It’s Not Just a Jeep!

’ve always loved the idea of buying an old Jeep and refurbishing it. Once, I even convinced my wife to ride with me to check out a few. After seeing them, she eventually talked some sense into me and made me realize a project of that caliber was not in our family’s best interest. Fast forward many years. Apparently, my son – soon to be getting his driver’s permit – inherited the Jeep bug. There’s no doubt that he would have preferred a brandnew Jeep, but once I let him know what new Jeeps cost, he quickly changed his mind. So, we developed a plan. We would find a used Jeep that we could refurbish together as a father-son project. The search became a near obsession. On a daily basis, my son would slide his phone in front of my face asking what about this one? For a variety of reasons, my answer was always the same – not that one. Then, about a year ago, he showed me a Jeep. It wasn’t pretty. At 29 years old, it had clearly lived a long and “fun” life. It had scrapes, dents, some rust, and a very rough interior. But it had something that caught our attention – a brand new engine and new tires! As a family, we drove down to take a look at it. I strategically requested that my wife test drive it, with our son in the passenger seat. That’s all it took! We became the proud owners of a 1989 Jeep Wrangler. My son and I slowly and meticulously began to refurbish it. We did as close to a frame-off restoration as our budget allowed. We spent many days and nights working on the Jeep. Our goal was to have every part of the Jeep that you can see look as it did when it was driven off the factory floor 30 years ago. Along the journey, my son and I spent a lot of quality time together. We laughed. We got our hands dirty. We banged up our knuckles, figured out ways to remove and replace parts that didn’t want to be removed, and definitely shared moments of frustration. And yes, there was lots of physical exhaustion and sweat! There’s no longer a tool in my toolbox that I wouldn’t trust my son to use. This project allowed my son and me to bond beyond the normal busy lives that we all know. We took turns listening to each other’s music playlist. We talked about things that would typically require a “scheduled” conversation. We worked together on a common goal, without immediate gratification. I am so thankful for the opportunity this Jeep gave us. While the obvious outcome is a 1989 Jeep Wrangler that looks better today than it did 30 years ago, it’s not just a Jeep. It’s memories. It’s pride. It’s driving something down the road that you worked on with your own hands. We will remember and talk about this project for the rest of our lives. ho knew that sibling rivalry could result in such a success story? Back when she was just a little girl, Zoë Salinas felt a strong pang of jealously when her older brother, Kai, placed ninth in the world for golfing. Wanting to prove that she could also master the sport, Zoë managed to not only win the California State Championship twice, at ages five and seven, but she also became a runner-up at the IMG World Championship at age six, and eventually won the FCG Callaway World Championship at age eight! Now that she is a 10-year-old fifth grader

at Sycamore Ridge Elementary, Zoë laughed about Kai being the impetus for her golf glory. She admitted, “My brother basically inspired me to play golf because I’ve always wanted to be better than him!” Zoë claimed that she first began playing golf “ever since I could walk,” and became entrenched in golf tournaments by age four. Zoë’s long-term goal is to hopefully attend Stanford University and play on the college golf team. Discussing the appeal of her favorite activity, Zoë proclaimed, “In golf, it doesn’t matter if you are bigger or smaller than someone else, because everyone has an equal chance to compete.” Zoë also learned a valuable mental skill while competing on the green. She revealed, “The most challenging part of golf is staying focused after you hit a bad shot. You just have to let go of the past and focus on the shot in front of you.” Utilizing her newfound self-control has

also resulted in Zoë making strides in her school’s math club. Zoë stated, “My favorite subject is math, probably because my dad is a computer scientist and he taught me the basics at an early age. My mom and dad actually met in a calculus class at Columbia University, so I feel a family connection with math!” When she isn’t working on golf or math, Zoë can be found participating in tennis tournaments, playing the piano, doodling, and enjoying the monkey bars at her school. Zoë also continues to practice her proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, which her father taught her and her brother to speak, read, and write. Zoë has proven that she is able to swing her way to a fantastic future. 

35th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day

2019 BGCSD Youth of the Year

I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) hosted its 35th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day at 107 sites throughout San Diego County, including Carmel Valley Recreation Center and Torrey Pines State Beach. More than 6,500 volunteers cleared nearly 145,000 pounds of waste and debris from streets, canyons, parks, and the coastline, as well as completing restoration projects such as painting, graffiti removal, non-native vegetation removal, mulching, trail restoration, and weeding. For the 35th year in a row, plastic remains the chief polluter collected throughout the county, and cigarette butts remain the most littered individual item. Some notable odd items collected included a reclining chair, refrigerator, wheelchair, plastic Christmas tree, messages in a bottle, rice cooker, restaurant pager, and a guitar case. Coastal Cleanup Day is one of two annual countywide cleanups hosted by ILACSD; the Creek to Bay cleanup will be held on April 25, 2020. Learn more about how to get involved at www.ilacsd.org.

Cole Snider was named the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito (BGCSD) 2019 Youth of the Year at the Youth of the Year Celebration held at the Del Mar Racetrack in August. The award acknowledges the leadership, community service, and academic and healthy lifestyle achievements of teens ages 14 through 18. Cole has volunteered over 100 hours at the Griset Clubhouse in Encinitas, beautifying the community garden by planting, cleaning, and painting. He has also coached a sixth grade basketball team through the Elementary Hoops program and, with his brother, created basketball skills clinics that are offered free to club kids. Cole will receive a $1,000 educational scholarship sponsored by the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Foundation. DMUSD Partners with The Super Dentists Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD) has teamed up with The Super Dentists to teach families about a California law requiring children entering kindergarten to receive a dental screening before they start school. “Cavities indicate a bacterial imbalance, which can be a sign of serious health issues,” said Dr. Kami Hoss, Co-founder and CEO of The Super Dentists. “Poor oral health can impact a child’s oral and facial growth and development, confidence and psychological health, and long-term physical health and even longevity.” DMUSD welcomes 750 to 1,000 new families each year, many of which are new to California and the dental screening law. The Super Dentists hope to educate local families about the importance of good oral health and help them comply with the law. “The Super Dentists is only the sixth corporate entity the district has chosen to officially partner with, because of their longtime commitment to San Diego,” said DMUSD Assistant Superintendent Jason Romero. Danny Jackson was recently recognized as the 77th Assembly District’s 2019 Veteran of the Year. Danny honorably served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division from 1969 to 1970 during the Vietnam War, followed by a 37-year career in the postal service. Now retired in San Diego, Danny continues to serve his community through the Veterans of Foreign Wars Poway Post 7907. He has worked to reduce homelessness and suicide rates among veterans, increase employment opportunities for exiting active duty military, support deported veterans and military families, and foster civic engagement in the electoral process. “Danny Jackson courageously served our nation and is a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “I am truly grateful for his patriotic dedication to our country and its people.” Danny lives in Rancho Peñasquitos with his wife Eva. They have six children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

n a nontraditional turn of events, Dr. Sinan Alhamdi left a thriving dental practice in Boston, MA, so his wife could pursue her dream job utilizing a Ph.D. in bio-medical engineering in San Diego. He took over Del Mar Dental Arts from former owner Dr. Ramin Ghassemi. “I carefully evaluated numerous candidates and was fortunate to have found Dr. Alhamdi,” Dr. Ghassemi said, “who I believe possesses the highest qualifications and is extremely well-skilled to take over my practice.” Dr. Alhamdi graduated from Boston University Dental School and was a senior faculty member at Drake College, New Jersey, Department of Dentistry. CARMEL VALLEY GIRL SCOUT EARNS GOLD AWARD

atherine Stone of Carmel Valley has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the organization’s highest honor awarded to Girls Scouts for demonstrating extraordinary leadership by creating sustainable solutions that address society’s greatest challenges. For her Gold Award project, Catherine led an after-school workshop for girls in kindergarten through third grade focused on the civil, electrical, and aerospace fields.

“Our 2019 honorees embody everything this achievement stands for.” Catherine’s activities included teaching participants to design, test, and build structurally sound “bridges,” parallel and series circuits, and model planes. She also increased awareness

of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) career opportunities for girls through publicity and social media efforts. Catherine joined Girl Scouts in kindergarten as a member of Troop 1045. The Canyon Crest Academy alum is now studying mechanical engineering at University of California, Riverside. Catherine was among 61 Gold Award winners honored during a recent ceremony at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. “Gold Award Girl Scouts change the world for the better, and change it for good!” said Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol M. LOS PEÑASQUITOS CANYON PRESERVE

COAST TO CREST TRAIL

With relatively flat trail routes, a hike through the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is great for all ages and skill levels. You’re sure to see much of the canyon’s wide variety of flora and fauna, as well as creeks, streams, and a waterfall cascading through volcanic rock. www.penasquitos.org

With about 48 miles of the planned 71 total miles completed, this trail extends from the ocean in Del Mar to the Volcan Mountain near Julian and contains eight sections with many smaller trails of varying intensity. www.sdrp.org

TORREY PINES STATE NATURAL RESERVE The main reserve area has six different trails hugging the coastline with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and acres of rare Torrey pine trees, making Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve a must on a sunny day. www.torreypine.org

DOUBLE PEAK Starting at Discovery Lake Park in San Marcos, this moderate five-mile loop trail offers panoramic views of North County at the summit. Much of the brush along the trail was burned by fires, so there is little shade on this route. www.san-marcos.net

BLACK MOUNTAIN While Black Mountain Open Space Park contains many chaparral and sage-lined hiking trails, Black Mountain itself is only accessible by two trailheads. It’s a moderate hike to the summit, which provides 360-degree views of the surrounding area, even out to the ocean on clear days. www.sandiego.gov

IRON MOUNTAIN This popular six-mile round trip hike is moderately difficult, with a clearly marked trailhead and boulder-lined trail leading to expansive views at the summit. www.poway.org
