FROM THE PUBLISHER VO L . 9, N O. 1 TM
Please Support Local Businesses
I
’ve published community magazines for 11 years. And my father has been in the publishing industry his entire life. As a junior in high school, I remember the night that the United States started bombing military targets in Iraq and Kuwait. I went with my dad after midnight down to the local newspaper where he worked. I literally watched him order the press to be stopped, scrap the originally planned cover story, and print a new cover page telling its readers that America Is At War! It was one of the first times that I began to realize how the media worked and the impact that it has in our society. I was proud to get a glimpse behind the curtain. While we didn’t have a “stop the press” moment here at ZCode once our state and local communities began being ordered to shut down all nonessential businesses and shelter-in-place, it has certainly turned our small business community upside down. As a business owner, one must prepare for slow times and potential economic downturns – it comes with the responsibilities of entrepreneurship. However, a small business being prepared for all of its customers to vanish and immediately shut their business down is asking the impossible. How does one prepare for that? It’s never happened before. Although I understand that the shelter-in-place ordinance is necessary for the safety of everyone, my heart goes out to all of our advertising participants (that financially make this magazine possible) and other local community business owners. Most of them have shut down their business and made the difficult decision to furlough their employees – they didn’t have a choice. At this time, uncertainty as to when they will be allowed to open back up is the primary concern. Another concern is that when businesses are finally allowed to operate again, will the customers return fast enough to make it financially feasible to do so? One thing is for certain. We are all in this together. It’s going to take dedication and a willingness from the community to help small businesses get back on their feet. Businesses will need their customers back. It will take revenue for these businesses to be able to bring their employees back. WE CAN ALL HELP! If you are able to assist, I ask that you consider making a donation to local businesses that affect your life. Twenty dollars, 50 dollars, 100 dollars or more – it all adds up. Maybe it’s a local restaurant... Perhaps a local dentist or orthodontist... Consider your hair stylist, your child’s gym or dance studio, or even this magazine. Let the local businesses in your life know that you are there for them, appreciate them, and are willing to assist. We don’t know how the world will be after this crisis is over. But coming together as a community and supporting each other gives every business the best chance to land on their feet and continue providing the services and products that make our town so special. Stay healthy XXXXX readers! 92130 readers!

Honored Hero CANCER SURVIVOR CADEN TIMMER INSPIRES OTHERS WITH HIS STORY
by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by PortrArt Creations
H
alfway through his fifth grade year, Caden Timmer got some news that would change his life forever. He and his family had just returned from a two-week trip to Thailand and Cambodia when he started feeling unwell. Fever and a bad leg pain appeared and wouldn’t recede. His parents thought maybe he’d contracted something overseas but a trip to the hospital and several blood tests later confirmed that Caden had leukemia. “They told me that I would have to live in the hospital for one month and not go to school for a whole year,” he said. “My treatment would be for three and a half years...that sounded really long.” That was January 2017. Caden was able to graduate from Sycamore Ridge Elementary and attended Pacific Trails Middle School by December of his sixth grade year. “I was so happy to be back with my friends,” he confirmed. Recently able to return to playing sports – he plays soccer with the DMCV Sharks, flag football, and golf – and traveling, he was also named the 2020 Honored Hero by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student of the Year campaign. Student leaders in the program fundraise for LLS over a seven-week period in honor of children who are blood cancer survivors. “I felt honored to be chosen,” Caden said. “The students that are participating are working very hard to raise money for a great cause.”

Inspired by his parents – scientists who work on creating medicines to help people – Caden sees math as the best school subject (because there’s only one right answer) and wants to be a cancer research scientist someday. He likes doing Bollywood dancing and snuggling with his dog, Maddie, “the cutest dog in the world!” Living in Carmel Valley since birth, Caden appreciates having his friends in the neighborhood, being close to the beach, and being able to walk or bike to school. His family loves traveling all over the world, but his mother’s hometown in New Hampshire is a favorite destination. At home in 92130, Caden likes going to the beach, doing art, and playing games. “I am really happy to be back to my regular life and to start high school at CCA next year,” he smiled. ¢ 8 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • SUMMER CAMP GUIDE 2020

Hawaiian FRESH SEAFOOD
The Spirit of Hawaii Can Be Found Right Here in San Diego by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos provided by Hawaiian Fresh Seafood
H
awaiian Fresh Seafood, Inc. is a top seafood distributor and market that offers fresh seafood products to more than 2,000 customers, including top chefs across the country. Hawaiian Fresh Seafood owns and operates a fleet of three longline tuna fishing vessels that supply their wholesale division, as well as their market. This allows Frank Porcelli, owner of Hawaiian Fresh Seafood, and his team to oversee and control the entire process from start to finish. “Our customers appreciate this because they know where their seafood is coming from. Traceability is so important these days,” explained Porcelli. Customers who enter the Hawaiian Fresh Seafood market will see display cases filled with a variety of fresh fish fillets and loins, as well as an assortment of freshly made poke. According to Porcelli, customers can purchase poke by the pound or in a poke bowl with either brown or white rice. “We’re especially known for our fresh ahi,” revealed Porcelli. Porcelli originally opened Hawaiian Fresh Seafood in Honolulu in 2006. A Poway High School graduate, he has deep roots in the local community, as well as in Hawaii. “I grew up in Poway and enlisted in the Navy right out of high school. I was on the USS Midway CV-41 during the Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm). I moved to Hawaii in 2002, and a few years later, I started Hawaiian Fresh Seafood,” said Porcelli. When he relocated his business to San Diego in 2019, it was important to him to keep the name Hawaiian Fresh Seafood for two reasons: the established reputation and keeping the `uhane, or “spirit of Hawaii,” at the heart of the business. “Although we’re new to the seafood scene in San Diego County, we’re not new to the industry. We’ve been building our brand since 2006, and the Hawaiian Fresh “Our customers Seafood name has become synonymous with fresh, quality appreciate this seafood,” shared Porcelli, who lives once again in Poway. because they know As a small, family-owned company, Porcelli is involved in all aspects of the business and even puts on where their seafood his boots every day to work side-by-side with his crew. is coming from.” Each order is hand-cut and chosen for each individual order with the customer’s needs in mind. H
arbaugh Seaside Trails, the three-acre coastal overlook linking Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Solana Beach, is now officially open to the public and accessible for hiking, wildlife photography, dog walking, and peaceful contemplation in nature, following a special grand opening celebration in February. The trails feature a wave-shaped walking trail, spectacular ocean views from the shell-shaped observation deck, over 8,000 native plants that represent four Southern California coastal habitats, and the donor monument designed by artist Betsy Schulz with lagoon wildlife-themed mosaics, uniting the Coastal Rail Trail art theme. Once slated for development for many years, the land was secured by Nature Collective, made possible by a $1.15 million gift from The Harbaugh Foundation, and is now designated permanent open space, open daily from sunrise to sunset. “We saved these views together!”

DENTIST PROFILE
In Response to COVID-19 DR. KAMI HOSS AND THE SUPER DENTISTS TRANSFORM THE AT-HOME DENTAL EXPERIENCE by SAMANTHA EDWARDS | photo provided by The Super Dentists
T
he COVID-19 outbreak has undoubtedly caused challenges for everyone, including the dental industry. The Super Dentists, the largest pediatric dentistry practice in San Diego, initially responded to the crisis by communicating with patients and increasing the healthcare protocols that were already in place. However, following strong recommendations by the California Dental Association and the shelter in place order from Governor Gavin Newsom, The Super Dentists made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend non-urgent treatment. They are now only seeing emergency patients at their most centrally located office in Kearny Mesa. “We know daily routines have been upended by COVID-19, but children’s oral health care routines shouldn’t be one of them,” said The Super Dentists Co-Founder Dr. Kami Hoss. “Ensuring children brush two times each day for two minutes at a time and floss at least once a day can keep dental issues at bay until normal dental visits resume.” The Super Dentists team created a virtual version of their Super Lounges, designed to replicate
the in-office experience online by providing entertaining and educational content like movies, toothbrushing songs, video story time, and activities for kids. You may not be able to go visit them, but your favorite Super Dentists characters can come visit you through their augmented reality technology. The Super Dentists encourage patients to utilize the augmented reality toothbrush and the free VIVARRA Dental app to help maintain their oral healthcare routine. “Reinventing and transforming the dental experience is something we’ve been doing for 24 years, and COVID-19 hasn’t changed that,” said Dr. Kami Hoss. “We’ve just flipped the script and are reinventing and transforming the at-home dental experience until we can see our patients again.” While The Super Dentists await direction on a re-opening date, they are donating toothbrushes to local nonprofits and continue to communicate with patients regularly. “COVID-19 may have created unforeseen challenges for our practice, patients, employees, and doctors, but we are innovating and will return stronger and better. We are grateful to our loyal patients and look forward to welcoming them back into our offices soon,” Dr. Kami Hoss said.

Going Virtual
LOCAL GIRL SCOUTS CONTINUE COLLABORATING ON PROJECTS
C
armel Valley Girl Scout Cadette Troop 3082 is continuing to meet, learn, and achieve while adapting to social distancing guidelines. The troop is now meeting virtually, and the girls are working together to earn their Silver Awards. For the first project, the girls are developing a program to equip children with diabetes who might feel ostracized to educate their peers about what it’s like to live with the condition. For example, why a classmate might have to leave lunch early to take an insulin shot or have to go to the nurse’s office. The troop is currently working on adding digital components to the project to make it more applicable during this time. For the second project, the troop plans to create a program to supply homeless pet owners with pet food. The troop is also exploring a third Silver Award project, which focuses on assisting seniors living in isolation during the coronavirus outbreak.
The concept is currently a badge that the troop created, with activities including making face masks and putting together activity bags filled with books, games, and craft supplies for seniors in the community. The troop has also reached out to several organizations serving low-income families about collaborating to distribute the activity bags to children. The troop, led by Stephanie McGuire and Alice Schlesier, participates in the Girl Scout Cookie Program each year. A portion of their earnings will be used to purchase supplies and materials for their Silver Award projects, and they are saving up for a future trip to San Francisco where the Cadettes will bridge to Seniors, the next level of Girl Scouting. To learn more about Girl Scouts San Diego and opportunities for girls in grades K-12 and adult volunteers, visit sdgirlscouts.org or contact Andrea Rentería at 619-610-0774 or arenteria@sdgirlscouts.org. ¢

CCA Debate Team Success photo courtesy of Gloria Goldstein
The Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) Debate Team had a successful tournament at the 34th Annual Stanford University Invitational. Varsity debaters from across the country gather to compete at the prestigious annual event, competing in the Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, Parliamentary, and Policy categories. CCA students Danny An and Alex Tahan, representing Varsity Public Forum, achieved triple-octafinalist status, winning a trophy. Jacob Spiegelman, representing Varsity Lincoln-Douglas, progressed onto a bid round. Danny also received top speaker points, ranking 21st out of 350 participants. “The Stanford Invitational brings some of the top debaters from across the nation,” Danny said. “We always look forward to this tournament because it’s a strong launching pad for the Tournament of Champions, which we competed at last year.” The Tournament of Champions is held at the University of Kentucky each year in April, but may be held online this year.
4th Annual Little Black Dress Initiative In early March, Junior League of San Diego’s 4th Annual Little Black Dress Initiative raised $5,795 and 10 bags of clothing to support foster youth. The donations are focused on youths transitioning out of the foster care system, helping them access resources to find jobs or further their education. The Little Black Dress Initiative is a social media-driven fundraising campaign. Junior League volunteers wore the same black dress from March 9 through 13 and shared the campaign on their social media channels, raising awareness about the local impact of poverty. Junior League of San Diego has raised more than $21,000 for local foster youth since 2017. “This is our fourth year of starting the conversation around this difficult topic, and I’m so proud of not only the statistical achievements of our efforts, but how far and wide the message has spread,” said Emily Green Lake, president of Junior League of San Diego. “With any initiative, the goal is to create a conversation around important issues and our team of volunteers has done a great job of bringing awareness to the poverty challenges in our community.” Learn more at www.jlsd.org.

alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 19 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self-confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions. “People come to California All-Stars for top-quality coaching and family atmosphere,” explained Tannaz. “Life lessons, core values, and athletic excellence come hand-in-hand. We love to see our kids succeed on and off the floor!” With a trained and energetic staff, spacious gym, and professional instruction, CAS has something for every budding cheerleader out there! Tryouts for new teams will be held May 13, 14, and 16, and students should preferably be there all three days. The tryout process determines team placement. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 16 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford and a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. aranatha Christian Schools’ Summer Programs are almost here! The construction of a new state-of-the-art Sports Complex is now complete, and some programs – Speed & Agility and Summer Games, for example – will utilize the new field. “In addition to the sport camps, we will have academic, cooking, art, and many more classes available for a well-rounded summer camp experience,” explained Director of Summer Enrichment Julie Elliott. “More importantly, our summer camps are open to the community.” Ages can range from kindergarten through 12th grade. Sport camps are taught by Maranatha’s very own varsity coaches. These coaches have led teams to multiple CIF Titles in several sports. Sport camps include Basketball Skills, Volleyball Skills, Mini Cheer, Strength & Conditioning/Speed & Agility, Sport, and Summer Games. Academic camps include English, S.T.E.A.M., and Math. Creative offerings include Cooking, Art, and Youth Summer Theatre Camp. “Most are three-week sessions,” Elliott said, “and if you sign up for both, the length of the camp could be six weeks for those looking for a long-term camp this summer.” Registration starts March 1 with some camps offering an early-bird special. Camps are offered from June 15 to July 31 and fill up fast. For ages three to six, the preschool division offers three one-week sessions that focus on Summer Olympics, Space, and S.T.E.A.M. Your child can take one week or all three in the summer school program that runs from June 8 to June 26. As one parent said, “My daughter has been attending this summer school program and has thoroughly enjoyed it. She has made a lot of friends and finds the teachers to be fun and engaging, as well as easy to learn from. She will be starting regular school next year and we have very high hopes.” Learn more at www.MaranathaChristianSchools.org. ¢

S
ummer camps at Studio West are back! These camps offer middle and high school-age students the opportunity to spend a week producing an original recording in the same studio that’s played host to artists such as Blink-182, Lil Wayne, and Arctic Monkeys, just to name a few. Musicians and non-musicians alike will find their role in the production process and gain experience with songwriting, arrangement, and performance, as well as audio engineering. Having access to three world-class recording rooms and individual workstations equipped with industryleading software like Logic Pro X, Ableton Live, and Pro Tools, students will be guided through every step of making a professional recording. By collaborating, students will have a unique opportunity to meet like-minded peers who love music as much as they do, and take home a recording at the end of the week. Studio West has been teaching music production for over 10 years. Programs span from middle school to industry professionals – from summer camps and numerous industry certifications all the way up to a year-long diploma program in audio engineering for those interested in a professional career. Competitive Edge
CVMS MATH LEAGUE SUCCEEDS IN COMPETITIONS
T
he Carmel Valley Middle School (CVMS) Math League is celebrating victories in several major competitions, including the American Mathematics Contest (AMC) 8, Fall Startup Event, and MATHCOUNTS San Diego. AMC 8 is a 40-minute, 25-question multiple choice examination, designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The CVMS team achieved a total score of 75 points, the result of three perfect scores by students Jacopo Rizzo, Edison Shen, and Ryan Bai, tying with five other schools for first place out of 1,869 nationwide. The Fall Startup Event is an individual competition in which each student tries to solve as many problems as they can within the time limit, with topics ranging from arithmetic to calculus. Jacopo Rizzo placed fourth, Edison Shen placed fifth, Elliott Liu was seventh, Nathan Han was 13th, Jack Shi and Angelina Zhou placed 17th, Larry Wu was 20th, Amrutha Challa was 21st, and Teddy Xu and Ryan Bai placed 24th nationwide. In addition to the national wins, the CVMS MATHCOUNTS team,

consisting of Edison Shen, Elliot Liu, Jacopo Rizzo, and Larry Wu, placed first at the San Diego Chapter Competition, held at UCSD in February. At the individual level, Edison placed first with the only perfect score in the county, Elliot placed second, individual competitor Ryan Bai placed third, and Jacopo placed seventh. In the fast-paced countdown round, Edison placed third and Larry placed fourth. The team, led by volunteer coach Snow Lee, expressed their gratitude to coaches and parents for the support they have received. Snow especially gives credit to former coach David Vaughn. “His math framework continues to lead us to many wins and success stories,” Snow said. “He has been generously providing lots of useful advice to us. I am just following in his footsteps.” She would also like to thank Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) founder Richard Rusczyk for regularly visiting the school, sharing inspiring stories and experiences for both parents and students, and contributing valuable AoPS math books to their library. ¢
