Vol. 4, No. 2 TM
It’s a Miracle!
F
Derrick Breaux Publisher
or the better part of last year, our two youngest kids (9 and 10 years old) have been asking for pet hamsters. My wife and I had several conversations about it and ultimately decided that we would succumb to the request. After all, isn’t owning and taking care of hamsters part of the magical childhood experience? Isn’t it supposed to teach responsibility – and all of that other stuff that kids need to learn the hard way? So, a couple of days before Christmas, my wife headed to the pet store and came home with, not one, but two male Roborovski hamsters (the smallest of the dwarf hamsters). I have to admit, the little guys are very cute. Needless to say, they were the hit of the gift exchange. Fast Forward 15 Days. My daughter had a friend over for a play date. All of a sudden, I heard high pitched shrieks and screams (which aren’t that uncommon during these play dates) coming from upstairs followed by the inevitable rumbling of footsteps running down the stairs. Both girls were screaming at the top of their lungs, “The boy hamster is having babies! How can a boy hamster have babies? Oh my goodness. What should we do? What should we do?” Chuckling and with a bit of a dismissive attitude, I let them know that this was literally impossible. However, upon further observation, I realized that the impossible had in fact happened. It was a miracle! The “boy” hamster was definitely giving birth – not to one baby, but to a litter of six little hamsters. The Breaux household went into immediate lockdown. Chaos had officially set in. Once word of the miracle hit the streets, parents and other friends were quickly en route to check out the new little guys. There were even talks of live hamster cams. Life as we know it would clearly not be the same. As family and friends gathered to see the modern day miracle, I immediately began consulting with Google (knower of all things) to try to figure out how this could have happened. Google responded by letting me know that the gestation period for ‘Robo’ hamsters is about 22 days. This meant that the “boy” hamster was pregnant when we purchased her. This information prompted additional questions. I put more intense pressure on Google to get to the bottom of the mystery. Is the other hamster also a female? If not, should we separate them? Google was a bit indecisive in this area, so we ultimately decided to move the hamster of unknown sex into its own cage the next day, especially once we realized that the mother had already exiled it into a distant corner of the cage. It seemed like the right thing to do. Fast Forward 21 Days. Since Google had instructed us not to mess with the baby hamsters, we merely observed for several weeks while contacting friends who might be interested in adopting some of the critters. The hamster cam idea had also been overridden because we couldn’t quite figure out how to make it work (code phrase for “I was lazy”). The baby hamsters were now weaned from the mother and running around. They were as cute as you can imagine. Control of the Breaux household had now been regained. Fast Forward One More Day. I received an unexpected text message from my wife, “Our boy hamster (I can’t repeat all of her words) just had SIX MORE BABIES!” I realized we had officially lost control once again – in fact, it seems we were never in control after all. Talks of hamster cams resumed. Visitors stopping by to see the new miracle babies stepped up to an all-time high. We did Facebook posts. We hit the phones. Desperate emails were sent out. We needed more people to adopt more hamsters! At the end of all of the excitement, there are two things that I am now certain of. For starters, the mother hamster is officially not a boy. Additionally, the other original hamster is definitely not a girl. Other than that, all I can do is enjoy the chaos and laugh.

eople from all around the world want to settle in San Diego and the Loew family is no exception. After spending some time living in Oslo, Norway, in 2001 they heeded the suggestions of many in working their way toward Carmel Valley. Meadows Del Mar called Adam and Terri’s names. “After almost a year of investigating,” Terri explained, “we purchased the lot, and quickly began the process of our plans and building our dream home.” Terri began her career at Thompson Hysell Engineers designing subdivisions. After five years she went on to operate her used car lot, Diablo Valley Auto Brokers, in Danville, CA. “I enjoyed the flexibility that allowed me to follow my true passion,” Terri shared, “riding and showing my Paint and Pinto-bred horses in the all-around events.” She was working in a sales position with UNUM Life Insurance in San

Francisco when Adam enrolled her in 24 Hour Nautilus (predecessor to 24 Hour Fitness). About a year later, they had their first date. Adam's career has morphed from a focus on the “physical” fitness of the community to a view to its “fiscal” fitness. His executive career at 24 Hour Fitness brought them here from Europe, where he held many positions over 15 years, gravitating from vice president of sales and marketing (Europe) to vice president of operations for the Southwest Division and finally vice president of new club openings (USA). He left 24 Hour Fitness in 2008 to educate himself on the many facets of real estate. He is currently co-chair of the Luxury Committee on the Associate Leadership Council at Keller Williams Carmel Valley/Del Mar, helping lead the office of over 340 KW associates. Twelve-year-old Taylor plays recreational soccer for the CVMS Sharks and enjoys showing her APHA/PtHA horse Lonsum Zipper. She has been riding and showing since she was three and this past summer showed at the Pinto World Championships in Tulsa, OK. She received one world championship, three reserve world championships, and four top fives. Ten-year-old Reagan is in fifth grade at Sage Canyon and also has an APHA/PtHA horse called Sunny’s Chocolate Zip. Reagan's true passion is softball, and she plays for the North Shore Girls Softball League. She made an All Star team her first year out and hopes to play for SDSU one day. Carmel Valley is the center of involvement for the family, where they enjoy sports, horses, volunteer work, and the outdoors. The Loews love calling Carmel Valley home, finding comfort in their neighborhood that allows them to pursue their varied interests and share them with the community. ¢

Matthias von Herrath, M.D. Wins National Ranking CARMEL VALLEY RESIDENT BALANCES TYPE 1 DIABETES RESEARCH AND FAMILY LIFE

alancing one’s work and family life is a difficult feat for anyone, which is why the recent nomination of family man Matthias von Herrath, M.D. as the top type 1 diabetes scientist by the San Francisco American Diabetes Association (ADA)is so impressive. “Being nominated was of course very special to me. It was by an independent ranking association and announced at the international diabetes meeting last year held by the ADA,” explained Matthias. While the award was flattering, Matthias uses it as an incentive to work even harder on diabetes prevention research. Type 1 diabetes is a disease in which the immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that make insulin and keep the

body’s blood sugar in check. Matthias was inspired to work toward helping improve human health after losing his father to a stroke when he was only eight years old. Since discovering that vaccines can be designed to redirect aggressive immune cells, Matthias has come quite a long way in accomplishing his dream. “This is really a dream of mine, but as you can imagine this involves lots of travel and I am very grateful to my family and especially Natalie for supporting me,” explained Matthias. Matthias shares his home in Carmel Valley with his wife Natalie, and his four children who range from four months to 18 years old. With the continued support of his family, Matthias will continue to work toward making a universal vaccine to prevent the disease.

Daniel has been living in Carmel Valley all of his life. “I love it here because there are so many different locations nearby for several different types of photography,” described Daniel, “but also the proximity to the beach.” This last point is an important one to Daniel, as he is inspired by the water. “Not only do I draw ideas for pictures at the beach, but a lot of my photography has something to do with water, the beach, the waves, or the areas surrounding the beach,” explained Daniel. Perhaps this love for water was influenced by one of
his most notable life experiences. “My most memorable experience is definitely going on a three-day trip to Mexico,” shared Daniel. “During these three days I stayed at my great uncles scenic house on a lake. What made it truly memorable was flying a small plane over the scenic lake with views of the surrounding mountains.” In an effort to garner exposure for his business Daniel uses social media to publish the majority of his work. “I received some recognition from a few other successful photographers who saw some of my work,” said Daniel, “and they took it upon themselves to help me improve my photography and offer guidance.” He admires photographers like Annie Leibovitz, who is well known for her portraits, and Clark Little, known for his pictures of Hawaiian waves. Daniel currently attends Canyon Crest Academy where he thoroughly enjoys his photography class. “To me school is very important not only because of the academics but because of the social aspect of making new friends and forming relationships that could last,” said Daniel. When asked about his future goals Daniel replied, “I would like to attend a UC school and make a successful career out of my photography in a few years. I would like to reside in Ocean Beach or Encinitas.” ¢
“I WAS INSPIRED TO CONTINUE AND PURSUE THIS AS A CAREER WHEN I SAW PEOPLE AROUND ME FINDING SUCCESS IN PHOTOGRAPHY.”

Young Skier Brings Pride to Carmel Valley KATRINA SCHABER REPRESENTS TEAM USA AT THE 2015 IPC ALPINE SKIING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
C
armel Valley skier Katrina Schaber has accomplished feats that some people may only dream of. Katrina has been skiing since the age of four on vacations with her family, but an obstacle was thrown her way in the third grade when she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. What would have kept many people off the slopes didn’t stop Katrina. She faced her situation head-on and continued to follow her interest in skiing. In 2009 she attended her first ski camp at the National Sport Center for the Disabled in 2009. In 2010 she visited Mammoth Mountain and became involved with their disabled program: Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra. She has garnered multiple medals in competitive skiing since the age of 15 and in the last month came out on top in the Super Combined at the 2015 US National Championships. This led to her being invited to participate in the 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships, the biannual event that is second in size only to the Paralympic Games.
Katrina commented, “I was super excited. I could not believe that I would represent the United States at such a prestigious event. It truly is an honor. My hard work is paying off.” Her short-term goals are to finish a successful
season at the upcoming World Championships and then the US Championships at the end of March. Her long-term ambition is to make the US adaptive ski team and compete in the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games.

he Robins family is truly inspirational. Their story began when their middle child, Sean, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 16. “He was outraged by the lack of new treatments and research advancements for his own cancer, Ewing Sarcoma,” recalled Amy, Sean’s mother. “He wanted to start a foundation that would find cures to pediatric cancers and help other kids and teens who were suffering from cancer.” When Sean lost his seven-year battle and passed away in November 2006 his father, Mitch, decided to carry on his son’s vision. And so in 2007 Mitch and Amy started The Seany Foundation. “Our first two goals/projects were funding novel cutting edge research at UC San Diego, where we set up a fund in Sean's memory,” explained Amy, “and the other was building a lounge for teens only on the new Rady Cancer wing called ‘The Seany Room.’” Today, The Seany Room is a place where teens being treated for cancer can meet to talk, play games, watch movies, or simply have a break from their patient room. “After the lounge was completed and paid for, we knew we wanted to do more quality of life projects because we learned that they could really make a difference in the lives of kids with cancer and their families,” said Amy. With its mission statement, “bringing hope and happiness to kids affected by cancer,” the foundation has funded small quality of life programs at Rady and has even extended its programs to Los Angeles. “We are thrilled to have found our home in making kids and teens happier and more able to cope while they are fighting or recovering from cancer,” Amy shared. Now, The Seany Foundation is taking on its biggest project yet: Seany’s Camp Reach for the Sky, a free summer camp for kids and teens affected by cancer. “The American Cancer Society ran these camps for over 30 years,” explained Amy. “When they decided to end these programs, we were inspired and excited to pick them up and continue to provide this vital program for as many campers as possible in our community and beyond.” Amy continued, “Teens are a very special demographic in the world of pediatric cancer and of course we are extra sensitive to this need, as our son Sean was 16 at diagnosis.” Aside from their commitment to the foundation, Mitch works as a CPA, and Amy as a dental hygienist. The couple relocated from Detroit to San Diego in 1991 with their three children, Alex, Sean, and Emily. “Alex, his wife Melanie, and their daughter Madeleine Sean reside in Berkeley. Emily and her new husband, Seth Brody, live here in San Diego, and of course, Sean resides in our memories and hearts always.” ¢

Name of Chef: Alison Skier Family: Husband – Don; Daughter – Laurel; Son – Jamie Community: The Breakers in Carmel Valley Hobbies/Interests: Reading, entertaining, cooking for friends, gardening, volunteering, art, road trips, museums, and scrapbooking Favorite Local Activity: Visiting our beautiful beaches for the ocean view, farmers’ market, having coffee with friends About the Recipe: This is by far the most requested recipe I make. It is everyone’s favorite! When Don and I were first together, our friend, Dr. Ernie Kim, would make this recipe for our gathering of friends – often by request. It is his mother’s recipe. Once we had children I started making it for playgroup BBQs, Girl Scout and Cub Scout parties, family pool parties, and children’s sleepover parties. As a Girl Scout leader in Carmel Valley, my “girls” would request this for almost every gathering at our house – which were frequent. My girls all graduated college this past year and stayed active in scouting through high school where they would grill 20 to 30 pounds of Korean Chicken at my house to take down to feed families at the Ronald McDonald House at Rady Children’s Hospital or to provide dinner at Teen Storefront, a shelter for homeless teens in downtown San Diego. When I make this dish for a potluck, I just bring copies of the recipe because I know I will be asked for it. One warning – most people eat more of this chicken than the recommended serving size. I always make more to accommodate for this. It makes great leftovers and freezes well for a quick weeknight meal. About the Chef: I have lived in Carmel Valley since 2001, actively volunteering at Sage Canyon School when my children were small and Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts when they were older.

The 23 rd Annual Fostering Hope Golf Classic in benefit of Voices for Children (VFC) took place at The Grand Del Mar on March 9, but the party really started the night before at the Cocktail and Auction Party that also benefited VFC. More than 140 golfers, tournament sponsors, and other VFC supporters attended the cocktail at The Grand Del Mar’s Club M. Event cochairs were Katie and Dan Sullivan and Connie and Richard Unger. Together, the golf tournament and the cocktail party netted more than $150,000 for the foster children VFC serves in San Diego. The evening included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment, and an incredible auction featuring Taylor Swift concert tickets, a private box at Petco Park, an in-home catered dinner, and more. Guest attendance helped VFC continue the vital work of the Court Appointed Special Advocate program, which transforms the lives of the county’s foster children by providing them with advocacy in the courtroom, classroom, and community.

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF CVMS Teams Excel at Science Olympiad
Six teams from CVMS participated in the recent San Diego Regional Science Olympiad (SO) competition. The students tested, wrote, experimented, and scored their way into first place by the end of the day. They competed against 116 teams from 37 schools in the Greater San Diego Area and earned a slot at the Southern California State SO competition in Anaheim on April 4. The events that the students take on are quite varied and interesting, and the students are coached by parent volunteers. Often the material expertise of the students surpasses even college level understanding of the subject. Each student typically spends eight to 15 hours a week studying for SO. There are three types of events at the competition: study, lab, and build events. CVMS has been involved in the program since its opening 10 years ago. CVMS has placed first at Regional for the past three years.

Award-winning Local Theatre’s Into The Woods
Erica Halpern Joins DMUSD Governing Board
The Del Mar Union School District has appointed their newest member Erica Halpern to the Governing Board of Trustees. Erica had been selected to fill the vacant seat from 11 well-qualified candidates with diverse experiences. After questioning each candidate to narrow down the field, the board discussed the qualifications that are needed for a board member. Erica was approved for appointment by a unanimous vote. Erica expressed her sentiments on her new place in the school district, “It matters very much to me that our schools continue to provide the topnotch and forward-thinking educational programs that brought us here. I will do everything I can to help make sure the district stays strong, our teachers are supported, and our kids flourish.” Erica will fill the seat that had been previously left vacant in January with the resignation of former board member Doug Perkins. The term expires in November 2016.

California Youth Conservatory Theatre (CYC) is in rehearsal for a spring production of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. The show will be produced and directed by CYC’s award-winning founder, Shaun T. Evans. Shaun has assembled an impressive team for this production, including a stellar cast which includes four well-known performers. These seasoned, experienced professionals will be performing alongside a cast of 35 of San Diego’s finest young performers. CYC Theatre pioneered the trend-setting model of pairing aspiring young performers with seasoned professional performers who serve as mentors for the student performers. This mentor-based training model has served CYC’s students very well as many of them have gone on to professional careers at very young ages. In its 11 short years of programming, CYC has already sent three of its own to the Broadway stage. Into the Woods will run April 10 through 18. For more information go to www.cyctheatre.com.
Nonprofit Promotes Computer Skills for Girls Carmel Valley nonprofit The League of Amazing Programmers is offering scholarships to four young girls, ages 10 and up, to learn how to code computers during the upcoming spring break. The workshop is “Intro to Java” and is one of the many programs offered by the afterschool organization. The league teaches Java programming to boys and girls in an ongoing, year-round curriculum, usually starting in the fifth grade. Their teachers are all volunteer Java professionals and each teacher has a small class usually made up of four students. While there is generally a waitlist for the continuing program, week-long workshops are offered during vacation periods. Scholarships are also offered based on financial need. The upcoming workshop for which the scholarships are being offered is a part of the GirlsRule program, which aims to foster computer skills for young girls. There currently is a waiting list, but new classes open up when new volunteers are found to teach. For more information go to www.jointheleague.org.

CCA 2014 Teacher of the Year Gives TEDx Talk Canyon Crest Academy 2014 Teacher of the Year Mark Raines will soon be giving a TEDx Talk in Tuscaloosa, AL. Mark is no stranger to TEDx events, as he participated in the TEDxYouth San Diego event two years ago. His previous talk largely focused on the neurological speech problem that he developed that has since been under control thanks to Parkinson’s medicine. One of Mark’s former students who lives in Tuscaloosa saw the talk online and was inspired to apply for a TEDx license and start his own event. Of course, he invited Mark to appear and give a follow-up talk. “This time, I am specifically talking about the idea of is it appropriate and beneficial for teachers to be open and vulnerable with their students in certain circumstances,” explained Mark. For those interested in watching, TEDxTuscaloosa will post Mark’s talk online about one month after the April 11 event.

The information is organized, easy to access, and updated regularly,” said PTMS Principal Mary Anne Nuskin. The site features easy access link on the front page to the school’s Facebook and Twitter account. Mary Anne further commented, “I’d encourage families to connect to PTMS not only through the site, but also Facebook and Twitter.” PTMS will open in the fall with a class of 200 to 220 seventh grade students. School Supports Ronald McDonald House
At a special Red Shoe Day two-day event at Ocean Air Elementary students, parents, and school supporters raised over $3,000 for San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House and participated in various kindnessthemed activities with the Red Shoe Crew. The Red Shoe Crew is a new program for the Ronald McDonald House that brings the message of kindness and charity to San Diego area schools through activities specially crafted for school-age children. As the inaugural school, Ocean Air students set a high bar with their philanthropic efforts. On the first day, Ocean Air Student Council members guided their fellow classmates as they wrote encouraging messages on a poster displayed at the Ronald McDonald House the following week. Students also colored pictures of Ronald’s shoe to be included in welcome bags for families. The school also held a student assembly with representatives from the Ronald McDonald House. On the second day, Ocean Air held its very own Red Shoe Day fundraiser. Student Council members stood in front of the school during the morning drop-off and collected donations in Ronald’s size 14 red shoes. To learn more visit www.rmhcsd.org.

For
Robert A. Sunstein, DDS, dentistry and orthodontics have been a passion since he was a child. “When I was young, I had a swimming accident and almost knocked out my front teeth. After moving them back into place myself, my dentist said that I was a natural. Later on, after visiting with my best friend’s dad who is an orthodontist, I decided that I wanted to focus on orthodontics,” revealed Dr. Sunstein. Knowing that pursuing his dream would take hard work and dedication, Dr. Sunstein earned his Bachelor of Science degree from San Diego State University, his DDS from UCLA and two subsequent post-doctoral degrees in esthetic dentistry and advanced education in general dentistry. After a residency in orthodontics at Columbia University in New York, Dr. Sunstein returned to Southern California. He opened his practice in 1998 and has been helping San Diegans smile ever since.
“
Most of my staff has been in dentistry and orthodontics all of their professional lives. And over the course of my career I have fixed every type of bite, from basic crowding to full jaw surgery. I really don’t think there’s a type of bite that I have not fixed.” ~Dr. Sunstein
Dr. Sunstein and his staff have a great deal of experience in the field of orthodontics and are committed to using that experience to provide the best service possible to their patients. Julie, Dr. Sunstein’s manager, is an orthodontic registered dental assistant and has been with him since he started his practice. “Most of my staff has been in dentistry and orthodontics all of their professional lives. And over the course of my career I have fixed every type of bite, from basic crowding to full jaw surgery. I really don’t think there’s a type of bite that I have not fixed,” stated Dr. Sunstein. In addition, he regularly pursues continuing education, attending a monthly study club and numerous orthodontic conferences throughout the country.
The practice offers state-of-the-art digital radiography and high quality orthodontic products including traditional and clear braces and Invisalign. Dr. Sunstein sees patients of all ages from children and teens to adults who want to improve their smiles. Regardless of the age of the patient, Dr. Sunstein and his staff enjoy celebrating the creation of a beautiful smile. “We have a party-like atmosphere when a patient gets his or her braces off, and each patient receives a gift from me and the staff,” said Dr. Sunstein. “It feels good to make hundreds of happy new smiles every year.”

TIRED OF TUMMY TROUBLE?
Follow Six Simple Steps Toward Better Digestive Health by KAYLAN GRAHAM, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Carmel Valley
Everyone experiences digestive distress from time to time – including diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas or heartburn. While many digestive issues are uncomfortable or embarrassing, they often are not serious and can be eliminated with some simple lifestyle changes. Try these six tips to help your digestive system stay on track.
3. Exercise regularly. Daily physical activity can help your body’s digestive system move things along and eliminate waste. Try walking, cycling, swimming, using an elliptical trainer, or hiking. 4. Maintain a healthy body weight. Extra pounds, especially around the midsection, can make digestive issues such as heartburn, gas, and burping, worse.
1. Eat small, frequent meals. Prevent indigestion, bloating and heartburn by changing how often you eat without increasing your overall calorie intake. Instead of three squares a day, enjoy four to five smaller meals and eat them more slowly. Taking time to eat and chewing food properly makes you feel full, which prevents the overeating that can upset your digestive tract.
5. Eat a balanced diet. Stay away from fried, greasy foods that are hard to digest, while making sure you include fiber-rich foods, which are important for overall digestive health. Fill your plate with foods like cherries, grapes, crunchy bell peppers, beans, whole grains, and nuts. Add fish to your list of healthy foods as well. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish can improve digestive issues by stabilizing cell walls to reduce inflammation. Probiotic-containing foods such as yogurt and kefir contain good bacteria that can crowd out any bad bacteria lurking in your gut.
2. Drink plenty of water. Water helps your body flush waste and toxins, and prevents constipation. Water needs vary by individual, depending on numerous factors such as activity level, geographic location, and temperature. If you have questions about how much water you need per day, check with your doctor. At the same time, limit alcohol, which interferes with acid secretion and nutrient absorption. Too much alcohol can contribute to heartburn, diarrhea, and liver issues.
6. Manage your stress level. A presentation can cause “butterflies in your stomach” or a sad experience is “gut-wrenching” because your brain has a direct impact on your stomach. Your digestive tract is controlled by a complex system of about 100 million nerves that starts in the brain and ends in the gut, so your emotions cause chemical and physical responses in the body that can result in pain and discomfort. If ongoing stress is an issue for you, try meditation or other relaxation techniques and make sure to get enough sleep.
Kaylan Graham, M.D., is an internal medicine physician at Scripps Clinic in Carmel Valley. Dr. Graham provides comprehensive primary care with special interest in preventive medicine and weight management.
When should you see your doctor? Sometimes an upset stomach or chronic heartburn can be signs of a more serious condition, such as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, or gallstones. Contact your primary care doctor if digestive issues interfere with your daily life. Seek immediate medical help if you have problems swallowing, bloody or black vomit or stool, abdominal pain, or have unexplained weight loss.

ndrea Younghusband Choy has called Carmel Valley home for about 12 years now along with her husband and two sons (ages 10 and 6). Originally from Vancouver, British Colombia, Andrea grew up around horses, and recalled, “My parents instilled a love of nature and the outdoors in me, and I really respect and appreciate animals, the environment, and the peace that both provide. I was always that child who was finding strays or injured animals that I’d either nurse back to health or take to an animal rescue.” Eager for her own sons to experience the joy of being around animals (specifically horses), Andrea purchased a “Riding Session Groupon” for them last year at the Laughing Pony Rescue ranch, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that rescues and rehabilitates horses in Rancho Santa Fe, and that was when her volunteering trajectory was set. Andrea exclaimed, “We took the boys to the ranch on a Thursday, and I began my horse rescue volunteering career the following Monday! I love this place, and what it stands for. It’s important to me to help those that don’t have a voice of their own, and to show these beautiful animals that they are special.” Some of Andrea’s volunteering tasks include preparing the horses’ daily supplements, hanging the hay bags, mucking the stalls, grooming

and exercising the horses, assisting with the riding sessions, and even helping with the birthday parties on the ranch. Andrea is also on the marketing committee, conceiving new ideas to raise funds and increase awareness about the nonprofit. She elaborated, “One of the ideas I came up with was to have horseshoes as souvenirs! I went to various ranches, collected the horseshoes, cleaned them up, spray painted them, and made tags for them with our name and logo.” The Laughing Pony Rescue is always looking for new organizations to partner with, such as those that benefit individuals with Down syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, and autism. The nonprofit also aims to create a facility where disabled children and adults can participate in therapeutic programs that feature the rescued horses. Andrea stated, “I'm hoping that a few kind and generous souls will read about our rescue and be inspired to become involved. We welcome sponsors and donations. I'm hoping to touch the heart of a local resident who has the heart for what we are doing and can financially assist Laughing Pony Rescue in its efforts to save and rehabilitate unwanted and abused horses – and to find them their forever homes!" ¢

:::: FROM THE DENTIST
THE BEST SMILE FOR YOUR CHILD by DR. CHRIS PHAM, Carmel Valley Pediatric Dentistry
C
hoosing a dentist for your child is no small task. Your child deserves the best smile that modern technology has to offer. Dentistry for children has come a long way. While most modern offices have TVs over dental chairs and fun playrooms to let your child know “this is their place,” there are other attributes to look for to ensure your child’s office delivers the best care around. Is the office dentist a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists? Dentists typically undergo four years of training after college. Pediatric dentists will attain a specialty degree over the course of an additional two to three years of residency.

These just aren’t small versions of big teeth we are dealing with so understanding growth and development is critical. It is important to understand how treatment choices affect the adult teeth coming in. These pediatric specialist offices will also be able to deliver the latest child specific techniques and materials that make it not only more comfortable for your child, but also more customized for young needs. Look for an office that has a doctor that is board certified – this designation has more distinction even amongst the specialized pediatric dentists. This distinction indicates they have succeeded on rigorous oral and written tests, keeping up with the most current research on a yearly basis.
meet-and-greet tour for you and your child to familiarize yourselves with the office. A great office will do all they can to make the visit to the dentist fun and easy. Since pediatric dentists see children only, in addition to decor, your child will see other kids in the office which can offer behavioral comfort. A great office will customize their interactions to your child’s needs. They only see children, and they love kids and it will show. This sets the tone for a lifetime of happy smiles. In our area check out Torrey Pines Pediatric Dentistry, Carmel Valley Pediatric Dentistry, and 4S Pediatric Dentistry.
Most importantly, make sure you connect and feel comfortable with the staff and doctor. Without comfort and trust, proper communication impedes choices and decisions for your child’s care. Call for a

SAME DAY SMILES CAD SMILES BRINGS NEW SMILES TO PATIENTS IN JUST ONE VISIT by RANDI CANTRELL | photos by Tyler McElhaney
E
ddie Corales of CAD Smiles believes that a person’s smile is an important part of their personality – it can reflect their lifestyle and attitude, and is often the first thing that others will notice. His passion to help others find their perfect smile began five years ago when he started CAD Smiles, a company that focuses on sameday smile makeovers. Today he works with over 200 dentists all over San Diego County who own CEREC CAD/CAM technology and provides tooth restorations, full-mouth rehabilitations, implants, dentures, and many other services. In previous years, if crowns or dental veneers were necessary for a patient, multiple procedures and a great deal of waiting time in-between visits was inevitable. The CEREC CAD/CAM one-of-a-kind technology has changed these dental procedures completely. It now allows the smile designer to take digital scans of a patient’s teeth and work with them to personally customize a smile in just a few hours. “CAD Smiles is the only company in San Diego and the U.S. that offers same-day smile makeovers with a certified technician, or smile designer, onsite,” Eddie explained. “This means that a patient can come to the dental office with a smile that is not satisfactory to them and leave with a smile that suits them.”

Dr. Brian Davey is one local dentist who works with CAD Smiles and the CEREC CAD/ CAM technology. Dr. Davey was recently awarded the 2014 Doctor of the Year for NLP Complete Health Dentistry and earned a leadership award earlier this year. He comes from a family of dentistry and was mentored by his uncle, a pediatric dentist, who recognized early on that Dr. Davey had the skill, both technical and interpersonal, to become a good dentist. Today, Dr. Davey’s mission is to enhance people’s lives through health, wellness, and fun. He is committed to making a difference in the health of the San Diego community by getting 20,000 people healthier before 2020. He believes the mouth is connected to the body, the body is connected to the family, and the family is connected to the health of a community. Dr. Davey explained, “Bringing together the medical and dental communities and creating an inter-personal collaboration for the greater good of San Diego and my patients is my mission.” The atmosphere of CAD Smiles Same Day Smile Centers is similar to that of a spa rather than a traditional dentist’s office. Patients are made to feel comfortable and at ease, and more importantly, are included in the process of designing their new smile. “With our service, there are no uncertainties,” Eddie continued. “The final result is predictable because the dentist, patient, and smile designer work
together in perfect synergy. We apply the principles of visual art to the composition of the customized smile to create a result that expresses the patient’s personality and lifestyle, and ensures harmony between the restorations and the patient’s physical appearance, values, and attitude. It is a service you won’t get anywhere else.”

IN BLOOM
Discover Flora, Fauna, and Fun at Local Botanical Gardens by LAINEY KRAL
W
ith the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, spring is the perfect time to explore the natural beauty in our backyard. San Diego is home to a varied collection of botanical gardens, bringing together native plant life with blooms from around the world. From orchids and butterflies to cacti and succulents, our local botanical gardens have a special something to share with everyone in the family.
Formerly known as the Quail Botanical Gardens, the San Diego Botanic Garden has been a colorful fixture in Encinitas for over 50 years. The sprawling garden features trees, flowers, and other plants from all over the world. Visitors can journey from the dragon tree grove of the Canary Islands to the cork oak trees and irises of the Mediterranean – or learn more about local history along the Native Plants and Native People Trail. Kids will enjoy the Hamilton Children’s Garden with a mountain stream, elephant foot tree forest, and tree house to explore. Nearby is the Bird and Butterfly garden, filled with flowers planted especially to attract our feathered and fluttering friends. Visit the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens to experience a unique blend of art and nature. With the goal to “Bring Together People, Nature, and Art,” the gardens showcase a stunning range of international and local plants as well as unique artistic pieces integrated into the garden layout. Alta Vista Botanical Gardens accepts artwork on a consignment basis,

including sculptures, walkways, and walls created by talented local artisans. The site also features the California Natives Garden, Children’s Garden, and Antique Rose Collection along with a variety of culinary and medicinal herbs. One of San Diego’s best-preserved cultural landmarks also hosts many of the city’s horticultural treasures. Balboa Park is home to over a dozen beautiful gardens, including the Casa del Rey Moro Garden, the Children’s Ethnobotany Garden, the Japanese Friendship Garden, and the Rose Garden. And overlooking the Lily Pond and Lagoon is the park’s iconic Botanical Building. The impressive lathwork structure – one of the largest of its kind – houses over 2,000 cycads, ferns, orchids, and more. A touch-and-smell garden lets visitors interact more closely with chocolate mint, lemon mint, and other unusually aromatic plants. Be sure to point out the carnivorous pitcher plants and Venus fly traps to the kids!

Beauty DR. YOO: DELIVERING EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS IN A SPA-LIKE SETTING
Dr.
by LAINEY KRAL
Sirius K. Yoo and the SKY Facial Plastic Surgery team are committed to their goal of “delighting the patient,” emphasizing the importance of individualized attention and a relationship of trust between patient and doctor. “As a family-owned and operated practice, we are dedicated to providing you with impeccable service from start to finish,” shared Dr. Yoo. “From the moment you step through the door, you’ll have the undivided attention of a small team of professionals who are devoted to making you feel perfectly at home.” The boutique medical practice specializes in skincare, injectables, the laser facelift and cosmetic surgery for the face and neck. Located in 4S Ranch, SKY feels more like a spa than a clinic, and the SKY Team takes the time to make sure patients are relaxed and comfortable. “We never rush through appointments. We want each visit to feel like a mini-retreat for our patients where they receive the best care from our friendly and professional staff,” said Dr. Yoo. Board-certified in both facial plastic surgery and head and neck surgery, Dr. Yoo is well-equipped to provide the quality of care and results his patients are looking for. He is an active member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and has taught advanced techniques to other surgeons at national meetings. He also completed a prestigious fellowship at Stanford University and has been published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery. Dr. Yoo uses his expertise to help each patient achieve a natural look, rather than applying generalized techniques that result in an “overdone” appearance. “I believe that every face and personality is unique. I work closely with each patient to develop a treatment plan uniquely customized to their skin type, facial structure, and aesthetic desires,” related Dr. Yoo. “I love helping our patients feel more confident in their everyday lives.”

SPRING
SUNSHINE
Lic # 481870 SINCE 1977
Brings energy savings
N
ow that the lovely weather has reminded you of the arrival of spring, there are a few ideas worth considering besides spring cleaning. We are all aware that increasing energy costs, legislation, decommission of San Onofre (estimated at $4.4 billion), and warming weather trends are causing substantial increases in residential utility rates. And we well recall how much our utility bills can be at the height of the summer. However, as a homeowner you can empower yourself by taking advantage of programs available in San Diego. The Home Energy Renovation Opportunity Program (HERO) allows homeowners to apply for low-cost loans making energyefficient, renewable energy products more affordable. HERO provides 100% financing at low interest rates, flexible payment terms, and repayments through your property taxes. The HERO
WITH 38 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY, NATURAL ENERGY HAS INSTALLED MORE SOLAR THAN ALL OTHER LOCAL COMPANIES COMBINED loan stays with the property even if it is sold and payments may be tax deductible, lowering the effective interest rate. Now that you have empowered yourself, consider solar energy for your home. Why all the interest in solar? Solar panels are popping up on roofs all over the neighborhood. What do your neighbors know that you don’t? It is undeniable that we all pay the proverbial sunshine tax to live in beautiful San Diego. Why not take advantage of such an abundant, clean, renewable energy source? Installations continue to boom and solar is more affordable than ever. According to Solar Energy Industries Association, (SEIA) this is because “since the third quarter of 2010, the average price of a photovoltaic (PV) panel has dropped by 63%.” Your neighbors also know that the federal solar tax credits end next year, and in addition to the HERO program, there are attractive finance and leasing programs with no money down for solar installations. They may also know that Natural Energy is the leading company in San Diego for solar. With 38 years in the industry, Natural Energy has installed more solar than all other local companies combined and offers solar PV systems made right here in the United States. Consider Natural Energy for your solar energy needs and go solar now! ¢ 52 • 92130Magazine.com • April | May 2015

NORTH SHORE GIRLS SOFTBALL CELEBRATES OPENING DAY photos provided by NORTH SHORE GIRLS SOFTBALL
T
he North Shore Girls Softball league kicked off its 2015 season with a special opening day ceremony. The league honored three different teams who went to the state tournament, including the 8U, 10U, and 12U teams. Their success marked the first time in the league’s history where three teams advanced to the state tournament! The 12U team even qualified and played in the Western Nationals Tournament in Roseville, CA. The league also inaugurated its first entrants into the North Shore Girls Softball Hall of Fame. The first award went to Coach Karla Wilburn, who played softball for Torrey Pines High School and the University of Virginia. She now devotes her time to the girls
softball league as a coach. She hopes to continue to inspire female athletes as a coach and is extremely committed to the league. The entire Bulatao family was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. John Bulatao and his late wife spent countless hours coaching their three daughters’ teams and even coached separate teams when there weren’t enough volunteers available. North Shore Girls Softball is looking forward to another season, and with over 250 players registered so far, it’s sure to be an exciting time for players, coaches, and parents. To learn more about North Shore Girls Softball league’s upcoming games and events head to www.eteamz.com/northshoregirlssoftball.

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
92130 a Seller’s Market? Absolutely!
I
n one of my previous articles, I wrote about the first half of 2014 as being a strong seller’s market and then... the bottom fell out! Well, guess what? In 2015, we really are in a seriously strong seller’s market! December proved to be the first indicator the market had switched gears. Carmel Valley has had 67 homes (detached, attached, townhomes, etc.) close escrow, since Jan. 1, 2015. The average number of days on the market was an amazing 47 days. That may seem high but, take into consideration that many of those homes had well over 100 days on the market. Over one third of the 67 homes sold had a market time of 15 days or less! It has become increasingly noticeable that the desirability of Carmel Valley is putting local homes at the top buyers’ lists. The beautiful, sunny Carmel Valley is one of the most sought-after markets to find a home. With the moderate climate year-round, idyllic location, close promiximity to the beach, and highperforming schools, it’s no wonder so many families are looking to move here. Although it is ranked as one of the most expensive markets to purchase a home, the Carmel Valley housing market is making a push forward and seeing some positive signs in 2015.
Don’t hesitate to get a new home or move up to the home of your dreams. The San Diego housing market is in a great place starting out in 2015. Investing in a home in San Diego County at this time is a great move for any family. Thinking of changing your address? Let our team of elite real estate professionals assist you! We can be found at Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty at 3860 Valley Centre Dr. Suite 409, San Diego, CA 92130, next door to Vons. Carmel Valley School Sets Record for Group Hug CANYON CREST ACADEMY STAFF AND STUDENTS COME TOGETHER TO PROMOTE UNITY
N
othing brings people together quite like a common goal, and Canyon Crest Academy knows a thing or two about bringing people together. Literally as many as 191 students and staff of CCA united recently in the effort to beat the world record for biggest hug. The previous held record was for a 70-person hug, which is less than half of the total participants in CCA’s record-breaking endeavor. The inspiration behind the ambitious hug came from students who participate in the on-campus PALS program. The advisor to PALS, Laura Krogh, explained the process, “We wanted to find a fun, unique, and interactive way to unify our school as a whole.” The PALS class organized a week called “We are CCA” that aimed to generate student pride and foster a school-wide connection. They ultimately decided there was no better way to bring the community together than to conduct one massive hug. The hug represents the importance of keeping CCA’s atmosphere full of excitement and exemplifies the pride CCA students and staff have in their school. CCA staff attribute the hug’s great success to the fact that their student body and staff members are always open to trying something new, taking risks, and stepping outside of their comfort zone to make the school a special and unique place to be. Laura described the accomplishment as such, “People want to be here and they want to be involved on campus, which fosters a supportive and inclusive environment overall.”
