’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch out and Derrick Breaux my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. Publisher When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or repair, Dave’s your man. He can be reached at 619-913-0420. ven if you don’t recognize the name of the Fortin family matriarch, it's possible you've eaten some of the sumptuous cakes she sells. As the entrepreneur responsible for bringing the Nothing Bundt Cakes franchise to San Diego, Mara Fortin has happily settled into her Pacific Highlands Ranch East home along with husband Jason and her daughters Kendall, 13, and Karyn, 11. Of her love for Carmel Valley, Mara commented, “We enjoy the great schools and convenient and accessible shopping.” Jason agreed, stating, “We very rarely need to leave the community to get our household items.”

Mara Fortin and Jason Bell (Stepfather) Kendall Rae (13), Karyn Elizabeth (11) Pacific Highlands Ranch East; Casabella Mara – San Diego; Jason – Pittsburgh, PA Small business owners Link – Rottweiler/terrier mix; Nala – Chihuahua/ terrier mix; Katniss – cat Nothing Bundt Cakes

Originally from San Diego, Mara attended Mount Carmel High School in PQ. After earning her law degree from the University of Arizona, Mara toiled for eight years as an attorney in Las Vegas. She burned out and moved back to San Diego when her daughters were both under age two, and opened the very first franchise of Nothing Bundt Cakes. Now Mara oversees seven local Nothing Bundt Cakes locations – the most recent storefront to open is in the Pacific Highland Ranch shopping center. Mara met Jason about a year and a half ago while he was still living in Pittsburgh, PA. After long-distance dating, Jason moved to San Diego last summer, and now the blended family gets along famously. Jason keeps busy as an entrepreneur, spearheading a new food concept on the West Coast that is already thriving on the East Coast. When discussing her entrepreneurial brood, Mara admitted, “We are the ‘bundt cake’ family!” She continued, “We are also homebodies. We’re very low-key and low maintenance, and we like to watch shows and play board games together.” Jason added, “I play basketball and skateboard with the girls, and every Sunday afternoon I cook dinner for the family.” But rest assured, even with the family’s seemingly relaxed attitude, Jason revealed, “We are also very competitive with one another about pretty much anything!” Politically active, Mara sits on several small business boards and councils, and regularly travels to Washington, D.C. to advocate on behalf of small business owners. She proclaimed, “I love to create new jobs and watch people grow, especially young women.” Describing her own daughters as having unique, natural leadership and artistic abilities, Mara said, “Watch out for one or more members of this family to run for an elected office in the future – maybe even president!” 

W

hen Andrew Kuang decided to participate in the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair (GSDSEF), which took place in March of 2017 at the Balboa Park Activity Center, he truly put his heart into his project. A 12-yearold seventh grader at Carmel Valley Middle School, Andrew came up with a novel way to apply the scientific method in order to help solve the water contamination problem in Flint, MI. He said, “I really wanted to help people when I started my project.” This is what inspired him to try using cilantro as a heavy metal biosorbent (absorbent organic material). “I am inspired by the achievements others have made to help people, like the humanitarian workers in developing countries.”

The majority of Andrew’s free time this school year was devoted to developing and perfecting his ambitious science project. After his project’s success at the GSDSEF, Andrew qualified to enter the California State Science Fair, which was held in April at the California Science Center in downtown Los Angeles. Only 1,000 students, grades six through 12, throughout the state were selected to compete for over $50,000 in total awards and scholarships. Just being invited to attend and compete is considered a great honor in itself. Naturally, Andrew’s favorite subject in school is science. His appreciation for the field stems from all of the opportunities to change the world that come with it. He shared, “My science class allows me to learn more about the natural world.” Though he isn’t sure of what he wants to do when he grows up just yet, Andrew maintained, “As an adult, I want to help people. I haven't thought out the details yet, but helping people was the major motivation behind my science fair project!” Though he does have an amazing grasp of creating and executing remarkable scientific ideas, Andrew revealed that he does have issues when dealing with his hardware. He laughed, “I have a sufficient talent for taking pretty bad care of laptops. I've dropped them and spilled water over them!” Andrew shouldn’t worry though, because as inventive as he is, perhaps he'll one day conceive of a revolutionary scientific solution to remedy the fragility of laptops. For now, Andrew is content with focusing on making the most of his middle school career and life in Carmel Valley. 

hristopher Day and his family are relatively new San Diego residents, having just moved to Carmel Valley from Madison, WI in 2016. The eldest of Christopher's two sons became involved in Science Olympiad when he was in the sixth grade, inspiring the scientist in Christopher to get involved. “I am a biologist and love to share science with a lay audience,” he shared, “especially young students who are often in awe when they learn about the discoveries that have been made over the years.” Christopher is currently the head coach for the program, and has specifically volunteered with teams at Solana Pacific Elementary (Hovercraft, Microbe Mission), Carmel Valley Middle School (Bottle Rocket), and Torrey Pines High School (Hovercraft). In Wisconsin, Christopher learned how many extra hours teachers put in organizing and inspiring kids, and he knew extra support was crucial, especially when their time and resources are so limited. It was a natural progression to continue with Science Olympiad when the Days moved to 92130. “I love how the children are exposed to so many topics involving many different skill sets,” he confirmed. “The Science Olympiad organization has really created a gem of a program that operates in every state, so I feel my time is well spent helping them at all levels.” Born in Britain, Christopher came to the U.S. in 1992. His wife is from Shanghai. They met as scientists, working on both coasts and in the Midwest. “We are here to stay and love the diversity that is the U.S.,” he smiled. He has made several observations through his Science Olympiad experience: it’s common for students to come back to elementary and middle schools to help, which fosters a culture of volunteering at a young age, and this exposes girls to STEM early, helping them realize they can thrive and be the best at what they do. If Christopher could grant the students he works with one wish, it would be to give them the exhilaration of discovery. Science Olympiad is not about memorization; rather, critical thinking and problem solving. “My experience is that if we raise the bar high, and Science Olympiad really does this, then the next generation of scientists and engineers will be well prepared for what the future holds.” He feels his biggest accomplishment is generating a genuine curiosity in the students who are learning about the different sciences. “Success is when kids go home and are excited to share their science with anyone who will listen.” 

ORTHODONTICS PROFILE

LIVE LIFE I-ORTHODONTICS AND DR. LINDSAY PFEFFER CREATE SMILES FROM THE INSIDE OUT by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo provided by I-Ortho

I

-Orthodontics is a unique practice that focuses not just on a patient’s teeth but their overall experience from the moment they walk through the front door. “I-Orthodontics is not just a business. It is a place of impact and a place where we focus on changing lives beyond just changing patients’ smiles. We want our patients to live life smiling,” revealed Dr. Lindsay Pfeffer, who worked with Dr. Noel Moser until her retirement in 2014. Formerly Moser Orthodontics, Dr. Pfeffer re-branded the office into what I-Orthodontics is today, while continuing the legacy of being a philanthropic and family-centered practice. “Our practice focuses on giving back to our community and helping those in need. We sponsor over 100 community organizations in the area and maintain our Boards for Braces campaign,” noted Dr. Pfeffer. “This program is for those who may not need orthodontics but who want to help improve the life of someone less fortunate. For every California longboard that is purchased, I treat one child in need for free.” With this program, Dr. Pfeffer strives to help develop a culture of buying with intent. This allows young patients to feel a connection between something they desire and how it can impact another’s life. In addition to cultivating a welcoming and giving environment, the members of the I-Ortho staff – each having many years of experience in orthodontics – strive to be the best they can be in their field by regularly receiving training from world-renowned orthodontic specialists. Dr. 24 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2017

Pfeffer herself was a scientist before earning her Doctorate in Dental Medicine from an Ivy League institution. Her scientific background has fostered a love for the technical and innovative side of the industry. With this in mind, she and her team take a proactive approach to orthodontics. “Today, teeth can be improved with retainers, braces, and more invisible options like Invisalign or lingual braces. With advances in technology, we are able to fix teeth faster and improve the look of patients’ smiles at any age,” Dr. Pfeffer explained. “For growing children, we are able to avoid pulling teeth and prevent problems that otherwise may be unsolvable in adulthood.” Patient education is also a key part of Dr. Pfeffer’s practice. She is committed to informing her patients of all their options and making sure they understand all aspects of their treatment. “Our focus is on making our patients happy. We also want people to be inspired by our office so that they can make someone else’s day by continuing that feeling they have when they leave our office. Kindness is contagious, and we want to serve as role models for our community,” related Dr. Pfeffer, who splits her own time between running her practice and volunteering for over 20 different organizations. With its many philanthropic endeavors and programs – like their Little Free Library offered to children, parents, and all who visit the office – the impact of I-Ortho’s efforts is felt throughout the community. For more information about their programs and services, or to set up an appointment, call 858-756-6878. 

The I-Ortho team welcomes patients and community members to pay a visit to their official Little Free Library, where all are welcome to take a book and leave a book.

Super Speller

CARMEL VALLEY STUDENT WINS COUNTYWIDE SPELLING BEE

P

acific Trails Middle School eighth grader Yash Hande won the 48th Annual San Diego Union-Tribune Countywide Spelling Bee at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park in March. Yash qualified for the county spelling bee by first winning his classroom bee and then the school bee. In order to prepare, Yash said he studied words from different languages and from the online dictionary. He competed against 93 other seventh and eighth grade students in the four-hour countywide competition, and was finally crowned the champion after he correctly spelled the word “sphacelated” in the final round. He was presented a trophy by Rick Shea, president of the San Diego County Board of Education. Yash will move on to represent San Diego County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland at the end of May.

Yash has been participating in spelling bees since he was in first grade. His family has a history of being involved with spelling bees as well – his sister represented Carmel Valley Middle School in the county bee twice before. “It’s a great way to learn new words and meet new people,” Yash said. When he was crowned the winner of the county bee, he said, “It felt amazing. It made me really happy.” In his free time, Yash likes to play soccer, swim, and practice Tae Kwon Do. This year’s regional bee marked the debut of a new spelling bee master, Timothy Randall, a University of San Diego professor of practice in charge of student internships and career opportunities. He replaced David Hay, who hosted the event for 35 years. 

Nonprofits Partner to Help Children See

92130-based Vision of Children Foundation (VOC) has partnered with Illumina’s new iHope Program, a philanthropic initiative aimed at identifying the genetic causes of undiagnosed rare diseases in children. Under the partnership, Illumina will provide a limited number of free whole genome sequencing (WGS) tests to VOC’s Family Network, many of whom have sought out but could not afford genetic testing. These tests analyze the entire genome of a child as well as his or her parents and investigate if genetic alterations are involved in causing the child’s vision disorder. The results may not only provide a clear diagnosis for families who have been previously frustrated by inconclusive results and failed procedures, but could also be of critical use in future clinical trials to find cures for genetic vision disorders. VOC is a nonprofit organization that has been a driving force in funding groundbreaking research in its quest to find a cure for genetically caused eye disorders for children around the world. To request an application for WGS testing contact Nancy Montejano at nancy@visionofchildren.org. For further information visit www.visionofchildren.org.

Teacher Nominated for Prestigious Award

The San Diego County Fair’s Plant*Grow*Eat program teaches elementary school students about the connection between agriculture and nutrition. After planting their seeds, watering, weeding their plants, and watching their garden grow, even kindergartners now understand where their food comes from. After growing their plants, students are bussed to the fair to see how their entries fared during judging. Asked to reveal the secret of their first-place lettuce medley, 2016 winners Arturo and Emily confided, “Extra water. When our plants looked dry, we gave them a little more.” Last year, the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation, thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsored 73 buses (typically, $300 per bus) that enabled students from low-income schools to participate in Plant*Grow*Eat. Bus sponsors receive publicity, bus signage, and an opportunity to meet and accompany the sponsored students to the judging area. Sponsors can also serve as a judge. The Foundation is currently looking for additional sponsors for Plant*Grow*Eat in order to keep this program flourishing for future generations. 3rd Annual Susan G. Komen Symposium

Students from Ashley Falls Elementary School participated in a competition to create an appealing and space- and cost-effective garden to be built at the school this year. The students worked in groups of two to three and were given a budget of $2,000. They researched garden ideas, designed a map, calculated the total cost, and added their own creative touches to their design. Each class chose its top two or three best gardens, which were then presented to school staff at a meeting. The staff chose a winning garden and then further challenged the students to work together to come up with an even better garden using all the ideas that stood out in the presentations. The winning team was awarded the title “garden directors” and were the ones making all the final decisions for the newly formed garden group. There will be a community clean-out day and building day in the coming months to put the final plans into practice.

Susan G. Komen San Diego hosted its 3rd Annual Dinner Symposium, “Screens, Genes & The Choices We Make: A Conversation on Research, Treatment and Lifestyle,” at the San Diego Marriott Del Mar in March. Guests were treated to a unique farm-to-table menu and invited to discover the role of mindfulness in promoting and sustaining health and wellness. The event, moderated by former Good Morning America co-host, journalist, and breast cancer survivor Joan Lunden, brought together leading cancer experts to give insights on the latest breast cancer research, treatments, and scientific findings. The event also raised funds to support Komen San Diego’s Mobile Mammography Coach to provide mammograms to uninsured or underinsured individuals. Komen San Diego is the county’s largest funder of free breast cancer services and support, including diagnostic mammograms, life-saving screenings, temporary financial aid for living expenses, transportation, meal deliveries, education, and more. CCA’S CASAS DE LUZ CLUB HELPS NEEDY FAMILIES IN MEXICO

T

he Casas de Luz Club at Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) is helping families in Tijuana, Mexico by building homes and delivering donations. Each year the club works to achieve its goal of raising $4,500 and completing one home build, where all club members have the opportunity to go to Mexico together and build a home for a family in need. Home builds are two days long, with club members arriving on Saturday, staying overnight at a local orphanage, and returning on Sunday. CCA’s Casas de Luz Club, which consists of approximately 30 members, often works with neighboring schools such as Torrey Pines High School, San Dieguito Academy, and Westview High School to host fundraisers or events in Mexico. All of these high school clubs are associated with the larger Casas de Luz nonprofit organization.

CCA’s Casas de Luz Club President Mariella Gauvreau, who also works as an intern for the Casas de Luz organization, first became involved with the club as a way of practicing her Spanish and learning more about the Mexican culture. “My favorite thing about working with the club is meeting students from different grades or different parts of campus that I wouldn’t have met otherwise,” Mariella said. “We all come together because we have similar passions and goals. We love Spanish and love helping others. It’s amazing to see how much we can get done when we work together!” The club is always accepting donations of things like couches, lamps, windows, doors, and other household items to take to Mexico. For more information about Casas de Luz go to www.casasdeluz.org. To learn more about the club at CCA email ccacasasdeluz@gmail.com. 

ANTI-AGING DENTAL CARE Dr. Roya Mirkhan and Her Team Prioritize Individualized Patient Care at Advanced Dentistry and Implants at Scripps Del Mar in Carmel Valley by LIZ ONUFER | photo provided by Advanced Dental Implants

D

r. Roya Mirkhan has developed a solid reputation, earning the title of one of “America’s Top Dentists” by the Consumer Research Council of America for the past nine consecutive years. Alongside this well-deserved award, she has also been named one of San Diego’s Top Doctors and Dentists for years of exceptional work and success. Advanced Dentistry and Implants specializes in anti-aging dental treatment devoted to restoring and enhancing the natural beauty of your smile by using conservative, state of the art procedures that will result in beautiful, healthy, and long-lasting smiles. “Every smile we create is designed to enhance not just the mouth but the overall appearance of our patients,” explained Dr. Mirkhan. Restoring lost and missing teeth is another specialty area of the team. The all-in-one same day dental implant procedure, to replace one or more more missing teeth, takes place in a single appointment in one office, eliminating the need to go to multiple offices and through multiple phases of treatment. This is a great option that restores function and chewing ability while looking and feeling natural. The whitening and maintenance programs at Advanced Dentistry and Implants also help their patients maintain a youthful appearance. Dr. Mirkhan acknowledged, “It is so rewarding to see someone going from hiding their smile

to someone who has natural-looking teeth and shows their smile and can be happy.” Dr. Mirkhan’s commitment to her patients’ health and well-being is evident in her philosophy. “We cater to each patient based on their specific needs with attention to detail, creating natural smiles,” she stated. Even patients who have been told by other dentists that no solution was possible have found answers at Advanced Dentistry and Implants. From same day dental implants and full mouth rehabilitation to Invisalign clear braces for adults, Dr. Mirhkan and her team combine personalized care with experience and expertise. Dr. Mirkhan has served thousands of patients since 1998, when she established her private practice in San Diego. The central location at Scripps Medical Offices in Del Mar/ Carmel Valley, the long-term relationships, and the commitment to the highest standards in health and well-being of the patients has earned Advanced Dentistry and Implants top awards, and even more importantly, recognition from their patients. The testimonials on their website, www.lovemyteeth.com, offer the evidence from first-hand experiences at Advanced Dentistry and Implants. As one long-time patient Patrick D. acknowledged, “Her attention to detail, the thoroughness of the examination, coupled with

FIRED UP! Motivational Speaker and Author Snowden McFall Is Happy to Call Carmel Valley Her New Home by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

T

hough a newcomer to the 92130 community, Snowden McFall and her husband Spencer Whiting are thoroughly enjoying their new life in Carmel Valley. Snowden, a motivational speaker and author of six self-help books, recently relocated from Florida. “We live in a great neighborhood that is welcoming and friendly. I love that everyone seems to be committed to living a healthy lifestyle,” stated Snowden, who enjoys watching the sun set over the Pacific and spending time outdoors. As a professional speaker and corporate trainer, Snowden motivates and inspires people both professionally and personally. She has been in the industry for 25 years and presents custom keynote speeches and training. “I fire up and engage the workforce, reduce stress, and improve performance. I love helping companies be more successful with their employees and customers,” revealed Snowden. Writing is a large part of Snowden’s life and is an endeavor that she has pursued since she was a child. “I started journaling, then writing for the school newspaper, etc. As an entrepreneur, I began writing after teaching a weekend seminar called ‘Making a Difference in the World,’ where people worked on a dream or major goal,” she shared. “Attendants left the program with a full action plan and a variety of tools to be successful. That program became my first book, Fired Up! How to Succeed by Making Your Dreams Come True.” According to Snowden, all of her books are applicable to both business and personal situations. Snowden is inspired by those that attend her seminars, and she enjoys getting to know audience members before her programs. “Everyone has challenges and hardships but people are courageous and creative about how they handle them. Their stories are so extraordinary, and they touch me,” she revealed. When she lived in Florida, Snowden was actively involved in community service projects, with a focus on groups that helped empower women. She was named as a National Women in Business Advocate by the Small Business Administration for her nonprofit work with female entrepreneurs. Snowden is now looking to serve the Carmel Valley community in a similar capacity. She concluded, “I’m still getting to know the area and have been doing a great deal of networking with various groups, trying to meet people and come across organizations where I can add value and make a difference.” 

Wisdom Tooth Surgery Is

Necessary? by Tarkan Sidal, DDS, MD

S

urgical management of impacted third molars (wisdom teeth) is a common treatment frequently offered in oral and maxillofacial surgery offices. Despite how common the treatment is, removing wisdom teeth is not without controversy – some critics would argue that in the absence of disease or symptoms, patients would be subjected to pain, risk, and unfavorable economic outcome. However, strong peer reviewed research shows that retained wisdom teeth may involve periodontal pathology (gum disease) despite patients showing no symptoms. The negative impact of periodontal pathology may not be limited to the wisdom teeth region, but rather can have systemic (bodily) affects.

Patients with no symptoms also may have carious wisdom teeth, eventually decaying the tooth next to it. Wisdom teeth should be considered for removal when there is clinical and radiographic evidence of acute or chronic periodontitis (gum disease), pericoronitis (infection and inflammation of excess tissue over the impacted tooth), negative impact on adjacent teeth or not enough space in the jaw forcing the teeth to erupt improperly and grow in sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. In most patients, some variation of these findings are present, making the person a candidate for wisdom teeth removal. In addition, wisdom teeth that are in the area of future jaw surgery or are interfering with orthodontic care also should be removed. All in all, the decision of wisdom teeth removal comes to life in most cases with two doctors bringing their expertise to the table,

a general dentist and an oral surgeon. In an orthodontic care scenario, a general dentist, orthodontist, and oral surgeon may work in concert to make a recommendation in the patient’s best interest. Poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems. When they are partially erupted or have a communication with the oral cavity, the gum opening around the teeth can allow food and bacteria to enter an uncleansible space around the tooth. This condition will eventually cause an infection and/or cavities and gum disease. The result: swelling, discomfort, pain, and illness. The impingement from the incorrectly erupting wisdom teeth may damage other teeth and disrupt the natural alignment of teeth. The most serious problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom teeth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth. Removal of offending impacted teeth might prevent possible future problems of this nature. 

Inventory at a Record Low – Why It’s Not A Bubble by SCOTT VOAK

M

arch opened with fewer homes for sale in San Diego than we had in March of 2004, which was the low point in inventory for the bubble. As inventory continues to fall, competition is heating up among buyers and prices are finally starting to move up. Last August, Keller Williams co-founder Gary Williams and some of his top local agents warned of a shift in the market and a cooling off. I disagreed for a number of reasons. Now that the market is continuing to accelerate, I am starting to hear people talk about a bubble. Once again, I’m going to disagree. We may cool off later this year, but it won’t be anything like a bubble. When a bubble bursts, prices collapse. Outside of a major world event, that will only happen with a dramatic simultaneous increase in supply and reduction in demand. While we could easily see a reduction in demand as prices push affordability out of reach, I believe any reduction in demand would be temporary and would reverse with a small correction in prices. I think a continuing shortage in supply is what will prevent a bubble from forming. With the amount of equity people have and the favorable interest rates people have locked in, I don’t see panic selling on our horizon. But what about the ability to move up? Unfortunately for many, I am seeing that opportunity constrained by the current market. As prices and interest rates

Address

have risen, homeowners are finding themselves with increased equity, but without the ability to qualify for a larger loan. So, someone who put $100K down on a $500K house and finds the house worth $650K now has $250K in equity. But as rates have gone from the low 3% range to the low 4% range, they can’t qualify for a larger loan than they now have, and so they are stuck in their current home. This is the main reason we are seeing lower inventory today and the reason inventory will stay tight and prices will hold firm throughout this economic cycle. 

AN AFTERNOON

BY THE SEA

Discover Seaport Village + The Headquarters This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

I

f your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a lazy stroll along cobblestone pathways winding in and out of view of the Big Bay, ice cream cone in hand, while drenched in the warm Southern California sunshine, there’s a good chance we know where your head is at: Seaport Village. This 14-acre waterfront stretch is home to over 45 diverse shops, 17 eateries, and regular entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, free outdoor concerts on Sundays, and an old-fashioned carousel – open 365 days a year. Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village! 

Most of the good jobs in the future will have something to do with computers. Some people choose to learn computer science at college. Others, like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, started early with coding to hone their problem-solving skills. InGenius promotes and supports computing education for K-12 students. COMPUTATIONAL THINKING WITHOUT CODING: Students can learn about algorithms and computational problem-solving without writing one line of coding. They can learn through engaging games and puzzles that use cards, boards, string, crayons and lots of walking and running around. There are many resources and competitions for computational thinking. We highly recommend Bebras Challenge (http://www.bebras.org/).

LEARNING TO CODE: For those students who want to solve problems with coding, they can option to learn programming. For young beginners, we recommend graphical block-based languages. Scratch and Alice 3 are among the most popular novice programming environments. Students learn programmatic constructs and focus on problems logic without losing sleep over syntax. When students are ready for the next step, they can choose a text-based language. Some of the most popular languages include Java, C++, and Python. These languages are more similar to each other than they are different. With any of these languages, students can learn important programming concepts such as object oriented programming, conditionals, loops and arrays. COMPETITIVE PROGRAMMING AND ALGORITHMS: For those aspiring students who want to learn beyond just programming and start their journey with algorithm and solving complex problems, preparing and participating in programming contests can be very helpful. USA Computing Olympiad (http://www.usaco.org/) is among the most reputable ones. Their contests are algorithmic in nature and require clever algorithms and/or data structures to solve problems with time constraints.
