About...

“When I was young I would play with Barbies for hours. I used to enjoy creating the perfect settings for imaginary interactions. Years later after the birth of my beautiful daughter, Estella, I began creating elaborate themed birthday parties and thought about the idea of creating a “dollhouse”...I realized that true passions never fade, they just get bigger. I hired the best contractors to transform a warehouse into a 16 mini-room dollhouse. Each room is the perfect setting for endless photo shoots and events!”

Vol. 3, No. 3 TM

Publisher Derrick Breaux Creative Director Tyler McElhaney

About Last Night

T

Derrick Breaux Publisher

here’s nothing quite like a good party. It is often the end result of a lot of work and preparation. The reward. A gathering of friends, business associates, family, coworkers – many people coming together that share something in common. As I write this issue’s note, I find myself with a little extra hop in my step and a smile on my face. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that today is a Friday – and the end of a long and productive week. But what’s really on my mind is last night’s ZCode Magazines’ epic party! With the launch of our eleventh publication, 08/10 Magazine, covering the North Carlsbad zip codes of 92008 and 92010, we decided to make the official announcement with a grand celebration – ZCode style. And we felt that the iconic Carlsbad Flower Fields was the perfect venue – the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn made for a very cool setting. So why was last night’s party so great? Was it the fact that we were blessed to have over 300 guests ranging from local business owners, politicians, and school officials to friends and family members of the ZCode team? You bet it was! Last night was not only a night to celebrate the launch of 08/10 Magazine, but it was a celebration of community in general. You see, it is my belief that most of the people that live in North San Diego County live here by choice and not necessity. The vast majority of our neighbors are proud to live in their community. In fact, they love living in their community. It is this bond that makes everything work. It is this bond that makes each of the unique communities of North County so special. I am surrounded by an incredible group of people that make up the ZCode Team. Day in and day out they are in the office busting their butts and working hard to create magazines that we hope people want to read. Everyone has a unique part of the puzzle. It was an amazing experience to see our team mingling and socializing with many of the people that have either been featured in one of the ZCode Magazines or people that are loyal readers of the magazines. Having the ability for the team to connect faces with names, laugh and socialize make it all worth it. There are many moving parts to publishing hyper-local community magazines. First and foremost, it takes the vision, determination, and desire to produce a great product. For that, I would like to give a heartfelt “thank you” to the ZCode crew. Of equal importance is the loyalty of the local residents and advertisers – both of which ZCode Magazines would not exist without. We all need to thank them. So last night we celebrated. We celebrated you. We celebrated community. We celebrated family, friends, and coworkers. We celebrated being the best that we all can be. We celebrated an incredible journey that I like to call PASSION. I want to thank you for being a loyal reader. And thanks for supporting ZCode Magazines and supporting the advertisers that are responsible for delivering this magazine to your mailboxes.

MEET THE ONOZUKAS The Onozukas Bring Their Japanese Culture to Life in 92130 by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

W

hen Gene and Michiho Onozuka relocated from Japan to the United States in 2001, they settled comfortably into their Carmel Valley community. “We liked the area from the beginning – close to the ocean, yet easy access to inland and mountains, close to work, great school zone, and a friendly neighborhood,” said Michiho. Following a brief move back to Japan, the Onozuka’s decided to return, yet again, to Carmel Valley in 2010. Today the Onozukas live in the Trilogy development of 92130, truly making their community a part of their lives, while keeping their Japanese heritage a part of their hearts. The Onozukas' story began back when Gene and Michiho met in Japan while working at the same company. After moving to the United States, the couple had their first and only child, Andrew (11), in 2003. “Andrew told us about his memory before he was born. He also told mom that he was destined to help her. He is very savvy spiritually,” shared Michiho. Andrew is currently a 5th grader at Ocean Air Elementary and, once a week, attends a Japanese supplemental school, called “Minato School.” “[Andrew] loves playing soccer,” shared Michiho. “He has also been swimming since he was a baby, and has been practicing abacus for seven years too.” Andrew is also very artistic. In 2011 he received Parents: Children: Community: Parents’ Hometowns: Parents’ Occupations: Favorite Places to Visit in 92130:

Apart from school and extra-curricular activities, Andrew enjoys volunteering. Three years ago, he was involved with the “Stand for Japan” charity event benefitting the victims of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami disaster in northern Japan. He also participated in Ocean Air’s “International Night” event, teaching Origami at the Japan booth. But Andrew isn’t the only volunteer in the Onozuka family. Michiho has volunteered in the classroom at Ocean Air for the past four years, and is head librarian at the Japanese Minato School. Like her son, Michiho too had volunteered for the “Stand for Japan” charity event in 2011. “WE CELEBRATE AND In her professional life, Michiho is the director ENJOY JAPANESE for Angel Kids Garden and TRADITION AND teaches Japanese to young EVENTS IN ADDITION children. Gene – who majored TO THOSE OF THE U.S.” in mechanical engineering at Keio University of Japan – currently works as a senior sales director for Qualcomm in the semiconductor division. Although the Onozukas are deeply rooted in their American community, the Onozukas are proud to be a family of two distinct cultures. “We celebrate and enjoy Japanese tradition and events in addition to those of the U.S.,” explained Michiho. “These activities help Andrew maintain his bicultural and bilingual senses.” ¢

Carlsbad’s family of publications, including 92009 and 92011 Magazines, is now complete with the introduction of 08/10 Magazine. This past April, ZCode Media held a launch party for the new magazine at the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn amidst the picturesque Carlsbad Flower Fields. With the flowers in full bloom and the guests in full smiles, it was a night to remember. The packed house enjoyed delicious food, scrumptious desserts, and hot-ticket raffle items with over $14,000 in prizes. All $1,060 raised from the raffle went to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The night concluded with a few words from our co-owners, ZCode Media Publisher Derrick Breaux and Creative Director Tyler McElhaney, who premiered a riveting video on our newest addition to the ZCode bunch. Join us in welcoming our newest magazine to the family, 08/10 Magazine. ¢

CCA’s Community Garden

A LOOK INTO THE HISTORY AND CLASSES HELD AT CCA’S GARDEN photo provided by JEANNIE CHUFO

The

community garden at Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) is in bloom again with plants such as heirloom tomatoes, basil, oregano, broccoli, and raspberry bushes sprouting from the vegetable boxes constructed with love by the volunteers and CCA students that work to keep the garden alive and beautiful. What started as an Eagle Scout Project quickly became a passion for CCA’s Nest Business class and Jeannie Chufo, a CCA teacher. Together they worked to add life to the garden. Trey Hahn, the garden manager of the class began to use the garden as a way to relieve stress after class. “After starting to plant and set up irrigation, he had five more devoted students working with him in the garden nearly every day,” explained Jeannie. Every Friday the team would chop up vegetables from the garden and make a salad from their harvest to celebrate their hard work. This year the garden has hosted classes relating to gardening, organic eating, and cooking. Jeff Bishop and Jamie Accetta from Sustainable Solutions lead a class in the past, informing students how to make a “lasagna garden” which is made by layering organic material such as grass clippings and food on top of existing soil. Alison Caldwell taught a class called Organic 101 which focused on the benefits of an organic diet. The final class will be held this summer on June 4 and will be led by Red Oven Pizza Owner and Chef Justin Burlingame. Justin will lead a class on making pizza from scratch.

22 • 92130Magazine.com • June | July 2014

Jeannie hopes the garden will continue to grow. She plans on implementing a designated class for the garden “so that students throughout the year can reconnect with their food,” she expressed. Students and volunteers looking to assist with the garden can help with water management or gardening. “If any community members have expertise about water management skills and are willing to donate their time and knowledge we would welcome it,” said Jeannie. ¢

F

or 12-year-old Paige Linden, soccer is a big part of life. “Soccer is my main hobby. My uncle plays and introduced me to it,” explained Paige. Paige is on the team for the local soccer club and has been acknowledged for her abilities on the field, including being chosen for the Cal South Pro+ State ID Player Pool in both 2013 and 2014. Not surprisingly, Paige aspires to someday play on the Women’s National Team and in the Olympics. While it’s true that much of Paige’s energy is expended on improving her soccer skills, her efforts off the soccer field are equally impressive. Paige has received numerous honors including the Solana Highlands Certificate of Recognition for Six Pillars of Character in 2010, and the Solana Highlands Student Inspiration Award and School Learning Together Program Tutor in 2012.

Perhaps her proudest accomplishment has been the work she has done for the Friends of Scott Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children and families affected by childhood cancer. This year, Paige helped raise funds benefiting the Foundation’s annual Unforgettable Prom event. “With the help of my friends, family, Surf Soccer Club and the San Diego Flash I raised $730,” she stated. “My mom and I created a fundraising program we

Paige, being a defender, never did score that goal, but the donor gifted the money anyway and her program turned out to be a huge success. Sure, Paige is an inspiration to many, but she admits that she is equally encouraged by her peers. “The kids I saw at the Unforgettable Prom inspire me because they battle cancer everyday with strength and courage,” shared Paige, “and no matter how hard it is they keep at it.” ¢

RSD SWIMMERS RAISE FUNDS ONE LAP AT A TIME

The

sound of laughter, splashing, and the concentrated breathing of swimmers resounded off the Pardee Aquatics Center pool walls at the recent Rancho San Dieguito’s (RSD) annual lap-athon, Bring-it-on-Athon, to benefit the RSD Swim team and the Boys & Girls Club of San Dieguito’s aquatic programs. RSD swimmers swam for one hour straight to raise funds for training equipment, travel and meet expenses, their coaches’ continued education, and scholarships for swimmers. The swimmers embraced the challenge with over 200 participating in the event.

Swimmer Eric Li took home first place prize for most laps swum, swimming 5,650 yards – just shy of the record 5,950 yards held by RSD swimmer, Mickey Mackle. Even the younger swimmers powered through. “It was an inspiration to watch all of the kids push through and accomplish their set goals. We even had some Grunions swimmers, who are asked to swim for thirty minutes, elect to swim a straight hour instead. A major accomplishment for our young swimmers,” said Annie Ragovin, the director of development at the Boys & Girls Club of San Dieguito.

CALLING ALL KIDS! Carmel Valley Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics Offers Kid-Friendly Dental Care to the Local Community by JENNIFER FRAKES

C

armel Valley Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics is a child-focused practice, with a warm, friendly and professional atmosphere. “Dr. Grant and I opened the office in 2006 when we recognized the community needed a more comprehensive approach to children’s dental care,” said Dr. Pham. The two also welcomed Dr. Fard and Dr. Lugtu to the team in 2013. The office offers board certified specialists in both pediatric dentistry and orthodontics, a distinction that requires two to three years additional training after dental school. According to Dr. Pham, having two specialties at the same location offers parents more convenience and flexibility when scheduling their appointments. “We can also provide a higher level of comprehensive

dental care, coordinating dental health needs with the growth of the jaws and bones,” explained Dr. Pham. The office embraces technology because it makes the patient experience more comfortable and less evasive. They use child-size x-rays and child-friendly instruments and equipment, as well as provide headsets at each dental chair and flatmounted TVs for children to enjoy during their visit. Carmel Valley Pediatric Dentistry is dedicated to educating their patients and their parents in preventative oral health care and to educating themselves on the latest technologies and equipment. “We only want what is best for our patients, and we really believe it shows. We work hard to ensure the comfort of our patients and strive to create a friendly environment that will have children wanting to come back,” related Dr. Pham. ¢ SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

F

rom Daisies to Ambassadors, the Girl Scouts of Carmel Valley have a solid and growing group of young women bettering themselves, learning important life lessons, and helping make the 92130 community a better place to live for all of us. And it’s not just through their notoriously delicious cookies. With over seventy troops and nearly 800 girl scouts just in Carmel Valley, we can rest assured that the future is bright for the young women of 92130. Read along as we talk with Cathy Young, Carmel Valley Service Unit Manager for our local Girl Scouts.

Q&A with Cathy Young,

Carmel Valley Service Unit Manager

“GIRL SCOUTS IS SUCH AN ICONIC ORGANIZATION THAT IT’S EASY TO OVERLOOK HOW DARING AN IDEA IT WAS FOR FOUNDER JULIETTE GORDON LOW TO GATHER THOSE FIRST EIGHTEEN GIRLS IN THAT TROOP IN SAVANNAH, GA. IT WAS 1912, AFTER ALL, AND WOMEN WOULDN’T EARN THE RIGHT TO VOTE FOR ANOTHER EIGHT YEARS.” ~ANNA MARIA CHAVEZ, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, GIRLS SCOUTS OF THE USA

WHAT IS THE OVERALL MISSION OF GIRL SCOUTS?

WHAT WAS YOUR MOTIVATION TO GET INVOLVED?

Our mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts is the world’s premier leadership development organization for girls. We envision a future where more girls and women are leaders. Our innovative programs in health, the arts, technology, financial literacy, the environment and public service are making that vision a reality.

When I was a Girl Scout and wanted to become a Cadette, there was no troop for me at my school. I wanted to make sure all girls who wanted to continue to be Girl Scouts had the opportunity. It takes more than just troop leaders to keep the programs going. I believed I could use my business and organizational expertise to help support the Carmel Valley Service Unit and its troop leaders.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND THE GIRL SCOUTS OF CARMEL VALLEY? There have been Girl Scouts in San Diego since 1917. As new communities emerge, Girl Scouting is never far behind! Carmel Valley Service Unit is a high-performing group of girls and volunteers, who have worked hard to earn the President’s Award — a recognition from Girl Scouts San Diego for outstanding achievement — several times, most recently in 2013.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? HOW LONG HAVE YOU SERVED IN THIS ROLE? I am the service unit manager, and have held this position for two years.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING INVOLVED IN GIRL SCOUTS? Seeing the girls grow and become the leaders of our next generation.

IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE WISH GRANTED FOR THE PROGRAM, WHAT WOULD IT BE? That more and more girls of all economic, ethnic and religious backgrounds will have the opportunity to participate in Girl Scouts.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE PROGRAM IN FIVE YEARS? We have a strong service unit with many girls who continue into high school. I see the service unit continuing to thrive and serve all the girls of Carmel Valley. Middle and high school Girl Scouts actively

host and plan activities for younger girls; we would love to build more community collaborators in the area so we can offer more program opportunities for our members, especially older girls.

DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING PLANS FOR THE GIRL SCOUTS OF CARMEL VALLEY? We are wrapping up for this school year and starting to plan for next year. Our Service Unit Encampment will kick off the year on Saturday from Monday, Sept. 20 to 22. It is one of my favorite events, as it brings all Girl Scouts from Carmel Valley together. It is great for the young girls to see older girls who are still in Girl Scouting, and the older girls love to work with and lead the younger ones.

WHY SHOULD PARENTS GET THEIR CHILDREN INVOLVED IN GIRL SCOUTS? As girls learn to identify local and global needs and take action to advocate for themselves and others, they build a strong sense of self. They gain problem solving and conflict resolution abilities, among other life skills, and develop positive values. Plus, they’ll get to have all kinds of adventures based on their interests and goals.

DOES CARMEL VALLEY HAVE A LARGE GIRL SCOUT PRESENCE? Currently, there are 796 Girl Scouts in Carmel Valley. We are one of the largest service units in the region.

ARE THERE ANY LARGE EVENTS THAT ARE COMING UP FOR GIRL SCOUTS IN 92130?

HOW DOES ONE GO ABOUT JOINING A TROOP? ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS ON WHEN GIRLS CAN JOIN? Girls ages 5 to 17 can join Girl Scouts all year long! While troops are the most popular way to participate, we have a variety of pathways to membership. Girls can attend our summer camps, engage in a series, travel the world with other young women, work independently on badges or service projects, or attend events and activities hosted by our council and service unit. As a volunteer-driven organization, Girl Scouts thrives when adults give their time to lead troops and share their

We had our volunteer awards and appreciation dinner in early June at Oggi’s to thank all of the adult volunteers in our service unit. We handed out awards to those adults who go above and beyond the call of duty, and installed our new service unit officers for next year.

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE LOCAL TROOPS THAT CATER TO 92130. We have over seventy troops in Carmel Valley, ranging in age from Daisies in kindergarten to Ambassadors who are high school seniors. Local troops are especially active and participate in community service projects, earn higher awards, and travel through the Girl Scouts destinations program.

HOW DO THE GIRL SCOUTS FUNDRAISE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?

PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF GIRL SCOUTS. At every age, girls discover themselves, connect with others and take action to make the world a better place. Daisies (grades K to 1), Brownies (grades 2 to 3) and Juniors (grades 4 to 5) learn what it means to be a Girl Scout and explore the world around them. As Cadettes (grades 6 to 8), Seniors (grades 9 to 10) and Ambassadors (grades 11 to 12), they continue to tackle issues they care about and blossom into community leaders.

To earn money for troop activities and community service projects, girls can sell nuts and candies during the Fall Product Sale and participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program. A percentage of proceeds from product sales goes to Girl Scouts San Diego to support events, programs, volunteer training, camps and facilities, as well as financial assistance to help keep Girl Scouting available and affordable for all. In addition, Girl Scouts San Diego and Carmel Valley Service Unit hold occasional fundraising events. More opportunities are available at www.sdgirlscouts.org/giving.

SARIANN MONACO PROVES SHE CAN DO ANY JOB SHE DREAMS by LINDA FRABL | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

D

el Mar Heights resident Sariann Monaco fearlessly dives headfirst into whatever dream job may beckon to her. In a quick nutshell, she is an actress, voiceover artist, writer, casting director, producer . . . and even an ordained minister! As for Sariann’s past professions, she’s been a surgical assistant, a medical supply sales rep, an HR assistant, a day care assistant, a newspaper columnist, a jewelry saleswoman, a hotel front desk employee, a wedding photographer, a pet care company owner, and even a public speaker on genealogy/adoption topics. Sariann exclaimed, “I want to try everything! I am most proud of stepping outside of my comfort zone to try acting in my 40s. I wanted to be an example to my kids that we can do anything. No excuses! Don’t take no for an answer!” Born in Chicago, Sariann moved at age 7 to Florida, where she stayed for the next three decades. On a whim, Sariann and her husband bought a house in Charlotte, NC where they remained for six years until moving back to her hometown of Chicago. Sariann recalled, “The winters were too cold and we wanted a warm life near the sea that we hadn’t been to yet: California!” Her life as a voiceover/actress began when Sariann did the IVR (interactive voice response) phone message systems for some of her employers. Then a life coach friend asked her what she’d do if she could do anything, and Sariann responded, “Be an actress.” That prompted her to find background work in the North Carolina film industry. Then, in Chicago, she co-hosted a medical web site, appeared on the local shows Mob Doctor and Boss, and studied with the Second City Improv. Current projects for Sariann include voicing an upcoming animation film, as well as voicing ads for both Nature Made Vitamin and Chicco baby bottles. She’s also the casting director for the film, The Latin Rose, and she’s the co-producer and narrator for the documentary film ONE, about global humanity. Plus, she’s appeared in infomercials, student and independent films, an autistic awareness video, and monthly “patient-acting” gigs for UCSD medical school student training sessions. Sariann concluded, “I think we truly become what we believe and anyone with a dream should be prepared to make a lot of mistakes, but still forge ahead. We get only one life and we have nothing to lose!” ¢ Name: Profession: Community: Hobbies/Interests: Favorite Local Spots:

Award-Winning High School Scientist ERIC CHEN’S SCENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS WIN NATIONAL RESPECT

S

cientists can attest to the fact that scientific research requires curiosity, methodology and heart, traits Canyon Crest Academy senior, Eric Chen values. “For me, science is a way to satisfy my curiosity. It provides logical, concrete explanations for what I’m wondering and is a chance to answer questions that have never been answered before,” he stated. It’s also a way to improve the world around him. “I also love science for its impact. One discovery can change the lives of millions,” he marveled. Eric Chen has become a national sensation, winning a rare trifecta of awards for his recent preventive developments with the influenza virus. These achievements included the Google Science Fair Grand Prize, First Place Prize for the Individual for the Siemens Competition, and, most recently, First Place Winner of the Intel Talent Science Search. Eric cites the sudden havoc that surrounded many flu viruses in the past as why he began his work with the virus. “Since the 2009 swine flu, I’ve seen new influenza strains like H5N1 and H7N9 all over the news, and have watched as the situation got worse. The urgency of the current situations is what pushed me to work on the flu.” Eric will put the $100,000 scholarship he won at the Intel Talent Science Search towards his college education. He will be attending Harvard University in the fall where he is planning on majoring in math or computer science. He hopes to become a college

professor or an entrepreneur so that he will be able to bring scientific innovation to life and see first-hand how his work will heal patients. As for a few words of advice, Eric mentioned never to feel daunted by scientists and to be persistent with your research. “Coming into science I had no idea if I would discover anything, and it has been taking initiative and persisting that has gotten me to where I am,” he said. ¢

Over 350 volunteers help to keep our communities safe as members of the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol or RSVP. 92130 volunteer Bobby Siegel has been serving the Carmel Country Highlands RSVP since January 2011. Bobby’s 2,000+ hours of patrol include a variety of duties, from assisting patrol officers and patrolling neighborhoods to watching over vacation homes and performing You Are Not Alone checks on the elderly. “Police officers constantly thank me and my fellow volunteers for the services we provide. Bobby, a resident of Carmel Valley Highlands, first learned of the volunteer program through a friend who thought he might be a good fit. “I have a vested interest in the Carmel Valley area, I am very observant and committed to the safety and well-being of the various neighborhoods in the northwest district of SDPD,” Bobby offered. Even though experience is not required to volunteer, Bobby’s prior experience as a police officer in Atlanta has served useful. When not in uniform, Bobby is an avid road biker, cycling around North County and Orange County, a hobby he has had for thirty years. “When I saw dedicated bike lanes in San Diego,

I knew I needed to live here,” he admitted. Bobby and his wife, Leslie, also appreciated the excellent school district when they moved to Carmel Valley sixteen years ago. Today, their two sons, Jeffrey and Alex, are both in college. Jeffrey is a senior at Georgia Tech, and Alex attends Chapman University, where he plays lacrosse for their nationally ranked team. Bobby stays busy on patrols and wishes more retired people would take the time to volunteer. “We need and encourage retired men and women over 50 who are willing to patrol and do other collateral duties,” Bobby said. A ride-along can be scheduled for anyone interested. For Bobby, “the most rewarding part is that it gives me an avenue to be of service to my community and the SDPD,” he explained. ¢

STRAWBERRY SERENADE Sweet Fun in the Sun by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Tyler McElhaney

S

trawberry season is here! This beloved red fruit is a favorite among San Diegans, served on plates and in recipes new and old. But for every recipe, you’ll want fresh strawberries to serve, and it doesn’t get much “fresher” than handpicked strawberries straight from the field. This season, grab your friends and family and head to one of San Diego’s strawberry farms, where you can pick as many berries as your strawberry heart desires. Driving north on the I-5, it’s hard to miss the vast strawberry field nestled in the hills of Carlsbad off Cannon Rd. This is home to The Carlsbad Strawberry Company, who invite groups as small as a couple to as large as school groups and organizations to come pick strawberries for themselves. Venture into the field with your friends and family for a lovely summer getaway. With groups of fifteen or more, they recommend you call ahead at 760-603-9608 for more information. The fields are open Monday through Friday, and picking is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit their website for farm stand locations and directions at www.carlsbadstrawberrycompany.com. Out east in Temecula is Kenny’s Strawberry Farm, where their strawberries are grown hydroponically. There’s no need to worry about dirt or mud, as the strawberries are elevated above the ground to where even small children can reach. The farm is open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and you can visit their website to keep up-to-date with crop conditions at www.temeculavalleystrawberryfarms.com. ¢

Local Dental Practice Saves the Day THE SUPER DENTISTS DONATE PITCHING MACHINES TO DMNLL

The

Super Dentists, a local dental practice in Carmel Valley, stepped up to the plate to assist the Del Mar National Little League (DMNLL) when two Jugs pitching machines were stolen from their field’s shed. The Super Dentists made the decision to replace the pitching machines for the league after speaking with one of the board members’ wife, Katie Wilsey, and learned about the effects the missing equipment would have on the league. “While we were able to make temporary arrangements with Del Mar American League to borrow their pitching machines for this past week’s games, obviously this theft was going to put a major burden on the league by forcing us to purchase two extremely expensive pieces of equipment,” stated Jeffrey Bernstein, President of DMNLL. The equipment, which is valued at $1,000 per machine, was reportedly stolen from a shed at Sage Canyon School. Russ Scheier, current DMNLL board member discovered the theft when he went to the school to prepare for a machine pitch practice. The machines are mainly used for the league’s machine pitch division, and are also used during player evaluations. Thanks to The Super Dentists donation, the league will not have to purchase brand new equipment or cancel or postpone any future games. Jeffery expressed his gratitude about the situation. “The Super Dentists is a newcomer to Carmel Valley, but has already shown a willingness to really reach out and help our kids. We are truly grateful for the generous donation!”

ACT & SAT Preparation:

Scarlet Cerutti, School and Sport Manager for The Super Dentists explained that the local practice was more than happy to help. “We are so honored to be able to help out the great kids and families in DMNLL! Our hope is that the new pitching machines provide DMNLL with many years of fun! And play ball!” To express their appreciation to The Super Dentists, a representative from the Carmel Valley practice was invited to throw the first pitch at a DMNLL game. the students who work on the TPHS student newspaper, The Falconer, journalism is driven by passion. The Falconer not only provides these budding journalists with an avenue to practice and acquire new writing skills, it is an extension of them, “The Falconerds,” as editor-in-chief of The Falconer, Cory Lomberg joked. The students’ hard work recently paid off, as the newspaper was awarded the ‘Best of Show’ award in the Newspaper Broadcasting 17 Pages or More category at the 2014 National Scholastic Press Association and Journalism Education Association Spring National High School Journalism Convention at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Elated Cory explained how despite a previous pitfall at the last convention, the staff maintained loyal to their style and craft. She noted, “At the last convention we all thought the judges did not really like our style of writing and design, and we were okay with this. We still wanted to continue in the direction we were going and simply improve the things we had been doing.” The staff’s devotion to their vision clearly benefited them. Cory enthused, “Based on the fact that we won ‘Best in Show,’ I guess sticking with our original ideas and improving our personal style really impressed the judges!” On top of that, Cory expressed how hard the staff worked to create solid, well-researched articles. “. . . we really do put our hearts into releasing a reliable, respected paper every month,” she stated. The Falconer is released monthly, nine times a year and boasts six

sections: news, opinion, feature, focus, entertainment and sports, with a satirical backpage which focuses on popular trends, stories and other relevant issues. The last issue will be released this June, with a new editorial staff stepping up to the plate once the class of 2014 graduates. Cory expressed her hopes for the future Falconerds. “I’m hoping they continue to improve the paper, as well as our website, www.tphsfalconer.com,” she said. She added, “It really will be business as usual for the remaining Falconerds.” ¢

Teacher’s Advancements in Technology TEACHER AND DIRECTOR OF INNOVATION WINS TECHNOLOGY AWARD

T

echnology can play a powerful tool in the classroom, and as Matt Baier, the recent recipient of the Innovation in Technology Award, understands, “Technology enables students to learn important skills that they will need in college and beyond.” Matt was recently awarded with the Innovation in Technology Award for his work as director of the Center for Innovation at Cathedral Catholic High School (CCHS) at the 11 th Annual Innovation in Education Awards Dinner. Matt has been recognized for integrating technology into classroom learning and assisting other teachers with new technological developments in their classrooms. These developments included a student podcast project, iBooks where teachers are able to select their own material, Google Apps, and even an

interactive iPad course that help teachers learn how to implement the iPad in their classrooms. “One program that we are particularly proud of is our use of the iPad and iTunes U to ‘gamify’ our professional development. Our teachers have a series of challenges to complete that guide them in learning about our technology tools and how to use the iPad in the classroom. If they pass enough challenges they complete a new level,” explained Matt. With these technological advancements, Matt has already noticed more engagement with his students. He noted, “When technology is used effectively students will be empowered to take ownership of their own learning. Our goal should be to use technology to teach students to become intellectually curious and skilled lifelong learners.” He hopes to continue helping teachers create their own iBook textbooks in the future and further his work with an online school program that is compatible with the iPad, which he is currently working on. anyon Crest Academy (CCA) recently held its tenth year anniversary gala event, Across the Universe: A Beatles Tribute. The event began with a pre-party set in the streets of London with Beatles-themed refreshments, followed by a performance by the students from the Envision disciplines, a silent auction, a plaque unveiling ceremony and an afterparty held off-campus. This year’s gala was a bit unconventional in the sense that, unlike previous years, its focus and venue were much more personal. This year’s gala involved students and emphasized the school as the focal point of the evening.“We are breaking the mold of the traditional gala this year, and holding the event at the school. We are spending money at CCA for CCA and providing valuable educational and reallife experiences for our students throughout the process,” said Joanne Couvrette, Executive Director of the CCA Foundation. ¢

Synchronized Swimming Star ALEXANDRA SUAREZ SWIMS HER WAY TO SUCCESS photo by MINDY SUAREZ

S

ynchronized swimming requires an incredible amount of strength, flexibility, and control – a unique combination which avid synchronized swimmer and competitor Alexandra Suarez is quite familiar with. The Carmel Valley athlete just earned a place on the 2014 13 to 15 age group National Synchronized Swimming Squad. Alexandra was one of the talented twenty chosen athletes who proceeded to the May tryouts for a chance to be selected as one of the synchronized swimmers for the National Team which will represent the U.S. at the Comen Cup in Europe and at the UANA Championships in Riverside. Alexandra has been a member of the San Diego Sea Stars Synchronized Swimming Team for over four years and trains for about sixteen hours a week. Her passion for the sport

has impressed friend and family members alike and will continue to do so with her recent achievement. “You have to really love this sport to go through the strenuous training it requires,” mentioned Alexandra’s mother, Mindy Suarez. She continued, “Not only do you need the strength and flexibility of a gymnast and the endurance of a swimmer, you need to do all of this while holding your breath upside down in the water.” Alexandra hopes the future will bring the opportunity to represent the U.S. on the National Team and someday compete in the Olympics. She would also like to participate in synchronized swimming in college. To watch Alexandra in action, keep informed with Sea Stars’ events on Facebook. Are You Ready to Buy Your First Home? by Richard H. Fogg, CFP®

B

uying your first home is one of the biggest investment decisions you’ll ever make. So how do you know if it’s the right time to venture into home ownership? You can start by answering these seven questions.

1. HOW LONG WILL YOU BE IN THE AREA? Because of the transaction costs that come with buying and selling a home, it typically takes three to five years to break even. If you sell any sooner, you could end up losing money – even in a rising market. If you do make a profit, you’ll have to pay capital gains taxes if you’ve owned the house less than two years. Assess whether your circumstances will enable you to stay put long enough to make purchasing a home worthwhile.

2. HOW MUCH CAN YOU AFFORD TO PAY? As a rule of thumb, your mortgage payment shouldn’t be more than twenty-five percent of your gross income and your total monthly debt shouldn’t exceed thirty-three percent of your gross income. Keep in mind that your principal and interest aren’t the only costs associated with home ownership. You’ll also incur additional expenses, such as: • Utilities: water, gas, electric, sewer, garbage, and association fees (if applicable) • Homeowner’s insurance • Property taxes • Maintenance costs: interior and exterior repairs, and equipment • City assessments Because these charges can add hundreds of dollars to your monthly expenses, make sure to consider your total costs to avoid an uncomfortably tight financial situation or overextending yourself.

3. WHAT’S THE HOUSING MARKET LIKE IN YOUR AREA?

6. ARE YOUR FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS IN ORDER?

The real estate market differs by city, state and region. Compare the costs of renting and buying to determine which makes the most sense in your situation. Depending on where you live, one option may be more favorable than the other.

When you apply for a mortgage you’ll need to provide several documents such as:

4. CAN YOU COVER THE DOWN PAYMENT? Most traditional mortgage brokers require that you have at least a twenty percent down payment to avoid Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI). If you don’t have enough, PMI will typically cost between 0.5 to one percent of your entire loan amount every year. For example, if you purchase a $175,000 home at a one percent insurance rate, it adds just over $145 a month to your expenses. Keep this in mind when calculating what you can afford.

5. WHAT’S YOUR CREDIT SCORE? If you’re not sure, you can order a free credit report from a reputable credit agency such as Equifax, Experian or TransUnion once every twelve months. Your credit score is important because when a bank is deciding to loan you money, they want to know that they can trust you to pay them back. If your credit score is good, you can breathe easy. If it’s not, take action as quickly as possible to improve it. If there are any errors on your report, make sure to get them corrected so they don’t negatively impact your ability to qualify for a loan.

• W-2 or 1099 income statements from the past two years • Current year profit-and-loss statement (if you’re self-employed) • Federal tax returns for the past two years • Bank and investment account statements for up to the past three months • Recent pay stubs and proof of other income Since it can take time to pull all of this information together, start sooner rather than later. Also, always provide every page of a document, because lenders will want to see every page even if it’s blank.

7. DO YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY SAVINGS FUND? Most financial professionals recommend saving enough to cover three to six months of your living expenses in case an unexpected event such as a job loss, illness or injury prevents you from earning an income. An emergency fund can also help you cover unexpected expenses, such as a broken appliance or a plumbing emergency. For help assessing your financial situation to determine if purchasing a home is a good choice for you consult your financial advisor. Your advisor can help ensure that your decision is in line with your short and long-term goals and budget. ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Are Open Houses Effective?

Yes.

Open houses can be effective. Even as prospective buyers continue to turn to the internet to search for their dream home, most agents will argue that open houses are still the best way for house hunters to see and feel if a home is the right fit. Nothing beats actually walking through a house and seeing it firsthand. As an agent you have to get the word out about the open house beforehand. Mailings, flyers and Web-based advertising are great tools to inform the public about an upcoming open house. These days many serious buyers prefer the virtual open houses of www.realtor.com, www.trulia.com and/or www.zillow.com. The first and only lesson for home sellers is that the home has to be staged right. It must look appealing inside and out. Buyers want to see a home they can see themselves moving into right away. They do not want to view a fixer at an open house. Take into

consideration what the new home builders do and the efforts they go through to make the house a home! During an open house your home is on display for likely buyers. Make your home shine during the open house. In a hot seller’s market (like the one we’re in) there is no need, as the home will sell itself if priced and marketed correctly. In a buyer’s market a listing agent needs to use every tool possible to get the buyer to submit an offer on their listing and not the one next door. Call us today at 858-243-5278 to see how our effective marketing strategies will get your home sold immediately, or visit www.danconwaysold.com. ¢
