that art was a hobby and not a profession. “I was determined to follow my heart,” she added. When she met her future husband in New York City, they married in 1996, and moved to Manhattan for eight years. Soon after their son Batisse was born, she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. They moved here for the climate when living in New York began to be more difficult for her. While in New York she learned to adapt her art with a new family, in a new city, and with managing arthritis, so she studied

at Parsons Art School and mastered digital art. Her work was commissioned by MetLife and was sold privately. She also designed patterns on printed tees. She has exhibited in shows from ArtExpo New York to Worldwide Art L.A., and was a member of Del Mar Gallery. Three of her paintings have received online recognition by Artavita Gallery and Light Space and Time Gallery. She was selected to participate in the ART San Diego Contemporary Art Show this past fall. “Don’t let anyone tell you that your art is not good enough,” advised Boutia. “Be prepared to listen to any criticism but not necessarily accept it. If you feel it is right, just follow your aspiration and pursue your skill.” Paint brush aside, Boutia enjoys supporting Batisse’s basketball games. She cherishes a walk along the shoreline, great cinema, and the impact she has in communicating emotion through her fine art. ¢

The Yoga Liaison Hubert Pilloud Aims to Make Yoga Available to Everyone by LINDA FRABL | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography
H
ubert Pilloud was born and raised in Switzerland and became a fighter pilot and instructor with the Swiss Air Force. He then took a job as a liaison officer for the Swiss government, which allowed him to move to America. After being transferred to San Diego in 2008 and moving to Carmel Valley, Hubert recalled, “My new assignment was a blessing because San Diego is where I discovered yoga, which has transformed my life.” That transformation motivated Hubert to become the founder/CEO of the Hanumanity Foundation, which aims to make yoga available and affordable for everyone, especially those who are less fortunate and/or with special needs. Hubert elaborated, “Many people or communities do not have access to yoga due to their remote location or financial constraints, and we want to make sure that everyone can experience the benefits of yoga – not only the physical practice of yoga, but also the philosophy, the mediation, the breathing, and the nutrition.” As a fighter pilot, Hubert developed severe back and neck pain due to his body’s constant exposure to high g-forces. But after five years of practicing yoga, he has completely healed! Yoga also gave Hubert a much-needed calmness to his existence. He explained, “My life was always in supersonic speed, goal-oriented, driven, and with a go-go-go mindset, leaving me no time to stop and experience the present moment. But the more I practiced yoga, the more my awareness expanded around the true meaning of life and the importance of mindfulness in the present moment.” In addition to his involvement with the Hanumanity Foundation, Hubert, who owns a yellow lab named Bodhi, is also involved with the Pet Therapy Program at La Jolla’s Scripps Hospital. Plus, he has spent two summers in Montana helping the Howling Wolf Ranch Foundation (aka the Wounded Warrior Foundation). He also volunteers with the Armed Services YMCA, teaching yoga and assisting at the surf clinic for injured soldiers. As for his proudest moments with the Hanumanity Foundation, Hubert proclaimed, “My simple joy is when participants say ‘thank you’ with a joyful and peaceful face at the end of a yoga class. They’re happy to be present, and I see them again on the mat the following week. That means that we have done something right and that yoga is helping them and enhancing their quality of life.” ¢

Sitting Down with Carmel Valley Actor Ben Reed 92130 RESIDENT SHARES EXPERIENCES ABOUT STARRING IN NEW FILM, AMERICAN SNIPER photo by BOBBY QUILLARD
F
or 92130 resident Ben Reed, acting is a journey fueled by life experiences. The Bixby, OK native began pursuing an acting career after graduating from West Virginia University. He then packed up his car and drove to Los Angeles, where he began studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. However, for Reed, life has been his best acting coach. “I have to say most of my training has come from living life. As we all know, life is a roller coaster of highs and lows,” he elaborated. “You get lifted up to amazing heights one day and the next day you can get kicked in the teeth.” Reed has acted in various TV shows and films throughout the years, one of the most recent being American Sniper. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film stars Bradley Cooper – who produced the film as well – and Sienna Miller and tells the tale of Chris Kyle, the most decorated sniper in military history. Ben plays Chris Kyle’s father, Wayne, who teaches Chris about important life values and discipline and greatly impacts his life. “American Sniper was an honor for me to be a part of. The film is very powerful with a well written script, direction, and an incredible performance by Bradley Cooper,” shared Reed. As for the future, Reed will continue to act, produce films, and spend time with this family in Carmel Valley. “I have two other film projects I’m working on to star in and produce. And I’m up for a couple of films as we speak,” he stated. “Also, being an actor and having five kids keeps me busy. It’s never boring at my house.”

:::: FROM THE DENTIST
THE
PURSUIT OF
EXCELLENCE by DR. JESSY SIDHU
Dentistry has never been as exciting as it is today. The ability of dentists to save and restore the health of your teeth and mouth cannot be understated. However, there is one caveat. Is your dentist using a surgical operating microscope to help save your teeth? After all, your dentist can only treat what he or she can see. This is why I have now incorporated surgical microscopes in my routine practice in Del Mar and Solana Beach. In the last 14 years of practicing dentistry, I have always asked myself if I could be doing things better for my patients. Could I be providing more comprehensive, precise, and detailed care? With the advent and advancements in dental materials, so too have the techniques in placing and utilizing these materials improved. By not abiding to these new specific protocols and techniques dental materials and restorations can prematurely fail. By using a surgical microscope I can now see things at a level of detail which can’t be seen by the naked eye or even magnification glasses known as loupes. This is truly amazing! It has given me the confidence in knowing that my work is being performed at the highest standard. In short, all of my patients will benefit. PLEASE CALL TODAY FOR YOUR COMPREHENSIVE EXAM OR COMPLIMENTARY SECOND OPINION.

Where to begin? I can't say enough positive things about Inspired Movement. My daughters have been dancing for 5 years and I didn't know how amazingly perfect the experience could be until we came to this studio. Miss Jenna is super organized, and clearly passionate about what she does. It shines though with every fiber ofher being. The entire staff is that way. The studio is clean, the environment is positive, the dancers are all happy and supportive. The technique training the children are gaining is top notch. And most of all the dancers are having fun! Voices for Children Seeks Volunteers
Voices for Children, a local nonprofit working to transform the lives of abused children, is looking for volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). A CASA is a trained volunteer matched with a child in the foster care system – the CASA gets to know the child, researches their particular situation, and advocates on the child’s behalf in court. CASAs often become one of the only stable adult presences in the foster children’s lives. Anyone with a willingness to help can become a CASA as long as they’re over 21 and have 10 to 15 hours per month to devote to the child. Voices for Children is particularly seeking men and Spanish speakers to volunteer. Visit www.speakupnow.org for more information.

Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotary’s Big Donation Members of the Del MarSolana Beach Rotary Club recently delivered 820 dictionaries to third grade students in 11 public schools covering Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Carmel Valley. The dictionaries will not only give the students the ability to work with a reference book but also the joy of owning and writing in their very own books. According to the Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotary Club, “The goal is to assist all students in becoming active readers, good writers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their very own personal dictionary to use at school and at home.” Although a number of these students have tablets or computers, they’ve found the dictionaries very helpful and fun to work with. “Thank you for taking the time to donate dictionaries to our third graders. We definitely use them during Language Arts and building our vocabulary,” shared Mariebelle Oliva, a third grade teacher at Ashley Falls Elementary.

Before American Idol, Jessica represented San Diego on shows like Showtime at the Apollo and America’s Got Talent. While a contestant on American Idol, Jessica experienced an outpour of love and support from neighborhoods all over San Diego. After making it to the final two on the show, Jessica eventually signed a record deal with Interscope records and recently released a new song “This Love.” “The fact that I get to put out something that’s all my own is so exciting,” she gushed. “Music has always been what I want to do with my life, and these songs are all me.”
92130 Resident Shares Toy Collection
George Dixon is a pop culture junkie who never lost his taste for toys. He has an extensive collection consisting of toys ranging from classic TV shows to WWF wrestling, Star Wars, superheroes, and even Funko Pops! George started collecting at an early age and never stopped. He shared some of his insight on this hobby, “I guess it takes me back to a time where life was simple and fun, before we had a mortgage, electricity bills, phone bills, car payments, etc.” He continued, “Holding a small action figure in my hand took me to places that only my imagination could reach, but fast-forward into today’s world and you might begin to understand that having a ‘different’ sort of hobby, if you will, might not be such a bad thing after all.” For the past several years, George has shared his passion with the 92130 community with a toy display at the Carmel Valley Library. The toy and collectibles display will be up for the month of March in observance of WonderCon Anaheim.

CCA Graduate Performs on Letterman
Canyon Crest Academy graduate Ryn Weaver, who graduated in 2010, recently performed on the Late Show with David Letterman. Ryn is widely considered one of 2015’s artists to watch. During the summer of 2014, Ryn’s song, “OctaHate,” a wild and powerful pop tune, received high acclaim. She is currently taking steps to push the song onto the mainstream radar. Her pop performance on the Late Show with David Letterman was her television debut, and she was more than grateful. She tweeted, “...So thankful for the opportunity. Love you all!” Other high-profilers that made an appearance on the show that evening included actress Amanda Peet. The song “OctaHate” also now has a video, which was directed by Goodwin and features Ryn in various poses and outfits as herself and then younger as a little girl or Ryn’s inner child.
Del Mar Pines School’s Mural Wins Award
Del Mar Pines School created a school-wide mural for the Wyland “Water is Life” National Art Competition and won in the K-4 category. Tanya Robinson, Art Instructor, expressed the school’s enthusiasm, “We are honored to win this prestigious award and pleased it was for such an important topic. This year’s theme was Our Ocean. While each student communicates their own interpretation of the theme, all 145 students collaborated to create one mural, promoting the protection of our oceans.” The concept for the mural was designed by Mr. Robinson and Del Mar Pines intern Marissa Woytowitz, a Del Mar Pines School graduate and current Torrey Pines High School student. The mural draws attention to the diminishing number of female sea turtles in our oceans. The Spanish message “Protect It” signifies the importance of Californians collaborating with Mexico to help protect the sea turtles from extinction and reach out to this region’s large Hispanic population.

The award recognizes Maienschein’s commitment to assist small business owners and organizations, based on his responsiveness to the business community and his role in legislation that supports small businesses. The awards dinner was held at the Park Hyatt Aviara Hotel, where Maienschein is pictured with his two daughters, Taylin and Brenna, and Nick Anastasopoulos, owner of Athens Market Café and member of the California Small Business Association. Anastasopoulos is also a former officer of the association’s board of directors. According to recent data, California’s small businesses employ over a third of the entire state’s workforce, highlighting the importance of small businesses to the state’s economic recovery.

armel Valley Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics is a child-focused practice with a warm, friendly, and professional atmosphere. “Dr. Grant and I opened the office in 2006 when we recognized the community needed a more comprehensive approach to children’s dental care. We welcomed Dr. Lugtu and Dr. Fard to the team in early 2012, and they have been a wonderful addition,” said Dr. Pham. The office offers Board Certified Specialists in both pediatric dentistry and orthodontics, a distinction that requires two to three years additional training after dental school. According to Dr. Pham, having two specialties at the same location offers parents more convenience and flexibility when scheduling their appointments. “We can also provide a higher level of comprehensive

dental care, coordinating dental health needs with the growth of the jaws and bones,” explained Dr. Pham. The office embraces technology because it makes the patient experience more comfortable and less invasive. They use child-size X-rays and child-friendly instruments and equipment, as well as provide headsets at each dental chair and flatmounted TVs for children to enjoy during their visit. Drs. Pham, Lugtu, and Fard are dedicated to educating their patients and their parents in preventative oral health care and to educating themselves on the latest technologies and equipment. “We only want what is best for our patients, and we really believe it shows. We work hard to ensure the comfort of our patients and strive to create a friendly environment that will have children wanting to come back,” related Dr. Pham. SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT
MEET THE TEAM DR. CHRIS PHAM Dr. Pham comes from a family of dentists, all of whom practice in Northern California. “I have a big family and have always loved working with kids. I enjoy watching the kids grow up and watching their smiles mature,” said Dr. Pham.

What is the history behind CCA’s swim and dive team? Canyon Crest Academy’s swim team started in 2005 with about 25 athletes who wanted to do high school swimming to stay in shape for high school water polo. The dive team started in 2011. Ten years later, CCA swim and dive is now one of the main contenders for the Division II CIF title with top county swimmers and divers attending our school.
Which league is the team part of? CCA is part of the Palomar League.
What is the history behind your career as an athlete and coach? I started swimming at age five and finished my career after making finals at the 2004 Athens Olympics. I coached a master’s team in San Diego from 2005 to 2010. I got involved with CCA as head coach in 2008 and founded San Diego Elite Swim in 2009. Currently, I serve as the aquatics director at the Bay Club Carmel Valley, where I’ve worked since 2010. I am also on the coaching staff at that location for PAC swim team.
Tell us about the coaching staff and what they bring to the team.
season she had three divers in the top three at CIF. Her knowledge and passion for the sport helped our team get to the level it is now. Megan Milder has been the assistant coach for the last four years.
How long have you been head coach and what inspired you to take this position? One of my former clients’ sons was a student at CCA. The school was looking for a new coach in 2008, so he asked me if I was willing to help. I wanted to give back to the sport of swimming as it brought so much to my life.
What is the most rewarding aspect about coaching? The most challenging? The most rewarding aspect is definitely having athletes beat all expectations and stay with the sport past high school. The most challenging aspect is the 5:30 a.m. daily practices.
When does the spring season begin and where are practices held? It starts mid-February and ends the last week of May with state championships. We practice in the mornings at Cathedral Catholic High School.
Jamie Pearce is our dive coach. She started with a novice team three years ago, and last

What swim events does the school participate in? We have dual meets within the Palomar League. We will participate at the Sundevil Varsity Invitational and Sundevil Junior Varsity Invitational. The 2015 season will finish in May with Palomar, CIF, and state championships. The top three San Diego swimmers will make the team for state championships.
Are there any standout athletes to look out for this season? Garrett Schmid, Anthony Kang, Tracy Chen, Zender and Brendan Santana, Leah and Shelby Buford.
Please provide us with an outlook for the team this year. What are your expectations for the upcoming season? I have some hefty goals and expectations for this year. My team goals are to defend our Palomar title, to win CIF, and to qualify 6 to 12 athletes to state championships.
What awards/accolades/recognition has the team achieved over the years? We were Valley League champions numerous times before we were invited to the Palomar League two years ago. We won Palomar League and the Sundevils Invitational for the first time in 2014.
Please tell us about the team’s current record. Our boys team had seven wins and one loss in dual meets in 2014 and was runner up at CIF. Our girls team finished third at CIF.
Are there any athletes on the team that currently hold a school record for a swim or dive event? We had 13 school records out of 22 broken in 2014. All but two swimmers and divers will be returning this year.
Are there any local students who have gone on to participate on a collegiate and/or professional level? Some freshman swimmers and divers at the Naval Academy. We also have had students graduate and participate with swim and dive programs at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the Air Force, UC San Diego, and more.
How do you stress the importance of academics to the student athletes?
Tell us about the support you receive from parents, volunteers, and the community.
Academics is a top priority for students at CCA. I understand the importance of balancing academics and athletics correctly and I help our student athletes maintain this balance. CCA swimmers and divers most often have the highest GPA out of all sports teams in San Diego County, so I have rarely dealt with any academic issues.
We have awesome parents that help run the team. Supporters include Amy Seki, Laurie Schmid, the Schade family, and the Wiggins family. Most parents understand that the team needs volunteers and are willing to give their time and money to help support the kids and the sport.
Do you have any upcoming events, fundraisers, or tournaments that you would like to share with our readers?
What’s the most exciting part about working with the team? The best thing about CCA’s swim and dive team is this upcoming season!
The 2015 Sundevil Varsity Invitational will be held on March 21. The Torrey Pines High School, Cathedral Catholic High School, and Canyon Crest Academy tri-meet is always a fun event as well. CCA swim and dive is a selffunded program, so any donation to the CCA foundation for the teams is greatly appreciated.

What is the history behind Torrey Pines High School’s swim and dive team? When was the sport started? Which league is the team part of? The program has been around since the 1970s. We have split time between the Palomar and Avocado Leagues. Historically, we’ve always had a strong team in absence of our own pool and often without the benefit of a diving team.
Tell us about the coaching staff and what they bring to the team. K.C. Tudor, our diving coach, has been with us for seven years. He is also the coach at Cathedral Catholic High School. The junior varsity coach is typically an ex-swimmer of TPHS. I have been with the TPHS swim team since 1995, working different positions. I’ve been the head coach since 2003. I have over 20 years of experience coaching competitive swimming and 18 years of experience coaching high school swimmers.
When does the spring season begin and where are practices held? Our season begins on Feb. 20 and we currently practice at the Boys & Girls Club of San Dieguito in Solana Beach.
Which swim events does the school participate in? Our dual meet season consists of two to three non-league meets and six league meets, as well as one varsity invitational and one junior varsity invitational. We also participate in a league championship meet and the CIF Division I championship meet.
Are there any standout athletes to look out for this season? Yes! On the girls team the outstanding returnees are Katherine Lauerman, Julee KeenanRivers, Bella Boese, Pina Simone, and Lindsey Anderson. On the boys team our outstanding returnees are Stephen Park, Daniel Ines, Ryan Parker, and Noah Ayers.
Please provide us with an outlook for the team this year. What are your expectations for the upcoming season? Our teams, both boys and girls, will contend for the league title and the CIF Division I titles. I expect us to be very competitive. The main goal is that we all do our best, have a positive experience, and learn something in the process.

What awards/accolades/recognition has the team achieved over the years? The teams have won numerous CIF titles, 9 out of 11 in my years as the head coach. The girls have claimed more CIF Division I titles than the boys. Both the girls and the boys teams were dual champions in 2001 and 2011. Our swimmers have achieved numerous all-American standards and have been awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships.
Please tell us about the team’s current record. Currently, the girls have won four consecutive CIF titles. The boys team won the title in 2011 and regularly finishes in the top three at CIF.
Are there any athletes on the team that currently hold a school record for a swim or dive event? Yes. The current squad probably only has swimmers that have achieved a school record on relays, but the squad is young and they are contending with an esteemed set of records.
How do you stress the importance of academics to the student athletes? Academics come first. Most of the kids who participate on the swim team are good students
and maintain high academic standards in the classroom. We have had student-athletes compete at Division I schools such as USC, Harvard, Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo, MIT, and UC Davis.
Do you have any upcoming events, fundraisers, or tournaments that you would like to share with our readers? Yes! The rummage sale, the Mt. Carmel High School Dual meet, and our CIF Division I championship meet. Visit www.tphsaquatics.com/ swim for more information.
Tell us about the support you receive from parents, volunteers, and the community. Our parents are amazing supporters. The TPHS Foundation is among the best in San Diego, if not the state of California. The support we receive is valuable and helps us to maintain the high standard of quality within the program.
Please tell us about one of the most memorable moments either coaching or watching the swim and dive team.
to fry,” but when it comes to the CIF title, they circle the wagons, sharpen their focus, and go for the win. More often than not they come out on top.
What’s the best thing about the swim and dive team? The reverence the kids have for the history and legacy of our program.
I love to see the kids improve. Winning is not the most important thing, but the teams understand the legacy of success that the program has and they really want to perpetuate it. Many of them have other aspirations and bigger “fish

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS by TORI MORRISON | photos by Robert Benson
O
wner/Director of Outpost Summer Camps Stuart Jones grew up at an outdoor summer camp, Tom Sawyer Camps, when he was younger. “We hiked, rode horses, made forts, sang songs, performed skits, got muddy, and learned how to make and keep friends with both the campers and counselors,” he explained. He spent 14 summers there as a camper, counselor, and director, and then decided to start his own venture, Outpost Summer Camps in 2002. Since its inception, Outpost’s enrollment has grown from 25 campers in its first year to over 1,200 campers attending in 2014. Outpost Summer Camps offers three traditional camp programs to children between the ages of 3 and 14, serving Carmel Valley and surrounding areas. According to Stuart, “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Three-week long sessions are what make Outpost Summer Camps truly unique. Stuart explained, “In this amount of time children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Children are able to form genuine relationships while at camp, and in this way Outpost is like a resident camp but in a day camp format. Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association and has also received Markel Insurance’s coveted Safety First designation for many consecutive seasons with a perfect safety record. With this type of reputation, the camp has
attracted camp professionals from all over the country who have visited the program to witness the traditional programming and staff training at work. Another hallmark of the camp’s uniqueness is the door-to-door transportation. Campers are picked up at their homes each morning, driven to camp, and dropped off at the end of the day. “Our families often tell us that the ride to and from, which consists of songs and adventure, is one of their children’s favorite parts of the Outpost experience,” Stuart explained. “Our drivers are also our counselors and that makes the camp experience something special and unique, as kids are used to being driven around by their parents.” Stuart and his wife both have degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. Stuart elaborated, “Our staff are trained to get to know each camper, to create an environment in which each one is encouraged to participate fully, play happily, meet new friends, develop those relationships, and have fun.” Outpost Summer Camps is deeply invested in North County’s communities as well. The organization donates individual three-week sessions to over 50 elementary and middle school foundations in 4S Ranch, Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Santaluz, Scripps Ranch, and surrounding areas. that level of empathy, we approach each patient with a very high level of compassion. Overall we know that our success is in providing a level of customer service that far exceeds our competition.” Customers rave about the way the pharmacy personalizes their experience. According to Tarek, the community admires the beauty of the store, the efficiency, and the attentiveness. Tarek and his staff go above and beyond to ensure their customers are well informed about their prescriptions, and the result is a very personal and positive experience for all. “It was our goal to have this effect on the community and because of it, the word is spreading and the growth has been gradually increasing. It gives my employees and myself so much satisfaction when we see how happy our patients are with the service we provide,” shared Tarek. The pharmacy service includes offering specialized “compounded” medications, which are necessary when a medication’s strength, dosage form, or ingredient is no longer available by the drug manufacturers. Tarek said, “We can compound the medication to the exact specification of your doctor; that also includes veterinary medicine for pets.” Carmel Valley Pharmacy also provides a same-day home delivery service and accepts all major insurance plans. Tarek concluded, “I am very eager to learn the needs of the community, whether it be specific herbal medications, immunizations, sport injury rehab or prevention, or gift/boutique items.” So the next time you need your prescription filled, visit this wonderful new pharmacy, and enjoy the quick, courteous attention you’ll receive.
ost of us have waited forever to see a doctor, and then been forced to wait even longer for our prescriptions. Although there are no shortages of big-box, chain-store pharmacies, their usual delays with getting prescriptions filled make us long for a magical place where a friendly, knowledgeable pharmacist can quickly fill our orders – or better yet, have them delivered directly to our homes. Lo and behold, Carmel Valley Pharmacy, owned by Tarek El-Ansary, is the answer to our prayers. Opened in December of 2013, Carmel Valley Pharmacy was born out of the neighborhood’s need for friendly convenience. Carmel Valley resident Tarek explained, “I’ve heard many neighbors express their extreme frustration when dealing with the chain pharmacies in the area. Name of Pharmacy: Carmel Valley Pharmacy They would compare it to going to the DMV – ‘a necessary but negative Owner: Tarek El-Ansary, Pharm.D. experience.’ When they found out I owned and ran a pharmacy in East Years in Position: 16 years as pharmacist County, they wished I would open a pharmacy here. While it’s great to see students’ scores improve, the greatest reward is seeing their confidence and excitement toward math increase.” – Center Director Jan
Catch Up. Keep Up. Get Ahead. Mathnasium of Carmel Valley Helps Students Leap Ahead in Math by TORI MORRISON | photos by Tyler McElhaney
At
Mathnasium of Carmel Valley, instructors focus on teaching math in a way that makes sense to the student. They believe that anyone can do math. Equally important, they believe that math should be fun. As the center director, Jan shared, “Most kids don’t really hate math. They hate not being good at it. So we strive to make students believe that they can understand challenging math concepts, and we follow through by using different teaching approaches until we find one that makes sense to them. There really is no secret formula. We generally find that math success is simply a combination of caring instructors, a fun atmosphere, customized math instruction, and hard work on each student’s part.” Jan elaborated, “Some students come in lacking confidence and feeling defeated by math. But after a few weeks, they start to believe in themselves and their ability to understand difficult math concepts. At the same time, we have students that love math and are looking to further advance. After a brief period, they’re able to work through concepts one or two grade levels above their current level. While it’s great to see students’ scores improve, the
greatest reward is seeing their confidence and excitement toward math increase.” When a student first starts, Mathnasium of Carmel Valley goes through a system of identifying the specific foundational math concepts holding the student back. They then use this to build a customized learning plan for each student. This helps the student become more productive and immediately addresses the concepts most critical to them. Mathnasium of Carmel Valley focuses only on math. This allows them to hire instructors that are uniquely strong in math. All of their instructors are math or engineering majors. And this supports another facet of their program. All of the math instruction is done in the center under the guidance of the instructors. This is a key point. In Mathnasium of Carmel Valley, the instructors do the teaching, not the worksheets. This allows them to focus on teaching the concepts first rather than just memorizing algorithms or facts. A typical session consists of a warm-up activity with an instructor who then goes over the lessons for the day. Following this, the student and instructor then work on their long-term learning plan for about 30 to 40 minutes. In the last 20 to 30 minutes, the instructor helps the

student complete homework or prepare for a test. Sometimes the session will end in a math or logic game. And through every step of the process, a math instructor is eager to answer any questions or concerns. Mathnasium of Carmel Valley understands that when math makes sense to students a transformation takes place – students are more confident, their grades improve, and their overall progress in school increases. “We believe that anyone can be good at math,” shared Jan. And, with the math instruction at Mathnasium of Carmel Valley, students can be.

WHALE WATCHING Gray Whales Travel Through San Diegan Waters on Their Winter Migration by LAINEY KRAL
S
urfers and sailors aren’t the only ones who enjoy San Diego’s offshore playground, even in the depths of winter. Every year the eastern Pacific population of gray whales travels in small groups down the North American coastline towards the warm lagoons of the Baja California peninsula. Their annual voyage is considered the longest migration of any mammal. San Diegans are lucky to be able to witness this incredible venture – many gray whales can be seen here from midDecember through January, and from February through April on the return journey north. Gray whales typically span 49 feet in length and can weigh up to 40 tons. They can be recognized by distinctive light gray patterns on their dark gray skin. They also have a series of raised bumps on their backs, known as a dorsal ridge, rather than a dorsal fin. Gray whales live in two populations on either side of the Pacific – the western population is critically endangered with approximately 130 individuals, while the eastern population off the North American coastline has over 20,000 individuals. The eastern population spends much of the year in Alaskan waters in between migrations to Baja California. Want to see our giant visitors for yourself? There are plenty of ways to do so by land or sea. If you’re watching from shore, try to schedule your viewing between mid-December and mid-February, when

the whales travel closer to land. Great spots include the Birch Aquarium, Cabrillo National Monument, Scripps Park above La Jolla Cove, and Torrey Pines State Reserve. Gray whales dive for three to six minutes at a time before coming to the surface to breathe. They’ll blow three to five times before diving back down – when out watching, scan the water for spouts to find whales before pulling out the binoculars for a better view. For a closer vantage point, there are quite a few options to get out on the water. Many whale watching cruises offer on-board guides who can tell you everything you want to know about the guests of honor, plus guaranteed sightings or you get a second trip free. If you’re looking for an even closer encounter, try a tour that takes you out on a smaller, faster vessel – or even a kayak tour that lets you paddle within 50 feet of the giant mammals.

5Habits Heart-Healthy
by MELISSA WOLINSKI, D.O.; Scripps Clinic, Torrey Pines
February is American Heart Month, so give yourself some love and assess if your lifestyle is heart-healthy. Prevention is key to keeping your heart pumping optimally, and these good habits can help keep your heart strong. 1. Exercise regularly. Your heart is a muscle that needs to be worked as consistently as any other muscle to stay strong. Doing aerobic exercise on most days of the week for 30 to 60 minutes helps your heart work efficiently. 2. Eat a balanced diet. According to the U.S. government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans, eating right for your heart means including fruits and veggies, low-fat dairy, poultry, fish, and nuts in your diet. Avoid red meat, processed foods, and foods high in sodium.

3. Manage your blood pressure. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a major risk factor for heart disease. Keeping your blood pressure within your healthy range reduces strain on your heart and arteries to keep you healthy. Incorporating the first two healthy habits into your routine, consistent exercise and eating well, will help keep your blood pressure in check. Managing your stress, limiting alcohol, and avoiding tobacco smoke are also important.
Be among the first to visit the new Prebys Cardiovascular Institute – San Diego’s largest and most comprehensive hospital dedicated to heart care. In honor of its grand opening, Scripps is hosting a community celebration on March 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Join us for tours, refreshments, family activities, and a heart health fair.
4. Lose weight if needed. Don’t let the holiday pounds linger. Too much weight puts you at a higher risk for many health problems, including heart disease.
The 383,000-square-foot, seven-story building is on the campus of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and will feature private rooms, intensive care beds, operating rooms, and cardiac catheterization labs.
5. Get enough sleep. Your heart is significantly impacted when your body doesn’t get enough sleep – just as your body needs rest, so does your heart. Lack of a good night’s sleep means your heart rate and blood pressure stay elevated instead of fluctuating normally. While the right amount of sleep varies from person to person, most people need six to eight hours of sleep each day.
Every year, more than 76,000 patients receive their heart care from Scripps. And Scripps is the only cardiovascular program in the region ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 20 in the country. Visit www.scripps.org or call 1-800-SCRIPPS (727-4777) for more information.
Melissa Wolinski, D.O., is an internal medicine doctor at Scripps Clinic in Torrey Pines. She provides care in all areas of internal medicine, including women’s medicine.

Managing Your Taxes in 2015 by Richard H. Fogg, CFP® President & CEO
T
here’s one thing you can count on as we kick off a new year – changes to the tax code. While there are few major new laws affecting taxpayers in 2015, it is important to understand how any adjustments to tax rules or your income might affect your tax liability. It is a critical aspect of your overall financial plan and can help you avoid any surprises when you file your tax return this year. Be aware that new laws can be implemented during the year. Congress has the ability to adjust tax laws and even do so retroactively. The tax code in place at the start of 2015 could be altered before year’s end, with those changes being made effective for the whole year. Here are some important tax considerations for the New Year:
GET HEALTH INSURANCE OR PAY The individual mandate under the Affordable Care Act that took effect Jan. 1, 2014 requires most individuals to obtain a qualifying level of health insurance or be subject to a fee. In 2015 the fee has increased to the higher of: • 2% of your yearly household income (capped at a certain level) or • $325 per person ($162.50 for a child under 18), with a family maximum of $975
If your employer provides health coverage, you do not have to purchase additional insurance on your own. Those who don’t have employer coverage can review options available from the health insurance exchanges. Visit www.healthcare.gov for more information.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TAX SAVINGS BY DEFERRING INCOME If you typically “max out” your workplace retirement plan contributions, you are able to adjust those deferral amounts to a higher level in 2015. The elective deferral limit for employees has risen to $18,000, $500 more than in 2014. Those 50 and older can make an additional $6,000 in contributions ($500 more than 2014) to their 401(k), 403(b) or federal government Thrift Savings Plan. Remember that for every dollar of income you defer into your retirement plan on a pre-tax basis, you reduce your current tax liability.
PAY ATTENTION TO A NEW LIMIT ON IRA ROLLOVERS IRA contribution limits remain the same for 2015, but there is an important rule change for IRAs. Now, tax laws allow only one rollover from an IRA to a different IRA in a 12-month period. The “one rollover per year”
limit applies in circumstances where you withdraw money from an IRA, but then roll it to another IRA within 60 days to avoid any current tax or penalty consequences. Direct transfers from an IRA with one trustee to an IRA with another can happen as often as you wish. Unless it is absolutely necessary, you want to avoid taking IRA distributions prior to age 59 ½ to eliminate the risk of incurring a penalty. It’s best to talk with a tax professional before doing an indirect rollover to make sure you understand all the rules.
ACCOUNT FOR INFLATION IN TAX RATES AND YOUR INCOME Tax brackets are adjusted yearly for inflation. In 2015 the income thresholds for each bracket were raised by about 1.5%. The standard deduction amount (used if you don’t itemize deductions) and the personal exemption amount are also adjusted for inflation. It is important to be aware of how all of these factors might affect your tax liability. On the other side of the coin, if you receive a salary increase and/or bonus in 2015, it could impact your tax bill. Work with your tax advisor to help determine if the amount of tax withheld from each paycheck is sufficient to avoid an under-withholding penalty.

he days are getting longer and spring sports are rising on the horizon at Torrey Pines High School (TPHS). The teams are primed to repeat what we have become accustomed to here at the home of the Falcons. Tennis, golf, lacrosse, and volleyball all return strong teams from last year’s successful campaign. Baseball is looking to hit the mark
as a veteran class takes the diamond in what promises to be an exciting year. Girls gymnastics looks to advance the program’s preparation of skills to achieve a stronger and more committed season this year. Girls softball looks to rebuild this year as only four starting players will return this season. As for track and field, this year the boys are rebuilding while the girls have a strong
all-around program. We will be very competitive in the Palomar League and hope to qualify several athletes for CIF. We invite you to come and see the best of what high school sports has to offer at TPHS. ~ Matthew Livingston and Charlenne Falcis Stevens, Athletic Directors

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Right Now is the Best Time for First-time Buyers to Purchase a Home!
B
eautiful, sunny San Diego County is one of the most soughtafter markets to find a home. With its moderate climate year-round, idyllic location, and close proximity to the beach and mountains, it’s no wonder so many families are looking to move here. Although it is ranked as one of the most expensive markets to purchase a home, the San Diego housing market is making a push forward and seeing some positive signs for 2015. San Diego has seen an upswing of economic growth in the past few years. The city is making some progress coming out of the Great Recession, which is great for those looking to buy a home in the area. As more jobs are becoming available and people are beginning to see those higher wages, many homes are being purchased before they are even built. While the market is hot, buyers are jumping on the chance to own their first home or downsize. Home values have seen a 4% increase, which is a good thing for the San Diego housing market. The median home price is San Diego is about $518,800 with a mortgage rate of 4.8%. Mortgage rates remain low in the San Diego housing market, but credit still remains tight. The median household income is going to be the driving force for the housing industry.
Local employment growth is the main driver in the San Diego housing market. As of now, the job growth is looking healthy moving in 2015. This past year, San Diego County added 30,000 jobs and now boasts an unemployment rate of 5.8%. Stability is key. Right now is the best time to purchase a home for those first-time buyers as interest rates are going to creep up more slightly this year again. This is still a good thing as it will bring balance to the San Diego housing market and keep the home price appreciation down. Don’t hesitate to get a new home or move up to the home of your dreams. The San Diego housing market is in a great place starting out 2015. Investing in a home in San Diego County at this time is definitely a beneficial thing for any family. Tips for
Greening Your Spring
Cleaning by TORI MORRISON
Y
ou stepped into 2015 with a few resolutions – most likely including the promise to clean your house for spring. Start off fresh this year by making a conscious decision to invest yourself into green spring cleaning. It’s much more environmentally friendly and safer for you and your loved ones. Here’s a list of eight ways you can reduce waste, use fewer toxic chemicals, and create a healthier living environment all year long. So put on those microfiber gloves and let’s get that house squeaky clean and green!
1. Organize, Reduce, and Recycle The best way to start your spring cleaning is by organizing and getting rid of the excess clutter in the house. Be sure to donate or recycle used clothing, books, toys, kitchen supplies, and more to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Recycle anything you cannot donate, making sure that the items are recyclable first. 2. Clean Naturally Swap out cleaning products that contain chemicals with a natural alternative. Vinegar can be used to disinfect, eliminate odors, and even get rid of stains. Baking soda can be combined with water and used to clean surfaces, and lemon juice can be mixed with salt to form a paste that will clean brass, copper, or stainless-steel surfaces or fixtures. 3. Reduce Waste Instead of wasting an entire roll of paper towels wiping down rooms, aim for a no-waste clean by using microfiber cloths, sponges, or reusable mops. 4. Hot Water Away You’d be amazed at how much cleaning you can do with just water.
72 • 92130Magazine.com • February | March 2015
Boiling water can be used to clean the tub, keep drains clear, and even get rid of stains. 5. Save Energy Get rid of the clutter on the top of your refrigerator. Appliances, cereal boxes, and kitchen utensils actually prevent heat from venting properly, and this causes the appliance to waste more energy. 6. Use Natural Air Fresheners Avoid synthetic air fresheners. Investing in house plants is a great way to improve the quality of air inside a home. Seek out natural air fresheners with lilacs or lemons. 7. Hang Up Your Clothes Instead of tossing your damp clothes into the dryer, hang them outside on the line. Line-drying uses no energy (except for a little work on your part) and leaves clothes smelling fresh. 8. Welcome Fresh Air Cycle out stale air by opening your windows and letting the fresh air indoors. There’s nothing like some fresh air during springtime.
