Memories That Last a Lifetime

ost people hold the memories of a few precious life experiences close to their heart. These are the memories that you are excited to tell your close friends and family about. They can be trips that you’ve taken, academic accomplishments, or even sporting events. Regardless of the specifics, these events are often remembered as if they were yesterday. I certainly have a handful of special memories that I am always eager to talk about. My youngest daughter recently experienced something that very few 12-year-old kids get to experience. She and her fellow softball teammates from the 4S Ranch 12U All-Stars went on a 13-game winning streak and became the California State Champions in their division. I still get choked up mentioning that title. It was an amazing thing to watch. Looking back, I realized that I was the exact same age when my Little League team went to the Texas state tournament. Although we didn’t become state champs, 32 years later I still have very fond memories of my experience at the tournament and the journey getting there. In fact, I’ve told the story countless times – just ask my sweet wife who has had to listen to it more times than I care to admit. And that brings me to my point. As these girls made the last out to win the state championship game on that hot and sunny day in Lancaster, the pure joy and emotions that followed were amazing to watch and absorb. There were tears of joy, lots of hugs, and plenty of celebrating that took place on the field. It was at that very moment that the magnitude of my daughter’s life experience became a reality. It was quite an emotional feeling for my wife and me when we realized that our daughter had just experienced a lasting life moment that she will carry with her and talk about for decades to come. I wish there was a way that we could select which life experiences we hold onto and carry with us for the rest of our lives. It would make things so much simpler. However, one thing that I have realized is that these life experiences tend to pick us – and not the other way around. Some people refer to them as a gift, and I definitely agree with that analogy. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to my sweet daughter and her talented teammates. I am very proud to be a part of your journey and life experiences. Your hard work, enthusiasm, and zest for life are a true blessing. Keep doing what you do!

ixteen-year-old Anne Liu was introduced to the piano at a very young age. “I think I was around two years old at the time,” she recalled, “fascinated by and curious of this black-and-white instrument and attracted to the crisp and satisfying sounds that it produced.” At the time, Anne didn’t know what she was listening to but only has a memory of being captivated by her older brother playing the piano. Shortly after, Anne started playing the piano and quickly picked up the skill. She is now an accomplished pianist, receiving numerous accolades and having performed extensively throughout the United States, China, and Italy. “I do have a favorite composer, and it’s Mozart,” shared Anne. “Listening to other renowned musicians inspires me and motivates me to work harder.” This past year, Anne was named the National YoungArts Foundation Finalist Winner – the highest honor for the selection. “YoungArts’ signature program is an application-based award for emerging artists ages 15 to 18 or in grades 10 to 12 from across the United States,” explained Anne. Selected through a blind adjudication process, YoungArts winners receive valuable support, professional development, and educational experiences working with mentors, and performance and exhibition opportunities at some of the nation’s leading cultural institutions.

In January, Anne traveled to Miami for National YoungArts Week, where she met with other finalists as well as renowned artists from around the nation. “I was really excited to get to work with the master teachers… and meeting with other artists and musicians,” recalled Anne. “To be able to work with so many talented young artists and prestigious musicians in Miami was truly an experience that I treasured. These musicians pass down their knowledge to us to prepare us for a future in the arts.” Anne was also recently awarded the Musical Merit Scholarship by the Musical Merit Foundation of Greater San Diego. “Winning the Musical Merit Scholarship grand prize was an incredible experience,” shared Anne. “Winning it required huge commitment and confidence. There were many great musicians in the competition and everybody did amazing.” Aside from her musical endeavors, Anne enjoys drawing and painting. She will be a junior at Canyon Crest Academy this fall, where her favorite subject in school is art history. “I like to know about the lives of the composers and the situations from that time period,” she shared. “They are the examples for young artists like me.” As for her future plans, Anne replied, “I plan on pursuing music professionally in music conservatories. I wish to become a concert pianist to share my love for music with others around the world.” 

he RB Chorale recently awarded its annual scholarships to six young musicians. The chorale, led by founder and director Pat Bean, offers scholarships to local high school graduates who are seeking to further their musical education in college. The scholarship fund relies on community donations, and the scholarship committee selects six finalists every spring. Those finalists have the opportunity to perform at the RB Chorale’s annual two-night summer showcase, Best of Broadway, where the audience votes on the final rankings for each night. The Saturday and Sunday first-place winners were awarded $4,200, second-place winners received $2,500, and third-place winners received $1,700. Violinist Erica Hwang won the first night. She graduated from Torrey Pines High School and will study violin performance and business at Stanford University. Second place went to Ellie Barret, a vocalist and graduate of San Marcos High School. She’s starting at Arizona State University this fall, after which she intends to be a professional entertainer. The third finalist on Saturday was Ryan Zhou, who performed on piano and also plays the viola. He graduated from Torrey Pines High School and will attend Yale University this fall. The second night of performances ended with Eduardo Pintado winning first place. Eduardo is a vocalist and graduate of Chula Vista Senior High School. He’s heading to University of California San Diego. Cameron Lincoln placed second for his piano performance; he graduated from Eastlake High School and will attend Stanford University. Third place was vocalist John Lettang, a Poway High School graduate who plans to study music performance and audio engineering at University of Colorado Boulder. LOCAL GOLD AWARD GIRLS SCOUTS HONORED

armel Valley residents Caroline Mackey, McKenna Pruett, Alice Shashkina, Navhaa Sinha, and Dora Tabachnick have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award – the organization’s highest honor – for demonstrating extraordinary leadership by identifying and tackling social issues. Each of the girls took on different topics for their Gold Award projects. Caroline wanted to inspire more girls to pursue science careers, so she created Scientists of Tomorrow, a 10-session elementary school program that included lessons such as “Detective for a Day,” where she and guest presenters led science experiments and sleuthing activities. McKenna partnered with a team of experienced surfers and lifeguards to develop an education program for the children of Tijuana’s Niños de la Promesa orphanage, teaching them to guard against the dangers that

accompany the fun and beauty of the ocean. Alice’s project focused on honoring and respecting the elderly by creating a club to perform musical recitals at retirement homes. She recruited peers to help lift the spirits of seniors through music, while addressing issues of senior isolation, neglect, and depression.

Navhaa created a smartphone app to help tennis players of any income level improve their game without the need for expensive private coaching, allowing users to film their play, isolate strokes for review, and instantly identify areas for improvement. After testing it on a sample population, the app has since been downloaded throughout the world. Dora identified a need for enhanced personal safety skills for females, so she created workshops in collaboration with her Tae Kwon Do studio, educating girls in grades 7 through 12 about how to defend themselves if they can’t avoid a dangerous situation. Each candidate spent one to two years developing and implementing their project, and were among 58 Gold Award winners honored during a recent ceremony at Copley Symphony Hall. armel Valley residents Trent and Trish Douglas know how special their neighborhood is. “The diversity that exists in our neighborhood is remarkable. There are several different cultures, nationalities, and traditions that are all around us,” said Trent. “It is a gift to be able to raise a family with so much accessible diversity.” Trent is a plastic surgeon who co-owns Restore SD Plastic Surgery, a private practice. He previously served 22 years in the Navy, treated wounded warriors, was deployed four times, and retired as a Navy Captain in 2017. He has visited Southeast Asia to provide humanitarian aid and reconstructive surgery. Trish worked as an ICU nurse for 30 years before recently retiring to focus her attention on their two children, Connor and Allie. She has run 10 marathons and has even summited Mt. Whitney. The pair met during Trent’s general surgery residency while he was doing a transplant rotation at Scripps Green Hospital. “We

were taking care of a mutual patient and hit it off right away,” related Trish. “We have been married for 15 years now.” They were married at the Vatican, and even met Pope John Paul II! Connor, age 14, is in ninth grade at Cathedral Catholic High School. An avid athlete, he has played baseball, basketball, and lacrosse, but his passion is soccer. He plays soccer for the DMCV Sharks on the 2004 Elite Clubs National League team and his goal is to play soccer in college. He also loves English, history, science, and geography. Allie, age 12, is in seventh grade at Pacific Trails Middle School. She is creative and artistic, and dances at GC Dance Company in Solana Beach where she competes at the elite level in lyrical, contemporary ballet, and jazz. She is also involved in Girl Scouts and the National Charity League with her mom. They are all avid skiers and love to travel. Trent and Connor enjoy fishing together, while Trish and Allie delight in baking and entertaining. Despite how busy life keeps the Douglases, the thing they cherish most is time together. “All four of us are reinvigorated by enjoying

downtime at home as a family. Relaxing as a family is a welcome change of pace from a busy surgical career, challenging school days, and the commitments required of elite athletes,” shared Trent. Whether it is reading a book, doing a project in the garage, or enjoying a coffee in the backyard, the Douglases enjoy doing it together. 

Creek to Bay Cleanup

I Love A Clean San Diego’s (ILACSD) 16th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup drew approximately 6,000 volunteers to 116 cleanup sites around San Diego County in the spring. Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve and Torrey Pines State Beach were among the cleanup sites this year. During the three-hour cleanup, volunteers across the county removed more than 175,000 pounds of trash and debris, helping to enhance the overall health and beauty of San Diego’s natural environment. Volunteers participated in beautification projects such as painting park structures, planting native trees and plants, mulching, and weeding. Participants also showcased their zero-waste commitments this year in the “Rocking Reusables” Sony Photo Contest. Local Author to Release New Books 92130 author Henry Herz will release three new children’s books this fall. SDRVC Welcomes New Board Members

acific Arts Dance Center (PADC) offers a wide variety of classes for dancers of all levels. From the auditiononly Ballet Academy and Competition Contemporary teams to lessons in many genres of dance including ballet, pointe, jazz, hip-hop, tap and musical theatre, PADC is dedicated to students who share a desire to grow in the art of dance. “We also offer classes in stretch and flexibility, turns and leaps and acro, as well as drop-in classes for adults in the mornings and evenings and on-going workshops in specialized genres such as Afro-Brazilian dance,” revealed Marie Arts, artistic director of PADC. According to Marie Arts, the last name she was born with

The timing for the merge of the two studios was perfect, as Merge Carmel Valley was just being developed into a mixed-use center. “Our facility is gorgeous and sunny! There are windows all around, and our largest studio has doors that completely open onto a spacious balcony,” said Marie. According to her, the physical beauty of the space is matched by the positive and welcoming environment at PADC. “Our goal is to provide exceptional ballet and dance training to all levels and ages of students. We foster creative thinking in a positive environment, and we want students to integrate their own artistry into the well-rounded dance training we provide. We want to create independent future artistic leaders,” Marie said. Dancers at PADC also have the opportunity to perform in annual productions, as well as in performances throughout the Carmel Valley, Del Mar and San Diego community. communities of Encinitas, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carmel Valley, Cardiff, Rancho Santa Fe, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. Various charitable funds allow the Foundation to award scholarships and grants that support everything from the arts and music, social services, and animals, to the environment,

Q&A with Coastal Community Foundation Executive Director Sharon Omahen

Please give us a brief history of the CCF. When was it started and why? Coastal Community Foundation was founded in 1987 by local leaders and community members that included Bill Dean, Anne Omsted, Margaret Schlesinger, and Liz Ferguson. These residents wanted a local community foundation that would keep resources here to benefit the community. For over 30 years, CCF has been supporting nonprofits, education, and community projects in the North Coastal area.

Which communities does the CCF serve? The Foundation primarily serves Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. In 2017, 62 percent of our grants supported San Diego nonprofits and nine percent of the grants funded scholarships for North Coastal high school graduates.

What is the overall mission of the CCF? The mission of Coastal Community Foundation is to enhance the quality of life in the San Diego North Coastal area by directing philanthropic efforts toward community needs. We fulfill our mission by: • Helping individuals and families with their charitable goals today and in the future • Making grants to support nonprofit programs, education, and community needs • Providing support and guidance to nonprofit organizations

Please explain how charitable funds and donations work. Who is eligible to establish or give to a fund? Each charitable fund tells a story about how residents want to make a difference in their community. One family may want to honor a loved one through a memorial or a scholarship fund, or residents may choose a donoradvised fund that provides them with the ability to support a wide variety of nonprofits over the years. It’s simple for anyone to establish a charitable fund with a minimum of $5,000. Determine what you want to donate (cash, stock, or other assets) and select the name of your fund. Then, you have the flexibility to invest in causes you care about most over time. The Foundation takes care of all the administrative details. Anyone can contribute at any level to an existing fund or make a gift to one of the giving circles (Solana Beach, Encinitas, or the women’s fund, Hand to Hand).

Solana Beach Fund grants support programs that any nonprofit provides for Solana Beach. Hand to Hand grants are available to nonprofits in San Diego County. Scholarships are available to students from

What are some examples of past projects the CCF has been involved with? The Foundation’s Ed Ventures program has granted over $250,000 for education programs over the past five years. In 2017, grants supported the Pathway programs at San Dieguito high schools for technical education,

including the purchase of professional culinary equipment for San Dieguito Academy’s culinary classes. In January, Hand to Hand, our women’s giving circle, granted $39,500 to nonprofits that help women in San Diego County who have been victims of trafficking and that support women and girls who have been released from prison. Over the past nine years, the fund has granted $274,258 for women’s and girls’ programs.

Mental Health grants have supported counseling for children who have witnessed domestic violence, counseling and mental health programs for children who are homeless, and grievance programs for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one.

How does the CCF support the Carmel Valley community speciﬁcally? Education grants in arts and science are made for elementary schools. In 2018, $19,350 was awarded to Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy for career education and training programs. In June, eight students from TPHS and CCA received scholarships. Recent grants have been made to San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy and the Del Mar School Education Foundation. Residents from Carmel Valley also contribute to a number of funds at CCF.

What is your role within the organization? Please elaborate on your speciﬁc responsibilities. As executive director, I oversee the administration of the Foundation, donor relations, and community outreach. I work closely with donors to help them establish their funds and fulfill their charitable goals.

Who is on the CCF leadership team? How are oﬃcers and board members chosen for their positions? The board leadership includes Alice Jacobson (President), Eric Hall (Vice President), John Kelting (Secretary), Sherry Mesman (Treasurer), and members Ed Blodgett, Marion Dodson, Nancy Giberson, Peter Iverson, Gabe Koff, Alex Kwoka, John Osborne, and John Runager. The board is chosen for their expertise in a wide variety of areas and commitment to building philanthropy for the community. The Foundation’s staff includes Program Officer Laura Fleming, who manages the grants and scholarship programs.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do? The most challenging? The most rewarding is helping donors make an impact for their favorite causes or nonprofits and seeing the results of those grants in the community. The most challenging is that there are so many worthwhile programs and limited grant funds.

What’s in store for the future of the Foundation?

The Foundation has scholarship committees that select award recipients, grant committees that

Why 30-Day Drug Treatment Isn’t Enough

esearch has shown that the chance for long-term success in recovery is exponentially higher in those who have managed to maintain a year of consistent sobriety versus that of individuals in their first days or months. This should come as no surprise when factoring in the physical aftermath of substance use as well as the behavioral and circumstantial change that can occur in a year, but the question still remains: how does one even begin to navigate the vital decisions made in the first year to create the best chance for successful long-term recovery? And beyond that, if the ﬁrst year of recovery is so important, then why is the standard length of drug and alcohol rehabilitation only 28 days? Unfortunately, the average success rate of rehabilitation programs across the country is dismal, with less than 20% of individuals who complete these programs maintaining any long-term sobriety. While insurance companies do cover some lengths of treatment, which vary from person to person, it is rare that insurance plans will cover lengths of treatment longer than 60 to 90 days in any meaningful capacity.

So what are our options when it comes to creating a solid foundation in sobriety after initial treatment is completed? The answer is simple: aftercare. BGCSD FOUNDATION PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIPS TO LOCAL STUDENTS

he Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito (BGCSD) Foundation awarded The Leonard & Edith Polster and James & Patricia Townsend Scholarships, totaling $52,000, to 20 local teens during a special ceremony held at the Hilton Del Mar. Scholarship recipients included San Dieguito Academy students Kalo Grimsby, Brooke Sagun, Kara Sagun, and Valerie Zerfas; La Costa Canyon High School students Cindy Donoe-Alcaide, Luis Elias, Brandon Lopez, and Abraham Perez; Torrey Pines High School students Keila De La O, Samantha Rangel-Lopez, and Jose Becerra; and Oceanside’s El Camino High School students Nicole Durham, Jana Lapid, Rebeca Lopez, Anna Maddison, Brionna Martinez, Ivette Martinez, Saul Molano, Gabriela Osio, and Lorena Urquidez Campos. The Leonard & Edith Polster Scholarship, established by

the Polsters in 1986, focuses on financial need and potential for success through scholarships to community colleges, state colleges, universities, or trade schools. To date, over 600 students in the San Dieguito, Carlsbad, and Oceanside school districts have received financial support totaling over $750,000 from the Polster Foundation. The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito consists of seven clubhouses in Solana Beach, Del Mar, Encinitas, and Carmel Valley serving youth ages 18 months through 18 years. It is well-known in the oral health field that untreated cavities and eventual dental infection can be a breeding ground for bacteria, which can spread to other body sites, especially in patients suffering from weak immune systems stemming from chronic disease, autoimmune disease, malignancies, or diabetes – and, of course, even patients with a healthy immune system are at risk. The concept of bacteremia is also well studied; bacteremia is the presence of live bacteria in the bloodstream. Bacteremia could occur after an oral surgical procedure, dental extraction, dental cleaning, gum surgery, or due to an ongoing chronic or progressing acute oral infection. Dissemination of oral bacteria could occur in as short as one minute follow-

ing an oral surgical procedure and reach main organ systems. However, our complex immune system is constantly protecting us from this. An oral cavity is a unique site as it is not considered sterile at any time; therefore, any bacteria breaking through the mucosal barrier or other anatomical barriers can cause bacteremia. Reported cases of dental infection seeding into the brain, heart, or backbone are not unheard of and all of these reported “extreme” cases have been experienced by myself and by other practitioners at some point in their career. However, dental infections more commonly affect the neck, face, and jaw. This becomes apparent with facial swelling or a swelling extending into the neck, below the jaw line, or with a similar variation. If the acute infection is not dealt with, then the swelling will affect swallowing and later breathing. Recovering from these kinds of infections creates a physiological and cost burden to the patient, not to mention these diseases are potentially life-threatening.

Therefore, it would be fair to summarize that simply, prevention is the key in any health matter in this century. It is a preventive practice to get checked by your dentist in a regular recall system for series of surveillance dental radiographic imaging, dental exams, and dental cleanings; this way a progressive chronic infection in the jaw bone can be identified, even if it is not showing any obvious signs. Once identified, the patient can be treated with a root canal or the extraction of the tooth. In 20th century and before, populations generally suffered from mostly infectious and communicable disease. However, after the invention of antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and the preventive understanding of infection control standards, the trend of diseases tipped more towards chronic and autoimmune diseases, at least in the western world. Although we have come a long way, we can do better in the dental field to prevent dental infections – this starts with patients’ regular dental care with their trusted dentist via a recall system, cleanings, periodic exams, and radiographic images so potential problems can be caught earlier. 

RECORDING ARTS STARS Diploma Program at Studio West Sees Alumni Shine

tudio West has been recording some of the biggest names in the music, TV, and film industry since it opened the doors in Rancho Bernardo in 1986. In 2004, they started oﬀering educational programs for industry professionals and hobbyists and in 2011 launched a full-time, 12-month Diploma in Recording Arts. Now the program has been established for well over five years, and many of the graduates have gone on to find success in the industry at studios and production facilities all over the USA. Here is a brief snapshot of some of the Diploma Program’s most successful alumni.

ALEX GEHRING Alex (’16) immediately began working at SIR Studios in New York City as a resident engineer working with both audio and backline. He’s had the opportunity to work behind the board for many established and up-andcoming artists in Manhattan and runs live sound at some of the coolest clubs in the city, such as BlueNote and Subrosa.

SAM McCORMICK Sam (’16) interned at Hans Zimmer Studios (Remote Control Productions), where he was quickly hired to assist with music for numerous television pilots. In January of 2017, Sam began working as a sound designer and sample editor at Amper Music, a new software company that helps people create unique, royalty-free soundtracks.

JACOB POWELL Jacob (’16) interned at Studio West and at the La Jolla Music Society Summer Fest before landing a job as an audio engineer at SIR Studios in New York City, where he works alongside his classmate and friend Alex Gehring.

SHELBY MEDDOCK Shelby (’13) found success with the Reggae band The Movement. Their album Side by Side, which Shelby tracked and mixed, debuted at #1 on iTunes’ Reggae charts and #2 on Billboard’s. She is now the audio engineer at The Compound Studios, and has produced five albums.

ORI RENDLER Ori (’14) is a location sound mixer for television and film. Some of his clients include ESPN, NBC, E!, Discovery, National Geographic, VICE, CMT, TLC, and more.

JONAH LEVINE AND BRIAN KEIM

Jonah and Brian (’14) are co-founders of Analog Media Productions, a digital media company based out of San Diego and Los Angeles. Their focus on video production reﬂects the importance of visual images in the way we consume media.

STEVEN GROOT Steven (’16) became a sound mixer and editor at Turning Point, a non-profit Christian organization in Lakeside. Though the job required five years’ experience, thanks to his Diploma Program knowledge, he was oﬀered the full-time position of sound mixer/editor. Steven works collaboratively with members of the television, radio, and digital media teams to provide audio mixes.

2130’s Cathedral Catholic High School (CCHS) recently welcomed Colette Reid as the new head coach for the girls’ water polo team. Carlsbad resident Colette Reid has been the head varsity swim coach and a college counselor at CCHS and is excited to be involved with the water polo team as well. She is taking over for Jaclyn Puccino, who recently accepted an assistant coach position at Harvard University. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as the head coach of the girls’ water polo program at Cathedral Catholic High School,” Colette said. “I look forward to the challenge of continuing the winning tradition established by Jackie during her time as head coach.” Colette currently coaches at the Carlsbad Water Polo Club and

the Olympic Development Program San Diego Cadet Team. She was an assistant varsity water polo coach at Carlsbad High School last year and was on the Sonoma State University water polo team as a student. As coach for the varsity boys’ swim team at CCHS, Colette was named Coach of the Year for the 2017-2018 season. Athletic Director Dave Smola added, “She is an excellent coach and counselor.
