Most of the good jobs in the future will have something to do with computers. Some people choose to learn computer science at college. Others, like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, started early with coding to hone their problem-solving skills. InGenius promotes and supports computing education for K-12 students. COMPUTATIONAL THINKING WITHOUT CODING: Students can learn about algorithms and computational problem-solving without writing one line of coding. They can learn through engaging games and puzzles that use cards, boards, string, crayons and lots of walking and running around. There are many resources and competitions for computational thinking. We highly recommend Bebras Challenge (http://www.bebras.org/).

LEARNING TO CODE: For those students who want to solve problems with coding, they can option to learn programming. For young beginners, we recommend graphical block-based languages. Scratch and Alice 3 are among the most popular novice programming environments. Students learn programmatic constructs and focus on problems logic without losing sleep over syntax. When students are ready for the next step, they can choose a text-based language. Some of the most popular languages include Java, C++, and Python. These languages are more similar to each other than they are different. With any of these languages, students can learn important programming concepts such as object oriented programming, conditionals, loops and arrays. COMPETITIVE PROGRAMMING AND ALGORITHMS: For those aspiring students who want to learn beyond just programming and start their journey with algorithm and solving complex problems, preparing and participating in programming contests can be very helpful. USA Computing Olympiad (http://www.usaco.org/) is among the most reputable ones. Their contests are algorithmic in nature and require clever algorithms and/or data structures to solve problems with time constraints.

Mother’s Day

A

lthough Mother’s Day was last month, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write about it this issue. I have been blessed with great mothers surrounding me throughout my life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day each year, I often reflect on my childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood. I was raised by a very strong and supportive mother, and as a first grandchild, I also spent many of my younger years with my grandmother. Unfortunately, these two wonderful women are no longer with us today, but the memories and life lessons that I received from them are forever held close to my heart. Having lost my mother to a tragic automobile accident back in 2010 and my grandmother to cancer more recently, you would think that Mother’s Day would approach with some apprehension. However, much to my pleasant surprise, I’ve discovered that Mother’s Day has become one of the most meaningful holidays of the year. Even though the day typically starts with a little sadness – more like a period of reflection – it quickly turns into a very deep and significant day. Not only do I have an opportunity to celebrate the great memories surrounding my mother and grandmother, I also have the privilege of having several more fantastic mothers that surround me, support me, and make our lives more meaningful. While there are too many wonderful mothers in our friends and family sphere to mention in this letter, I would like to take a moment to recognize a few of them. First on the list, I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Jessica, for being such an awesome mother to our three kids (as well as many of the neighborhood kids). There are quite a few kiddos around the community (some adults in college now) that have grown up calling you “Momma” Breaux. We are all lucky to have you do what you do. Happy Mother’s Day, Jessica! Derrick Breaux I would also like to take a moment to send a heartfelt Publisher thank you to my mother-in-law Trish and mother-in-law Doreen. Not only are you both incredible influences on our family, but you are also wonderful grandmothers to our kids. We are all extremely happy to have you be a major part of our lives. Happy Mother’s Day, Trish and Doreen! Last but not least, I would like to recognize my sister. Not only are you a great sister, you are also a wonderful mother. I find great joy in watching the way you raise your three children, often displaying the incredibly familiar and nurturing parenting that our mother used with the two of us growing up. It warms my heart beyond words. Happy Mother’s Day, Angelique! And a belated happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the world (past and present) that have impacted our lives. I hope your Mother’s Day was filled with lots of hugs, special memories, love, and laughter.

Surfer Ari Engel Makes a Name For Himself in Local Waters by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Alan Smith Photography

T

orrey Pines High School freshman Ari Engel can most often be found in the ocean searching for the perfect wave. Ari has been surfing since he was nine years old and has been competing in the sport for the past two years. “Since the time I started surfing, I’ve been hooked,” revealed Ari. In 2017, he surfed 509 times, and he is on his way to beating that record in 2018. “My goal is to surf 550 times in 2018,” he said. Ari earned the title of Revolt Summer Surf Series (RSSS) Champion last October, an accomplishment he worked hard to achieve. “I was super stoked to be RSSS champ. I surfed many challenging locations and trained really hard for the championship series,” stated Ari, who also competed in the Western Surfing Association and National Scholastic Surfing Association competitions. He is a member of the Torrey Pines Surf Team and enjoys hanging out with his teammates and admires their surfing talents. Although one of Ari’s favorite local spots is in Del Mar at 15th Street, he is no stranger to the waves up and down the state of California and beyond. “I really appreciate my dad for taking me all the way from Northern California down to Ensenada, Mexico to catch waves. His support has helped me get to where I am today,” Ari shared. In addition to his family, Ari is inspired by surfing legend Kelly Slater. “Kelly is by far the world’s best surfer and worked really hard throughout his surfing career,” said Ari, whose biggest goal besides surfing as much as possible is to make the World Tour of Surfing. Out of the water, Ari enjoys his auto tech and video film classes at Torrey Pines High School, skateboarding, off-road racing, and eating tacos with his friends. However, he is most at home in the water, catching great waves and getting better at his sport.  AT-A-GLANCE Name: Ari Engel (14) School: Torrey Pines High School Grade: 9 Parents: Duncan and Latifa Sibling: Samina (16) Favorite Local Spot: Del Mar 15th Street 14 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

hirteen years ago, Angela and Jon Pasquini were searching for the perfect place to settle down and start their family. Carmel Valley fit exactly what they wanted in a community. “It has great schools, beautiful weather, and it’s centrally located,” explained Angela. “In our many years here, we have met so many great families in the area who will be lifelong friends.” Angela works as an administration manager at CUSO Financial Services, a broker-dealer in Scripps Ranch. John works in commercial real estate finance in Carmel Valley. The couple met when they used to work for the same company and were introduced at a holiday work party in Hollywood. “Neither of us were planning on attending the event, and upon meeting, previously recalled a mutual friend indicating how we should meet,” Angela shared. At the time, Angela was working for the company headquarters in La Jolla and Jon was at the Walnut Creek office in Northern California. Today, they have two children, Gianni

and Vincent, who are active in sports and the community. Gianni, 9, plays soccer, tennis, basketball, and enjoys boogie boarding. Vincent, 10, plays golf and enjoys parkour, playing with friends, and hiking. As an active family, they love the hiking trails in Torrey Pines and Los Peñasquitos Canyon. They also enjoy visiting Powerhouse Park and the beach in Del Mar, Liberty Station, and “of course, trying any new good eatery we come across,” Angela said. While the family loves the outdoors, Angela and Jon acknowledged their reliance on their iPhones to keep track of their busy lives. “If we didn’t use our electronic calendars on our smart phones to sync up our lives, we would fall apart!” Angela said. For work, for play, and for family life, the Pasquini family is happy to have found the perfect home base. “We are grateful and proud to be 13-year residents of Carmel Valley,” they explained. “We couldn’t imagine living anywhere else!” 

What To Do When a Loved One is an Addict The following is an excerpt of a piece written by a New Life House Recovery Community Mother. To find more ways to help yourself or a loved one, or read the full version, please visit: NewLifeHouse.com/zcode.

“O

nce you see addiction you can no longer un-see it, as much as you might like to go on denying and hoping it wasn’t there or possibly not that bad. Don’t be fooled. Know where and when to get help. Don’t do it alone. You will want to isolate to keep it hush. This is natural. We want to protect our kids. We can handle this in-house, you say. When I first realized my son was using heroin, the sheer panic that I felt was something I had never felt before. I’ll give you some examples of what I did to try to help my son with his drug abuse. First, I scoured the internet for everything I could find out about heroin use and/or every other drug. Then I searched for the signs to look for, ways to treat, and treatment centers. Then the feelings of anger and sadness, guilt and disbelief and fear welled up in me. My fear was overwhelming. The fear made me crazy. Things got worse. Not to mention, the first rehab and then the second (because 30 days is not enough time for anyone to get well) but that’s where we all start. You may have heard the term enabling and possibly the term co-dependency. Has anyone suggested you go to an Al-Anon or Nar-Anon meeting? I had heard of these but wasn’t convinced A G E IRECOVE

needed them at first, because who has the time?! We’ve all heard about letting someone hit their bottom. But how do you do that as a mother, as a parent, when it’s your job to protect your kids and keep them safe? Step One: I needed to admit I was powerless over the addict – that our lives had become unmanageable. Here’s some Dos and Don’ts while I am at it: • Do encourage attempts to seek help • Do remember the good in others and yourself • Do allow other people to accept their own responsibilities • Don’t forget addiction is an illness, not a moral issue • Don’t overprotect, cover up, or rescue from the consequences • Don’t underestimate the importance of release with love I’m pleased to report that my son Adam, through many tries at sobriety, became successful through a wonderful wilderness program and New Life House and has remained sober for about two years! He has worked incredibly hard and has had enormous amounts of help, structure, and caring instruction on S Phow E toCliveI his F new I Csober life, for which I am so grateful.”  RY COMMUNITY

Healthy Relationships, Healthy Lives

Kim Marriage and Family Therapy Cares About Emotional and Relational Health by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Jessica Breaux

F

or Susan Kim, health is holistic. “Just as we care about our physical health, our emotional and relational health are vital aspects of our well-being that also require attention and care,” she explained. As a therapist for the last 25 years, Susan’s goal at Kim Marriage and Family Therapy is to help people experience long-term positive change that leads to happier, healthier, and more meaningful lives. Susan’s approach to therapy is a strength-based one. She looks at behaviors as adaptive and acknowledges the importance of the behavior even if it is causing challenges. The goal is to find alternate ways of being that are more effective. “We work with patients to find immediate, concrete solutions and address underlying issues that contribute to the difficulties so that patients are more likely to experience long-term positive change rather than a short-term ‘bandaging’ of the situation,” Susan said. To accomplish this, she integrates a number of modalities, including attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, mindfulness practice, and depth psychology. The counseling practice serves individuals, couples, children, and families. It was especially established to assist step-parents and step-families (or blended families) as they experience unique dynamics and stressors that many people and practitioners are unaware of. “Kim Marriage and Family Therapy strives to repair and restore ruptured relationships so that patients experience a reduction in pain and conflict and feel more at peace “Participating in therapy is and better about themselves and the important people in their lives,” an investment in yourself Susan shared. These relationships and in your relationships.” may be a couple, a parent and child, and even the relationship with oneself. “We provide a sensitive, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space for people to explore struggles within themselves and in their relationships, and to generate solutions that fit their unique circumstances,” Susan said. Working with people to help them in their healing is a great privilege for Susan. “I enjoy sharing the moments when my patients recognize the strengths and resources within themselves to move through their difficulties and discover hope and new possibilities that they had not been able to see before,” she expressed. “I am amazed by people’s resilience and their natural tendency towards love.” Kim Marriage and Family Therapy offers a free monthly Family Matters e-newsletter that contains tips and tools to keep families healthy and happy, and free initial phone consultations to answer any questions that people may have about participating in therapy. Susan also offers presentations to local groups on mental health issues. “While some people may be hesitant to talk about relationship issues and address mental health concerns,” Susan acknowledged, “participating in therapy is an investment in yourself and in your relationships.” 

TALENT IN TRAINING Studio West Offers Music Production Camps for Young Musicians

S

tudio West has been San Diego’s premier recording studio for over 40 years, but recently some new clients have been working there. In 2015, owner Peter Dyson started a series of week-long music production camps for middle and high school students, largely due to his own children’s musical journey. “My daughter plays the harp and my son is a drummer. They both had amazing teachers and great experiences performing with various ensembles, but a recording studio is a different environment that helps musicians grow.” The week-long camps involve instruction in songwriting, production and performance. Many students have a background in music theory and traditional instruments, but it’s not a requirement. “A laptop is now a musical instrument, just like a piano or guitar, but to play it requires the same instruction, discipline, and hard work that’s required for more traditional instruments,” said Dyson.

Performing in a studio is intimidating, but students rise to the occasion. As the lead instructor, San Diego songwriter, performer, and father of two multi-instrumentalist preteen boys Shawn Rohlf explains it, “I’m amazed at the musicianship and work ethic of the kids. If they are this good now, where will they be in 10 years?” At the end of the week, parents and students listen to the songs that students have written and produced over the week. The experience leaves many ready for more. As student Chrysta Hlavacek (17) puts it, “Making music with talented artists is my dream job, and going to Studio West helps me get there.” 

STUDENT WINS ASPIRATIONS IN COMPUTING AWARD

S

ahana Kumar, a 92130 resident and junior at Francis Parker School, was recently awarded the Aspirations in Computing Award from the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) San Diego Affiliate. The award honors high school girls who have demonstrated interest and achievements in STEM fields, proven leadership ability, academic performance, and plans for continuing their education. “It felt very surreal to win,” Sahana shared. “The best part was definitely just getting the opportunity to interact with other girls who won the award and hear about all the incredible things they’ve done.” Sahana is a member of the Science Olympiad Advisory Board, the president of the Math Team, the director of website education on her school’s History Day team, and the director of software training and autonomous code on Francis

Parker’s FRC Robotics Team. She was also the recipient of the FRC Dean’s List Award at the FIRST Las Vegas Regional competition. Outside of school, Sahana has interned with University of California San Diego’s Cardiac Mechanics Research Group for the past two years, runs a writing club at the library in National City, and volunteers with an organization called EIS that helps bring science to children whose schools have underfunded science programs. She enjoys writing and has even published two fantasy fiction novels, the first at age 12 and the second at age 14. “In the future, I hope to major in bioengineering or electrical engineering and work on developing medical devices,” Sahana said. “I also hope to continue working with organizations like EIS to bring science and robotics to kids who haven’t been lucky enough to experience it the way I have.” 

COMMUNITY STUFF

2018 Kendra Couch Classic photo by Megan Elizabeth Photography

Mt. Carmel High School’s (MCHS) Kendra Couch Classic brought together eight baseball teams from local high schools – Torrey Pines, Canyon Crest Academy, Scripps Ranch, Santa Fe Christian, La Jolla Country Day, Bishop’s, and Clairemont – to raise awareness and money for cancer research this past spring. Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy played in the final championship game, with Torrey Pines ultimately emerging as the champions. Since 2012, MCHS has hosted a “Cancer Game” against another local high school for the same purpose, with this year being the first as a tournament. Players from all eight teams wore jerseys with the names of people who have been affected by cancer and, after the tournament, the jerseys and other items were auctioned off. A total of $24,000 was raised this year – almost doubling the amount raised in the first six years. All proceeds were donated to the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. Learn more about the tournament at www.kendracouchclassic.com.

7th Annual Heart of a Child Concert A record number of community members attended Resounding Joy’s 7th Annual Heart of a Child benefit concert at Irwin M Jacobs Qualcomm Hall, raising over $85,000 for the Ariana Miller Music with Heart Program, which provides music therapy to local children suffering from heart disease and other serious illnesses. The event, co-hosted by San Diego television personality Pat Brown and network television director Hal Grant, featured a diverse lineup of local talent, including special guest performer Merrick Hanna, who astounded the audience with his “flo-bot”-style dance moves. “It is wonderful to bring the best young musical talent in San Diego to the community in this format at the prestigious venue of Qualcomm Hall while also raising record funds for Resounding Joy’s Ariana Miller Music with Heart Program,” said Heart of a Child Event Chair Dr. Jeffrey Miller. To date, the program has provided no-cost music therapy to over 1,500 seriously ill patients at Rady Children’s Hospital. Learn more at www.resoundingjoyinc.org.

The League Unveils Innovation Lab photo by Jody Pinchin

Jana Odou, who has lived in Carmel Valley for 30 years, recently appeared on CBS’s The Price Is Right. While attending a taping of the show with her family, Jana had the opportunity to “come on down” to the stage to play One Bid, which she won after bidding just $1 higher than the contestant before her. Jana advanced to the Pricing Game, where she had five chances to guess the price of a new car. “My last guess was on a whim, and when I heard the winning bell I just took off running across the stage to see my new Volkswagen Jetta!” she exclaimed. Jana was the top winner of the day, earning her a place in the Showcase Showdown. She did not ultimately win the Showcase, but she is still grateful for the experience. “I am the one who never wins anything,” she said, “but this time I will be the one driving around Carmel Valley in the red Jetta thankful for all my blessings.”

The League of Amazing Programmers hosted their 2nd Annual Parent Night and unveiled their new expanded space, The Innovation Lab. Over 100 current League parents, community partners, and prospective parents attended the event, which also highlighted the accomplishments the League and its students have experienced in the past year. “We are so proud of this work and love watching our student’s impressive progress. Every day these kids amaze me. I’m confident the next Steve Jobs or Bill Gates will be a League student,” said Executive Director Vickie Barks. The League is a nonprofit organization that teaches San Diego youth in grades 5 through 12 Java programming, culminating with the Oracle junior programmer certificate, which helps prepare students for career or college readiness in STEM fields. The League will be offering new student workshops throughout the summer in both their Carmel Valley and San Marcos locations. For more information call 858-284-0481 or email info@jointheleague.org.

New CVMS Principal

NSGSL Celebrates 30 Seasons

San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD) recently named Ms. Victoria (Vicki) Kim as the new principal of Carmel Valley Middle School (CVMS). Current CVMS principal Cara Dolnik will move to Diegueño Middle School beginning next school year. Ms. Kim began her career as a middle school physical education teacher in Northern California. She taught a variety of subjects for six years before becoming an assistant principal in the San Jose Unified School District. After spending 11 years there, Ms. Kim moved to Palo Alto High School, where she is currently finishing her fifth year as assistant principal. Ms. Kim has had direct involvement with and oversight of many departments and initiatives including English, math, special education, physical education, equity, assessment, student activities, athletics, counseling, master scheduling, wellness and safety, and guidance. She will assume her position as CVMS principal in the fall.

The North Shore Girls Softball League (NSGSL) celebrated its 30th season anniversary earlier this year at the league’s opening night. The girls dressed up and paraded in their special 30th anniversary shirts. Debbie Ewing, NSGSL founder and first president, along with her family, attended the evening and spoke to the 300 girls and their families about the league’s local roots. Debbie and a couple of her friends started the league for their daughters in 1989, recruiting friends, neighbors, and girls from the local Little League, and using borrowed and donated equipment. Despite its humble beginnings, the NSGSL is still growing and thriving today. NSGSL serves girls ages 5 to 14 in the communities of Carmel Valley, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Fairbanks Ranch, Rancho Santa Fe, and Torrey Hills. Discover more at www.northshoregirlssoftball.com.

ince its establishment in 1977, Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery continues to grow and maintain its high standard of excellence. Three years ago, Dr. Tarkan Sidal took over the practice with a commitment to uphold its extraordinary reputation. “I enjoy following the footsteps of the original founders of Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery by providing patient-centered care,” said Dr. Sidal. “I am committed to providing the finest individual care and exceptional service in every aspect of patient treatment.”

Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery offers a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery ranging from dental implant surgery, bone grafting, and wisdom teeth removal, to trauma, jaw surgery, and pathology. “If surgery needs to be performed in the hospital and a hospital stay is required, I am on staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital, Sharp Memorial Hospital, Scripps Mercy Hospital, and Scripps Clinic,” noted Dr. Sidal. “We also diagnose and treat orofacial pain, facial injuries, and fractures.” Dr. Sidal prides himself on having a kind and compassionate approach toward

his patients – a quality that helps to set his practice apart from others in its industry. “We believe in traditional values such as excellent customer service and personalized attention to our patients, and we treat every patient as if they were part of the family,” explained Dr. Sidal. “We pride ourselves on attention to detail. We will make sure to fully explain the necessary procedures to patients and answer any questions they might have.” Both a licensed physician and oral maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Sidal is expertly skilled in caring for face and jaw conditions. After receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Dr. Sidal participated in several oral and maxillofacial surgery internship and externship programs. He then completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center. “Upon completing medical school, my curiosity in learning and everlasting passion in the dentistry, medicine and surgery, brought me back home to UCSF where I completed a prestigious Chief Resident appointment in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as a General Surgery Internship at the UCSF, Department of Surgery,” elaborated Dr. Sidal. “I then embarked on completing two years of rigorous fellowship training at the San Diego Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.” Since then, Dr. Sidal – who is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and Oral and Facial

Surgeons of California – has participated in various surgical missions to underprivileged communities where he has volunteered to treat patients with maxillofacial defects and injruies. “During my fellowship, I also served as an integral part of an elite reconstructive team of surgeons at the Sharp Memorial Hospital, partnering with Operation of Hope,” recalled Dr. Sidal. Today, Dr. Sidal is enthusiastic about continuing the legacy of Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and is steadfast on providing a personalized and relaxed atmosphere with a professional staff that is focused on building trusting relationships with patients. “We believe in compassion and your comfort tops our list of priorities,” shared Dr. Sidal. “We are advocates of healthy quality living, body and soul nourishment for supporting healthier and productive lives, and we believe in patient care where patients are evaluated as whole and not just focused on parts.” 

“Charlotte is super friendly, smart, punctual, generous, and most importantly she knows what she’s doing. Her real estate knowledge is great and her amazing people skills cannot be matched. She was recommended to us by a former neighbor and from the moment we met her, we felt like we had known each other for a while. She first helped us buy a beautiful new home in a highly competitive seller market. Besides getting our offer accepted, she also navigated the rough waters of escrow with confidence and kept us calm each time we were in panic mode. After we moved into our new home, she helped us sell our old home above asking price and at the highest price in our neighborhood to date. She held open houses, staged our home beautifully, picked up a tab for cleaning and some repairs after the inspection, and kept us informed throughout the process. Professional all the way through and a great human being too! We are so happy with both transactions and as buyers and sellers, we highly recommend Charlotte!” – Jurate & Salil

pecialty Dog Training (SDT) has earned a reputation throughout the San Diego community and beyond for providing high-quality, customized, comprehensive dog training. Founded by husband and wife team Graham and Kyrié Bloem, SDT uses positive reinforcement, structure, and clear communication to help local dogs and their families. “No two dogs are the same, and we understand that each needs to be approached as an individual,” Graham explained. SDT offers obedience training from basic commands to advanced off-leash obedience, as well as Canine Good Citizen preparation and testing. Graham and his team work with all ages and breeds, offering private lessons and boot camp programs depending on each family’s needs. They also offer programs for behavioral issues and rehabilitation, therapy prep courses and service dog programs, and placement of pre-trained family and personal security dogs. Graham draws on his nearly two decades of experience to run a program that pet owners can trust. He’s a professional member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors, and International Association of Canine Professionals, and he’s an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and Authorized Mentor Trainer. He has won a number of awards, including 34 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

the American Red Cross Real Heroes Award, 10News Leadership Award, Waggy Award for Animal Welfare, and a finalist for the Inspiration Awards. Graham, Kyrié, and the entire SDT pack are proud of the difference they make for local families. They also give back through Shelter to Soldier, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Graham and Kyrié founded in conjunction with SDT. Shelter to Soldier adopts local shelter dogs and trains them as psychiatric service dogs for post 9/11 combat veterans in need. “We knew Shelter to Soldier wouldn’t succeed without leaning heavily on SDT, so we launched both simultaneously,” Graham said. “This allowed Shelter to Soldier to maintain low overhead and in turn help more homeless dogs and veterans in need of highly trained service dogs.” SDT and Shelter to Soldier have created countless success stories over the years, but some have stood out – including Nubs, an abused dog who befriended a U.S. Marine in Iraq under extraordinary circumstances. When LtCol Brian P. Dennis brought his canine companion back to the United States, Graham volunteered to guide Nubs through the rough transition. “Graham spent countless hours every week with Nubs for the better part of three months,” said LtCol Dennis. “What he was able to do was nothing short of miraculous. He took an abused, confused, terrified dog and eased him into the busy world of Southern California.” 

t was only by chance that Michael Orfield did not become a doctor. After graduating from Grossmont High School, Michael obtained a B.A. in Biology from the University of California San Diego. “I wanted to be a doctor, but 51 medical schools decided I should do something else with my life,” he joked. “I spent a graduate year at Duke University in microbiology and immunology before deciding that I needed a more public-oriented profession.” It was at this time that Michael decided to pursue a law degree, graduating from California Western School of Law in 1977. Less than 10 years after obtaining his J.D., Michael was appointed to the San Diego Municipal Court. Two years after that, he became a San Diego Superior Court judge. “I spent my Superior Court career at the Vista Courthouse,” said Michael. “My last seven years as a Civil Independent Calendar Judge.” In 2009, Michael retired from the bench, and, in another twist of fate, his career path took an unexpected turn. “My youngest daughter graduated from Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) in 2012. She had taken me to a CCA swap meet in 2011 where I noticed a table set up for the Speech and Debate Club. I struck up a conversation with the club president and ended up leaving my card if they ever needed any volunteers to help out.” Soon after their encounter, the club president reached out to Michael to let him know that the current coach was leaving and see if he would be interested in applying for the job. “I decided that would be a marvelous way to interact with the kids and so I applied,” recalled Michael, who had fond memories of being a part of his own high school speech and debate team. Michael started coaching the CCA Speech and Debate team in 2012 with just 10 kids. Today, his roster includes over 130 students. The team has qualified for the State Championships each year since 2013 and has qualified for the last four National Championships. They have also qualified for the Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky three times. “CCA has qualified for the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions in Denver,” added Michael. “And not just qualifying, but succeeding, going nine rounds deep into the tournament in Dallas, top 60 36 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

in the Nation at Salt Lake City, and a fifth place overall at the TOC in Kentucky.” The team’s growth has been so significant that Michael has recently brought on an assistant coach, Gherty Galace, who is also a credentialed teacher at CCA. “Together we intend to expand the ranks of our speech and continue to grow the debate side,” shared Michael. “We are hopeful of qualifying more students each year to the Championship Tournaments, as well as expanding our outreach programs in the community.” Michael also recently learned that he has reached the Diamond level of coaching from the National Speech and Debate Association, by receiving one point for every 10 merit points earned by the students. He will be honored with fellow Diamond coaches at the National Championship Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, FL in June. “This is an absolute tribute to and accomplishment of the Canyon Crest Academy Speech and Debate competitors, to whom I am eternally grateful,” he said. Michael is grateful to have been given the opportunity to spread the word about the value of speech and debate programs and about the benefits of being able to communicate in an intelligent and confident manner. “Students cannot fully appreciate, on this side of their lives, just how much of a benefit they obtain, how much better off they will be, how much more successful will be their endeavors with these skills by their side.” 

hey say eyes are windows to the soul. Beautiful eyes make us radiate and create something magical inside and out. Among the many new beauty trends available, eyelash extensions create a beautiful, eye-popping, and makeup-free effect. And when we look and feel good, confidence follows. Why have lash extensions become so in vogue? They used to be a beauty luxury reserved for the rich and famous. Today, lash extensions have become an affordable beauty practice for the masses due to advances in products and application technique. Amazing Lash Studio, a franchise that started in 2013, arrived in Carmel Valley in January of 2016 and in La Costa in June 2017. Carmel Valley/La Costa franchisee owner Theresa Shay has been established in her position for three years. Prior to Amazing Lash Studio, Theresa was in the real estate industry for 15 years, with owned brokerage for eight of those 15. Becoming part of the Amazing Lash Studio team was a no-brainer for Theresa — two of her brothers and a sister also own franchises in New Jersey and Connecticut. There are over 175 locations nationwide, with five in the San Diego County Region. At Amazing Lash Studio, it may take anywhere from one to two hours to apply extensions, depending on a full set or refill (maintenance) service. A synthetic lash fiber is applied to a natural lash on a 1-1 basis using medical-grade glue. There are four different lash styles to choose from: Natural, Cute, Sexy, or Gorgeous. And for the more intense, dramatic, fuller look, Amazing Volume lashes are available in Classic (3D) and Glam (6D). Each style provides longer, thicker lashes, however, the guest chooses their preferred length and thickness. All types enhance the eye beautifully and are extremely lightweight. Amazing Lash Studio’s licensed estheticians are trained over 80 hours on a patented lash application technique. Each guest receives a

consultation upon their first visit. The next step is to lie down, listen to music and relax — many even fall asleep — in one of the private suites while lashes are applied. The result? Eyes that pop and look vibrant without mascara, eyeliner, or an eyelash curler! While many people enjoy make-up free, “wake-up and go” eyes, eyelash extensions need to be washed and brushed daily. Like hair, lashes have a growth cycle, so as your natural lashes shed, new lash extensions should be applied every two to three weeks, depending on your natural growth cycle. If you want to look more beautiful, radiant, sexy, young, and reduce your daily make-up routine, try lash extensions... then, get ready for the compliments. uperb, family-oriented, friendly, and professional: all words used to describe North County DanceArts, Inc., a 38-yearold San Diego-based dance studio focused on providing professional instruction to people of all ages and skill levels. Founded and owned by husband-wife duo Louis and Tanya McKay, North County DanceArts, Inc. (NCDA) offers classes in jazz, tap, ballet, pointe, contemporary, lyrical, hip hop, tribal belly, acro, and ballet barre. They also offer musical theater workshops, competition coaching, and performances. “We can provide dance instruction for recreation and fitness or tailor a dance schedule that will lead to positions in the dance, theater, and/or film fields for students,” noted Tanya. “NCDA also offers an adult morning program that consists of many of the dance styles mentioned above and is designed specifically for busy adults.” So what’s the background of NCDA, you wonder? Prior to opening the studio, owner Louis McKay led an extensive professional career in the performing arts, working for renowned organizations such as the San Diego Opera Company, The Bright Side, and Starlight Theatre. He trained alongside dance legends including Pat Ricco, Gower Champion, and Toni Stevens. “Louis held the position of lead singer and dancer as well as the choreographer for The Debbie Reynolds Show for 10 years,” noted Tanya. “Louis’ television appearances included special guest on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, The John Davidson Show, The Mike Douglas Show, The Sonny and Cher Show, The Donny and Marie Show, and the Barbara Mandrell Show.” After retiring in 1980, Louis felt compelled to share his passion for dance and stage. 40 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

Today, the McKays pride themselves on running a family-oriented facility, upholding their staff to a strict code of ethics. “NCDA is a family-based dance school that focuses on providing the best professional instruction in a loving and nurturing atmosphere in order to build technique and instill a sense of self-worth and good self-esteem,” stated Tanya. “The staff instructors are those of the highest quality. M

ichi Synn, a Carmel Valley resident and fifth grade student at Solana Pacific Elementary School, along with her team Geeks on Fleek, were named the champions of the first season of NBC’s Genius Junior. The game show, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, teams up the brightest children ages 8 to 12 from across the country to compete in complex challenges involving math, memory, logic, spelling, and more. Over four rounds, with each round tougher than the last, teams of three work together to beat the competition. Each episode’s winning team then takes on The Cortex, the final round that gives them the opportunity to build up their prize fund. Geeks on Fleek beat out the other 11 teams to take home the Genius Junior grant that will help them prepare for their future. Michi was selected as a contestant for the show last year. She prepared by working on her memory skills, practicing mental calculations, and spelling words out loud. “Genius Junior was the single most inspiring and empowering experience I have had so far in my life,”

she said. “I met wonderful, brilliant, nice new friends. And, in challenging myself, I accomplished mental feats that I did not know I could do.” Michi’s favorite subject in school is math, and last year she won first place in the national competition, Math Kangaroo. “I love the logic and beauty of math,” she shared. Michi is also the youngest intern at a cancer immunotherapy research company. She is “fanatic” about her 11 American Girl dolls and loves reading, writing, and music. She also enjoys playing with her friends, her brother Sammy, and her family’s two dogs, Yoko and Ming. 

IS WISDOM TOOTH SURGERY NECESSARY? by TARKAN SIDAL, DDS, MD

S

urgical management of impacted third molars (wisdom teeth) is a common treatment frequently offered in oral and maxillofacial surgery offices. Despite how common the treatment is, removing wisdom teeth is not without controversy – some critics would argue that in the absence of disease or symptoms, patients would be subjected to pain, risk, and unfavorable economic outcome. However, strong peer reviewed research shows that retained wisdom teeth may involve periodontal pathology (gum disease) despite patients showing no symptoms. The negative impact of periodontal pathology may not be limited to the wisdom teeth region, but rather can have systemic (bodily) affects. Patients with no symptoms also may have

carious wisdom teeth, eventually decaying the tooth next to it. Wisdom teeth should be considered for removal when there is clinical and radiographic evidence of acute or chronic periodontitis (gum disease), pericoronitis (infection and inflammation of excess tissue over the impacted tooth), negative impact on adjacent teeth or not enough space in the jaw forcing the teeth to erupt improperly and grow in sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. In most patients some variation of these findings are present, making the person a candidate for wisdom teeth removal. In addition, wisdom teeth that are in the area of future jaw surgery or are interfering with orthodontic care also should be removed. All in all, the decision of wisdom teeth removal comes to life in most cases with two doctors bringing their expertise to the table, a general dentist and an oral surgeon. In an

orthodontic care scenario, a general dentist, orthodontist, and oral surgeon may work in concert to make a recommendation in the patient’s best interest. Poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems. When they are partially erupted or have a communication with the oral cavity, the gum opening around the teeth can allow food and bacteria to enter an uncleansible space around the tooth. This condition will eventually cause an infection and/or cavities and gum disease. The result: swelling, discomfort, pain, and illness. The impingement from the incorrectly erupting wisdom teeth may damage other teeth and disrupt the natural alignment of teeth. The most serious problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom teeth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth. Removal of offending impacted teeth might prevent possible future problems of this nature. 

Jonah’s Journey

LOCAL FAMILY ENCOURAGES SWIMMING SAFETY

T

he Karpmans moved to Carmel Valley from New York in 2010, enjoying an enriching life for their family of six. On December 20, 2017, all of that came to an abrupt halt when their son Jonah, a 2017 Torrey Pines High School graduate and freshman at UC Berkeley, was paralyzed after diving into Mission Bay. On that morning, Jonah’s mother received the call every parent fears, telling her to come to hospital. Jonah received emergency surgery and was airlifted to Craig Hospital in Denver, CO to receive rehabilitative care. He is now an outpatient working to gain strength in functioning muscles and learn daily living skills so that he can return to college. The Karpman family – which includes Jonah’s parents Mark and Darcy, and his three siblings Justin, Haylee, and Eli – ask others to keep their story in mind as the summer months approach. “We are grateful to everyone “When diving into water, in Carmel Valley for the whether it’s pools, ocean strength we have gained from waves, or shallower their prayers and support...” bays and lakes, be extra cautious,” they said. “Look before you leap.” They also urge anyone who witnesses a possible spinal cord injury to follow American Red Cross recommendations by not moving the victim unless needed for safety, carefully bracing the neck, and calling for medical assistance. “We are grateful to everyone in Carmel Valley for the strength we have gained from their prayers and support and hope it continues throughout the coming years.” Learn more about Jonah’s story at www.gofundme.com/JonahKarpman. 

DENTIST PROFILE

THE SUPER DENTISTS: HELPING SAN DIEGO’S CHILDREN SMILE by BECCA BARR | photo provided by The Super Dentists

G

oing to the dentist can be a scary experience for children and, therefore, stressful for their parents. The Super Dentists, San Diego’s largest and most trusted pediatric dentistry and orthodontic office, hopes to make going to the dentist a positive experience for the whole family. For over 20 years, led by Dr. Nazli Keri (also known as the Tooth Keri) and Dr. Kami Hoss (also known as Dr. HaveOneSuperSmile), this team of exceptional pediatric dentists and orthodontists has fought cavities and crooked teeth. “By providing outof-this-world, kid-centered dental care,” said Dr. Hoss, “the Super Dentists are saving the world one smile at a time.” Their dedication to making dentistry enjoyable is evident in every aspect of their practice. “From the second you step into our theme park-designed offices, you’re someplace special with an accomplished, professional pediatric and orthodontic dental crew that cares about your kids,” shared Dr. Hoss. Their offices feature video games, TVs, movies, music, a toy store, dress-up area, selfie/photo-op area for the kids, and a newsstand and café serving Starbucks coffee for the parents. The Super Dentists focus on convenience, which is perfect for parents with hectic schedules. They have extended hours on weekdays and are open on weekends. They offer not only pediatric dentistry, but orthodontics, parent dentistry, and oral surgery

as well. They work with all insurances. “We never turn away any kid in need of dental care, regardless of their financial situation,” related Dr. Hoss. “We provide flexible and affordable financing.” And with several locations around San Diego County, including Carmel Valley, one is sure to be nearby. All of The Super Dentists are up-to-date on the latest innovations and advances in the field. “We are always on the forefront of new dental technologies,” said Dr. Hoss. “If there is a new device available for a quicker, more comfortable, and enhanced dental result, we have it.” The Super Dentists even have their own dental assisting school. They offer spa-like amenities, including flavored gloves, aromatherapy, warm towels, massage chairs, and virtual reality masks to keep their patients relaxed and pampered. Giving back to the community is another important principle to The Super Dentists, always with a focus on children. They host dental days, providing free dental treatment for kids up to 12 years old. Their annual Candy Buy-Back at Halloween lets kids save their teeth while sending their sweet treats to our troops. The Super Dentists also visit over 800 schools in San Diego to provide free school presentations about the importance of oral health. With a longtime and unending mission of serving San Diego’s children, The Super Dentists are truly a fixture in the local community. 

A SWEET

AFFAIR

Summer Fun Returns at the San Diego County Fair by LAINEY KRAL photos ©agezinder/123RF.COM

O

ne of San Diego's most beloved traditions has returned. The San Diego County Fair – whose theme this year is How Sweet It Is! – was first established in 1880 and arrived at its current home, the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in 1936. The fair has undergone a number of name changes over the past 138 years, and though the name was changed back to the original San Diego County Fair in 2002, many locals still know it as the Del Mar Fair. The fair offers a wide range of attractions and events, from famously adventurous fair food to dizzying carnival rides. Community members of all ages have the opportunity to showcase their talents as well, with competitions and exhibitions for collections, crafts, wine and beer, fine art, fashion, floral design, and of course, livestock of all shapes and sizes. Summer concerts are another popular draw, and this year includes a variety of artists from Little Big Town to Kansas and more. The fair will run June 1 through July 4, and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in June. Hours vary from day to day, so check times and find out about more special events at www.sdfair.com. 

BEAT THE HEAT!

PLAN FOR PARKING!

Check the weather ahead of time and dress in comfortable clothes for walking. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are a good idea for sunny days, and bring a water bottle if you're staying all day.

Onsite parking is available, as well as free offsite parking with shuttle service to the fair. Due to crowds and traffic, getting there can be hectic – be sure to leave with plenty of time to get to any special events you’re looking forward to.
