Creating Lasting Memories

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux

M

y wife and I have been blessed with extended families that are very involved in our lives. Being a transplant from Texas (where most of my family still lives), I can appreciate that my wife is a rare third generation San Diegan. She is lucky to have most of her family close by. While we try to spend as much time as possible with both sides of the family, sometimes it gets a little difficult to get everyone together at the same time due to busy schedules and locations. Spending time with the family creates lasting memories. Six years ago, shortly after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather decided to start a tradition of an annual family reunion trip. So each summer, my wife and I take our kids to a lake house outside of Austin, TX for the annual Breaux Family Reunion. For a week, we get to visit and catch up with multiple generations of Breauxs. Our kids hang with their cousins, and the older generation can reminisce about the good ol’ days. It’s been an awesome family tradition that my late grandfather started and left to the family for years to come. My aunt, uncles, and dad are carrying on the annual tradition. And continuing with the creating memories theme, this year my wife’s family surprised everyone with a family trip (thank you T & D). We were able to spend a week with my wife’s parents and her brother and sister’s families. As we cruised through the blue Caribbean waters and various ports of call, we all had a blast visiting and spending time together. The entire experience – the six months leading up to the vacation and the vacation itself – was amazing. Our kids and their cousins ruled the ship (or at least they thought), and all of us adults acted like kids again – even my wife’s parents! There was no shortage of laughs and memorable moments, nor is there a shortage of great photos. I guarantee that we will all be talking about this for years to come. Since these vacations have had such a positive impact on us, I wanted to take a moment to make sure that our families know how much we appreciate spending time with them (yes, some of them actually read this magazine!). Thank you to my late grandparents. Thank you to my dad. Thank you to my aunts and uncles for continuing the traditions, and thank you to my in-laws for putting together a fantastic trip. We love you guys! And thank YOU for being a reader of 92130 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. Learning Problems Don’t Have to be Permanent There are Real and Lasting Solutions

Having a learning challenge can be compared to doing a job at the top of a ladder, whose lower rungs are unstable. Working in this way makes the job harder, and take longer to complete. By strengthening the lower rungs, or underlying skills, learning challenges can be eliminated, and work done at the top of the ladder can improve, with increased attention, focus, confidence and success!

After working with TLC, our daughter does all her homework without prompting, needs very little help, and her grades are all A’s and B+. She seems happy and confident. Her work with TLC has been invaluable, and we are very thankful!” -TLC parent

“All of the staff is amazing-- caring, patient, & positive. My son's clinician challenged him without pushing him to frustration. A worthwhile investment in my child's future!” -TLC parent “TLC is nothing short of a miracle. I will admit I was initially hesitant. It is not cheap, and the promises of academic progress seem too good to be true. However, I am not being dramatic when I say it was worth every penny and it changed my son's academic life forever.” - TLC parent

WESLEY ZHANG HEADS TO SOUTH KOREA TO COMPETE IN INTERNATIONAL LINGUISTICS OLYMPIAD

T

o say that Canyon Crest Academy senior Wesley Zhang is an academic standout is an understatement. He recently earned a spot on Team USA to compete in the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) in South Korea. The IOL is a competition in which teams of young linguists from around the world gather to compete in solving linguistic puzzles using logic skills. “In order to qualify for Team USA in the IOL, students first participate in the North America Computational Linguistics Olympiad. There are two rounds in this competition, the first being the Open Round. Those that score high enough in the Open Round then compete in the Invitational Round. The top eight scorers in the Invitational Round comprise the two teams that the USA sends to the IOL,” explained Wesley, who also competed in the IOL two years ago when the event was held in Dublin, Ireland. While Wesley is looking forward to the IOL competition itself, he is also eager to meet the other participants, as well as visit sites close to the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. “This plays to my interest in history,” he said. According to him, it may surprise people how interested he is in history since most of his other interests revolve around science and mathematics. However, Wesley is dedicated to learning as much as possible about the subject of history. In addition to competing in the IOL, Wesley is involved in other competitive math and science teams, such as USA Mathematics Olympiad, USA Biology Olympiad, USA Physics Olympiad, and USA Computing Olympiad. He also participates in trivia competitions, including the San Diego County Academic League, Quiz Bowl, National History Bee and Bowl, and the International Geography Bee. When he is not participating in academic competitions, Wesley enjoys solving logic puzzles, listening to classical music, programming, tutoring other students, and volunteering at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. In the future, Wesley hopes to pursue an interdisciplinary career that involves all of his interests. “Cognitive science, for one, is a field I’ve taken an interest in,” he shared, “due to its involvement with linguistics, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence.” 

Man of the Year

LOCAL NAMED TOP FUNDRAISER FOR LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

C

armel Valley’s Gordon Cooke and Little Italy’s Katy Temple were named the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) San Diego chapter’s 2019 Man and Woman of the Year, respectively. Gordon and Katy, along with six other candidates, raised approximately $550,000 during the 10-week fundraising campaign to support LLS’s goal to find cures for blood cancers and ensure that patients have access to lifesaving treatments. Candidates and their campaign teams were judged solely on fundraising success, each dollar counting as one vote. Gordon quickly became familiar with LLS after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018. He is currently undergoing aggressive treatment, but has chosen to dedicate his time and efforts to LLS,

along with his team Gordo’s Groupies. “These exceptional volunteers are all passionate and determined individuals, and leaders in their communities,” said Kathlene Seymour, LLS San Diego Executive Director. “Together, we are getting closer to LLS’s goal of a world without blood cancer.” Founded in 1949, LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. Through programs like Man & Woman of the Year, LLS has invested more than $1.3 billion in research to advance breakthrough therapies. In 2017 and 2018 alone, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved 39 therapies to treat patients with blood cancers, including some new agents and some new uses for already approved drugs. LLS helped fund 34 of the 39 therapies. To learn more about LLS and how to get involved go to www.lls.org. 

DISCUSSION-BASED LEARNING IN MIDDLE SCHOOL

M

iddle school is a time of both challenge and opportunity. Students face increasing social distractions and often larger classes, making it easier for them to “check out.” Yet, developmentally, adolescents are primed for intellectual growth. One of the best ways to keep middle school students learning is through active discussion. At Pacific Ridge School, they use Harkness, a teaching method in which an average of 15 students sit with their teacher around an oval table and coursework is collaboratively discussed. SOME BENEFITS ARE: Engagement: Harkness is studentcentered. Rather than passively receiving information, students participate in obtaining, sharing, and evaluating it. Everyone has a seat at the table – students have a voice and their peers listen.

Skill building: Harkness helps students develop a cache of important skills, such as critical thinking, fact-based observation, effective speaking, respectful listening, collaboration, and an appreciation for differing perspectives. Confidence: Adolescents want their opinion to matter, and are pleasantly surprised when it does. Students take intellectual risks in Harkness, gaining confidence interacting with peers and adults alike.

While proficiency with Harkness generally comes in the high school years, regular practice is both stimulating and invaluable for middle schoolers, resulting in young adults who are self-reliant and articulate, engaged in collaborative problem solving, and who value divergent viewpoints. The earlier students develop these skills, the more engaged in their education they will become. For information about Harkness at Pacific Ridge or to register for their Nov. 16 Open House, visit pacificridge.org/OpenHouse. 

Serving Seniors

EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME GALA RAISES $435,000 photo by Jennifer Nelson Photography

A

pproximately 370 guests attended Serving Seniors’ sixth annual Experience of a Lifetime Gala at the Del Mar Country Club. The “Stories for the Ages”-themed event featured a cocktail reception, gourmet dinner, live and silent auctions, and a popular wine grab, raising $435,000 to support the organization’s programs and services. “The San Diego community once again came together to not only raise critical funds, but also to shine a bright light on vulnerable seniors and the daily struggles they face,” said Serving Seniors President and CEO Paul Downey. “We are honored to continue to do the good work of this organization by touching more lives and providing more nutritious meals to the thousands of San Diego seniors in need.” Serving Seniors is a nonprofit agency dedicated to helping seniors in poverty live healthy and fulfilling lives through comprehensive

wraparound services including nutritious meals, affordable and transitional housing, supportive social services, healthcare, and enrichment. This innovative approach has earned national recognition for helping seniors remain healthy and independent, and Serving Seniors is the only organization in San Diego County – and one of the few in the United States – that provides such a broad base of vital services to vulnerable older adults. Nearly 5,000 low-income seniors rely on the organization’s services every year. Since its inception in 1970, Serving Seniors has served over 12 million meals, serving 2,600 meals a day at 10 congregate dining sites and via home delivery to homebound seniors across San Diego County. or 20 years, The Super Dentists’ Co-founders Dr. Kami Hoss and Dr. Nazli Keri have been transforming the dental experience for children with original movies, music, costumes, and fun superhero and villain characters. Now parents can have an equally enjoyable dental experience at The Super Dentists with their Parent Dentistry program. According to the American Dental Association, it is estimated that nearly 75% of adults in the United States experience some amount of fear with regards to visiting a dentist. Of those, roughly 5-10% have a strong enough fear to be considered sufferers of a dental phobia. But The Super Dentists have changed everything adults hate about going to the dentist. “We’ve created an extraordinary experience that’s anything but your ordinary adult dentistry,” said Dr. Kami Hoss, DDS, MS. “We have VIP (Very Important Parent) lounges and employ advanced technology and adult amenities to provide top-quality dental care along with an out-ofthis-world experience for grown-ups.” VIPs are welcome to relax in the adult lounge area prior to their appointment, where they can enjoy a latte with a personalized message in the foam, surf the web, or enjoy quiet time. The office features luxurious amenities to make the visit as stress-free as possible – aromatherapy, warm towels, massage chairs, and virtual reality masks. With the highest quality dentists who are experts in their field utilizing the latest, most innovative state-of-the-art dental technologies, adults have nothing to fear at The Super Dentists.

Hate needles? They have computerized anesthesia. Gag on those awful impressions? They have digital scanners. Worried about glowing in the dark when you have x-rays taken? They use low-to-no radiation cavity detection. Can’t stand the taste of rubber gloves? They have flavored gloves in strawberry, bubble gum, and grape. TVs on the ceiling and “Digital Nitrous” virtual reality goggles are an easy distraction while dental work is being done. Parents are offered complimentary childcare services and can even receive a phone and a GPS watch for their children, so they can be in communication during their appointment. Parent Dentistry services include dental hygiene, cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening, braces and orthodontics, Acceledontics™, sedation dentistry, veneers, and TMJ treatment. Parent Dentistry is available at The Super Dentists Carmel Valley, Eastlake, and Kearny Mesa locations, and will also be available at the newest Super Dentists location in Escondido (opening Fall 2019). C San Diego Health’s brand-new medical clinic is a one-stop shop for residents of Encinitas and surrounding communities. The new location, which opened in June, offers world-class care to patients of all ages in one convenient location. Infants, children, and teenagers receive compassionate care from pediatricians through all their developmental stages in a supportive, family-friendly environment. “A new patient to my practice can expect to collaborate with me on the health of their child,” said pediatrician Dr. Robert Coles. “I want parents to be involved, to ask questions, and for us to walk through the process together.” Services offered include prenatal consultations, newborn care, well-baby and well-child visits, and coordination with pediatric specialists if needed. Family medicine at UC San Diego Health offers providers who can care for the entire family, including children, adults,

and seniors. With a model of care that is based on building personal relationships and putting patients first, physicians emphasize communication, shared decision-making, and accessibility. “Family doctors take care of the whole patient, not just the medical and clinical aspect of their lives,” said primary care physician and Encinitas medical director Dr. Yewah Jung. “I like to ask my patients how their day was and how their family is, because those are often very important factors in a patient’s health.” Choosing UC San Diego Health for primary care also means that patients have access to an entire network of advanced specialty care, including the state-of-the-art Jacobs Medical Center hospital in La Jolla and various specialty services in nearby offices. For common health care needs such as coughs or ear infections, as well as wellness visits for certain kinds of

And with the Save My Spot feature, patients can check wait times online and save their spot in line so they spend less time at the clinic. UC San Diego Health is an integral part of the local community as a member of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and the North San Diego Business Chamber. All physicians and nurse practitioners are board certified and focused on the importance of accessible, personalized care. “I believe the patient and the doctor are part of a team,” said Dr. Jung. “My job is primarily to listen and figure out the tools to empower my patients to make healthy changes in their lives.” 

op-notch medical care is key to keeping our families healthy and happy – and that goes for our four-legged family members too. That’s why San Diego native Dr. Laura Greenlee Johnson grew up dreaming of becoming a small animal veterinarian. She’s worked with both human and animal patients over the course of her education and career. After graduating from University of California San Diego’s Muir College, Laura worked for several years as part of a team conducting cardiovascular health research in children through early school intervention programs, while also completing a master’s degree in exercise physiology. At 28 years of age, Laura decided it was time to follow her childhood dreams and ventured off to the Caribbean to the island of St. Kitts in order to attend Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. She thrived there and even earned the seventh-semester achievement award for her class, which is given to the top student at the end of their final semester of the pre-clinical portion of studies in St. Kitts before heading off to the full clinical year at another U.S. veterinary school. Laura attended Washington State University for her senior clinical year of veterinary school and embraced the change of living in and exploring Washington, Oregon, and Idaho during this fast-paced and intensive portion of her veterinary education. Dr. Greenlee, as she was known by for the next 14 years while working at All Creatures Hospital, Inc. in Del Mar as an associate veterinarian, married her husband Brian Johnson, a longtime Fairbanks Ranch resident, in 2010 in Rancho Santa Fe. They started a family, which now consists of three boys: Nate (8) and Luke and Blake (4-year-old twins). In 2018, Laura decided it was time to follow her next dream and embarked on the journey to establish her own veterinary clinic. After 16 years of practicing, Laura had established a vision of what she felt an ideal veterinary clinic would be like. She’s worked hard to bring that vision to life at Santaluz Animal Care (SAC). SAC provides general practice veterinary medicine, dentistry, and soft tissue surgery (including spays, neuters, mass removals, and other basic procedures), and orthopedic and specialty surgeries can be scheduled at SAC with a mobile board-certified surgeon. The practice specializes in the care of dogs, cats, and some exotics including rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, and reptiles. SAC treats sick pets and handles veterinary emergencies, as well as focusing on preventative medicine and wellness visits. The office offers a variety of prescription dietary options and medicines onsite and through their competitively-priced online pharmacy. In addition to these traditional services, SAC also offers complementary therapies (alternative medicine), including acupuncture, Chinese veterinary medicine, cold laser therapy, and regenerative medicine. Dr. Johnson and her highly trained staff also use diagnostic tools that are progressive and unique, such as digital thermal imaging, stance analysis, abdominal ultrasound, and digital radiography, as well as digital dental radiography. “The breadth of our offerings, as well as the Fear Free approach to our patients and true quality customer

service, is what sets us apart and goes above and beyond the standard veterinary practice experience,” explained Dr. Johnson. Laura’s team members flocked to join her clinic’s staff upon reading about the clinic’s vision in the job descriptions. They are now a cohesive unit, and the clinic’s dream is now their dream job too. “We can’t wait to show you and your furry family members around our Fear Free-inspired, sPAW-like, gorgeous veterinary clinic,” shared Laura. “Oh – and I almost forgot – we also offer full-service pet grooming on site!”  August | September 2019 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • 29

A Healthy Family Starts With a Doctor You Can Trust

M

anaging your family’s health care is not usually top of mind until a loved one is sick or you’ve had a life change. Choosing the right care can be overwhelming and confusing, but selecting a primary care doctor ahead of time helps ensure the best care for your family when the need arises. A primary care doctor coordinates your family’s routine and specialty care. Finding the right doctor will depend on your unique needs. If you haven’t given much thought to this important decision, here’s a good place to start: Decide which type of primary care doctor you want. There are four types of primary care doctors: • Pediatricians care for children and adolescents. • Family medicine doctors treat the whole family, from infants to older adults. • Internal medicine doctors treat adults age 18 and up. • Internal medicine/pediatric doctors are board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, and treat people of all ages.

Think about your personal preferences. • Are you more comfortable with a male or female doctor? • Do you want your doctor’s office close to your home or work? • Do you need a doctor who speaks a language other than English? • Which hospitals does the doctor admit to?

Consider convenience. Many North County families that have busy schedules look for a doctor who offers a wide variety of ways to access care. These can include: • Video and phone appointments. • The convenience of a medical center where many services, such as pharmacy, lab, radiology, and urgent care, are all under one roof. • Same-day appointments. • After-hours pediatric care for when the kids are sick. • The ability to securely manage your and your family’s health care online by messaging your doctor’s office, making appointments, viewing lab results, and more. Confirm your insurance coverage. When you find the ideal doctor, you’ll need to verify if they are in your health plan network. Call the number listed on your insurance card to confirm, and let your insurance carrier know you’ve selected that person as your new primary care doctor. Sharp Rees-Stealy can help you navigate your options and make it easy to find a doctor. Plus, they accept almost all health insurance plans. Select your doctor at sharp.com/srsdoctor or by calling 858-264-2539. 

Cathedral Catholic High School Continues a Strong Legacy of Faith, Character, and Achievement by LAINEY KRAL | photos provided by Cathedral Catholic High School

C

athedral Catholic High School’s (CCHS) core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility have guided the development of high-achieving, well-rounded leaders for over 60 years. The CCHS legacy has deep roots, though the name is only 12 years old. Cathedral Girls High School merged with University San Diego High School (UNI) in 1970 on UNI’s Linda Vista Campus. UNI transitioned to the current CCHS Campus in Carmel Valley in 2005 and took on the new name of Cathedral Catholic High School. “No matter what campus you were on, once you become a Don, you’re always a Don,” said CCHS President Mr. Stevan Laaperi. “The Dons’ legacy has never been stronger. Over 50 alumni are among the CCHS team of administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff.” The professional staff is well qualified to uphold that legacy. Most teachers have a master’s degree or higher in the subject they teach, and the entire staff strives to model the values of a Catholic faith community. The school is accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and holds membership with the College Board. “In partnership with parents,

we form an educational ministry that is mutually supportive and a community committed to excellence,” said Principal Dr. Kevin Calkins. “It is our intent that our graduates carry a spirit of intellectual curiosity and a love of learning on their continuing journey of personal and spiritual growth.” Over 1,600 students are currently beginning that journey on the dynamic CCHS campus. Facilities include 75 classrooms, 12 science labs, two computer labs, a robotics lab, a ceramics studio, a music room, a lecture hall, several special-use classrooms, worldclass athletic facilities, a library, a lecture hall, a chapel and meditation garden – there’s a place for every student to discover their passion. Over 70 percent of CCHS students participate in one or more of the school’s 80-plus teams. “Whether you are an athlete, love to act, or have a passion for serving others, at Cathedral Catholic you gain the confidence to make a difference not only in your life but in the world around you,” said Kate, a graduate from the Class of 2017. Nicole, another recent graduate, agreed: “There is an unparalleled wealth of opportunities, and a strong support system in the students and faculty as part of the Catholic community.” 

“It is our intent that our graduates carry a spirit of intellectual curiosity and a love of learning on their continuing journey of personal and spiritual growth.” At-A-Glance Name of School: Cathedral Catholic High School President: Mr. Stevan Laaperi Principal: Dr. Kevin Calkins Year of Establishment: University of San Diego High School established in 1957, moved to new location as Cathedral Catholic High School in 2005 Address: 5555 Del Mar Heights Rd. SADDLE UP IN SAN DIEGO Take to the Trails and Make New Equine Friends This Summer by LAINEY KRAL

T

here’s nothing quite like leaning back in the saddle or petting a velvety nose while the blue summer sky stretches above you. San Diego is home to a vibrant, varied equine community. Whether you’re the parent of an enthusiastic future cowgirl, a grown-up barn kid who hasn’t ridden in years, or just plain curious, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and experience something new. Besides lessons and summer camps, guided trail rides are a great opportunity for new riders or those just getting back in the saddle. Options include giddying up through the hills of Poway, riding through the surf on a beach ride, and wine tasting adventures in Temecula. Many facilities offer both public and private rides – especially for larger groups, it’s smart to call ahead to confirm availability. Be sure to check the weather policy too, in case of cancellations. If getting in the saddle isn’t your style, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the world of horses from the ground. The Del Mar Racetrack may be San Diego’s most famous equine destination, but don’t miss the hunter, jumper, and equitation events at nearby Showpark of San Diego. The 2019 Poway Rodeo is also coming up on Sept. 27 and 28, showcasing Western disciplines like barrel racing and roping. San Diego even has a thriving polo scene – check out organizations like Lakeside Polo Club, Poway Polo Club, or San Diego Polo Club for beginner lessons or upcoming events to watch. You can also combine a love of horses with a love of making a difference. The San Diego area has a number of therapeutic riding centers and equine rescues that are often open to volunteers and support. Whatever your interests and wherever you go, whether you’re sitting astride a thoroughbred or a pony, remember to pause for a bit and just enjoy the moment. Have a good ride! 

STABLE SAFETY • Wear closed-toe shoes, and strap on your helmet before getting in the saddle. • When meeting an unfamiliar horse, always ask its owner whether it’s okay to pet it, feed treats, or take photos. • Walk, don’t run! Sudden movements and loud noises can make horses nervous. • Pay attention to facility rules and listen to your instructor – every barn and every horse is unique!
