y kids and I were in the car the other day chatting about random things. The topic turned to the holidays and their time off of school. It was a typical fall day here in San Diego. We were dressed for the occasion sporting shorts, flip flops, and sunglasses. I glanced at the dash and pointed out that the display showed 84 degrees. It was taunting us to take the boat out. I reminded the pack that we were merely days away from the holidays, and you’re not supposed to go wakeboarding this time of the year. This rationale was definitely met with a bit of teenage resistance. My daughter, to support her argument to hit the water, insisted that it didn’t feel like it was almost Christmas. In fact, she was trying to convince us that it seemed more like a hot summer day. And she was right, but we still didn’t go boating. We are spoiled here in Southern California – especially when it comes to the weather. I explained to my born-and-raised-in-Southern-California kiddos that Christmas feels a little different here than it does in other parts of the country. Although I didn’t grow up shoveling my way out of the house on Christmas morning, I do remember bone-chilling cold fronts and having four distinct seasons. I remember our tradition of heading over to our grandparent’s house bundled up in big coats. The holidays meant it was cold. And people went outside as little as possible. Shorts and sandals had long been packed away. Although my kids have never experienced that type of holiday weather, they do experience the long-standing Southern family traditions that we have kept alive. Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or any of the other holidays that we celebrate, everyone in the family knows where we are going to be and who will be there. They look forward to it, and they expect it. It’s our family Derrick Breaux tradition. And although we may pack swimsuits and sunscreen Publisher instead of bulky coats, I wouldn’t change a thing – nor would they. Traditions are important to my wife and me, and having everyone together simply warms our hearts. To all of our friends and family close and far, may your holidays and New Year be filled with love, health, and happiness.

All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

T

en years ago, Kelly and Douglas Lee moved to the Carmel Valley neighborhood of Pacific Highlands Ranch and immediately felt right at home. “We relocated here when I got a job at the University of California San Diego. We have seen this family-friendly community grow and mature over the years. Living in a community where education, culture, and social engagement are valued is important to us,” revealed Kelly. Douglas, Kelly, and their eightyear-old son Travis love their proximity to great schools, parks, beaches, dining, and shopping. Kelly and Douglas also feel strongly about serving the local San Diego community they cherish. Douglas is a dentist and owns Radiant Smiles, a practice in 4S Ranch. He is proud to provide quality dental care to members of the community. As a board-certified psychiatric pharmacist and professor and associate dean at the UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kelly sees patients in the adult ADHD clinic. She also volunteers her time advocating for patients with mental illness through several local organizations, including the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council. Kelly and Douglas met in San Francisco where, according to Kelly, they were set up on a blind date. They fell in love quickly and were married within a year. Both Kelly and Douglas were born in South Korea and grew up in the United States as immigrants. “While we have lived in the U.S. most of our lives, we try to instill the traditions and values of our culture in Travis,” related Kelly. Traveling and learning about other regions is also extremely important to the Lees. They take one big family trip each year in addition to several weekend outings. The Lees count Hawaii, Chicago, Park City, and Portland among their favorite destinations. Playing tennis as a family is another beloved pastime of the Lee family. “Douglas and I both played tennis in high school and hope to pass on the love of the sport to Travis,” stated Kelly. So far they have succeeded in this endeavor as Travis currently plays tennis at the Bay Club. Travis, who is in second grade at Solana Ranch Elementary School, also enjoys ice skating, reading, writing, and building Legos. He recently added playing electric guitar into the mix. “He is involved in the Rock Star music program and had the opportunity to perform at the House of Blues,” said Kelly proudly. 

Save money on tutoring! Real and permanent solutions are available. Save money on life-long tutoring. Save time on after school Intervention programs. Learning problems are caused when a child’s underlying processes are not working as efficiently as they could.

This can be changed. Reading, Writing and Math If your child is having difficulty with reading/writing or math, it may be because the underlying processes needed are not yet developed. With specific training in these processes, your child can become an independent and confident learner.

Is this your child? • Has difficulty learning to decode? • Has slow and laborious reading skills? • Finds the common core math difficult because it requires so much reading? • Has difficulty showing comprehension in WRITING? • Has messy handwriting? • Requires ongoing tutoring to become successful?

any children today take their lifestyle for granted. Not Bella Silberstein. For the past two years on her birthday, Bella has asked her friends and family to make a monetary donation to a girls’ orphanage in lieu of gifts. “I have a very blessed life,” Bella observed, “and the part that really hurts inside is that I know every night when mom and dad come into my room and say a prayer for me and kiss me on the forehead, I know that the girls in the orphanage don’t have that.” Bella, age 12, has chosen the orphanage Lev LaLev as the recipient of these donations. For the past 55 years, the orphanage, which is located in Netanya, Israel, has been offering many services for disadvantaged and orphaned girls. Besides meeting basic food and shelter needs, Lev LaLev also provides girls therapy, mentoring, and tutoring, and will also support the girls’ life cycle events, including Bat Mitzvahs, graduations, and weddings. “The girls in Lev LaLev have inspired me to be a better person because they have gone through so many challenges in their lives,” related Bella. In the past few years, she has raised over $3,000 for Lev LaLev. Some of this money has come through donations from family and Name: Bella Silberstein (12) friends, but Bella also holds mini School: San Diego Jewish Academy fundraisers throughout the year to Grade: 7 raise additional funds, including Parents: Heidi and Russell Silberstein selling handmade bracelets, Rosh Siblings: Maya (14) and Jack (9) Hashanah cards, and Purim masks. Favorite A Carmel Valley native, Bella Local attends the San Diego Jewish Spots: UTC, Del Mar Highlands Academy and is currently in seventh grade. She is involved in The Lions Ambassadors at school. “We are the representatives of our school and serve a very special role in welcoming new students, participating in school wide events, and showing potential new students around our campus,” Bella explained. Outside of school, she holds a position on her Jr. USY Board (USY is her synagogue’s youth program). She plays volleyball with her friends at school, loves to bake with her grandmother, and enjoys helping her mother prepare for Friday Shabbat dinner. As for future plans, Bella has no career in mind yet, but is certain that it will involve working with people and making a difference in the world. While she feels a little shy about getting attention for her work with Lev LaLev, she agrees with her mom, who thinks it’s important for young kids to know that they too can make difference. Wherever life leads Bella, she is already making a major impact in the world! 

IS WISDOM TOOTH SURGERY NECESSARY? by Tarkan Sidal, DDS, MD

S

urgical management of impacted third molars (wisdom teeth) is a common treatment frequently offered in oral and maxillofacial surgery offices. Despite how common the treatment is, removing wisdom teeth is not without controversy – some critics would argue that in the absence of disease or symptoms, patients would be subjected to pain, risk, and unfavorable economic outcome. However, strong peer reviewed research shows that retained wisdom teeth may involve periodontal pathology (gum disease) despite patients showing no symptoms. The negative impact of periodontal pathology may not be limited to the wisdom teeth region, but rather can have systemic (bodily) affects. Patients with no symptoms also may have

carious wisdom teeth, eventually decaying the tooth next to it. Wisdom teeth should be considered for removal when there is clinical and radiographic evidence of acute or chronic periodontitis (gum disease), pericoronitis (infection and inflammation of excess tissue over the impacted tooth), negative impact on adjacent teeth or not enough space in the jaw forcing the teeth to erupt improperly and grow in sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. In most patients some variation of these findings are present, making the person a candidate for wisdom teeth removal. In addition, wisdom teeth that are in the area of future jaw surgery or are interfering with orthodontic care also should be removed. All in all, the decision of wisdom teeth removal comes to life in most cases with two doctors bringing their expertise to the table, a general dentist and an oral surgeon. In an

orthodontic care scenario, a general dentist, orthodontist, and oral surgeon may work in concert to make a recommendation in the patient’s best interest. Poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems. When they are partially erupted or have a communication with the oral cavity, the gum opening around the teeth can allow food and bacteria to enter an uncleansible space around the tooth. This condition will eventually cause an infection and/or cavities and gum disease. The result: swelling, discomfort, pain, and illness. The impingement from the incorrectly erupting wisdom teeth may damage other teeth and disrupt the natural alignment of teeth. The most serious problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom teeth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth. Removal of offending impacted teeth might prevent possible future problems of this nature.

FINE DINING Market Cuisine West Provides Personalized Service and Exquisite Flavor by SAMANTHA EDWARDS | photos courtesy of Market Cuisine West

A

lthough Market Cuisine West was established just this year, owner and chef Stephen GianDonato has a lifetime of experience in the food service industry. “I grew up around our family deli businesses doing basically every job you can do,” he shared. Stephen opened his first restaurant in Atlantic City, NJ at the age of 18, attended culinary school, and began to work his way through a variety of high-level industry jobs. In 2004, Stephen opened Market Cuisine Catering in Wayne, PA, through which he catered many prestigious events including presidential inaugurations, the Atlantic City Boat Show, Wawa Welcome America festival, and Dad Vail Regatta, among others. Stephen and his wife Stephanie recently decided to relocate to San Diego, and closed business doors in Pennsylvania. “Once out here, I saw the quality of service that was provided in my field,” Stephen said, “and decided I had to show the area how I do things.” And Market Cuisine West was born. Market Cuisine West is a full-service catering and event coordinating company that handles every aspect of your party, from

planning to execution. The company is available for any type of small or large event including private dinner parties, weddings, holiday parties, bridal/baby showers, funeral receptions, corporate meetings, and outdoor events. Stephen offers highly personalized service, meeting privately with each client to design the menu, sample menu tastings, and discuss any additional needs. Clients work directly with him from start to finish. Stephen has experience with a wide range of cuisines, including Italian, American, Asian, Mexican, and vegetarian, and is always adding new items to his repertoire. He does the preparation and cooking himself, and can customize an event menu based on the client’s personal tastes. “I pride myself in knowing all cooking techniques,” he explained, “which allows me to be able to cook all types of food in all different styles.” Market Cuisine West provides the kind of high-quality service you would expect from a large catering company with the personalized touch of a family-owned operation. “We’re bringing back the old school way of being someone people can truly trust and count on.” 

LOCAL STUDENTS WIN CIVIC DESIGN CHALLENGE

T

wo of five League of Amazing Programmers teams took home top honors at the inaugural Design for San Diego (D4SD) competition in October, including the $5,000 grand prize. The competition, launched by University of California San Diego’s Design Lab, focused on the issue of mobility, asking participants the question, “How might we create a San Diego where all move more freely?” and challenged them to solve this complex city-wide problem through design thinking and crowd-sourcing. The League’s grand prize-winning team, Cycle Detection, addressed the specific question: “How can we make bicycles more visible to cars of the future?” Team members include junior Savera Soin (CCA), sophomore James Maron (CCA), freshman D.J. Nelson (Francis Parker), and mentor Stephen Cerruti. In addition to $5,000, the team earned the opportunity to work with venture capital and private equity firm SCALE SD, the UC San Diego Design Lab, and the San Diego Association of Governors to implement their idea.

Another League team, San Diego Parking App, was recognized as a finalist for their work on an app that shows available parking within downtown San Diego. Team members include senior Thomas Twomey (Cathedral Catholic), senior Tyler Reinecke (Del Norte), sophomore Jangwoo Lee (CCA), eighth grader Adrian Derderian (Escondido Christian School), and mentor Dave Dunn. The League’s students were the only high school-aged participants who entered the competition alongside design professionals and college and graduate students. The competition drew 50 applications, with eight finalists selected from 23 completed submissions. Finalists then presented their projects to judges in front of a live audience at the Design Forward Summit at Liberty Station. armel Valley student members of Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States (AYLUS), hailing from Canyon Crest Academy, Torrey Pines High School, Carmel Valley Middle School, and Pacific Trails Middle School, have lead multiple fundraising efforts for those in need in recent months. AYLUS has five branches in the Greater Houston area, so when San Diego members heard of the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey, they set up a nationwide fundraising drive to help the children of Houston families whose homes were flooded. The AYLUS San Diego Branch raised more than $12,000, with all AYLUS branches raising over $21,000 total. Funds were sent to Houston through the American Red Cross. Local AYLUS students also recently organized a fundraising concert for Deaf Community Services of San Diego (DCSSD), in which they performed folk and ballet dances, read poems, and played classical musical instruments for senior citizens at the Casa de Mañana Retirement Community in La Jolla. Stephen Yang, President of AYLUS, and Christopher Yang, President of AYLUS San Diego Branch, presented a check of $1,270 to DCSSD. AYLUS promotes the development of its members’ creativity, leadership, and initiative through the planning and execution of volunteer projects that aim to benefit their communities. Other projects include holiday gift drives, school supplies care drives, eyeglasses drives, recycling and cleanup events, homeless hygiene care drives, book drives, and annual veteran appreciation events. AYLUS San Diego is one of 35 branches across the country. Discover more at www.aylus.org. 

Carmel Valley Recreation Center and Ocean Air Recreation Center, as well as many neighborhood parks and joint-use sites in conjunction with the local school districts. The Carmel Valley Skate Park is one of my responsibilities where my staff and I ensure that the skate park remains safe and enjoyable for those individuals that visit the premises on a daily basis. This includes daily maintenance and upkeep. We promote safe skateboarding through our seasonal program brochure and hold skateboarding classes through the Carmel Valley Recreation Center. WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT YOUR ROLE? WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU FACE? I get most satisfaction in providing safe and enjoyable recreation programming opportunities for the community. Keeping parks maintained is my biggest challenge. With limited budgets, we do our best to keep the playing fields safe and playable. We preserve

other park assets to the best of our abilities given watering restrictions and other factors. APPROXIMATELY HOW MANY SKATERS VISIT THE PARK IN A GIVEN WEEK, MONTH, OR YEAR? The amount of skaters that visit varies based on the weather and the time of year. But we estimate the park averages 100 people daily, which triples during the peak summer months. ARE THERE FEES TO USE THE PARK? There is no charge to enjoy the park and it is open to the public. ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL ACTIVITIES OR PROGRAMS AVAILABLE SPECIFICALLY FOR CHILDREN, TEENS, OR ADULTS? There is a wide variety of beginner and advanced programs offered during the fall and winter months. An annual skate contest is held every October by SD Skatelife. During school vacations skateboarding camps are offered to the public at nominal fees. WHY IS THE SKATE PARK AN ASSET TO THE COMMUNITY? This park is an asset to the community because it gives patrons a safe and appropriate place to ride their skateboards. People travel from

around the region to skateboard at the park and it is frequently listed as one of the top skate parks in the San Diego area by skateboard websites and social media posts. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PARK? FUTURE GOALS, RENOVATIONS, ACTIVITIES, ETC.? The skate park recently completed a nearly $50,000 renovation to repair the coping and tiles throughout the park. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD? Carmel Valley Skate Park is one of only a few lighted skateboard parks in the City of San Diego, which allows patrons to utilize it after school and work during the fall months when the sun sets early. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day of the year, including holidays. 

athedral Catholic High School’s (CCHS) core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility have guided the development of high-achieving, well-rounded leaders for over 60 years. The CCHS legacy has deep roots, though the name is only 12 years old. Cathedral Girls High School merged with University San Diego High School (UNI) in 1970 on UNI’s Linda Vista Campus. UNI transitioned to the current CCHS Campus in Carmel Valley in 2005 and took on the new name of Cathedral Catholic High School. “No matter what campus you were on, once you become a Don, you’re always a Don,” said CCHS President Mr. Stevan Laaperi. “The Dons’ legacy has never been stronger. Over 50 alumni are among the CCHS team of administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff.” The professional staff is well qualified to uphold that legacy. Most teachers have a master’s degree or higher in the subject they teach, and the entire staff strives to model the values of a Catholic faith community. The school is accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and holds membership with the College Board. “In partnership with parents,

we form an educational ministry that is mutually supportive and a community committed to excellence,” said Principal Mr. Kevin Calkins. “It is our intent that our graduates carry a spirit of intellectual curiosity and a love of learning on their continuing journey of personal and spiritual growth.” Over 1,600 students are currently beginning that journey on the dynamic CCHS campus. Facilities include 75 classrooms, 12 science labs, two computer labs, a robotics lab, a ceramics studio, a music room, a lecture hall, several special-use classrooms, worldclass athletic facilities, a library, a lecture hall, a chapel and meditation garden – there’s a place for every student to discover their passion. Over 70 percent of CCHS students participate in one or more of the school’s 80-plus teams. “Whether you are an athlete, love to act, or have a passion for serving others, at Cathedral Catholic you gain the confidence to make a difference not only in your life but in the world around you,” said Kate, a graduate from the Class of 2017. Nicole, another recent graduate, agreed: “There is an unparalleled wealth of opportunities, and a strong support system in the students and faculty as part of the Catholic community.” 

ocated 15 minutes northeast of Carmel Valley in 4S Ranch, SKY Facial Plastic Surgery is owned by husband and wife team and local residents Dr. Sirius and Amber Yoo. Focusing on the face and neck only, Dr. Yoo and his team create customized treatments that combine cosmetic surgery with fat transfer, laser treatments, Botox, fillers, or skin care for impressive results that look incredibly natural. “I am blown away by how awesome Dr. Yoo did – he is the best,” shared one patient. “I am so excited and happy with the results. I have never seen my face look this good.” Double board certified in both facial plastic surgery and head & neck surgery, Dr. Yoo is one of a select number of surgeons in the nation to complete a prestigious fellowship in facial plastic surgery at Stanford University. This unique credential combination coupled with a reputation for natural-looking results are what set Dr. Yoo apart. “After several consults with other doctors in the area, I immediately knew after meeting with Dr. Yoo that he was the doctor I would trust for my surgery,” stated another patient. “He has taken years of my face without the ‘overdone look’ you see so often.” SKY’s delighted patients have continued to garner the company a lot of attention. Not only

has Dr. Yoo won Ranch & Coast Magazine’s coveted Best Cosmetic Surgeon award three years running now, but also his wife Amber was honored earlier this year as SKY’s Vice President for leading one of the top 100 fastest growing Gator-led companies in the nation. (Both the Yoos graduated from the University of Florida.) “This wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful patients, who put their faith in us every day, and our amazing team, who give their all to provide the best experience for our patients,” said Amber. When the SKY team isn’t busy transforming lives, you’ll find them volunteering and supporting local charities. “Giving back to the community is a huge part of who we are at SKY,” explained Amber, an active member of The Country Friends, Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary, and United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council. “We support several fundraisers throughout the year and are proud to be annual sponsors for both Helen Woodward Animal Center and the FACE Foundation.” A family-owned business that delivers the best results, provides impeccable customer service, and gives back to the community? SKY Facial Plastic Surgery fits right into its beautiful North County home. 

Kathy Liu Turns Tragedy Into Triumph by Giving Back to Families Affected by Childhood Cancer

n March 2013, Kathy Liu and her husband received devastating news: their son, Joey, a fifth grader, was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer. The family immediately started looking for the best treatment options for Joey and traveled all over the country doing so. Sadly, after about a year and a half, Joey lost his battle with cancer and passed away on November 26, 2014 at the age of 10. Dealing with immense heartbreak, Kathy decided to turn the family’s tragedy into something positive, creating a nonprofit organization in memory of Joey called Joey’s Wings. “Our mission is to fund research that focuses on kidney cancers affecting children and young adults, raise awareness, and provide support to families affected by childhood cancer,” explained Kathy. “One hundred percent of all donations made are used towards research and treatment options, patient care, and advocacy for developing less toxic therapies to treat kidney cancer among children and young adults.” Joey’s Wings, which is supported by a board of directors operating entirely on a volunteer basis, recently installed 2,000 origami cranes at The New Children’s Museum in San Diego, a project inspired by Joey and his love for origami. “Each crane honors one of the approximately 2,000 children in the United States who pass away from cancer every year,” stated Kathy. “The crane represents a prayer and a wish for recovery, hence a powerful message of joy during a very difficult time.” The organization also sells origami crane jewelry, strings, and earrings to fundraise for childhood cancer research. “The response from the community has been amazing,” shared Kathy. “We’ve seen so much praise on social media. People took pictures of cranes and posted, which helps promote the awareness.” Joey’s Wings is even funding 100 tickets to this year’s Global Winter Wonderland at SDCCU Stadium for local families who are affected by childhood cancer. In addition to her work with Joey’s Wings, Kathy is also spearheading a new group called the San Diego Childhood Cancer Coalition, a group of San Diego-based nonprofits who, as individual organizations, assist children and families affected by cancer. “Together as a coalition, we are building a unified voice to share the needs of kids fighting cancer with San Diego County,” explained Kathy. Through this journey, Kathy has learned a lot, most specifically how to be her child’s advocate, how to connect with researchers and doctors, and how to best promote awareness of childhood cancer. “The most challenging aspect is fundraising,” noted Kathy. “Research on childhood cancer only gets four percent of federal funding.” But despite its challenges, Kathy has high hopes for the future of Joey’s Wings. “Joey’s Wings continues to work hard toward a cure,” explained Kathy. “We will host more events reaching out to more local families affected by pediatric cancer. (We) will also make more advocacy efforts, lobbying the government toward more research funding for childhood cancer.” She added, “Joey is forever my dear son and he is the mountain that moves me forward to help the children and families who deal with this horrible disease.” 

If the Price is Right… by JESSICA BREAUX

Y

ou are thinking about selling your house – but only if you can get the right price! So, you find an agent that will agree to list your home for more than it’s worth. I hear this all the time, and it can be a recipe for disaster. Selling your home can be an emotional experience. And every seller wants to get the most that they can. The reason why you should not overprice your home is simple: it won’t sell. Pricing your home correctly from the beginning is critical. Buyers are more savvy than ever before. With today’s technology, it is easier than ever to spot a home that is overpriced. Many negative things can happen when an overpriced listing hits the market, including but not limited to missed buyer opportunities.

There are many aspects to selling a home for top dollar. The answer to achieving this usually comes down to three controllable variables: price, property condition, and marketing. The goal is to create a high demand for your home, and pricing it correctly can be one of the biggest influencers. Just like any other product, if careful attention is given to these variables, you will ultimately be pleased with the outcome. If you are considering making a move, you should be able to do so with confidence. Give me a call to schedule a meeting. It’s important to work with someone that you trust, and I would love the opportunity to get to know you and discuss your real estate goals. 

WINTER

LIGHTS Enjoy the Sights and Lights this Season in the Best-Decorated Local Neighborhoods by LAINEY KRAL

A

s the weather turns colder, San Diegans pull boxes out of storage and get ready to brighten up the winter season. The tradition of decorating homes with electric lights began taking off in the 1960s as a next step from decorated Christmas trees, and has since spread around the world. Colorful holiday and seasonal decorations can be found in most San Diegan neighborhoods, but some streets stand out for their over-the-top festive displays. Wait until the sun goes down and bring the whole family for a tour of one – or more – of these twinkling destinations.
