ith all of the recent rain and cold weather, I can’t believe we are finally thinking about summer! I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a bit overwhelming. Several months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, we have been publishing our popular Annual Summer Camp Guide for the past five years. Although we had no idea of how popular these issues were going to become, this year I am proud to present you with the largest Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 32) that we’ve published. It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in 92130 Magazine!

Is your child struggling in school homework or grades? Confused by Common Core? Are you tired of watching your child struggle in math, reading, or getting ideas on paper?

The Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) is offering a different kind of summer camp. Their cognitive Boot Camps don’t just maintain, they build new underlying skills that make learning and assignments easier and more efficient. TLC Boot Camps are fun but aren’t doing fancy games that do the processing for the students. They are addressing challenges in the underlying processing skills that are not taught in school or traditional summer programs. TLC solves learning problems by helping students develop underlying processing skills that are often overlooked, yet are critical to academic and social success. Make the most of summer. Have fun creating a “new normal”

Example: Perceptual reasoning, visual-spatial and memory skills are critical to efficiency in learning Common Core math and literacy

Summer program small groups Math skills using perceptual reasoning – 1st grade - Algebra ll Writing skills using perceptual reasoning – 1st-9th grade Reading Comprehension using logic & reasoning – 2nd-9th Using Film Making to build Executive Function Skills

There is a reason your bright child struggles in school, and it’s not your fault, your child’s school or that your child is lazy. Weak or inefficient processing skills will cause a bright student to struggle.

And in TLC tradition – individual therapies • memory (auditory and visual) • processing speed • auditory and visual processing • core learning skills

TLC Boot Camps make Common Core concepts accessible to your child, allowing your child to become a confident, motivated and

independent learner.

hen Andrew Vu was only four years old, he began formal classical piano lessons. by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by PortrArt Creations “However, my interest in music was rooted much earlier in my toddler years as I watched and admired my older brother, Khoa, play the instrument,” he said. Since that early interest was awakened, Andrew’s accolades have been many: first place in the San Diego Symphony’s Hot Shots Young Artist’s Competition, the 2018 Music Teacher’s Association of CA Chopin Festival, 2016 Sonata Festival, 2015 Concerto Competition, and the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall. Andrew even received the 2015 Mayoral Award for Outstanding Asian Pacific Islander, established by Mayor Kevin Faulconer to recognize high school students for their hard work, academic achievements, and community services. “Receiving the award was very surreal to me since I was not expecting it at all!” Andrew smiled. Along with volunteering as pianist at St. Therese of Carmel Catholic Church for several years, Andrew has also enjoyed performing solo and collaborative concerts at school events, senior homes, community events, and libraries throughout California. Reaching out to the next generation of musicians, Andrew teaches private lessons to young children, accompanies the children’s choirs at St. James Catholic Church, and mentors at the Carmel Valley Summer Symphony. “Music has provided me the opportunities to make invaluable lifelong friendships and to serve the community,” he shared. He is also involved in jazz band and varsity track and field at Canyon Crest Academy, where he excels academically. In his free time, Andrew enjoys nature by hiking through wilderness areas and interacting with its creatures (he’s always wished to rescue, raise, and release stranded otter pups), fishing with his dad, making desserts for his mom, or playing billiard, bowling, or foosball games with his younger brother. Andrew believes that he is called to serve others daily. “My achievements speak for the unsurpassed love and support I have received from my family, my teachers, and my community,” he said. “I, however, don’t want to be known for my achievements, but rather as a team player in my community.” 

The contest serves as a fast-paced test of students’ familiarity with basic math skills, in which they individually solve as many of the 100 problems as they can within a 30-minute time limit, covering a variety of mathematical topics. “It’s a lot like a musician practicing scales,” said NA&T Director of Academic Competitions Tom Clymer. “These common operations and problems can become second nature and nearly instantaneous.” Several CVMS students received individual awards at the competition, helping their team place first in the nation. Kami and his business partner and wife, Dr. Nazli Keri, founded The Super Dentists to be a “cure” for common fears of the dental experience. “We decided to reinvent and transform the dental experience by changing everything people hate about the dentist,” Kami explained. “We’ve done this with delivering the highest quality of care in a super fun way.” The Super Dentist experience includes superheroes, supervillains, music (some even written by Kami himself), and augmented reality experiences. “It’s incredibly rewarding and humbling to see kids and parents running into our practices, laughing, playing, taking photos with our characters, and wanting our autographs,” Kami acknowledged. Dr. Kami Hoss and his team at The Super Dentists take their show on the road by presenting at community programs and speaking engagements and participating in career fairs at local schools. They also host on-site job shadowing opportunities, wellness fairs, and mouth guard fitting clinics. “Each spring, hundreds of children across the county receive free dental care from our pediatric dentists during Free Dental Day,” Kami shared. And for the past 15 years, The Super Dentists has hosted its popular Candy Buy

Back program during the week of Halloween, collecting more than 20,000 pounds of candy that is donated to military troops overseas. Finally, Kami is helping spread the word about the importance of oral health and its impact on psychological and physical health in his new book, If Your Mouth Could Talk, which will be released later this year. In addition to supporting the community’s physical health, Kami also helps young people learn about financial health through his work with Junior Achievement (JA) of San Diego County’s BizTown. In this program, fourth and fifth graders learn about financial literacy in a fun, real-world setting. “The Super Dentists is also part of the Finance Park, another JA project that works with high school kids to help them find what they want to do as a career,” explained Kami. As an accomplished musician, Kami has made it a point that The Super Dentists support local music initiatives like Classics 4 Kids, a nonprofit organization that aims to inspire children through classical music. Kami understands the inspiration of music first hand. He has played the piano and keyboard since he was a child and started writing music as a teenager. “I honestly think that my creativity around every new initiative we come up with at The Super Dentists is because of my music background,” he shared. Dr. Kami Hoss and The Super Dentists’ contributions to the community have been highlighted since 2017 when they became a recognized partner of Live Well San Diego. Kami said his practice “is fully committed to its vision of contributing towards a healthy, safe, and thriving community.” 

TPHS STUDENTS PRESENT BUSINESS IDEAS AT PITCHFEST

O

ver 50 juniors and seniors from Torrey Pines High School (TPHS) attended Junior Achievement’s (JA) PitchFest in February, an event that allows young adults to pitch their business ideas to local entrepreneurs and business professionals. The students – all taking the Advanced Business Management course at TPHS – prepared by brainstorming, creating elevator pitches, and using visuals to demonstrate their businesses. They also benefited from mentoring by industry professionals provided by a partnership with JA. The winning team was Braveio from TPHS, who created an app that connects students to potential art and writing contests, and can help students find scholarships and grants. With the competitive nature of high school, the app helps students find opportunities to add awards and other recognitions to their resume or college applications. TPHS’s Pocket Tutor team won the Change Maker Business award

for creating an app that connects students with other students at their school for tutoring. “The problem they are solving is that tutoring is insanely expensive, and it puts upper income students at a much larger advantage for college, creating a very disproportionate gap at the college level and beyond,” said TPHS teacher Shannon Essrig. “This app allows high school students to tutor (creating jobs), and also allows students to get tutoring help at an affordable rate.” The two teams will now prepare for the final JA Company Program Competition on April 30, where they will compete with other local teams for San Diego’s Company of the Year. Since 1950, JA San Diego programs have reached more than one million students, ensuring that they are prepared for the future by teaching them how to get a job, start a business, and manage money. TALENT IN TRAINING Studio West Offers Music Production Camps for Young Musicians

S

tudio West has been San Diego’s premier recording studio for over 40 years, but recently some new clients have been working there. In 2015, owner Peter Dyson started a series of week-long music production camps for middle and high school students, largely due to his own children’s musical journey. “My daughter plays the harp and my son is a drummer. They both had amazing teachers and great experiences performing with various ensembles, but a recording studio is a different environment that helps musicians grow.” The week-long camps involve instruction in songwriting, production and performance. Many students have a background in music theory and traditional instruments, but it’s not a requirement. “A laptop is now a musical instrument, just like a piano or guitar, but to play it requires the same instruction, discipline, and hard work that’s required for more traditional instruments,” said Dyson.

Performing in a studio is intimidating, but students rise to the occasion. As the lead instructor, San Diego songwriter, performer, and father of two multi-instrumentalist preteen boys Shawn Rohlf explains it, “I’m amazed at the musicianship and work ethic of the kids. If they are this good now, where will they be in 10 years?” At the end of the week, parents and students listen to the songs that students have written and produced over the week. The experience leaves many ready for more. As student Chrysta Hlavacek (17) puts it, “Making music with talented artists is my dream job, and going to Studio West helps me get there.” 

T

he team at Outpost Summer Camps believes that, now more than ever, children should have the opportunity to be away from their electronic devices for extended periods of time. And, of course, there is nothing better than a summer day camp experience to make that a reality. Founded in 2001, the camp serves over 1,500 children every summer in a completely outdoor and screen-free environment. Their core mission is to provide group-centered and enriching camp experiences for children and young adults. The Outpost experience has three “pillars” that parents have loved for more

“BY STAYING LONGER AT CAMP, CHILDREN OF ALL TEMPERAMENTS HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO LEARN NAMES, GET COMPLETELY COMFORTABLE WITH ROUTINES, AND MAKE AND KEEP NEW FRIENDS.”

than 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, “old-fashioned” camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The camp’s three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique in today’s norm of week-long programs. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Cultivating friendships and making meaningful connections is one of the most rewarding and fun aspects of a camp experience, so Outpost strives to make this a priority for campers. Another way the camps stand out is with their continuous commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under San Diego County permit as an Organized Camp. The team at Outpost takes both the physical and emotional safety of campers seriously. The camp’s staff is trained in American Red Cross CPR and prior to the start of camp, they participate in comprehensive sessions on emergency procedures, crisis management, positive discipline, and child development. Ultimately, they strive to create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment for all campers. Stuart and his wife Kelly, a clinical psychologist, run the camp as their family business, bringing years of child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. he Maranatha Christian Schools Summer Program focuses on the whole child – from academics, athletics, and the arts to teaching students how they can make an impact in their community and world. Class sizes are small and focused, offering the students dedicated time with teachers, staff, and other students. New friends are made and summer memories are created in a loving, safe, clean, and nurturing environment. Morning and afternoon classes are available in math, English, dance, cooking, STEAM, and indoor and outdoor sports. There are also two classes specifically focused on helping students transition into Kindergarten and first grade. There is a three-week commitment for all classes, with two separate sessions (June 24-July 12 and July 15-Aug. 2). Because of families’ busy schedules, MCS now has extended care available for an additional fee. MCS also offers a preschool summer camp program Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This weekly program has four sessions, beginning June 3. The curriculum incorporates math, literacy, and science exploration into fun and creative activities. Additional special camps include two athletics clinics – a basketball intensive and a mini cheer clinic – and a three-day performing arts workshop. Maranatha Christian Schools invites families to step onto their campus and experience the difference. The admissions staff is readily available to give tours and is currently accepting applications for preschool through 12th grade for the 2019-2020 school year. Online camp registration opens mid-March. For more information, please visit www.MaranathaChristianSchools.org. 

ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 14 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford, a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education, and to get students excited about using math and science. money sense

7 Key Retirement Dates You Don’t Want to Miss Setting out on the road to retirement? Based on your age, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management highlights the key factors to be aware of that could potentially help you maximize your income, minimize your taxes and avoid penalties along the way.

years before many people retire, key dates and deadlines pop up — things like being able to make catch-up contributions to your 401(k) and IRA starting at age 50 (and reduce taxable income) and signing up for medicare Part A at age 65 (usually at no cost to you), even if you are still working. If you are not aware of them, they are easy to miss. “The decisions you make during preand post-retirement years can be important in determining how much money will be available during retirement so it is important to understand these key dates and their implications,” says Debra Greenberg, director, Personal Retirement strategy and solutions at Bank of America merrill Lynch. It is also a good idea to check in with your financial advisor and tax advisors regularly in the years leading up to retirement to assess your progress towards your goals, she adds. Here is what you should know — and when you should know it — as you navigate the road to retirement readiness.

Age 50: Play Catch up you are now eligible to make “catch up” contributions to 401(k)s and other employersponsored retirement plans, as well as to IRAs. In 2018, that means you can stash away an extra $6,000 per year in your 401(k) and an extra $1,000 per year in an IRA or Roth IRA, and reduce your taxable income at the same time.

AGE 59½: You can say goodbye to early withdrawal penalties once you reach age 59 ½, withdrawals from employer-sponsored retirement plans and IRAs are no longer subject to the 10% early withdrawal federal tax — though you still may owe regular income tax on the distributions. Greenberg suggests, it is generally better to keep your tax-advantaged retirement savings

or investments intact so that you do not sacrifice potential growth.

AGE 62: You can claim Social Security now — or later Age 62 is the minimum age at which you can choose to begin receiving social security benefits. Keep in mind that for each year you postpone taking this benefit (until age 70), your monthly check will be larger.

AGE 65: You can (and should) apply for Medicare If you are already receiving social security, you are automatically enrolled in both Parts A and B of medicare. But if you are not yet receiving social security, you will need to apply for medicare during one of the designated annual enrollment periods. your initial enrollment period lasts for seven months, beginning three months before the month in which you turn 65. If you are not currently receiving coverage through an employer, missing your enrollment date may mean penalties or even higher premiums for the rest of your life.

AGE 70½: You Must Begin Taking RMDs When you reach age 70 ½, you must begin taking required minimum distributions (RmDs), from Traditional 401(k)s, Roth 401 (k)s or Traditional IRAs. RmD amounts are calculated as a percentage of your account balances and are based on your life expectancy. If you don’t take the full amount of these annual distributions within the required time frame, you’ll incur a significant additional federal tax of 50% of the difference between what you received and the required amount you should have withdrawn. Be sure to speak with your tax advisor about requirements that may be specific to your situation — and to your financial advisor about how to align these key dates with your retirement income strategy. Following these guidelines, could help you potentially minimize your taxes, maximize your income and steer clear of penalties along the way.

AGE 66: You Have Reached Full Retirement Age If you were born between 1943 and 1954, age 66 is your “full retirement age” for social security. That is the age at which you may first become entitled to full or unreduced retirement benefits. For those born after 1954, full retirement age will increase by two months every year until the current maximum of age 67, for those born in 1960 and later.

AGE 70: Claim Your Maximum Benefit If you have waited until your 70th birthday to begin taking social security, you will now get the biggest possible monthly benefit, which may be as much as 76% more than if you had started receiving payments at age 62. Any further delay in claiming will not increase the size of your check.

Painting PROFESSIONALS

Colossus Painting Provides Its Customers With a Better Product for an Affordable Price

rior to starting Colossus Painting, Joshua Berner sold paint to contractors, using his expertise to teach them how to resolve issues and specify which types of paint would work best for a given project. It wasn’t long before Joshua decided to use his knowledge of the painting industry to start his own painting company and, in 2008, Colossus Painting was born. “I wanted to create a company that could serve customers much better and provide a better product for an affordable price,” Joshua explained. Today, Colossus Painting has made Joshua’s dream a reality by providing interior and exterior painting of homes and businesses, while also offering repair of stucco, drywall, and wood. “Colossus is unique in its approach to a project,” stated Joshua. “We tailor your job to the best system or options of systems for your home. This differs from a lot of other companies in the area.” Color retention is a big issue with exterior paint jobs here in San Diego as well as washability and durability they contend with on interior jobs. Colossus has solutions for this. “Our feeling is when your job is complete, it should stand out in appearance and longevity compared to those painted by someone else,” Joshua added. It’s important to note that a little paint can go a long way in changing the appearance of a home. “People forget about paint,” said Joshua. “It is a great way to make your home look great in a relatively short amount of time. We paint and stain a lot of cabinets, front doors, and garage doors.” From the beginning, the team at Colossus Painting has made an effort to give back. “We have helped a lot of schools and people,” explained Joshua. “We’ve painted homes for free. It’s a joy for us and our workers as much as it is for the homeowner who is having a difficult life situation.” Joshua is proud of his family-oriented, friendly, and professional staff. “I believe that when someone hires us, they realize they are dealing with a knowledgeable and professional company and will receive a great paint job,” shared Joshua. “We help the customer through the process and can get them the right tools to make their job successful.”  60 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2019
